This paper describes the key components of the Grasberg Block Cave (GBC) mine design and the development and construction status of the mine. Drawpoint production from GBC will be initiated in 2018 following the closure of the Grasberg open pit. Full production of 160 000 t/d is planned for 2024, which will make it a 20-year time period between initial access development in 2004 and full production.Diluted ore reserves are about 1 Bt at a grade of 1.0 per cent Cu and 0.78 g/t Au. The mine plans some 2400 drawpoints on a 20 m × 30 m drawbell spacing in a 700 000 m2 footprint using the El Teniente layout. The drawpoint opening sequence includes five production blocks, the first two of which are scheduled to be undercut simultaneously in 2018. Ore is transported using diesel-powered load-haul-dumps to a series of orepasses and then delivered via loading chutes to a rail haulage system, which delivers the ore to a three gyratory crusher complex. Crushed ore is transported to the mill stockpiles via dual inclined conveyors.Development and construction of the substantial fixed facilities are now well underway. Primary access for personnel and materials is via the 6 km Ali Boediardjo (AB) adits. A service shaft will hoist personnel and materials from the AB adits level to the various operating levels. Shaft commissioning is scheduled for late 2015. The rail haulage system installation and construction is in progress and is due to be commissioned in 2017, which is timed to coincide with the commissioning of the ore handling system. Ventilation is provided through a series of large intake and exhaust drifts, and two of the four main fans have been commissioned. Independent Project Analysis (IPA) is in the business of benchmarking the performance of capital projects on behalf of owner companies in the processing and extractive industries. IPA assesses between 500 and 800 projects each year. The projects are conducted globally and range in size from about $1 million to over $30 billion. Using the data, we are able to benchmark the performance of Australian projects against the rest of the world. This presentation focuses on the performance of large (greater than $100 million) projects that involve chemical or thermal processing.We regularly hear calls for more processing to be conducted in Australia but on the other hand industry leaders are concerned about the poor success rate of solids processing projects in Australia. Data gathered by IPA indicates that there is good reason for the concern. Out of a sample of 31 large processing projects conducted in Australia, 23, or 74 percent, were classed as failures. This performance is significantly worse than for similar projects in other parts of the world. The presentation analyses why the performance is worse and demonstrates that many of the reasons behind the failures were manageable by the project team. Furthermore, members of the project teams on at least half the failed projects knew that the projects were on a path to failure before the project was authorised but could not be heard.The presentation discusses how large projects that involve process design and, in many cases, new technology, need to be set up for success. *This is an abstract only. As the mining industry looks to new technologies for a safe work environment and increased production rates, so should emergency response teams when dealing with organisational incidents. Implementation of technology has transformed the nature of incidents within the international mining community with lower frequency, high impact events replacing high frequency, low impact incidents of the past. In turn the approach to mines rescue response and preparation has naturally diversified. New rescue technologies when applied effectively can only further advance preparation and the response of mine rescues teams. This paper discusses some of the changes associated with mines rescue as the industry embraces technology. It highlights some recent rescue responses and their approach and gives examples of some of the new technologies being used for improved mines rescue.

The evaluation of ore deposits consumes much effort, cost and time, hence research work must aim to minimize these inputs with no loss of accuracy. The present study is devoted to assess the optimum conditions and methods of calculations which give minimum costs of ore exploration. An area of (a x a) where "a" is the zone of influence of the semi-variogram, i.e. (2800 x 2800 square metres) located within the Abu Tartur plateau is the subject of the intensive study. The distances between boreholes are varied ie. a/4, a/6, a/8 and a/ 10 respectively. The average ore grade (G), thickness (t) and relative ore reserves (tG) are calculated by four methods. The results indicate that at a distance equal to a/5, the inverse distance squared method gives the best results. These parameters save about 50 percent of the cost of exploration with a map accuracy greater than 90 Percent.

