A large overburden blast was carried out at Douglas Colliery, Middelburg Mine Services, close to a national road in South Africa. The road is a busy route between Witbank and Bethal and damage to the road could not be risked. The section of road next to the blast was particularly prone to damage, because it had been mined out on its eastern flank, and the large blast was to take place on its western flank. There were thus three potential damage risks: 1. Fly rock damage to the road surface 2. Vibration damage to the road substrate 3. Damage caused by bulk displacement of the block supporting the road into the void on the mined out side. This paper presents the design and blasting methods used to control the blast and avoid these three risks. Electronic delay detonators were used in multi-decked holes. Signature data were used to determine the blast timing to make sure that delays were used that would provide destructive interference. The timing direction and sequence was decided using wave interference patterns to direct repeated shocks away from the road. The precise detonators and the odelling capability allowed effective control of the blast vibration result. Each hole was charged with two explosive decks separated by a deck of aggregate to limit the charge mass fired per delay and thus limit the reaction forces acting towards the unsupported road. The vibration and blast results are presented in the paper, together with the design that was applied. Details are provided on how the blast was charged and primed. The winning of metals often requires fine grinding of very hard ore. The US Bureau of mines measured compressive strengths exceeding 100,000 PSI (700 MPa) in Minnesota taconites. Grinding down to 300 mesh (50 µ) is required for some fine-grained taconites. While other metal ores may not be as strong, significant grinding costs are the rule rather than the exception. One author recently reported that a 7% drop in grinding costs would fully offset a doubling of the drill and blast budget. Another author found that drill and blast costs were 13% of the costs of producing iron ore concentrate while fine crushing and grinding were over 60% of the cost of producing concentrate.

A study was conducted to investigate the damage potential to underground multi-seam openings caused due to vibration generated by open-pit coal mine blasting. The objective was to recommend optimal explosives weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit blasts to ensure the safety and stability of underground openings. Sixteen blasts with varying charge weights and initiation sequences were conducted at Samleshawari open-pit mine and eighty four blast vibration data were recorded in the Hingir Rampur underground colliery in India. Analysis of vibration data showed that roof of the underground openings vibrated with higher amplitude of vibration compared to pillars and floors. The amplifications of vibration in the roof at the junction were upto 4.3 times the pillar vibration. It was observed that coal chips detached from roof when the peak particle velocity reached 131 mm/s or high. The vibration magnitude recorded was higher in upper seams openings than in below seam openings. Rapid attenuation of vibration was recorded in below-seam openings at similar locations. Appropriate particle-charge weight-distance equations were established to calculate the safe explosive weight per delay to be detonated in open-pit mine for safety of multi-seams workings of underground mine. An important part of underground mine planning and operations involves the reclamation of working areas after blasting before the mining cycle can continue. This is especially true for mining that must use large blasting operations in the vicinity of extensive underground workings. In an effort to develop a rational procedure for estimating mine damage produced by blasting, underground rock fall has been assessed for a large-scale blasting operation in oil shale. The amount of mine damage has been quantified in terms of manshifts of effort required to reclaim underground working areas after blasting. This has been further broken down into the three main phases of reclamation, i.e., scaling and excavation, rockbolting, and miscellaneous repairs on ventilation, utilities, etc. Different types of openings have also been assessed including level tunnels, incline drifts and rooms. The effect of repeated blasting on mine damage has also been documented with initial blasts producing more damage than subsequent blasts.

With an increasing pressure to find efficiencies in the mining industry, operations are looking for continuous improvement tools to validate blasting procedures, a crucial and often overlooked area of the process. Using case studies completed at both small and large-scale mining operations, this technical paper proposes a practical methodology for pattern expansion studies, taking into account terrain parameters, rock quality and explosive strength. This technical paper will use a series of tools geared towards an economical continuous improvement procedure, using UAV particle size analysis to optimize blasting based on “generalized reduced gradient” for non-linear problems, with cost savings being the main objective. For the validation of this methodology, one scenario was created based on the operation’s budget: an economical continuous improvement plan that relied on manual data collection methods in order to baseline and optimize procedures.

It is of a very sweet taste, and without odour, and is an active poison. Mere handling of it will in most persons induce sickness and headache. It explodes when heated to about 360° F. or from shock, but in small quantities it ignites and burns with some difficulty by the mere contact of flame.

