"INTRODUCTION The Holt-McDermott Mine is wholly-owned gold mining operation of American Barrick Resources Corp. that begun operations in June 1988.The property is located 0.5 km. south of Highway 101 East in the Harker-Holloway Townships of Northeastern Ontario, 7 miles south of Lake Abitibi and 15 miles west of the Quebec-Ontario border.Employees of the operation travel daily from various communities in the area, predominantly from Kirkland Lake, Ont., which is located 65 km. to the southwest.The significance of the operation is that it is the first full scale operation associated to the Oestor-Porcupine Fault to go into full production in recent history as well as the first Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) operation in the province owing to the natural occurring carbonaceous ores that are associated to the ore body and the geological fault systems.GEOLOGYThe Holt-McDermott deposit is located in the Abitibi Greenstone Belt, a short distance west of the Ontario-Quebec border. Ore grade material follows the footwall contact of a fault zone known locally as the McKenna Fault, which is thought to be a splay off of the Oestor-Porcupine Fault, itself a major feature in the Abitibi belt.The McKenna Fault strikes approximately east-west (as does the Oestor-Porcupine) and dips to the south at sixty-five to seventy degrees. The fault lies within a package of mafic volcanic rocks (basalts). These rocks have been strongly altered and mineralized adjacent to the McKenna Fault, and the resulting lens-like ore bodies constitute the mining targets."

The adsorption capacity of peat collected from a proposed mine development in northern Sweden has been determined using laboratory column experiments in which peat was irrigated with a simulated (acidic) waste rock dump leachate. The simulated leachate was made using a hydrogen peroxide leach of composite waste rock from the proposed mine development. The waste rock samples were composited in proportion to their predicted extractable tonnage for the mine development in order to generate a more representative leachate solution for the waste rock facility. As expected the test revealed that the peat material shows a very high affinity for attenuation with greater than 70% of Co, 90% of Ni and 95% of Cu removed from influent solutions through the majority of the tests demonstrating the potential benefits in mine water treatment. In contrast, it was found that Fe is initially released from the peat at concentrations up to 100 mg/L and can mean potential problems for the water released depending on the receiving environment. The exact mechanisms for Fe release is uncertain, though it is suspected that ion exchange / competitive desorption is responsible. Inspection of the laboratory results and drainage data from the natural peat wetland receiving drainage during overburden prestriping and mine development at the mine site are comparable, confirm the validity of the experiments, and further emphasize the potential for future use of pre-stripped peat material in managing water quality.

Synergies between copper and lead extractive metallurgical processes enable the processing of a broad range of polymetallic materials. However, this complexity also brings some challenges expressed in terms of complex intermediates and final products. For instance, based on the limited solubility of Cu and Ni in crude lead bullion additional phases will appear during the crystallization of the melt. Beyond the need for continuous optimization of metallurgy the control of phase solidification is a further important pillar to achieve a more efficient process by minimizing the amount and cycles of reverts. This paper describes the microscopy study of one of the most relevant intermediate in the Cu and Pb metallurgy, the Cu based alloy and highlights the importance of applying a well-controlled cooling sequence to improve the overall process efficiency. INTRODUCTION One of the key aspects in Aurubis’s 2025 vision is to move towards the implementation of a multi metal recovery strategy. The implementation of this new multi metal vision is supported by the long tradition of the company, founded in 1866 as Norddeutsche Affinerie, and further developed by adopting modern copper smelting and lead smelting technologies for the processing of primary and secondary materials. The combination of these assets have already build the basis for processing of complex materials in the copper and lead circuits implemented in Aurubis’s facilities. The addition of a new smelting facility, will enhance these capabilities. Aurubis current flowsheet combines Cu, Pb and Zn metallurgy. This includes primary smelting of copper concentrate, processing of secondaries (residues, slimes, slags) and recycling materials (scrap, shredder material, e-scrap). These broad range of materials contain not only the mentioned base metals but also a number of minor metals that requires to be properly managed to ensure efficient recoveries and quality of the targeted metals.

