The scope of the present paper is limited to report the experimental evidence and not for describing the analytical assumptions. However, the idea behind the experimental program is that the deterioration may be caused by the leaching of Ca from the treated soil to surrounding soil or water driven by the difference in the Ca ion concentration. As a consequence of Ca leaching, it may be natural to expect the expansion of micro void space within the treated soil. In a saturated condition, the water inflow into the treated soil may accompany the leaching phenomenon. We measured the water content within the treated soil. But there is not much difference in water content within the soil.

Over seven years ago, on October 29, 2012, Superstorm Sandy pummeled the Northeast of the United States inflicting heavy damage on New York City Transit’s (NYCT) system. Since then, NYCT has been methodically rehabilitating and hardening its assets to upgrade service and prevent future impacts caused by similar devasting storm surges. Part of these resiliency efforts, NYCT’s 207th St Yard Project is one of many projects that make up the Sandy Repair and Flood Mitigation Program. The work to be performed on the 207th Street Project includes building a perimeter Floodwall along the Harlem River, extending up 215th Street and 9th Avenue with the intent of having the ability to withstand a 500 Year Storm flooding event. The original 1,535 lineal feet of the marine side floodwall design consisted of 937 each W40x235 H-Piles continuously welded to PS 27.5 flat sheet to form an interlocked and composite steel seawall that would protect the NYCT 207th Yard from a storm surge of the Harlem River. However, after the Contract was awarded and a Notice to Proceed was issued, Walsh Construction Company II (WCCII) partnered with Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers (MRCE) to propose a redesign of the marine wall section as a Value Engineering Change Proposal (VECP). This VEP redesign is comprised of 279 each 54in Diameter Steel Pipe Piles that are interconnected with continuously welded PZ 35 sheet piles interlocks. The intent of the VEP was to provide a cost savings that could be shared by both parties as well as alleviate some constructability and alignment control concerns that WCCII had expressed to NYCT. The VEP allowed WCCII to substantially lower the total cost which was shared between NYCT and WCCII.

In early 2021, DFI formed a Foundation Reuse Task Force due to concurrent and coincidental discussions of this topic during meetings of the Subsurface Char- acterization for Deep Foundations and Testing and Evaluation committees. Interested members from both commit- tees, as well as of the Sustainability Com- mittee, joined forces to form the task force. The task force mission is to promote foundation reuse by leveraging experi- ence among DFI members and collabo- rating across pertinent committees. General goals of the task force are to identify, assess and reduce risks associated with reuse; to educate owners and decision-makers about reuse; and to improve the investigation, design, construction and testing practices associated with reuse. One of the first orders of business for the task force was to organize a roundtable discussion of foundation reuse for DFI's 46th Annual Conference on Deep Foundations in Las Vegas. Last fall's discussion was framed as a continuation of the successful "Horses for Courses" session of SuperPile '21, which also focused on foundation reuse. However, whereas the SuperPile session focused on technical content, the annual conference panel on October 13, 2021, was envisioned as a less technical conversation that emphasized audience participation while addressing approaches to decisions about foundation reuse issues. The choice of a design concept for a bridge foundation is guided by various factors; several of these factors are indeed of technical origin, like the environmental conditions in a broad sense, but others non technical factors may also have a profound impact on the final design concept. The foundations solutions adopted for the Rion Antirion bridge are described and an attempt is made to pinpoint the major factors that have guided the final choices. The Rion Antirion bridge is exemplar in that respect: the foundation concept combines the simplicity of capacity design, the conceptual facility of construction and enhances the foundation safety. The design of these foundations was a very challenging task which required full cooperation and close interaction with all the parties involved: concessionaire, contractor, designers and design checker.

Many refineries are in the process of revamping and expanding their existing facilities. Most of the refineries are located in coastal areas due to ease of transportation and storage of crude oil. Considering the criticality of structures as well as prevailing soil conditions, most of the structures are supported on pile foundations. In depth review of sub-surface investigations data followed by liquefaction assessment of the site, it is noticed that site is prone to liquefaction during the seismic event. Among various techniques, driven cast-in-situ piles were selected to mitigate liquefaction. Static cone penetration tests were conducted during the pre and post installation of driven cast-in-situ piles at identified locations. Analysis of cone penetration test data shows that considerable ground improvement has been achieved post-installation of driven cast-in-situ piles.

