Most of the recent papers read before the Institute have dealt with purely scientific matters, or with experiences in the various phases of mining operations. Very little, if anything, has been said concerning the part played by the human element in the industry. It is now opportune to consider this vital factor if we are to cope with the complex work of the present-day miner and, at the same time, meet the demands of the executive for greater efficiency. It is time we made an inventory of our knowledge to determine if we are absorbing the information so essential to modern mining practice. We must keep in close touch with all new ideas and developments in our chosen field and keep ourselves up-to-date in regard to everything pertaining to mining operations in general. The man who ceases to study ceases to advance. There are men who on attaining an executive chair give up all study, because they think they have reached the pinnacle of success. Modern industrial business, and coal-mining is no exception, demands that executive officers shall be 'live wires' -- men who are not only well-informed as to their immediate duties, but who are closely in touch with all matters of importance affecting the industry as a whole. We may be graduates of schools and colleges, but the training we receive in these institutions is only the foundation for our later work. Certainly no executive officer can know too much concerning the work he is engaged in, and the more he knows the more pleasure he will get out of his work.

"""POTASH"" is a term applied to the compounds of the element potassium (K) and when used in agriculture and industry is ex-pressed in terms of potassium oxide (K2O), regardless of the actual com-position of the compound. When a chemical analysis is made of a fertilizer, the amount of K is deter-mined and then calculated to the equivalent amount of K2O. However, the compound K2O does not exist in nature. Most of the world's potash supply is derived from mineral deposits similar to those in Saskatchewan and New Mexico. However, there is some production from concentrated surface brines such as occur in Searles Lake, California; Salduro Marsh, Utah; the Dead Sea; and from well brines in Micl1igan."

"The binary Fe53Mo47 and ternary Fe54Mo30P16 coatings have been electrodeposited from citrate-based electrolyte on mild steel (MS) substrates. The electrodeposition has been conducted for 6 hours at 20 mA cm-2 and 30°C. The electrochemical tests were carried out in chlorate solutions containing 300 g L-1 NaCl and 4 g L-1 K2Cr2O7 at pH 6.4 and 80°C. A number of surface characterization techniques such as SEM-EDS, XRD and EMP were used to study the microstructure of the alloys. The electrocatalytic activity of these coatings was investigated using steady-state polarization and galvanostatic technique. This study revealed that the Fe-Mo-P coating could be considered as a promising cathode material for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results showed an important decrease of hydrogen overpotential for Fe-Mo-P alloy as compared to that of Fe-Mo and especially MS which is a traditional cathode in chlorate industry. The HER overpotential for Fe54Mo30P16 at current density of 250 mA cm-2 was decreased by 30% in comparison to that of MS (1029 mV), and by 16.5% to that of Fe53Mo47 coating (857 mV).INTRODUCTIONSodium chlorate is used for manufacturing of several daily consumption products. This chemical is mainly employed for the production of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) that is a bleaching agent used in the pulp and paper industry. The ClO2 is also consumed for generation of perchlorates, chlorites and other chlorates, as an herbicide and in uranium processing (Cornell, 2002). "The pace at which mining will occur in Northern regions and Arctic lands will depend on the answers to a number of questions. Who are the local aboriginal participants? What land uses are they pursuing? What are their objectives? What is their understanding of the process of mining development? This paper will focus on the last question, communicating the process of mineral development to local aboriginal communities.IntroductionIn the environmental impact hearings for the BHP-DiaMet diamond mine, the smaller Dene Treaty 8 Nation argued for the settlement of its Land Claims as a pre-condition to development. However, the larger Dene Treaty 11 Nation were prepared to permit the mine to proceed on the basis that their people would receive benefits during the construction and operation of the mine.Wherever mining is the significant basis for tax revenues and economic development expectations may be encouraged beyond the realities of the situation. Izok Lake has been known for several decades as a significant mineral deposit but because of its size and the transportation costs involved, it is now a “frozen” ore body. The extent of its mineralization at current metal prices will not support the mining and processing costs without substantial government support for infrastructure and roads. At the opposite side of Canada, Voisey’s Bay clearly satisfies all technical criteria but, nonetheless, two Inuit groups, the Innu, and Métis, have all made LandClaims relating to the mine area.Contrasting the mineral deposits at Voisey’s Bay and Izok Lake emphasizes that the timing of production is dependent on factors such as the grade and amount of reserves, their market price, location and availability of government support. Nonetheless, it is this author’s thesis that given an economic orebody the next most important factor is good communications. It is his view that Arctic mineral development will occur quickly only where good communication has resulted in the trust and mutual respect necessary to implement the mammoth cultural changes required."

