"Selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite was studied using various surface treatment methods such as electrolysis, ozone treatment, and plasma. Oxidation via electrolysis method indicated that only chalcopyrite surface is affected by electrolysis due to conductivity difference with molybdenite. Oxidation treatments and XPS analyses indicated that chalcopyrite became hydrophilic due to deposition of oxidized iron on its surface. Various oxidizing methods also showed that chalcopyrite was selectively oxidized and this can apply selective flotation of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. The possible mechanisms are proposed in this work based on surface analyses and thermodynamic calculations.INTRODUCTIONCopper sulphide minerals often associate molybdenite (MoS2) which is one of the most important by-products (Wills, 2006). It is important to recover molybdenite perfectly not only since molybdenite is valuable mineral, but also contamination of molybdenite into copper concentrate or contamination of copper mineral into molybdenite concentrate indicates penalty for both concentrate values (Wills, 2006). Conventional separation of copper sulphide and molybdenite has been achieved with sulphide bulk flotation followed by selective molybdenite flotation with NaHS addition since NaHS works as a depressant for copper sulphide. However, this current process shows imperfect molybdenite recovery and depressant such as NaHS needs to be used under specific flotation plant since it might be environmental contaminant. Hirajima et al., (2014) have been studied selective flotation of molybdenite and chalcopyrite (CuFeS2), which is the most important copper mineral, with plasma pre-treatment. They reported that plasma pre-treatment process followed by washing treatment can improve molybdenite floatability and depress chalcopyrite. This result is attributed to surface oxidation and selective conversion of chalcopyrite and molybdenite wettability. It may be hypothesized that another surface oxidation methods could give a similar result as plasma treatment process. To test this hypothesis, in this study, as comprehensive study of oxidation effect, various oxidation methods such as electrolysis, ozone, and plasma were investigated. Electrochemical measurements, thermodynamic calculations to predict the chemical reactions happened during the process, various surface analyses, and flotation experiments were carried out."

The microscope is now used extensively not only in the examination of solid ore but also in the determination of fragmental mill products. It has therefore become a matter of paramount importance to be able to mount and polish fragmental as well as solid specimens in the easiest and most efficient way, so that the minerals present may be readily determined. In the case of the solid ore the ordinary mount of plasticine set on a glass or metal slide serves for most practical purposes. An improvement on this is furnished by the small brass container inside of which the specimen is mounted in a cementing medium of sealing wax. The latter is the method in use at Harvard University. It has the advantage of uniform height, thus obviating the necessity of a slide of any sort. It is also easily catalogued as the brass holder may be stamped with a convenient series of letters and numbers that will serve as a label. Other advantages of this type are the ease with which any particular part of the section may be re-located, the excellent storing facilities afforded by mounts of uniform size, and the possibility of polishing ten or a dozen sections at the same time by means of a holder which is placed over the polishing wheel, is geared with it, but revolves the opposite way.

This paper outlines the changes that have occurred, and which are still unfolding in Canadian coal mining, firstly, in terms of mining technology and productivity, secondly, in terms of corporate divestments, acquisitions and bankruptcies, and finally, in terms of resource development. The paper also outlines some plausible futures for the industry looking ahead."

