Introductory and General Coal has one unique quality that distinguishes it from other minerals, one that is too, often forgotten. This is the quality of ubiquity. No other single mineral supplies such a wide and varied range of human requirements nor, up to the present, is there any indication of a rival in this regard. There is, consequently, reason for individual study of each of the major portions of the overall market for coa1. The provision of heat for our homes is a necessity of life in our Northern climate and the largest single source of this heat is coal. It is intended to present here a factual survey of the use ?of coal in home heating throughout Canada and the effect of these requirements upon the production of coal and the development of this phase of the mineral industry. The coals used for house heating in Canada fall into two more or less distinct classes, the very low volatile fuels such as anthracite and including coke, and the bituminous coals, including the sub-bituminous and lignite types. The bituminous coals are, of course, consumed in very large quantity by industry and the railways and are the most important type both in tonnage and in respect to the area supplied. Canada consumes annually for all purposes some 4,400,000 tons of anthracite, 4,300,000 tons of coke exclusive of Petroleum coke, and some 40,000,000 tons of bituminous coals. This is a fair measure of the relative importance to the overall economy although it will be seen later that the concentration of the household use of anthracite and coke into one area does create a considerable problem.

"IntroductionIn this paper it will not be possible to cover all details of the reagent systems at Brunswick Mining and Smelting but it is hoped that a description of the evolution of these systems will be of some benefit. The concentrator of Brunswick Mining and Smelting located near Bathurst, New Brunswick was originally designed as a 3,000 ton per day operation but before construction commenced was uprated, with 4,500 tons per day being treated by the summer of 1964. Development of the open pit at another ore body five miles away was initiated in 1965 and additional concentrator and crusher facilities went into operation in September, 1966. Present total daily throughput is over 8,000 tons per day. The ore at Brunswick is very high grade but mineralization is very fine grained and requires grinds generally over 75% minus 400 mesh for liberation. The amount of surface exposed using grinds of this order understandably requires great quantities of reagents, Reagent mixing systems for the original concentrator allowed only for batch mixing and were very expensive in labour cost especially.During the first three years of operation total number of men employed in reagent handling reached a peak of four men per shift and six men on dayshift unloading cars for a total of 22 men. At present only one man is employed on shift, and four men on dayshift take care of unloading and mixing reagents, a total of 8 men. The man on shift is almost entirely occupied with checking feeder operation, flow rates, and head tank levels. Most commonly used reagents are tabulated in Fig. 1 showing average monthly and daily requirements in the Brunswick operation as well as pounds per ton of mill feed as found in 1969. It is very obvious that with over seventeen tons each of lime and soda ash and six tons of copper sulphate used each day, opening of bags and mixing batches of solution is an inefficient undertaking."

"The commercial potential of a silica-kaolin deposit that occurs on the banks of and close to the Missinaibi River in the District of Cochrane, Ontario, is under evaluation by Algocen Mines Limited. The geological features of the deposit, as well as its probable origin, are described. Mineralogical analysis of the deposit samples indicates that the principal minerals are quartz and kaolinite clay; it is estimated that about 20 per cent of the deposit is kaolin clay. The impurity minerals present are: a slightly magnetic Fe-Ti oxide mineral, goethite, muscovite mica, tour-maline, staurolite, anatase and zircon. Laboratory research studies are in progress to develop and evaluate suit-able methods for the separation of silica sand from kaolin. Results to date indicate that good-quality silica sand with an Fe,03 content in the range of 0.012 to 0.025 per cent can be produced. It appears that the clay portion can also be beneficiated to yield products meeting commercial requirements. It has been possible to beneficiate a portion of theetlay to obtain the particle size distribution now specified by industry. However, research is continuing to develop suitable separation and beneficiation methods which can produce kaolin clay meeting all the commercial requirements."

