This paper explores the sustainable use of the explosive’s energy for rock blasting and its role on the performance of downstream unit operations in mining applications. Since energy efficiency is becoming important for long term mining strategies, cost-effective optimization strategies are required to increase productivity and revenue while minimizing environmental impact. These optimization strategies involve continuous ability to model and measure all related phenomena and operational performance, integrated under a continuous improvement program where all involved counterparts act in close coordination. Although mining is complex, it can be regarded as a set of interconnected processes, where energy is consumed in a sequence, following all unit operations from the pit to the concentration. In this sense, the performance of downstream operations is potentially influenced by the initial energy input, since the explosive is the source of all energy used for rock fragmentation and heave. In this line, sustainable energy blasting is recognized as one of the main strategies for mine energy optimization projects. Finally, a special case study from an important gold mine in South America is presented, where benefits of a sustainable blasting energy strategies has been proved to deliver important downstream benefits.

On July 21, 2004, a trial blast using electronic detonators was conducted in India for the first time in an opencast mine at Pundi-E Quarry of TISCO, West Bokaro. Orica-IEL conducted the test using electronic detonators. To provide necessary technical feedback on wider applicability, CMRI scientists also participated in the trial blast.

During the Summer of 1997, rock excavation was carried out for construction of the Centre Block Underground Services building (CBUS) abutting the most historically significant structural complex in Canada, the Parliament Buildings in Ottawa. Controlled blasting was required for the removal of 25,000 cubic metres of limestone bedrock within the ten week time window of Parliamentary recess. A test blast program carried out in 1996 had established that close blasting was viable even within the very restrictive limits considered necessary to preserve the structural and cosmetic integrity of these historic structures. In total 300 blasting operations were required to complete the excavation, including the 20 test blasts conducted in 1996. Based on attenuation characteristics established for the site during the trial blast phase, the blasting contractor proposed excavating the CBUS site in three zones. Each zone contained differing drill patterns, depths and explosive loads. Vibration intensities, air concussion levels and displacements across representative existing cracks were measured and recorded at numerous observation points within and around the Centre Block and the Library of Parliament, as well as on the grounds of the Parliamentary Precinct. The blasting portion of the excavation was completed within budget in less than eight weeks, well within the tune window available. Comparison of very extensive pre and post-blast condition surveys revealed no damage to the existing structures on Parliament Hill as a result of these operations.

This paper deals with a new variation of the cast blasting technique, where-in the object is to cast the economic deposit out front under the overburden, while avoiding dilution from the floor material. This paper presents data and theorem to calculate the risk of experiencing undesirable lightning related events while blasting or while engaged in other lightning sensitive activities. The paper provides an overview of lightning hazards in blasting operations and a brief history of lightning related blasting accidents. Lightning continues to be the primary cause of premature initiations of explosives in mining; on average, over two such incidents are reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) each year. The energy contained in lightning discharges and how this energy sets off explosives in mining is presented. Three categories of lightning warning methods: public media, lightning detectors, and atmospheric electrostatic field measurement are discussed. The remainder of the paper presents recently acquired data on the spatial characteristics of lightning development. This data is used to estimate the risk assumed by blasters under certain conditions. Risk estimations are made for electric and nonelectric blasting if persons are evacuated when cloud-to-ground (c-g) lightning approaches within a certain distance. For example, about 0.6% of all c-g lightning strikes have no other c-g lightning strikes within 25 miles in the previous 30 minutes. The paper shows that a typical blaster using nonelectric initiation in a high lightning density area with a 100% accurate lightning detector set to alarm at 25 miles would have a lightning caused unplanned detonation every 14,000 years.

IMESAFR (IME Safety Analysis for Risk) is a quantitative risk assessment software tool developed by the Institute of Makers of Explosives (IME) and A-P-T Research, Inc. It is used for managing risk in the commercial explosives industry, the newest version of the software was completed in 2012. This paper discusses the use of this software package in conjunction with data collected for a television series on the reenactment of the ‘London Blitz’, a 57-day bombing of the City of London in 1940. In this reenactment, purpose built structures using period design and materials were constructed at a test facility in the North of England. Five devices ranging in size from 20 kg (44 lb) to 1100 kg (2400 lb) were detonated at varying distances from the structures; each blast was monitored by EPC-UK and the resulting structural damage was analyzed. Data recorded from the blasts included high-speed videos, photographs before and after each event and air overpressure readings. The same data was inputted into the IMESAFR software package to assess the risk imposed on the residents of London during this time. The appropriateness of this tool for evaluating structures built using historical practices is discussed. Data from the full scale tests is compared to effects predicted by IMESAFR. Further analysis of the risk recommendations produced by IMESAFR is compared to the actual damage assessed during the large scale tests.