"1.1 Location and Transportation ServicesNanisivik Mines Ltd. is located at latitude 73°, 3,200 km north of Montreal and 700 km north of the Arctic circle, on the south side of Strathcona Sound, which is an arm of Admiralty Inlet, in Northern Baffin Island. The orebody and mill site are 4 km distant from Strathcona Sound which provides deep water anchorage for ocean transportation of concentrate to Europe during the short northern shipping season from mid-July to mid-October.The operations and the resident community have direct jet aircraft service from Montreal two days per week, and local nights connect with other Arctic communities in the northern Baffin region. Bulk supplies and general cargo are delivered in the summer shipping season.1.2 HistoryThe Texas Gulf Sulphur Company, now Kidd Creek Mines Limited, staked claims in the Nanisivik area in 1957 and carried out exploration through to 1968. After the Kidd Creek orebody was found, Texas Gulf optioned the property in 1972 to Mineral Resources International Inc. (MRI), which undertook further exploration and completed a feasibility study.Nanisivik Mines Ltd. was formed in 1975, with MRI as the majority shareholder and minority shareholdings held by Metallgesellschaft, Billiton and Texas Gulf. Strathcona Mineral Services Limited was retained to manage the project during both the construction and operational phases."

The Mobrun VMS deposit in northwestern Quebec does not fit the classic Noranda type model, but exhibits characteristics more consistent with a Mattabi-type deposit. The orebodies are underlain by fragmental volcanic rocks indicative of explosive volcanism in shallow water. Felsic volcanic rocks are more abundant than mafic rocks. Alteration assemblages comprise chlorite, carbonate, sericite, and quartz. Broad semi-conformable alteration occurs high in the footwall to the 1100 lens. Mobrun occurs higher in the stratigraphic sequence than most of the other deposits in the Noranda camp. In this part of the stratigraphy, zones of pervasive carbonatization may be more useful guides for exploration than zones of silicification.

ABSTRACT: A prototype test dipper (at 1/20th volume and a geometric operating scale of 2.85) was compared during field trials against a conventional dipper with the same tare weight using the same test shovel. Both dippers followed similar dig trajectories, invoked by the shovel operator. A Microsoft® Visual Basic-embedded spreadsheet was used to interpret qualitative visual and quantitative numerical loading data collected on the hoist and crowd dig response. Overall the concept dipper, even with a 50% greater capacity, provided indications of a smoother dig cycle with lower peak hoist loading events and a lower energy per unit excavated.

Today road construction sites utilize more and more information modeling in design phases as well as model based 3-D machine control systems in site operations. For main contractor, the management and control of all the site operations is a demanding task including also many challenges created by continuously developing new technology. In the paper, the main requirements for successful dynamic site management are introduced. The dynamic management means real-time possibilities for information acquiring, transfer and further utilization of the information in the management. An integration model to expand the current way of management and the utilization of present 3-D machine control systems is introduced. Different practical test results using two new different dynamic management systems are presented and evaluated. The first experiments and the results have been provided using the prototype system developed in a research project called DigiINFRA by the University of Oulu and Technical Research Center of Finland. Also, there have been tested a new commercial management system developed recently in Finland. In the conclusion, an expectation for the next generation for more dynamic road construction management methods is concluded.

