Recently, the Canadian Explosives Research Laboratory (CERL) completed its investigation of a truck accident, which involved 18,000 kg of commercial explosives, 13,000 kg of which was ANFO. Over the three years of the investigation unconfined burns of piles of ANFO were performed. In its final phase of the investigation, two burn trials were performed in an attempt to recreate the accident and the ensuing fire, to identify probable mechanisms that led from burning to detonation. Two full-scale tests were performed using complete tractor-trailers. In each test, the trucks were placed in a jack-knifed position with the majority of the explosives located on the ground in front of the trailer. The explosives were placed in a manner to provide maximum confinement and to maximize the possibility of explosion/detonation while remaining as faithful as possible to the perceived accident geometry. The tests were instrumented using thermocouples and video cameras and observations were made on the burning characteristics of the explosives, tractor-trailer and tractor-trailer components. In each test the explosives burned calmly for approximately 80 minutes. There was no evidence of explosion or of unstable burning. The heat caused several truck components to rupture violently. These included the tires, some engine components, the spring brake chambers and possibly the fuel tanks. Of these, the most violent were the truck tires. Although no quantitative data was gathered on rupture violence or fragment velocity, it is speculated that several truck components might produce fragments with sufficient energy to initiate heat-sensitised explosives under favourable circumstances.

The presence of an extensive soft siltstone layer in the middle of the inter-burden sequence of rocks at Syferfontein Colliery in South Africa prompted tests to determine the effect of different mid-column decks of inert material in the siltstone layer. The objective was to achieve significant cost savings in explosives use whilst not degrading dragline productivity. An important factor that had to be considered was that the initiation systems available in South Africa are not accurate enough to ensure simultaneous initiation of explosives decks in a hole.

A large overburden blast was carried out at Douglas Colliery, Middelburg Mine Services, close to a national road in South Africa. The road is a busy route between Witbank and Bethal and damage to the road could not be risked. The section of road next to the blast was particularly prone to damage, because it had been mined out on its eastern flank, and the large blast was to take place on its western flank. There were thus three potential damage risks: 1. Fly rock damage to the road surface 2. Vibration damage to the road substrate 3. Damage caused by bulk displacement of the block supporting the road into the void on the mined out side. This paper presents the design and blasting methods used to control the blast and avoid these three risks. Electronic delay detonators were used in multi-decked holes. Signature data were used to determine the blast timing to make sure that delays were used that would provide destructive interference. The timing direction and sequence was decided using wave interference patterns to direct repeated shocks away from the road. The precise detonators and the odelling capability allowed effective control of the blast vibration result. Each hole was charged with two explosive decks separated by a deck of aggregate to limit the charge mass fired per delay and thus limit the reaction forces acting towards the unsupported road. The vibration and blast results are presented in the paper, together with the design that was applied. Details are provided on how the blast was charged and primed. We had a cold, gray winter here in Kansas City and I spent a lot of time watching out my den window at the squirrels and birds trying to get by in the lousy weather. I remember too well working in the cold, loading shots. I was frostbitten several times since I couldn’t tie in MS connectors with gloves on. Those old connectors had a piece of detonating cord on either end of a metal tube that held the delay and you tied them to the trunk lines with square knots. Doing this on a “warm” day in Alaska or Montana shooting ditch for a pipeline could be a frosty experience. Also remember how hard it was to connect up electric caps (detonators to you new guys) in the cold. Now I don’t want you to feel sorry for me ‘cause I suspect most of you younger fellows have also paid your dues in the cold and for that matter in the heat too. Wowee, the heat at the bottom of a Chicago dolomite quarry in August was enough to fry the brains of all that were there. Maybe that’s why the third deck of my brains doesn’t exist.

