"The IREDES1 Special Interest Group (SIG) for drill rigs has been active since its launch during MineExpo 2000 in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States. SIG for drill rigs is responsible for the development of an IREDES drill rig profile, including the exchange of production planning, performance, and quality reporting data between various kinds of drill rigs and the databases used by the operating mine. During 2001, a first draft of the drill rigs profile was jointly prepared by drill rig suppliers, mining companies, and third-party suppliers and reviewed during several SIG meetings. The profile for prototyping projects was released in mid-2002; the first official IREDES release was based on feedback received from these projects.In 2002, LKAB and Atlas Copco decided to carry out an IREDES prototyping project using the Simba L6C production drill rig. The goal was to verify the drill rig profile and identify potential problems prior to the official release. This was done by implementing the IREDES prototype version into LKAB’s production planning and Simba rig control systems. The Simba rig control system was designed to handle drill plan and logging information coming from the mine planning system. In parallel to this, the mine production system was adapted for drill plan export and logging data import in IREDES format.This paper presents the most recent results of the IREDES prototyping project. Results from late 2002 show that the basic architecture of the drill rig profile works and that a common language for data exchange, IREDES, will be a central requirement for future mine automation.As a result of the IREDES prototyping project, the IREDES standard was approved at the IREDES board meeting held at the 2003 CIM Annual Conference and Exhibition. Soon thereafter, IREDES compliant products, including drill rigs and mine production planning systems, were put on the market."

Katowice Coal Holding (KHW) is one of the largest coal companies in Europe. The company owns five coal mines with a daily output of around 60 000 tons of coal. In the Katowice city area, very good quality steam coal is extracted. The depth of mining varies between 400 and 1100 m and some of the mines rank amongst those most afflicted by methane in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin, with the methane hazard having a significant impact on production and safety. ?Myslowice-Wesola? mine, being a part of the Katowice Coal Holding is characterized by high methane and rockburst hazards. The mine is equipped with a modern surface drainage pumping station. At the mentioned mine, longwall 514 was selected for analysis of its methane emission. The longwall was extracting the thick seam 501 (over 4 m), at a depth of over 900 m, which was subject to high stress and high gas concentration conditions. At a distance of about 50 m above, seam 501 is covered by thin seam 416. The strata between these two seams are sandstone and mudstone layers. In the floor of seam 501, with a thin shale interlayer, is located seam 510, which is the thickest (over 10m) and richest coal seam in the Upper Silesian Coal Basin. In longwall 514 and it?s vicinity, methane was the dominant risk. For this longwall three methods of classical gas drainage were carried out. At first, drainage was undertaken using long boreholes from a cross-cut at level 665 m, located far from the production panel. Later, it was performed using typical boreholes drilled from the ventilation gallery (tail gate road). Finally, it was undertaken using a degassing drift executed in the upper coal seam 416. All of these headings, ie. cross-cut level 665 m, the ventilation road and conveyor road in seam 501 and the degassing drift in seam 416, were equipped with media for drilling and proper drainage pipelines. Due to the high rockburst hazard and some problems with caving, several kinds of de-stressing and torpedo blasts were carried out in both coal seams and roof rocks. The subsequent analysis and experiments allowed the establishment of some general rules for carrying out degassing operations effectively. The effectiveness of a degassing drift was demonstrated. In some instances, the system allowed more than 70% of the total methane released to be captured and fed into pipelines. The aforementioned blasts had a marginal impact on methane emissions and the efficiency of degassing methods. Cyclic drilling and regular switching of boreholes in phase with the mining progress and working face advance were shown to be essential.

To properly understand industrial conditions in Spain it is necessary to consider the early history of the country. Spain is very backward in many lines. They use the sickle for cutting grain, and plows for cultivating the land, which resemble those of Biblical days. In the great mining camp at Bilbao only one steam-shovel is in use, although about two hundred million tons of ore has been produced, and this almost entirely from open cuts. It is the lack of industrial development, such as is found in many other countries, which permits large mining enterprises to be controlled almost entirely by foreign capital, although Spain is such an old country, and which permits mines opened in the days of the Phoenicians to still operate. Such deposits in America would be exhausted in a comparatively few years. The Phoenicians are supposed to have reached Spain about 1100 B.C. and to have worked some of the properties in the Rio Tinto district. The Carthagenians invaded the country about 236 B.C., and they were driven out about 205 B.C. by the Romans. The Romans ruled until 483 A.D., when they were overthrown by the Visigoths. Then, about 711 A.D., the Moors from Africa became prominent and they were finally expelled by the Spaniards in 1492. Spanish power reached its zenith under Phillip II, during the latter half of the 16th century, and since the close of that century the country has lost its prominent place among the nations. There are some evidences of revival in the development of good roads, the construction of a satisfactory network of railways, and the building of magnificent thoroughfares through the capital city, Madrid.

