"Drums containing 0.07 m3 of pyritic waste rock from a zinc/copper mine, with and without Natural Phosphate Rock (NPR) additions (40 kg/t waste rock) were set up outdoors. The effluent chemistry has been monitored over a period of 709 days. In the presence of NPR, the cumulative acidity discharged from 7 out of 8 drums was 80 % less than that discharged from drums without NPR. Mixing NPR throughout the drums was more effective in reducing acidity than placement of the NPR in a layer in the drum. NPR treatment was more effective for 'fresh' waste rock than for material which had weathered for more than 4 years. It is concluded that application of NPR to pyritic waste rock could greatly reduce acidity generated.IntroductionWaste rock dumps are significant sources of acid, generated by the oxidation of sulphides. Oxygen and water supply are oxidation rate-controlling factors, and oxygen supply is the reaction-limiting component. If secondary minerals can be formed on the surface of the rocks, pyrite oxidation and therefore acid generation may be reduced or inhibited. Neutralizing agents such as limestone do not prevent the oxidation of pyrite but treat the resultant acid mine drainage (AMD) or acid rock drainage (ARD).Meek et al. (1991) determined in pilot scale experiments that apatite mixed with tailings was more cost effective than liming or use of PVC liners to reduce oxygen and water penetration into the tailings. Phosphate is not acting as a neutralising agent but it creates a chemical condition on pyritic surfaces which prevents reactions of the oxidising agents. Precipitation of principally iron phosphates physically isolates the pyrite surfaces from further oxidation (Ziemkiewicz 1990; Evangelou 1994). The chemistry of the phosphate effects has been described by Spotts and Dollhopf (1990). Secondary mineral formation was evident in the leach pile at Gibraltar when leaching was impaired (Scott, 1991) indicating a link between oxidation and the mineral-formation process. Researchers at the Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) work to reduce respirable dust exposures in mining operations. One focus of this research is silica dust control for surface and underground operations in the metal/nonmetal mining industry. PRL researchers analyze dust sampling results from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) to identify high-risk occupations to guide research efforts. Research is then conducted in an effort to improve existing technologies and/or develop new controls for reducing worker exposure to airborne silica dust. During the last few years, PRL researchers have conducted research related to the following goals: improving protection provided by enclosed cabs on mobile surface mining equipment, reducing dust generation from surface drills, reducing dust levels in iron ore operations, and developing a new method to clean dust from workers? soiled clothes. A description of each of these controls and subsequent dust reductions quantified through site surveys will be provided.

Under the oxidizing conditions of the McClean Lake Tailings Management Facility (TMF) hydrocarbons entrained on the surface of tailings material from mill processes are gradually converted to soluble bicarbonate ion. This has been observed to be a process occurring over approximately three years likely encouraged by the presence of a microbiological community within the tailings mass and in the water column. A recent tailings sampling campaign has provided evidence that bicarbonate ion is participating in the conversion of gypsum to calcite. In older tailings, equilibrium with calcite appears to be controlling the terminal bicarbonate ion concentration.

Resistance spot welding is the most common type of welding in the automotive industry. In RSW the size and shape of welding nugget is one of the most effective factors on mechanical properties, such as tensile shear strength and fatigue strength. so properly adjusting the variables of the welding is necessary .in this study the effect of different parameters of RSW including time, current, electrode force, geometry of electrode so diameter and angle of electrode tip in the shape and size of welding nugget evaluated. for experimental procedure, low carbon steel sheet st12 is used. the process is simulated with finite element method by using ANSYS software. for the formation of welding nugget a 2 dimensional symmetrical model electrical-thermalmechanical is used and for elevate the accuracy ,we determined the properties of material related to temperature. The results show that increasing the time and current of welding, the diameter of spot weld also increased and the role of current is more impressive. and also increasing the electrode force decrease the diameter of the nugget due to increasing the contact area and decreasing the resistance .increasing the diameter of electrode tip cause increasing contact area and decreasing the resistance and decreasing the diameter of the nugget. furthermore, changing tip angle and electrode diameter don't show sensible change in the geometry of the welding nugget. comparison between simulation and experimental result show a good adaption.