There has been significant progress made with narrow vein gold mines in which a second option for crushing has begun to attract attention. To ensure the profitability of a mine that has based its economics on the absence of a crusher station, more than just best blasting practices are required. Using a blasting operation itself as a primary crusher would undoubtedly save enormous capital costs as well as eliminate some of the costs of crushing ore with the result that considerable savings might be realized. The challenge would be to define the conditions necessary to make this type of operation feasible by providing consistent blasting methods that result in a significant paradigm shift with respect to both blasting and current underground crushing methods. A break model has been developed and applied as a technique in designing blasting patterns based on a unit charge blasting geometry and stress reflection from free faces. There are four components to this model and these are 1) unit charge, 2) thermodynamic/energy, 3) stress reflection, and 4) radial break. Some important changes in timing between holes and rows based on rock properties and the percentage of burden moved were also used. On-site testing at a narrow vein gold mine in Quebec Canada, provided measured parameters for the model. No underground crusher was planned - relying only on the fragmentation profile generated by ring blasting. We present the results of our field research on the variation of the density of the gassed explosives and their influence on the blasting results in the Peruvian mines: Yanacocha, Toquepala and Antamina. Currently, 90% of Peruvian mines uses gassed explosives, for their economic and technical benefits. But new practices and design criteria have had to be adopted, and the most important a careful control of the in-hole density, whose variation in the depth of the hole strongly affects the detonation process.

It is the nature of the initial detonation to the powder around the cap which governs the greater or less effect of the explosion of the whole charge. The cap communicates to the first particles of powder a disruptive impulse, which, according to the nature and strength of the cap, more or less completely overthrows their equilibrium and decomposes the powder with great energy, setting up sympathetic vibrations that explode the particles of powder in turn by the violent disturbances or friction between them in a regular succession of impulses and decompositions, which, if started with sufficient energy, are of such intense heat and velocity that the rupturing force of the explosive is developed practically instantaneously. This detonation has already been shown to be not only the result of mechanical force, but a combination of extremely sudden chemical and dynamical reactions which set up vibrations to which different powders are more or less susceptible, and these explosive reactions will be propagated through the mass of the powder according to the intensity of the vibrations and the resistance with which their motion is opposed by the nature and consistency of the powder, whether it be difficult or easy to oxidize, soft and plastic like dynamite, or hard. If the initial detonation of the powder surrounding the cap is of the highest degree, the vibrations will be most intense and will be propagated further through the mass than by a poorer detonation. Hence the different degrees of detonation. Unless the first particles of powder are so thoroughly decomposed by a detonation of high order, or first degree, as to convey the necessary heat and energy to detonate the whole charge, the greatest force of the powder will not be developed. There will frequently be unbottomed holes or pieces of unexploded powder scattered about, or both, and the air in the mine will be contaminated with some obnoxious gases that have not been completely oxidized.

It has been common practice for many years to predict and control underwater blasting effects on the basis of certain simplified theories related to the pressures generated by underwater detonations. Unfortunately, two of the most commonly applied concepts in many instances do not provide an accurate modeling of typical field conditions nor the potential for damage. One of these concepts is that the damage potential is related directly to the peak pressure generated by an underwater detonation, without regard to the time history of the pressure pulse. This belief has led to the widespread use of air bubble curtains to reduce peak pressures, without considering the effect that air curtains have on the time history of the pressure pulse. At times, this procedure can be unwise. The other concept is based on the premise that pressure pulses in solids (such as rock) will always be transmitted to nearby water bodies in agreement with the theories of the transmission of plane waves across normal (perpendicular) boundaries. In reality, such conditions are quite rare.

It is well-know that the presence of fine materials in mining has a direct impact on the plant processes with a great influence in the total amount of ore production and recovery. In Cu mining heap leaching is affected negatively by the presence of fines material (< 100 # Ty) in leaching piles, where a decreasing in Cu recovery is achieved in a lot of cases. D&B practices used normally in mine operations can generate fines > 4% in blasted piles, but the principal effects are reflected in the downstream processes where pre-conditioning post-blast materials release greater quantities of fines.

When we look out on our business landscape today, the words higher, faster, fdwther come to mind. Compliance issues, business integration, increasing production and profitability demands are converging in an age old industry and giving it a new twist. Not that the rock changes, rather that as the variables of our business change, the resulting “cut-off grade in business” turns ore into rock or rock into ore. The trick is to emphasize the latter. As with the miners of yore, what was recovered from the business enterprise had a lot to do with tools and skill. So it is today. When the casual observer looks at drilling and blasting operations today, many see the same basic offering in terms of equipment types and process. Looks, however, can be deceiving. As with the aviation sector, a given machine might took similar to previous generations of equipment, but in fact is radically different in terms of power, efficiency, accuracy, and range. So it is with hydraulic top-hammer drills today.

