Magnetic separator operation in the recovery of magnetite in heavy medium circuits was studied by conducting a series of tests on a full size wet drum magnetic separator.The significant operational variables were found to be feed pan clearance, squeeze pan clearance, dry magnetite feed rate and separator drum speed. With feed and squeeze pan clearances optimized for typical primary separator operation, magnetite loss and concentrate specific gravity were found to be related in a regular manner to dry magnetite feed rate at any drum speed.A two component model of magnetite loss is proposed, relating total magnetite loss to losses in the feed pan and squeeze pan zones. The experimental curves relating magnetite loss to dry magnetite feed rate at the various drum speeds are interpreted in terms of the two component model.The magnetite particle size distribution in the separator was also examined. The tailings magnetite was found to be finer than the feed magnetite only when the dry magnetite feed rate was low, or immediately following the introduction of a new charge of magnetite when the separator was fed at an intermediate dry magnetite feed rate.

Usually when a geologist or metallurgist obtains "incorrect" gold assays the problem can be traced to poor communication between the geologist or metallurgist and the assayer.

In today’s underground mass mining, the orepass is an important part of the infrastructure as it connects two or more mine levels and is used for conveying or storing large amounts of material. One of the main risks related to an orepass is when operational or structural failure occurs, leading to long-term loss of functionality. Developing or rehabilitating an orepass when major failure has occurred is a time-consuming and expensive operation, and the risk of a long-term orepass loss motivates the development of alternative transportation strategies to ensure the continuation of smooth operations in large underground systems. The study presented in this paper has been done at the Loussavaara Kiirunavaara AB Malmberget mine in Sweden, where iron ore deposits are being extracted using sublevel caving. THE question of dealing with the small quantities of copper found in a great many of the purchased ores became a factor of importance when the Sulphide Corporation decided to refine its own lead bullion, as the presence of this impurity has a marked effect on the efficiency of the de-silverizing operations of the Parkes process. Removal of the copper from the base bullion.The copper is removed from the base bullion by drossing, which collects the copper, and at the same time has considerable gold, silver, and lead values. The drassing of the bullion is done in two stages-firstly, at the smelters; and secondly, in thecopper kettles at the refinery. In both cases a "wet" dross is produced, which is subsequently "sweated" in a suitable type of furnace. When "dry" the dross is raked out and stored until enough accumulates to warrant a nUl on dross in the small blastfurnace kept for that purpose. A typical assay of the "dry" dross is as follows...WORKING THE DROSS UP TO LOW-GRADE CU-PB MATTEThe accumulated dross is treated in a small blast furnace with the necessary fiuxes, producing a low-grade Cu-Pb matte and base lead bullion.

The present work proposes a distributed collaborative immersive virtual reality framework for prospective applications in the mining industry. A human-centered approach is described, with people being placed in the central position and surrounded by tasks that are to be carried out. Those tasks can be then achieved through synchronous or asynchronous communication, interactions using properly constructed user interfaces, virtual and/or augmented realities and computer vision. Several examples of such arrangements are presented. One of the applications facilitates an e-learning experience by providing a very familiar object – a book – as a target for users to interact with. Importantly, this system has the potential to provide an ‘enhanced’ teaching medium, as humans tend to remember events/situations better when they experience those events in person, when the immersive factor is involved. The immersive virtual reality environment enables a user to interact physically with various 3D objects and experience behaviours, which in turn reinforces the idea that doing leads to learning. This prototype system can be implemented as an efficient and cost effective e-learning and training platform for different engineering domains. At another level, the same technology can be used in the tele-operation of mining equipment for the future mine.

The zinc-lead-silver mineral resource at Lady Loretta ranks amongst the worldÆs richest when measured in terms of in situ metal grades. However, the project remains undeveloped 28 years after its discovery in 1969. The primary obstacle to development has been the fine and complex grain structure of its ores, which make flotation concentration inefficient even with fine grinding. The size and remote location of the deposit have also hindered exploitation. BUKA planned to directly fume the volatile target metals from the ore when it acquired the project. Intensive, post-acquisition modeling showed the innovative processing route to be uneconomic, notwithstanding high metals recovery and low waste content in fume product. Progressive modifications and supplements to the underlying fuming process enhanced economics and resulted in a new mine-to-metal processing route for zinc-lead-silver ores. The proprietary, three-stage BUKA Zinc Process offers technical, economic and environmental advantages. It is expected to find widespread application in the treatment of ores and residues. However, neither continued R&D nor application to Lady LorettaÆs currently delineated resource can be justified under prevailing market conditions. The objectives and results of each step in the process development sequence are outlined with reference to their impact on the commercial viability of the Lady Loretta project.

