Many problems which are initially described as deficiencies in blasting or support are directly related to drilling. At the Metropolitan Nashville International Airport, with its more than 600 scheduled daily flights from American Airlines hub operations, other scheduled airline flights, Tennessee Air National Guard operations, as well as numerous industry air flights, the excavation of 300,000 cubic yards of rock was required without disrupting airport operations for a cut and cover underground tunnel with a 4 lane US Highway and new airplane runway to extend across it's top. In addition to the excavation, the removed rock was to be broken to specification type that was clean and of small size for fill in another area of the airport property. The blasting was limited to two 1/2 hour windows per day and stiff monetary penalties were in place for schedule slippage of each phase of the project.

Homestake Mining Corporations' open cut operation at Lead SD. experienced a highwall failure in October of 1993. The failure released a 75' section of rock wall at the 5280' level. It came to rest on the 5200' safety bench. Since work was in progress below the failure, this rock had to be removed for safety.

ICI has developed a new electrical shotfiring system which has markedly improved safety features and operational advantages over existing initiating systems. The development of the 'Magnadet' Electric Detonator and the related product 'Magna' Primer were described in a paper presented at the 1981 S.E.E. Annual Conference. Since then the system has been adopted in many different applications and conditions around the world. The present paper describes these applications, the experience gained and the more recent developments which have taken place.

Habits take us where we were yesterday and attitudes tend to keep us there. Until recently, little had been accomplished to improve conventional explosive energy for use offshore. But with the special requirements of the Offshore Oil Industry, and particularly in the North Sea, most equipment, products and services must be specialized as well. Previous attempts to excavate a trench for a sealine in surf areas had been impossible to accomplish. But with the application of safe, controlled explosive energy, an impossible task to accomplish yesterday has now become a reality. Explosive energy, often overlooked as a convenient and economical offshore tool, excavated a clean trench underwater for a 40" sealine at Djeno in the African Congo recently.

Current image based systems used to measure fragmentation are measuring the two dimensional presentation of a set of three dimensional objects. A two dimensional measurement of fragmentation restricts both sampling and particle size classification and hence provides a different evaluation of the fragmentation to that of a conventional sieve analysis of the same sampled material. Many modern image based fragmentation measurement systems attempt to convert this two dimensional analysis to a three dimensional analysis in order to deliver a "real" measurement of the fragmentation distribution. This paper questions the necessity and validity of this transformation and lays down the framework for the establishment of a standard in fragmentation measurement based on a two dimensional analysis. The results of image based measurements of laboratory prepared samples indicate that differences in mass distributions (3D distribution) can be mapped by an appropriate image based analysis which provides area versus particle size information.

Both theory and experience tell us that spatially distributed energy sources generate a more complex family of seismic waves than do point sources. The resulting effects in the near field (for close-in blasting) are significantly different than those from point sources although, at great distances from the source, the seismic waves take on many of the characteristics of point sources and can often be treated as such.

This paper will describe blast design modifications that have been made at the Island Copper Mine, near Port Hardy, British Columbia. To date, two additional designs have been implemented in an effort to reduce final wall damage and increase productivity. The typical blast patterns in use at Island Copper were monitored in an effort to build up data to which new designs could be compared.

The University of Missouri-Rolla (UMR) has historically maintained a manual, paper inventory of explosives stored and used at the university. Although this system was accurate for inventory control and reporting criteria, it was labor intense and delays in record keeping were predominant. A directive from the university’s administration mandated the development of a precise real time system “on-line” to maintain and control the explosives inventory in line with the universities new chemical tracking policies.

Noise and vibration produced by blasting generate curiosity and concern from neighbors. Experiments conducted in Sweden, Canada and U.S.A. have established that fine cracks in the plaster--the weakest part of building components--appear at a particle velocity of 4.0" per second or more. Taking into account the margin of safety, the safe zone criteria of 2.0" per second has been established.

Various explosives and perimeter control blasting techniques have been developed in order to minimize rock damage associated with the conventional drilling and blasting operations. The success of perimeter control blasting depends on many factors grouped in three categories: rock mass features, blast design and implementation, and explosive parameters.

The Bureau of Mines was funded by the Office of Surface Mining (OSM) to determine how blast vibrations from a local surface coal mine were affecting homes in the towns of Daylight and McCutchanville, located in southwestern Indiana near Evansville. Although Daylight was about two miles from the blasting and McCutchanville four to five miles away, many residents claimed that blast vibrations were damaging their homes. At least one citizen felt that the vibrations worsened at the time the mine began cast blasting.