A soil cover isolates potentially acid-forming (PAF) mine wastes from atmospheric interaction and thereby mitigates acid mine drainage. As a cover that comprises either a single layer or a composite barrier, it essentially manages percolating rain water from flowing into these PAF materials and minimises air flow as oxygen has low diffusivity in saturated soils. However, the availability of suitable soils as cover materials is limited, especially in arid and semi-arid regions where weathering rates are low.This paper investigates the potential use of mine wastes as cover materials in a water-shedding soil cover in north-west Queensland. Four cover trial plots were built using mine wastes as cover materials. Each 2.3 m cover trial plot consisted of a 1.5 m soil cover made up of waste rocks and fines, a 0.5 m drainage layer that consisted of 0.1 m waste rock aggregates and a base layer made up of blended mine tailings. The hydrologic properties of cover materials were determined by in situ measurements and laboratory experiments, which, in turn, were used as input in a numerical model that described the cover’s transient soil moisture profile. The successful performance of the cover is reliant on the long-term stable geochemical behaviour of the substrate used as cover material. Therefore, investigations were carried out to determine the geochemical properties of the cover materials constructed from benign waste rock using static and kinetic tests, with the objective to increase the level of certainty of the material’s benign characteristics. The floatability methodology developed by the AMIRA P9 project through research contributions by the Julius Kruttschnitt Minerals Research Centre (JKMRC, Brisbane, Australia), University of Cape Town (UCT, Cape Town, South Africa) and McGill University (Montreal, Canada) has been successfully commercialised through JKTech. The methodology involves detailed flotation plant campaigns which require large quantities of data to fit models that can be used in JKSimFloat (a steady state simulator for the flotation process). The methodology to date, although widely accepted as the best flotation optimisation technology available, is limited to existing circuit optimisation and requires full plant or pilot plant data to calibrate new models. The floatability of new ore types cannot be characterised using this method unless a pilot campaign is undertaken. After reviewing a large database of existing industrial floatability data, a new methodology is proposed that involves a laboratory based flotation test procedure and review of the floatability database to characterise the floatability of new ores. The full methodology is labelled the floatability index test procedure (JKFIT). This paper outlines the JKFIT procedure and the results of applying this methodology to pilot plant data from a copper ore. JKFIT was applied to two different feed sizes (namely a P80 of 180 microns and 212 microns) of this copper ore. The results of applying JKFIT to this case showed that the metallurgical response (in terms of grade and recovery) from the full pilot plant survey data could be predicted well. Further validation of this methodology was conducted on a separate copper ore. The results from this validation also showed that the JKFIT test was able to be used to predict the full plant performance. The JKFIT test has the potential to become the 'drop weight' test of flotation which will improve the confidence in plant design flow sheet layouts, allow full orebody characterisation and prediction of key grades and recoveries before the ore enters the plant, and will provide an improved methodology for chemistry impact analysis on different ores.

The capital cost of major items of mining equipment is very high. The operating cost of such equipment is also high. It is therefore important that such expensive equipment is used productively. To this end mine management uses production data systems and management accounting systems to monitor events and provide data for analysis to enable management to make operating and business optimisation decisions. This could be done better if there was an understanding of productivity in terms of its utilisation and efficiency components. What has been missing has been a methodology to properly account for the productivity of equipment in terms of its contribution in dollars to the costs and profit of the mine. An explanation of the Productivity Accounting methodology will be given. It will then be shown that productivity has two components, that of capacity utilisation and efficiency. These are defined and the dollar contribution of each to costs and profit shown. The efficiency component tracks the effect of proportional changes in input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes. The capacity utilisation component tracks the effect of step changes in the input cost quantities used in the mining process as mining production changes.

