The main task of grade control on a daily basis is to define the material that should be mined to a destination under various categories. This can be determined by grade, lithology, quality and blending criteria. In the case of multi-element deposits or deposits with various blending or other processing criteria the optimum selection of ore block boundaries can be quite complex. In every case the balance between ore loss and dilution must be considered when designing the ore block boundaries and this becomes a risk-based decision when using the conditional simulation model. The use of such systems allows grade control to meet specific targets, such as budget tonnages and grades and blended product specifications. Two case studies are presented: the Prominent Hill copper/gold mine and the Rapu Rapu zinc/copper mine. Mining is based on a rational grade control strategy involving a number of factors, including strong geological control, advanced geostatistical approaches, such as conditional simulation, and optimisation of the ore blocking to meet production requirements. This provides an objective, transparent and repeatable grade control strategy.

Chalcopyrite samples from two different localities were leached in oxygenated mixed chloride-sulphate lixivants at elevated temperatures and atmospheric pressure. The oxidation of chalcopyrite was found to follow predominantly linear kinetics. The slope of the major region was dependent on stirring rate, oxygen flowrate and chloride concentration while only slightly dependent on the surface area of the sample leached. This region was found to predominate only at low temperatures. The oxidised chalcopyrite releases cuprous and ferric ions into solutions. Chloride ions complex these dissolved ions to effectively move the equilibrium of the leaching reaction to the right. When the level of chloride in solution was below 6 g/l, the unstable cuprous ions were found to reprecipitate with sulphur as covellite. When no chloride was present and the lixivant was a solution of sulphuric acid then ferric sulphates precipitated. The overall leaching reaction occurring in the leaching system is: CuFeS2 + 5H+ + 1.25 02 = Cu 2+ + Fe 3+ + 2S¦ + 2.5H20

Man has always been and will always be part of his environment, in ,a good, bad or indifferent manner. Until quite recently, this environment has been the atmospheric boundary layer above the land masses, and to a limited extent the air-sea interface of the oceans. Since the days when he lived in caves, he has built up a wealth of observations on these two environments,-with ever-increasing scientific precision which unfortunately until quite recently was completely insufficient for modern capabilities of data analysis. Consequently, in a sense, he has left in his wake thousands of years of missed, opportunities for making exact observations and increasing his understanding. The data of the past are lost and he has to be satisfied with what he can assemble from now on when his environ- ment, largely as a result of his actions, is exhibiting more and more rapid variations in time; in other words, time series of observations of phenomena are required, the length of which is critical for most purposes of analysis.

Many metallurgical beneficiation and primary concentrating processes rely upon discrimination of products from gangue based on particulate density of the different minerals and combinations of minerals in an ore. The basic definition of density is simple, but the apparent density that minerals exhibit when in the environment of commercial densimetric separation processes is more complex and is ill-defined. Measurement of the apparent density displayed by minerals in their separation situation is essential if modelling of plant performance is to be meaningful or when comparison of an existing operation with a æperfectÆ separation constitutes a part of an audit or of a plant control function. Seven methods of dividing ore samples into discreet density fractions are examined and criticised in this paper. The shortcomings, difficulties and potential errors arising from the use of each method are evaluated. Most of the techniques described have been used by the author and generally their faults are understood and the resultant first-hand experience has been used to overcome these faults. A simple new computer-assisted technique for developing meaningful densimetric data is described.

When driving mine roadways in the vicinity of tectonic disturbances and fault zones, sudden outbursts of gas, along with ejections of fine coal, occur. Substantial dynamic changes occur around the roadways in the coal and around the support. The problem has several aspects. Studies have been carried out on the technical analyses of the phenomena which occurred in the Velenje Lignite Mine from 1957 to 1988. The second part of the investigation involves systematic laboratory studies of strength and deformability characteristics of lignite samples and "in-situ" measurements of stress changes during the driving of some roadways. Analyses of events (using the model of limit convergence and the finite element method) showed the possibility of gas outbursts, taking into account the deformability conditions when crossing over from compact lignite to the disturbed region. The rate of advance of roadways and the method of support strongly influence the occurrence of the phenomenon. The preventative measures used in driving roadways under such conditions include trial drilling and the use of blasting instead of machine cutting.

