The assimilation and the exothermic behavior of Zn-Zr metallic powder compacts into molten aluminum was studied by measuring simultaneously the temperatures inside at the centerline of the compact, at its surface, and inside the molten aluminum bath, as well as the net downward force acting on the compact. In addition, the exothermic behavior of these compacts was also investigated in an argon protected atmosphere. The temperature rise inside the compact increases significantly with the mass ratio of zirconium in the compact and to a lesser degree with the aluminum bath temperature. Experimental results on the recovery of these compacts in molten aluminum will also be presented.

"Cobalt refining at Vale Canada (previously known as Inco) has been associated with Ni production. Because certain compounds of both metals carry risks for adverse health endpoints by inhalation exposure, it is critical to understand the aerosol concentrations of specific substances and the metallurgical processes through which they enter the air. Vale Canada has therefore decided to describe the histories of its Ni-related operations and to report industrial hygiene measurements when available. This paper describes electrolytic Co operations carried out at Port Colborne, Ontario (1954–1966), and provides aerosol measurements (1995–2008) for current Co electrowinning operations.RÉSUMÉ L’affinage du cobalt chez Vale Canada (anciennement Inco) a été associé à la production de nickel. Puisque certains composés de ces deux métaux comportent des risques d’effets néfastes pour la santé par exposition à l’inhalation, il est essentiel de comprendre les concentrations en aérosol des substances spécifiques ainsi que les procédés métallurgiques par lesquels ils entrent dans l’air. Vale Canada a donc décidé de décrire les historiques de ses opérations liées au nickel et de divulguer les mesures d’hygiène industrielle lorsqu’elles sont disponibles. Le présent article décrit les opérations électrolytiques effectuées sur le Co à Port Colborne, Ontario (1954–1966), et fournit des mesures de la teneur en aérosol (1995–2008) pour l’extraction électrolytique actuelle du Co."

This study focuses on the flow characteristics of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys in thin sections. The pattern assembly consisted of spiral horizontal patterns, 6.25 mm (0.25 inch) and 12.50 mm (0.50 inch) in thickness with a common sprue. Al-Si alloys with silicon levels of 14%, 18% and 22% were poured with superheats of 60°C, 115°C and 170°C. It was observed that metal fluidity (in terms of flow length and metal velocity) increased with increase in silicon levels and superheat for both section thicknesses. It was also observed that, for a section thickness of 6.25 mm (0.25 inch), silicon level had more pronounced effect on the metal fluidity. For 12.50 mm (0.50 inch) thickness, both silicon level and superheat affected the metal fluidity. The surface hardness of the castings increased with an increase in silicon level of the alloys at the gate and the flow tip. Detailed study of the flow tip was also carried out with a view to understanding the effect of silicon level and superheat on undulated flow length, surface hardness and microstructure.

"More than 400 plants in the world are able to accumulate nickel in their aerial parts at concentrations higher than 10 g per kg of dry biomass. Then, nickel (Ni) can be recovered from the biomass of these hyperaccumulator plants. Agromining is a chain consisting in growing such plants and recovering metal and has been developed thanks to the combined know-how of agronomy and hydrometallurgy. Plants can be grown on serpentine soils, containing rather high concentrations of Ni, on sterile heaps or on contaminated soils. This crop enables us to extract Ni from secondary resources, and to improve soil quality by lowering its metal content. For example, Alyssum murale can be grown at the field scale in the Balkans, at yields corresponding to 110 kg Ni per hectare.Hydrometallurgical processes have been designed from the lab scale to the pilot scale to produce nickel salts: ANSH (ammonium and nickel sulphate hexahydrate), nickel sulphate, acetate, etc. and so on. These salts are used for surface treatment and in the paint and chemical industry. Ni salts are prepared from ashes, after plant calcination. Processes are based on the conventional methods of hydrometallurgy: acid leaching followed by different precipitation steps. These processes will be presented, as well as the pilot scale design. A life cycle assessment has been performed and clearly shows the environmental interest of this approach as a potential part of an anti-erosion strategy. An economic assessment has proved process feasibility and the final step is the launching of a start-up. At the moment, the approach is widened to other metals (cadmium, cobalt) and rare earth elements (REEs)."