Block caving is an important mining method for the future economic exploitation of large, low-grade, steeply dipping orebodies. While block caving is not a new method, there are still many unknowns surrounding the mechanics driving the process, particularly as we are forced into deeper, higher-stressed and stronger ore deposits. The caving industry is desperate to provide some explanation behind the myths of caving geomechanics to better predict and manage current caves and caves of the future. Large amounts of data are collected to help understand caving, but it is not fully utilised and current approaches for analysing the data are capacity limited. The application of virtual reality and scientific visualisation (VRSV) technology to visualise and analyse block caving is a critical future component in the assessment toolbox. VRSV enables large, complex, multidimensional data sets to be analysed and the power of human visual problem solving processes to be utilised. Block caving is a complex system and needs to be analysed as a system, rather than looking at individual factors one at a time. A software module has been developed at UNSW Australia for use in the advanced visualisation interactive environment for analysis of the block cave mining system (BCMS). This fully immersive, 3D virtual assessment tool shows exciting potential and is used to analyse the BCMS with a close linkage to time (ie the chronological occurrence of data). This tool will enable a true investigation into the cause and effect relations within the BCMS. Current research is investigating Newcrest Mining Limited’s Ridgeway Deeps operation and is aiming to turn some of the cause/effect relationships into increased geomechanics understanding to provide improvements to ground control management. "In today’s mining industry, the pressure of reducing costs and increasing production while maintaining high safety standards is at the forefront of operational endeavours. A combination of specific mining knowledge and technological advances has helped enable this notion. Fleet management systems have been developed to enable sites to better measure and manage production to improve operational efficiency.The integral part to managing production is having accurate, readily accessible data. This empowers key stakeholders in the management team to drive production reporting, materials tracking and budget forecasting.If a site does not run a fleet management system, manual input is heavily relied upon for production data, which introduces increased risk of human input error. Errors can drive outcomes that don’t achieve increased production at a reduced cost. Alternatively, a fleet management system can have improved accuracy but involves a high monetary investment. Such an investment is not always feasible for smaller mining operations subject to current industry cost pressures.The Emeco Operating System has been developed in alliance with sites such as the Mungari White Foil Operations by satisfying the criteria of a low intensity hardware installation, material tracking data validation processes, remote monitoring, identification of metrics to improve overall operating efficiency and providing the right information to key stakeholders.Citation:Beckman, R, Elms, T and Sampson, M, 2016. An experimental design has been developed to investigate the relative influence of distinct pulp and environmental properties on froth stability in the flotation of a typical porphyry copper ore. In particular, factors such as frother and collector type, feed particle size (P80), solids per cent, composition (chalcopyrite and pyrite content), as well as grinding environment (mild steel versus stainless steel, high and low pH) have been varied in a controlled manner, and the resulting froth stability evaluated. A previously developed froth stability column, based on the Bikerman approach, was used to measure the froth height and half-life in each test. The relative effect of each factor is presented here on a comparative basis. It is shown that frother type is the most important factor, with marked difference in froth stability when switching from methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC) to glycol based frothers. Solids per cent and particle size also play a significant role. The grinding environment had lesser effect on the resulting froth stability, although mild steel grinding gave higher froth stability compared to stainless steel grinding. The experimental evidence supports the hypothesis that in porphyry copper flotation the grinding environment influences surfaces oxidation, pyrite activation and the extent of hydrophobic particles reporting to the froth phase. This has an indirect effect on the resulting froth stability, which is however small if compared to the other factors. This work is still in progress, and extension to other mineral systems is planned. The gravity-induced stirred mill such as the TowerMill is an energy-efficient grinding solution used in secondary, tertiary, and regrinding duties in the mineral processing concentrator. The interest in this technology is emerging, with more than 300 mills installed globally in various grinding duties and commodities for the last 30 years. Although the technology is matured, there are still opportunities for improvement and the development of new knowledge to improve its circuit energy efficiency and reduce water consumption. Recent studies show that a combination of stress intensity, ore hardness, slurry density, and mill feed configuration can be used to evaluate the performance of the grinding circuit. A recent pilot-scale TowerMill test work at various stress intensities shows that a lower operating work index and size-specific energy were achieved at higher agitator tip speed and using medium size grinding media. These outcomes were confirmed through several site trials. A smaller 17 mm grinding media has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 18 per cent and 11 per cent, respectively, compared to the 20 mm in a magnetite concentrator. Moreover, the conversion from top feed to bottom feed configuration has reduced the operating work index and size-specific energy by 13 per cent and 37 per cent, respectively. The circulating load was reduced by 34–38 per cent, leading to a reduction in the dilution water consumption in the hydrocyclone feed sump by 20 per cent. A variable frequency drive offers flexibility to change the stress intensities on the TowerMill, where a 35 per cent reduction in specific energy was achieved when the ore became soft. This paper explores the potential design and operating strategies that can be implemented to enhance the energy efficiency, reduce water consumption and reduce CO2 emissions in the circuit and finally evaluate its impact on the total cost of ownership.

