Different gas purging methods to metallurgical baths have been applied to date, among which are top lancing and bottom blowing through tuyeres or porous plugs. Among these, the porous plug bottom blowing technique has shown higher efficiency in gas utilization than tuyeres and top blowing, due to smaller bubble size and lower liquid velocity. However, the studies related to bottom stirring of metallurgical baths are limited to slag-less or thin slag-covered melts. In particular, there is no examination of stirring ability in conditions similar to Falconbridge's Slag Make Converter, where the bath is covered with a thick slag layer and a stream of solids is charged on the bath from top. This study was undertaken to investigate the application of gas purging through a porous plug in stirring in and melting of the solid feeds. The spreading behaviour and melting time of a solid layer forming on a plume created by stirring were calculated using the existing models. The results show that formation of a thick solid layer, specifically in areas beyond the plume region is very likely. Nevertheless, the thickness of the layer and melting time do not appear unreasonably high. It is predicted that by proper controlling of gas flowrate and plug configurations, successful solid charging through the mouth can be practiced.

The Hoyle Pond underground mine, located in the Porcupine Gold Camp, east of the city of Timmins, Ontario, Canada, is the cornerstone of Goldcorp Canada Ltd?s Porcupine Gold Mines. Cut and fill, shrinkage, longhole and panel mining methods are employed to excavate the narrow gold bearing structures. In order to meet increased flow requirements of 256 m3/s at the mine, a new Fresh Air Raise (FAR) and new surface fans were commissioned in early 2005. The newly acquired fans were capable of supplying the desired volume of air within a range of 1.5 and 2.0 kPa. Upon commissioning of the surface fans the total pressure was found to be exceedingly high; far beyond the design capabilities of the new installation. Consequently only one surface fan could be operated at any given time providing about half the required volume of air. Extensive work was immediately started aimed at reducing the system resistance in order to permit operation of the two fans in parallel and achieve the required mine flows. Larger booster fans were installed in parallel at the 900 m level, a 3 m raise bore linking the 450 and 900 m levels was developed to twin the existing fresh air circuit, and the FAR from surface to the 450 m level was twinned with the original FAR. This strategy, completed in 2012, resulted in a drastic reduction in system resistance and pressures, allowing the two surface fresh air fans to be safely operated in parallel and meeting the flow requirements. This paper describes details of the engineering design work and commissioning of the modified ventilation system, successfully ensuring the long term viability of the project.

Introduction In presenting this paper on the water-power resources of the Province of Manitoba, it was considered that a brief resume of the power resources of Canada, of the power already developed, and its utilization in the industries 9f the country, would be of particular interest in showing the rapid progress that has already been made. Amongst Canada's national assets, water power occupies a foremost place because of the facilities it provides for the development of her other great natural resources. The rapid development of the mining, pulp and paper, and general manufacturing industries, and the concomitant growth in urbanization, with its numerous demands for domestic, commercial, and municipal service power, have combined to stimulate hydraulic development to a point surpassing even the most sanguine predictions of a few years ago. With the bringing into operation during 1928 of hydraulic turbines aggregating over 550,300 h.p., and of a further 378,400 h.p. in 1929, Canada's total hydraulic development at the end of 1929 amounted to over 5,700,000 h.p., and in this year, 1930, the active construction in hydro-electric plants throughout the country totals in excess of 1,600,000 h .p.

Based on the deep burial depth of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields, Anhui Province, China, this paper puts forward the concept of partitioning of coal deposits according to occurrence conditions. This process is controlled by tectonic forces. The classification scheme of coal deposits exploration types is presented according to occurrence and mining conditions of coal deposits as viewed from the perspective of deep coal exploration properties. The principles underlying geological exploration services for the resources development are incorporated. There are six exploration types of coal deposits in the Huainan and Huaibei coalfields. Exploration models tailored to different types of exploration have been established and exploration strategies corresponding to different exploration models have been proposed. Steady-state temperature must be measured for the deep heat-harm type of coal deposit. The sealing coring of mine gas samples should be performed for the high mine gas type of coal deposit. For coal deposits with complex structures, such as those located beneath nappes, coal-controlling structural styles must be performed. Existing data on shallow districts are very important to the research of folds and fault-block types of coal deposits beneath and peripheral to old and existing coal mine areas. For the types of fault-block coal deposits hidden by thick Cenozoic cover, particular attention must be paid to comprehensive use of research on regional coal occurrence law and geophysical methods. The present work promotes the exploration level of coal deposits in Huainan-Huaibei coalfields to best meet the need for sustainable development of the coal industry.

