Black Thor chromite ore from the Ring of Fire deposit in Northern Ontario was carbothermically reduced in a microwave system to produce a ferrochromium alloy. The as-received ore contained 43.0% Cr2O3, 19.9% Fe2O3, 14.5% MgO, 13.4% Al2O3, and 7.0% SiO2. Activated charcoal was utilized as the reducing agent. Firstly, TGA/DTA and permittivity studies were carried out in order to determine the relationship between the reduction process and the microwave susceptibility. Secondly, microwave reduction experiments were performed on the chromite ore. The variables investigated were; the amount of carbon, processing time, input power and type of atmosphere. A maximum chromium grade of 76.1% and a chromium metallization of 82.7% were obtained for a processing time of 20 minutes, a power input of 800 W, and a carbon addition of 15% in an argon atmosphere.

"As part of a series describing the nickel operations of Vale Canada (formerly known as Inco), this paper focuses on the 1973 to current operations of the Copper Cliff nickel refinery in Ontario, Canada. The process used there employs the formation of Ni tetracarbonyl at high CO (gas) pressure and its subsequent decomposition at somewhat elevated temperatures to produce highly pure Ni pellets and powders. Personal sampling of workplace aerosol dusts is reported, with information on specific Ni compounds in the aerosols.RÉSUMÉ Dans le cadre de la série d’articles décrivant les opérations de nickel chez Vale Canada (anciennement Inco), le présent article cible les opérations de 1973 à ce jour à l’affinerie de nickel de Copper Cliff en Ontario, Canada. Le procédé utilisé à cette usine est la formation de tétracarbonylnickel sous une pression élevée de CO (gaz) et sa décomposition subséquente à des températures plutôt élevées pour produire des granules et des poudres de Ni pur. Un échantillonnage par l’auteur des poussières en aérosol est présenté ainsi que de l’information sur les composés spécifiques de Ni dans les aérosols."

Canada?s energy future will increasingly depend on a supply of light, sweet crude oil derived from the Athabasca oil sands deposit of North-eastern Alberta. Billions of dollars are being spent on the construction of new and expanded mine and bitumen extraction plants, in situ recovery facilities, pipelines, upgrading installations and all the infrastructure needed to support these projects. The success of the existing operators has also inspired new players, anxious for ?a piece of the action? to come forward with exciting project proposals of their own. None of this investment and spin-off economic activity would be taking place today if events had unfolded differently in this part of the world some one hundred million years ago. The accumulation of sand in rivers, estuaries and in the near-shore marine environment created the great reservoirs that host the enormous oil deposits these projects are designed to exploit. Mine operators of all stripes will likely agree that there are few good ?geological surprises?. With specific reference to oil sand deposits, the geological history determines the distribution of sand, silt and clay bodies, which in turn controls the ore grade. Important design factors including everything from stable pit slope angles to tailings properties reflects events that took place millions of years before. An understanding of the sequence of events that resulted in deposition and preservation of the sediment and oil are important to sound design for both mining and in situ facilities. A geological history of the region is described. Site-specific examples from Syncrude?s operating mines are used to illustrate some of the geological factors that can present design challenges.

"The practical determination of optimum stope geometry has, until recently, been an art relying primarily on experience at a given operation. Due to the complex and variable nature of rock masses in situ, stopes are often designed either very conservatively, resulting in excess development, or non-conservative resulting in excessive dilution and, in some cases, in loss of ore reserves.The Geomechanics group of the Mining Technology Division, Centre de Recherche Noranda, uses a combination numerical modelling and empirical design techniques to optimize allowable stope geometries. The above methodology allows the optim ization of stope geometry for varying rockmass classifications within an operation or between different operations. Such techniques require the development of a thorough geotechnical database at each operation and are best used when calibrated to the specific operation through back analysis.This paper discusses the above optimization techniques in light of specific examples from the Noranda Group. The design methods, limitations and results are discussed.INTRODUCTIONMine design has traditionally referred to production planning, general facility layout, (i.e. ore passes, crusher stations, main haulage drifts, etc.) and ventilation design. The dimensioning and sequencing of the stopes and pillars, however, has been almost solely based on trial and error and precedent practice.More recently, numerical stress analysis has received much more attention as part of the design process. It is common now at many operations to look at the effect of proposed stope layouts and sequences on stress redistribution through the surrounding mine workings. Through calibration of actual stope and pillar behaviour in situ, one can then relate the model predictions to support requirements, safety problems, etc."

