The Waterman Hospital in Tavares, Florida was undergoing an expansion and required a below-grade excavation immediately adjacent to the Emergency Department. This wing of the hospital was under high traffic and required uninterrupted access for ambulances as well as helicopter landings. The below-grade expansion was also next to a part of the hospital which did not have a basement. Tiedback soldier beams and wood lagging were used as the earth retention system where the shoring line was not immediately adjacent to the existing structure. Structural jet grout underpinning was used to support the existing building and to serve as the earth retention system in the more sensitive area. Jet grout underpinning was chosen to minimize movements, loss of ground and settlement of the structure which was bearing on clean sand deposits. This paper will discuss the design, quality control and construction of jet grouting and its application to this project. INTRODUCTION Project Background The expansion of the Waterman Hospital included an addition to the Emergency Department. This addition was located adjacent to the existing hospital building in a congested area with limited access. The north side of the addition was bordered by the ambulance drop-off area. The south side of the addition was bordered by the helipad landing area. Both areas had to remain open and fully accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"There is an old joke at Moretrench that defines dewatering as “that element of an underground construction project, which, when disregarded, will generate the low bidder.” Sigmund Freud wrote that all jokes are true, and the kernel of truth behind this one is that dewatering is often misunderstood or neglected until the last possible moment in the life of a project. The purpose of this article is to describe commonly used dewatering methods and to clear up a pervasive but fundamental misunderstanding about how to determine the amount of dewatering effort required for a project. The Tools of DewateringDewatering may be divided into two broad categories: (1) methods that remove water from the excavation after it has already entered and (2) methods that seek to exclude or intercept the water before it reaches the excavation. The former is generally self-performed by general or earth moving contractors using sumps and ditches, while the latter is usually done by a specialty contractor. SumpsProperly installed sumps can be an effective and economical way to control water inflow into a site. In this technique, groundwater is allowed to enter the site before being pumped away. Advantages of this method include lost cost, easy availability of equipment and the fact that a general contractor can self-perform the dewatering. However, caution should be used when deciding whether to use this method, and consideration should be given to the following factors:1. How will the soil behave under seepage forces? Will it run, potentially causing ground loss?2. How much groundwater lowering is required? If the groundwater only needs to be lowered a few feet, using sumps will be much more practical than for a situation that requires significant drawdown.3. Will the excavation subgrade soften or otherwise be damaged by allowing water to run over it?4. Is my workforce skilled enough to implement and manage the sumping plan?In the photo, the sump is capturing groundwater that has already entered the excavation by traveling under the sheets. In this instance, the house in the background of the photo was eventually purchased by the project owner after sustaining damage due to ground loss."

The arena for dispute settlement outside of the courts is increasing day by day - contracts, especially construction and civil engineering contracts, are written containing arbitration clauses for settling disputes - the very drafting of standard forms of contract, do in some instances by their very construction, create an ambiguity as to intent and provide a breeding ground for dispute. I come from a land far across the sea - the most southern land before the South Pole. Being a young country, 150 years old, we are still progressing - being far removed from the trouble free zones of the world and nuclear free we enjoy a lifestyle second to none.

