"Recent project failures have called into question the use and relevance of benchmarking and independent reviews, forcing a rethink of traditional processes and procedures.With cost estimates and schedules dramatically varying from lows seen around the global financial crisis to peaks experienced in the recent mining boom, benchmarking has ranged between essential and misleading.Profound shifts are now underway in future project delivery strategies as the market moves away from cost-plus engineering, procurement and construction management. The current trends in project implementation are to utilise more lump-sum design and construct or fixed-price supply and construct contracts. This trend will remove transparency in detailed cost information by reducing the sources and clarity of cost data.Independent peer reviews (IPRs) of studies and investment recommendations performed over the last decade have both failed to prevent flawed or deficient projects from proceeding to approval and funding, and been successful in ensuring that owners did not proceed with doomed investments.In recent times, it has been recognised by some owners, contractors and engineers that traditional benchmarking checks or IPRs, or a combination of both, will not necessarily produce reliable assessments of study conclusions and of the forecasts of project outcomes. To be of value, the benchmarking process now also needs to recognise the highly volatile responses from the engineering and construction industry to the current and future markets for their services.Similarly, reviewers who draw upon benchmarks of past project experiences on an understanding of the things that shaped and influenced their outcomes need to be more aware of how a future dynamic market may impact the outcome of the projects and raise warning flags accordingly.With the commodity cycle currently approaching what is hoped is its bottom, ensuring that benchmarking and independent reviews evolve into reliable, transparent and worthwhile processes becomes even more important. A very wide range of technologies are utilised in the mining and processing of ores and a great deal of effort is expended in the development of ænew technologiesÆ to improve mining performance and economics. Traditionally, technology and people have been treated as separate aspects of an operation, when in fact they are inextricably linked. The successful implementation of new technologies is entirely dependent upon the actions, enthusiasm and skills of people, both as individuals and working in groups. This paper discusses the role of technology in mining and how new technologies are implemented by the industry. The paper argues that existing technologies have not been fully or adequately utilised and that effort should be re-focussed on the implementation of technologies that have been taken for granted for many years. The need for greater emphasis to be placed on the management of the human-technology interface is discussed.

"The mandate of the 2005 VALMIN Code to provide ‘(all) reliable, thorough, understandable material information required by investors and their advisers when making investment decisions’ requires that due diligence for tenure be full and thorough. Yet a published due diligence would often appear to be simply a list of tenures allegedly held without any commitment as to the standing of the tenure as safe and secure or otherwise.The value of due diligence for tenure, as mandated in the 2012 JORC Code and the 2005 VALMIN Code, must focus on compliance rather than simply on ‘vital statistics’. Enforcement in every jurisdiction in Australia focuses on penalties (some more harsh than others) for non-compliance, which, in turn and most importantly, reflects directly on security of tenure. Some 22 Acts (on average) impinge on security of tenure and fundamentally underpin the security of any mineral asset.This paper will outline regulatory processes to demonstrate how tenure compliance is achieved and argue that the rigorous application of good practices in tenure evaluation will lead to more of this information being made available on a regular basis.The paper will then focus on further practical examples of tenure compliance failures, the application of these to the requirements of the JORC and VALMIN Codes and due diligence that failed to fulfil the mandate. Examples will be given that alerted other professionals using the JORC Code to complex geological and mining situations of which they were unaware in their valuations.Finally, the author will make a personal plea for tenure to be considered at the commencement of any reporting process.CITATION:Evans-Wheeler, J, 2016. The objectives of mining grade control are presented and examples of the techniques used in various open pit and underground mines are used to define the attributes of good grade control. Reasons are discussed for the success of various improved practices. The progressive development of grade control is presented and the balance between quantitative and qualitative data is analysed. The skills and resources required for grade control on mine sites that are using best practice are also presented. A number of problems in grade control have been solved recently however there are still issues that need to be addressed. Examination of the grade control process frequently stops after sample quality has been examined. There is much more beyond this that can now be optimised using conditional simulation models. Other future directions of mining grade control are also suggested. An extensive bibliography of published papers on grade control is included that will be maintained and updated on a website.