This paper investigates the problems that are encountered in mining at extreme depths. It looks into the rock mechanic aspects, especially the high stress levels that will occur, and the hazard of rockbursts. Furthermore, environmental problems are discussed, with refrigeration and reduction of neat loads being major methods of maintaining ,sorkable conditions. The paper concludes that it will be of tmost importance to have a planning team of Tne highest quality to ensure that conditions are maintained so that work can be carried out safely and under reasonable conditions.

Exploration by Cyprus Minerals Australia Company (formerly Amoco Minerals) has successfully outlined significant Au-(Cu) mineralisation at Starra, 150 kilometres south-east of Mt. Isa. Mineralisation is stratabound and localized in deformed and metamorphosed ironstones (B.I.F?) and iron-oxide bearing schists of the mid-Proterozoic Staveley Formation. Over 90% of the presently outlined potential ore occurs in 4 discrete zones within a strike length of 3.5 kilometres. The inferred geological resource in these zones is approximately 6 million tonnes grading 5 grams per tonne gold and 2% copper. Roughly half of this is open-pittable, but more rigidly applied mining criteria will probably reduce the exploitable tonnage. Detailed infill drilling is in progress and a pre-feasibility study has commenced. The joint venture partners, Cyprus Minerals (75%) and Elders Resources (25%) expect to make a development decision by the end of this year.

A process for eliminating nickel from electrolytic zinc plant solutions by precipita- tion with dimethylglyoxime (DMG) was developed to enable the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australasia Limited (EZ) to treat nickel-bearing zinc dust precipitates. These precipitates are leached to recover their Cd and Zn content. The final Zn bearing solutions contain relatively high Ni concentra- tions (20-100 mg/1) and are treated with DMG and then neutralized to pH 4.6-4.8. The pre- cipitate is filtered off and the solution returned to circuit. DMG consumption is about 200% of theo- retical requirement, and Ni removal is 80% complete overall.

In all electrolytic zinc plants cadmium is removed as an impurity prior to the zinc electrowinning stage of the process. Cadmium metal is the favoured form of this by-product and most plants use an electrolytic route for its production. The formation of dendrites in cadmium electrowinning processes is the major limitation to deposition rates. There is an economic incentive, therefore, to better understand the factors affecting their growth. A technique that has been used by others to examine fundamental aspects of dendrite growth has been applied to industrial strength electrolytes. It involves potentiostatic deposition in a cell containing the electrolyte of interest. The variation in the current with time at a given overpotential allows the determination of the dendritic growth induction time. A method was developed (the Locus method) from the investigation of a set of such potentiostatic curves, obtained over a range of applied overpotentials, that appears to give a measure of electrolyte quality with respect to dendritic growth in galvanostatic deposition. The Locus technique predicts that zinc at industrial concentrations in cadmium electrolytes should have a significant effect on morphology and that deterioration of morphology will occur as the zinc concentration in the electrolyte is increased. This effect is consistent with literature prediction and was shown to relate to a reduction of the diffusion limiting current density. Magnafloc R333 is used as an additive at Pasminco Metals-EZ to control the morphology of cadmium deposits and the Locus method was successful in predicting its dendrite inhibiting properties. A possible mechanism is discussed. This work has opened avenues for future research with respect to a technique that may have an industrial application in electrolyte characterisation and has pointed to a direction in which better understanding of galvanostatic dendritic growth may be found.

