New Zealand Steel Limited is nearing completion of the environmental reporting and planning procedures for its proposed fivefold expansion to steelmaking at Glenbrook, and supporting mining operations at Waikato North Head. A report on the proposal to transport concentrate from the mining operations to Glenbrook has also been prepared and is awaiting release. This paper draws from these events, and by discussing some of the problems encountered, gives some guidelines for the preparation of an Environmental Impact Report.

A variety of rockbolt designs and resin anchors are currently in use in underground mines. This paper identifies possible risk factors that may affect the intended performance of rockbolts. The paper also presents the outcome of a study on the variability of some aspects of fully encapsulated rockbolts undertaken across seven coal mines within the context of previous research findings on rockbolt anchorage performance.

In all electrolytic zinc plants cadmium is removed as an impurity prior to the zinc electrowinning stage of the process. Cadmium metal is the favoured form of this by-product and most plants use an electrolytic route for its production. The formation of dendrites in cadmium electrowinning processes is the major limitation to deposition rates. There is an economic incentive, therefore, to better understand the factors affecting their growth. A technique that has been used by others to examine fundamental aspects of dendrite growth has been applied to industrial strength electrolytes. It involves potentiostatic deposition in a cell containing the electrolyte of interest. The variation in the current with time at a given overpotential allows the determination of the dendritic growth induction time. A method was developed (the Locus method) from the investigation of a set of such potentiostatic curves, obtained over a range of applied overpotentials, that appears to give a measure of electrolyte quality with respect to dendritic growth in galvanostatic deposition. The Locus technique predicts that zinc at industrial concentrations in cadmium electrolytes should have a significant effect on morphology and that deterioration of morphology will occur as the zinc concentration in the electrolyte is increased. This effect is consistent with literature prediction and was shown to relate to a reduction of the diffusion limiting current density. Magnafloc R333 is used as an additive at Pasminco Metals-EZ to control the morphology of cadmium deposits and the Locus method was successful in predicting its dendrite inhibiting properties. A possible mechanism is discussed. This work has opened avenues for future research with respect to a technique that may have an industrial application in electrolyte characterisation and has pointed to a direction in which better understanding of galvanostatic dendritic growth may be found.

Research on gas distribution in the iron- making blast furnace has been conducted in three separate areas. Firstly, experimental work has been conducted to determine the important parameters which dictate the pressure losses in homogeneous and heterogen- eous packed beds. Secondly, a theoretical analysis of gas flow through the furnace softening-melting zone has been undertaken to determine the effect of the shape of the zone on the distribution of gas flow towards the furnace walls. Thirdly, a theoretical programme has been undertaken to develop methods for the prediction of furnace soften- ing-melting zone shape from furnace tempera- ture and gas composition measurements.

Hazard analysis utilizes interaction mecha- nisms in combination with geologic, structural and mining conditions to delineate areas of potential damage in seams subject to interaction. Using characterizations of conditions peculiar to multi- seam mining, such as innerburden thickness, geol- ogy and structures, initial interaction contour maps can be constructed. Geologic hazard analysis is then carried out on roof, pillar and floor condi- tions in the affected seam using lower seam rock properties and layout geometries in the overlying seam. Either safety factors or damage ratings can then be developed representing degree of hazard in the lower seam. The final hazard map shows both the aerial extent and magnitude of potential dam- age from interaction.

This paper presents an economic study comparing two gold recovery processes, zinc precipitation (Merrill-Crowe) and carbon-in-pulp (CIP). Capital, operating, and gold losses costs from an actual CIP plant study are compared to costs developed from a hypothetical Merrill-Crowe process flowsheet. ' Results indicate an overall economic advantage to CIP over Merrill-Crowe for plants processing slurries within the range of the five gold solution grades selected for this study.