"The ProblemMany science activities receive substantial funding from governments without much direct economic benefit accruing to state or individuals. In contrast, the search for knowledge has never been an acceptable so le justification of geoscience activity, perhaps because of its utility right from its inception. William Smith's geological activities were embraced because of their usefulness in building canals. Utility has been expected ever since.For decades it has been accepted at senior level s of government, without much understanding of the process, that geological surveys are necessary as a basis of resource evaluation and utilization. Recently, government treasury board s, staffed with economist s, have questioned these near axioms and in many cases the budget s of geological surveys have reflected their stone y-eyed appraisal s. Are government surveys necessary? Can their functions be reduced? Can some or all of their functions be privatized?Government geologists have been muted in trumpeting their successes outside their own ranks. Companies have been reluctant to give specific public feedback on the work of government surveys that have truly aided or guided them toward discovery. Lack of acknowledged linkages between survey work and discovery has dogged survey managers in budget reviews. Impoverished surveys cannot perform adequately so the circle is completed and the doubters' prophecy fulfilled. This is the genera l problem; British Columbia is the archetypical province."

"Potentially economic stratiform barite-sulphide deposits have recently been discovered in Devonian basinal facies rocks of the Kechika Trough of northeast British Columbia. This new mineral district is over 180 kilometres long and includes nine major occurrences, namely Driftpile Creek, Bear, Mount Alcock, Cirque, Fluke, Pie, Elf, Kwadacha and Sika. The Cirque is the largest known deposit, with reserves of atleast 30 million tonnes averaging 10per cent combined lead-zinc and 47 grams per tonne silver. The footwall rocks for the Cirque and other strati/rom barite-sulphide deposits in the area are rhythmically bedded baritic and pyritic carbonaceous black shales, siliceous argillites and cherts of probable Mid to Late Devonian age. These siliceous rocks overlie a succession of proximal to distal turbidites which are the basinal equivalent of Early to Mid Devonian carbonate reefs to the east. The siliceous facies is overlain by deeper-water black shales of probable Late Devonian to Mississippian age.Preliminary stratigraphic and sedimentological investigations suggest that the strati/arm massive pyrite and bedded barite deposits formed in third-order euxinic basins within a northwest-trending structurally controlled trough which, in the southern part of the district, was bounded by carbonate reefs. The exhalative event, which appears to have been accompanied by synsedimentary faulting, took place during the early stages of a major eastward-directed marine transgression that was probably related to rapid crustal subsidence. Dewatering of metal-enriched shales and subsequent brine discharge along fault zones within the trough, with the exhaled brines accumulating in seafloor depressions, is the mechanism envisaged for formation of the deposits. Convective circulation systems may have been established about the more deep-seated faults, in response to elevated heat flow levels."

Traditionally in hard rock mining, large diameter raise boring was thought of as 3.04 metre or 3.66 metre diameter holes 300 metres deep. Mine and ventilation engineers were challenged to design systems either incorporating such holes, or slashing and modifying to suit. Now, 5.49 metre diameter holes up to 1,000 metres deep are being excavated. The ability to pilot and ream such holes not only creates new options for mine engineers in mine ventilation system design, but also creates new opportunities in mine access. By combining holes of this diameter with the ability to accurately drill long pilot holes within the diameter of the pilot hole through the entire length of the hole, borehole hoisting systems are now fully capable of being main production or service accesses for mines. This paper will review the present day capabilities of large diameter raise boring, potential applications for such excavations and some considerations for companies contemplating using large diameter raise boring in their operations

Operating the underground marble quarries effectively, it is important to evaluate the deposit blocks economically which are affected by the suitability of the topography and configuration of bedding. The joint sets within the deposit and the spacing between these discontinuties are also of great importance. In this study, the marble deposits that could be geomechanically eligible for underground excavation have been selected throughout Turkey and these selected reserves have been classified accordingly by Q-Rating System. These classified marble deposits that forms groups of 1,2, and 3 (groups were determined by evaluating the O-rating, topography, quarry situation, cracks, joints etc.) are convenient for this type of production. Nevertheless, when the auxiliary factors (topography, location, production method etc.) regarding the deposit have also been investigated, the most convenient sub-group of deposits (Afyon Tiger Skin, Burdur Beige, Diyarbakir Pink and Mugla White) have emerged. The sizing of the pillars have been performed utilising Bieniawski?s stress profile. The LAMODEL software, developed by National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), USA and run under the laminated displacement discontinuity method, has been used to size the pillars. This work brings in a novel opportunity to Turkey, in which no underground marble quarry has been attempted up-to-date similar to its several examples in Italy, USA, etc. This study serves as a reference for the marble operators and for the pioneering application of laminated displacement discontinuity method in hard rocks.