The thermal recovery of bitumen reservoirs by steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is often designed to maximize the operating pressure. In general, the benefits of higher operating pressures are higher steam temperatures that maximize the reduction of oil viscosity, potential permeability enhancement associated with lower effective stress and shear dilation, and a larger pressure window to allow flexible control of the producer. This is especially important for shallow reservoirs where the pressure window for injection and production is smaller. Higher operating pressure can reduce thermal efficiency (due to heat losses), but the other benefits usually compensate. The limitation of the maximum operating pressure is then based on maintaining caprock integrity. Thus, shear and tensile failure mechanisms must be quantified and managed. This paper presents a geomechanical analysis of caprock integrity for SAGD operation. Both analytical and numerical approaches are used to investigate the modes of caprock failure. Main factors in the analysis are the knowledge of the initial stress state and proper representation of the complexity of the geomaterials. Typical initial stress states for northern Alberta are presented showing the potential for low initial minimum total stress and elevated initial shear stress levels. The stress-strain behavior for the sand and caprock materials is discussed focusing on the potential for shear dilation in the sand and shear strength behavior in the caprock. Elasto-plastic constitutive models used to represent the sand and caprock are presented and compared using numerical analysis. The increase in pressure and temperature alter the stress state and disturb the soil matrix. This disturbance results in shear dilation of the sand matrix creating regions of enhanced permeability and porosity. Also, the transfer of stress and strain to the caprock causes dynamic stress changes and, therefore, dynamic behavior of shear and tensile failure conditions. Calculations are presented showing the stress paths associated with SAGD operations, suggesting better design of lab testing programs and the implications for shear dilation in the sand and shear failure in the caprock.

"To obtain large-sized billets with fine grains and homogeneous elements distribution, uniform direct chill (UDC) casting process, based on annular electromagnetic stirring coupling with intercooling, was employed to produce 7055 alloy billets with a size of F584 mm in this study. The results indicated that there were the coupled effects of annular electromagnetic stirring and intercooling on grain refinement and element homogenization, and also the billets produced by the UDC casting process showed excellent hot workability in comparison to the normal direct chill casting process.INTRODUCTION The high solute 7055 aluminium alloy has a wonderful combination of high specific strength and hardness, good resistance to stress corrosion cracking and high fracture toughness, which is very useful in aerospace application (Yan et al., 2013; Mondal & Mukhopadhyay, 2005). The production of large-sized 7055 alloy billets with high quality is the basic condition for the subsequent application of 7055 alloy to the aircraft. Inhomogeneous microstructures and performances of 7055 billets result from the high alloying element content and the inhomogeneous cooling condition in different regions of billets during the conventional direct chill casting (Paramatmuni et al., 2004; Lalpoor et al., 2011), which will bring bad influence to processing property, functional performance and utilization rate of materials. To alleviate segregation and obtain fine and uniform grains, some effective treatment methods were proposed including electromagnetic stirring (EMS) (Vives, 1989), ultrasonic vibrating (Zhang et al., 2011) and melt conditioning (Fan et al., 2013), on the melt to obtain fine and uniform grains. However, these methods could not effectively decrease the large temperature difference between central and periphery parts of the billet, because the solidification mainly depends on outside cooling including mould cooling and water spraying cooling. To change the heat extraction pattern of the billet functioned solely from the outer surface, based on annular electromagnetic stirring (A-EMS) invented by Xu et al. (2010), Luo et al. (2017) proposed uniform direct chill (UDC) casting coupling A-EMS with intercooling in the direct chill (DC) casting process. An in-mold cooler was inserted to the melt sump, and thus the alloy melt temperature and concentration at solidification front become more uniform."