Collins Engineers has been researching and implementing the use of drones on Civil Engineering Projects since 2015. Applications include bridge inspection, asset management, mapping, construction site management and emergency response. Recently this technology was used to map and model construction sites with deep foundations to verify and quantify designs. The ability to collect and use large amounts of data is transforming our world. Drone hardware and software is being used to capture and digitally replicate assets, giving owners unprecedented ability to visualize and manage their projects. Our teams help owners collect and process drone data into deliverables to be analyzed, annotated, stored, and shared. The use of drones can transform the way projects are managed and can improve project workflows. Data collected with drones can be processed into a digital twin of any project site or asset. This digital twin provides owners with a three-dimensional geometrically and geospatially accurate model. These models can be annotated and tagged with information that can be stored and shared locally or on cloud-based platforms. The data can be exported and used in a wide variety of CAD and GIS platforms. Goals When considering the use of UAS for several items need to be considered when establishing project goals. Safety Drones can be used to reduce job site safety risks in two ways. The first is that use of the drone can remove personnel from harm’s way. Surveyors and other project staff will traditionally walk the site to collect survey and other site information. These efforts can be replaced with the use of a drone eliminating much of the need for personnel to be on the job site itself which improves safety. The other way safety can be improved is that a digital model of a job site can be created on a daily or weekly basis that can be quickly analyzed for safety hazards. This analysis could be done remotely by safety officers to identify job site hazards which can then be corrected before injuries happen. Improved Deliverables Perhaps the most important reason to incorporate drones into project workflows it the ability to improve the project deliverables. Drones have the ability to quickly collect large amounts of high quality data which can be processed into orthomosaics, point clouds and 3D models that give engineers and project managers the information they need to make better decisions on design or project management.

"Through reliability-based calibration of larger pile load test databases, recent developments of the Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) methods, which include geotechnical load and resistance factors for deep foundations design, have advanced the state of practice for geotechnical engineering. These load test databases upon which the current geotechnical load and resistance factors have been developed are limited, however, and do not provide sufficient data to support the development of resistance factors for uplift (tension) pile capacity. As such, some recommended resistance factors for uplift capacity estimation methods are simply derived by reducing the recommended resistance factors for piles in compression by a factor of 0.10.The results of three (3) tension loading tests performed to failure on 508 mm (20- in) square precast, prestressed concrete piles, driven though granular soil in southeastern Massachusetts, are presented and compared to static pile capacity calculations and dynamic analyses performed using the Pile Driving Analyzer (PDA) during installation. These results are presented along with current recommended LRFD resistance factors for driven piles under uplift (tension) loading conditions. These comparisons offer an assessment of the applicability and limitations of current resistance factors methods for piles under uplift loading and may be useful additions to the existing database for future calibrations of LRFD resistance factors for driven prestressed concrete piles in sand.IntroductionIn 2010, two (2) natural draft cooling towers were constructed by Kiewit (Kiewit) Construction Company of Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey at the Brayton Point Power Station in Somerset, Massachusetts. These massive 500 foot tall, 400 foot diameter cooling towers were designed to convert the existing “open loop” system into a “closed loop system” thereby dramatically reducing the thermal impact to Mt. Hope Bay.Based on design guidance from the German VBG Design Code and the Massachusetts State Building Code (MSBC), tension (i.e. uplift) and lateral loads due to wind loads and design seismic events represented the critical loading conditions.Weighing approximately 190,000 kips upon completion, the cooling tower loads are transferred to 44 foundation nodes (i.e. pile caps) evenly spaced along ring beams which run the circular perimeter of each tower base. Each pile cap node was designed to resist a 2,000 ton compression load, 200 tons in tension (i.e. uplift), and 600 tons in the lateral direction."

"In city center sites around the world, and in particular in London, foundation reuse is becoming increasingly widespread as the ground is filled with detritus from previous developments. This paper sets out a systematic framework to consider the need for and benefits of foundation reuse and key issues to be resolved for foundation reuse to be successfully adopted on redevelopment projects. Once foundation reuse has been identified as a potential foundation solution there are several key stages in the design and construction process where the decision to reuse foundations needs to be assessed. The paper concludes by emphasising the importance of ensuring that the foundations being installed now can more easily be reused in the future.INTRODUCTIONThe concept of re-using foundations is not new, and has been adopted on an isolated project-byproject basis for many years. However, over the past decade, interest in the potential of reusing existing piles and caissons within Europe has increased significantly, with a growing interest in the United States of America and Japan. The need has been driven by necessity: on many urban sites the space available for new foundations diminishes with each new set of piles, and these problems can only grow in the future.Initiatives such as the European Union's RuFUS (Re-use of Foundations for Urban Sites) research project have resulted in identification of the key issues for technical viability and risk that have previously hampered potential foundation reuse projects.There is a need to define a systematic approach to the reuse of foundations so that the risks associated with reuse can be identified, managed and mitigated. This requires improvements in knowledge to provide confidence in the long term behaviour of the foundation support and address the risks involved in reusing existing foundations to overcome perceived obstacles in making foundation reuse a realistic option for many sites."