This paper presents the scientific framework underpinning the resource valuation and optimisation model (RVOM). The RVOM is a partial differential equation based real options software package, which helps mine owners optimally plan their operations, understand their project risks, and make defensible valuations. This is achieved in the presence of both financial and physical uncertainty, as well as processing capacity constraints. The RVOM can be applied to any multi-ore mine, open pit or otherwise, where the block-order of extraction has already been planned using existing software tools such as the Gemcom WhittleÖ strategic mine planning package. The RVOM can also take account of multiple commodities within a single mine, and multiple forms of price behaviour. The three key outputs from the RVOM are: valuation, optimal decision and probability of decision. A decision takes account of upfront costs, and can include an unlimited number of transitions between: normal operation, expanded operation, care and maintenance and abandonment (and variants thereof). The RVOM then employs stochastic process theory to determine the probability of reaching these decisions. This gives the mine operators clear indications as to where their risks lie, aiding their mine planning. A clear example of the RVOMs usage to a case-study gold mine is presented, demonstrating its broad applicability, the added value it can create and how users can easily make use of the RVOMÆs state-of-the-art algorithmic engine.

Societal expectations about how the industry operates and treats its people will be a key driver in the development of the Australian mining industry over the next 20 - 30 years (Moffat, Mason and Littleboy, 2009). Understanding these expectations will be critical in maintaining what much of the minerals industry calls its 'social licence to operate', or its public acceptance or approval. Yet what constitutes this social licence is poorly articulated, with little published research exploring the concept at a local operational level or at the national level in Australia or internationally. This research aimed to explore the societal expectations of the mining industry in Australia and test a participatory methodology to articulate them. Three workshops were conducted with a sample of 24 members of the 'Australian voting public' to explore community objectives for the onshore exploration and mining industry, and the underlying expectations for how the industry should operate in the future. Qualitative analysis of this data revealed three overarching objectives for the onshore mining industry held by participants. They thought that the industry should: advance Australia's national interests (including social well-being); minimise environmental impact, and; act in a socially responsible manner. Within each of these three key themes, or objectives, a number of tensions were evident in the views of participants regarding the trade-offs they are willing to make to secure economic benefit from mining, as well as the basic conditions for socially acceptable mining. These data provide an insight into the conditions for a national social licence in Australia for the mining industry, and the means for its realisation.

Belt conveyor transfers are the most likely location for high wear rates and failures. Belt transfers are necessary to change the direction of conveyed material and will remain a part of belt conveyor systems into the future. Burden being accelerated due to fall and changes in direction from one system to the next, prevents steady state flow which introduces component fatigue. The conveyor belt is considered the greatest cost item over the life of a belt conveyor system and consumes considerable downtime to replace, therefore a financial incentive exists to preserve this high-cost item. Other issues created at the transfer include health risks of uncontained dust and product losses due to spillage. Additional consideration to support the belt is one way to improve the life of components and contain dust within the transfer chute. The humble impact cradle/bed has changed little over the years whilst conveyor systems have achieved ever greater flow rates. Further development of the impact cradle is an opportunity to reduce maintenance costs and increase uptime. The peak technology on the market for conventional impact belt support is the dynamic impact cradle, which ensures the belt support area under the chute allows for some dynamic travel, whilst also maintaining a consistent skirt board area. The impact energy at a transfer when installed with Kinder Australia’s dynamic impact belt support system was measured to further understand the forces involved and how they compare with static belt support systems. Adding further dynamic capacity to the load zone has been shown to increase belt life by at least 30 per cent. Other components also benefit from reducing impact energy in the transfer and the incorporation of polyurethane bushes at roller supports has been employed further increase roller and frame life. Kinder Australia has developed a unique and innovative range of belt support technologies that further promote dynamic travel whilst maintaining a consistent skirt board area without a significant increase in belt-friction tension. This technology combines slider rails with rollers that can absorb impact independently within the support system and/or utilising exotic slider materials to overcome high belt speeds and/or system capacities. Kinder Australia has a vast library of documented case studies and application data to ensure the future systems being offered will survive, provide better chute sealing and protect the conveyor belt.