"During the fall of 1993, a new Pill-based control strategy was installed in the B grinding circuit at the Kidd Creek Division of Falconbridge Ltd. The control strategy was first evaluated on a grinding circuit dynamic simulator (DYNAFRAG), which permitted the discrimination between more than a dozen possible control alternatives. Once the final choice was made the necessary instruments were purchased and installed. The control strategy was configured on the plant computer and is planned to be commissioned shortly.This paper summarizes the control strategy, the design procedure, the installation and the controller tuning. Some preliminary problems posed by the process prior to implementation are also presented.IntroductionIn 1990 the GRAIIM (french acronym for Research Group on Computer Applications to the Mineral Industry) of Laval University started a research project on Knowledge Based Automatic Control (KBAC). This project is sponsored by a consortium of eight mining companies under the umbrella ofMI1EC (Mining Technology Council of Canada), the Quebec Mining Association (AMQ), CANMET and the Centre de Recherches minerales (CRM). The project also benefits from important grants from the Ministere de l'Education Superieure et de la Science and the NSREC-CRD program.The main objective of this project is the screening of advanced (knowledge-based) methods for data processing (filtering, mass balancing, etc.) and automatic control (model-based control) for their use in the mineral processing operations. The project also aims at transferring these tools to the industrial partners through annual workshops for plant engineers, annual symposia, and through specific in-plant projects where the participation of plant engineers is strongly encouraged.The main objective of this project is the screening of advanced (knowledge-based) methods for data processing (filtering, mass balancing, etc.) and automatic control (model-based control) for their use in the mineral processing operations. "The regional stratigraphy of the Lower Carboniferous Windsor Group in the Moncton Subbasin indicates that evaporites could be present in the Marysville Subbasin, part of what was formerly called the Central New Brunswick Platform. The Windsor Group consists of basement-fringing, algal build-ups (Gays River Formation), in places with intercalated siliciclastics (Parleeville), which are laterally equivalent to deeper-water, very thin to thinly bedded, euxinic limestone (Macumber). The Macumber is overlain by stratiform, nodular to mosaic anhydrite (Upperton) that is hosted by carbonate or calcareous siliciclastics. The sulphate also is equivalent, in part, to the algal buildups. Deep-water salts (Cassidy Lake) which overlie and in places are laterally equivalent to Upperton rocks have a basincentre distribution. The Windsor Group is overlain by shallow water evaporites and mudstones (Clover Hill) or by greenish grey mudstone (""transitional beds""). The paleogeographic distribution of these rocks provide important clues that help predict where deposits of salt and potash can occur.IntroductionCurrently there are three known potash deposits in southern New Brunswick (2, 3 and 4, in Fig. I). All three deposits occur in the Windsor Group of the Moncton Subbasin, but until recently their exact stratigraphic position within the group was not known.The Windsor Group is a cyclic sequence of carbonates, evaporites and red beds that is up to 1.0 km in thickness (Schenk 1969, p. 1038). It is Late Mississippian (Visean) in age and the type area is near Windsor, Nova Scotia. The group was named by Dawson (1873) but the rocks were described earlier by Hartt (1867). Dawson (ibid.) was the first to assign rocks in southern New Brunswick to the Windsor Group."

"Triton Mining Corporation acquired the rights to Mina El Limon in Nicaragua in 1993 by international bid. The bid included the gold operations at Limon and an exploration concession of approximately 4000 km2. Triton assumed control of operations and exploration in May 1994.The Limon mine is located in west-central Nicaragua, approximately 100 kilometers northwest of Managua. The climate is tropical, characterized by a wet season from May through October, and a dry season November through April. Gold at Limon is associated with both banded quartz and silicified breccia veins in Tertiary volcanic rocks, belonging to the lower Coyol Group. Mining is from two open pits and one mechanized underground operation. A second underground mine is currently under development for production during 1997.This paper describes the expansion of the milling facility at El Limon from a nominal capacity of 400 tonnes/day, producing approximately 20,000 ounces of gold annually, to the existing 900 tonne per day mill operation. Engineering of the new mill facility was initiated in September 1994 and construction was completed a year later."

Dust from flue gas cleaning systems at iron and steel production is frequently considered as a waste problem, but it is actually a potential raw material source. By using a technology like the oxyfuel based OXYFINES technique, it can be melted into a suitable form. The product from this processing, however, needs to meet the requirements of a recyclable raw material, here particularly a top-charged blast furnace feed. The present work has been focused on characterization of the product produced from these dusts by OXYFINES technology. The investigation has been carried out on samples of processed dusts from a European integrated steel mill. It was done by means of chemical analysis, density measurement, light optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy combined with energy dispersive spectroscopy, and micro indention hardness measurement. Special attention was paid to the presence of zinc, an element that might be harmful while recycling the material (e.g., in a blast furnace). The results show that the product contains four different regions with different morphologies and properties in the material, which are discussed in detail. The overall conclusion is that by processing the dusts in this way, a raw material suitable for recycling in a blast furnace can be obtained.