"With the increasing demand for electricity, and requirements to generate this power cleanly, more producers are turning towards hydroelectric power. A project in Iowa currently under construction will retrofit an existing Army Corps of Engineers Dam with a hydroelectric generating facility. The design of the intake structure requires the construction of a diaphragm retaining wall. The T-shaped diaphragm wall elements retain an unbalanced fill height up to 21.3 meters (70 feet). The design required a single production element be constructed, tested, and instrumented prior to beginning construction of the rest of the elements. The testing included extensive concrete mix design development, coring, and Cross Hole Sonic Logging. Installed in the other production elements are 10 inclinometers, 4 pressure cells, 4 piezometers, and multiple survey monuments. Some of these instruments require manual readings while most are monitored by an automatic data acquisition system and instantly transferred to a website providing real-time graphical display of the data. This paper will discuss the construction of the diaphragm wall from the contractor’s perspective when working on a site only large enough for two service cranes and a Hydromill excavation unit, without any storage area on the construction pad, describe the testing performed and the quality control procedures employed, and investigate the information gained from the automated instruments providing real time measurement readings.INTRODUCTIONIn 1964 the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) constructed a dam by raising the surface grade approximately 34.7 meters (114 feet) above the natural ground line using a combination of fill types. This earthen dam stretched slightly longer than a mile intersecting the flow of the existing Des Moines River. The center of the dam is a concrete spillway consisting of 12 monolith sections. On each end, three of the sections extend 42.6 meters (140 feet) from the spillway to transition from the concrete dam sections to the earthen dam section. Adjacent to these three sections on the East end is where the contractor is actively working, for a private developer under a lease agreement with USACE, on this site to convert it to a Hydroelectric facility licensed for an output of 36.4 megawatts, enough power to meet the needs of about 18,000 homes. To create this, a powerhouse structure, housing two vertical Kaplan turbines is being added to the downstream side of the existing dam. From the power house, two penstock pipes will be cored through the existing concrete monolith sections and connect to the Intake structure on the upstream side of the dam. Protecting and reinforcing the dam adjacent to the intake structure is a new diaphragm wall. This wall is constructed using T-shaped diaphragm elements, acting as a cantilever retaining wall for the intake platform. Figure 1 shows a diagram of the upstream features of the construction."

The city of Christchurch, New Zealand is predominantly founded on alluvial sediments consisting of interbedded layers of loose to medium dense sand, soft to stiff silt and clay mixtures, and pockets of organics. These soil deposits have high liquefaction potential. Following the 2010/2011 Canterbury Earthquake Sequence several ground improvement trials were undertaken within Christchurch to understand the effectiveness of different types of ground improvement in these silty sand geological conditions. This paper presents a discussion of a stone column ground improvement trial undertaken at a Christchurch site with high fines content soils. Stone columns were installed using two types of installation methods and a range of Area Replacement Ratios (ARR) to assess the effectiveness of these ground improvement methods in high fines content soils as well as the influence on the type of installation method. Pre- and post-column installation CPTs, seismic Dilatometer Tests (sDMTs), cross-hole shear wave velocity tests, and plate load tests have been undertaken to assess the effectiveness of the ground improvement. Results of the testing are presented in this paper. INTRODUCTION This paper presents the results of a stone column ground improvement trial undertaken in Christchurch, New Zealand (Fig.1). In 2010 and 2011, four large earthquakes (greater than magnitude 5.9) and thousands of smaller aftershocks occurred in the greater Christchurch region. These events are referred to as the Canterbury Earthquake Sequence (CES). Liquefaction occurred across large portions of the city during the stronger earthquakes, particularly the February 2011 event. Following the CES a large amount of data was collected across the city including the location and volume of sand boils, and the location and magnitude of ground cracks. Additionally, data from thousands of ground investigations have been uploaded into a public database. As a result, there is clear evidence that silt and silty sands liquefy in addition clean sands. The CES and resulting liquefaction motivated a series of studies and trials from different organisations aiming to better understand the available technologies for liquefaction mitigation. The subject of this paper is a ground improvement trial undertaken by a local contractor specialising in deep foundations and ground improvement. They were interested in understanding the effectiveness of stone column ground improvement in high fines content (silty) soils using two different installation techniques, vibratory and non-vibratory. Different arrays and Area Replacement Ratios (ARRs) were used for each of the two methods of columns installation.

