Despite significant advances in the platform technologies that could form part of a system of mine automation, the goal of full automation in most underground mining applications remains distant. This is because the industry developed these platform technologies to achieve local improvements in safety, machine and labour productivity, and asset utilisation, rather than to work towards a goal of a complete system of automation for general application in underground mines. This paper reviews the history and current state of automation in the underground mining industry and uses lessons learnt from the automobile and general manufacturing industries to gain insight into the opportunities and pitfalls in the complex and uncertain path to automation of underground mines. It also evaluates the relevance of the current drivers of interest in the industry. From this, we hope to engender an attainable vision of automation in underground mining and determine the best development path, process and timeline to achieve this vision.

"It has been recognised that the presence of clay minerals in ores adversely affect flotation performance. In this study, changes in rheological properties of the flotation pulps under normal operating conditions were studied with additions of bentonite and kaolinite clays at various concentrations. Zeta potential measurements were also carried out to determine the changes in surface charge due to adsorption of clay particles. The results showed that bentonite clay adversely affects floatability of pyrite while kaolinite clay had a lesser influence on flotation of pyrite. The addition of Ca2+ ions to the pulp containing bentonite modified the rheological characteristics and in turn improved the pyrite flotation. It was also observed Ca2+ ions suppressed the swelling properties of bentonite and altered surface charge properties of bentonite clay particles. It has been shown that the flow index affected the ultimate recovery and it may provide a means to monitor flotation performance in routine plant operations.Citation:Basnayaka, L, Subasinghe, N and Albijanic, B, 2016. A commonplace, sometimes overlooked or taken for granted, article of everyday existence is the tin can. Produced from thin gauge low carbon steel, and commonly coated with a mere 60 millionths of an inch of pure tin, the product is however strong and corrosion resistant. Tin-plate serves a myriad of purposes-the most important being to meet the requirements of the canning industry. Australia's newest steel product, tin-plate, was first produced on a commercial scale during the early part of August, 1957. The commissioning of the Hot Dip Tinning Plant (Fig. 1) of The Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. at Port Kembla, marked the culmination of a proposal dating back to 1939, the advent of World War II having caused its deferment to the present time.Cornish tin is known to have been exported as early as 300 B.C. to Syria and tinned vessels existed even in the year A.D. 23. The tin coating of plate could be described as an ancient art, believed to have had its origin in Bohemia in the thirteenth century. To discuss this relationship both the problems of the mechanisms of ore accumulation and the origin and cause of volcanism must be faced. Volcanic activity is associated with hydrothermal activity but the causes of volcanism are inseparable from the problems of the origin of magmas generally. To be more in accord with the inevitable reaction between water and silicates at high temperature, it is suggested that reconsidera- tion be given to the role of water in magmas such that our general concept of magmas becomes one of hot hydrous pastes rather than melts with water in them. It is claimed that a general concept of magmas as gelatinous hydrosilicate masses is a far better assumption because the rheological and diffusive properties of such materials enables an adequate explanation of a greater number of observations. It is consistent with the mergence of magmatic and metamorphic rocks and requires low to modest temperatures at the time of liquifaction allowing convergence with mobilised and disturbed sediment masses. The Dugald River lead-zinc-silver deposit is located approximately 60 km north-west of Cloncurry and 87 km north-east of Mount Isa. The development project is expected to turn operational in 2018. The resource is estimated to contain 61.1 Mt at 12.6 per cent zinc, 1.9 per cent lead and 34 g/t silver, with a projected mine life of 25 years. The evolution from exploration project to development project has presented multiple challenges for the technical team. Understanding and modelling the structural complexity of the deposit has been one of these challenges.Historically fault zones were logged as a lithology, with structural measurements recorded in a separate database table. When underground drill programs and development commenced in late 2012, it was recognised the deposit was more structurally complex than had been modelled. The extensive number of fault zone lithologies in core logging, made it difficult to identify fault trends and model faults in 3D software packages.In 2014, a structural project was conducted to produce a fault model for the deposit. The project highlighted that by logging the faults as a lithology, a shortage of fault characteristics was being recorded. Additionally, structural information could not be filtered to identify different fault sets due to the lack of information available to filter on. One of the major outcomes of the study was to change the methodology for the structural logging of drill core.Faults are now logged in a separate structural log. The structural log collects two types of information: interval data and point data. The interval data represents the damage zone of the fault in the surrounding rock and the point data the plane of movement for the fault. The faults are further characterised by their intensity on a scale of one to five, the type of fault structure (fault breccia, fault vein etc), the minerals present on the fault surface and structural measurements when available.The new data set allows fault data to be filtered based on fault characteristics, making implicit and explicit modelling of the faults more timely and accurate. The data set can be used to produce fault wireframes as single surfaces from the point data or hanging wall and footwall surfaces from the interval data. The value of water is defined by its marginal utility. Challenges arise where the marginal utility is difficult to estimate. Therefore, when two or more interested parties wish to access water and they cannot use commensurate units for marginal utility; other means of value comparison must be sought. It is asserted here that sustainability principles can be used to guide this valuation if this is supported by a transparent decision framework. This paper proposes that the ICMM sustainable development principles provide appropriate guidance. In addition, a generic framework for decision making is suggested as a complement. Indicators of water management are recognised widely as an integral part of the accountability of minerals companies towards meeting sustainability goals. Less widely recognised are the ways in which sustainability principles can be used to guide decisions on water management which demonstrate growing awareness of its value. This paper illustrates the use of this logic in water issues associated with global sustainability challenges. It then goes on to demonstrate, using examples, that these links exist at all levels of the minerals industry and that indicators of this type are potentially as powerful as those currently being used. The reason for this is that the path from cause to effect is transparent and direct.