The knowledge of 3D velocity distribution of P- and S-waves in rocks is very important parameter for interpretation and understanding the nature of seismic anisotropy observed in the earth’s crust and upper mantle. A new high-pressure measuring head was designed and constructed to enable ultrasonic sounding of spherical rock samples in 132 independent directions under up to 60 MPa of acting hydrostatic pressure by means of simultaneous longitudinal and transversal sounding. New measuring system enables ultrasonic sounding of spherical rock samples by using a pair of P-wave sensors and two pairs of perpendicularly polarized S-wave sensors (TV and TH) see Fig.1. Shear wave sensors polarization is oriented according to rotation axis of the sample. Special shear wave gel was used to transfer shear waves between the sample and sensors under acting hydrostatic pressure. An isotropic glass sphere was used to check and calibrate the new measuring setup. A spherical sample of a biotite gneiss from the Outokumpu scientific drill hole was used for testing measurement. There is shown that both, P- and S-wave velocities, can be measured simultaneously up to 70 MPa, respectively. We report data of the 3D velocity distribution of P- and Swaves measured for the first time on a sample sphere of biotite gneiss. We rely, in particular, on the directional dependence of compressional and shear wave propagation and their relationship to the crystallographic (CPO) and shape preferred orientation (SPO) of major rock-forming minerals. The 3D seismic measurements revealed a strong foliation-related directional dependence (anisotropy) of P- and Swave velocities. Ultrasonic measurements were compared with 3D velocity calculations based on neutron diffraction measurements of crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) of major minerals. Comparison of 3-D velocity distribution (P, S1, S2 and S1-S2) determined by two completely different methods ultrasonic sounding and neutron diffraction is presented. Measurements showed that the intrinsic bulk anisotropy is basically caused by the CPO of biotite constituting about 23 vol.% of the rock.

"It is often reported that the concept of single-plane-fracture is not sufficient to account for the productivity from shale gas/oil wells. Many researchers introduce the concept of the stimulated reservoir volume to describe observed production behaviour. However, the characteristics of the stimulated reservoir volume are not well understood. In this study, to investigate the characteristics of fractures and surrounding region induced by the hydraulic fracturing, a devised hydraulic fracturing experiment was conducted using the cylindrical shale specimens in the laboratory.Two resins were prepared as the fracturing fluid for the experiments: cyanoacrylate, an instant glue, mixed with a fluorescent paint (resin A), and methyl metaacrylate, a thermosetting acrylic resin, mixed with a fluorescent paint (resin B). These resins were able to fix within the specimen after fracturing. This is because the present study aimed to only detect fractures induced by hydraulic fracturing. Cut sections of the specimens were observed under ultraviolet light irradiation. It is expected that the hydraulically induced fractures and the surrounding regions will be detected because the induced fractures filled with the resin should emit light, while the other parts will not.The specimens, which were collected from the Kushiro Coal Mine in Hokkaido, Japan at the depth around 275 m, were roughly 85 mm in diameter, 170 mm in length, and cored normal to the sedimentary planes. An injection hole with a 10-mm diameter was drilled onto the center of the specimen parallel to the sedimentary plane to simulate hydraulic fracturing in shale gas development. The experiment was conducted under a uniaxial loading condition of 3 MPa and the fracturing fluid was injected into the sealed injection hole at a constant flow rate using a syringe pump.After the fracturing experiment, the resins were fixed in the specimens and then the cut sections were observed under ultraviolet light irradiation. As a result, the hydraulically induced fractures, which were filled with the resin, are clearly observed. Detailed microscopic observations show that the main fractures are tortuous and are accompanied by many thinner ramified fractures. Additionally, fractured regions where the resin penetrates significantly are observed around the main fractures in the specimens fractured by the resin B. These induced fractures and fractured regions are considered to be the stimulated region in which permeability is improved. The necessity of estimation on the features of fracture tortuosity and ramified fractures is indicated for more accurate understanding of the well production and the stimulated reservoir volume."