"PART 1 OF 2INTRODUCTIONSlurry trenches are the least cost hydraulic barrier available, if the excavated spoils can be recycled into backfill. As such, slurry trenches are constructed where possible, sometimes at high risk. Slurry trenches are also used to install biopolymer drainage trenches, which have a low safety factor because the biopolymer slurry weight is marginally greater than the weight of water. In marginal ground the construction risk falls to both the Owner who designs and asks for the construction, and the Contractor who manages the work and promises to complete the project successfully. This paper discusses design and construction of slurry trench barriers in marginally stable ground and where groundwater chemistry invokes the need for slurry management details to obtain proper backfill placement.As a designer, Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers works for both Owners and Contractors. We are usually able to convince Owners of their responsibility for design detailing in order to obtain a working final product and to obtain reasonable bids from Contractors by disclosing construction needs and designing to reduce the contractor’s exposure. "Sonic drilling is a relatively new technology even though it has been in development since the late 1940s. It was initially funded by the U.S. petroleum industry and then, in the late 40s, Russian scientists worked on developing sonic drilling, their interest based on drilling rates 3 to 20 times that of conventional methods. In the early 1960s, the Shell Oil Company backed research that resulted in a down-hole device with a series of eccentric weights driven by drilling fluid to generate vibration. Hawker Sidley, in the early 1980s, developed the first modern prototype sonic drills in Vancouver B.C. and the North Star Drilling Company in Minnesota became the first contractor in the U.S. to operate sonic equipment in 1985. In 1994, North Star became a division of Boart Longyear, headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah.What’s Unique about a Sonic DrillA sonic drill rig appears and operates very much like any conventional top-drive rotary rig. The key difference is that a sonic drill has a specially designed hydraulically powered drill head, containing oscillators, that generates adjustable high-frequency vibratory forces. The sonic head is attached directly to the drill pipe or outer casing, sending the high frequency vibrations down through the drill steel to the face of the drill bit. This creates displacement, fracturing or shearing action depending on the material being drilled. The oscillator uses two eccentric, counter-rotating balance weights or rollers that are timed to direct 100% of the vibration at 0 degrees and 180 degrees. An air spring houses the oscillators and separates the vibration from the drill rig itself. The vibratory frequency is controlled to suit operating conditions and to achieve optimum drilling rates.When the vibrations coincide with the natural resonant frequency of the steel drill rod or casing, a natural phenomenon called “resonance” occurs. It allows the rig to transfer timed vibratory energy into the top of the drill string, utilizing the natural stored energy of the steel. This causes the drill string to use inertia and act like a flywheel delivering tremendous amounts of energy directly to the bit face. In friendly overburden formations, a sonic drill rig can achieve penetration rates of one ft per second."