"Stream-based microfluidic solvent extraction offers a novel alternative to bulk-scale mixer-settler operations. However present maximum throughputs are restrictive and there are engineering challenges that need to be overcome before the technology is robust. This is especially the case for mineral processing, where circuits must be able to handle variable feed streams with long retention times and where maintenance should be minimized. This paper highlights research directed at investigating and evaluating these challenges for actual mineral leach solutions of metal ions. Molecular and particulate channel fouling is discussed. Most extraction systems studied to date show no effects that would preclude use of the technology. For rare earth elements (REE) with fast extraction rates, scale-up of volumetric throughput to 100 L/h using suitable arrays of channels, microfluidic chips and modules is shown to be achievable using a small contactor (approx. 2 m3) platform. This requires only 2–3 % of the typical aqueous phase inventory and residence time used in an equivalent mixer-settler. For a circuit with 100 contactors, the overall residence time would be less than 1 h, using an aqueous inventory of 40 L.INTRODUCTIONHydrometallurgy is of pivotal importance in many mineral processing circuits around the world, with liquid-liquid solvent extraction (SX) a key step in the separation of many base metals (e.g. Cu and Ni), radioisotopes, precious metals, and the ‘technology’ metals, such as rare earth elements (REEs) (Ritcey & Ashbrook, 1979). The standard equipment for SX in mineral processing is the mixer-settler, in which liquid dispersions are created, by agitation, to increase the surface-to-bulk ratio and, thus increase the mass transfer rate between the liquid phases. In stream-based microfluidic SX (microSX), these high surface-to-volume ratios are achieved by contacting microscopic streams (Ciceri, Perera, & Stevens, 2014), rather than forming small droplets, so that phase disengagement can be accelerated (essentially instantaneous via branching of the two streams of liquid at a channel junction). MicroSX is profoundly different from bulk mixer-settler SX operations and offers exciting opportunities for processing hydrometallurgy solutions (Kriel, Holzner, Grant, Ash, Woollam, Ralston, & Priest, 2015; Priest, Zhou, Klink, Sedev, & Ralston, 2012). Nonetheless, the advantages of using microfluidic environments are presently balanced by very significant challenges relating to throughput, process control, coupling of stages, flow stability, and fouling. If these challenges can be met using smart chip designs, process control and clever engineering, high-value/low-volume SX processes stand to benefit greatly."

"THE HARDY MINE of Falconbridge Nickel Mines Limited is located in Lot 9, Concession 1, Levack Township, Sudbury District, Ontario, 20 miles northwest of the city of Sudbury, and a mile west of the town of Levack. The ore deposit is one of the many nickel-copper sulphide bodies found on, or near, the lower contact of the well-known Sudbury norite-micropegmatite irruptive, and is one of a family of ore deposits which occur on the northwest rim of the irruptive.The property was acquired by purchase in 1935. In the same year a magnetometer survey along the footwall contact of the norite, which is covered by about 150 feet of glacial sands and clays, first indicated the location of the orebody. Drilling from 1935 to 1942 outlined the extent of the ore. Shaft sinking was commenced in the fall of 1951, and the mine is now approaching full production at a rate of about 300,000 tons per year.There are several major differences between the geology of the Levack area and the Falcon bridge area, which lies at the opposite extremity of the irruptive, 28 miles to the east. The purpose of this paper is to describe the essential features of the geology of the Levack area as seen in the Hardy mine, and to supplement the recent papers on other properties in the Sudbury area by Davidson (1), Lochhead (2), and Yates (3).General GeologyA recent review of the regional geology and an extensive bibliography of the Sudbury area can be found in the two papers by H. The resource quantity of the low rank coalbed methane (CBM) accounts for 47% of the total resource quantity of CBM in China. Compared with the exploration and development of the high rank CBM in Qinshui Basin, China and the low rank CBM in Powder River Basin, USA and Albert Basin, Canada, the exploration and development of the low rank CBM are still in the initial test stage. In this paper, on the basis of analyzing the mining geological conditions such as that the Huanglong Jurassic Coalfield is largely situated in the hills and gullies zones, and the coal reservoir has the features such as the low metamorphic degree, large coal seam thickness, simple coal matrix texture, high permeability and small CBM content and so on, it discusses the key technologies such as the development pattern of CBM, well location arrangement, drilling and well completion technology and fracturing technology and so on. It indicates that the underbalanced drilling and the cavity well completion based on the reservoir protection will be the development directions of the CBM development technology in this area.