"The Cobalt camp is by far the most productive camp of the Temiskaming silver-cobalt area. The date of discovery, 1903, is an important one in the history of Canadian mining; from then on prospecting and mining grew rapidly to take the prominent places they now hold in Canadian life.At Cobalt, prospectors and operators, who were to play prominent parts in other Canadian camps, received their initial training. The exploration campaigns leading to the discovery of several new camps were organized at Cobalt, and a considerable part, indeed, of the funds for these campaigns were profits from mining at Cobalt.The discovery of the Cobalt camp was purely accidental, not the result of any purposeful search. Fred LaRose, a blacksmith employed in the construction of the Temiskaming and Northern Ontario Railway, discovered mineral, afterwards determined to be valuable, within a few feet of the right-of-way. This discovery became part of the very productive LaRose mine. The publicity given this discovery, particularly by Willet G. Miller, later Provincial Geologist of Ontario, led to the rapid development of the camp.ProductionCobalt is a great camp by virtue of its silver production; cobalt is also important, although clearly subordinate. Copper, nickel, arsenic, and bismuth are by-products of mining for silver and cobalt and have not been of great importance to date.The following table gives the metal content of ores, concentrates, etc. from the Cobalt camp for the years 1904 to 1954 inclusive, as reported by the mines (l):"

"Scientists throughout the world have observed radioactive disequilibrium in the uranium decay series. Radiometric and fluorometric determinations of U in plants from the Goldfields district and in sediments and rocks from the Beaverlodge district exhibit marked radioactive disequilibrium. The eU/U ratio in plants rooted in mineralized ground shifts from greater than unity to less than unity for those rooted in background soils. A similar shift is observed in the transition from rocks to stream sediments and to lake sediments in the Beaverlodge district.Results of a Rn-Ra-U survey of lake bottoms in the Key Lake district show that anomalous hydromorphic U from U mineralization is parallelled by anomalous Rn, even though there is much less Ra in the lake-bottom sediments than one would expect from the amount of U present. IntroductionDisequilibrium in the U decay series has been studied for many years and is observed in almost all surficial environments. Rosholt (1959) measured U, 234Pa, 23O'fh, 226Ra, 222Rn, and 210Pb in a large number of U ores and outlined six types of situations to explain disequilibrium. Davy (1974) outlines the geological significance of radioactive disequilibrium situations with respect to exploration. Levinson and Coetzee (1978) discuss possible mechanisms by which separations of parent and daughter elements are affected and suggest analytical pitfalls that may be encountered in the use of radiometric techniques when disequilibrium has occurred. Generally, it is the oxyphile and easily complexed parent 238U (with its associated isotopes 235 U and 234U) that is leached from rocks and soils at a faster rate than are the daughters, 230Th, 226Ra, 2loPb, and 206Pb. This mobilized U is adsorbed on sediments in streams and lakes, or enters groundwaters, where it is eventually precipitated under reducing conditions, occasionally in oregrade concentrations. The following paper deals with some of the aspects of the law as it relates to the oil and gas industry in the Province of Alberta, but it should be stated here that consideration of this large subject will be confined to discussion of only those laws, rules, and regulations which affect actual exploratory operations. The paper will not touch on those branches of the law which deal with such matters as income tax, customs, and other kind red subjects which are of a highly technical nature and which are more properly the field of the specialist. Generally speaking, any system of law consists of certain major components. There must be, firstly, a national authority capable of ensuring the existence of the state itself and of maintaining the stability and continuity of its institutions; secondly, a philosophy of government covering the relationship of the state to the individual and of the individuals to one another; thirdly, a body of law to effect the purposes of the philosophical principles; and, fourthly, a judiciary to arbitrate any disputes that may arise from such relationships. All of these components and the system itself are, of course, subject to a varying degree of modification with the changing times and with the influence upon them of other systems of law. Now. while it is true to say that all systems of law comprise these similar basic features, it is apparent that the end result of any two systems of law in their impact upon the individual may be quite different.