Outbursts have occurred irregularly in the Collinsville Coal field since 1954 when an incident claimed seven lives. Further significant outbursts occurred in 1960, 1961, 1972 and more recently in the No. 2 mine in 1978. From the information collected over 25 years a comprehensive program to minimize the hazard of outbursts has evolved. Further developments of techniques to combat outbursts are being developed.

The optimisation of an open pit mine can be broadly split into two stages, the first being the ultimate pit optimisation (and subsequent stage designs), and the second being schedule optimisation. Macroeconomic uncertainty clearly impacts on both however interrelationships do also exist. Generally, the opportunity exists for the ultimate pit to be revised during each planning cycle, however when this reprieve is removed the uncertainty for the underlying business increases. As one example, the introduction of an in-pit waste dump can be seen to significantly limit the option to revise the ultimate pit. When in this situation there are two potential risks that present: (i) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is optimistic, and too large of a pit is selected resulting in waste being mined which uncovers material not of a significant value to deliver a profit; (ii) the long-term price used for the ultimate pit selection is pessimistic, too small of an ultimate pit is selected, and ore of realisable economic value left behind. Numerous studies have explored refractory corrosion in the presence of slag and/or metal, utilising the Finger Rotating Test (FRT). Recent experimental results revealed that corrosion initially increased with rising rotation velocity but was then suppressed above a critical rotating speed, under conditions involving a two-liquid solution of slag and molten steel. This phenomenon indicated that the liquid/liquid interface movement occurred during spindle rotor. However, understanding of the phenomenon, known as the rod climbing effect, remains inadequate in the case involving slag, molten steel and refractories. To gain deeper insights, a simulation experiment was conducted on the phenomenon using silicon oil/water and the phenomenon was analysed using computerised simulation software (Ansys Fluent). Experimental modelling demonstrated that interfacial movement occurs even at low rotation velocity, as low as 200 rev/min, when the viscosity of silicone oil is at 100 cP. Computational analysis utilising the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method and a realisable k-ε turbulence model elucidated that interface elevation during rotor rotation arises due to viscosity disparities between the two fluids. Furthermore, this movement is more pronounced when the viscosity difference is lower. Additionally, the study findings suggest that higher density differences between two liquids suppress the phenomenon of interface movement.

Blasthole cone samples are used for grade control in most of the iron ore mines of the Pilbara of Western Australia. This method of sampling is straightforward when the target sampling interval matches the mining bench height but is problematic when the blasted bench is 'flitch' mined in two or more passes. Crucially, the sampler needs to decide which part of the blast cone represents the upper and lower flitches to be mined. This sampling selection decision is usually made by assuming a certain proportion represents the subdrill component of a sampling face in a blasthole cone and the two flitches are split equally from the remaining portion. In this study of a West Australian channel iron deposit, sampling experiments were carried out to determine the actual proportions of a sampling face in a blasthole cone by spray painting the blast cones at flitch and subdrill boundaries during the drilling process. Measurements were then taken to assess the differences between assumed sampling face proportions and actual proportions. A set of paired samples was also collected from a number of blastholes with one set using the assumed proportions of each flitch for each sample, while the other set sampled the actual proportions, which were identified from the cone painting process.

The subject of the present paper will be combustion of fuel and as the combustion of fuel requires a certain amouut of air to effect combustion the question might be asked what is air?Air is composed, we will say, principally of two gases, oxygen and, nitrogen, but our business is with the former gas, and its leading feature as a supporter' of combustion. In point of fact no fire will burn without its presence, nor can animal life be sustained when this gas ls absent, because it is the life-sustaining element. For example, if we take a piece of charcoal, which is pure carbon, and burn it in the open air combustion takes place in the union of the carbon of the charcoal with the oxygen of the air, forming the compound known as carbonic acid (0.0.)The rust we see on iron and other metals is a kind of slow combustion, which is termed oxydation. When oxygen unites with any other element heat is given off in the process, and it may be here stated that the most intense heat is produced, by burning the two gases-oxygen and hydrogen in precisely the same proportions as that forming water.