"Occupational health programs and their role in improving the quality of working life in the mining industry are discussed. Attention is directed to some problems peculiar to the Canadian mining industry. Factors affecting program development are reviewed, as well as parameters affecting cost-benefit analyses.IntroductionThe quality of working life in the mining industry is a more important consideration than in many other industrial environments because of the very nature of the undertaking. It was a strange paradox of the 1960s that preventive maintenance programs for machinery and equipment were well accepted, whereas the concept of ""preventive people medicine"" was basically ignored. Fortunately, there seems to be a swing toward the development of occupational health programs in many sectors of the business community; however, there is a noticeable lack of consistency and uniformity for thought among the members of the mining industry. The blame for this lack o f progress in the occupational field cannot be entirely attributed to the industry, but must also rest with (for the most part) apathetic and inadequately trained physicians. This latter problem is slowly improving with the growing recognition that a well-planned and executed occupational health program may improve the quality of working life for mining employees and their families.There are a number of factors which relate to occupational health in mining, and its effect on working life quality. Included among these are:1. Community isolation.2. High accident risks.3. Occupational disease risks.4. Production demands and the state of the economy.5. Government regulatory requirements.6. Travel demands.These, and others, reflect on all levels of the mining industry. To examine how these factors can be moderated by an occupational health program, it is necessary to first review the rationale for such a program and some of the costs related to it."

The main direction of research was the application of autoclave technology for the flotation concentrates or biooxidation feedstocks. The industry modernization also expects the possibility of increasing the yield of the flotation concentrate, to allow an increase in gold extraction in flotation circuit. This paper provides brief description of results obtained for concentrates with the yield of 4 and 8%, as well as corresponding biooxidation feedstocks. Technological efficiency of autoclave oxidation is shown for both concentrates and biooxidation feedstocks. The process has been evaluated on a laboratory and a continuous pilot plant scale. Gold extractions from POX discharge are ranging from 94-97% for each product, with only 5-7 kg/t cyanide consumed.

The Gunnar uranium mine operated from 1953 to 1961 on the shore of Lake Athabasca, in 1964 the site was abandoned, and the mine pit flooded. In 1981, the pit was found to be stratified with a chemocline at ~70 m by a sharp change in conductivity and TDS. The uranium concentration was ~700 μg/l on the surface, 320 μg/l at 50 m, and 2,900 μg/l at 110 m. The Ra-226 concentrations were 0.1, 0.06, 0.12, and 0.4 Bq/l. By 2017, the chemocline was ~60 m deep. The highest uranium concentration was 1150 μg/l and the lowest concentration (220 μg/l) was attributed to the chemocline. In the deeper column, the uranium content varied around 750 μg/l. The uranium distribution down the pit profile was aligned with DO, ORP, and TDS. Ra-226 averaged to ~0.4 Bq/l, Ra-226 and uranium profiles were inversely related with the respective maximum and minimum attributed to the chemocline. The uranium and radium amount accumulated in the pit by 2017 was 3,420 kg and 2,163 GBq, respectively. The uranium and radium apparent accumulation trend estimates to 64 kg/y and 41 MBq/y, respectively. A stable chemocline and no concentration gradients in the other parts of the pit suggest that the contaminants are unlikely to inflow from the bottom opening or outside the pit, but rather are mobilized from the pit walls. The contaminants are not in a steady state, and concentrations of both uranium and radium are likely to increase slowly in the future if no remediation occurs.