"The Steep Rock iron mine is 141 miles west of Port Arthur, Ontario, and 50 air miles north of the Vermilion iron range in Minnesota. The property lies 27'2 miles north of the village of Atikokan on the south line of the Canadian National railway.The orebodies underlying the bed of Steeprock lake, since de-watered, were known to exist 60 years ago. References to the possibility of iron ore at this location were made in early geological papers and reports. In 1937 the locations of the orebodies were determined by dip-needle surveys, and from 1938 until 1943 diamond and churn drilling were carried on to prove their extent and configuration. It was found that the ore, in addition to being associated with definite types of wall-rock, was controlled by structural features, such as faulting and brecciation. From this geological knowledge the presence of other deposits has been inferred, and these are now being explored and developed.Production at the property commenced in October 1944. During that season 17,000 gross tons of ore was shipped. In 1945, 506,000 gross tons and in 1946, 830,000 gross tons was mined and shipped. In 1946, 164,000 gross tons additional was placed on stockpile for future shipment.TYPES OF 0REBODIES AND MINERALIZATIONThe orebodies at Steep Rock iron mine are tabular. They have an average width of 250 feet, lengths up to 5,000 feet, and persist to known depths of 1,200 feet. They are replacement deposits in brecciated carbonate rock at the contact of underlying pseudo-limestones and overlying volcanics. The ore is composed of hematite and hydrous hematite in the form of goethite, turgite, and limonite. These minerals replaced the brecciated host rocks metasomatically as a result of hydrothermal action. The replacement followed a definite structural pattern along the unconformable contact between the sediments or other rock (now replaced by carbonate) and the volcanics, subsequent to disturbances in the form of minor faulting and shearing. The faulting and shearing provided the channels through which the replacing solutions percolated. It is believed that the late basic intrusions outside the ore zones were genetically responsible for the introduction of the ore-bearing solutions."

"This paper focusses on the strength or capacity of cable bolts and introduces a new perspective for cable bolt design by demonstrating that mining-induced stress changes may affect cables in a detrimental manner. The concept underlying a novel cable bolt pull-out resistanceor bond capacity model is described and its practical significance is demonstrated by application to a simple two dimensional scenario of a fall-of-ground.A number of practical implications emerging from the application of this model are discussed to provide guidance to ground control personnel jar improving cable bolt support systems in mining applications. These include cable layout optimization, use of cable pre-reinforcements, assessment of embedment length requirements, need for plated cables (or straps), use of bird-caged cables (or buttons), and grout quality issues.IntroductionDuring the last decade, cable bolting has become a standard support technique in mining for handling wide spans, reinforcing are passes, preventing or reducing dilution of ore in marginally stable stopes, and for many other rock support need s.In its infancy, many deficiencies in cable bolt supports resulted from improper installation techniques and, in particular, grout quality control problems and the use of empty breather tubes (Goris, 1990). The development of special grout pumps and fail proof placement procedures (Oliver, 1992; Bourchier and O'Flaherty, 1992) have eliminated many of these early problems. Nevertheless, there are still situations where cables seem to lose their capacity during mining, and in these cases the cables do not provide the expected and needed ground support. In some instances, cables perform extremely well, whereas in others the same support layout and quality of support installation seem to be insufficient, allowing falls-of-ground or progressive cavings to occur."