Acid mine drainage (AMD) remains one of the major environmental problems for the mining industry particularly for many abandoned mine sites. The production of AMD as is commonly known can significantly affect the surrounding groundwater and surface water of the mine site. With the objective to investigate the impact of the AMD produced at the abandoned Kettara mine site (Morocco), groundwater sampling campaign was performed at this site. The sampled waters were analyzed to determine the hydrogeochemical composition, and then results were analyzed using different studied methods such as multivariate statistical analysis and geochemical modeling techniques. Investigation results show that the hydrochemistry of sampled waters is characterized by the relatively significant enrichment of Ca2+, Mg2+ and SO4 2-. The typical mine waters belong to the (Ca2+ +Mg2+)-SO4 2-type. Seasonal variations in major ion concentrations were partly attributed to dissolution/ precipitation processes. The saturation index (SI) calculation of the representative dissolved minerals in waters show that groundwater samples are undersaturated with respect to most potential sulphated secondary minerals.

"Part I. - PrinciplesIntroductionIf the oxides of the metals are listed in decreasing order of the magnitude of their heats of formation, the list appearing in Table 1 will be formed. It will be apparent at once that this is essentially the well-known electrochemical series (Table li). The metals at the bottom of the list exhibit great stability and are attacked only by the most violent of chemical reagents. Higher on the list, the metals become more reactive until, at the head of the list, the metals lithium and calcium are unstable in moist air.The reactive metals to be considered lie above manganese. In this group will be found familiar and abundant metals such as aluminium and magnesium, the unfamiliar yet abundant metal titanium, the rare and mysterious metal beryllium, and others of greater or less interest.While these metals exhibit properties as unlike as those of uranium and magnesium, they have in common a specialized and difficult extractive metallurgy. They form compounds of great stability, and their reduction is to varying degrees difficult. The position of a metal in Table 1 (and more particu1arly its position in the free energy column) gives a numerical value to this property.Oxides with low free energies of formation may be reduced with great ease; thus silver and mercury may be produced from their oxides by simple heating in air.Lead, iron, and zinc may be separated from their oxides by heating with carbon to moderate temperatures. Magnesium oxide, on the other hand, .requires a high temperature and very special conditions before it will yield magnesium metal."

The traditional approach to managing information flow between a mine underground and overground, applied in copper mines of KGHM Polska Miedz S.A., is mostly based on exchanging spoken information using the mine telephone network and printed documentation. This way of information flow significantly influences effective use of time of a shift foreman employed at a mining division. In order to minimise multiplication of significant information generated as paper documentation, a concept of an IT system module to input basic data concerning operation of the mining division was developed. The idea is based on computer software that permits inputting data in the underground and their immediate sending to the overground. The above-mentioned solution will permit significant reduction of administrative work time that each foreman has to do on each shift. The time saved on filling forms and communication will permit the foreman and the other workers involved in information flow to spend more time for execution of their basic duties. In the case of the supervision employees working in the overground, the IT system will allow all the interested persons to be informed directly, with no necessity to transfer the information on the situation in the given mining division by turns from one to another. On the other hand, saving time on administrative works will permit the foreman employed in the underground executing more detailed inspection of workplaces in his subordinate mine division. "Auriferous quartz veins occupy zones of dilation. Foldgenerated dilation zones are systematically distributed and are dependent upon the folding mechanism. Comparison of natural and theoretical folds indicates that different mechanisms operated in the Halifax and Goldenville formations.In the slates of the Halifax Formation, the folds are of similar type and internal strain is most intense in the limbs. This internal strain is probably accommodated with little or no dilation.In the meta-sandstone and slates of the Goldenville Formation, a combined flexural and tangential longitudinal strain mechanism, modified by pure strain, produced the folds. Tension fissures produced by this mechanism are: (a) saddle 1'eef veins in slate horizons, (b) veins normal to bedding in meta-sandstone layers in the fold hinges,(c) veins along faults in the cores of tight fold hinges and (d) zones of en- échelon veins in slate honzons in the limbs of folds. Because veins in fold hinges (a, b and c above) account for most of the gold production in the Meguma Group, other factors controlling the distribution and size of these veins are summarized below.1. "Arsenic is widely known as a toxic element for humans, animals and plants. Because of more stringent wastewater standards not only in Japan but also around the world, research for appropriate and efficient treatment method for arsenic is becoming increasingly important. Coprecipitation or adsorption process using ferrihydrite is widely implemented for dilute As(V) removal from wastewater. In this study, the sorption mechanism of dilute As(V) with ferrihydrite in coprecipitation or adsorption process was investigated. To accomplish this, we conducted batch experiments of coprecipitation or adsorption and compared these results for sorption isotherm and zeta potential. These experimental results showed that sorption mechanism in coprecipitation process depends on the initial As/Fe molar ratio; simple twodimensional adsorption onto the surface of ferrihydrite when the initial As/Fe molar ratio was < 0.4, and some three-dimensional uptake with ferrihydrite when it was = 0.4. We also evaluated the sorption mechanim by analysis of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (XAFS). XRD or XAFS spectra showed that surface precipitation of amorphous ferric arsenate was formed when the initial as/Fe molar ratio was = 0.4, beyond the thermodynamic bulk precipitation range for ferric arsenate.INTRODUCTIONArsenic is toxic to animals, including humans, and long-term exposure to arsenic via drinkingwater causes cancer of the skin, lungs, urinary bladder, and kidneys, as well as other effects on the skin such as changes in pigmentation and thickening (Ghosha et al., 2008). Elevated levels of arsenic are often present in the environment as a result of the weathering and dissolution of minerals as well as in response to numerous anthropogenic sources including the discharge of mine wastes, coal fly ash and the use of pesticides that contain arsenic (Nriagu, 1994; Singh et al., 2007). Indeed, the potential for arsenic exposure affects many people, as evidenced by several million people in Bangladesh and India being at risk of exposure via drinking water obtained from contaminated groundwater sources (Ahmed, 2001).Acid mine drainage (AMD) containing arsenic is a global environmental problem (Dold, 2008; Liang and Thomson, 2008) that also affects Japan, which has many abandoned or closed mines that have been generating AMD for the last few decades (Masuda et al., 2008). Several such facilities in Japan produce AMD containing dilute concentrations of arsenic that exceed Japanese effluent standards (0.1 mg/dm3) (METI, 2006). For example, AMD from the abandoned Horobetsu sulfur mine, the largest AMD source in Japan, contains approximately 10 mg/dm3 arsenic."

