Acidic drainage has long been recognised as the largest environmental liability facing the mining industry, and to a lesser extent, the public, through abandoned mines. The Canadian Mine Environment Neutral Drainage (MEND) initiative was the first international multi-stakeholder program to develop scientifically based technologies to reduce the effect of acidic drainage. The original MEND Program extended over a nine-year time frame ending in 1997, with technology transfer activities continuing to the end of year 2000 under the MEND 2000 program. Both programs have contributed enormously to the understanding of acidic drainage and how to prevent it. MEND3, launched in 2001, intends to further this effort with a strong, research-driven program. The successes of the MEND initiative have come through the collaborative efforts of the partners, the sharing of experiences, the thorough evaluation of technologies and their incremental improvements. As a result, the knowledge base on acidic drainage has grown considerably. An international model of alliance between the various worldwide initiative involved in acidic drainage is being formalised at this conference. This global alliance will enhance technology transfer capabilities and will lead to improved environmental performance for the industry. It is through collaboration that we have achieved the most progress in environmental performance, and this formal relationship will further expand these benefits.

Ore-bearing intrusions in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) were examined from nine mines: Boshekul, Nurkazgan, Kounrad, Borly, Aktogai, Koksai, Baogutu, Tuwu and Erdenet. The intrusions are diorite, granodiorite and tonalite with SiO2 contents ranging from 58 to 75 wt per cent, and show mildly fractionated rare earth elements (REE) ([LREE]N/[HREE]N = 2.7–4.7) – light REE and heavy REE – and varying Eu anomalies ([Eu]/[Eu]* = 0.58–1.4). The ratios of Sr/Y vary from 7.9 to 115 and the contents of Y from 4.6 to 23.9 ppm. The parental magmas of the intrusions are intrinsically oxidised. Zircon grains in the ore-bearing rocks from large- and intermediate-sized porphyry Cu deposits show high Ce4+/Ce3+ ratios characterised by 65–422 at Boshekul (>4.1 Mt Cu), 76–480 at Kounrad (>4.8 Mt Cu), 90–280 at Aktogai (>12 Mt Cu), 80–250 at Erdenet (>11 Mt Cu) 74–370 at Nurkazgan (>3.9 Mt Cu), 100–210 at Koksai (>1.6 Mt Cu), and 71–340 at Tuwu (~2.0 Mt Cu). In two small deposits, the ore-bearing rocks display low values of Ce4+/Ce3+; Borly (0.6 Mt Cu) ranging from 28 to 158, and Baogutu (0.6 Mt Cu) from 29 to 113. The Ce4+/Ce3+ ratio of 120 distinguishes large intermediate-size deposits from small-size deposits. Mine operation strategies are commonly optimised with a net present value (NPV) maximisation objective. There are well known properties of a typical mining project optimised for NPV, including high production rates and declining cut-off grade schedules. In practice, however, frequently there are operations that diverge from such NPV-maximising properties. Although a range of reasons for this can be at play, one possible explanation is that operators intuitively adjust their strategies to compensate for the flaws inherent to NPV maximisation. In particular, NPV analysis does not reflect the benefits of managerial flexibility inherent in a mining plan. Real options valuation (ROV) is an alternative approach that addresses this issue. We compare the properties of NPV and ROV optimisation solutions generated for the same scenario. Our simple case study demonstrates that the presence of real operating options in the optimisation model not only entails increased project value as expected, but also tends to encourage lower processing capacity (with lower associated capital cost), higher cut-off grades and greater use of stockpiles.CITATION:Elkington, T and Gould, J, 2012. It is generally recognised that slags are active participants in pyrometallurgical processes, and not merely inert liquids which must be produced. to effect separation of gangue material in smelting, or of impurities in refining. The importance attached to slag-metal reactions in steelmaking is shown by the numerous investigations in this field. However, there are still many important reactions of slags which require explanation. In this paper some new aspects of the reactions of slags will be discussed, as far as possible quantitatively.FREE AND COMBINED OXIDESMetallurgical experience indicates that variations in the composition of slags produce changes in the chemical behaviour of the various components. The engineering geological mapping of Metropolitan Area of Jopo Pessoa in the littoral zone of the Parafba State, northeast of Brazil, made possible the ambient characterisation for space using and its implications on the environmental resources. This region comes lately denoting an accented industrial growth and this work would help future projects of urban planning, distinguished by quick ground occupations for residential, industrial installations, farming, beyond mineral extractions. The mineral sector supplies material and substance demanded by industry and civil constructions, like as clay deposits, sands, calcareous rocks and mineral water. Many companies working there do not have the permission or inspection of ambient agencies for planned extractions of mineral resources. The consequences of this activity pass for the low profit of the reserves, bad uses of the sources, ground degradation, vegetation suppressions and physical impacts on landscapes, beyond noises and vibrations. These activities have causing accelerated alterations and transformations in the environment, compromising the sustainable development. It thus becomes clear that urgent solutions must be find to solve the problems with human interferences by closer inspection and management for disciplined use of its natural resources.