The A5 road in the United Kingdom forms an ancient and well-used route through the hills and mountains of North Wales. In the 1990?s a programme of work was conducted to upgrade the road to modern standards. As part of this work a new cutting was constructed to bypass a portion of road routed through a gorge close to the village of Ty Nant. This new cutting was formed by drilling and blasting and included much pre-splitting and extensive rock bolting. This operation caused much concern to local residents relating to vibration, air overpressure and flyrock.

This study introduces the X-2Mill solution, a refined two-step methodology aimed at optimizing blast designs by aligning explosive energy with rock properties. The approach employs the X-4Traits Model, which uses drill-monitoring data from both autonomous and manual drilling modes to develop two critical indexes: the Drilling Rock Factor (DRF) and the Drilling SAG Power Index (DSPI). The DRF integrates the Size-Energy Fan Model with rock fragmentation results and blast design parameters, while the DSPI adjusts Specific SAG Energy (SESAG) based on Bond’s theory, incorporating ore X80 results, SAG mill capacity (TPH), and power draw to estimate milling difficulty. To enhance prediction accuracy, the X-2Mill solution incorporates, to a Principal Component Analysis of the normalized drilling data, a Meta Machine Learning model with a 3D spatial function, accounting for information from surrounding drill holes. This integration improves the precision of the DRF and DSPI estimates. The methodology unfolds in two main steps: Step 1: Bench-Scale Pattern Design, involves defining the target P80 size for ore based on the SESAG and the DSPI. It also establishes target X80 sizes for waste and oxide materials and iterates to determine the optimal Burden x Spacing (BxS) using the Size-Energy Fan Model and the DRF. Step 2: Blast-Scale Selective Explosive Density/Energy focuses on refining explosive density on a hole-by-hole basis to achieve the specified X80 values for ore, waste, and oxide materials. The X-2Mill Solution was developed at Minera Escondida Limitada (MEL) using data from 162,761 blastholes across 356 blasts conducted over three mine expansions. This solution addresses the challenges of blasting harder and more difficult rock, particularly in the lower levels of the mine. By adapting the blast pattern and explosive density to the specific rock properties and ore/waste designation, the X-2Mill Solution aims to achieve precise size distributions and improve overall blasting performance. The results demonstrate that the X-2Mill Solution balances ore fragmentation to meet SAG mill throughput requirements while optimizing powder factor costs for waste material and maintaining digging efficiency. By efficiently distributing explosive energy, the solution not only enhances throughput but also improves blasting efficiency while ensuring stable slopes and minimizing fault activation.

Human response to blast induced vibration and air overpressure is an unsolved problem that accompanies excavation process in mining. Pre-assessment and understanding of annoyance due to production blasting is probably one of the most important aspects of a successful mining operation. Complaints arising due to unoptimised blasts lead to various critical situations that hamper production. Inspite, this important aspect has been covered by a limited number of researchers in the world and probably least in Indian context. Human response is a complex phenomenon and the sensitivity of individual also vary from person to person depending on various factors like age, sex, literacy, health and exposure to mining. With ever increasing demand of minerals, opencast mines are expected to approach habitats and thus mine management may witness increased response to blasting. Many developed countries have their own guidelines based on scientific analysis, addressing such environmental problems, where as there are a few studies available in India. This study introspects above phenomenon in tune with mining requirements by analysing direct human response. This paper is based on a case study regarding the human response to blast induced hazards in a Manganese mine situated in central India. Advanced techniques of Critical Path Method and Multiple Response Analyses have been used to unearth important inferences on the response of different crosssections of population residing about the mine to blast induced noise, ground vibration and air overpressure. Various inferences drawn may provide guidelines to the planners, environment or safety departments and blasting official for safe and environment friendly blast design.

The vector sum peak particle velocity (PPV) of blast vibrations describes the blast vibration intensity more completely than the PPV of a single component waveform. It is more logical to use a vector sum PPV as a vibration limit than using a single component PPV. In 1980 the USBM recommended the frequency related peak particle velocity criterion. So far this method has been only applied to single component waveforms, but not to the vector sum PPV since there is no method available to associate a frequency to the vector sum PPV. The present paper describes a method to define a principal frequency associated with vector sum PPV. The method is based on the weighted average of the principal (zero-crossing) frequencies of the three tri-axial components at the time of the PPV.