"Stress strain curves characteristics, deformation and strength properties, and failure process and characteristics of sandstone samples under different stress states were analyzed through triaxial compression tests carried on using TAW-2000 microcomputer control electro-hydraulic servo rock triaxial test system. The experimental results reveal that peak strength, residual strength, elasticity modulus and deformation modulus increase linearly with confining pressure, and failure models transform from fragile failure under low confining pressure to ductility failure under high confining pressure. Macroscopic failure forms of samples under uniaxial compression was split failure paralleling to the axis of samples, while macroscopic failure forms under uniaxial compression was shear failure, the shear failure angle of which decreased linearly with confining pressure. There were significant volume dilatation properties in the loading process of sandstone under different confining pressure, and then based on acoustic emission damage and volumetric dilatation damage the damage evolution properties of samples were analyzed, and damage constitutive model were established, realizing the real-time quantitative evaluation of samples damage state in loading process. INTRODUCTIONDamage is a phenomenon that micro defects in material under monotonic loading or reloading will lead to progressive decrease of the cohesion and damage of volume units. Many scholars at home and abroad have carried out systematic researchers on damage evolution characteristics and constitutive model of rock, and have achieved a series of remarkable results in this field. Lu Y.D. (2004) studied the complete stress-strain curve’s characteristics of marble under triaxial compression, and established the bilinear elastic-linear strain softening-residual ideal plastic damage constitutive model. Ren J.X. (2001) studied the damage evolution laws of coal and rock mass by computerized tomography triaxial loading system, realizing the quantitative evaluation of damage state. Zhang Z.L. (2011) studied the deformation and failure mechanism of strong weathered sandstone by triaxial compression test, and analyzed the damage evolution processes and established the damage evolution equations based on the density method. Li X.J. (2012) studied the microscopic damage characteristics of siltstone under triaxial compression by scanning electron microscope and digital image technology, and analyzed the statistical distribution characteristics of cracks azimuth angle, length, width. Zhou J.W. (2012) studied the strength, deformation and fracture damage characteristics of sandstone by uniaxial cyclic loading and unloading tests, and defined damage variable based on linear damage mechanics theory and acoustic emission (AE). Cao W.G. (2006) established a new damage model and a statistical damage constitutive model of rock under specific confining pressure according to the force of damaged part and undamaged part in rock on the base of statistical damage theory. Li S.C. (2014) studied the damage evolution characteristics in the whole uniaxial compression process of sandstone by electrical resistivity and AE, and proposed a status qualitative criterion for rock damage."

"Red Dog is one of the largest zinc mines in the world both in terms of reserves and annual production. In 2013, Red Dog produced 551,300 mt of contained zinc and 96,700 mt of contained lead. The mine, which is located in Northwest Alaska, is a partnership between Teck Alaska Incorporated, the operator of the mine and NANA Regional Corporation Inc, the local land owner. The Aqqaluk deposit, which is the current source of ore, has an average grade of 15.8% Zn, 4.1% Pb and 73 g/t Ag with the main minerals being sphalerite, galena, pyrite, barite and quartz. Surveys of the zinc flotation circuit at Red Dog identified that a substantial amount of fully liberated, sub 20 micron sphalerite particles were being lost to final tailings. As a means of improving fine sphalerite recovery, a four month plant trial of magnetic conditioning was conducted in the zinc retreat circuit. Magnetic conditioning technology has already been commissioned in several concentrators around the world to agglomerate fine paramagnetic minerals, increasing their probability of bubble collision and recovery in a flotation cell. The results of the four month plant trial at Red Dog showed that at a high level of confidence, a 1% increase in zinc recovery or zinc recovery and zinc concentrate grade combined was achieved with magnetic conditioning. The resulting economic benefit, which is also at a high level of confidence, is significant to Red Dog and therefore, magnetic conditioning has been permanently incorporated into the Red Dog zinc flotation circuit.IntroductionRed Dog is the largest zinc mine in North America and represents approximately 29% of North American zinc concentrate production. The mine is located in northwest Alaska, approximately 100 miles north of the Arctic Circle and 50 miles inland from the Chukchi Sea. Wire Bonding is the dominant IC interconnection process presently used in the semiconductor assembly industry (1). The flexibility, adaptability and cost of wire bonding will continue to keep it as the key process for the interconnection of integrated circuits to substrates. However, wire bonding still has certain technological hurdles to overcome if it is to continue following the semiconductor roadmap (2). Particular issues which need to be addressed include low overall tensile strength, low elastic modulus, low shear per unit area and mechanical loop stability of Gold based micro-alloys. The ability to produce ?Deformation Process Metal-Metal Matrix Composites? (DMMCs) is based upon the deformation nature of immissible metallic systems. For reference, the Gold (Au)-Molybdenum (Mo) phase diagram is shown in Figure 1 (3). By inspection of the diagram, Au has a very low solubility for Mo, while Mo has essentially no solubility for Au. This is the metallurgical analog of oil and water. In the Au-Mo case, this is particularly troublesome when producing precursor ingots of the alloy to be formed into wire products. In Table 1, the melting points and densities are shown for Au and Mo. As shown, the melting point of Mo is significantly higher than Au, and is very close to the boiling point of Au (2856°C). However, Au?s density is higher than that of Mo. As such, conventional casting techniques are not suitable, since solid Mo would float off the surface of an Au melt thus depleting the matrix of its alloy addition. In this work, two-phase composite wires were produced by deformation processing to develop an interconnection wire with elevated tensile strength, modulus and shear to those commonly available in the market (4). This technology has been used previously in the production of high strength electrical conductors particularly for high field pulsed magnets (5).