Kennecott Energy's Colowyo Coal Mine is the largest open pit coal mine in Colorado and produces 5.5 MM tons per year. Colowyo uses the terrace mining method to recover up to seven seams of rolling coal ranging in thickness from 5 to 20 feet. Draglines are used to strip overburden ranging from 60 to 120 feet thick off two coal seams. These two seams are characterized by soft and fold fractured coal and in past practice cast blasting caused excessive coal damage. As a result, to ensure minimal coal damage and high coal recoveries, the overburden was excavated in two passes. The first pass removed the upper overburden to within 10 to 20 feet of the coal seam. The second pass removed the remaining overburden above the coal. Two-pass mining was effective in controlling coal damage, but also carried significant additional costs.

Near-field and close-in blasting can be safe and efficient, near engineered structures, if the dynamic reaction of structural members to blasting vibrations are considered. Safe particle velocity criteria can be derived from allowable safe static flexural deflections and critical frequencies. Control of close-in blasting can be accomplished using low-pass filtering of the particle velocity signal at the critical frequency. The CETE Mediterranee laboratory at Aix-en-Provence, France, a branch of the Ministry of Roads and Bridges has -pioneered this approach and successfully applied it to major road cuts and tunnels in built-up areas, as well as a major powerhouse expansion project in Africa. This approach is presently being used for a spillway rehabilitation project in Quebec, Canada. This paper exposes- the theoretical aspects and gives case histories of its use. The SCS-15 an automated, peak reading, data acquisition device is described.

Wall control is a significant issue for many mines. Improvements to the design process for blasts adjacent to temporary or final walls will require better measurement tools and predictive models. Orica Explosives has developed capability in both these areas and uses them to guide better wall control blasting practices. Vibration and gas pressure were monitored behind a series of production blasts and single hole blasts at the Freeport Grasberg Operations Opencut Mine. The blasts used ANFO in both 3 11 mm and 35 1 mm blastholes in a blast design which reduced the charge weight by between 30 to 50% in the final row of the production blasts. Single hole blast data were obtained by delaying the last hole in the production blast. Vibration levels were within the range often associated with vibration induced damage: 178 to 1080 mm/s at distances between 14-75 metres from the blast.

The emergence of electronic detonators for use in production mine blasting has enabled mining professionals to rethink the traditional blast design methodologies that pertain to timing. In many ways, electronic detonators can allow great advances in productivity, cost effectiveness, fragmentation, and safety. This paper reports on an independent study quantifying the accuracy of two electronic and two non-electric systems in which 674 detonators were tested. This research aimed to determine the accuracy of commercially available electronic detonators as compared to non-electric shocktube systems. Each system was tested over the viable ranges of delays available. Statistical models were then applied to quantify the scatter present in each system. Suggestions for the use of electronic detonators are made from the findings of this work. This work was made possible through funding from the United States Department of the Interior Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.

The Sentinel open pit copper mine, operated by First Quantum Minerals Ltd, is located in the North West province of Zambia. The Sentinel orebody is a sediment-hosted, structurally modified deposit in which mineralisation is contained in the phyllite formation, which occurs as a series of layered, continuous sheets having a northerly 20 to 30⁰ dip. The persistent nature of the geological structure can lead to the generation of large slabs when joints are relatively close together or very large blocks when joints are more widely spaced. With standard blasting methodologies, the challenging fragmentation most commonly occurs in the stemming zone and blast interfaces, reducing excavation rates and increasing the risk of crusher bridging events and reduced throughput. A generalised approach to increase powder factor would increase in drill and blast costs and would not be sufficient to target the specific cause of the challenging fragmentation. Implementing differential blast energy based on post blast requirements for different material type, such as ore and waste, and rock mass characteristics is not new in the mining industry. High-energy blasts for ore aim to produce finer materials, enhancing downstream processes such as crushing and grinding, while reducing power consumption and increasing throughput. Conversely, waste rock often requires less energy in order to deliver optimised fragmentation for loading and hauling efficiency. Identifying and applying optimum blast energy to specific material type and geological domains will not only ensure smoother and efficient operations throughout downstream processes, but will have a direct impact on overall profitability of the entire operation. This paper will describe the methods used to model and implement differential blasting across a range of material types in order to deliver the required blast outcomes for ore and waste and the impact on downstream processes and drill and blast unit cost.