Australia's iron ore industry is entering a challenging period with the development of new orebodies, the introduction of new products and the push for further downstream processing. In addition, the recent price reductions for iron ore exports have intensified the focus on reducing capital and operating costs. To assist in these areas, CSIRO is expanding its research capabilities, including the incorporation into CSIRO of the Mineral Processing Laboratories in Perth, which were previously managed by the WA Department of Minerals and Energy. In addition, a large part of the $24.4 million expansion of CSIRO's Pinjarra Hills laboratories in Brisbane will be devoted to enhancing iron ore processing research, providing purpose built laboratories and large process bays.

The characteristics of 'Z' (Back-over run) and 'R' (Reverse) ventilation systems are dis- cussed in relation to their suitability for longwall mining. Experience in European mines has been described as a basis for comparison with Australian conditions. In assessing the merits of each ventilat- ion system, such factors as longwall layout (pillar design, number of headings and gateroad stability), the need for gas drainage and bleed- er systems, as well as the influence of seam dip have been considered relevant. The R system is generally applicable for single and two heading development in seams where gas emission is a less serious problem. In contrast, the lower extraction to development ratio of the Z system (which arises from using three or more heading layouts) is considered more favourable where high gas emission occurs. The Z system provides greater flexibility with respect to the provision of refreshing air at the tailgate end, access of men and materials, installation and retrieval of gas drainage systems and the ability to interchange main- gate and tailgate roadways in cases where roof strata loads are difficult to control, or where cpam in hac an influrnra

At present the source of virgin iron for steel produced in New Zealand is titanomagnetite extracted from titaniferous beachsands. Some of these beachsand deposits contain extractable quantities of ilmenite as well as titanomagnetite and both minerals represent challenging sources of vanadium and titanium products in addition to iron. This study looks at some theoretical aspects of smelting these ores directly with coal rather than with electric power, and takes into consideration the properties of the raw materials, the thermodynamics of possible process routes and the background of the economics involved.

THE Mount Morgan mine has, from the time of its historical discovery, been the subject of investigation and speculation by geologists and mining engineers. The first examination was made by Dr. R. L. Jack, in 1884. He came to the conclusion, from theevidence then available, that nothing but a thermal spring in the open air-otherwise a geyser-could account for the formation of the ore body. This report attracted world-wide attention at the time. Since then the mine has been examined by most of the leading geologists of Australia, and by many from elsewhere. In all cases the examination has only extended over a period' of a few days or weeks, and in the light of present knowledge of the deposit we know that sufficient data could not be obtained in such a short time to warrant the statement of definite conclusions. It is not to be wondered at, therefore, that a considerable difference of opinion exists as to the genesis of the deposit. That the company considered more detailed investigation necessary is shown by the fact that some thirteen years ago it employed Mr. Charles Walker as geological surveyor on the .mine. At that time also the data available was insufficient to give satisfactory results. It is, however, a matter for comment that none of the geological reports on the property took notice of the increase of copper values in the ore with depth, though the present workings and diamond-drilling...

Reaction products between high-temperature hydrothermal solution/uppermost mantle peridotite or lowermost crustal gabbro have been reported along Wadi Fizh of the northern Oman ophiolite; they are named as ‘mantle diopsidite’ and ‘crustal diopsidite’ respectively (Figure 1).The mantle diopsidite contains Cr-rich minerals like chromite, Cr-rich diopside (<2.5 wt per cent Cr2O3) and Cr-bearing grossular (<7.0 wt per cent Cr2O3). The chromites are varied in shape in the mantle diopsidite, euhedral to anhedral chromite grains contain globular inclusions of grossular and chlorite, and film-like chromite veinlets branch off from partially dissolved coarse chromite grains. In the crustal diopsidite, fine chromite grains are included in oscillatory-zoned skeletal uvarovite, especially in its high-Cr zones. The uvarovites are rich in rare earth elements (REEs). Direct laser ablation – inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometer (LA-ICP-MS) analysis of the primary fluid inclusions detected Na, but not K.Our detailed studies of Wadi Fizh diopsidites clarify that the high-temperature hydrothermal solution dissolves chromite grains at the uppermost mantle section and precipitates hydrothermal chromite at the lowermost crust section. In addition, REEs were mobilised in the hydrothermal solution together with Cr. The hydrothermal solution involved in the diopsidite formation is assumed to have been rich in NaCl, and could mobilise appreciable amounts of Cr and REE.CITATION:Akizawa, N, Arai, S and Tamura, A, 2015. Australia is now the world's second largest exporter and coal is now the nation's largest single export earner.Despite this very significant growth, Australia's competitive position is in jeopardy.