Introduction The property and plant of the Falconbridge Nickel Mines, Limited, is situated about 13 miles northeast from Sudbury, in Falconbridge township, near the eastern extremity of the southern Nickel Range. As early as 1899 or 1900 some work was clone on this property by the late Thos. A. Edison, when a shaft was sunk through 80 feet of overburden to within a few feet of the ore-body. At this point quicksand was encountered, which made it impossible to continue with the equipment at hand. As a result, the activities of the Edison party ceased in this section. There was no further progress until 1915 and 1916, when an extensive diamond-drilling campaign, carried out by the E. J. Longyear Company, located the ore-body that is now being worked. The property was acquired by the present operators in 1928, and in September of that year active mining development was commenced. Features Influencing Design Of Plant Early in 1929 plans were prepared for a smelter and the necessary crushing and sorting plant. In spite of the general trend towards the reverberatory furnace as a smelting unit, it was decided to erect a blast-furnace plant. The limited tonnage to be treated, of course, influenced this decision to a great extent. However, it was known that, with the proper procedure, extremely favourable results, both economic and metallurgical, could be obtained in blast furnace smelting. The possibility of very low slag losses, the simplicity of operation by the elimination of roasting plant, fuel plant, etc., the ability to handle coarse feed, and the lower initial cost, were considered factors in favour of the blast furnace. Notwithstanding the fact that we might be called on to treat a certain amount of concentrate, it appeared that the blast furnace was the proper unit for the contemplated operation.

CIMVal is a special committee of CIM formed on the recommendation of the Mining Standards Task Force of the Toronto Stock Exchange and the Ontario Securities Commission.After solicitation of views and consultation with various interested parties, the CIMVal Draft Standards and Guidelines for Valuation of Mineral Properties were released for comment in February 2002 and were finalized in February 2003. CIMVal’s objective was for the standards to be used by the mining industry in general and to be adopted by Canadian securities regulators and Canadian stock exchanges. To that end, the standards contain many of the definitions and concepts of National Instrument 43-101, Standards of Disclosure for Mineral Projects, which came into force in February 2001.The intent of the CIMVal Standards and Guidelines is that mineral property valuations be carried out by appropriately qualified individuals and that all relevant information be fully disclosed. It consists of two parts: standards, which are mandatory in the valuation of mineral properties, and guidelines, which elaborate on the standards and provide guidance and recommendations for the valuation process and for reporting."

