A new warehouse built with prefabricated components over an area underlined by soft marine soil deposits started showing differential settlements well before its completion. Its 103 spread footings carrying up to 4,000kN (450t) axial loads had been cast on jet-grouted columns extending and penetrating a layer of sand at a depth of 10m (33ft). Investigations performed to assess the wholeness and consistency of the jet-grouted columns revealed a state of loose jet-grouted masses and uncontrolled, off target migrations of the jet-grouting. Most of the jet-grouting itself was settling. The following remedial solutions were suggested: 1. Construction of new and better controlled jet-grouted columns. 2. Cement-based soil grouting. 3. Expanding resin injections. 4. Minipiles drilled-through the existing footings and reaching into a denser layer of sand existing at 23m below grade. Remedial solution 1. was immediately discarded due to cost and the possibility of a repeating failure in this non-granular and highly compressible soil. Tests of remedial solutions 2. and 3. were carried out. The outcome of the grouting was monitored by Electro Resistivity Tomography (ERT) (Bares et al., 2003), an innovative 3D electro tomography procedure showing where grout had been actually placed and its migrations off target. A successful 4,000kN (450t) load tests confirmed the validity of the solution. Finally, upon the completion of a successful load test, solution 4. was chosen. It supplied the highest degree of reliability thanks to the ease of controlling the final and actual location of the minipiles and to the higher safety factor provided. All remedial work to install the minipiles was eventually performed inside the building. Additional load tests and settlement measurements confirmed the adequacy and success of the chosen solution.

We used a Remtek survey in Glenrock and had very good luck with it when we first started the initial investigation. We would have loved to have used that more but my understanding is the equipment is hard to find. It also requires a flooded mine workings. If you're in a dry mine the communication between the two holes is not quite as successful.

Europe’s second-largest seaport has installed a new combi wall consisting of pipe piles, sheet piles and inclined shaft grouted piles to support it. The new Liebherr piling rig with swinging leader was used to drive shaft grouted piles into a very dense soil layer of sand with glauconite. The 60 m Liebherr swinging leader was suspended at an inclination of 45° via a suspension frame and suspension ropes from the crawler crane. This inclined installation of shaft grouted piles via freely hanging swinging leader, as used for this project, is unique in Belgium. Moreover, the pile length of 43 m is a novelty for this type of pile. Shaft grouted piles consist of a steel profile with a separate box-like pile shoe with an open top. A thin grout is injected via an injection pipe during driving and emerges just above the pile shoe. As the pile is driven further down, so compressing the ground, the space above the pile foot is immediately filled with grout under pressure. This piling system is ideally suited for the transfer of high tensile loadings. It is a method to increase geotechnical load-bearing capacity and to reduce negative skin friction during pile driving.

Oklahoma City is undergoing a replacement program for an existing 66in (1.675m) water pipeline that conveys raw water from Atoka Reservoir to the City. This pipeline currently crosses the Canadian River on elevated piers and is subject to flood hazards. To replace the existing pipeline and mitigate flood damage concerns, two parallel microtunnels will be constructed below the river channel. Access is from construction shafts located near the midpoint of the tunnels; opposing drives are launched from each shaft. This geometry dictated shafts of significant depth – exceeding 120 ft. (37m). To accommodate the casing pipe segments and microtunneling machines, a minimum shaft diameter of approximately 34 ft. (10.4m) was required. Due to the difficult geologic setting, a reinforced secant pile compression ring is specified by contract in the top 70 ft. (21.3m) of these construction shafts to provide a very low permeability support system.

Diaphragm wall technique is usually used to construct structural elements in the ground, commonly used for retention systems, permanent foundation elements or deep ground-water barriers, named Cut-Off-Walls (COW). It can be anticipated that global urbanization and increasing demands on environmental considerations will need to be accommodated in underground space in the future. These trends show an increasing requirement for diaphragm walling in even more complex conditions, especially in inner-city applications with limited space. Therefore, there is the demand to minimize the size of equipment to accommodate such projects. Following this demand, a new trench cutter system, the so-called CUBE System, was recently developed. The complete trench cutter system has been fit into container size dimensions so that it can work in very limited space conditions. In addition, complex conditions in terms of space limitations require specifically adapted solutions for slurry, spoil, reinforcement and concrete handling and the related logistics to ensure smooth production. Due to the limited space requirements, the impact on the surrounding environment is limited. As the system is electric driven, an additional reduction of carbon footprint can be expected. First tests of the system have been carried out and the results will be shared. The paper will explain the construction process and the specific challenges and experiences made for these extreme conditions.

