The seams of black coal occurring in Victoria are so disturbed by faulting, wash-outs, thinning, etc., that it is necessary, for the prevention of costly errors in development, that close boring be undertaken so that the correct positions of the shafts, tunnels, main and auxiliary roadways can be set out in order that the area can be economically worked. The State Coal Mine has two boring plants continuously at work, which have given good service for the last twenty-five years.The information supplied herein is merely our experience in boring at the State Coal Mine over an extended period. The type of plant in use is that known as the Victoria Drilling Plant, equipped with an 11 h.p. portable oil engine, using power kerosene as fuel. It was purchased in 1914, complete with mechanism for cable drilling, capable of boring to a depth of 1500 ft. with a guarantee of 1000 ft., with Calyx cutters, boring rods and all necessary equipment for the sum of £1473. The chief mechanical features of the plant are as follows:-The derrick is in the shape of a tripod (see Fig. 1), two of the legs being of steel channel built together to form a frame which, when lowered on to two sets of road wheels, forms a carriage for the transport of a portion of the boring equipment. The third leg is made of oregon in the form of a double bow, with bolts and distance pieces between the wooden sides. The top of this is hinged on to the steel frame, and the bottom is fitted into a cast iron block, having two small wheels to facilitate erection. A custom-made set-up that measures bubble coalescence time and the thin film balance (TFB) technique were used to explore the role of residual xanthate (potassium amyl xanthate, PAX) and salt (NaCl) on the adsorption of two frothers (methyl isobutyl carbinol-MIBC, and di-propylene glycolDPG) at the air-water interface. This paper is primarily focused on the comparison of these two techniques in studying the interaction between the flotation reagents and salt emphasizing their capabilities and limits. The results from the coalescence rig showed that the presence of PAX improved the stability of bubbles in both frother solutions and led to a bubble coalescence inhibition at 50–500 ppm DPG. These measures were compared with the results from the TFB. Findings from the TFB were overall in good agreement with the bubble coalescence time, but a higher stability level was observed in thin films under the same condition. The effect of salt on the frother and PAX mixture was also explored, and the results showed an adverse impact of the salt on the interaction of frother and PAX with both techniques. However, variations were found between them in some cases. The TFB is much more sensitive to the presence of dissolved gas and oil droplets.

Froth structure and stability are known to play important roles in determining mineral flotation recovery and selectivity. However, measuring froth stability in a consistent manner remains a significant challenge, especially at an industrial scale. Following preliminary tests on a copper concentration plant, a quantitative dynamic stability measure is investigated in this study in order to extend the results over a wider range of conditions and on a different orebody. The technique is based on the Bikerman foam test and uses a non-overflowing froth column to quantify froth stability. Experiments were carried out using an automated version of the froth stability column under different operating conditions. Air flowrate was the key operating variable. Tests were reproduced on a single flotation cell of a Platinum Group Metals concentrator. The froth stability factor, , was measured for each operating condition, and compared with the air recovery in the cell, , which was measured using image analysis. The froth stability column results gave the same trends as image analysis. In particular the froth stability factor was found to be linearly related to the actual fraction of air overflowing the cell. The metallurgical results clearly indicated that changes in air flowrate result in variations in flotation performance that can be attributed to changes in froth stability. The results showed that high froth stability conditions occur at intermediate air flowrates, and result in improved flotation performance. It is found that the froth stability column is a simple, cost-effective and reliable method for quantifying froth stability, and for indicating changes in flotation performance.

Cataclysmic or flood-like release of gas-charged brines, hydrocarbons and slurries accompanied widespread mineralisation of Upper Devonian environments. These are well represented in the Canning and Burdekin Basins of Western Australia and Queensland respectively.The Burdekin Basin provides particularly instructive vein structural sequences. These fall into organic residue to carbonate paragenetic sequences which are known elsewhere to record progressive decarboxylation. Fibrous veins indicate overpressure in fractures with organic residues, acids and gas derivatives driven to overlying groundwater flows. This combination of large flow rates and potent organic mineralisers led to extensive arsenical rare-metal mineralisation which is similar to that concentrated in Upper Devonian extinction horizons of the Canning Basin. Organic-residue mineralisation appears concentrated by certain hvdrostructures and targeted upon particular species. These controls need to be understood to guide modern management stragegies for mineralised organic and nitrogenous wastes.