A brief account of economic developments in and around northeastern Alberta is presented and mention is made of mining and industrial developments currently of interest in the area. Planned and projected operations are briefly discussed for this region. The history of geological surveys and mining activities in the Shield area of Alberta and the adjoining parts of Northwest Territories and Saskatchewan is traced. Reassessment of the presently-known economic picture of northwestern Canada in conjunction with some recent information on Precambrian structures of northeastern Alberta points to some interesting mining possibilities, particularly in and around that province.

This paper reports the results of the field demonstration campaign of a new process for removing and destroying ammonia from mining/ metallurgical effluent solutions. The 50-day campaign was carried out at a uranium plant in Saskatchewan, Canada. The process was developed by adapting and integrating two well established technologies: zeolite adsorption/ elution to extract the ammonia from the effluent stream and to produce a concentrated ammonia eluate; and conversion of the ammonia in the eluate to innocuous nitrogen by applying bacterial nitrification-denitrification (NH3 = > NO3 - => N2). The data show that reasonable target criteria were met, under very challenging operating conditions. Problem areas and possible causes for poor performance are identified. Preliminary and generic cost estimates of the process are also presented.

A series of dense medium separation (DMS) tests were performed on four low-grade copper ores from Mount Polley mine in order to determine their amenability to pre-concentration. The tested ores contained disseminated sulphides, mostly chalcopyrite with low copper grades (0.15% - 0.2%) and relatively high iron grades (4.76% - 5.63%). The samples were screened into different size fractions ranging from 9.5 mm to 50.8 mm and DMS tests were performed on each size fraction at various separation densities. The pre-concentration efficiency at different size fractions and separation densities was evaluated in terms of metal upgrading and distribution. Mineralogical tests were also performed on selected DMS sink and float samples in order to understand the influence of mineralogy on the pre-concentration efficiency. The results showed that significant copper upgrading was achieved for intermediate size fractions only at the highest separation density tested. The copper recoveries generally increased with particle size at all separation densities. However, it was impossible to upgrade the copper content in the ores and achieve acceptable recoveries and mass rejections at the same time. Copper recoveries and grades showed a strong correlation with iron recoveries and grades indicating that it is possible to pre-concentrate copper by recovering magnetite and other iron-containing minerals in the ore. Overall, the results suggest that the optimum separation density and pre-concentration efficiency is a function of particle size, and that the ore mineralization properties limit the performance of DMS as a pre-concentration technology for such low-grade disseminated ores.

"High Pressure Grinding Roll (“HPGR”) technology is applied in a broadening range of minerals processing applications for relatively wet or moist materials. HPGR grinding of dry material or involving drying and air classification is more common, for example in cement manufacturing. A number of minerals processing plants are also operating with dry material, either due to process reasons, such as considerations of preceding or subsequent process stages, or as dictated by local conditions of arid areas and scarcity of water. The present world-wide expectation of decreasing availability of water supply urges us to look for alternatives that minimize water consumption.Recently established and envisaged future HPGR applications with dry ores have indicated that the technology of dry crushing and classification as practiced in cement and limestone grinding can be applied in minerals processing. Moreover, dry technology could very well be applied for generating a final fine product at sizes near or below 100 microns, as may be required for beneficiation by, for instance, flotation, magnetic separation or tank leaching.Dry HPGR grinding requires special attention in maintaining suitable process economics, when considering power input in grinding, drying and classification. In some cases, HPGR capacity and roll surface wear life may be negatively affected by a lack of moisture in the feed.This publication summarizes some of the features of, and experiences in dry HPGR applications. This includes design aspects of the classification system and discussion of the wear protection of the roll surfaces. The paper also includes examples of operational experiences of dry practices in minerals processing and cement plants."