Nine case studies are presented to illustrate how risks can be, minimised or quantified during pit optimisation, utilising Whittle Four-D software. Each case study covers a specific problem that has been encountered from a wide variety of pit optimisations. Case A: Maximising profits when the tenement owner is paid a royalty on tonnes processed. Case B: Allocating product prices, rather than a single commodity price during optimisation. Case C: Quantifying processing costs that are affected by penalty elements in the ore. Case D: Exploration expenditures below current pits can be quantified through the use of simulation techniques. Case E: Alternative strategies can be quantified when pits are restricted by tenement boundaries. Case F: Relocation of mine infrastructure that requires large capital expenditures, can be simulated by allocating costs to an area during optimisation. Case G: Evaluating alternative corporate strategies during pit optimisation. Case H: Sensitivity analysis for price, processing cost and mining cost. Case I: Quantifying the advantages of using additional mining capacity during the early periods of mining.

Pyrrhotite crystallises as either a hexagonal or monoclinic structure, both of which can occur in ore deposits. In general, pyrrhotite is not considered as a valuable mineral unless it contains considerable amounts of other metals like nickel or copper. In fact it causes numerous problems in flotation including intensive oxygen consumption, which results in poor selectivity among sulphide minerals in the processing of complex sulphide ores. Also, because of its high sulphur content, pyrrhotite is a major contributor to environmentally detrimental sulphur dioxide (SO2) emissions from smelters. Pyrrhotite also interacts galvanically with grinding media via electrolyte species present in the flotation pulp, resulting in media corrosion. The most effective way to reject pyrrhotite is through a separation stage, which may be difficult when both types of pyrrhotite are present in the ore. In this regard depression of pyrrhotite through a flotation stage may be applied. Pyrrhotite depression by either intensive oxidation or by using sodium cyanide has been practiced. Results present in this work show that NaCN can depress pyrrhotite effectively when combined with an alkaline environment and low collector concentrations.

An airlift pump is fitted to the screw conveyor of a decanter type centrifuge in order to pump out soft cakes which are difficult to discharge from a standard decanter. The new patented2 design improves separation performance and allows more stable operation, particularly when operating the decanter as a thickener.

The discovery of the Cuffley Lode at Mandalay Resources Costerfield Operations provided an opportunity to extend mine life via mining the offset depth extension of the previously worked Alison Mine. Access from the existing Augusta Mine placed the initial Cuffley underground workings at approximately 250 metres depth from surface. As the new orebody transitioned towards production, a secondary means of egress needed to be established. The depth of the initial capital development presented a challenge in establishing a secondary means of egress that could be confidently relied on. The availability of land to locate a surface shaft collar further reduced available options and geotechnical drilling further limited suitable shaft locations. Time limiting factors such as permitting and having a secondary means of egress in as soon as possible, further highlighted that an innovative secondary means of egress was needed. A consideration of using an emergency gig lowered by a suitable sized crane supplied by an external crane contractor was investigated and found to be a suitable outcome. This Emergency Gig was deployed via the Cuffley Return Air Raise. When trialled, the emergency gig was found to provide a reliable, repeatable extraction method with an acceptable level of risk. Issues discovered during such trials further improved the process to a point where this extraction method became the adopted secondary means of egress for additional lodes that existed at depth. When assessing possible methods of secondary means of egress, the use of a third-party crane and custom designed and fabricated emergency gig should not be discounted. Where a crane can be sourced within an acceptable timeframe, the emergency gig extraction method provides a reliable safe and cost-effective means of secondary means of egress, especially when multiple shafts are to be developed. Local laws may negate the ability to employ such a system, although it is believed with good communication and well-constructed risk assessments, this system can be safely deployed.