Petioles is a mining group with integrated operations in the smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, and is also a chemicals producer. Peñoles is the world's foremost producer of refined silver, metallic bismuth and sodium sulphate and is the leading Latin American producer of refined gold, lead and zinc. The Met-Mex Petioles Zinc Plant commenced operations in 1973 with an annual production capacity of 105,000 t/y. Year after year the production has been increased, and at present, the production capacity is 240,000 t/y. In this paper, the leaching process, particularly the operation of the jarosite circuit and its effective removal of impurities such as arsenic, antimony, indium, selenium and tellurium, is reviewed.

Alberta is labouring, and has laboured, under serious difficulties in the marketing of ?her coals, due to a number of conditions which now obtain, but all of which appear capable of solution, and their elimination would insure a very largely increased market for the vast coal resources of that province. It is perhaps necessary to again mention the fact that 15 per cent of the world's coal resources are to be found in Alberta; 21 per cent of that of North America; 72 per cent of that of the British Empire, and 87 per cent of that of all Canada. While we talk largely of the great wealth of Canada, the immensity of her vast natural resources, it is axiomatic that the mere presence of any natural product in a country does not in itself constitute wealth for that country, unless these raw materials can find a market, either in their raw state, or by the process of manufacture. There are many factors, however, which enter into the marketing of any commodity. The chief of these, in my opinion, is price competition. High costs of production materially reduce the radius in which any product can be marketed, and this applies particularly to coal. Mining costs in the province of Alberta are necessarily high at the present time, due in a large measure to the ease with which the 'gopher hole' mine can be opened with small capital.

INTRODUCTION THE property of Madsen Red Lake Gold Mines, Limited lies between Russet and Faulkenham lakes in Baird and Heyson townships, district of Patricia, Ontario. It is about six miles south west of the town of Red Lake, with which it is connected by an all-weather road. All orebodies found to date at the property are silicified lenticular bodies which lie within tuff beds. The ore bas a specific gravity of 2.95. It consists of mica and chlorite schist, silicified and containing a considerable amount of disseminated carbonate, and mineralized with pyrite, pyrrhotite, magnetite, arsenopyrite, and chalcopyrite. Of these, pyrite, in coarse to fine disseminated grains, is by far the most abundant. Pyrrhotite occurs in ?the gangue material as medium to fine disseminated grains. A very small amount of arsenopyrite, in small crystals, is associated with the pyrite, and small grains of chalcopyrite occur in both gangue and pyrite. Although some of the gold present in the ore is quite coarse, a good deal of it is extremely fine.

"The Mount Milligan mine, located in central British Columbia, began operation in September 2013 with a design nameplate capacity of 62,500 dry metric tonnes per day, using a conventional SABC grinding circuit followed by bulk sulphide flotation. Over the last few years, many changes have been implemented in order to debottleneck and optimize the comminution circuit to meet and exceed the nameplate design capacity as well as improve the metal recovery of the flotation circuit. This paper discusses changes, grouped into mechanical modifications, projects, and operational changes. The implementation of these changes as well as ongoing challenges and potential solutions will also be discussed.INTRODUCTION The Mount Milligan mine began production in the fall of 2013. It is a conventional truck-shovel open pit gold and copper mine and concentrator with a 62,500 tpd design capacity copper-gold flotation processing plant. The average head grades for the life of mine are 0.18% Cu and 0.39 g/t Au. At full capacity, the mine produces an average 400 dry tonnes per day of copper-gold concentrate containing approximately 21.5% Cu and 50-60 g/t Au. Current mine life is 21 years. This paper will discuss a selection of the operational, engineering, and administrative changes that have been made at the site since the publication of An Update on Reaching Nameplate Throughput and Continuous Improvement at Mount Milligan (Yue, 2017). PLANT FLOWSHEET CONFIGURATION Run-of-mine ore is crushed through a 60-110 gyratory crusher to a top size of seven inches. Up to 100% of the gyratory crusher product is diverted to the secondary crushing circuit by a moveable gate. The material diverted to the secondary crushing circuit is fed to a vibrating double-deck screen. The screen oversize is placed on a surge pile and reclaimed by four vibrating feeders to feed two 1250 kW standard head cone crushers in open circuit. The screen undersize is combined with the crusher discharge and returns to the conveyor feeding the coarse ore stockpile along with primary crusher product that by-passes the diverter gate."