Recent mapping (1989-1992) by the Northern Territory Geological Survey in the Tennant Creek 1:250 000 map sheet area has resulted in substantial revision of the lithostratigraphy of the Tennant Creek Block (Donnellan, Hussey, and Morrison, in press). Briefly, the former Warramunga Group (Dunnet and Harding, 1967; Dodson and Gardener, 1978) is divided into the Warramunga Formation, and an overlying less deformed volcano-sedimentary succession, the Flynn Subgroup. The latter is conformably overlain by the Tomkinson Creek Subgroup of the Tomkinson Creek province in the north of the Tennant Creek Inlier. These two Subgroups constitute the Churchills Head Group which is essentially equivalent to the Hatches Creek Group of the Davenport province to the south of the Inlier.

This paper describes an apparatus which was developed to study solid-vapour equilibria and presents results which were obtained during a study of the FeCI3-AlCI3-CI2 system. Analysis of the results showsthat fractional desublimation might offer a means of achieving a useful separation of the iron and aluminium chlorides produced by the chlorination of bauxite. The results, presented in the form of isothermal vapour pressure curves covering the range of temperature 160-200°C, support the earlier findings of Semenenko et al (Dokl Akad Nauk SSSR, 154: 42-43 (1964)) that the solid phase contains two terminal solid solutions.The equilibrium constant for the formation of the mixed dimer, FeAICI6, was approximately 4. The latent heat of sublimation of aluminium chloride varied from 18 to 26 kcal/mole AI2CI6 for solid compositionsfrom 0.9 to 0·5 mole fraction FeCls3.

The writers of these notes, having conducted some tests on the steam consumption of air compressors under varying conditions, believe that the detailed results of such tests will be of interest to the members of the Institute, and may lead to the contribution of further and more valuable information, of benefit both to manufacturers and users of this class of machinery-to the manufacturer in that he frequently has the opportunity of giving a very thorough test to the machine in the shop, and-tothe user or purchaser by making clear to him what may be reasonably demanded of a high-class machine. It must be remembered that, though of the highest importance, a low steam consumption is but one of the many features of a high-classmachine; for the present, however, it has been considered advisable to confine the paper chiefly to the first-mentioned aspect, with such information concerning the air ends as is obtained along with the steam consumption tests. Unfortunately, too few of these tests are conducted, and but few results are published, therefore the writers feel that no apology is needed in bringing their results before the members.Some nine months ago the Brilliant Extended G. M. Co. was supplied with a compressor by Messrs. Thompson and Co., of Castlemaine, and with the object of testing its actual performance.

The new law on Environmental Protection and Management (Republic of Indonesia Law 32 of 2009) was passed by the Indonesian parliament in September 2009. This law aims to protect Indonesia's rapidly degrading environment by providing tougher provisions for both polluters and law enforcers. In doing so, the law introduces a number of new constraints and potential business risks that will affect all companies in Indonesia, particularly mining companies. Some of the newly introduced concepts follow.   Mining companies will now require an environmental license, issued by the Minister of Environment or local counterparts. This license is a prerequisite for all other business and operational permits. The Minister can revoke the environmental license at any time in case of an environmental incident or dispute. Mining companies may be exposed to additional environmental taxes and bonds besides already existing reclamation and mine closure bonds.   There is an increased risk of environmental lawsuits, due to more stringent controls on one side and greater protection for NGOs on the other side who make claims, false or true, against the company. Company executives and managers can be sued and they will be held accountable if environmental degradation has indeed occurred due to the company's activities.   Companies may face increased liabilities due to a change in the definition of contamination. The new definition is more stringent (and on occasion may prove too stringent to be practical); it also provides little room for flexibility in its application.   As implementing regulations are prepared over the coming two to three years, mining companies will need to adjust to the new law. A proactive approach is needed to minimise risk. Recommended actions include: upgrading existing environmental impact assessments to a higher standard; conducting baseline studies and thoroughly documenting environmental conditions on a regular basis; closely tracking regulatory changes, especially the forthcoming implementing regulations on the new environmental law; and regularly engaging key government and community stakeholders on environmental issues.