With the expansion of magnetite projects in Australia has come the opportunity to take advantage of newer technologies that were not necessarily available when the magnetite industries of North America and Europe were maturing. One of these technologies is the IsaMill, originally developed for the economic treatment of ultra-fine grind (UFG) duties of Mount Isa Mines. As understanding of the IsaMill has increased, so too has the ability to process coarser feeds while maintaining the same energy efficiency advantage and tight product size distribution that originally made the IsaMill so attractive. In the case of magnetite the hard non-elastic ceramic grinding media is ideally suited to the grinding duty when compared to steel grinding media. The centripetal separator and naturally steep product size distribution curve provide a mill discharge that maximises the critical concentrate grade. This paper analyses the effect of the IsaMill grinding technology on the full-scale Ernest Henry Mine (EHM) magnetite operation along with pilot and lab scale demonstrations of optimisation. Issues encountered and the solutions to maximise the mill throughput and quality are examined in an effort to promote better understanding across the industry. A number of rehabilitated open cast coalmines in SA are already decanting. The paper focuses on the situation at one of these mines where the following information exist: monthly decant rates and rainfall; sulfate concentrations of the decanting water; water level measurements inside the mine prior to decanting; ABA analyses; information about the rehabilitation (drainage slope, vegetation, soil used). A 2D-model was constructed for the mine and calibrated against six years of flow data. About 85 per cent of the decant outflow rate comes from direct recharge on top of the rehabilitated mine while the other 15 per cent is derived from lateral groundwater inflows. The estimated recharge value was 17 per cent of the rainfall. Measured sulfate values showed that the sulfate generation rate for the mine was in the order of 7 kg/ha/d. Conclusions from the study are:most of the water decanting from rehabilitated open cast coal mines is derived from recharge via rainfall; given a specific sulfate generation rate, then: the lower the recharge the less the decant rate but the higher the sulfate concentration of the decanting water and vice versa; future prediction of the decant rate must be stochastic according to expected percentile monthly rainfall values; and as a first assessment of the predicted sulfate concentration of decant water from rehabilitated open case mines, the 7 kg/ha/d sulfate generation rate can be used.

Hydraulic mining shovels can be successively used at open-pit mining operation in severe climatic zone with air temperature interval from -700C to +450C typical for some northern region of the world particularly of Russia, Canada and Sweden, if they would be equipped by special preheating facilities for their diesel engine, water, hydraulic oil and lubrication systems. All shovels manufactured by the Komatsu Mining Germany GmbH for operation at ambient air temperatures down to -50¦C have cast and forged structural design elements, bolted connections made of special steel grades, electric cables with special insulation, flexible high-pressure hoses manufactured by ICE-Champion with connectors made of special steel grades.Generally at the temperatures below -25¦C the ordinary machine has to be stopped, the attachment should be placed in the parking position, the generator should be switched on, or the external electrical power supply connected, for the preheating equipment. For rapid start-up in winter after a long shutdown of a hydraulic shovel, there is a procedure for preheating of the main systems. It is applied for the following systems: engine cooling system, engine oil, hydraulic oil, pumps and drive motors of the propel gears, electric cabinets, machinery house, especially near the ventilation inlets and outlets.Start-up of the main drive engine is permitted at a hydraulic oil temperature of -20¦C, when it has a viscosity of 1000 cSt. In this case the rotation speed of the diesel engine crankshaft is lower by two times than the nominal value and this is the most favourable condition of start-up of the engine and hydraulic pumps and motors, which work with half of their rated rotation speed until the hydraulic oil reaches a viscosity from 100 to 10 cSt. After that the hydraulic system and the entire shovel begin to operate under normal conditions.