Why is mediation being hailed as the wave of the future? The high cost of putting on a trial, over-crowded court calendars and long trial delays have resulted in what prominent attorneys and leading jurists are calling a litigation crisis. In no segment of the legal world are these pressures greater felt than in the trial of the serious construction case. Furthermore, the siege mentality of both the plaintiff and defense bar often leads to a reluctance by either side to make the first reasonable offer for fear of showing weakness. Attorneys operating in the serious construction case arena express concerns that there exist insufficient opportunities for the parties to meet, tell their stories, and negotiate settlement prior to the eve of trial. Mediation, by opening lines of effective communication and encouraging meaningful settlement negotiation, has proven to be a very effective antidote to the litigation crisis.

As part of the construction of a multi-span pre-stressed concrete girder bridge for Japan’s new high speed rail line, landslide preventive piles were installed on the flank of a steep slope. The rotary pressin piling method was selected to install three parallel rows of long (up to 36m, i.e., 118ft) and large diameter (1,200mm, i.e., 47.2in) pipe piles safely into the slope as a deterrent measure. They were spaced at 2.5 Dia (3.0m, i.e., 9.8ft) on center and were staggered to allow the groundwater to migrate between the piles. Each pile had a sacrificial cutting shoe welded at its toe for speedy installation and was rotated and simultaneously pressed into soil on the slope through the stable bedrock thereunder to achieve a robust landslide prevention in a relatively short period of time.

How often phrases like these have been made by project managers and project teams trying to explain why there has been cost growth, project delays and differing site conditions claims. But does it really take x-ray vision? Do we really approach geotechnical construction projects unprepared for the subsurface that may be encountered because we can't get the answer? Too often our industry seems to think the answer is, "yes." However, this is not because we can't understand the subsurface. All too frequently it is because a choice is made to save money or time by foregoing or shortchanging upfront subsurface investigations. This is accepting a risk at the beginning of the process and realizing it during construction. Case histories have proven time and time again that upfront investment in site exploration and constructing a ground model mitigates risk in design and construction. But how much do we prepare? What level of investigation (or investment) is appropriate? The answer of course, is it depends; how much risk are you willing to take for your project and what are the potential consequences?

Author has exhaustively researched into soft ground through construction of a large open caisson on soft ground (muck) which weighs more than 4, 000 tons. To avoid any contingency during construction, we precompressed muck stratum with a sand cushion and consolidated it with sand piles before construction of the caisson. We made borehole surveyings and soil tests many times before and after ground treatment. Following the tracks of changes of the caisson at all stages of precasting, we surveyed a large number of data. On the basis of analysis of the data we changed the original construction plan of precasting in four stages and sinking in three stages into that of precasting in three stages and sinking in one stage. Through the practice of the whole caisson construction the author has advanced new theory of kinematic law for soil particles and the change's law for strength of muck during precompression of sand cushion and consolidation of sand piles.

Foundations in any contract are the most uncertain parts of the contract and most of the "Construction-Contract-Disputes" are either directly related to foundations or arise as 'Side-effects of changes in promises related to foundations. Foundation Engineering is defined as ' The art of selection, designing and constructing the elements that transfer the weight of structure to the underlying Soil or Rock." (Ralph B. Perk). This art started becoming a science since 1920, when scientific efforts to determine the behaviour of sub-surface materials were made. The art and science merged to give new techniques and the science started dominating the field as more and more refinement came in techniques to predict more accurately the characteristics of the sub-surface elements. Inspite of good thorough investigations and design, the contractual promises drafted could leave some room for differences between the parties and above all the prudency expected of both the parties may fall short of the expectations raised in the contract. This may give rise to disputes which may need to be resolved as per principles of law. This paper attempts to initiate a dialogue amongst Foundations-Engineers and Contractors as to how do we minimise the differences arising out of or related to contracts concerning "Foundations".