It?s a pleasure to be with you in Vancouver today to reinforce the good work you and your companies do to develop and operationalize new technology as a lever to improve operational performance and reduce our impact on the environment in absolute terms. Although I will use the work we do at Shell to reinforce this perspective, the principles apply to all of us in this industry regardless of whether you are a producer or supplier. I?d like to help demystify the future of Canada?s oil sands based on Shell?s view of global energy developments, including forecasted demand. One of the incontrovertible truths of this era of global energy defines change as an unchangeable law of progress. Another tells us that the art of progress is to preserve order amid change and to preserve change amid order. These axioms help frame the increasingly public debate about the future of Canada?s oil sands. I hope to illustrate how Shell?s commitment and investments create positive progress that embraces change amid order in the oil sands. I?m going to spend a little time today to focus the spotlight on the future of the oil sands to help demystify Canada?s hydrocarbon energy future. To do that, I?ll identify the features of our future energy security, including three hard truths about global energy that drive Shell?s business imperatives. Then, it?s instructive to examine Canadians? current consciousness about oil sands sustainability.

Cependant, plusieurs carences persistent en matière d’opérationnalisation du concept de développement durable. Ce défi met en cause la responsabilité partagée entre les parties prenantes. Il exige le renforcement des responsabilités gouvernementales et l’instrumentalisation de bonnes pratiques de responsabilité sociale des entreprises. En aval, s’impose la gestion intégrée de l’usage des produits miniers et la promotion de l’innovation et de la recherche.ABSTRACT Conciliation between expansion of the mining industry and sustainable development requirements represents a great challenge. With regards to the various controversies touching this industry, the last decade was marked by a great mobilisation phase of all stakeholders. However, there are still many shortcomings regarding operationalization of the sustainable development concept. This challenge involves shared responsibility between the stakeholders. It requires strengthening government accountability and instrumentalization of good corporate social responsibility practices. Further down the chain, the use of mining products and the promotion of innovation and research must be achieved through integrated management."

Towards the goal of a better understanding of the structure-proton conductivity relationship in PEM materials, this project concerns the design of ordered polymeric solids containing well-defined sulfonate aggregates. The approach employed involves the templation of sulfonated monomers using core principles of crystal engineering. In addition to sulfonate groups, the monomeric units contain crosslinkable functionalities to enable formation of a covalently linked network. The templation strongly directs the construction of well-defined sulfonate clusters and aggregates. Structural, sorption and conductivity data for the networks will be shown.

During the period May 15 ? 17, 2006 four fatalities occurred at #1 Waste Dump, at Teck Cominco?s Sullivan mine located at the city boundary of Kimberley, British Columbia, Canada. The fatalities occurred in the sump of a water monitoring station. The Chief Inspector of Mines and his staff immediately responded to the incident. The team worked collaboratively with the Teck Ltd. Trail Hazmat team, a consultant group from Rescan Ltd. and other Teck operation and technical staff. Sampling in and around the water monitoring station in the days following the fatalities showed that exposure to a depleted oxygen environment was the immediate cause of the fatalities. The sump located at the base of the shed was hydraulically connected to a French (coarse rock) drain, located at the toe of the covered waste dump. This presentation will briefly review the immediate cause of the accident, the investigation, a brief introduction to the work of the Sullivan Technical panel and the British Columbia government?s response to the incident and the recommendations of the Coroner?s inquest.