The levels of nitrogen in steel produced in various metallurgical vessels vary significantly. For example, the tap nitrogen levels in steel produced in the BOF are around 4Oppm, as compared to 70-100ppm in both DC and AC electric arc furnaces. Given the pressing need to reduce nitrogen levels in steel to satisfy customer demand, IPSCO Inc. has gained considerable experience in controlling nitrogen levels in steel over the course of the last three years. Hence, a cost effective process has been developed through an intensive nitrogen control program from steel melting in the EAF through to the continuous slab casting stage. This paper describes the practices employed at each stage of the steelmaking process that have enabled IPSCO Inc. to reduce and control nitrogen levels in steel.

During the last decade Antofagasta Minerals? Los Pelambres Mine has dramatically increased its ore throughput following the fast initial phase ramp up through a series of planned incremental expansions. The original 85,000 mtpd, two SAG line plant was commissioned in 1999 and rapidly exceeded nameplate tonnage in only a few months. Following this, the inclusion of a pebble crushing circuit resulted in throughputs in excess of 114,000 mtpd and a recent, final third line SAG and ball mill addition have taken the plant to over 175,000 mtpd even with increasing ore hardness and changing ore feed characteristics. The progressive changes are described in this paper together with how the technical challenges have been met.

An investigation into the leaching of chalcocite and covellite in cyanide solutions at concentrations typically encountered daring gold cyanidation has been conducted. The results indicate that, for both minerals, the extent of leaching is greater under anoxic conditions, but is still incomplete even in the presence of free cyanide ions, with undissolved copper solids remaining in equilibrium with solution species. The speciation of the sulfur and cyanide reaction products in solution are interpreted in terms of the fast formation of a copper(I)- cyanide complexes in solution and a sulfur-rich copper(I) polysulfide solid phase, which then reacts more slowly to produce thiocyanate ions.

"The general geology of the Great Bear Lake area has been described by; D. F. Kidd in the Summary Report of the Geological Survey for 1932. A brief description of the Eldorado mine was prepared by C. S. Lord for Memoir 230; Mineral Industry of the Northwest Territories; published by the Geological Survey in 1941. Recently; a detailed geological examination of the mine area has been initiated by the Geological Survey and; under A. W. Jolliffe's leadershif; J. D. Bateman; H. B. Thurber; and M. Feniak have prepared a number of maps and reports; as yet unpublished. Detailed mapping of the mine has been carried out since August; 1943; by A. W. Esty.Kidd has shown that, in the largely granitic country along the east side of Great Bear lake, the Echo Bay district is one of several underlain by older rocks . These he has divided into the Echo Bay and Cameron Bay groups. The former are strongly altered sediments, .porphyries, and lavas; the latter and younger group is predominantly sedimentary and far less altered. Associated with the granite, which everywhere intrudes the sediments and volcanics, are earlier differentiates. Later than all these rocks are various basic intrusives, collectively termed diabase. All the rocks are of Precambrian age."