Geosynclines have been well studied for many years, but very little has been written about the concepts of sedimentary basins in spite of the vast amount of data available. They have been regarded, perhaps, as well- understood intuitively, and therefore not worthy of study. Many of the fundamental concepts of geology were developed during the 19th Century with the construction of coal mines, canals and railways. It was a happy chance that led railway engineers in the early days to think that trains could not climb any but the smallest gradient, so, in Britain at -least, numerous railway cuttings and tunnels were made. These exposed to view and study, in a better form than Nature usually provides, a great deal of interesting geology. Because of the lack of literature about the concepts of sedimentary basins, it is not possible to be sure what the early geologists thought. It seems that sedimentary basins were regarded as recording a history of subsidence during the early stages, when a transgressive sequence accumulated; and a history of uplift during the later stages, when a regressive sequence accumulated. It seemed axiomatic that the age of folding and faulting was younger than the rocks folded or Faulted.

Cyanidation tests by bottle agitation were conducted on an oxidized lead-silver ore containing approximately 12% Pb and 500 g/t Ag. Over 60% of the silver was leached when the ore was ground to 100% passing 0.15mm, whereas 50-60% of the silver was leached when the ore was only ground to 100% passing 0.5mm. Slurry handling and dewatering at the fine grind size were very difficult due to the high clay content of the ore, however this problem was greatly reduced at the coar- ser grind size. The silver recovery at the fine grind size was very dependent on cyanide solution strength with stronger cyanide sol- utions (containing more than 0.1% NaCN) re- sulting in lower solution silver contents. This was thought to be due to the precipi- tation of leached silver by zinc, which was also leached from the ore by the higher cyanide levels. There was a critical zinc level in solution of approximately 1000ppm, above which the silver recovery fell markedly. Cyanide and lime consumptions for this ore were high (typically 5 kg/t and 40 kg/t respectively), hence the processing of this particular ore by cyanide leaching is un- economic at current silver prices.

Maximising shareholder value is a widely stated strategic goal of many mining companies. Mining projects can be capital intensive and achieving good returns is essential to encourage future investment in the industry. Despite the widely accepted importance of shareholder value, the minerals industry is often accused of providing relatively poor returns when compared to other industries. There are many recent and well publicised examples of minerals companies that have failed to deliver value to their shareholders. There are numerous business improvement initiatives employed within the mining industry to assist mine operators improve performance. Some are more effective at creating value than others. Benchmarking is one technique that is commonly used to identify performance gaps and target and prioritise opportunities for improvement. However to be effective, Benchmarking must be used appropriately and result in actions that lead to measurable operational improvement. When conducting a Benchmarking project it is important to remember that the aim should be to improve value. For this to be achieved, the strategic goals must be incorporated into the process. This paper details a structured and comprehensive approach to conducting a successful Benchmarking project. Focusing on Benchmarking as a technique for measuring and improving operational performance in underground mines, the underlying drivers of best practice in underground mining are identified.

When a joint venture is established between a major and a minor, the co-venturers often have a number of divergent interests; the major may have put up significantly more capital into the project and will want to protect its investement; the major may have more financial resources and be more readily to commit capital to the project; the major may have more technical resources and expertise to provide to the project; the major may have other competing demands for its capital; the minor may be relying on rapid development of the project as its sole source of cash flow. Successful joint ventures arise when the co-venturers understand each others' interests and attempt to satisfy these interests. This could be achived by having a clear process and timetable for development of the project coupled with clear rules for distribution of income, the commitment of capital to the project and the provision of inter-company services. If divergent interests are either regulated clearly or eliminated, both co-venturers are more likely to seek common objectives in the joint venture with less scope for conflict. This paper, written from the perspective of a major, examines means of establishing successful joint ventures between majors and minors.