Introduction Research concerning all phases of hoisting practice, but more particularly the causes and prevention of hoisting rope deterioration and the improvement of safety dogs 158 for shaft conveyances, has been carried on intensively for the past three years in the Province of Ontario. Prior to the hoisting accident at the Paymaster mine on February 2nd, 1945, there had been no fatalities in the Province due to a hoisting rope failure. It was probably on this account that little original research on hoisting problems had been undertaken here and that the mining industry had been content to look to British, South African, and United States investigators for new developments in this field. Except for the Paymaster accident this might still be the case since, in any industry, it is apparently necessary for a serious accident to occur before any extensive programme of preventive research is launched. When this accident occurred, the Government of Ontario, with the close co-operation of the Paymaster officials and the mining industry as a whole, took immediate steps to determine the cause. A five-man, non-industry committee, selected from the Faculty of the University of Toronto with Dean C. R. Young as Chairman, was appointed by the Government, and a three-man Committee consisting of R. D. Parker, General Superintendent of the International Nickel Company of Canada, Limited, R. L. Healy, General Manager of Wright Hargreaves Mines, Limited, and R. E. Dye, General Manager of Dome Mines, Limited, with the latter acting as Chairman, was appointed by the Ontario Mining Association.

In the planning phase of every construction project, layout of temporary facilities is a crucial task; site layout can affect safety, travel cost and time, construction productivity, and space utilization. However, site layout planning can be a complicated problem, due to the interdependency of influencing factors. Although interaction among activities is one of the major drivers of site layout planning, it has not been properly addressed in past research. In this study, simulation is presented as a promising tool to address this gap. The capability of simulation technology to model complex processes in construction projects makes use of simulation tools in site layout optimization problems effective, while existing methods are unable to perfectly model these problems, in some cases. Additionally, the advantages and challenges of implementing simulation are assessed and a generic framework for simulation application in site layout planning is proposed.

"In the context of today's continuously changing world, there are many factors which must be considered when attempting to assess the ability of Canada's primary copper producers to remain competitive in the face of increasing competition in world markets. In this paper, we have attempted to document those factors that will have the greatest impact on the future viability of Canada's copper industry, and to suggest possible strategies to fully utilize whatever inherent advantages Canada may have to enhance its competitive position. Technological factors related to the efficiency of precious and by-product metals recovery, energy type and utilization efficiency, production and sale of sulphur by-products, and control of 502 emissions are given high priority in this evaluation of Canada's future needs to remain competitive. Particular emphasis is placed on assessing the relative viability of hydrometallurgical versus pyrometallurgical processes for copper; to address uniquely Canadian conditions and problems. Due consideration is also given to the economic incentives required to allow Canada's copper producers to compete under anticipated world market conditions and to facilitate the continued development of Canada's copper resources. IntroductionWhen we try to assess the viability or competitiveness of any industry the bottom line is still usually, ""Can we produce a pound of product cheaper than the competition?"" Canada's copper industry is certainly no exception. However, as with most resource-based industries dependent upon exports, there are many factors which have a significant effect on the cost components which make up the total cost of producing and selling a pound of copper. It is desirable therefore to have as clear a picture as possible of the cost components, the major factors affecting them, and how they compare with the competition, particularly the third-world copper producers.In this paper we have attempted to provide a brief outlook for world copper markets and a brief overview of Canada's competitive position. We have also attempted to document those factors which will have the greatest impact on future production costs, and have suggested possible initiatives to utilize inherent Canadian advantages to enhance our competitive position. "In Malaysia, there were two rare earths processing plants namely Asian Rare Earth (ARE) and the Malaysian Rare Earth Corporation Plant (MAREC) in Perak, which were operated until 1992 and were subsequently closed due to problems pertaining to disposal of large amount of radioactive waste. Recently, Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) has become one of the largest rare earths processing plant in the world producing rare earth elements (REE) in Gebeng, Pahang. The primary raw material is lanthanide concentrate (LC) which is imported from Mount Weld mine in Australia and shipped to Malaysia. LC is produced from lanthanide ore after mining and mineral processing. The ore has a lower impact than Bayan Obo, Mountain Pass and adsorbed clay deposits, given the small footprint of the mine itself and the remoteness of the location. The type of ore being mined (rare earth phosphates: carbonatite, monazite) may have higher thorium content than bastnasite ore from the Chinese or American mines but still far below radiation concerns. This paper was written to review the processing flowsheet at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP), the environmental impact associated with the processing of the said ores and the sustainability of the operation.INTRODUCTIONRare earth minerals are one of a set of 17 minerals or chemical elements which consists of yttrium and scandium, as well as the 15 lanthanide elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium). Despite their importance, rare earth minerals rarely exist in economically viable concentrations and they are usually difficult to extract. Rare-earth minerals create strong magnets when added to magnetic elements such as iron, and are useful for the production of electronics systems as well as electric cars. They are also used extensively in automotive catalytic converters, fluid cracking catalysts in petroleum refining, wind turbines, phosphors in colour televisions and flat panel screens, displays for mobile phones and laptops, rechargeable batteries, and various medical devices. The elements are typically split into two subgroups: the cerium sub-group of ‘‘Light’’ rare earth elements (LREEs) which includes La to Eu and the yttrium sub-group of ‘‘Heavy’’ rare earth elements (HREEs) which include the remaining lanthanide elements, Gd to Lu, including yttrium (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al., 2013; Trifonov, 1963). Scandium, however, when it is classified as a rare earth element, is not included in either the LREE or HREE classifications (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al, 2013). Half of the world’s 110 million tons of reserves exist in China while other sizable deposits are found in Russia, United States, Brazil, India, Australia, Canada, and Greenland. The countries known to be actively mining REE are China, Russia, India, Brazil and Malaysia (Hao et al., 2015). Among these countries, China has the largest REE production, accounting for more than 93% of global supply (Yap, 2015). The critical metal report (Moss et al. 2011) listed 14 economically vital raw materials that are prone to supply disruption and concluded that supply disruption would threaten the goal for cleaner transport and sustainable energy since rare earth metals are used in products using green technology, such as hybrid/electric vehicles, carbon capture systems, wind power generation, low-energy lighting, and energy efficient flat-screen displays."