The laboratory tests indicated low permeability but as I said, as a rule, the permeability in the field has been found to be higher. A high permeability has also been found when doing back calculations of rates of settlements in different cases. But as I also said, there's a need for further studies in this area.

"The CDM-LODIC method(Low Displacement and Control method), a modified the CDM(Cement Deep Mixing) method, reduces the ground displacement through the removal of in-situ soil equivalent to the amount of slurry injection using the continuous auger flight attached on the shaft above the conventional the CDM mixing tool. The reduction of ground displacement minimizes the impact on adjacent buildings and other infrastructures. Since the development of the CDM-LODIC in 1985, this method has been used for more than 900 projects with total volume of improved soils exceeding 5.3 million yd3 (7 million m3). The ground displacement that could be caused by deep soil mixing is controlled by balancing the volume of discharged soil and the volume of slurry injected for soil mixing. This paper presents the ground improvement work for the Sanriku Coast Expressway Project using the CDM-LODIC method to 1) control the ground displacement during ground improvement to minimize the impact to existing buildings and facilities and 2) utilize low height CDM-LODIC equipment to avoid potential damage to critical facilities in the vicinity of ground improvement area and avoid interference on the normal operation of the Ishinomaki Red Cross Hospital.INTRODUCTIONSanriku Coast Expressway is a reconstructed highway, which is part of an early restoration program to recover from the Eastern Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011. This highway extends 223 mile (359 km) and connects the Pacific Coast regions of three prefecture of North Eastern Japan as shown in Figure 1. Along a section between Yamoto - Ishinomaki road, the highway was expanded from two lanes to four lanes to mitigate traffic congestion for the adjacent city center and hospital and to serve as an efficient transportation route for emergency or disaster relief needs as shown in Figure 2. Deep mixing ground improvement with an area replacement ratio of 50% was designed to provide settlement control under the new fill embankment of the expanded highway as shown in Figure 3. The original CDM treatment layout using 5.2ft (1.6 m) diameter columns is shown in Figure 4."

"Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) entrusted to implement Monorail Systems in various parts of Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) with the objective to supplement the present transport system in MMR. The stretch of Monorail is starting from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (SGMC) and extending up to Chembur Railway Station, divided into 2 phases. Construction of Phase 1 (Chembur to Wadala Depot) is complete and Phase 2 (Wadala Depot to SGMC) is under construction.Monorail runs on prestressed girder (guide beam) of span ranging from 20m to 28m supported on pier founded upon group of end bearing piles embedded in rock, pile group ranging from 2-4 piles of diameter 1000mm each.For the purpose of site characterization, geo-technical investigations were carried out along the alignment of Monorail system as mentioned above. These investigations included field and laboratory tests. The subsurface strata mainly consist of silty sand, gravel, underlain by marine clay extending up to stronger basalt rock with volcanic breccia. Overburden consisting of mainly marine clay ranging from 5.5m to 11m at all locations within the influence zone of settlement.The existing rigid pavement along of Sion-Koliwada and Anik-Wadala were constructed about 5 years prior to the construction of Monorail piers. Before laying the rigid pavement, to improve the geotechnical strength of subsoil (mainly marine clay), ground improvement using stone columns was undertaken by MMRDA. In light of limited right of way, the Monorail piers have been constructed in the median portion of the road. The line became operational on February 2014, in few months it was noticed that, in the vicinity of the Monorail piers, along Sion-Koliwada link and Anik-Wadala link, the Road Pavement Quality Concrete (PQC) panels adjacent to the Monorail piers started showing distress in form of nonuniform settlement of the concrete panels.Effect of pile foundation on pavements/PQC slab distress and possible causes of distress were investigated. Initially the distress was thought to be upheaval of monorail pier cap, but further investigations revealed the same to be soil settlement occurring over time. This paper describes the investigation carried out for identifying the cause of this settlement."