I once read an æarticleÆ in FHM Magazine entitled æThe Coolest Jobs There Ever WasÆ. It was about a group of guys who were pursuing careers that any person on the planet would just kill for. I distinctly remember drooling over the pages, thinking how much I would love to be Michael SchumacherÆs Chief Engineer at Ferrari, or the Principal Designer and Tester for one of the big Dutch rollercoaster companies. From that moment on, I decided that I wanted a career that was cool enough to make it into the pages of that article. Throughout my time at university, I always had that article in the back of my mind. As a result I constantly wondered about what sort of job I could end up with once I left university. More importantly, I wondered if FHM would be banging down my door to put me in the magazine! After a long and stressful job hunting process (in between completing a thesis and studying for exams) I finally managed to land myself a job with Orica Mining Services. I can honestly say I didnÆt know what to expect when I first joined Orica. Most of my friends ended up working for big mining companies, while I was offered a position with one of the biggest suppliers to these mining companies. However, I had a feeling when I was discussing the role with my future supervisor during the interview process that the job was going to be awesome. I have now spent a year working for Orica and I absolutely love it! While I feel that my job is worthy of being in that FHM article, unfortunately, I donÆt think I am going to get my opportunity to be in the magazine. Apparently I donÆt look too good in a bikini! However, I would love to have the opportunity to discuss the journey that I have taken so far û from my time as an environmental science graduate, then moving on to mining engineering, to now, being part of the Orica Mining Services Graduate Program. My suggestion is to use this paper as a resource. I have learnt during my time at university, as well as my time in the workforce, that the best people you can learn from are your peers. Take what you feel is relevant from the paper; hopefully it will help guide you in shaping your own career.

The grouping and segregation error is one of Gy’s seven errors that cannot be measured in any qualitative manner because of its transient and changing characteristics each time the sample is handled mechanically. Attempts to calculate the mean and variance of the segregation error is considered by some as ‘an exercise in futility’ that would not help us achieve representative sampling. This research is aimed at understanding the process of segregation of dense, finely divided and dilute particulate materials supported in a clean quartz substrate during intense agitation. Several mixtures of fine-grained materials including steel, tungsten carbide and gold grains were used in these experiments. Four hundred grains of each of the minerals and metals at a top size of 2 mm were mixed with approximately 600 g of finely ground quartz material (95 per cent passing 2000 microns) in a 500 ml plastic jar with a sealable lid. The mineral–?metal mixtures were analysed in three steps using microfocus X-ray computed tomography. Step one consisted of rolling the containers on a flat surface in an attempt to concentrate the mineral and metal grains in the core of the supporting substrate; this is a base case that can be reconstructed after each session of analysis. The second step involved gentle and vigorous shaking of the mixtures in order to segregate the denser minerals and metals from the supporting quartz substrate. In some cases, a third step involved splitting the sample through a riffle splitter. Three-?dimensional images of the surface of each grain, its volume and its X-, Y- and Z-coordinates, before and after intense agitation of the container, were interpreted from the reconstruction of the tomographic X-ray data. The spatial analysis of grains using cell declustering and 3D variography provided a useful means of characterising the distribution of the grains in space and the extent to which they had become segregated during the process of agitation. Spatial analysis indicates that in general, grouping and continuity of grains is weakly developed. The modelled nugget effect remains high for most tests, indicating that grains of similar size did not group together strongly. Agitation through rolling provided the best continuity, although not consistently in the long axis of the plastic jar. The nugget effect was consistently highest, and the range of continuity shortest in samples that had been split, indicating that the grouping and