Located in downtown Fargo, North Dakota, the Block 9 Redevelopment project site contains highly- compressible soils in the upper 100 feet with groundwater about 10 to 15 feet below the existing ground surface. The owner prohibited using driven piles to avoid disturbing neighbors of the project and historically, drilled shafts are used in Fargo as a reduced noise and vibration alternative to driven piles. However, developments over the last 20 to 30 years in drilling equipment, load testing and integrity testing resulted in the project team identifying augered cast-in-place piles as a suitable alternative for this project. To reduce the risks associated with using a relatively unproven foundation system in the area, the project team used the design-build delivery method for foundation design and construction. The team also specified compression load testing and higher-than-normal integrity testing. A successful bi-directional load test validated the design parameters for the augered cast-in-place pile while thermal integrity profiling gave the team confidence that these piles would perform similarly to the test pile. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Block 9 Redevelopment project goal was to turn an existing, at-grade parking lot in downtown Fargo, North Dakota into a public outdoor plaza, a mixed-use building and a parking ramp. The project provides new offices, retail spaces, a hotel, a restaurant and private apartments. Situated in the southeast quadrant at the intersection of Broadway and 3rd Avenue North, the project site wraps around a bank building that was to remain. According to aerial photographs, the eastern portion of the site contained a public parking ramp that was constructed between 1952 and 1976, and subsequently demolished between 2009 and 2010. The western portion of the site had some combination of buildings and surface parking visible in aerial photographs taken between 1952 and 1979. Since 1984, aerial photographs show the western portion of the site being entirely surface parking. The redevelopment included the construction of three structures: the Tower, the Podium and the Parking Ramp, as shown in Fig. 1. With plan dimensions of roughly 100 feet by 100 feet, the Tower has 1 level of below-grade parking and 19 above-grade levels rising to a height of about 230 feet above grade. The Tower contains eight levels of commercial office space, four levels of hotel, six levels of residences and a mechanical level. This configuration resulted in column service loads ranging between 435 and 2,685 kips. The Tower core area has a total service load of about 30,000 kips.

Abstract: Expansive soils cause more damage to structures annually than a combination of other major natural disasters. Because of the cost to our society, all means and methods need to be fully explored to mitigate the problems associated with expansive soils. This study will present a foundation design approach that is underutilized in this application, driven piles. The main objective of the study is to present pile test results and analysis from four driven pile project sites in three types of expansive soils found in central Texas: Del Rio formation, Taylor/Navarro formation, and expansive alluvium. High strain dynamic pile tests were conducted on each of the four studies with rigorous signal matching analysis from the CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP). Ultimate pile capacities ranged from 73 to 311 kips with an average of 61% of the total capacity coming from the pile shaft and were two to six times the structural capacity needed. Allowable loads calculated from Modified Gates dynamic formula best modeled allowable test results. Average unit skin frictions ranged from 0.50 to 4.71 ksf. Restrike pile tests of 1 to 17 days after initial driving reported 30 to 100% shaft capacity gain. All open-ended pipe piles driven produced soil plugs ranging from 4 to 14 feet thick. Small diameter, thick-walled, open-ended pipe piles reached penetration of twice the depth of designated zone of seasonal moisture change without problem. The observed production rate of the driven piles was on average 8 minutes, which implied daily production of 15 to 40 piles. Predrills or augered holes should be specified for underground obstructions found in soil investigation.