Global annual gold production has been remarkably constant over the last decade at ~2500 t/a3. The major producers today are China (annual production over 350 t and rising), Australia (250 t), USA (240 t), Russia (200 t) and South Africa (190 t and falling); these figures are representative of recent years but approximate. Demand from jewellery, investment, industrial and dental uses has been in excess of mine production for the last decade, by approximately 1000 t/a.Ongoing exploration is the life-blood for gold mining, and more so than for many other metals. Explorers consider sovereign risk, security, labour costs, commercial terms, land availability and inherent geologic prospectivity to determine where to focus their activities. Exploration success over the last decade has been shared by established major producers like Australia, Canada and USA, several countries in West Africa, and many parts of the Pacific margin. Although gold-only deposits have dominated world gold production historically, the gold-plus types, especially copper-gold, are becoming more important.Australia experienced a major period of exploration success from 1979 that has led to annual gold production rising from 17 t in 1979 to 250 - 300 t/a recently. Today, Australia has economic demonstrated resources of over 9000 t Au, which has risen progressively from 220 t in 1979. The majority of production has come from gold-only deposits in the Yilgarn craton in the southern half of Western Australia, but there are a few large Proterozoic deposits in central Australia including Olympic Dam, Telfer and Starra, which are mostly gold-plus types with copper and gold. Large goldfields in the younger host rocks of eastern Australia include the gold-only deposits of Victoria and North Queensland, and gold-plus deposits of New South Wales.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. This investigation was planned to determine:1. The precipitation-hardening properties of the copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys; and2. The influence of arsenic and bismuth, singly and together, on the mechanical properties of these alloys.It was carried out in conjunction with an investigation, previously published in these Prooeedings on "The Influence of Various Elements on the Mechanical Properties of Copper containing a small percentage of Bismuth," and also formed part of a study of the influence of bismuth, nickel and phosphorus on the properties of commercial arsenical-copper.The first part of the present investigation arose out of a discovery some years ago of precipitation-hardening in phosphorus-deoxidized coppernickel boiler tubes, containing approximately 2% nickel and 0·03% phosphorus, supplied to an Australian Railways Department. At that time there was little information available on precipitation-hardening in copperrich copper-nickel-phosphorus alloys, but at the end of 1935 a short paper on the subject was published by E. C. Rollason and T. G. Bamford(2) and at the beginning of 1940 a comprehensive account was published by D. K. Crampton, H. L. Burghoff and J. T. Stacy.(3) Although the investigation carried, out independently by the present author was not as comprehensive as that of Crampton, Burghoff and Stacy, the results are in agreement with those of the American as well as of the British authors; hence, only a summary of this aspect of the work is needed here to establish a basis for a study of the influence of bismuth and arsenic.PREPARATION OF TEST PIECESAll alloys were melted under charcoal in plumbago crucibles in an oil-fired furnace and were poured out of contact with air into oil-dressed moulds to give billets either 7· 5 in. long X 0.83 in. diam. X 1·3 lb. weight or 12 in. long X 1·125 in. diam. X 3·3 lb. weight depending on requirements (the larger size was used, for example, in establishing the annealing characteristics of the precipitation-hardening alloys). The raw materials were electrolytic copper of the composition described in the previous paper(I) 6% copper-arsenic, 14% copper-phosphorus, 1:7% copper-bismuth, and Mond nickel in the form of "shot." The method of producing test pieces from these billets and the annealing treatments ana tests to which the pieces were subjected have been described in the previous paper.

Gold placers can be difficult to locate in areas where tectonic activity and paleogeography have changed significantly since placer formation. Existing placer exploration models are useful in areas that have a relatively simple geological history, identifiable relationships with parent sources, or a history of placer mining. However, exploration becomes increasingly difficult in areas where tectonic activity and sedimentary recycling repeatedly redistribute the gold. Gold placers in the Waitaki River catchment, North Otago, New Zealand have no primary source within the catchment. During the Eocene placer gold was transported by a river ('Buster River') that flowed in a northeast direction from Central Otago toward a coastline at Maerewhenua, North Otago. This river and coastal system was inundated by marine transgression during the middle Tertiary. Since the Miocene its placer deposits have been uplifted and eroded and any links with parent sources have been severed. Changes in paleogeography resulted in local reconcentration and local dilution of placer gold in different areas in the Waitaki catchment. Thin veneers of old Waitaki River gravels (Kurow Gravels), containing gold recycled from the older placers, have been deposited unconformably on strath surfaces cut into Tertiary or older rocks. These gravels along with remnant Eocene fluvial and shallow marine strata provide potential placer exploration targets. Uplift and erosion of non-auriferous rocks in the Waitaki catchment to the west and north of the study area has resulted in considerable dilution of potential placer deposits downstream, especially in areas of gravel aggradation. We present a placer exploration model that is founded on answering fundamental questions pertaining to the paleogeography and geological history of the sediments associated with the placers.