As a result of the explosion in the 512 panel at the Moura No 2 mine in 1994 the role of the ventilation officer (VO) to submit sealing plans (on behalf of the operator/underground mine manager) has become one of the key duties of the VO of an underground coal mine in Australia. The intent of a sealing plan is to document the controls used to manage the build up of flammable concentrations of gases, and for these controls to be reviewed by the industry regulators. These sealing plans have brought a large amount of focus onto the sealing process and served the industry well. The legislation does not define sealing, or when it begins, but throughout the industry typically sealing plans are submitted 30 days prior to the last seal being constructed. This practice appears to have originated from the Moura 512 panel being a standing bord and pillar panel and where the explosive gas mixture could only occur after it was sealed. However, since the Moura disaster the industry has become dominated by goafing style longwall mining. Goafing panels differ from standing bord and pillar panels in that they typically have an unventilated goaf that can potentially contain an explosive mixture from start-up. This was recently highlighted by the explosion and fire on Longwall No 1 Tailgate at the Blakefield South Mine in 2011. The author ponders whether the industry should revisit sealing plans to focus on the core hazard and define that sealing begins when flammable concentrations of gases are created. Although defining when mine sealing begins is the key outcome of this paper, the main point is that VOs and industry regulators need to clearly understand what can occur in the atmosphere of underground coal mines. One of the primary objectives when optimising a mining complex is to maximise its value for the primary stakeholders. In order to achieve this objective, it is necessary to holistically optimise all aspects of the mining complex, including decisions of when to extract materials from the available sources, how to blend or stockpile these materials and how to best use the available processing streams to satisfy customer demand. Existing methods for global, or holistic, optimisation ignore the compounded effects that risk has on the performance of a mining complex. Over the past decade, several stochastic optimisation approaches have been proposed to integrate various forms of uncertainty into the open pit mine design and production scheduling. These methods, however, are limited in their ability to simultaneously optimise the production schedules for the portfolio of mines, material destination policies, the use of the available processing streams and the various products that are produced at each location of the mining complex.This paper aims to discuss a new method for the global optimisation of open pit mining complexes with geological uncertainty. The proposed generalised methodology is capable of modelling and holistically optimising mining complexes, including aspects related to production scheduling, blending, stockpiling and non-linear interactions that often occur in practice, but are over-simplified in existing models. Two case studies are discussed to highlight the need for these complex, stochastic optimisers. First, a case study for a nickel laterite blending operation highlights the need to integrate geological uncertainty into the optimisation in order to ensure product quality constraints are respected. Having worked as a consultant for most of his 40-year working life, mostly as a mineral property valuer, the author has seen many poor valuations. Most were valuations of exploration tenements where the selection of the rather subjective, but necessary, geological inputs raised the main concerns. Those valuations involving iron ore prospects raise particular problems due to the special characteristics of such deposits. Iron ore is more like an industrial mineral rather than precious or base metals and Reserves are determined not by a traditional cut-off grade but by customer specifications. This is intended to be an overview/keynote paper on the current state of the growing (yet consolidating) Australian Iron Ore industry. It has now moved beyond Western AustraliaÆs æPilbara Big TwoÆ of Rio/BHPB (with the emergence of the irrepressible FMG and Hancock Prospecting) to include the YilgarnÆs æMidwest ManyÆ (including US re-entrant Cleveland Cliffs through Portman) and projects in other States. Ore types have moved from haematite Brockman to martite-goethite Marra Mamba (including the RobeÆs mesas and below water table Yandicoogina CIDs) and magnetite ore types. There are DSOs and secondary process feed. Mineral valuers have to reflect today upon these and many other determinants of value when choosing the most appropriate methodologies to adopt when technically assessing and valuing exploration tenements containing iron ore. Set against a frame work of the JORC Code (2004) and VALMIN Code (2005), the general valuation issues involved in using the cost methods (eg multiple of exploration expenditure), market methods (eg comparable sales, rules-of-thumb and joint venture terms) and income methods (eg synthetic discounted cash flow (DCF)/net present value (NPV) modelling) are discussed. Relevant factors when valuing iron ore properties are discussed, eg ore type, lump/fines ratio, stripping ratio, water table, impurities and grade, particularly the JORC confidence category of the identified mineralisation. Remoteness and access to existing rail infrastructure is a key consideration.