"Ni-based superalloys have been replaced in the last low pressure stage of jet turbines for aircraft by titanium aluminides. In order to improve the properties of these Ti-Al alloys and extend their usage deeper into aircraft engines grain refinement by inoculation has been investigated. Borides are the most common inoculants for Ti-Al alloys, however they form brittle particles which are detrimental to the final properties of the alloy. Inoculants manufactured from a Ti-Al alloy with refractory metal additions were proposed to alleviate the issues arising from inoculation with brittle particles. An alloy was chosen which had less than 10% lattice mismatch with the alloy of interest (Ti-46Al) to maximize efficiency. Initial experimentation showed a decrease in as-cast grain size by a factor of 2 between the inoculated and non-inoculated samples along with an absence of the brittle particles found with boron inoculations. Investigations into the interaction between the inoculants and the melt were also carried out to better understand the inoculant size distribution and efficiency upon solidification.INTRODUCTIONTitanium aluminum alloys are an interesting material for aerospace applications. Their high temperature oxidation resistance and high specific strength make them particularly promising (Kim & Dimiduk, 1991). Recently, titanium aluminides have replaced nickel based superalloys in the last low pressure stage of the GEnx turbine engine. In order to increase their usefulness in turbines their properties must be improved for high temperature (>800oC) applications. Grain refinement is one method to improve the properties of a material, however current methods of grain refinement of Ti-Al alloys by inoculation have significant drawbacks. A new method of inoculating Ti-Al alloys by using Ti-Al alloys with small refractory metal additions (Nb, Ta) has been developed to avoid the drawbacks of current methods while still being effective grain refiners."

"Currently, tailings water is required to be recycled in minerals processing plants. When the flotation tailings water of complex copper-sulfur-tungsten polymetallic ore is reused to the flotation of copper-sulfur ore, a portion of tungsten would be lost in copper concentrate or sulfur concentrate due to the addition of the collectors used for oxidized ore which are also effective for the sulfide minerals in the process of tungsten flotation. At the same time, the technical index of copper concentrate and sulfur concentrate would be seriously affected by tailings water. Our experimental researches of many years show that the copper concentrate with a grade of 18.36% Cu at a recovery of 76.67% is obtained for the raw ore containing 0.60% Cu, 18.99% S, 0.16% WO3 in small locked cycle test using recycled water, through simple pretreatment of the tailings water from tungsten flotation and adding special regulator CW and new tungsten collector TM. The result is close to the performance without using tailings water. And, in the continuous pilot experiment which was continuously conducted for 4 days with the same technology, the following results was obtained: the copper concentrate with a grade of 21.74% Cu, the recovery was 71.55%; the sulfur concentrate with a grade of 45.16% S, the recovery was 80.10%; the tungsten concentrate with a grade of 42.63% WO3, the recovery was 54.62% relative to raw ore (the recovery relative to scheelite was 76.47%). The throughput of the continuous pilot experiment is 1.0~1.2 t/d, and the raw ore contains 0.56% Cu, 18.80% S, 0.14% WO3 on average.INTRODUCTIONMining industry is one of the most important developing fields, it supplies raw materials for industrial production as well as discharges much waste water. Tailings water is the main source of beneficiation waste water, it would result in severe environmental pollution if discharged directly. Generally, the tailings water would bring undesirable effect on flotation index after simple pretreatment by lime (Kalin, Fyson, & Wheeler, 2006). On the other hand, the treatment of tailings water through ion-exchange (Cui & Liu, 2015) before recycling is of high cost. Generally, in the flotation of Cu-S-W polymetallic ore, when the tailings water from tungsten flotation is treated simply by lime and recycled to the flotation of sulfide minerals, the flotation index of sulfide minerals decreases, and a portion of oxide mineral would be lost in the sulfide concentrate. As a result, the recycle rate of this kind of tailings water is relatively low, some of the tailings water is discharged after simple treatment and then environmental pollution is caused subsequently. One of the effective ways to improve beneficiation performance and increase the recycle rate of tailings water is to conduct research on developing recycle technology for flotation tailings water of complex copper-sulfur-tungsten polymetallic ore."

The Mount Bourbeau Lac Berrigan area is located just to the north of the Town of Chibougamau. The axial trace of the Chibougamau syncline borders the northern part of both areas. The area contains Archean rocks of the Roy Group, intruded by the Cummings Complex and the Line Lake tonalite stock. Proterozoic sedimentary rocks occur in a series of outliers. Various Cu, Zn, Pb, Ag, Au and Mo showings are dispersed over the area in a wide range of time and space. Pre-Kenoran (stratiform and stringer) showings related to volcanic activity may be distinguished as well as the syn-or post-Kenoran (vein) types whose nature is imprecisely known. In this area, the stratiform showings occur in the Gilman and Blondeau Formations, whereas the vein type showings occur for the most part in fractures or breccias within or along the contacts of the various sills of the Cummings Complex. Mount Bourbeau is distinguished by the greatest variety of showings as well as the proximal volcanic facies of the Blondeau Formation. A volcanic centre is presumed to lie a short distance north or east of the locality. Locally, the Line Lake stock contains significant silver, molybdenum and gold mineralization. Its role as a metal reservoir, a source of heat for the circulation of hydrothermal fluids and its control of the local tectonic style remains to be determined.