BHP Billiton, in collaboration with Sodern and CSIRO, has developed a downhole logging tool for measuring geochemistry in situ. The FastGradeTM 100 (alternatively, FG100), exploits pulsed fast and thermal neutron analysis (PFTNA) to analyse the rock. This method is based on the detection and measurement of characteristic gamma rays emitted from isotopes in the material that become briefly radioactive when they are bombarded with neutrons. The tool outputs raw spectra arising from three types of neutron interaction, namely, inelastic scattering, neutron capture and neutron activation, which occur in successive time-windows (Smith et al, 2015). The spectra contain peaks at specific energies that are characteristic of the different elements interacting with the neutrons, the gamma count of which is related to elemental concentration. BHP Billiton uses in-house data processing software to convert the measured spectra to elemental concentrations.Much work has been done to understand the tool response under a wide variety of environmental and operating conditions, including logging speed, borehole rugosity, the presence of cavities, water etc. Effort has also been directed at understanding and quantifying the current sources of error in our conventional assays due to sample collection, preparation, and laboratory instrumentation in order to use this information as a baseline to compare against the FastGradeTM 100 results.To date, the FastGradeTM 100 primary use has been as a verification tool (JORC, 2012). However, beyond this, it has considerable potential to improve productivity in both exploration and production environments due to its ability to provide geologists with assay results soon after a hole is drilled.This paper presents initial test work and tool performance, including accuracy and precision under various conditions. Raw materials account for over 60 per cent of the cost of hot metal production in classical blast furnaces and the principal cost component is cost of coke. Dependence on coke is a traditional weakness of blast furnace ironmaking and while efforts have been made to evolve alternative ironmaking technologies which do not use coke, such as direct reduction, smelting reduction, and the more recent method of making iron carbide, blast furnaces continue to be the most efficient means of producing bulk hot metal even today. Coal injection, to the extent of 150 - 200 kg/t of hot metal, has been one of the major innovations made in blast furnaces to decrease cost and to reduce the dependence on coke. This has, however, given rise to more stringent coke property requirements (which often means more expensive coke) - a `tail spin' of Sorts!

Systems such as Davey Bickford’s Daveytronic® SP blast initiation system and electronic detonators have been an integral part of drill and blast activities in Australia for over a decade, with the significant benefits of electronic blasting well documented. Since 2010 the Multiblast feature has been commercially available, which enables eight individual blast patterns (up to 1500 detonators each) to be blasted in the same firing window. Synchroblast has been in active operation since 2012, which allows a blast of up to 4500 detonators – either as a single blast pattern, or several smaller adjacent blast patterns – to be reliably initiated.Multiblast manages blasts separately but concurrently, allowing all blasts to conduct prefiring checks simultaneously from the firing point utilising only one remote blasting unit. Each blast can be selected and fired individually, in a sequence determined by the operator by scrolling through the colour display. Synchroblast automatically detects the blasting configuration, and manages all detonators as a single blast pattern. This simplifies the design and blasting processes for the mining operation.Multiblast and Synchroblast are routinely employed throughout Australia and globally in both open cut and underground operations, enabling optimal productivity due to increased blast volume and reduced operational downtime associated with blasting events.A number of case studies will be presented in this paper, detailing various mining operations that are consistently blasting in excess of 2500 detonators per blasting event as a part of standard drill and blast operations. THE object that the writer has mainly in view in presenting this paper is to draw the attention of those connected with the technical side of the industry to the unsatisfactory and by no means up-to-date methods employed in estimating the tin contents of an ore. At the same time, what is regarded, from the writer's personal experience, as a satisfactory and reliable method is explained in detail. It is a curious fact that for the last 25 years tin·assay methods have made little or no advance, while those now in general use ill connection with copper and lead ores can scarcely be compared with those then obtaining, so greatly have they been improved upon. Though it. is not altogether expected that the method herein advocated will at once meet with general approval, the writer hopes the resultant discussion may bring out points that have hitherto escaped detection.FIRE METHODSThe old Cornish method of smelting with anthracite is now obsolete. The cyanide assay, although unreliable, is still much used because of its simplicity. In the Malaya many buyers of tin ores use the cyanide assay, the smelting being carried out generally in a benzine furnace. Coal mining has an impact on the water management of the water scarce Upper Olifants River Catchment. A prefeasibility study was carried out by Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited to establish the water supply and demand in the catchment. A geohydrological model was used for the coalfields to determine the stored water and excess water available. Two distinct collective and treatment systems were proposed for the Witbank and Middelburg municipalities to treat excess water from the Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited. The Emalahleni Water Reclamation Project for Witbank was initiated first. Water management and treatment experience gained at Anglo Coal was the cornerstone to develop the collection, treatment and distribution system. A full enquiry was issued to Keyplan, Veolia, Bateman Africa and IST Technik to construct, commission, operate and maintain a 20 ML/day desalination plant to treat acidic, saline mine waters to a South African National Standard (SANS) 0241 Class 0 potable water. After the technical and financial adjudication, Keyplan were awarded the contract. An integrated regulatory process was adopted through consultation with all the relevant regional and head office staff of the Department of Minerals and Energy, Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the Mpumalanga Department of Land Affairs via an authorityÆs steering committee. A rock engineering evaluation was done to select both the plant and waste disposal sites as all possible sites are undermined. Various contracts are required with the individual mines for water supply, the Emalahleni Local Municipality for the delivery of potable water and for the disposal of wastes.