Introduction In order to improve outputs and to reduce or hold mining costs, many attempts have been made to mechanize the getting and loading of coal in the major coal producing countries, and machines of various kinds and sizes have been designed and manufactured. Some of the most important are: Joy Continuous Miner Joy Coal Auger Goodman Mining Machine Lee-Norse Koal-Master Jeffrey Colmol Cardox Hordsecg Recovery Drill German Coal Plough British Coal Plough with agitated blades M. & C. Samson Stripper AB Meco-Moore Cutter Loader Joy Gloucester Getter The three last named are the chief longwall machines in use and the AB Meco-Moore and the Samson Stripper are doing a good job in their respective applications. It is understood that the Gloucester Getter recently installed in a British colliery also shows reasonable promise. It was felt, however, that to meet the conditions of the mines in Nova Scotia, any machine developed must have certain distinctive characteristics. It must: ( 1) Be able to cut and deliver coal in quantity and of the right sizes ( 2) Be easily manoeuvrable ( 3) Be suitable for longwall operations ( 4) Not interfere with timbers already set ( 5) Cut its own stable (6) Work on reasonably heavy gradients

The engineering geophysicist is not called upon to investigate geological basins or extensive mineralized areas or to probe for data to thousands of feet in depth. Foreword The complete history and early development of the Sullivan mine was fully covered in a paper entitled 'The Development of the Sullivan Mine and Processes for the Treatment of its Ores', prepared by the staff of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada, and presented at the Annual Meeting of the British Columbia Division of the Institute at Trail in October, 1924. At a subsequent meeting at Blairmore, Mr. E. G. Montgomery read a paper on the mine, and in 1926 Mr. M. M. O'Brien brought the subject up to date at the joint meeting of the American and Canadian Institutes at Cranbrook. The present paper is necessarily based largely on these earlier accounts. Discovery and Early Development The outcrop was discovered in 1892 and the property was bonded and later sold to the Sullivan Group Mining Company, of Spokane. From 1896 to 1899, surface stripping and test pits (at A) around the outcrop exposed a vien of sulphides with varying amounts of lead and zinc. In some places, a 35 per cent lead ore carrying 15 ounces of silver was found. These lenses were of commercial value. With the completion of the Kimberley branch of the Canadian Pacific railway, in 1900, some systematic development was started. A shaft l00 feet in depth was sunk (at B). Shaft-house, boiler-room, and compressor-plant were erected, and a steam diamond-drill was put into operation.