"On the da y shift in Number One Mine at Nanaimo on Vancouver Island, on May 3, 1887, William Griffiths, a coal miner with many years experience, fired a shot to advance the face of the crosscut. A flame ran out for a distance of fifteen feet along the roof and then extended up the slope for ten to twelve feet, and although many would have called this a blowing out shot, Griffiths said it was just a feeder. ""A blower"", he said, ""would have caused an explosion."" 1There was no explosion. Griffiths reported gas and the area was cleared for three hours and then work resumed. When the shift changed at 3:00 p.m., the fireman reported all places clear of gas and the ventilation good.2The ventilation in Number One Mine was the best anyone had ever seen. The air in the mine was almost too cold. The current was so strong that it sometimes blew out the flame on the miners' fish oil lamps. It delivered five to six hundred cubic feet of air for every man and animal working in the mine. The law required only one hundred cubic feet 3The miners considered Number One to be relatively safe. The manager was proud of the mine and its up-to-date equipment"". Recently, there had been reports from France and America about the explosiveness of coal dust, but the manager did not think his mine was sufficiently dusty to be dangerous.5 The dust lay thick on the floor of the mine. Sometimes when a shot was fired the dust rose in great clouds. When a miner was shovelling it, the dust would billow up and be carried off by the current of air. The dust was also in the roof and in the stopings, put there intentionally to fill up the spaces and prevent the accumulation of methane gas."

The solvent extraction of Cu from acidic leach solutions is carried out using oxime extractants. The mechanism can be described as liquid ion exchange, where a labile H+ in the oxime replaces Cu++ ion from the pregnant leach solution. The process is reversible and, at high acidity, the copper is stripped back to the aqueous phase. As the extraction proceeds, the acidity of the aqueous phase increases and the equilibrium may shift against the extraction reaction. This phenomenon may become significant in leach solutions with high copper concentration, where large amounts of acid are transferred from the solvent into the aqueous phase. An efficient way to increase the recovery of copper consists of splitting the extraction into two circuits, and either neutralizing with lime or extracting the excess acid of the intermediate raffinate. In the second case, the acid can extracted using a solvent, which can be stripped with a base, e.g., NaOH or ammonia. A third option is direct neutralization with soluble basic salt, e.g., Na2CO3, within a single extraction battery. The choice of the preferred process depends on the specific process demands and on the relative availability and price of the raw materials and by-products price.

"A study was undertaken to develop a flowsheet for treating a high grade silver/gold ore body by cyanidation, CCD and Merrill Crowe precipitation, with tailings detoxification to meet stringent limits for cyanide and thiocyanate concentrations in the final discharge. In one of the flowsheets examined, free cyanide in the final leach liquor was recycled to the mill where it was hoped that it might react beneficially with fresh ore to reduce the cyanide makeup by an equivalent amount. However, laboratory results suggested that most of the cyanide recycled to the mill reacted with iron forming a soluble ferrocyanide complex. This would have had a negative impact on cost, not only because the cyanide recycled to the mill could not be claimed as a credit, but also because the presence of ferrocyanide in the final tailings meant copper sulphate had to be added to the SO2/air cyanide detoxification process to precipitate the iron cyanide. In an alternative flowsheet that was examined, recycling of cyanide to the mill was abandoned, and this allowed the milled slurry to be pre-aerated in a single mixing tank before cyanidation. During alkaline pre-aeration, any ferrous ions that are generated in the mill are oxidized to ferric ions, which, unlike ferrous ions, are inert in cyanide solution. This significantly reduced cyanide consumption and lowered costs in the detoxification of the tailings. In this paper, the cost implication of these two circuits is compared.INTRODUCTIONMost of the gold that is produced by hydrometallurgical processes is recovered by cyanide leaching. The reason for that lies in the superior thermodynamic stability of the gold cyanide complex and the favorable economics this confers on the process (Fleming, 2014). However, the gold in most of the gold-bearing ores processed is a very minor component, and therefore, the leaching response is often dominated by that of the host minerals.Many gold ores treated by the cyanidation process contain iron minerals. Cyanide reacts readily with some iron minerals forming ferrocyanide as one of the compounds. Ferrocyanide is stable when solutions are exposed to air and does not retard the dissolution of gold. In fact, it has been claimed that potassium ferrocyanide in the presence of oxygen is a weak solvent for gold (Hedley & Tabachnick, 1958). The main problem with the formation of this compound is the consumption of cyanide. Ferrocyanide contains six molecules of cyanide for each atom of iron {Fe(CN)64-} so the wasteful consumption of cyanide is greatly increased by its presence. Thiocyanate is also often produced during the reaction of certain iron sulphide minerals with cyanide, and contributes to the wasteful consumption of cyanide. In addition, environmental regulations in certain countries demand that thiocyanate be removed from the tailings, and this adds significantly to the cost of tailings treatment."