"The paper describes the author's experiences in the startup of autogenous and semiautogenous grinding circuits gained over the last twenty years on both large and small grinding circuits. Typical phases in commissioning from construction to startup with ore are covered. The paper also describes experiences with material handling systems, slurry pumping, vibrating screens, trommel screens and pebbles crushing systems. INTRODUCTIONThe commissioning of any new mineral processing plant is an important and exciting milestone in any project. It is at this point in time that the efforts of developers, design engineers, equipment suppliers and operators culminate in a finished product. The successful completion of any project requires that the plant achieve design throughput as quickly as possible. The success of any startup can generally be anticipated by the amount of careful planning which takes place before equipment is operated. The first part of this paper describes the steps in going from construction through to introduction of ore. The organization and planning of startup activities is also covered.The second part of this paper describes some typical problem areas and past experiences in the startup of semi-autogenous grinding circuits. Semi-autogenous grinding circuits present some special challenges in the startup phase. The description of some of these problems and experiences will hopefully provide other operators with suggestions on how to avoid (or at least prepare for) these problems."

These changes are required in order to meet today?s challenging business environment. Mining professionals are focusing on the development of safe and achievable mine plans to maximize mining value while reducing the potential of project delays and production shortfalls. This paper explores how new design tools, techniques and system designs in mine planning are being developed to optimize the value of every ton of ore mined and processed. To differentiate from other papers on long-term planning, this paper focuses on the concept of business planning at the mines. Business planning is the understanding and optimization of the relationship between mine plans and the value it adds in the overall process. The management and key stakeholders of Vale Inco have recognized that the development of a robust mine planning system and programs are essential for the long-term sustainability of the operations.

"Operations started at BCL in December 1973J and the smelter is currently in the seventh year of its fifth campaign. The next major shutdown is scheduled for 1995. During the current campaign, a number of major on-line refurbishments have been carried out without any significant disruption to production. These include the complete rebuild of both drying plant electrostatic precipitators, the installation of a new electrostatic precipitator at the flash furnace, the conversion to a distributed control system throughout the smelter, and the installation of a converter air blowing control system.IntroductionBCL Limited operates a nickel-copper mine in northeastern Botswana approximately 100 km southwest of Francistown. Surface operations for the production of high-grade nickel-copper matte at a design capacity of 42 000 metric tonnes per annum, were commissioned in December 1973. Detailed descriptions of the mine and surface facilities have been presented previously(1-3).Over the years, a number of major engineering modifications and metallurgical projects have been carried out to overcome operating difficulties. improve metal recoveries, increase production rates and provide a better working environment.One of the major results of these projects was an increase in the 19805 in flash furnace feed capacity from 70 t/h to 120 t/h of new concentrate with a nominal feed rate of 105 t/h being achieved.(4)Because of the ore characteristics, i.e. a high mass fraction of ore reporting to concentrate, BCL operates one of the highest capacity spray drying plants and flash smelting furnaces in the world(5).A schematic of the BCL smelter is shown in Figure 1. "The mineral potential of the Nanisivik area was discovered as far back as 1910 when a prospector of the Geological Survey of Canada, on an expedition under Captain J. G.Bernier, recorded a deposit of pyrite with minor sphalerite and galena. An outcrop of the present orebody was discovered by Texas Gulf Company in 1957. Subsequent drilling outlined the orebody consisting of 6,000,000 tonnes of ore containing 13 % Zinc and 1.5 % Lead. The orebody appears to have been formed by the filling of a limestone cavern with sulphides. The sulphide minerals consist of pyrite, sphalerite and galena. The limestone bedrock is mostly dolomite with some calcite and magnesite. A cutoff grade of about 6% Zinc has been calculated.In 1972 Mineral Resources International Limited took an option on the property. Upon completion of the feasibility study by Watts, Griffiths and McOuat, the then new independent project management group of Strathcona Mineral Services Ltd. were engaged to develop the project through the financing, construction and operating phases. Strathcona Mineral Services still manage the project from their head office in Toronto and through the Mine Manager and Department Superintendents at the Mine site. The interest for the project is presently split five ways: Mineral Resources International Ltd. 53.5 %, Government of Canada 18 %, Metallgesellschaft A.G. of Germany 11.25 %, Billiton B. V. of Holland 11.25 % and Texas Gulf Co. 6 %."