The pressure oxidation (POX) and pyrometallurgical process comprises POX of gold containing sulfide and polymetallic lead-zinc concentrates prior to reduction smelting of POX products to generate a lead-silver-gold alloy. Refined lead and gold-silver alloys are then obtained using conventional processes. Zinc and other base metals are recovered from the POX solution. In the course of POX, zinc dissolves in the solution and lead concentrates in a solid residue in the form of sulfate compounds. Sulfur forms the major iron sulfates and jarosites. In order to dissolve sulfur and arsenic from solid residues to the solution, the slurry hot curing was carried out at the temperature of 95°C within 2 hours. After filtration of the slurry, zinc was recovered from the solution. The resulting cake was washed with water and subjected to hot alkaline treatment. After alkaline treatment, the cakes were blended with fluxes and subjected to reduction smelting to generate lead concentrate containing precious metals. This concentrate was refined to obtain refined lead and gold-silver alloy. After iron and arsenic were removed from POX solutions using sodium carbonate, zinc was precipitated as carbonate. After thickening and filtration, zinc precipitate was roasted to generate saleable zinc oxide. Using this process, the recoveries of values to saleable products were 97% Au and 95% Ag to the alloy, respectively, 91% Pb to refined lead and 5% Pb to lead and antimony alloy and 94% Zn to zinc concentrate. The features of the technology is that it has high recovery indices of precious and base metals to saleable products and can be used to process various polymetallic ore and technogenic raw materials.

"Abstract - We present a new approach for the evaluation of the potential of emerald reserves in gem projects using beryllium (Be) mobility. The distribution of Be in the different phases of hydrothermally altered (albitized) black shale hosting Colombian emerald deposits indicates that Be mobility is associated with the breakdown of Fe-Mn oxyhydroxide phases. The amount of Be that can be mobilized (~0.7 x 10-6 g/g; i.e., 0.7 ppm) may represent up to 18 wt% of the total Be contained in the black shale. A mass balance calculation applied to a well-constrained alteration zone of the Chivor mines, and based on the quantification of Be that can be mobilized under hydrothermal conditions, gives an estimate of the total gem reserves of these mines. Resumé - Une nouvelle approche, basée sur la mobilité du béryllium (Be) pour l’évaluation des réserves d’émeraude dans des projets d’exploitation de gemmes est présentée. La distribution du Be dans les différentes phases minérales de schistes noirs hydrothermalisés (albitisés) qui contiennent les gisements d’émeraude colombiens, indique que le Be mobilisable se trouve dans les oxyhydroxydes de fer et de manganèse. Les aspects environnementaux des activités minières d?exploitation réalisées sur le territoire québécois sont encadrés par divers cadres légaux, réglementaires ou autres (directive, politique, guide) tant au niveau provincial que fédéral. Ces cadres s?appliquent à l?un ou l?autre des trois grandes étapes du projet, soit lors de l?étude d?avant projet, pendant l?exploitation ou à la cessation des activités d?exploitation. Comme la réglementation environnementale est de plus en plus nombreuse, ces dernières années, cette présentation vise à exposer les principaux cadres provinciaux et fédéraux actuellement en application au Québec pour le secteur minier et à en dégager les particularités. ABSTRACT The environmental aspects of mining activities carried out across Quebec fall within the scope of various legal, prescribed or other frameworks (directives, policies, guides) at provincial and federal levels. These frameworks apply to one or another of the three major steps of a project: preliminary design, mining and closure. As the number of environmental regulations has greatly increased during the past few years, the object of this presentation is to state the main provincial and federal frameworks currently applicable in Quebec for the mining sector and to identify their special features.

Dissociative adsorption of hydrogen (deuterium) on thin gold films grown on Ir{111} surface has been studied with temperature-programmed desorption using a quadrupole mass spectrometer and nuclear reaction analysis. Thin Au{111} films are epitaxially grown on Ir{111}. Surprisingly, H2 (D2) can dissociatively adsorb on these Au{111} films, although it is well known that Au surfaces are noble enough not to dissociate hydrogen molecules [B. Hammer and J.K. Nørskov, Nature 376, (1995) 238]. We attribute this to the sensitivity of hydrogen to changes in the local surface properties, e.g., electron localization (the narrowing of the s-band, the s-band center model), which could explain the upto now unexpected high for the reactivity of a thin Au{111} surface. Moreover, we found that H (D) atoms can be confined into a Au thin film and/or the interface between an Ir surface and the thin Au film. We demonstrate how anomalously reactive thin Au films grown on an Ir surface are, and also compare the Au films with Ag films grown on Ir to test the validity/generality of our proposed s-band center model.