Currently, underground mining of deeper massive deposits with lower grades, harder rock conditions in high strength environments, entails difficulties in caving, fragmentation and seismicity of the orebody.So far, the use of preconditioning (PC) with hydraulic fracturing (HF) has shown positive results in terms of seismic response and caving performance, while PC combined with explosives aims to weaken the rock mass, causing an additional effect on fragmentation.In particular, mines commonly referred to as ‘supercaves’, operated by caving methods, have the need to integrate mine to plant processes, where rock fragmentation appears as a key tool. In fact, it implies making mining and comminution processes more efficient to the plant and for mines, it justifies the search of innovative solutions in drilling and blasting techniques to precondition the rock mass. The following paper aims to show the feasibility of numerical blast modelling to weaken the rock mass using explosives, mainly through sensitivity analysis applied to designs to minimise bias and uncertainty in the results. It is shown how the presence of structures, their geometry and in situ stresses influence or interfere with the PC method being used.From the work, it is concluded that better knowledge on the application of explosives weakening allows specialists to strengthen numerical models associated with every design and therefore previously validate their applicability, helping to understand complex phenomena such as the propagation of mechanical waves in non-elastic heterogeneous media. In this sense, it is understood that while there are studies (Sanchidrián, Segarra and López, 2006) showing that the transfer of energy in the rock mass could be even greater in a confined environment, the more competent rock mass and higher in situ stresses interfere mostly on the effectiveness of a technique using explosives.CITATION:Gottreux, I, Córdova, E, González, P and Videla, J, 2016. There are- several in-seam coal research projects currently under investigation by the Cooperative Research Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE). The overall aim of the projects is to produce new technologies to enhance safety and the efficiency of in-seam gas drainage drilling. Results from high pressure waterjet rotary drilling trials indicate that by applying high pressure water to a rotary drill bit, the hole can be drilled to follow the planned trajectory very closely. Steerable drill bits for drilling long holes (>1 km) have been produced and trialed. A flexible high speed drilling system provides a capacity for rapid in-seam drilling, particularly suited to cross panel drainage. Geophysical tools are being developed to provide a geological steering capability and a better understanding of potential gas outbursts zones.

Pressure on production at New Zealand China Clays has led to the development of a dewatering control loop for fine halloysite china clay. The development was based on the analysis of data from the automation of plate and frame filter presses. The analysis of the data has led to process changes, and the ability to quickly solve dewatering problems. As a result of control in the dewatering circuit press times have reduced on average 117% and output has increased proportionally.

Magnesium is the lightest metal used in structural applications but these are only a small part of magnesium usage, with the use in aluminium alloys consuming half the magnesium produced. Other applications include steel desulphurisation, nodular iron manufacture and metal reduction. Demand for magnesium is expected to increase towards the end of the decade because of a requirement to lighten the weight of automobiles. The current western world plant capacity and production rate is 250 000 tpa. The CIS and PRC also have production capacity but shipments from these countries have been limited in the last half of 1994. The price for magnesium has followed trends similar to aluminium with recent recovery from US$1500 per tonne in 1992 and 1993 to US$4000 per tonne in 1995. The major magnesium producers all use different production methods and the potential exists to establish a large-scale magnesium industry with operating and capital costs comparable to aluminium. The Australian Magnesium Research and Development Project has been established to develop a low cost method of production using the magnesite and infrastructure resources in Central Queensland.

Mine ore, reduced to minus 71/2 in. by primary crushers, is stockpiled. Size reduction of the reclaimed material by secondary and tertiary crushers is achieved in a closed circuit crushing and screening plant. Screen products of minus 30 mm plus 6 mm lump, and minus 6 mm fines are stockpiled by conveyor and stacker systems prior to rail despatch 10 port facilities at Dampier. Crusher settings, determined from experience, are closely maintained to obtain the desired lump/fines ratio. Chemical and sizing analyses from automatically taken samples are used to maintain product specifications. The beneficiation plant upgrades the fines product when this is necessary. The recorded wear life of individual plant components is the basis of a planned maintenance programme.