Over the last thirty years production of heavy minerals from Australian deposits has dominated the world market. The main incentive has been to suoply the raw material for titanium dioxide based pigments. These ~ninerals include ilmenite, rutile, leticoxene and more recently, synthetic rutile. Inevitably the viabilit/ of developing placer type deposits has seen influenced by other heavy minerals present, such as zircon and monazite, but these have been of secondary importance. For most of the sixties and seventies, Australia supplied the 'najority of free world rutile and zircon, and a large proportion of the ilmenite. With the run-down of rutile- rich reserves in eastern Australia, the emphasis has s:iifted in several countries, including Australia, to fill }the gap with i l Wen i to and its derivatives, leucoxene, synthetic rutile and titanium rich slag. over the next 15 - 20 years, as high grade beach placers in Western Australia are mined out, less traditional sources for mineral sands products will be opened up. Low grade placers (particularly those dominated by ilmenite) will be reassessed in Australia, U.S.A., Africa and Asia, and exploration will shift from beach and dune environment, to heavy mineral concentrations in alluvials, lake deposits and continental shelf deposits. At the same time, production of anatase and bastnaesite will be expanded, as required, from the huge resources contained in carbonatites in 3razil, U.S.A. and China.

Until 1937, the mining of ore was carried out by conventional methods, using pneumatic drills and standard drill steel. The adoption of the diamond drill, formerly used for exploration work, for blast hole drilling in stopes, was first developed by Noranda Mines Limited, Noranda, Quebec, although it had been used previously in Northern Ontario and Western United States, to remove weak pillars and ore remnants left by conventional methods. Previous to the adoption of the diamond drill method at Noranda, a sub-level benching system of stoping was used. Sub-levels were driven at 35 ft. intervals and the benches drilled off by pneumatic drills using sectional steel. Results were very satisfactory, in sulphide ore, where the drilling was comparatively easy, but in the harder rhyolitestopes the footage drilled per machine-shift was only half of that obtained in the sulphide stopes, and owing to the high gauge loss, there was often difficulty in drilling holes to the required depth. This led to trials with the diamond drill for this type of work. While the cost per foot was more than with sectional steel, an appreciable saving in development work could be made by increasing the sublevel interval from 35 ft. to 60 ft., and stope widths from 60 to 100 ft. This saving, together with the increase in blasting efficiency, resulted in a substantial reduction in overall costs.CONDITIONS FOR SUCCESSFUL APPLICATIONWhile long diamond drill blast-hole mining has widespread application, there are certain conditions which appear to be desirable, if not absolutely necessary, for its successful use.