When a major storm system stalled over Western Europe last summer, it pro- duced the deadliest flood on European territory in the last two decades. Beyond record-setting rainfall over countries such as Luxembourg, Switzerland, France and the Netherlands from the storm's "Bernd" low pressure system, more than 230 people were killed in Germany and Belgium. The storm system also caused over an estimated $20 billion (€17.7 billion) of damage. A team from the Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association, supported by the National Science Foundation, was mobilized to investigate the potential impacts of the widespread flooding in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands. Members of the DFI Europe regional chapter closely collaborated with the U.S.-based GEER team and many other engineers and scientists in Europe to collect perishable data and study flooding effects and the event's resulting impacts on geostructures, such as bridges, retaining walls, dikes and embankments. This article features some of the vast information collected by the team, which has recently been published in a comprehensive reconnaissance report and made available for free at geerassociation.org. All data will also be accessible at the NEHRI DesignSafe Cl data repository.

An upgrading and straightening of a highway included building a bridge across a small river. A routine site investigation was initiated to determine the conditions for designing the foundation of the bridge. The proposed bridge was a two-lane highway bridge in one span with a total length of 30 m (100 ft), as indicated in Fig. 1. It was to be placed about 20 m (66 ft) upstreams of the bridge for the existing highway. The site investigation included one boring at each abutment with soil sampling and in-situ vane testing and placed about halfway up the slope from the small river at ground surface elevation + 54 m. Within the investigated maximum depth of 40 m (130 ft), the soils at both borehole locations consisted of a thin clay crust over a thick deposit of soft sensitive clay with a natural water content of about 70 % and a liquid limit of about 60. The undrained shear strength below the crust was about 20 KPa (400 psf) and increased slightly with depth. The sensitivity was high, about 40.

Mosul Dam is an earth fill dam located on the Tigris River, approximately 40 km (25 mi) northwest of Mosul, Iraq. The construction of the dam was completed in 1984. It is one of the largest multipurpose dams in the Middle East, and the largest dam in Iraq. The dam provides flood control, irrigation, power generation and water supply. At 113 m (371 ft) high and 3.65 km (2.3 mi) long, the reservoir has a storage capacity of 11.1 billion m3 (392 billion ft3) of water. The main hydroelectric power station has four turbines for an installed capacity of 750 MW. The discharge system includes two bottom-outlet tunnels of 10 m (33 ft) diameter, a five-gate service spillway and an emergency fuse plug spillway.

Driving of large piles in water can impact marine wildlife. Bubble curtains can mitigate these adverse effects. The procedures for and preliminary results of monitoring airborne, waterborne and groundborne vibrations with and without bubble curtains on a test project involving 2.438 m piles to 110 m is reported here. We observed fish kills and sea lions apparently fleeing the area. These phenomena were presumably due to the extreme acoustic effects of the powerful hammers which generated waterborne sound intensities locally in excess of 240 dB. This waterborne pile driving noise data collection undertaking is believed to be the most extensive ever attempted.

The fracture orientations were inferred based on theory and previous experience. The fracture pattern was not monitored during the project. Grout volume was recorded at each sleeve port and real time movement monitoring of the building foundation was performed.

This project included the replacement of the Long Island Railroad (LIRR) Atlantic 6 Bridge in New York City, which services rail traffic and spans the Van Wyck Expressway and frontage roads. The bridge re- placement was part of an overall project to widen the Van Wyck Expressway between Kew Gardens and John F. Kennedy Airport, which serves as the major route for vehicular traffic between the airport and the city. The railroad bridge crosses the expressway and frontage roads in a significantly congested area, and it services an average of approximately 140,000 commuters per day through- out the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens. The existing bridge superstructure and foundations were to be demolished and new structures and foundations were proposed to be constructed at the bridge's east and west abutments and center pier. The new bridge would be supported on driven H-piles. To facilitate the construction of the new bridge's abutments and center pier, a support of excavation design was required to support the grade around the existing structures. The design shown on the contract drawings included a driven soldier pile and lagging wall with multiple rows of drilled tiebacks at the abutments to laterally support excavation heights of up to 36 ft (11 m). The existing abutments are located directly adja- cent to frontage roads that have an extremely high vehicle traffic volume,