"The Quesabe Mine, owned by Brunston Mines Limited, is a gold deposit in the south central part of Duprat Township, northwestern Quebec, about 10 miles northwest of Noranda.It is one of the few gold mines in Canada developed since World War II. The occurrence of gold in the Quesabe fault structure has been known for many years, but serious exploration did not begin until 1945. By 1949, 15,000 feet of diamond drilling had been completed and a shaft sunk to a depth of 635 feet, with lateral development on the 450 and 600 foot levels. In 1949 and 1950 a new shaft was sunk to 1,050 feet, new levels were established at 800 and 1,000 feet, and ore was mined and shipped to the Noranda smelter. After November 1950 the ore mined was treated in the company's own mill. The grade of ore was marginal under existing economic conditions, and production was suspended in April 1952. The mine produced about 100,000 tons of ore with an average grade of approximately 0.25 ounces of gold per ton.GeologyThe bedrock formations are all Precambrian, and the general geology of the area has been described by W. G. Robinson (1). The rocks in the vicinity of the mine are acidic and basic volcanics of the Keewatin series (andesite, rhyolite, agglomerates, tuffs) invaded by the Flavrian Lake granite stock, and by dykes and irregular masses of intrusive felsite, quartz porphyry, syenite-porphyry, diorite, and lamprophyre.The mine workings are in andesite and felsite, about 2,500 feet west of the western margin of the Flavrian Lake stock.The principal structural feature of the area, from an economic point of view, is the Quesabe fault. This steeply-dipping fault cuts all the rock formations of the area, and has been traced for about 11 miles along a strike of north 65 degrees east from Lake Arnoux in the northeast corner of Dasserat Township to Duprat Lake near the east boundary of Duprat Township."

"Predicting the effect of wear can lead to improved control strategies that can possibly minimize the risk of catastrophic failure due to wear while maximizing useable life. In the field of geological exploration, diamond drill rod wear illustrates just such a case. Wear conditions vary with geological formations and compositions. The objective of this paper is to determine a general relationship, based in theory and practice, that will approximate drill rod wear and therefore predict remaining drill rod life in the context of Canadian, Australian and South American drilling campaigns. Simulation results allow the definition of simple graphical tools that permit the estimation of the potential drill depth remaining on a given drill rod string. IntroductionWear, in many industrial processes, is an undesired phenomenon for which enormous efforts are made to control, if not eliminate. However, wear, in many other cases, is an intrinsic phenomenon of the given process. In such cases, predicting the effect of wear can lead to improved control strategies that can possibly minimize the risk of catastrophic failure due to wear while maximizing useable life. In the field of geological exploration, diamond drill rod wear illustrates just such a case where abrasive conditions vary with geological formations and compositions.A number of studies have been published on drill rod wear especially with regards to the petroleum industry over the last thirty years (Lewis, 1968; Rollins, 1968; Smith, 1978; White 1978; Rowe and Wilson, 1981; Cheng, 1982; Eustes, 1986; Dudman et al., 1989; Besaisow et al., 1990). Of these, most studies covered management techniques (Rollins, 1968; Smith, 1978; White, 1978; Rowe and Wilson, 1981; Besaisow et al., 1990) and some described case histories (Cheng, 1982; Eustes, 1986; Dudman et al., 1989). However, little (Lewis, 1968) was presented that could aid in predicting wear in the particular case of diamond drilling in the metal mining industry.The objective of this paper is to determine a general relationship, based in theory and practice, that will approximate diamond drill rod wear and therefore predict remaining drill rod life in the context of Canadian, Australian and South American diamond drilling campaigns."