A method for the determination of microgram quantities of uranium in leachates from low grade uranium ores is described. Solubilized manium is purified by transfer to an organic solvent by a selective solvent extractionprocedure using tributyl phosphate, iso-octane, and aluminium nitrate. The organic phase is mixed with scintillation fiuors in toluene and the radioactive decay determined in a liquid scintillation counter. The method is sensitive and reproducible in the range 3-30 µg uranium.

Since its invention by Professor Klaus Schonert of the University of Clausthal, Germany, high pressure rolls comminution has attained near total acceptance as the preferred method of size reduction in the cement industry. Over 300 units have been manufactured worldwide. At locations where the system has been installed, considerable energy savings have been realised. These energy savings are generally in the range of 20 to 30 per cent compared to conventional ball mill circuits. However up to 50 per cent power saving has been achieved at some installations. This technology, with the exception of the diamond industry, has up to now had only limited success in ore processing. This has mainly been attributable to the abrasiveness of ores encountered in this industry leading to high wear rates. These high wear rates have given rise to an unacceptably short life time of the wear surface of the rolls, requiring regular replacement. A new wear surface has been developed which has shown to give a ten-fold increase in service life over conventional surfaces. This, together with developments made in machine design now give the units the ability to attain the high availabilities demanded by the mining industry, and therefore to allow this industry to achieve the considerable operating cost savings offered by the high pressure rolls.

IndiaÆs iron ore mining industry is growing rapidly in order to augment the capacity to meet the unprecedented demand for the iron ore. Traditionally, much of Indian iron ore production came from exploitation of high-grade haematite ores, with the exception of Kudremukh which beneficiates lean grade Banded Magnetite Quartz ore. Now with the changed scenario of demand and supply, keeping long term sustainability in mind, it is imperative to develop suitable processing technology for exploitation of banded haematite quartz (BHQ) ore available abundantly and not utilised so far. In this direction detailed characterisation and beneficiation studies were conducted with BHQ iron ore from the Bellary-Hospet region of India, assaying 36.5 per cent Fe. The mineralogical studies with the image analyser system revealed the presence of maghemite and haematite as iron-bearing minerals. The gangue mineral associations were siliceous, ferro-magnesian and carbonate minerals. Higher degrees of liberation were observed in the size range of 75 - 212 microns. Liberation grind tests were performed by grinding the ore to different top sizes in a closed circuit laboratory ball mill with the ground samples subjected to Davis tube tests. The yield, grade and recovery were used as parameters to plan a two-stage wet drum magnetic separation based on grinding the primary magnetic concentrate. After subjecting the final magnetic concentrate to flotation to remove residual silica a concentrate assaying more than 68 per cent was obtained. The non-magnetic product from the primary magnetic separation was deslimed, ground, blended with secondary magnetic tails and was subjected to a two pass wet high intensity magnetic separation (WHIMS). The WHIMS concentrate was further subjected to two-stage flotation to remove residual silica to obtain concentrates assaying 64 - 66 per cent Fe. The final combined concentrate from wet drum magnet and WHIMS after flotation could yield a blast furnace (BF) grade pellet feed concentrate assaying more than 65 per cent Fe with a yield about 39 per cent and iron recovery about 70 per cent. A direct reduction (DR) grade pellet feed concentrate assaying 67 per cent Fe with a yield of about 28 - 31 per cent and iron recovery about 53 - 57 per cent could also be produced. Based on the test work, a process flow sheet was developed to beneficiate the BHQ ore for production of BF/DR grade pellet feed concentrate. In this paper methodology adopted for selection of individual process, various diagnostic tests performed to rule out other beneficiation processes and the final process flow sheet development is presented and discussed in detail.