"Many earthquakes take place every year in Japan, in which the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake induced both a humanitarian crisis and massive economic impacts. As liquefaction which occur in a loose and saturated sand layer, induces quite large damages of infrastructures, the importance of liquefaction mitigation has been emphasized to minimize earthquake disasters for many years. Many kinds of ground improvement techniques based on various improvement principles have been developed for earthquake disaster mitigation. Among them, the grid type deep mixing method has been often applied to liquefaction mitigation. In the method, the stiff grid walls are constructed by mixing the soil and binder in-situ, which are expected to restrict the shear deformation of the soil within the grid walls so that the pore water pressure generation can be remained small. The high applicability of the method was confirmed in several earthquakes, including the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake. In this paper, the development of the method, some applications of the deep mixing method to earthquake disaster mitigation are briefly introduced. INTRODUCTION In Japan, many earthquakes take place every year in Japan, in which the 1995 Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake and the 2011 Tohoku earthquake induced both a humanitarian crisis and massive economic impacts. As liquefaction induces quite large damages, the importance of liquefaction mitigation has been emphasized to minimize earthquake disasters for many years. Table 1 shows the amount of damage to port facilities (Noda, 1991). According to the table, the amount of damage when liquefaction takes place is about 20 to 50 times larger than that without liquefaction. This highlights the importance of liquefaction mitigation to minimize earthquake disasters. There are many kinds of soil stabilization techniques developed for liquefaction in Japan. Among them, the deep mixing method (DMM), an in-situ cement stabilization techniques, was developed in 1970s in Japan and has frequently been applied to improvements of clayey and sandy soils (Kitazume and Terashi, 2013). The grid type DMM has been often applied to prevent liquefaction, where the grid of stabilized column walls function to restrict generation of excess pore pressure in the soil within the walls by confining the soil particle movement. The improvement effect of the method was first evaluated in the Hyogoken-Nambu earthquake in 1995 and was also evaluated in the Tohoku earthquake in 2011. In this paper, some successful performance of the deep mixing method to earthquake disaster mitigation in the two earthquakes are briefly introduced."

Assam cancer care foundation (ACCF) proposed the construction of hospitals and related facilities across 18 locations in the state of Assam-India. Tezpur is one among the 18 locations of Assam with high seismic risk. The strata at the site are comprised of mostly fine silty sands of lower SPT- N values. The water table is also encountered and ranging from 1 m to 2 m below EGL. Since the site lies in seismic zone V as per IS 1893, detailed liquefaction analysis is carried out for all five boreholes and indicates that soil is liquefiable and ground improvement is inevitable up to a depth of 15 m below existing ground level. To mitigate the liquefaction potential and enhance the seismic performance of the soil, ground improvement using stone columns by Wet top feed Vibro-replacement method is proposed. Also, the differential settlements can be avoided effectively under the raft foundation with Vibro Stone Columns. In this paper, field test validation results such as Pre and post-SPTs and ECPTs to access the extent of ground improvement, along with other information adopted in this project presented.

"Treviicos-Soletanche Joint Venture (JV) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have installed a 3800-foot long, 275-foot deep and minimum 2-foot wide secant pile barrier wall at Wolf Creek Dam in Jamestown, KY. This paper describes the methodology employed by the JV and USACE to evaluate the overlap, thickness, and position of the barrier wall. It addresses the contractual requirements, positional uncertainty, and evaluation procedures.These procedures evolved over the course of the project as various issues were identified and procedures developed to evaluate these issues. During the project, it became clear that the JV and USACE could ascertain that the wall thickness and overlap requirements could be met if the overlap based upon Koden data was at least 0.7’ in the left-right direction. For a small number of piles with overlaps between 0.5’ and 0.7’, the piles are contractually compliant yet contain a minor degree of uncertainty in the overlap. Initially, the USACE assumption was that the amount of uncertainty of verticality measurements would require more than a 1-foot measured overlap in the left-right direction to confirm an actual, contractual 6-inch overlap. With time and experience, the limit of measured overlap was reduced in accordance with greater understanding of the equipment capabilities and tolerances. Other lessons learned include the need for Quality Control/Assurance personnel to collect data at the same starting point for every pile.For every pile the JV and USACE compared analog and digital data to provide confidence that the correct digital data was used for overlap calculations. Perhaps the most important lesson learned was the importance of the JV and USACE working together and sharing all data. Overlap analysis was performed by the JV’s Barrier Wall Specialist and a small number of USACE personnel. This resulted in a high level of experience and expertise within a small group.IntroductionThe Treviicos-Soletanche Joint Venture (JV) and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have installed a 3800-foot long, 275-foot deep, and minimum 2-foot wide secant pile barrier wall at Wolf Creek Dam in Jamestown, KY. The wall was installed through a 6-foot wide Protective Concrete Embankment Wall (PCEW) which was installed two feet into rock. The PCEW protects the embankment from erosion of drilling fluids during subsequent operations. Below the PCEW the piles were installed to a specified elevation (staggered at 475’ and 473’ below the 748.2’ work platform). The Ordovician limestone and shale bedrock is flat lying with few vertical fractures. These conditions facilitate the advancement of pilot holes with very low deviations (with considerable credit to the JV’s drillers and steering engineers). The pilot holes were spaced on 31.5-inch and 35-inch spacing. Subsequent enlargement of the pilot holes to 50’ resulted in a continuous wall. This paper addresses the requirements and procedures to assure that the wall was as wide, deep and continuous as specified."