"During 2016, foundation piling works were completed to allow for the construction of a production and storage/handling terminal in Rotterdam. It is there that steel foundations will be produced for offshore wind farms and the oil and gas industry. Several Dutch contracting companies were involved in constructing: foundations for an assembly hall, a barge quay and a deep-sea quay wall. For the hall foundations, cast in situ concrete vibro piles were created. Open ended steel casing piles were also installed due to very high cone resistances which made it impossible to perform cast in situ piles in certain areas. The quay wall was constructed with open ended steel casing piles in combination with sheet piles. A deep-sea quay wall was also constructed to provide enough storage area for the offshore mono piles. This project was unique and challenging due to the use of different foundation technologies in challenging circumstances and soil conditions. This paper will give an insight into the Dutch use of varying foundation piling techniques for deep-sea quay wall constructions. It can be concluded that even experienced local contractors can be surprised by variations in soil conditions. It will also show how the contractors adapted to the difficult circumstances.PROJECT OUTLINEThe project consisted of a barge quay near the assembly hall with a length of 500 metres, width of 42 metres and a height of 35 metres, and a deep-sea quay wall 480 metres in length. This paper concentrates on the foundation works for the construction of the deep-sea quay wall. The construction of the deep-sea quay wall consisted of a combination of open ended steel casing piles with a diameter of Ø 1420 mm and a wall thickness varying between 21 and 23 mm. The lengths of the steel casing piles varied between 32 and 37 metres. Between the steel casing piles triple PU 28 sheet piles were installed with lengths varying between 26 and 29 metres. In the Netherlands, a combination of open ended steel piles and sheet piles is known as a “combi wall”. For the deep-sea quay wall a steel combi wall was shored with steel H- section profiles that were driven in a raked position whilst being injected with grout, so called MV-piles. The MV piles for this project consisted of steel HEB 600 sections with lengths from 52 up to 59 metres and were installed with angles varying between 42.5 and 47.5 degrees. "The Brickworks Marketplace Project is a significant shopping centre development in inner north west Adelaide constructed by Badge Constructions in 2014 and 2015. The site was a former brickworks with a deep pit containing various extents of uncontrolled fill which was to remain on site, and with a remaining void up to 6 m in depth. The existing uncontrolled fill was improved using the High Energy Impact Compaction system, and the pit backfilled using a quarry crusher byproduct selected by trial and a recycled crushed concrete and bricks and compacted in deep lifts. This approach resulted in significant savings in compaction time, cost and building foundations. The settlements of various parts of the completed works have been monitored since February 2015 and this monitoring has demonstrated small settlements which meet the user’s constraints.INTRODUCTIONThe Torrensville Brickwork Markets project involved the transformation of a former brickworks and clay pit site into a regional 17,000m2 shopping centre, opening in June 2015.The site was a former brickworks with adjoining clay borrow pit. The clay pit had been partially backfilled over many years with ‘uncontrolled’ fill comprising ‘clean’ soil, bricks and kiln dust typically of the following thicknesses:??of the order of up to 7 m to 10 m but locally up to 15 m in the western part of the site??2 m to 5 m in the south-eastern part of the site; and??less than 0.5 m in the north-eastern part of the siteAnecdotal reports suggested compaction of some of the fill may have been undertaken, although this not able to be confirmed nor records obtained.Initially it was proposed to take up the existing uncontrolled fill, sort and recompact or remove to landfill, followed by backfilling in conventional means over 500,000 cubic metres of imported filling to a thickness of up to approximately 6m to backfill the former pit. This work represented a significant cost and was not economically viable.During early negotiations, the contractor proposed an alternative to retain and ground improve the existing filling on site, and to backfill the pit with fill placed and compacted in deep lifts, thereby significantly improving the economics, environmental and community impacts of the proposed works.The developer agreed to the proposal with the following performance criteria:??a settlement of =10 mm after 10 passes by the Impact Compactor (on existing subgrade areas);??a bearing capacity of 250 kPa for high level footings;??a maximum long term differential settlement of 40 mm (measured over 16 m), ie. 1 in 400; and??a minimum modulus of 40MPa."