Over the past 18 months the De Beers Consolidated Mines Ltd operations have made a concerted effort to move away from using the traditional shock tube initiating systems. These systems are being systematically replaced by the use of electronic delay detonators (EDD). Various trials were conducted in both host rock and kimberlite rock masses to improve tunnel advance as well as to optimise delay timing during trough openings (Ngoma et al, 1999; Mohle, 1999; Baltus, 2000). The high cost of EDDÆs, when compared with traditional initiation systems, led to a number of detailed studies being conducted on the mines where EDDÆs were being used. These studies aimed to quantify the additional benefits when blasting with electronic detonators. The studies showed that the change was justified on the basis of increased quality control and reliability gained through the use of EDDÆs. However, these benefits attract other related benefits, like fragmentation control, and backbreak reductions. When compared to the shock tube initiating systems the increased development face advance and the reduction of oversize during production blasting using EDDs, compared favourably to the less costly systems. As blasting engineers gained experience and confidence in the use of the system bigger blasts were initiated in mass under-cut blasts and slot raise development, by using multiple hole firing and second delay periods between holes. In the open pit and sublevel open stope mining methods the control of the fragmentation distribution and the effect of the mass of explosive detonated during a blast is detrimental to the loading and hauling production rates and the stability of the rock mass behind the blast. With a stable rock mass the bench cutting can be executed to establish steeper overall slope angles leading to large cost savings due to a reduction in waste stripping. It is the purpose of this paper to indicate through quantification that the use of the EDDs as an initiating system improves all-round blasting performances and assists in meeting customer requirements. This is the time of year tor the presidential address, and with the present incumbent engaged in the coal mining industry, it will therefore come as no surprise to you that the theme of my address this evening is concerned with coal.There are other reasons for this apart from my contact with the coal industry. At present, coal is supplying considerable overseas revenue at a time when the remainder of the mining market is in a somewhat depressed state. That times will change goes without saying, if history is to be believed.However, so far so good for coal. My first reaction when The Institute indicated its wish that I be president for 1976 was to become deeply conscious of the honour bestowed on me.On consideration, I realized that very few past presidents have been intimately connected with the coal mining industry to the extent of indulging in it for lengthy periods as a full time occupation or, conversely, a part time interest for a long time. It also appears that not one had started their career in the industry. In my case, 'also, there were 8 very interesting years ,as a gold miner and metallurgist before commencing in coal.It therefore seemed appropriate to endeavour to discover ,why this should be so, as coal mining is now a very important part of a very important industry. What were the reasons why the industry took so long to emerge when there were ample reserves of easily accessible coal?Frankie and Johnnie in their bar room epic of the depression years concluded, and I paraphrase, that "their story held no moral, their story told no tale". If my story has such a message, it could perhapsbe construed as reinforcing the oft-repeated dictums, true or false, that "history repeats itself" or "man never learns".Coal mining is by far our oldest major Australian industry except for agriculture. Metso Minerals Process Technology Asia-Pacific (MMPT-AP) has been working with many mining companies worldwide performing æMine to MillÆ or Process Integration and Optimisation (PIO) studies. MMPT-AP has developed a proven methodology to improve the efficiency of the mine-mill interface and gain maximum benefit. The PIO methodology involves rock characterisation, mathematical modelling and simulation to generate a list of operational and control changes for both the mine and concentrator. Following the methodology, the list of recommendations is developed relatively easily; the more challenging part depends on the company. Success of a PIO project relies on the ability of an organisation to implement change û both operationally and culturally: the human element. When a PIO project is started, there is initial interest and commitment from the company. But how can this be maintained? How does an operation know if the benefit continues? MMPT-AP is now developing long-term relationships with clients to ensure that the increased production and improved efficiency continues. Direct and indirect measurements are used to determine the key factors involved and to understand the cause/effect relationships. Simulation tools also can be used to compare current with recommended practices û so when material properties vary over time, the benefits can still be quantified. PIO is about empowerment: by measuring and understanding what parameters affect concentrator performance, the site personnel now have the knowledge to make a difference. Rather than simply reporting variable or poor concentrator performance, operations can predict when production will be affected and put controls in place to prevent it from happening. This requires support and commitment from the company or æbuy inÆ. Ensuring this buy in continues is the challenge facing every company involved in PIO work û but the benefits are well worth it. This paper will review MMPT-APÆs experiences in implementing PIO projects in the long term: from both the consulting and operational viewpoints. MMPT-APÆs involvement with a number of companies will be discussed as examples of what works and what does not.

IN the determination of very small amounts of lead, the usual analytical methods are far from being satisfactory. Small amounts of lead may be present in the reagents empioyed, and it is customary to run a blank experiment to correct the error arising in this way. When the correction is of small magnitude compared with the amount of lead in the sample, this procedure may be adopted; but when very small amounts of lead are being determined it may happen that the lead found in the blank is as much, or even more, than the lead actually present in the sample, and the analysis has to be rejected. Moreover, the blank experiment cannot check errors which are not common to the blank and the analysis itself eg, the apparatus used in the parallel experiments, etc. It seemed to be desirable, tl;l.erefore, to make an investigation of the problem to ascertain, as far as possible, the nature of the errors arising from the introduction or loss of lead during the analysis, and how far these could be eliminated or corrected for; also, to determine the limits of accuracy of the improved method and the minimum amount of lead that could be reliably estimated.In the investigation, reliability and sensitiveness were regarded as essential features. Speed of operation, on the other hand, was considered of less importance. The amounts of lead dealt with being usually less than 1 mg, there is no alternative to the use of a colorimetric method. The latter, depending as it does upon the development of a brown coloration when ammonium sulphide is added to a very dilute -solution of a lead salt, is far from being a characteristic test for lead. Indeed, it is well known that the salts of most of the commonly occurring metals interfere with this test. Hence it is of vital importance that the lead should be isolated in the form of a pure compound possessing quite definite and characteristic properties before the colorimetric estimation is proceeded with...