With the attainment of high temperatures it becomes possible to process any kind of material (particularly ceramics) in their liquid state. In the plasma spraying process, the material to be sprayed is rapidly heated until it is molten and is propelled by high velocity gases onto a surface where it adheres, to give protective coatings for a wide range of applications. The method could be considered as one of the most versatile and rapid to build up thick deposits (of plastics, metals, ceramics, cermets) and also free-standing artifacts for particular requirements without resorting to lengthy forming and sintering studies. Although plasma spraying is at the production stage in industry, advanced processes have also been developed for economically producing a wide range of new materials. This paper illustrates the benefits of the process and evaluates the challenges it represents.

Introduction In northern Ontario, refractory clay is found on four rivers of the James Bay watershed: the Abitibi, the Mattagami, the Missinaibi, and the Moose. The clay all belongs to the same geological formation ( the Mattagami of Lower Cretaceous age) , and occurs within a structural depression or 'basin', the boundaries of which have never been defined but which appears to cover at least 1,500 square miles of territory. The recently constructed James Bay extension of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario railway crosses the northeast end of the basin at the Onakawana lignite field, which by rail is 126 miles north of Cochrane, 605 miles north of Toronto, and 60 miles southwest of Moose Factory. Smoky Falls, the northern terminus of the railway owned by the Spruce Falls Power & Paper Company, Limited, is 7 miles south of one other point in the basin, i.e., the outcrops of refractory clay, sand, and kaolin at the foot of Long rapids on the Mattagami river. Smoky Falls is 50 miles north of Kapuskasing. In a very early report(l) , Dr. Robert Bell, of the Geological Survey of Canada, described '"light coloured marl in horizontal beds" from the Missinaibi river, and noted that the lignite also occurring in the river was probably :associated with the marls. This was undoubtedly the Cretaceous refractory day. Other early writers noted the occurrence of fire-clays, but it was not until Joseph Keele(2), of the Geological Survey, visited thee region in 1919 and studied the clays that their real significance was known.

The benefits of Thiess? extensive experience is brought to each client and project, whilst business improvement within projects, to the mutual benefit of both the client and Thiess, is a key part of all long term contract relationships. Historically, optimal business outcomes were closely related to the achievement of production and cost performance measures. Whilst these remain fundamental to successful mining businesses, other elements of sustainability are assuming increasing importance. As a large energy user, greenhouse and energy management is becoming an important part of Thiess? business. Thiess is a signatory to Australian government initiatives such as Greenhouse Challenge Plus, and is integrating energy management into its operations and business improvement programs, in many cases to the benefit also of the client. This paper will highlight the benefits that an organisation such as Thiess can bring to a mine owner. Thiess? approach to business improvement and cost reduction, sustainability and energy management, as well as the relationship between these will also be considered. Increasingly, overall mining performance is dependent on the alignment of formally disparate elements.