"One of the ways to increase the bearing capacity of a piled foundation is to take into account soil resistance in the base of the raft. Piled raft is similar to shallow foundation and can transfer significant part of the load into the base. It allows reducing number of piles in the foundation or shortening their length. As a result building terms and foundation costs reduce considerably. However, nowadays in Belarus there is no reliable and suitable in design practice methods of calculation of piled-raft foundations. In order to devise such methods we have analyzed the results of piled foundation tests fulfilled by various authors up to date and have carried out series of field and laboratory investigations in Minsk. The most important results of the investigations are provided in the article. Methods of analysis of piled-raft foundations are described.INTRODUCTIONPile foundations of late years are used extensively in connection with the increased number of storeys and load increment on the soil. Often pile foundations are applied in comparative favorable ground conditions at the surface of the base. In such cases the increase of the bearing capacity of foundations and the reduction of construction cost are questions of primary importance for designers. Such bases can be considered as separate fragments of the piled-raft foundation. Prof. A. A. Bartolomey had tested more than 70 pile foundations of natural size in different ground conditions. The length of piles was 3 12 m (?????????? 1995). The observed results show that the raft carries about 10 12% of the total load applied when length of piles is over 9 m and space between piles is a=3d. Bearing capacity of the raft is about 35 40% when the length of piles is 5 8 m and a=6d. Prof. Golubkov has tested 2 prismatic piles (cross section: 350x350 mm, L=3800 m) and 2 pyramidal piles (cross section: head - 600x600 mm, foot – 100x100 mm, L=3000 m). One of the piles was tested with a raft and the other one without a raft. Significant influence of the raft on total bearing capacity was determined, the more the settlement was the more it influenced on the raft. Bearing capacity of the raft was 27,5% in foundation with prismatic pile and 42% with pyramidal pile (???????? et al. 1971)."

"Due to the reunion of Western and Eastern Germany in the late 80’s, a multitude of infrastructure projects had to be executed. A good portion of these projects required improvement of the motorway system. In the southern region of Leipzig, in the eastern part of Germany, it was required to connect two existing motorways. Parts of the new motorway pass old strip mining areas. These strip mining areas consist of up to 70m thick backfill material. Especially the upper 20m are very inhomogeneous soil material with a very low bearing capacity. In order to increase the bearing capacity, to decrease the differential settlements and to homogenize the soil parameters, soil improvement using sand-gravel columns was required. Bauer Spezialtiefbau GmbH executed the installation of approx. 711,000 linear meters of columns with a length from 5 m to 25 m. For the project, 11 rigs with frame leads up to 40m were used to install the 43,000 columns with a diameter of 0.8m in 27 weeks.1. "The University of Missouri performed a lateral load test program involving 32 drilled shaft load tests for the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT). Tests were performed at two MoDOT geotechnical research sites, and all shafts were founded in shale. Shafts were instrumented to measure the displacement of the shaft head, and the structural response of each shaft was interpreted from strain gage data and from ShapeAccelArray (SAA) data. The SAA is a chain of rigid segments with sensors that use MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) technology to measure the tilt of each segment/joint. The measuring principle of the SAA is therefore similar to that of an inclinometer. The SAA device was placed in a casing installed in the center of each test shaft to provide a continuous record of deflection along the length of the shaft throughout each test.Bending moment profiles were calculated from strain gage data and from SAA data. Interpretation of bending moments from measurements of strain (via strain gages) and displacement (via SAA) is a nontrivial exercise, primarily because the bending stiffness, EI, is nonlinear and greatly influenced by concrete cracking, which is difficult to predict. The procedure used for this work predicted values of bending stiffness along the length of the shaft as a function of the bending curvature, which was interpreted from the SAA data. Values for bending stiffness as a function of curvature were computed using Ensoft LPile v2012. Bending moment profiles from SAA data were typically similar to those from strain gage data. The SAA bending moment profiles were often “noisier” than the strain gage bending moment profiles, but the SAA bending moment profiles had more data points since the SAA chain was continuous from the top to the bottom of each shaft."