This model considers how a construction firm will adopt full scale robots like manually controlled machine, tele-controlled machines, computer controlled machines and cognitive robots and assimilate them through various stages.

Eriez HydroFloat(TM) separators and Canadian Process Technologies (CPT) flotation columns have been developed to overcome the limitations of traditional flotation cells in recovering coarse and fine particles, respectively. The flotation column can effectively separate 30-5 µm phosphate. Several industrial-scale HydroFloat separators have been installed in phosphate and potash beneficiation plants. Industrial-scale ultra-coarse (+850 µm) phosphate separation results suggest that a more-than 40% BonePhosphate- of-Lime (BPL) recovery increase and a 37% collector consumption reduction can be achieved. The paper describes the applications of Eriez HydroFloat separators to coarse particle separation and the CPT flotation column to fine/ultrafine particle flotation.

"Copper containing different types of nanocomposites have been characterized for nanolabelling and ID. Three types of the rare earth nanoparticles were used for this study, the oxide and the sulphur compound of the Eu and Tb. Characterization techniques uses SEM, and Raman for morphology, chemical composition, and optical characterization respectively. It has been shown that it is possible to include the rare earth particle in a copper matrix without damaging its physical properties. INTRODUCTIONThe development of new materials, often involves the addition of new properties without changing the beneficial properties of the original material (Chen et al., 2009; Khana et al., 2007; Patil et al., 2008). Nanocomposites are nanostructured materials, whose structural elements including clusters, crystallites or molecules, of dimensions ranging between 1 to 100 nm (Moriarty, 2001), or a composite material where one of the phases is a one, two or three dimensionally nanostructured material (Nanotechnology, 2006; Wang, 2001). Nanocomposite materials research is a fast growing area due to the high demand for materials for specialized applications (Edelstein & Cammarata, 1998), such as biolabelling, magnetic storage media, solar energy transformation (Jisen et al., 2004), and resistance welding applications (Bessergenev et al., 1997; Kwon et al.,2006).The properties of the nanocomposite materials depend not only on the properties of their individual parent materials, but also on their morphology and the interfacial characteristics. Thus, significant efforts have been focused on the control of the nanoscale structures via innovative synthesis approaches. Therefore, novel materials of unique properties may be obtained by combining properties from the parent constituents into a single material (Balan, 2006; Garcia et al., 2009). Possible effects of nanocomposites in the original material may include changes in the mechanical properties such as hardness , wear resistance (Rafaja et al., 1987), and electrical properties (Britton et al., 2003). The inclusion process may therefore be used to tailor materials to have particular mechanical, electrical and optical properties (Das et al., 2009). However, to fully understand the nanocomposite, it is necessary to study the fundamental properties of both the host matrix and the inclusions (Li, 2008)."