Current image based systems used to measure fragmentation are measuring the two dimensional presentation of a set of three dimensional objects. A two dimensional measurement of fragmentation restricts both sampling and particle size classification and hence provides a different evaluation of the fragmentation to that of a conventional sieve analysis of the same sampled material. Many modern image based fragmentation measurement systems attempt to convert this two dimensional analysis to a three dimensional analysis in order to deliver a "real" measurement of the fragmentation distribution. This paper questions the necessity and validity of this transformation and lays down the framework for the establishment of a standard in fragmentation measurement based on a two dimensional analysis. The results of image based measurements of laboratory prepared samples indicate that differences in mass distributions (3D distribution) can be mapped by an appropriate image based analysis which provides area versus particle size information.

Over the past two years a research project has been performed on reactive and hot ground. A key finding is that host materials including carbonates and coal are inhibitors to the reaction of sulphide and nitrates. The mechanism of this inhibition is pH buffering and isolating the surface of sulphide from reactants. It has been identified that acidity is a key driver of the reaction with a pH of 2 required for a reactivity event. A series of decomposition experiments confirmed that reactive and hot ground are essentially the same phenomenon with the heating produced either by the reaction of sulphide with nitrates or an external heat source. The results indicate that the key driver of detonation in reactive ground is energy and heat released from the acid induced reaction of sulphide and nitrate with no indications of sulphide being a catalyst or contributor to detonation apart from being a heat source. There must be sufficient sulphide and thermal insulation to provide and retain enough heat for detonation to occur. A pathway to detonation is postulated whereby the heat travels upwards and results in evaporation of water in the explosive. When the temperature reaches approximately 200°C (400°F) the ammonium nitrate starts to decompose, decreasing the mass of the reacting species. The material in the top layers has reduced density and specific heat hence the temperature of the top region rapidly increases up to >1000°C (1800°F) and may initiate detonation. Field tests on loaded blast holes support this proposed mechanism. Case studies are presented whereby the research findings are used to provide an analysis of historical reactive ground events.

"The introduction of the QuarryMan laser profile system in 1987, along with the development of the corresponding 3-D software, gave a qualified operator pertinent information about dimensions of quarry highwalls, pattern and hole loading design, stockpile profiles, etc . . . Attributes helpful for this endeavor included surveying, computer, and blasting knowledge. Since not all operators had theseskills, a simpler model, the QuarryAce, was designed to look a t highwall dimensions in 2-D view . Al though less sophisticated than the QuarryMan instrument and its software, it is simpler to instruct in its use and has the ability to determine burdens at different depth levels . An in-house user f r i e n d l y computer program was designed to utilize QuarryAce depth vs. burden data . This program was created to enable laser and computer novices to generate information useful to the everyday blaster."

The problem of predicting damage in densely developed areas due to incidental or malicious explosions is one of considerable importance to local, state, and federal governmental bodies. The difficulty of making such a prediction is confounded by the urban canyon phenomenon as the shock wave intensifies or rarefies depending upon the particular arrangement of buildings. The specific method detailed herein used a Computational Fluid Dynamics solver, ANSYS AUTODYN, to operate on Geographic Information Systems data, ArcGIS, which captured the geospatial relationship between the various buildings in downtown Oklahoma City, prior to the Murrah Building bombing. The model of Oklahoma City was first developed using the building footprints and elevations provided by the ArcGIS database. Due to the sheer size of the problem, the model was then subdivided into annular zones of increasing distance from the center of the blast. Each subsection was then solved using an Euler model in a cascading fashion with the output of the preceding model forming the input of the present model. To further reduce computational time, the size of the Euler nodes was increased at each stage as the section area increased. Due to the loss of precision in capturing peak pressure values when using larger size nodes, it was necessary to perform a transformation on the results using one dimensional wedge calculations with higher precision. The Murrah Building bombing event was an excellent case study due to its available ArcGIS data and the level of documentation of damage to surrounding structures due to the blast. The results from the staged CFD calculation were then used to develop a damage potential contour map. The documented incidents of damage in the area surrounding the Murrah building were then compared to the model generated damage potential contour map. Copyright ©