Successful approaches are discussed in some detail, and typical results which have been achieved are reviewed.IntroductionA challenge which at all times confronts the manager o f any mineral operation is the potential to improve his operation no matter how effective it might be a t the present time. The challenge has been present through my entire lifetime and I suspect a good many years prior to that and, I expect, will continue many year s and decades in the future. The competitive and economic situation in which we in the minerals industry find ourselves today makes the challenge eve n more important during the 1980s. In many cases it’s a question of survival, not simply pr of it improvement.There are, of course, many avenues to improving profitability; technological changes, new equipment and facilities, improved products, improved mine plans, etc. All of these are important and must be addressed by each manager. This paper focusses on just one avenue to improvement and that is ""improved management"", not so much of management at the boardroom level but of improved management o f the facilities and workforce as the y currently exist. Management implies control. There are three areas where control is often found lacking:1, Repair and maintenance of equipment and facilities;2. Material supply including procurement, inventory control and warehousing; and3. Training.These three areas are all complex and difficult to manage and they are all but ignored in the formal education which our industry's manager s normally receive. They are areas which can be improved with relatively small investments and therefore, they represent especially attractive improvement targets during the 80s when, for most of us, investment dollars are very difficult to come by."

In underground mining applications, successful blasting results in less damage, which may lower support costs, lower dilution and produce a uniform fragmentation. The explosive detonation process creates a pressure front that propagates a stress wave into the surrounding rock mass at a high velocity. The stress wave can induce varying degrees of damage, depending on rock strength and physical properties, to the excavated area. This paper presents a summary of a research project that was conducted to investigate the propagation of explosive-induced stress waves in hard rock media and the mechanism of rock damage and fracturing due to shock wave propagation. The primary objective of this work was to numerically simulate the experimental study of blast-induced rock fracturing conducted within Inco Limited, Mines Research department. ITASCA?s discontinuum code UDEC (Universal Distinct Element Code), was used to simulate the results of the controlled blasting experiments. In brief, the focal point of the paper can be summarized as follows: ? Investigate the size of the stress-wave-induced fractured zone around the blasthole, ? Examine the extent and direction of the radial fractures that form outside the blasthole, and ? Explore the mechanisms that cause rock breakage.

"Friction stir spot welding of aluminum alloy AA6061-T6 sheets was performed with circular (plunge depths 0.4 and 0.6 mm), square and triangular tool pin (plunge depth 0.4 mm) with constant 0.2 mm shoulder penetration to characterize various zones of weld nugget. It was observed that the depth of the stir zone formed below the tool pin is comparatively similar for different tool pins but wider for circular tool pin. The size of another stir zone formed at the interface of tool pin and a tool shoulder is observed to be larger for triangular and square tool pin due to the higher swept rate. Predicted strain from finite element analysis, calculated strain rate using Zener-Hollomon relationship and experimentally measured grain size distribution indicates severe amount of plastic deformation in-and-around the nugget/spot region. Finer grains in various stir zones were observed than thermo-mechanically and heat affected zones. Grain size (at distribution peaks) in stir zones varied around 2.54 µm to 3.69 µm for different tool pin profiles as compared to base metal grain size of 20 µm. Microhardness results indicate that the welded region is quite softened than base metal and maximum hardness is mostly observed around the thermo-mechanically affected zone.INTRODUCTION Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is widely used for joining the sheets of materials like aluminum, copper, magnesium, etc. The process begins by plunging a rotating tool (generally having a pin and a shoulder) into the sheets to be welded. Continuous stirring of the tool and downward plunging force generates localized heat due to friction at the tool-sheet interface and plastic deformation of the sheet metal. The material gets softened and the plasticized material adjacent to the tool pin starts flowing due to the action of tool rotation and tool plunge thereby causing intermixing and bonding between the overlapped sheets. The tool stirring also promotes grain refinement in the weld nugget associated with high strain, strain rate and thermal cycle. The formation of new microstructure also affects the mechanical properties and efficiency of FSSW joints. Studies also showed that the tool pin design and tool shoulder feature exerts a noteworthy influence on the material flow and intermixing during the FSSW process (Reilly et al., 2015; Hirasawa et al., 2010). Sarkar et al. (2016) studied the material flow and intermixing during FSSW using tracer material method and reported that the size and width of flow zone increases with tool penetration depth. The influence of tool rotational speed on microstructure and stir zone temperature was investigated during FSSW of dissimilar AA6061-AA5754 alloys (Gerlich et al., 2007). They reported that the average grain size in stir zone of AA6061 weld increases with increase in tool rotational speed. In another work, Gerlich et al. (2008) studied the local melting and tool slippage during FSSW of Al alloys. Tool slippage was investigated by calculating the strain rate using Zener-Hollomon relation. Garg and Bhattacharya (2017a) studied the effect of dwell time, tool pin profiles and tool rotational speed on shear strength, microstructure, temperature and strain distribution during FSSW of AA6061. In another work, Garg and Bhattacharya (2017b) analyzed the effect of different tool pins and pinless tools on the shear strength and microstructure during similar and dissimilar FSSW of AA6061-T6 and pure Cu. Chang et al. (2004) proposed mathematical relationship between the average grain size and Zener-Hollomon parameter during friction stir processing of Mg alloy. Solhjoo (2010) presented a mathematical approach to determine the critical strain as a function of peak strain required for initiation of dynamic recrystallization in austenitic stainless steel. Fratini and Buffa (2005) also proposed the numerical model to determine the grain size during continuous dynamic recrystallization phenomenon."