continuity were reduced through splitting the sample. Initial results indicate that very little segregation of the minerals and metals occurs in the quartz substrate. This is somewhat counter-intuitive, but suggests that the effects of agitation on mixtures of dense minerals and metals in substrates of lower density do not lead to excessive segregation. Differences in behaviour between dense materials in response to agitation are evident. Grains of different composition and shape did not group and segregate in a predictable manner in response to the agitation methods. "Conventional wisdom is that gold not assayable is not recoverable or does not exist. There has been no formal study on the possibility that gold assays using advanced spectroscopy such as mass spectrometry and neutron activation could grossly underestimate the gold recoverable by proprietary extraction techniques. Such gold is not considered here to be æinvisibleÆ to detection but rather æabnormalÆ or ædistortedÆ at atomic level. Large-scale extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores has not been demonstrated, hence this emerging field still lacks credibility and acceptance. For fear of harming their reputation, few academic researchers or companies are expected to venture into this field until it is well proven. This paper aims to create awareness amongst metallurgists of the potential of æabnormalÆ gold ores by reviewing unconventional observations, the pseudoscience mainly available in non-peer reviewed web sites, and hypotheses for the recovery of ænon-assayableÆ gold, including: the occurrence of high levels of nano-sized gold in clays detectable by high-precision analytical instruments, which represents æinvisibleÆ gold accounts of ambient transmutation of elements, mainly using thermal methods orbitally rearranged monoatomic elements (ORMEs), which are virtually undetectable by conventional means, and their conversion to normal metals the possibility of a æhigh spinÆ state of transition metals the formation of microclusters altering the chemical behaviour of gold and the possibility of clustering with other elements. It is suggested here that gold in ores displays a range of clustering, from ænormalÆ gold amenable to conventional extraction to the ORME state. The concepts of æintermolecular waterÆ in forming complex salts locking up precious metals, electro-dissolution in strong acids, and electrowinning at both the anode and cathode are discussed as a means of treating æabnormalÆ gold ores. It is also possible that the gas phase extraction of gold chlorides under controlled temperature and pressure conditions, as well as transferred-arc plasma fuming of gold through carbothermic reduction of sulfides, could be used as a basis for extraction of gold from æabnormalÆ ores.CITATION:van Deventer, J S J, 2013. Coal is a vital energy source and source of carbon for metallurgical applications, contributing significantly to the world economy. Coal mining and processing involve multiple processes that generate Respirable Coal Mine Dust (RCMD), one of the primary sources of health hazards for coal workers. Since 2000, the rate of Coal Workers’ Pneumoconiosis (CWP) has continually increased in the U.S, with severity of the cases also worsening. Increasing evidence shows that exposure to RCMD in coal workers is a high-risk factor for lung cancer, which causes more deaths than the following three major cancers combined in the US Recent observations show an increased incidenceof CWP or other lung diseases, particularly among young miners in the Appalachian basin. The CWP prevalence in Appalachia is four times higher than the national average. Although various regulations are in place, the resurgence of such disease among coalminers demands additional efforts to better understand all the possible facets of coal dust toxicity, taking insights from current interdisciplinaryresearch efforts. One such important field is the interaction of coal dust with moisture in underground mines. Although moisture is prevalent and dynamic in an underground mining environment, it has never been evaluated for its impact on modifying the toxicity of coal dust and transport or flow behaviour. However, research conducted in atmospheric sciences in the past decade makes it clear that moisture in the atmosphere can significantly alter the behaviour of mineral dust. This paper is a part of research aimed at understanding how moisture interacts and alters the characteristics of coal dust. Such insight is crucial in understanding the potential toxicity of coal dust and developing mitigation technologies.