The Highway 146 Bridge Expansion Project across the Clear Creek Channel in Houston, Texas was designed on driven precast concrete piles. However, during construction, the piles along one side of the bridge along the main channel encountered obstructions and couldn’t be installed. These obstructions turned out to be the remnants of a previous bridge foundation at this location, which was unknown to the designers since that bridge had been demolished 40 years ago. Those old foundations were massive 20 ft by 40 ft (6 m by 12 m) pile caps 11 ft (3.3 m) thick supported on precast concrete piles 37 to 55 ft (11 to 17 m) long. The foundation re-design for these locations involved installing a single 78 inch (2 m) diameter drilled shaft up to 125 ft (38 m) long to replace the originally planned driven pile supported pile cap. The drilled shafts would need to be installed within very tight tolerances since they were supporting a single bridge column directly above it. In addition to drilling through the obstructions, this work would need to be completed from barges in 30 ft (9 m) of water capable of dealing with both the current and tides affecting this area. The shafts were installed using a multi-step process. The first step involved coring a larger diameter 100 inch (2.5 m) hole through the reinforced concrete pile cap and removing the concrete inside. This was followed by the installation of a 72 ft (22 m) long permanent casing to and removing the soil and existing precast piles inside. Finally, the drilled shaft excavations were advanced to the completion depths (uncased) using bentonite slurry as the support fluid.

This study presents results based on the Pile Installation Demonstration Project (PIDP) that was conducted as a part of the East Span San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge Seismic Safety Project. For the three full-scale pile installations, two different high-energy hydraulic hammers were selected for the installation. However, these hammers may not have sufficient energy to drive these large diameter piles at their ultimate capacity following long-term set-up. Nevertheless, these hammers were selected because, soil plug behavior, the generation of excess pore pressures and remolding of soil during driving were expected to reduce the shaft and end bearing resistance, and therefore reduce the energy required to drive these piles to design penetration. Data collected during continuous installation driving and after a series of re-strikes at different set-up times ranging from 1 to 33 days were used as input data for CAPWAP. These results were used to estimate the soil resistance along the pile length and at the toe of the pile, and the soil pile set-up behavior. Validity of the procedures used to predict the soil resistance to driving and predicted blow counts were verified with the field observed blow counts and the energy that was delivered to the pile. Based on combined CAPWAP analyses, the soil pile set-up with time was estimated and compared with results of other methods currently available in the literature for predicting the soil pile set-up rate.

Weidlinger Associates was retained to evaluate the foundations supporting ten oil storage tanks at a tank farm on the east coast. The tanks were constructed over the site of a landfill which was underlain by deep organic deposits. The tanks were typically 48 ft. in height and ranged in diameter from 60 to 150 ft. The tanks were supported on both wood and steel pipe piles. After more than 35 years of service, an inspection found that up to 25 percent of the piles had separated from the mat foundation. The operations at the facility were temporarily stopped pending further investigation. Weidlinger developed comprehensive finite element models of the foundations for each tank and used random generators to conduct Monte Carlo simulations the range of scenarios of detached support conditions since it was not possible to survey all the piles below the tanks. To confirm the modeled performance and verify stability, each tank was also load tested using water with electronic instrumentation installed by Geo-Instruments. The instrumentation provided real time, web based monitoring during testing in areas which would otherwise be inaccessible during loading. Through inspection, complex modeling and sophisticated load testing, Weidlinger and Geo-Instruments were able to show that all but one of the tanks could safely be put back into service. This paper details the analysis, Monte Carlo simulations and instrumentation and load testing performed for this unique project.

The deep mixing method was developed in Japan and put into practice in the middle of 1970s. Since then, the wet and dry type methods have been applied for various improvement purposes in Japan. One stork of mixing tool produces a column shape of stabilized soil in a ground. By the series of productions, arbitrary shape of improved ground can be constructed by overlapping each columns. It is specified to complete the overlapping within 24 hours in order to ensure the tight connection of the columns. However, it can not be completed within the specific time in some cases due to bad weather or machine trouble, which causes a cold joint in the improved ground. In this study, the influence of the cold joint to the behavior of the block type improved ground is examined by a series of centrifuging model tests and FEM analyses. It is found that the ground behavior is influenced by the position of the cold joint, where the cold joint at the sea side shows a little influence to the behavior but one at the port side causes large decrease in the stability of the improved ground.