"Hecla Limited’s No. 4 Shaft at the Lucky Friday Mine is the largest capital expenditure in the corporation’s 128-year history and is considered the deepest shaft in the United States. This paper will discuss the project’s history and lessons learned from the initial conceptual design work in 2007 through project commissioning in 2017. Change management was key for the owner, contractors, and vendors in delivering the operational and organizational success on the project. The No. 4 Shaft has extended the life of the Lucky Friday Mine by 21 years to 2039. INTRODUCTION The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Company (Figure 1) is the oldest active (77 years) and deepest mine in the Coeur d’Alene mining district, producing approximately 725 tonnes (800 tons) per day from narrow, vertical, silver, lead, and zinc veins. Primary access into the mine is via the Silver Shaft, a 5.5-m (18-ft) diameter, concrete lined shaft sunk to an original depth of 1,890-m (6,200-ft). Current production is from the Gold Hunter vein system, approximately 1,525-m (5,000-ft) northwest of the Silver Shaft.Cut and fill stoping is currently employed at depths to 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the deepest mines in the western hemisphere. No. 4 Shaft is a 5.5-metre (18-foot) diameter, concrete lined circular shaft, constructed as a 1.2 km (3,860 feet) deep winze in the Lucky Friday Mine. The 2.4 m (8 ft.) diameter, double drum, double clutch, Siemag hoist and associated headworks are situated at the 4760 level, top station at 4940 and shaft stations at 5900, 6500, 6580, 7500, 7580, 8300, 8380, 8500, and 8620. Shaft stations reference depth below Silver Shaft top station. The 4 Shaft was designed, constructed and commissioned over ten years, between 2007 and 2017. Basic design work was completed by Nordmin Engineering, followed by detailed design completed by Cementation Canada. Shaft construction was awarded to Cementation USA and lateral development was initiated in early 2008. Over the course of the next nine years, the project was suspended and restarted twice, dealt with the loss of a miner, added scope including shaft depth and mine infrastructure facilities, experienced squeezing ground that required liner replacement, changed excavation section, and dealt with a final alignment that was not within design requirement for verticality. Hecla and Cementation were successful in delivering a facility that provides fully functional access from collar at 4940 level to shaft bottom at the 8620 level. Two active mining levels below the collar, 5900 and 6500 are accessed. In addition, the shaft provides access to the future mining level at 7500, skip loading facility at 7580 level, station and loading pocket cutouts at 8300 and 8380 levels, spill pocket at 8500 level, and shaft bottom pumping facility at 8620 level (Figure 2)."

THE DEFINITION of the continental margin, as considered in this paper, is in the broad sense: " ... those provinces of the continents and of the oceans which are associated with the boundary between these two first-order features of the earth" (Heezen et aL, 1959, p. 17). The provinces in the area under con-sideration are: the Continental Shelf, the Continental Slope and the Continental Rise. The Continental Shelf extends from the shoreline to the shelf break, which lies at approximately the 200-meter isobath through-out the region (except north of the Grand Banks, where the break may be defined more properly by the 400-meter isobath). The Continental Slope and Rise occur between the shelf break and the 4,000-meter isobath. (The last figure was somewhat arbitrarily selected for the purpose of this paper.) The Atlantic Continental Margin as thus defined extends along the eastern coast of Canada from the International Boundary in the Gulf of Maine northward to approximately the 60°N latitude off the coast of Labrador. The area of study amounts to at }east 500,000 square miles -an area roughly equivalent to 13 per cent of Canada's total land surface.

Some examples of the results of research projects, conducted in the KOMAG Institute of Mining Technology are presented. Special attention is paid to mining machines and equipment, and improving work safety and comfort of miners in underground workings. From numerous scientific and technical achievements of the KOMAG Institute within the last 2 years, a few design solutions have been selected for a presentation. Some results of European projects on innovative solutions are described as well, highlighting KOMAG?s role in the national and international research area.