The general distribution of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera can be related to its tectonic evolution. The Canadian Cordillera is naturally divisible into five longitudinal tectonic belts within which rocks are broadly similar in type, age and history. From west to east they are the Insular, Coast Crystalline, Intermontane, Omineca and Eastern Marginal belts. Seven classes of metal deposits in the Canadian Cordillera are defined and their characteristics described. These classes are skarn, porphyry, massive sulphide, stratiform, magmatic, copper in basic lavas, and vein deposits. Maps showing the distribution of medal and metal-group concentrations serve to illustrate the relations in space and time between mineralization and geologic evolution.

"With the globalization of the mining industry, many companies are now seeking to invest in underground diamond mines, with the purchase of small diamond pipes being seen as particularly attractive. However, recent experiences in South Africa have shown that many projects fail due to a lack of awareness of the hazards associated with diamond mining. In this paper three significant hazards are dealt with — mud rushes, block crushing, and implementation of an inappropriate mining method. Measures that assist in the prevention of these three hazards are given.IntroductionFor over a hundred years, South Africa has been seen as the centre of the diamond mining industry, possibly having the largest number of operational underground diamond mines in the world. Despite the fact that this industry has been dominated by large mines of De Beers Consolidated Mines Limited, many small underground mines have operated profitably for a number of years, exploiting diamondiferous fissures and pipes. In the last decade there has been renewed interest in these small operations from international companies. However, many of these projects have not realized their full potential owing to a lack of appreciation of the hazards inherent in the operation of a diamond mine.Hazards Associated with Diamond MiningIn the development of a diamond mine, the mining company must be aware of the hazards associated with diamond mining. There are three main hazards: (1) mud rushes; (2) block crushing; and (3) selection of an inappropriate mining method (not a natural hazard, but a planning induced hazard). Each of these hazards will be dealt with in turn in the following sections."

The present method of shipping potash to the myriad of consumers is inefficient, not only because of the extreme and unpredictable nature of seasonal demand, but also because railway car turnaround times are very lengthy. The Floating Train system employs unit trains of potash operating from Saskatchewan mines to distribution warehouses located throughout the six corn-belt states of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin , Illinois, Indiana and Ohio, transshipment points at Thunder Bay and the U.S. waterway network, and, where applicable , large consumers. These unit trains would "float", meaning that they would not originate at the same mine nor terminate at the same warehouse on each trip . They would " float " freely among the origins, destinations and participating railways. The potash would be shipped uniformly throughout the year and usually stored in warehouses located within the six states. It would be subsequently delivered to consumers within a 75-mile radius. Distribution warehouses and rolling stock would be provided by a new company, Potash Distribution Limited, consisting of major potash producers and the Canadian railways. Potash Distribution Limited would be responsible for the distribution of potash from the origin through the warehouses to the final consumer. The additional costs of providing warehouse space and outbound delivery will be offset by the reduction in both rail rates and "peaking" expenses.

Recent analysis has suggested that a balanced recovery profile can improve flotation bank performance. Test work was conducted to test the balanced profile concept at the Penhorwood talc mine near Timmins, Ontario, Canada. Plant trials were devised to determine how to control the recovery profile and the resultant impact on grade and recovery in a rougher bank of four cells. Accompanying gas dispersion measurements revealed a maintenance issue with one cell that was corrected. By manipulating air and frother addition it was possible to bring the bank closer to a balanced recovery profile and the down-the-bank grade/recovery improved. Plant production showed an increased talc grade at similar yield with the balanced profile. The results provide justification for a long term plant trial.

A prolonged breakdown of a critical component can have a significant effect on companies' bottom-line results. As more technologically sophisticated equipment is introduced, maintenance costs become an increasingly important factor for mining companies.Fortunately, sound modern management principles are being used more often in maintenance departments. We have been in business 129 years and like most of the coal mining companies in the United States, since 1969 the majority of our safety improvement efforts had been driven by compliance with the various versions of the Federal Mine Safety and Health Act and the supporting federal regulations. In 2004 Peabody Energy management came to the understanding that in order to achieve our goal of zero incidents, that focus must change. This paper will describe the elements of the journey we began at that point to make the transition to a behavior and systems-based approach to safety management and our efforts to win the minds and hearts of our employees. This journey is undertaken with the goal of making safety truly a way of life for all Peabody Energy employees.