The current genesis of pisolites and channel iron deposits (CID) has been defined in a way that presents CID as unique in the world. The published material on detrital pisolites mostly details the West Australian CID; most other global occurrences of iron-rich pisolites would seem to have an in situ genesis. An alternate theory for the origin of the Hamersley CID is suggested, involving an older greensand protore derived from volcanic ash and deposited on a glaciated Hamersley surface. This paper presents the author's observations, sampling and mapping after several years study and exploration for pisolites and CID in WA and in some locations overseas. It is not what one would call scientifically complete, and possibly asks more questions than it answers, but it is presented as a point for discussion.

The pervasiveness of poor sampling practices in and around mineral processing plants could seem intriguing in view of the various documented evidences both for causes and consequences. To this extent, this paper revisits the well-documented but lesser-known fact that failure to care sufficiently about how samples are selected and managed is the mother source of almost all sampling biases. The authors believe that the potentially huge leverage between causes and consequences as well as the diversity of people involved in sampling call for a globally integrated solution rather than for a point solution. Such a globally integrated solution has already been put forward by the AMIRA P754 Metal accounting – code of practice and guidelines (AMIRA, 2007) that inherently requires accuracy to be targeted, measured, reported and managed. Furthermore, always in order to avoid a point solution, several layers of protection against biases must be put in place with each one involving a different ownership whenever possible. This is exactly the role intended by the supervisory bias detection method described in this publication. It is based on the continuous monitoring of the expected value of reduced residuals obtained from statistical data reconciliation conducted in a metal accounting context. "The financial valuation of mining assets has a number of fundamental differences to the valuation of many other asset groupings. One such difference is that typically, the greater proportion of both the cost and revenue sides of the cash flow are inherently governed by systemic market forces.As a result, the range of outcomes for the valuation of each mining asset is more unpredictable, with higher levels of risk and uncertainty. In contrast, the management function of many other non-mining businesses or industry groups can control at least a portion of the cash flow by maintaining the margin or controlling the sales price. The management teams of mining businesses and operations typically have limited options, and are thus price-takers for both costs and revenues. As mining is an inherently cyclical industry, large, long-life operations can exist through several price cycles, making valuation both subjective and challenging.The outcomes of both static- and stochastic-based valuations, as well as the internal probabilities of the associated cash flow statements, are significantly impacted when the correlations between the appropriate parameters are quantified, modelled and incorporated into the valuation framework. The appropriate parameters for correlation modelling primarily include those that are governed by systemic market forces. Applying this process results in a different risk profile for the asset by allowing the risks resulting from systemic market movements to be more accurately quantified and then objectively minimised. When developing a new underground mine, the geological interpretation that guides the mineral resource is crucial to the preparation of a reliable ore reserve. In preparing a robust geological model to underpin a resource estimate, practitioners must weigh the comparative risk of accepting a relatively wide-spaced drill hole pattern, versus a more close-spaced pattern that ensures a high local geological confidence for mine planning but may have an exponentially increased time and monetary cost. This paper details the authors’ investigations into the geological uncertainty of IGO’s Odysseus Deposit, which is approximately 645 km north-east of Perth, Western Australia. At Odysseus, the komatiitic nickel sulfide mineralisation is irregularly cross-cut by nickel-barren pegmatites that have intruded and offset its thick ultramafic orebodies. These pegmatites generate significant uncertainty in the precision of Odysseus’ resource volume and tonnage estimates, as well as the subsequent quantification of pegmatite mining dilution in its ore reserve. To quantify the geological uncertainty in the pegmatite interpretations, IGO’s mineral resource practitioners prepared several geological risk studies over the Odysseus North lode, which is the lode most affected by the pegmatites. These studies included categorical conditional simulation of the pegmatites, preparing implicit geological models with alternative algorithms, trialling a machine learning application to prepare a maximum likelihood geological model, and finally assessing the early results of the pre-production close-spaced drilling to these different models. To assess the precision of the different single-outcome models, the authors’ compared the estimated pegmatite content of each model to the range of possibilities modelled by categorical conditional simulation within the planned stopes at Odysseus North. An estimation confidence score for each modelling method was then prepared for each alternative single-outcome modelling method. From these studies IGO concluded that a close-spaced drill pattern is essential at Odysseus, supporting the view of the Competent Person in 2017 who proposed a 25 m drill spacing in areas affected by pegmatite which had been partially classified as Inferred.

The philosophical context of many activities in mine geology can be an important lever in adding value to operations. For mine geologists (including resource and grade control geologists) we argue that the tasks of problem formulation, observation and data collection, interpretation and modelling invoke various philosophical considerations whether the practitioner is aware of them or not.Constructing testable models to explain reality is the definitive aspect of any activity claiming to be ‘scientific’. A primary goal of mining geology is to build models that accurately predict reality to an acceptable degree and these include litho-structural, stratigraphic, grade control, resource or reconciliation models. What’s more, in mine geology we are often able collect additional drill samples or access new underground openings, for example, that can provide relatively rapid feedback on how predictive, and therefore useful, our models are. In this paper, we describe the key philosophical frameworks proposed for conducting scientific investigations, including falsification, the method of multiple working hypotheses and structural concepts of scientific theory. The strengths and weaknesses of these approaches are discussed and an attempt is made to relate them to activities undertaken by mine geologists. Common perceptions of what constitutes the scientific method have been dominated by how scientists do experimental physics and chemistry in particular. There are very important differences in the types of problem confronted in these experimental sciences compared to the ‘historical sciences’, such as geology, where the processes studied are unique and only evidential traces of past events are available. The philosophical implications of attempting to validate numerical geological models, such as resource estimates are also briefly considered.Some practical conclusions are drawn about how mine geology activities can be better implemented if practitioners are cognisant of the importance of philosophical considerations when attempting to gain new knowledge through a scientific investigation. We believe that the implications for creating additional value to a project or operation can be very significant when geology is applied by a practitioner with an understanding of the philosophical basis of the activities we think of as constituting a scientific investigation.Remember that all models are wrong; the practical question is how wrong do they have to be to not be useful? (Box and Draper, 1987, 74 p).The demand that theories be highly falsifiable has the attractive consequence that theories should be clearly stated and precise. If a theory is so vaguely stated that it is not exactly clear what it is claiming, then when tested by observation or experiment it can always be interpreted so as to be consistent with the results of the test. (Chalmers, 1999, 67 p).