"Abstract -Biotite from aplite that appears to have crystallized simultaneously with disseminated Cu-Mo mineralization at MacLeod Lake in northern Quebec yields K-Ar dates in the range 2032 ± 44 Ma to '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. The mean value, 2065 Ma, is some 400 Ma younger than the 2485 ± 64 Ma date obtained from a hornblende concentrate separated from a granodiorite sill that is spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with the disseminated Cu-Mo deposit. The mean biotite date of 2065 Ma at MacLeod Lake, a K-Ar date of 2055 Ma reported from an area 50 km east of MacLeod Lake and published dates of about 2000 Ma for galenas from the Chibougamau Cu-Au ores, suggest a widespread thermal and mineralization event, in that part of the Superior Province east of James Bay, that differs from the common late Archean mineralization that is related to volcanism and metamorphic-intrusive activity.Sommaire - Les datations au K-Ar sur des biotites qui auraient cristallisé en même temps que la minéralisation disséminée en Cu et Mo dans une aplite mise en place au Lac MacLeod, au nord du Québec, s'échalonnent entre 2032 ± 44 Ma et '2f1:)1 ± 47 Ma. "This study investigates the effect of energy/power input on the flotation of a platinum ore in a pilot-scale oscillating grid flotation cell. Oscillating grids generate near ideal hydrodynamic environments, characterised by turbulence which is relatively homogeneous and isotropic. Secondary rougher feed and primary cleaner tail streams were floated in a pilot-scale oscillating grid flotation cell at power inputs from 0 to 2.5 W/kg, using 0.50 and 1.50 mm bubbles. From this study one may conclude that the effect of energy/power input on the flotation rate is strongly dependent on the particle and bubble size. Flotation rates generally increase with increasing particle size and decreasing bubble size. Increasing energy input generally leads to an increase in the flotation rate for finer particles and an optimum flotation rate for intermediate & coarse particles. Optimum conditions for intermediate/coarse platinum ore particles are using small bubbles at low energy inputs, or large bubbles at higher energy inputs. These results suggest that higher energy inputs are generally beneficial for the flotation of platinum ores as these consist predominantly of finer particles (-75 µm) and most industrial flotation applications operate with larger bubbles (1.0-2.0 mm).INTRODUCTIONThere is a considerable body of experimental and theoretical evidence to suggest that energy/power input plays an important role in flotation kinetics, particularly in the finer particle sizes where flotation efficiency is poor (Deglon, 2005). A number of excellent studies into the effect of energy on flotation kinetics have been carried out in impeller stirred cells (Ahmed and Jameson, 1985; Deglon, 2002; Pyke et al., 2003; Newell and Grano, 2006). Investigations using this type of cell have a number of limitations. The impeller influences particle suspension, bubble break-up and agitation in the cell. In addition, turbulence is highly inhomogeneous and anisotropic, with power intensities near the impeller orders of magnitude higher than those found elsewhere in the cell (Deglon, 1998; Koh and Schwarz, 2003; Schubert, 1999, 2008). These limitations have resulted in the development of novel cells for the investigation of energy input."

Roasting of molybdenite concentrate is an important stage in the production of commercial molybdenum trioxide. The oxidation kinetic and mechanism of molybdenum sulfide concentrates from two plants were investigated at temperatures from 444 °C to 640°C. The rate of reaction was determined for thin layer samples in a muffle furnace at controlled temperatures, oxygen excess and removal of sulfur dioxide. For both concentrates the rate of reaction is fairly slow at temperatures below 500°C and remains fairly constant from 540 to 600 °C. It was observed that the concentrate from the first plant presents a tendency for sintering or glazing at temperatures above 620°C, whereas the same phenomena was observed at 20 or 30 °C higher temperature for the second concentrate. A kinetic model of two reactions, involving the formation of Mo02 as intermediate oxide for the production of Mo03 is proposed and activation energies of 23.0 and 20.8 kJ/mol for the first and second reaction were calculated for temperatures between 520 °C to 600 °C. These low values of activation energies indicate that the overall rate of oxidation is controlled by mass transfer, particularly in a porous layer of oxides. Therefore, the renewal of the surface by mixing and motion of the concentrate layer is of great importance. Sublimation of Mo03 becomes significant for temperatures above 650 °C.

"Smelting of copper concentrates in the flash smelter generates a flue dust stream that contains a substantial amount of copper and accumulates more than half of the arsenic input to the smelter. In view of its high copper content flue dust recirculation to the flash smelter is common practice. Globally traded copper concentrates are affected by ever increasing arsenic contents and cause an increasing circulating arsenic load in flash smelter operation. Control of the arsenic level in the smelter slag becomes a challenge. This interaction of arsenic loaded copper feedstock, need for flue dust recirculation and slag quality control call for possibilities to reduce the arsenic load of the recirculated flue dust stream.The technology of partial roasting is known from pre-treatment of copper concentrates before smelting, and gold concentrates before cyanide leaching, to remove the harmful element arsenic. The partial roasting technology can be adapted for use in the purification of the flue dust. A major challenge for flue dust treatment is its extremely fine particle size compared to usual concentrates. For this reason Outotec developed a new process, which allows handling of such fine flue dust. This process solution provides an efficient possibility to reduce the arsenic burden in copper smelter operations.The suggested process aims at reducing the arsenic load to the smelter by treating the flue dust prior to recirculation to the smelter. The presented results are based on test work in the Outotec R&D-centre in Frankfurt. It is possible to remove 80-85% of the contained arsenic and to collect it in an arsenic trioxide residue with a concentration above 90%. The final off gas contains SO2 from decomposition of sulphates that are contained in the flue dust. The off gas stream is relatively small. We assume that it is possible to combine the off gas stream with other smelter process gas streams and to treat it in an existing sulphuric acid plant. Coal is used as fuel and as reductant to reduce pentavalent arsenate to trivalent arsenite. Arsenite can be kept in gas form at temperatures above 450°C. This permits separation of a calcine stream with arsenic levels of 0.2 – 0.3%, which is recirculated to the furnace.Outotec has a wide range of roasting testing facilities from lab-scale to pilot-scale. Outotec has both capability to modify and adapt technology to specific ore or concentrate requirements, but also the necessary infrastructure in its research centers in Frankfurt and Pori to do appropriate validation tests in lab and pilot scale size plants."