Iron Road Limited is currently studying the feasibility of producing 20 Mt/a of high-grade (67 per cent Fe) magnetite concentrate from a 2.6 Bt resource (JORC) located at Warramboo on the central Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. Bulk concentrate has been tested at a relatively coarse grind size of -106 ¦m. The preliminary flow sheet has been confirmed based on initial mine plans and comprehensive metallurgical testing across the range of mineralisation. Extensive Davis tube testing to predict magnetite recoveries has been conducted over the resource, however this was completed at settings different to the optimised settings developed in the metallurgical test work program.This paper outlines the development of an ore treatment simulation in SysCAD which utilises the mine production plan, the Davis tube test data from the resource, data from metallurgical test work and process design criteria to predict magnetite concentrate deliveries. Mineralogical data, including QEMScan results and metallurgical assessments, were a fundamental basis of the process models which enable predictions of concentrate yield and quality. Power and water requirements are also calculated within the model. SysCAD dynamic simulation has been used to assist with the design of the process plant and downstream infrastructure. The dissolution of the naturally occurring mineral zircon (ZrSiO4) is examined after ball milling it with magnesium oxide for up to 100 hours in a laboratory mill. There was little effect on the solubility for the initial two hours where size reduction of the zircon was considered to be the dominant effect. Beyond two hours the dissolution increased as a function of the square root of milling time. X-ray diffraction of the powders did not reveal the identity of the soluble phase. However, a nanocrystalline phase was present after milling and this is thought to be the soluble phase.

Based upon the previous work of Norman & Loeb, a method was used to assess the comparative wearing properties of ten different alloys being used, or being considered for use, as mill liners and grinding media at Mount Isa, The materials to be tested were obtained in the form of large diameter balls, and were run, along with the regular ball charge, in a large ball mill operating under normal grinding conditions. At selected intervals, the test balls were removed from the mill, weighed and identified, and their relative wear rates determined.INTRODUCTIONInformation in metallurgical journals, from local iron and steel foundries, and from various metal promotional organizations has suggested that the various alloy compositions available should be examined and assessed for possible use as milllfners and grinding media.Previous attempts at evaluation of recommended materials for these applications elsewhere, have usually involved the purchase of large quantities of grinding balls or complete mill liner sets, requiring running periods of up to two years or more. As well as being both a costly and lengthy procedure, the information obtained may be of little significance, due to changes in milling practice, and ore characteristics during the period of operation.To overcome these difficuities, a method was adopted based on the short time wear rate test recommended by Norman & Loeb (1949) and Norman (1957) in which all the materialsunder consideration are ·subjected·concurrently to the conditions of service.Previous calculations of wear rates have been dependent1. There are numerous causes of speculative mineral resource and reserve inflation. Traditionally, these are linked to issues of data accuracy or misinterpretation, the use of overly optimistic estimation parameters or assumptions, an absence of independent expert verification, or the simple pressure to increase company value, covert or otherwise. Owing to its subjective nature, classification of resources and reserves remains an opaque process. Of necessity, Competent Persons rely on personal heuristic interpretations, ideally underpinned by appropriate estimation and classification experience across commodity and deposit types. Whereas independent verification of individual resource and reserve statements remains impractical, publicly available data can be interrogated for potential category inflation, particularly when viewed with exploration expenditure statistics included in annual company reports. Abrupt changes in category tonnages and market capitalisation without concomitant expenditure can aid in outlier detection. Consequently, a comparison of common exploration and resource reporting parameters offers a basis for risk assessing classification robustness, over time. In this introductory study, an analysis of globally listed companies was undertaken over a multi-year period, examining base and precious metal projects in both preproduction and operational asset classes. From these, a series of exploratory decision tree trigger points were generated against which target companies were anonymously identified and risk-ranked.

 The Southern Alps is an active oblique collisional zone which has a characteristic wedge-shaped geometry above a low-angle ductile shear zone. The Main Divide region is a relatively low strain zone above this ductile shear zone, and is _deforming principally along steeply dipping strike-slip faults. Extensional fractures are common at a high angle to the regional structural trend. These steeply dipping structures act as conduits for gold-bearing fluids from depth, and small mesothermal gold deposits have formed at several structural levels including the near-surface region. Gold has also been deposited in a meteoricmetamorphic fluid mixing zone near a conductive thermal anomaly on the western slopes of the mountains. These various gold deposits and their well-constrained structural and tectonic settings can be used as analogues for larger, deeper-eroded mesothermal gold deposits in the Mesozoic Otago Schist belt. High level Miocene veins in NW Otago have formed beneath the main divide of the initiating Southern Alps. Late metamorphic gold-bearing veins formed as fluid escaped from the ductile-deforming crustal root beneath Mesozoic mountains.