The Morning Star mine is one of numerous historically mined gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield of southwest Fiordland. The mine is hosted in Early Ordovician metasedimentary rocks that are composed predominantly of psammitic and pelitic lithologies. These rocks still contain their primary depositional features and are characterised by upper greenschist facies metamorphic grade.   The Morning Star mine lies on the eastern limb of a gently south plunging anticline. A bedding parallel fault-vein and an associated network of minor quartz veins hosts mineralisation. The main fault-vein structure strikes N-NW, dips steeply (~60¦) W, has a strike length of ~350 m, a vertical extent of ~170 m and is up to 2 m in thickness. The internal structure of the fault-vein consists of laminated quartz, massive and fibrous quartz, and silicified breccias/cataclasites. Gold is typically coarse grained (~1 - 2 mm) and associated with pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, tetrahedrite and galena. The geometry of the Morning Star mine is similar in form to that of a saddle reef. Gold-quartz lodes in the Preservation Inlet goldfield are comparable in geometry and host rock to their offset equivalents in the Golden Blocks field of NW Nelson.

The Greymouth Coal field is situated on the West Coast of New Zealand's South Island and has been mined for coal for more than 120 years. The area covered in this paper is within the Rapahoe Sector of this field and contains >200 million tonnes of low ash, low sulphur, bituminous rank coal. Paper No 6, presented to the 19th Annual Conference of the New Zealand Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Christchurch in August 1985 by R G Bowman, explained 'A Geologist's View' of the 'Economic Potential of the Greymouth Coalfield', and describes previous geological assessments of the Rapahoe Sector.

The title of this paper implies, and the text explicity states, that Sen and Spottiswood (1984) have found a new mineral species related to geocronite and jorganite. I believe that there is inadequate justification for this claim.The X-ray powder diffraction pattern reported by the authors exhibits a close similarity to that of geocronite, as stated by the authors, which suggests a close structural relationship at the very least. It is therefore reasonable to recalculate the results of the microprobe analysis reported by them to atomic proportions on the basis of the geocronite formula. This calculation, whether based on the formula used by Sen and Spottiswood (1984), or on one derived from a crystal-structure analysis (Birnie and Burnham, 1976), namely Pb18 (Sb, AS)11S46, with a total of 86 atoms, gives the results shown in Table 1.

A new leaching regime was implemented at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MinesÆ (KCGM) Gidji plant on a cyanide leach of ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate. High lime concentration and lead nitrate were used to overcome the refractoriness of the fine sulfides (high reactivity of fine sulfides with the presence of gold tellurides). The leach pretreatment stage was shown to be detrimental and was shut down. Lime titration was introduced as part of the process control. It was shown that the leach could be performed at low dissolved oxygen, (ie 3 - 5 ppm) to avoid sulfide oxidation and the associated high cyanide and lime consumption. Plant results showed reduced cyanide consumption (40 per cent) and an accelerated leaching rate, whereby most of the gold was dissolved in 24 hours compared to 72 hours used previously. Similar work was performed at KCGMÆs Fimiston plant, which leached a combined ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate along with the slimes fraction from hydrocycloning the bulk flotation concentrate. The use of lead nitrate, high lime and carbon-in-leach generated a faster leaching rate and minimised adsorption of gold on fine pyrite particles. The grind, previously controlled with a P80, was replaced by a P98 to give a better operational indication of top size hydrocyclone performance. Before the implementation of the changes, average leach residues for slimes and UFG were respectively 4.0 g/t and 5.5 g/t. With the modifications to the leaching regime, average leach residues were lower by 1.5 - 2.0 g/t. Whilst significant improvements have been demonstrated, further work is progressing at KCGM to further reduce ultra-fine concentrate leach tail grades, and also to improve the understanding of concentrate refractoriness and the factors responsible for differences between laboratory and plant leach results. Estimated profits since the implementation of the new approach are in the range of $A3.5 million per year.

Twelve years ago, Jeffrey Mining Machinery Division of Dresser Industries Inc. developed the 120H HELIMINER. This machine was the world's first fixed-drum continuous miner and soon became the standard among manufacturers of continuous miners throughout the mining machinery industry. This paper will first outline a brief history of continuous miner development, then discuss significant parameters which are essential to a successful continuous miner design, and finally describe a number of specific applications of Jeffrey continuous miners in a variety of materials, such as coal, potash, iron ore, and trona, around the world.