"A key element for a successful mining operation is the grinding circuit. It must be reliable, maintainable and must perform to or above design capacities for 95% of the time. Once chosen and installed major modifications are either prohibitive or very expensive. The selection of mills and drive system is probably the single most important decision made within the concentrator complex.Economic studies revealed that the optimum expansion for Lornex was a 68070 increase in plant throughput. This indicated that the new mill would have to be larger than the existing 32-foot mills.The Lornex ore has a wide range of hardness which has a great influence on mill throughput (Table 1). To smooth out the fluctuations, a blending program ha s always been in effect at the mine, coupled with ball charge control for the primary mills. As can be appreciated, an optimum balance is difficult to achieve. A sudden change to so ft ore with a high ball charge puts the mill into jeopardy with a constant speed drive.The blending philosophy would continue after the expansion, but with the addition o f a second primary crusher, it was envisaged to have the new mill process harder ore to maintain production targets. In theory, the new mill would have a proportionally larger ball charge than the existing mills.This scheme makes the new mill vulnerable for processing so ft ore for a fixed speed mill. Thus, variable speed seemed an attractive option.In early 1979 prominent mill manufacturers were invited to submit proposals for the new mill. Fixed and variable speed mills were to be considered with mill size ranging from 32-foot to 36-foot diameter. The proposals were to include the drive, ball charge, % critical speed, couplings, gears, etc. - the complete package. The recommendations were variable with most manufacturers submitting several alternatives. Recommended mill speed varied from 68% to 78% critical. The concept of variable speed was becoming more attractive, Lornex ultimately decided on a twin DC motor drive system for a 34-foot diameter mill.After start-up it was discovered that best throughput occurred at 78% mill critical speed or top speed of the drive motors. The motor speed range was adjusted upward from 186 to 200 rpm. Today the mills operate at 79% critical or a motor speed o f 193.5 rpm.Clearly the selection of the variable speed mill allowed the flexibility to optimize throughput."

It is appropriate to set out a few of the more significant objective of an: accounting system: (1) The provision of historical data <•concerning past events, for the information of shareholders, tax authorities, etc. This data can also be used as a tool to predict the future. (2) The provision of a record to safeguard the company's assets and to form the basis of any claim for insurance or other damages. (3) The provision of an accounting framework in making an economic study of a proposed course of future action such as the development of an orebody or the outlay of a substantial sum for new equipment. Although Canadian bentonite is competitive in quality for most uses, it has not been accepted for the pelletizing of iron ore concentrates. In 1962, Canada consumed about 10,000 tons of imported bentonite for this use. By the end of 1965, the planned domestic consumption for this purpose alone will probably be more than 100,000 tons a year, valued at about $3 million. Consequently, a challenge exists for the establishment of a Canadian source of high-quality bentonite for pelletizing. Such a bentonite would also be suitable for the two other major applications -well drilling and foundry use. Brief mention is made of such topics as the identification, 1noperties, occurrences, exploration, applications, technology and laboratory testing of this clay. In particular, the type of bentonite in demand, the geological horizons warranting exploration, and simple preliminary test methods are discussed.

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOCC} has mined and processed an iron deposit in Western Labrador along the Labrador-Quebec border since the early 1960' s. Current capacity is approximately 19 million tonnes of concentrate, 70% of which is converted to pellets at these facilities.The ore deposits are located in hills rising 150 to 300 meters above the adjacent lakes, and most of them are covered by very little overburden. The iron minerals are mainly specular hematite and magnetite hosted in a quartz formation. Crude ore averages 40% Fe that is concentrated to 65.5% Fe. IOCC is an extensive operation extending from Labrador City NF to Sept-Iles Quebec. It consists of open pit mining, concentrating, pelletizing, railway, and dock loading facilities.The Concentrator liberates iron from the silica by crushing and grinding the ore to -14 mesh (-1190 microns}. Ground ore is concentrated in spirals and filtered for transportation. Spiral tailings are treated in a Magnetic Recovery Plant (Mag Plant} that recovers lost magnetite. Mag Plant tailings are treated in a Hematite Spiral Plant (Hem Plant} that scavenges fine iron remaining in this stream.This report deals with ongoing iron recovery initiatives within the ConcentratorIron Losses in the ConcentratorIron recovery at IOCC is approximately 70.5%. This compares with recoveries that range from 65% to 86% for other iron mines in our area. Other world large iron ore producers dig and ship concentrate quality ore directly out of the ground and have an effective recovery of 100%. With increasing costs for labour, equipment, and supplies an increase in iron recovery is required to keep the operation viable.More than 90% of our iron concentrate is produced by gravity separation using spirals. The physical characteristics of the iron minerals that most effect recovery are mineral grain size and degree of liberation. We divide ground ore into three size categories -coarse, intermediate, and fines. A brief description of each size fraction follows:"