Almost every form of iron ore and carbon material has been used as a raw material in the production of pig iron in electric reduction furnaces. Experience derived from the operation of the large 33,000-kva. Tysland-Hole furnaces, however, indicates that production results are very much influenced by the raw material conditions. The author presents the principle pattern of the metallurgical structure of the interior of an electric pig iron furnace. On the basis of this, he discusses the variations of electrical and metallurgical conditions for the process which will take place with changing raw materials. The formation of a coke bed underneath the electrodes, and its influence on the furnace operation, is illustrated. Shaping of metals by thixoforming relies on the unusual flow behavior of semisolid slurries containing nondendritic solid phase. The Flow behavior of metallic alloys containing both solid and liquid phases is investigated in the low solid fraction range (, 55%). This behavior depends on both the solid fraction and the shear rate. Four different shear rates is applied using back extrusion technique and flow stress versus true strain in different solid fraction is compared. It is well accepted that the flow stress s of alloys in their semi-solid state obeys to a thixotropic behavior, due to agglomeration and dissagglomeration phenomena during forming. The load-displacement curves produced from the tests may show an initial peak, believed to originate from a skeletal structure which rapidly breaks down under shear. Apparent viscosity obtained from this method is compared with other works and the proper power law of pseudo plastic state is introduced.

Similarly to notions of constant capital/expenses in business or magnetization power for electric motors an energetic base load (E0) is always necessary to set up a mining process. Denominated as ?non-productive energy? or base load, (E0) is a constant component of the entire energy consumption of the process, while another component the ?productive energy? (Ep) is variable, being function of the production/throughput (M). By using these new concepts, the author creates an energetic model proposing a new method of assessing changes in mining processes (throughput) that can reveal possible energy savings (DSM component) or energy losses. Proposed mathematical model of assessing (E0) and energy savings by using ?Marginal Energy Usage Index? (MEUI) enables creation of historical benchmarks and direct on line energetic (efficiency) assessment of mining processes and/or equipments. The paper analyses the case of assessing possible energy savings that can be obtained by: ?? Improving efficiencies of various equipments (by retrofit) ? reducing E0 ?? Improving the process control or other process changes ? reducing Ep ?? Monitoring persistence of the adopted Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs). For the new plant design, the proposed method enables prediction of Customer Baseline in various mine/process configurations. The method could become part of a ?preventive action? in design process by offering a reliable tool of assessing additional financial effort (Incremental cost) when choosing various higher efficiency equipments and/or processes.

With thousands of kilometers of buried oil and gas pipelines throughout the country, carrying flammable, high-energy hydrocarbons, the integrity and safety of this transportation and distribution network are paramount. The pipeline industry has the primary responsibility for pipeline safety and has in many ways taken the lead in dealing with safety issues. Over recent years, regulatory demands have increased, requiring operators to comprehensively evaluate their pipelines through indirect and direct inspections and to manage risk through integrity programs. Mechanistic and correlative models have been developed that assist in the prediction of pipeline integrity and the determination of reassessment intervals. These lifetime prediction models are based on decades of laboratory research as well as pipeline operating data, material data, and field monitoring data pertaining to soil conditions and CP. An overview is presented of an integrated approach towards the development of such models for the evaluation of external cracking and corrosion of transmission lines.