In 1923, Ralph Assheton compiled a report for the Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) on accidental explosions in manufacturing plants. The report chronicles the type and amount of explosive involved in the event and the effects and distances to nearby buildings and workers for over 100 events from 1880 to 1916. Apparently, this report was never published but served as the origin of the IME’s first intra-plant distance table published in Pamphlet No. 3 in 1926. The effort was a parallel effort to the IME’s development of the American Table of Distances. The intra-plant distance table has never been changed by the IME and follows the US Department of Defense (DoD) standard very closely. This paper freshly compiles the data from the 1923 report and analyzes it with modern methods not generally available in 1923. Interestingly, the analysis indicates that the original intra-plant distance tables were established primarily to protect workers from serious injury and that preventing propagation was a side benefit. The data shows that a strong relationship exists between the probability of injury and the traditional K-factor. The data indicate that people in the open are better protected than those inside structures and that barricades reduce risk close to an event. Individuals at the intra-plant distance had a 95 percent chance of receiving no worse than a minor injury. A comparison of the data to explosive event consequence models indicate the models are overly conservative in regards to risk inside inhabited building distances.

The Coeur Rochester Mine is the largest primary silver surface mine in North America. Throughout its 17-year life, gold and silver grades leaving the tertiary crusher have typically been, on average, slightly below the mined bench grades as determined by blast hole assays. On a project-to-date basis, this grade variance is well within industry standards. While these variances are acceptable, mine personnel continue to study ways to further minimize the grade differences. One suspected cause for lower than expected head grades are ore loss and dilution resulting from blast-induced shot movement. In regard to grade control, the underlying design principle for non-electric blasts is the generation of uniform movement of the blasted rock material. Using one or two uniform directions of initiation, ore control methods at Rochester currently include adjusting flag lines on the muckpile in an attempt to account for displacement from original, pre-blast locations. To improve upon standard non-electric blasting practices, a series of evaluation blasts using an electronic initiation system (Orica i-konTM) was conducted in the summer of 2002. The primary objective of the evaluation blasts was to design shots that would segregate the ore and waste blocks into distinct muckpiles. Due to surface delay burning front limitations, truly effective ore and waste segregation blasting is difficult to accomplish with non-electric initiation systems for all but the most basic of ore geometries. The electronic detonator evaluation blasts produced visible boundaries in post blast muckpiles, identified by troughs or low areas, that closely matched the actual locations of pre-blast ore control flag lines based on blast hole assays. By blasting the ore and waste into distinguishable piles that were flagged and excavated accordingly, it is believed that blast-induced ore loss and dilution was reduced.

An overland conveyor was constructed at a surface coal mine to reduce the truck haul distance and make the operation more efficient. An important element in this system is a truck dump facility to transfer coal from truck to conveyor. Mechanically stabilized earth retaining walls were employed to accommodate the coal processing equipment, including the crusher, in this facility. These retaining walls are close enough to the pits being mined that blasting induced vibrations must be considered in analyses of the wall structural stability.

Surface mine blasting was recently investigated as a potential source of high concentrations of stray gases found in nearby residences of western Pennsylvania. In one incident carbon monoxide was detected in a home and in the other, high concentrations of carbon dioxide were found in a home. Both carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide are by-products of blasting. However, other potential sources of these gases may also exist in a residential setting. In each case, gas chromatography (GC) and carbon isotopic analyses were used to define atmospheric concentrations inside the homes, and to determine the source of a stray gas. Molecular and isotopic analyses provide geochemical evidence as to the origin and source of the stray gas. This paper discusses elements of a stray gas investigation and the analyses necessary to identify the source of a stray gas.

Description of Project: Tamar Group’s civil division was awarded a contract to implode the Sun Hotel, an abandoned 14-story building located along Bat Yam’s coastline, roughly two kilometers south of Tel Aviv, Israel. On Nov. 6, 2012, Tamar Group’s experts positioned explosives in strategic locations of the building, targeting its central pillars, which then caused the building to collapse within seconds. Tamar Group used a relatively small amount of explosives in order to generate a well-controlled blast. This is the largest scale demolition carried out in Israel to date.