IN 1952, prompted by the great demand of the Canadian drilling and foundry industries for sodium bentonite, the Geological Department of Magnet Cove Barium Corporation, Limited began an extensive search for bentonite deposits throughout western Canada. Their efforts were rewarded in 1958, when substantial deposits of high quality material were found approximately 100 miles southeast of Edmonton, Alberta. The bentonite material, a part of the Edmonton formation in the Upper Cretaceous, is located approximately nine miles south of the town of Rosalind. The land where the bentonite lies has in places .been eroded by stream and glacial action to form a wide gully, convenient for strip mining methods (see Figure 1). The bentonite bed is almost flat-lying, dipping to the southwest at approximately 12 feet per mile. The main bed is 8 to. 10 feet thick and is covered with 15 to 25 feet of overburden. Before stripping, the area is drilled and sampled to evaluate the quantity and quality of the bentonite.

Zeta potentials and settling rates of an oil sands tailings sample taken from Syncrude Canada Ltd's Aurora Stacker Pilot Operation were studied. Two clay minerals, kaolinite and illite, were also studied since these are the major constituent minerals in the fine oil sands tailings. Process water, decanted water as well as distilled water were used. It was observed that the zeta potentials of the tailings solids showed maximum negative values in process water at pH 8-10, which coincides with the pH of commercial hot water bitumen extraction process. The settling rates of the tailings sample were very low, at 0.008 m/hr in decanted water and 0.04 m/hr in process water. The rates were increased to 1.0 m/hr in decanted water and 0.13 m/hr in process water at an addition of 50 g/t Ciba AF1235. Although the settling rate was higher the supernatant was cloudier in decanted water than in process water. Further increase in the dosages of Ciba AF1235 did not increase the settling rates in decanted water but gradually increased it in process water, reaching 0.46 m/hr at 100 g/t. The results indicated that lower concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2 (in decanted water) benefited settling rates but did not benefit supernatant clarity. Test results also indicated that Ciba AF1235 caused selective flocculation of the tailings sample, since the top sediments had higher illite and lower quartz contents than the bottom sediments.

The objective of this investigation was to determine how the losses of nickel, copper and cobalt in fayalite slags could be controlled for nickel mattes with iron contents below 5 wt%. Laboratory-converting and slag-cleaning experiments were carried out at 1250°C. Several variables were investigated during and after converting to help minimize the amount of nickel and cobalt that reports to the slag. The variables used were oxygen concentration in the blast, coke breeze addition and nitrogen injection stirring. In all the experiments, slag and matte co-existed. Coke additions during converting have little effect on the losses of nickel, copper and cobalt. In fact, coke additions retard the converting process by consuming some of the oxygen injected. On the other hand, coke additions and nitrogen injection applied after converting was completed resulted in decreased slag losses.

"The Red Lake Mine is situated in Balmer Township, Red Lake area in northwestern Ontario. It is an underground mine that has been in production since 1948. The property was originally known as the Dickensen Mine and was shut down in 1996.A feasibility study was carried out in 1998 and it was determined that a new mill should be constructed with a throughput rate of 600 stpd. The life-of-mine average gold grade was projected to be 1.35 oz/t with gold predominantly associated with arsenopyrite and pyrite. Metallurgical testwork indicated that the optimal flowsheet for gold recovery would include an autoclave for oxidation with a carbon circuit for adsorption. To limit capital cost and establish cashflow, the mill was constructed without an autoclave. The recovery by gravity and cyanidation was projected to be 83%. A flotation plant was constructed at the tail end of the circuit to recover the additional gold associated with sulphides from the leach circuit tailings. This material is being stockpiled onsite for future oxidation treatment.Detailed engineering was started in early 1999 and the first gold was poured in August 2000. One feature of the project was the use of Contact Lake equipment from Cameco’s Contact Lake project. The entire mill was purchased and equipment re-used where possible. The capital cost for the process facilities was C$3 1.5 million."