The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto inorganic supports and amorphous carbon rest on well consolidated technologies belonging to the realm of industrial catalysis and of basic catalysis research (1). In spite of the existence of a variety of specific synthetic strategies, their very rationale relies on three main approaches i. e.: A: precursors of both the metal nanoparticles and of the relevant supports (or the support itself) are intimately mixed (even let to react) at ambient conditions and then thermo-reduced according to very controlled protocols (2); B: precursors of metal nanoclusters are let to be adsorbed onto suitable supports from the gas or liquid phase and subsequently thermally decomposed (3); C: metastable size-controlled metal nanoclusters are previously generated in a liquid medium and subsequently transferred onto pre-formed support particles (4). The production and dispersion of metal nanoclusters onto organic soluble supports is also a rather well documented academic praxis (5, 6, 7, 8) able to provide e.g. size-controlled Au0 nanoclusters of 4.4±1.7 nm (5). Our group started in 1997 developing (9) an innovative approach to the synthesis of metal nanoclusters dispersed inside insoluble, albeit accessible (see below) mechanically robust gel-type resins (10), which procedure was tested so far on palladium metal. Metal ions are previously dispersed upon ion-exchange inside of the polymer framework, followed by chemical reduction and by the aggregation of born metal atoms into nanoclusters, the size of which is templated (11, 12) by the three-dimensional intercommunicating meshes that build up the overall polymer framework (Figure 1).

"Past Growth The Canadian coal industry has grown rapidly during the past two decades. Coal production increased over four-fold between 1965 and 1982; consumption almost doubled, imports remained relatively flat, exports soared and total demand increased nearly two and a half times. Coal production grew during this period at an average rate of 8.60/o, compounded annually; this remarkable performance is shown in Table 1 and Figure 1. The relationship between production and consumption is shown in Figure 1, where in 1981 the total Canadian production of coal for the first time exceeded total Canadian consumption. ln Figure 2, the relationship between imports from the United States and Canadian coal exports is shown; in_ 1981 again for the first time, exports offshore exceeded imports into Canada. The rapid growth in Canadian coal use between 1965 and 1982 followed a major decline after World War II, as the country moved rapidly to an oil based economy. Changes in consumption patterns between 1945 and 1982 are shown ~n Table 2. Railway consumption of coal was reduced to zero m the early 1960s. The industrial and domestic consumers market share fell from about 660/o in 1960 to 6.70/o in 1975; this share, however, appears to have stabilized in recent years and actual volumes can be expected to increase in the future. The steel industry's share of the coal market fell over the same period, but the volume in recent years has remained fairly constant at about seven megatonnes per year.Perhaps the most significant change in consumption is in the share of coal consumed in the generation of electricity; this has increased from 80/o in 1960 to over three quarters of the total Canadian coal consumed in 1982. This increase in thermal coal consumption has been supplied by indigenous coal, and was accompanied by a decreasing share for coal imported from the U.S.A. into central Canada. It is expected, because of the nuclear power commitment in Ontario, that this share will continue to decrease, although the total volume of coal imported may increase slowly over time. This will likely also have a dampening effect on future coal sales to Ontario from western Canada."

The Federal Government's White Paper on Tax Reform received further major criticism in the reports of the Committees of the House of Commons and the Senate, which recently completed a lengthy review including public hearings of the government's proposals. These reports both criticized the emphasis placed by the White Paper on its concept of tax equity rather than on a system which would promote economic growth. However, the Finance Committee of the House of Commons was prepared to accept, with modifications, a number of the White Paper's key reform proposals. The Senate Finance Committee was more critical of the basic thrust of the tax reform program and recommended that a modification of the existing tax system would be more appropriate to Canada's needs. Both Committees re-commended a more favourable treatment of mining income than that originally proposed in the White Paper, and to some extent both Committees suggested proposals that were even more favourable to the industry than those set out in Finance Minister Benson's amended proposals made in August of this year. This article out-lines the principal recommendations and comments in the reports of both the House of Commons Committee and the Senate Finance Committee.