Replacing aboveground structural members and electrical components is relatively simple even under live conditions. However, the replacement or repair of tower foundations, many of which are in remote locations, has been a problem that has caused difficulties for power utilities trying to operate on a budget while also avoiding costly and unpopular power outages.With thousands of miles of aging transmission lines needing life extension work, Piling & Civil Australia (PCA) has developed a patented system of upgrading the foundations with micropiles while under live-line conditions without requiring costly outages. The system is seen as revolutionary by power utilities, allowing the utilities to extend the life of their existing assets until demand increases to warrant the construction of a new line. PCA has been working on a potential solution with Powerlink Queensland for the past 5 years to develop a quick and cost-effective foundation replacement system that can extend the life of its existing asset base anywhere from an additional 5 years to 50 years.With design support from Quanta Subsurface, USA, PCA recently completed the foundation replacement of 26 lattice tower foundations in the Townsville region of North Queensland. "The years following World War II were nation building years in Australia. Soldiers returned from the European and Asian theatres of war sparking a major infrastructure construction boom. Dams and highways were built to keep up with the growth of towns and cities, which were bursting at the seams, not just from the returning soldiers settling down with their families but also from the many waves of refugees from war torn areas around the globe.The demand for electricity generation and distribution required for the growing population sparked the expansion of the national power grid with new high-voltage transmission towers appearing across the landscape. However, with an original design life of 50 years, those transmission lines constructed in the 1950s are nearing, or are at the end of, their anticipated service life.In recent years, the Australian power distribution network has changed from a period of high construction activity in greenfield high-voltage lines to a period that is now focused on reducing cost and maintaining existing assets. Replacing aboveground structural members and electrical components is relatively simple even under live conditions. However, the replacement or repair of tower foundations, many of which are in remote locations, has been a problem that has caused difficulties for power utilities trying to operate on a budget while also avoiding costly and unpopular power outages. With thousands of miles of aging transmission lines needing life extension work, Piling & Civil Australia (PCA) has developed a patented system of upgrading the foundations with micropiles while under live-line conditions without requiring costly outages. The system is seen as revolutionary by power utilities, allowing the utilities to extend the life of their existing assets until demand increases to warrant the construction of a new line. PCA has been working on a potential solution with Powerlink Queensland for the past 5 years to develop a quick and cost-effective foundation replacement system that can extend the life of its existing asset base anywhere from an additional 5 years to 50 years.With design support from Quanta Subsurface, USA, PCA recently completed the foundation replacement of 26 lattice tower foundations in the Townsville region of North Queensland. Effective chemical grouting represents a technical and economic solution to many challenges related to soil stabilization and blocking the flow of water. Chemical grouts are facing increasing demands in durability, environmental impact and value. To better meet these challenges, a novel and cost effective process was developed to produce a sodium silicate that increases the ratio (i.e. silica to alkali) beyond what has been used in traditional silicate-based grouts. The move to a lower sodium form of silicate was anticipated to have two desirable performance enhancements; a reduction in leachable sodium and improvement in the durability of the silicate grout. An in-depth study was performed at the University of Western Ontario Geotechnical Research Centre to quantify improvement in durability as well as other performance properties such as compressive strength. The study began by first modelling the gelation time and reaction kinetics of the high ratio sodium silicate over a range of silicate concentrations using two different setting agents as well as with/without a hardener. As expected, reducing the level of sodium produced a much more water resistant grout. These same formulations also showed a four order magnitude reduction in permeability. Somewhat surprising, test results showed the higher ratio silicate having much higher compressive strength. At the time of this abstract, the high ratio silicate was moving to the trial stage for geotechnical applications while the petroleum industry was further along with several successful field trials for water blocking as well as cement remediation. This paper will review the chemistry, testing and features of this next generation form of sodium silicate. Introduction Sodium silicate based grouts have been used for decades for soil stabilization and water control. Over the years, several silicate-based systems have been tailored for specific application conditions to maximize performance and reduce cost. Past research has also focused on the selection of setting agents and hardeners for silicate grouts. A constant in the development effort has been the grade of sodium silicate. The vast majority of chemical grouts have been formulated using a ~3.2 ratio sodium silicate. As a very brief overview on the meaning of “ratio” and why it is so important to performance properties. The ratio describes the proportion of sand to alkali or SiO2:Na2O used to make different grades of sodium silicate. Comparing a 2.2 ratio to a 3.2 ratio, it is easier to polymerize and set the 3.2 ratio. Upon setting and forming a silica gel, the system has higher compressive strength values and improved durability with a reduced level of syneresis (i.e. shrinkage). This leads to the question if 3.2 is better than 2.2 why not go to 4.2 or higher?