They are driven by an unrelenting curiosity to go beyond the boundaries of the known, to explore into the nature of things, to reveal connections between ideas, facts, conceptions, to view things from new angles, to change perceptions. A well-known fact about the construction industry - and underground construction in particular - is that all projects are unique. The degree of complexity due to the intertwining of the variety of project-related parameters is higher than in many other industries, thus forcing contractors as well as suppliers to be truly adaptable and flexible. The enormous advantages of shotcrete as a construction and rock support process and the improvement of materials, equipment and application know-how have made it a very important and necessary tool for modern underground construction works. The development of modem wet shotcreting in particular has enlarged the field of underground construction work. Projects that were impossible to be realised, have now become practicable. Subsurface structures can be placed where they are needed, without regards as to rock and soil conditions.

Underground mine planning is characterised by a series of designs, starting with prefeasibility and culminating in operational. Information on the mineralisation and geotechnical conditions is available in increasing levels of detail, as development occurs. In the recently completed AMIRA Planning and Rapid Integrated Mine Optimisation (PRIMO) project, a methodology for producing good strategic and then tactical designs using new optimisation tools, was developed. At the strategic level, fundamental decisions must be made such as those relating to cut-off grade, bench heights, mining methods, access and haulage systems, properties of the mill, etc. The inputs are the block and financial models, geotechnical data, infrastructure and production costs, etc. Stope definition for strategic designs includes bench RLs (relative levels), orebody envelopes, and design and placement of amalgamated or simplified stopes. If multiple mining methods are under consideration, then stopes need to be associated with these. Access design must take into account decisions such as declines versus shafts, a template for level layouts and the topology of the access network. Some of the geotechnical and physical constraints are relaxed for strategic design stages. Strategic scheduling is high level, from a month to a year at a time. In the PRIMO project, software tools have been developed enabling the mine planner to rapidly produce a large number of such strategic designs. After the designs have been evaluated, the highest value designs are chosen and a small number of these can then be further refined at a tactical level. For these designs, the first step is determination of all stopes meeting physical and geotechnical requirements and constraints, allowing for complex stope shapes. Next, detailed layout of the mine access network is obtained, satisfying all operational and geotechnical constraints. Finally, more detailed scheduling is performed, over shorter time periods. The Melbourne University group has focused on optimal access design. In particular, the access network is optimised for minimum cost, taking into account the cost of haulage and development over the lifetime of the mine. Costs vary over the different parts of the network depending on the quantity of haulage and so a weighted network optimisation problem has to be solved. We have developed two software tools for this task, decline optimisation tool (DOT) and planar underground network optimiser (PUNO). DOT produces an optimal network of declines and crosscuts connecting access points on the levels to a portal or break-out point from existing infrastructure. PUNO designs the level layout, including footwall and hanging wall drives, development drives and connections to vent raises. A survey will be given of the capabilities of DOT and PUNO when used on some recent case studies. Our current goals include incorporating some aspects of ventilation design and modelling the development costs when additional ground support is required. This is an abstract only. For the purpose of this paper the Otago Region is that covered by the Otago Regional Council. This area, like other South Island Regions, has a river system starting in the Mountains and are all gravel bed rivers. The gravel from these rivers has been the major source of aggregate in the region since the development of the province began. The majority of the aggregate is a mix of greywacke, schist and quartz, which will be referred to later with its production problems. The region has been broken down into various areas.

The most usual design alternatives to be considered from both physical and economic -viewpoints are listed and a summary is given of the main factors to be costed in assessing the relative economics of each alternative. A brief statement of the recor mended method af economic. assessment is given and an example is included. The paper aims to present a reasonably accurate, simple and practical method of considering the main economic factors which govern design.