It is argued that approximate computer based methods are only suited to modelling conventional piled rafts, for pile enhanced rafts where the interactions will be non linear three dimensional finite element analysis is required. However current 3D finite element analysis often relies on symmetry to reduce computational cost and there are concerns over the dependency of the results on the user. Therefore a new strategy within the finite element framework has been proposed. The main advantage of this strategy is that each stage of the model can be checked for consistency. There is also the added benefit that non symmetrical models can easily be constructed by tying the validated components together without dramatic increases in computational time. The proposed strategy compared well to the published results of a hypothetical example of a piled raft previously analysed with numerous methods by Poulos et al. (1997).

Improvements in construction equipment and techniques in recent years have made possible the use of drilled shaft foundations in diameters and lengths not previously considered practical or feasible. Many highway bridge and other structures are now routinely founded on drilled shafts which -are 8 to 12 feet in diameter and extending over 200 feet in depth below grade. There are unique challenges associated with constructing such large and deep cast-In-place foundations and engineers should be aware of the special needs associated with site investigation, construction specifications, material requirements, and quality assurance. This paper outlines a number of special considerations for these foundations, along with strategies that may be employed to improve the reliability and quality of large drilled shaft foundations.

Due to the worldwide population growth, the development of sustainable infrastructure and the exploration of renewable energies plays a key role to handle the rising megacity trends and to limit carbon footprint. Herrenknecht AG is a leading manufacturer of Tunnel Boring machines and has constantly endeavored through its extensive Research and Development programs to address limitations faced by the civil engineering industry as regards to construction equipment capabilities. New mechanized technologies, mainly coming from the tunnelling industry, have been developed by Herrenknecht AG as an efficient alternative to conventional civil engineering, where tailor-made concepts are required to comply with restricted conditions onsite. Very often this innovation led technology capability has meant making construction processes safer due to minimal human intervention and also far more productive due to higher performance as compared to other latest or conventional methods of construction. The rising need for even higher building structures and large-capacity bridges involve the development of innovative deep foundation technologies for on- and offshore operation. Conventional methods like bore piles reach their technical and economic limits under certain conditions. For building shafts and foundations, the mechanized Vertical Shaft Sinking Machine technology (VSM) from Herrenknecht AG is a proven innovation and has now been used in various onshore infrastructure projects worldwide to construct a total of 94 circular shafts in depths of up to 115 meters. It operates below the groundwater level, completely remote-controlled from the surface in a diameter range from 4.5 to 18 meters. Subsequently Herrenknecht noted that Offshore foundations, especially in non-drivable ground conditions such as soft and hard rock (e.g. limestone, sandstone, mudstone, granite etc. or soft soil with high density) and shallow continental shelf (water depth approx. 20-60m), presented construction challenges and equally an opportunity for building high performance equipment. The latter construction conditions usually requires drilled installation methods for applications such as harbor enlargements, bridge foundations and foundations for offshore wind turbines. The Offshore Foundation Drilling technology (OFD®) is Herrenknecht’s latest innovation, incorporating our learnings from the VSM and full-face Tunnel Boring machines, and the OFD® enables a rapid and economical offshore installation in such variable ground and rock conditions. This paper will discuss the technology behind the new mechanized technology of VSM and Herrenknecht’s latest innovation of the OFD® along with their respective application fields in foundations construction. "For decades, the International Market Place (IMP) has been an icon in the heart of Waikiki in Honolulu, Hawaii. It was famous for Duke Kahanamoku’s restaurant where people