"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. It is currently recognized by mining society that autonomously guided underground mining vehicles may greatly increase the efficiency of mining production and improve human safety. Recent results in mobile robotics, data fusion and sensor development provide a solid basis for solving the problems related to autonomous underground navigation. Recently developed commercial systems mostly rely on the infrastructure that is expensive and difficult to maintain. Guideless navigation in unstructured and harsh environment of underground mines is still a challenging task. In this paper, we describe an autonomous navigation system for an underground mining vehicle equipped with on-board dead reckoning, inertial and optical sensors. This system does not require any artificial infrastructure and is capable to guide the vehicle along the complex environment of interconnected underground drifts; it also ensures the detection of obstacles on the vehicle path. The user interface for monitoring and control is described and the results of laboratory tests and on-site experiments are presented. Work in progress addresses the system integration for real equipment, and the system upgrade, adding map-building and selflocalization capabilities .

BHP Olympic Dam operates a Direct-to-Blister copper flash smelting Furnace (DBF) and an Electric Slag Cleaning Furnace (ESCF). Tapping blister copper from these furnaces via tapholes is a routine task carried out by trained personnel. Blister tapping is a high-risk activity with personnel operating in close proximity to molten metal. BHP’s risk management framework has identified taphole integrity as key to managing the potential for loss of molten metal containment and molten metal – water steam explosion, both of which have the potential to cause multiple fatalities. As part of the focus on managing this risk, since 2017, a dedicated Taphole Development Team has been embedded in the operation to run an accelerated improvement program focused on safely and sustainably embedding an improved taphole design with greater integrity. The program of works includes selecting and testing of new materials as well as improving operating discipline by collaborating with tapping personnel to convert their knowledge into codified condition monitoring and operating strategies. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is being used to derive critical risk controls, and to develop live-alerts to infer excessive refractory insert wear. To date, improving DBF blister taphole mudgun clay has led to more consistent drilling depths and subsequently reduced oxygen lancing requirements, resulting in improvements in taphole insert service life. On the ESCF, insert performance testing and development of a new taphole condition monitoring strategy, is being used to increase taphole insert tonnages to more sustainable levels. Operations personnel have been closely involved in different phases of the change management, this has led to standardization of tapping practices for both furnaces, and improved ownership of the proposed changes. The paper discusses the maturity in taphole integrity risk management as a result of recent and ongoing developments. It then provides an overview of future taphole developments proposed at Olympic Dam. INTRODUCTION Tapping operations at Olympic Dam and learning from significant events The Direct-to-Blister furnace (DBF) at Olympic Dam was built with a conventional design blister taphole, which was designed for manual oxygen lancing and clay stopper bar plugging tapping operations (Campbell, 2005). Manual tapping is a high-risk activity, where personnel work in close proximity to molten metal, and molten metal personal protective clothing and equipment must be used. Opening tapholes by oxygen lancing is a skilled activity and unintentional damage to the taphole inserts can occur. Since 2008, a Mudgun and Drill unit has been developed and trialled and is now in use on the DBF blister tapholes, to remove personnel from the line of fire when opening and closing tapholes. This has the additional benefit of reducing lancing damage to taphole inserts. A new taphole design labelled the Modular Blister Taphole (MBTH) was developed at Olympic Dam for the Mudgun and Drill operation. The intent of the design was for mudgun clay to fill the entire tapping channel when plugging after a tap. The drill would then drill through this clay plug to open the taphole.