"In the present study, the recovery of rare earth elements (REE) in the nitrophosphate process of fertilizer production is investigated. The apatite has been recovered from iron ore tailings by flotation. After digestion of apatite in concentrated nitric acid, Ca(NO3)2.4H2O is first separated by cooling crystallization and then the REEs are recovered by precipitation. Optimum conditions in these steps have been determined in a previous study. The precipitate mainly consists of CaHPO4.2H2O and REE phosphates.In the present study, selective dissolution and re-precipitation have been studied in order to obtain a precipitate that is more concentrated in REEs. The precipitate was selectively dissolved in nitric and phosphoric acid at different acidities (pH 6 to 0) with the liquid /solid ratio of 100 mL/g. It is shown that most of the CaHPO4.2H2O and other calcium containing compounds will be dissolved at pH 2 while the REE phosphates are not dissolved above a pH of approximately 2. Thus, by partial dissolution of the REE precipitate at pH 2.5 most of the solid calcium phosphates will be dissolved and the remaining solid phase, which is more concentrated in REEs, can be filtered off as a fairly concentrated REE solid mass and the liquor can be recycled back to recover more P nutrients. Alternatively, the REE enriched precipitate was dissolved completely in nitric acid and re-precipitated again by addition of ammonium hydroxide to pH 1.2. "In flotation research, relatively little attention has been paid to understanding particle-bubble detachment phenomena compared with attachment processes. With CFD models now incorporating attachment/detachment kinetics, it is important to obtain more accurate formulations for detachment probability. The formula most often used is due to Bloom and Heindel (2002) who proposed that the rate of detachment would equal the product of detachment frequency, as previously estimated by other authors, and probability of destabilization, as estimated previously by Schulze. These two factors both account for the balance between stabilization and destabilization forces, so the product accounts for this effect twice. An integrated procedure has been followed to estimate the overall detachment rate by re-analysing the process. In this analysis, detachment rate is calculated as the frequency of eddy-aggregate interactions (or “collisions”) sufficiently energetic to cause detachment. The Bond number analysis of Schulze has been incorporated into the turbulence frequency analysis of previous authors in an integrated way. The new formulation has essentially the same type of dependencies as the previous model, but gives a lower detachment frequency. Detachment frequency has been calculated using the new formula for conditions relevant to an industrial flotation cell. INTRODUCTIONIt is well known that the effectiveness of froth flotation for separating different minerals is limited to the particle size range of approximately 10–100 mm (Trahar & Warren, 1976; Trahar, 1981). Fine particles tend to follow fluid streamlines around bubbles limiting the likelihood of bubble–particle collision, while coarse particles can be more easily detached from bubbles before collection can be achieved.Phenomenological models have been developed to quantify the physico-chemical aspects of flotation in order to better understand factors affecting these limitations, and to suggest ways of broadening the window of feasible flotation. Koh and Schwarz (2008) have incorporated these models into computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models of flotation cells, which have then been used for design and scale-up purposes (Schwarz et al., 2015). The models are based on dividing the process of bubble–particle interaction into three subprocesses: collision, adhesion and detachment. Of these, the hydrodynamics of bubble–particle collision and the probability of adhesion have been studied most extensively, while the dynamics of detachment have received relatively little attention from investigators."