flocked to hear Don Ho sing in the ’60s and ’70s. Later, it was a bustling, open-air hub of small vendors who peddled everything from Hawaiian souvenirs and jewelry to food court meals and farmer’s market produce. Small buildings and shacks that housed the businesses were located on a curved tract of land — just one block off the beach — that stretches from Kalakaua Avenue to Kuhio Avenue. The entrance to the complex is dominated by a huge, old (circa 1850) Banyan tree. This tract is owned by the Queen Emma Land Company. Queen Emma was a Hawaiian Queen from the 1800s. Revenue from the land has supported the Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu for decades.The reimagined IMP is owned by Taubman Centers, of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., and CoastWood Capital Group of San Francisco, Calif. The IMP will offer a distinctive collection of upscale fashion and lifestyle retailers, including Hawaii’s only Saks Fifth Avenue store, as well as ten sit-down restaurants, including concepts by award-winning chefs Michael Mina and Roy Yamaguchi. The mall features two large open-air courts, the first of which has the huge Banyan tree as its entryway centerpiece. The second open-air court, called Queen’s Court, includes a stage and mature monkeypod trees and a few palm trees. Foundation SelectionAfter a geotechnical exploration that was directed by SME, Plymouth, Mich., and performed by Geolabs, Honolulu, it was discovered that the historical site had hidden and challenging foundation conditions. The subsurface conditions included a very deep but now in-filled ancient river valley containing more than 180 ft (54.9 m) of lagoonal deposits consisting of normally consolidated plastic clayey silts and silty clays with blow counts mainly varying in N-value from 1 to 6. The silt was underlain by several soft coralline layers, some overconsolidated clays and various basalt layers. The static groundwater level on the site was at a depth of about 5 ft (1.5 m), closely matching sea level.Although driven piles had previously been used as the preferred deep foundation support for adjacent structures, this area of town is now fully developed and local noise ordinances preclude their use. Augercast piles were initially considered, but when the general contractor dck/FWF, Pittsburgh, Pa., asked for bids for the augercast piles, several foundation contractors offered alternate systems. The practical installation depth of augercast piles was limited and due to the depth of the in-filled alluvial valley, this system could likely have left soft silt below the tips of the piles over much of the site."

"A refinery expansion project for Marathon Petroleum Company in Southern Louisiana required existing medium to large pipe racks to be expanded for additional capacity. Foundation modifications were necessary in order to add levels to the existing pipe racks. New piles were added and existing pile cap foundations were expanded. Several different pile types were considered. Custom designed large diameter helical piles were chosen, because they can be installed quickly with low overhead restrictions, produce minimal soil spoils, and are cost effective. The load capacity required for piles was higher than typical, off-the-shelf helical piles. In particular, the lateral load capacity demand was high due to wind loads of a hurricane prone region. Methods used to design and size helical piles are summarized including capacity to torque ratio estimation for composite helical piles. Pile load testing was performed in order to confirm design capacities of the helical piles under axial and lateral loading. Measured axial and lateral deflections compared well with predicted values. This case history evaluates the effectiveness of modern helical pile design methods within the context of a real and practical example.INTRODUCTIONAs the capacity of modern installation equipment increases, large-diameter helical piles are being used to support higher loads in more diverse applications. Currently, large-diameter high-capacity helical piles are used for electrical power transmission, power generation, high-rise buildings, bridges, and industrial applications. This case study regards a 2.5-mile pipe rack modification project within an existing refinery. One of the many challenges for engineering and construction of refinery revamp projects is determining how to effectively expand the capacity of existing foundations for additional equipment, piping, and other facilities. Custom designed large-diameter helical piles provided an effective solution to the challenges faced when expanding the capacity of existing pipe racks."