The extractive sector today faces growing social, legal and political risks (SLPs) from so many different stakeholders including national and local governments, name and shame groups, civil society and environmental groups, and the ?Occupy? movement. Beyond these stakeholders, there are the indigenous peoples who have growing legal, social, political and economic influence which can often determine the outcome of the Project. The development curve in the extractive sector from initial exploration to mine start-up has become longer, steeper and more risky and expensive as these SLPs have grown in scope and complexity. Even if a project is permitted or starts commercial production, its ongoing development and operations are also facing these SLPs. The continuous assessment of these SLPs and the strategy to mitigate for them has now become critical for every project in the extractive sector. A project will only be successful if it is able to obtain the legal permits to operate, then withstand any judicial reviews, and then also to be able to gain and maintain the Social License to Operate (SLO). Stakeholder identification, management and engagement are key risk-mitigation tools. This paper focuses on the growing influence that indigenous peoples are now enjoying and the impacts on the extractive sector. Indigenous peoples are a unique stakeholder group because their legal rights and interests to lands and resources, their aboriginal title and rights, are gaining more recognition. When indigenous peoples form alliances with other stakeholders, this simply adds to their growing momentum and leverage, and this can become a daunting challenge for the extractive sector. More due diligence is required by companies to understand and assess the challenges posed by operating in areas claimed by indigenous peoples. There is a real need for mining companies to develop an effective indigenous engagement strategy to address these challenges in order to successfully convert risks into opportunities. Early identification and engagement with the indigenous peoples is required and the goal should be to conclude an Impact Benefits Agreement (IBA) with the affected indigenous peoples. The real objective must be to develop a real and transparent relationship between the company and the indigenous peoples so as to gain and maintain the SLO.

This type of mineralization i amenable to exploration through an integrated program of geological and geophy ical surveying, consisting of the following: i) Geological urvey both regional and local to outline area of turbidites and a ociated iron formation. Structural and tratigraphic trends documented during this phase are useful in determining eventual grid configurations. Grids are then mapped and ampled at 1:2000 cale. ii) Magnetometer and gradiometer urvey at the ame scale define strongly magnetic diabase dyke and erratically magnetic portions of iron formation. iii) VLF-EM survey are u eful in outlining conductive trend invariably as ociated with sulphidic or graphitic phase of iron formation. iv) Geological updating and ampling of iron fom1ation based on the geophysical su rveys. This is necessary for the production of a final geologic map and a an adjunct to drill target election. In problematic instances self-potential urveys have documented the pre ence of non-conductive sulphide accumulations, and horizontal loop EM surveys have been used to determine conductor geometry and quality. Target selection is based on a synthesis of the information from all of the above surveys with the results of no single survey being critical to drill decisions. The program is designed to provide first-pass, detailed , cost-effective ground coverage of large areas of highly prospective geology.

"The Afsin-Elbistan coal deposit with its 3.4 billion metric tons of reserve is the biggest coal basin and one of the most important resources for electrical energy production in Turkey. The coal deposit is located north of Elbistan, Kahramanmaras Province, in southeast Turkey (Fig. 1).The Kislakoy sub-basin of the Afsin-Elbistan basin was selected as the first open cast mine to feed four power station blocks of 340 MW each. The mine is equipped with six identical bucket wheel excavators of the type Sch Rs (2300/5) 32. The annual coal demand of the power station is 18.5 million metric tons. The Elbistan basin encompasses an area of 900 km2, and its centre lies about 1150 m above mean sea level. The sedimentation took place mainly in the upper Pliocene period. The thickness of the coal bed varies from 20 m to 60 m, respectively. The basal part of the coal beds consists of clay, marl and sandy clay. These formations are overlain by gyttja, which may also occur in the form of calcareous ooze, enveloping coal beds. The thickness of the gyttja is up to 35 m (Otto-Gold, 1969). The coal of Afsin-Elbistan is soft coal and the quality has been found to vary considerably throughout the deposit. The thicknesses of the sterile intercalations vary from 0.50 m to 2.2 m and average 1 m in thickness. From the quality control point of view, the coal seam is regarded as upper seam where the gyttja formation occurs as sterile intercalations, and lower seam where the clay formation occurs instead of the gyttja (Fig. 2). The CaO content of upper Kislakoy coal is very high, grinding resistance is low and base to acid ratio of ash, that is, the ratio of acid oxides of metals to base, is greater than one (Ural and Onur, 2001). Contrary to upper Kislakoy coal, CaO content of lower Kislakoy coal is very low, grinding resistance is high and base:acid ratio of ash is smaller than one. Modified Impact Strength Index (MISI) tests are used to determine the grindability of the Elbistan coals (Ural, 1999)."

The economic prosperity of many Canadian communities depends on resource extraction within the traditional territories of Indigenous people. The geographic sites where these resources are situated are also areas where these Indigenous people have sustained themselves for millennia through hunting, fishing, trapping, and gathering activities. These traditional activities provide not only sustenance, but also cultural and spiritual values, and the ability to transmit oral Indigenous cultures and customs from generation to generation. The multimillion dollar revenue mine project proposed within the Cariboo Chilcotin region of British Columbia is situated geographically in a location which has sustained the Tsilhqot?in people for millennia. However, this group of people have important social and cultural values nested within the traditional activities at this location. These values are typically not at the forefront of resource development.