Being inclined to metaphors, one could be forgiven to think that politicians act this verb and captain the Nation's ship into some definite course. In the case of at least the mineral resources industry, it seems that there are not many James Cook followers in our parliaments: Australia's approach to mineral and energy policy is often chaotic - witness the 1935 to 1961 ban on iron ore export-ing which prevented the development of a significant steel industry at time when the World was hungry for this metal, just to mention one amongst many other examples.The follies of Australia's mineral policies are well il-lustrated in the case of uranium mining. Although Australia had the Western World's largest economic reserves of uranium, it is onlythefifth producing nation and its uranium potential is largely unrealised. At the root of this situation are the interventionist attitudes and policies of successive Federal Governments which for more than four decades distorted the Investment decision and, in more recent times. discouraaed investment.

Financial risk analysis provides the tools to examine the uncertainty of capital decisions in new mining ventures. This paper explores the methodology by which financial risks can be studied and quantified. The most commonly used risk evaluation methods, such as sensitivity analysis and discount rate adjustment, are presented as an introduction to a more comprehensive discussion of stochastic methods of discounted cash flow analysis using Monte Carlo sampling. The discussion is illustrated with examples of a stochastic discounted cash flow. The advantages of Monte Carlo sampling in risk analysis are discussed together with its problems, particularly those originating from the correlation amongst the variables that determine the economic output of a mining venture, and the difficulties created by insufficient data, imperfect knowledge and complexity. The paper also surveys the most commonly used software used in risk analysis.

Since 1980, the Department of Mining Engineering at Kyushu University, in co-operation with the Ikeshima Colliery, Matsushima Coal Mining Co. Ltd., has been conducting a research project into longwall gateroad designs applicable to deep and poor strata conditions. During this period, the economic environment has drastically changed the situation of the domestic coal mining industry. Conventionally, the retreat longwall method, with re-use of gateroad, has been employed as it achieves higher recovery. However, from the view point of production efficiency, this method is not suitable because it requires intensive work in side packing and roadway maintenance. Therefore an interpanel-pillar system, or a two-entry gateroad system, was adopted to identify the factors responsible for excessive vertical closure in longwall gateroads. Field measurements and non-linear finite element analyses were undertaken to confirm the performance of this system. Study results indicate that the stability of the gateroad employing the rib pillar system is comparable to that of the conventional system of re-using Gateroads.

The influence of pulp potential on the flotation behaviour of sulphide minerals in laboratory batch flotation tests is discussed in terms of self-induced flota- tion, collector-induced flotation, and depression.' Assuming that the pulp poten- tial is controlled by the same factors that determine the genuine redox poten- tial, an attempt is made to interpret the experimental results in terms of potential-dependent reactions based on bulk thermodynamic data. Self-induced flotation is displayed by many sulphides in moderately oxidizing solutions but not in reducing solutions. The available evidence suggests that the hydrophobic entity could be sulphur produced by superficial oxidation of the mineral but this has not been established beyond dispute. In general, flotation is observed near the potentials at which sul- phur would be expected to form and the minerals which produce sulphur seem to float the most strongly. Collector-induced flotation is most conveniently studied on minerals which have only slight self-induced floatab- ility. The mineral-collector interaction is potential-dependent hence flotation is generally only observed in limited ranges of potentials. While the general form of the floatability-potential relationship is similar to that predicted from thermody- namic data close correspondence between predicted and experimental results is not always observed.

This paper reviews the role of fill in mining including consolidated fill both histor- ically and currently as determined by a recent survey of the Fill Subcommittee of the Canadian Advisory Committee on Rock Mechanics (CACRM). It covers the application of fill in modern min- ing methods including mechanized cut and fill, undercut and fill, post pillar cut and fill and longhole pillar recovery between stabilized fill. An automated fill preparation plant and recent developments in rotary drilling of hydraulic fill conducting holes are described briefly. The paper also summarizes the findings of some of the important laboratory and field work carried out on the behaviour of fill in Canada, the United States and Australia and again draws on current information obtained from the Fill Subcommittee of the CACRM. Space limitations and unavailability of suitable material prohi- bit the summary of similar information from other countries.