The gold mine sector is presently facing low gold prices as well as technological challenges. Its competitiveness and survival will depend on new mining methods and equipment to improve ore extraction. In 1999, Natural Resources Canada has invested new funds over a period of three years at CANMET?s Experimental Mine to establish the Narrow-Vein Mining Project. A team of engineers and researchers specialised in mining, mechanics and electronics engineering are working to meet the critical need of ore-extraction technology. CANMET?s program in mechanisation and automation for narrow vein mining had, prior to 1999, realised several important achievements, many in co-operation with a consortium of mining companies (Soredem). The investment of new funds in this area will contribute to develop technologies to improve the productivity, as well as health and safety conditions of the narrow vein mining industry. Several important impacts of this project will be monitored. Specifically, a database of methods and equipment used in narrow vein mining is being developed. A key thrust is to identify operators? needs with respect to the development and automation of mining methods and equipment. Based on those needs, research and development projects will be created. The main problems identified following meetings with mine operators are described with a few elements of solution and the Web site created for the broadcast of the results is presented.

"An Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) case study was completed for a mine in Ontario, Canada by SRK Consulting, Inc. The purpose of the study was to analyze the ventilation system to determine whether and which system improvements could reduce the overall electrical power demand of the mine. Financial incentives are offered by the IESO IAP grant program to help cover the capital costs of these improvements. This study included the completion of a full mine ventilation survey as well as measurement of a full suite of electrical parameters of the surface and underground ventilation fans. After these measurements, a base ventilation model was created and established as the system baseline. Changes to the ventilation system were modeled, and their effects on the power demand were projected. The results of the study showed that several improvements were possible which may significantly improve the efficiency of the ventilation system and reduce mine electricity demand.INTRODUCTIONIn 2017, a ventilation study was conducted in accordance with the Independent Electricity System Operator Industrial Accelerator Program (IESO IAP) at a mine in Ontario, Canada. The IESO IAP is designed to assist eligible transmission-connected Canadian companies operating in Ontario to fast track capital investment in major energy conservation projects. The program will provide financial incentives to encourage investment in innovative process changes and equipment retrofits to reduce electricity consumption on the provincial system and to help companies become more competitive by positively impacting their bottom line. There are now four initiatives under the Industrial Accelerator Program:1. Retrofit2. Process & Systems, including Small Capital Projects3. High Performance New Construction4. Energy Managers – a new initiative under the Industrial Accelerator ProgramWithin the program, companies may propose energy saving changes to their current systems where applicable and appropriate. Companies may then be awarded funding to implement the proposed changes. The program allows partial financial compensation to implement certain energy saving changes that would otherwise not be considered due to high capital costs. For larger projects, such as underground mine ventilation systems, a detailed engineering study must be submitted. This study must detail each energy saving change or measure, its savings, and calculate the financial incentives using the IESO IAP Payment Structure. Abstract In a review of the application of electrical logging in Canada, examples are .given of long and short distance correlations by means of the electrical logs. The use of MicroLogging for the determination of permeable and porous formations is explained. The question of log analysis for the quantitative determination of fluid saturation and porosity is .discussed. An example is provided to illustrate the significance of the resistivity gradient. The advantages of the new method of the Laterolog are shown, chiefly for the case of wells filled with high-salinity mud. Introduction Electrical logging techniques developed rapidly in Canada at the time an intensive drilling activity started for the exploitation of the Devonian series in Alberta, namely, at the beginning of 1947. The conventional service was soon thereafter supplemented with the latest technica1 improvements. Canada has been among the first regions to take advantage of MicroLogging*, which has proved a most powerful .tool for the investigation of permeable and porous formations; also, the more recent development known as the Laterolog has ?been introduced in Canada. The Laterolog provides a better determination of .the formations, particularly in the case of salty mud where the conventional logging is greatly handicapped. The various methods of electrical logging are now commonly known in oil industry and have been described in numerous publications ( 1) ( 2) (3).

"The outlook for Eastern Canada is decreasing coal production over the next few years; however, a reappraisal of the long-term requirements and increased prices of coal could lead to a revitalizing of the industry. The market for Western coal is expanding and is expected to exceed 50 million tons per year in the metallurgical and thermal power fields. Western coal reserves are currently estimated at 119 billion tons. Technical developments in Eastern Canada include a shearer and gate-end support system to mechanically cut the stall and brushing at the tail-end of a longwall. In Western Canada, the most modern equipment is used in mining, beneficiating and shipping coal. Results to date on the underground hydraulic experiments exceed expectations. The importance of reclamation is recognized and plans have been made to restore and re-vegetate disturbed areas and mine dumps. In Eastern Canada, experiments were started to determine the feasibility of coal reclamation from mine dumps, including one dump that is on fire. The Mining Research Centre, Mines Branch, continued to conduct research work oriented toward solving Canadian mining problems The Western office of the Centre, opened in 1970, was set up primarily to study problems associated with a resurgent coal industry."