Introduction The purpose of this paper is to interest mining men in the economic possibilities of sand deposits suitable for modern foundry work. Many members of the profession are constantly travelling over the country and it is felt that some knowledge of the necessary properties of foundry sands will enable these men t0 recognize such deposits. It is the experience of the writer that good sands suitable for the varied work of a foundry, such as that of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company, at Trail, are almost impossible to obtain from western Canadian sources. It is hoped that the following discussion may arouse some interest in the search for such sands. Sands are used in foundries for two purposes. The main use is for making moulds suitable for receiving hot metal. The mould must retain the? required shape until the metal has solidified. The second use of sand in the foundry is as an abrasive in sand blasting. This is a relatively minor use, and consequently will not be dealt with in detail. Any coarse sand with a high content of quartz will serve this purpose, but round-grained sands are superior to angular types, because they have not the same tendency to shatter on impact with the casting. Sand plays an extremely important part in the successful production of sound castings. This is more evident today than ever before, due to the greater variety of castings and alloys, each of which requires special sand characteristics. Poor sand is responsible for a great many foundry troubles which formerly were attributed to bad? metal; in fact, one investigator goes so far as to say that ninety per cent of bad castings can be traced directly to the sand. Very little of the vast amount of sand distributed over the earth's surface is suitable for moulding. It is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly the properties which are essential in good moulding sand. Sand for this work must be able to withstand the wash and hydrostatic pressure of molten metal, and yet be sufficiently porous to allow the gases generated in the mould to escape.

"The Kerr-Addison mine is on the northeast shore of Larder Lake in the township of McGarry, District of Timiskaming, Ontario. It lies just south of the highway leading to the town of Kirkland Lake, 25 miles to the west.The property was first staked in the summer of 1906, by a party of prospectors led by a Dr. Reddick of Ottawa. Subsequent assessment work resulted in the erection of a 20-stamp mill in 1908. Gold from this mill was used in the first gold coins to be minted in Canada. The operation did not prove successful, however, and mining was suspended. In 1914 a consider-able amount of underground development was undertaken by the Associated Goldfields Co., without success.In 1936 Kerr-Addison Gold Mines Co. carried out large-scale sampling from four adits driven into the hillside at the mine. Results were not satisfactory, but it was decided to drill one last deep diamond drill hole from surface. The hole cut a wide section of gold ore. With this encouragement, further development outlined a large tonnage of ore, and a 500-ton mill was put into production in May, 1938. In 1939, its first full year, the mine produced 54,480 ounces of gold and 2,732 ounces of silver. By 1955 the mill had been expanded to a rate of 4,549 tons daily, and in this year 427,193 ounces of gold and 23,490 ounces of silver were produced.From 1938 to the end of 1955 the total production, from 17,473,797 tons milled, has been 3,607,462.74 ounces of gold (0.2064 ounces per ton), and 182,278.56 ounces of silver, with a total value of $131,073,037."

"TOF-SIMS (Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry) was used to detect collectors sorbed onto the surface of mineral particles in concentrate and tailings samples from the Brunswick, Matagami and Kidd Creek concentrators. This technique uses ion beams from either Cs or Ga sources to sputter the particle surface, a method which reduces fractionation of the collector molecule during sampling.In the Brunswick Zn circuit, sphalerite particles lost to the scavenger tails had less amyl xanthate and isobutyl xanthate compared to sphalerite recovered to the Zn final concentrate. Xanthates were detected on the surface of sphalerite particles floating to the CuPb final concentrate.At Matagami, significantly more isopropyl xanthate and isobutyl dithiophosphate were detected on sphalerite recovered to the Zn final concentrate, compared to sphalerite lost in the Zn rougher tails.In the Zn circuit of Kidd Creek, sphalerite lost to the tails had on average ten times less xanthate compared to sphalerite recovered into the Zn final concentrate. Xanthate was also detected on the floated pyrite particles. In addition to isobutyl xanthate, amyl xanthate was also detected on the floated sphalerite and pyrite particles.This preliminary investigation has (a) demonstrated the ability of TOF-SIMS to detect individual collectors on particle surfaces from plant samples and (b) shown that TOF- SIMS is an excellent tool, complimentary to TOF-LIMS, in establishing the surface chemistry of minerals as related to mineral processing."