Roasting of sulphide and sulph-arsenide gold ores produces unwanted emission of sulphur and arsenic oxides, and a less than complete recovery of gold. Pyrite loses sulphur and arsenopyrite loses arsenic at a useful rate at temperatures of 600¦C and above in an inert atmosphere. Sulphur and arsenic driven off can be condensed before entering the atmosphere. During the process, solid-solution gold redistributes itself on internal surfaces of the resulting iron sulphide. Two subsequent processing options may be used; direct cyanidation of the porous sulphide resulting from the anoxic pyrolysis, or a second-stage roast to oxidise the remaining iron sulphide. The first option may be viable under certain conditions of pyrolysis. The two-stage option has an environmental advantage over the traditional roast because it reduces oxide vapour emissions by 50 per cent. The second stage may provide nearly enough energy to sustain the entire process.

The Joint Committee of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM) and the Australian Mining Industry Council (AMIC) have published a Code for the Reporting of Identified Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves. The Code is the result of an initiative begun in 1971 to achieve industry self regulation of Resources and Ore Reserves reporting which resulted first in guidelines for reporting standards but which have now been incorporated in ASX Listing Rules as a Code with significant sanctions ensuring compliance. This paper describes the background to the Code, its key provisions, and comments on practical aspects of working with the Code and compliance issues.

The Porgera gold mine, located in the highlands of Papua New Guinea, produced 7.7 Moz of gold between 1990 and 1998. Reserves are estimated to be 12 Moz of Au. The deposit is associated with 6 Ma-old mafic alkalic intrusions emplaced at shallow levels into unconsolidated Jurassic and Cretaceous sediments, where they caused the formation of peperites. The mineralisation consists of an earlier base-metal-sulphide-rich stage with sericite-carbonate alteration (stage I), and a later phase represented by quartz-roscoelite veins (stage II). New styles of mineralisation and alteration have been recognised at depth in association with stage I. They consist of the assemblages magnetite-chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite and biotite-actinolite-anhydrite respectively. In addition, the recent recognition of adularia in some stage II veins (with roscoelite) confirms the similarity of this style of mineralisation with other adularia-sericite or low-sulphidation epithermal deposits.

The Western Australian School of Mines (WASM), Kalgoorlie, has been performing dynamic testing of reinforcement systems as part of the Minerals and Energy Research Institute of Western Australia (MERIWA) Projects M349 and M349A sponsored by WASM, the Western Australian State Government and the mining industry. These projects have resulted in the construction and commissioning of the WASM Dynamic Test Facility and a program of reinforcement system testing. The primary purpose of the WASM projects is to evaluate the performance of complete reinforcement systems when subjected to an axial dynamic load. The test procedure, monitoring and associated analysis enable assessments for each component (ie the element, the internal fixing mechanism and the surface hardware) of the reinforcement system. The performance of a reinforcement system is usually defined by a static force-displacement response to axial loading. However, this static response may not be applicable to dynamic loadings associated with violent failure of rock due to overstressing as mines progress to greater depths. It was therefore appropriate that the responses of reinforcement systems subjected to dynamic loading be defined and evaluated. The key findings from the tests on a number of reinforcement systems are presented and recommendations made regarding their application for dynamic loading.

This paper focuses on the significant impact that geological information has in relation to the valuation, both equity market and accounting records, of mining companies. There are many different measures adopted by investors and analysts in valuing mining companies. In particular, focus is primarily on calculation of profit as it is the authors primary expertise. The importance of geological information to the calculation of profit (and to many other measures of a mining company performance) is not always understood by the geologist. The aim of this paper is to raise the awareness of geologists (particularly those who are competent persons under the JORC code) of the impact that reserve statements û and changes to û have on profits. This is the first time that this subject has been presented directly to geologists. Similar versions of this paper have been presented at other forums where other important users (directors, auditors, accountants, analysts, investors) or preparers of financial statements have been made aware of the importance of the geological information. In essence, all mining companies prepare annual financial statements, which are adopted by directors and audited. The major items that require judgement generally revolve around two areas û commodity price outlook and the accuracy of reserves and resources. Reserves and resources are important, and that there is undoubtedly a lack of understanding about the assumptions and accuracy of reserves and resources by accountants, directors and auditors, and a general lack of understanding by geologists as to how the information that they prepare is used. Across the globe the majority of mining companies are listed on stock exchanges (with the main exception being nationally controlled mining companies û eg Codelco). In a very simplistic manner, I have divided all mining companies into three types: exploration plays û these companies are still in the finding or proving modeÆ and typically the stock market and investors rely on geological information and remaining cash in determining their assessment of the company; single mine companies û the major items that investors and the stock market look for are reserves, inferred resources, commodity price outlook and discounted cashflow calculations; and multiple mine companies û the investment community and stock market are looking at reserves, inferred resources (generally to a lesser extent at this stage), commodity price outlook, discounted cashflow calculations and profit and loss accounts. Regardless of the type of company, the equity markets, including analysts, try to determine appropriate valuations for mining companies. In doing this the major two areas that require judgemental consideration are the commodity price outlook and the level of reserves and resources. Generally speaking, most mining companies have a strong understanding of their cost structures û in particular their cash costs as distinct from their accounting costs of production û and therefore this area generally gets less consideration than the other two matters mentioned above.