Work practices involved in shaft construction can be aligned with current industry standard operating practices. However, the working environment during conventional shaft construction introduces unique conditions which can not always be overcome by hard engineering controls. To provide an improved working environment, future shaft diameters will generally be greater than has historically been the case for the Australian hard rock mining industry. This paper aims to explore both what can be constructed from the contractors perspective, and how does an owner extract maximum business efficiency from an asset that in many ways is likely to be larger, more complex and more expensive than initially envisaged.Newcrest Mining Limited, or an associated company, has constructed two major shafts over the last seven years. In both cases, Byrnecut Mining, or an associated company, was the contractor engaged for the shaft sinking activity. The first is the 1127 m deep, 7.0 m diameter production and intake airway at the Telfer Gold Mine, the second is a 295 m deep, 5.5 m diameter split shaft at the Gosowong Gold Project in Indonesia that was primarily designed as both an intake and exhaust airway. Importantly both shafts are designed to provide emergency egress from the respective underground operations.From an Australian shaft sinking perspective, the construction of these two shafts resulted in the following learnings: •constructability is of equal importance to desired functionality;•allow six months of interactive design between the owner/engineer/contractor/regulator to get it right;•shaft sinking and equipping are intimately entwined, therefore engineering of both needs to be complete prior to any activity commencing; and•the mobilisation of both equipment and experienced personnel to a new shaft sink takes up to eight months.Shaft sinking is not extinct in the Australian hard rock mining industry. But, if you are considering constructing a shaft, approach it as a long life asset, front end planning to a high level of detail is required to unlock its full value. Think – plan – think and remember it’s going to take 12 months to get from the whiteboard to firing the first cut.

Hancock Prospecting Pty Ltd (HPPL) drilled two deep diamond stratigraphic holes (ECD0001 and RHD0296) within the eastern Fortescue Valley in the Pilbara of Western Australia. Located south of the Roy Hill Iron Ore project, the holes aimed to define the stratigraphy of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation (MMIF) of the Chichester Range and its south-dipping extensions below recent cover. Previous attempts to define the MMIF of the Chichester Range have resulted in differing interpretations due to the data available at the time.The unweathered MMIF beneath the Fortescue Valley in the HPPL drill holes is characterised by dolomitic carbonate interbedded with stilpnomelane-rich shales, chert and banded iron formation (BIF) with hematite staining. This intersection equates to ~75 m of carbonate-facies iron formation, as opposed to the ~230 m thick oxide-facies BIF and shale sequence encountered south of the Fortescue Valley.Various detailed geological core analyses and interpretations from ECD0001 and RHD0296 were integrated with regional diamond and reverse circulation (RC) holes from across the Fortescue Valley. Interpretation of the data indicates that the eastern Fortescue Valley MMIF represents a thinned thickness sequence of the whole formation. The MMIF of the Chichester Range and Fortescue Valley has gamma logs that correlate strongly in parts to the type section used for MMIF south of the Fortescue Valley. Therefore, the outcropping MMIF in the Chichester Range represents an eroded equivalent of the æreducedÆ thickness MMIF observed in ECD0001 and RHD0296.Data from deep diamond drill holes across the valley, from the Hamersley Basin to the Carawine Basin, were correlated. The correlation shows that the depositional site of the MMIF in the HPPL diamond drill holes is consistent with a proximal ramp setting, in which iron-rich shales wedge up-palaeoslope and shelf-derived carbonate turbidites wedge down-palaeoslope. Not only is it the occurrence of these shales that define the MMIF, but they also determine the northward potential to develop orebodies, as they are the source of iron from which iron-rich oxides and carbonates of metamorphic or diagenetic origin form.CITATION:Hurst, J, KrapeP, B and Hawke, P, 2013.