A major difference between electronic and pyrotechnic detonators is that, in almost all but the simplest of blast layouts, computer software is required to plan a blast using electronic detonators. While it may be possible to program delay times without software, using only the manufacturer’s control hardware, the full potential of electronic detonators can only be realized through software. Until recently, the only software available has been provided by the suppliers of the electronic detonators. These usually have just enough features to create a hole layout and to assign times to the detonators in the holes. The software is also able to communicate only with the manufacturer’s detonators. This means that the client may be compelled to change several parts of the blasting process when a different delay system is adopted, from design through to implementation and reporting, even though these may be sub-optimal at the client’s mine. While many authors have demonstrated improvements in blasting outcomes using electronic detonators, very few have discussed how the delay times were calculated. Where the calculations are discussed, it is also obvious that the delay times must be monitored and re-evaluated as conditions in the mine change. For example, the principles of superposition and scaled distance, burden relief and energy cooperation between holes should be checked constantly for different locations within the mine, changes in rock properties, or even for differences between design and actual hole positions. The most common methods in blast design software to calculate delay times are inter-hole interval, relief contour and direct editing. Although they are simple in concept, they can result in fundamental errors if they are not applied correctly. The software for electronic blast designs should be capable of not just a timing calculation, but also of showing, to some degree, the impact and interaction of the calculated times.

The Phu Kham Copper-Gold Operation (PKM) is a large-scale open pit mine located in northern Laos. It was developed and is operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited (PBM) a Lao-registered subsidiary company of Australian incorporated, PanAust Limited. Production commenced at Phu Kham in 2008. Since the second half of 2016, there has been a significant increase in ore hardness and this has negatively impacted the PKM concentrator and resulted in lower SAG mill throughput rates. Over the remaining life of mine, the changing ore body and increase in ore hardness is forecast to continue as the pit deepens and the availability of softer blending ores reduce. To manage this risk, PKM initiated a Hard Ores Management Program to determine the most effective way to improve the mill throughput of harder ores. This involved conducting a number of innovative and process control driven blasting trials to optimize run-of-mine (ROM) fragmentation and other blasting outcomes. From 2016 to 2017, the performance of high powder factor blasting, electronic detonators and fast timing, high velocity of detonation (VOD) explosives, double-priming, and deck blasting, were individually and systematically assessed. The success of each blasting trial was then based on a ‘value for money’ criteria. This criteria is a cost / benefit analysis that weighed-up the additional cost to implement the trial against the measured improvement in mill throughput. Electronic and high VOD 90:10 emulsion:ANFO blasts were determined to have the best value for money, achieving an increase in mill throughput of 54% compared to baseline. This paper discusses how the implementation of an innovative and process control driven blasting trial methodology was able to successfully manage the hard ore challenges at PKM. In addition, this success was achieved without any major cost implications, safety incidents or process plant set-backs.

The critical nature of detonator function in blast design and its effects upon performance and safety of a blasting operation are well documented. Numerous laboratory and field studies have shown dynamic shock waves, generated by the detonating explosives in a shot, to be detrimental to the performance of the explosive columns in the adjacent boreholes. Laboratory tests conducted in Japan have explored the possible effects of dynamic precompression upon cartridges of emulsion explosives, which had been sensitized with different hotspot void producing methods. These tests uncovered significant differences in the magnitude of the dynamic shock wave pressures measured inside the different emulsion explosive cartridges, and demonstrated these pressure differences by crushing detonator shells inserted inside the emulsion cartridge. Basically, the results of these tests clearly showed the magnitude of the compressive force applied to the detonator inside the primed explosive cartridge to be a function of the mechanism that had been used to sensitize the emulsion (i.e., glass microspheres, plastic spheres, chemical gassing). The current study was designed to further explore the actual detonator failure mechanism in these dynamic precompression tests using live detonators inside the emulsion cartridge as opposed to empty detonator shells. The testing involved inserting commercial delay detonators inside emulsion charges, which had been sensitized with common hotspot void producing agents, and subjecting the primed explosive cartridge to the dynamic pressure wave generated by an underwater donor explosive charge. The effects of variations in the emulsion’s sensitization method upon the damage inflicted to the detonator were studied. Depending upon the degree of detonator damage, detonator crushing can lead to varying degrees of detonator malfunctions, ranging from sympathetic initiation of the detonator, to a reduction in delay time accuracy, to reduced detonator output, to complete detonator failure. Each of these malfunctions can have serious detrimental effects upon the performance and safety of a blasting operation.