The ground vibration produced by the bench blasts of a single hole and a row of two or three holes is recorded in an iron mine. Using the seismic signal generated by a single-hole shot as the source function, we have developed a computer program of a simulating ground vibration by bench blast. The reasonable delay time of blast in the iron mine has been discussed tentatively with the Fourmap invented by Anderson, D.A. The seismograms measured from the single-row blasts of two or three holes have shown the method of simulating vibration is feasible on the whole. For large scale production blasts, a combination of the vibration simulation and the high-speed photograph is used to choose the delay Time.

Case Study: Dragline Swing to Dump Automation By Peter Corke, CSIRO Manufacturing Technology/CRC for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE) Peter Corke presented a case study of a project to automate the dragline swing to dump operation. The project is funded by ACARP, BHP Coal, Pacific Coal and the CMTE and is being carried out on a dragline at Pacific Coal's Meandu mine near Brisbane. Corke began by highlighting that the minerals industry makes extensive use of large, mechanised machines. However, unlike other industries, mining has not adopted automation and most machines are controlled by human operators on board the machine itself. Choosing an automation target The dragline automation was chosen because: ò draglines are one of the biggest capital assets in a mine; ò performance between operators vary significantly, so improved capital utilisation is possible; ò the dragline is often the bottleneck in production; ò a large part of the operation cycle is spent swinging from dig to dump; and ò it is technically feasible. There has been a history of drag line automation projects, none with great success.

The subject of octanes and knock in petrol engines is of general interest, not only to the engineers and chemists in the petroleum and automotive industries, but also to the motorist who wishes to see some light through the haze of propaganda regarding "super" petrols. A mixture of petrol vapour and air will explode when a spark is passed through it if it contains more than one and a half per cent. or less than six per cent. of petrol vapour by volume. In a petrol engine the mixture has to be within the explosive range before it will operate. When the spark is passed it 'ignites the petrol vapour-air mixture which burns with rapid but finite progress of the flame front 'through the unburnt gases in much the same manner that a charge of dynamite is consumed. The turbulence of the gases in the cylinder under normal operating conditions more than doubles the velocity of the flame front and enables the combustion to be completed by the end of the working (expansion) stroke:KNOCKIf the cylinder head 'is poorly designed or is covered with a deposit of carbon, it is possible for "hot spots" to develop, and these can ignite the mixture before the spark is passed. This pre-ignition gives rise to an engine knock but is accompanied by a dull thud rather than the ringing knock associated with the true "knocking" found in a petrol engine and attributed to the detonation of the mixture. In presenting this address I am conscious of the honour that has been paid me in my election to this important office, and I am very aware that I follow, in the position of President, many distinguished men who have led the Institute over the 70 years since its inauguration in Broken Hill in 1893.It is perhaps appropriate tonight that I intend to talk about a metal which recalls the birth-place of the Institute, and is also one with which I have had a direct association throughout the whole of my working career. This metal is Silver.Silver is associated traditionally in everyone's mind with money and silverware, and has always been prized for its natural beauty and elegance. It is today one of the few metals in which world consumption has outstripped production, and the events which have occurred to bring about this situation make an interesting story.In telling this story, I propose firstly to indicate our development as a silver producing country, give an historical review of the metal, trace its use as currency and the factors influencing its price, and then say something of the old and new uses of silver.
