Data on smog-forming reactivities of exhaust aldehydes are scarce. Such data were obtained by irradiating in a smog chamber typical exhaust aldehydes, individually and in exhaustlike mixtures. Observed reactivity manifestations were rate of nitrogen dioxide formation (RNO2) and yields of oxidant, peroxyacetyl nitrate, and formaldehyde. Results showed that exhaust aldehydes vary widely in reactivity. Formaldehyde showed high RNO2 reactivity but low oxidant yield; benzaldehyde, [m]-, and [p]-tolualdehyde were totally unreactive when irradiated individually; [o]-tolualdehyde was reactive. In mixtures, benzaldehyde manifested reactivity in terms of peroxybenzoyl nitrate yield. Exhaust aldehydes as a group are judged to be as reactive as the exhaust olefin group. The importance of the aldehyde contribution to exhaust reactivity and methods for assessing such contribution are discussed.

The principal minerals produced in the Dominion of Fiji in 1982 were unrefined gold, silver, and tellurium. The combined value of these commodities was about $16 million,2 representing over 85% of the total value of mineral output. Cement, sand and gravel, and quarry products were the other minerals produced in Fiji. Despite the small part played by minerals in Fiji's economy, exploration on land and in the coastal areas was carried out by several international mining companies representing Australian, British, Canadian, West German, and U.S. interests. At the end of 1982, 30 prospecting licenses covering 2,300 square kilometers were issued. Most licenses were for copper, zinc, gold, and silver. Total expenditure on mineral exploration was $3.5 million.

Many different types of structures and materials have been used to build mineral processing facilities throughout the years. Although structure type and building material were not viewed as significant factors affecting the health of employees in these facilities when they were built, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has found that building type can impact respirable dust and noise levels. NIOSH performed a study in which it evaluated three building types: masonry, an open-structure design, and a steel-sided design. This study indicated that an open-structure design (no walls) was superior from both a dust and noise (health) standpoint when compared to the other two structure types. Therefore, companies may want to consider this design when building new structures.

An oil well penetrating the Pittsburgh bituminous coalbed in northern West Virginia was plugged and safely mined through 3 months later. A sensitive chemical tracer, introduced into the oil reservoir before the test, was not detected in the mine air following the plugging and during mining of the pillar and penetration of the well. Effectiveness of the plugging in preventing reservoir gas from entering the mine through the well hole was verified by continuous monitoring of the mine air for indications of sulfur hexafluoride, an inert gas detectable in amounts as minute as 112 part per billion. Expand- able cement and fly ash-gel-water slurry were utilized to seal the well above and below the coal seam. Three other wells were also plugged using various techniques.

This report is an economic evaluation of the production of hydrogen in a continuous system by the steam oxidation of partially reduced iron oxide in a fluidized bed at 7 atmospheres using producer gas to reduce the iron oxide. The oxidation-reduction step is based on experimental data obtained by the Bureau of Mines at the Pittsburgh Coal Research Center. The estimated capital requirement for a plant producing 30 million std. c.f.d.3 of 99.8 percent purity hydrogen at a discharge pressure of 450 p.s.i.g. is $13,100,000, using January 1961 equipment cost data. Based on a 330-day operating year, the operating cost before profit and taxes with coal price as a variable is estimated to be:

As part of its mission to reduce pollution associated with mineral production, the Bureau of Mines is developing a dewatering technique for phosphatic clay waste that uses a flocculant, polyethylene oxide (PEO). This flocculant forms strong, stable flocs, which can be partially dewatered on a static screen and dewatered further on a rotary screen. Using this technique, a field test unit (FTU) was operated at a nominal 100 gal/min. Consolidated phosphatic clay material containing 20 percent solids was produced when feed slurries of 3 percent solids were treated with 0.69 pound of PEO per ton of feed solids. Pit and column tests indicated that the PEO-treated material continued to dewater; compacted products containing 40 percent solids were obtained after 45 days.

The 18th National First-Aid and Mine Rescue Contest was held in the Memorial Auditorium, Buffalo, New Vork, October 5, 6, and 7, 1959. The meet was sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Mines and the Joseph A. Holmes Safety Association, in cooperation with State mine inspection agencies, management and labor of the mineral extractive industries, and other safety minded groups. The Arrangements Committee, as authorized by the General Committee, made a11 the necessary arrangements for conducting the 1959 contest. Members of the Arrangements Committee were: Harry Gandy, Jr. (chairman), National Coal Association; James B. Benson, Southern Coal Producers' Association; Charles Ferguson, United Mine Workers of America; George C. "As movement or transportation of coal is second only in importance to actual mining, and as the latter is wholly dependent on the former, the efficiency of the haulage system often determines the efficiency of the entire plant. Safe or accident-free transportation is essential, also, because no attempt is made to divorce safety and efficiency, it being realized that they are inseparable.Most of the Ruhr mines were opened decades ago, and many features that were considered up-to-date then are now obsolete. Progress in developing haulage systems has been slow, chiefly because it would be very costly to change many to accomodate more modern equipment. These systems are being altered or modernized slowly, as capital permits. The only revolutionary changes that have been made in mine haulage are the use of larger locomo¬tives and cars, in the movement of shuttle cars, and in the adoption of skip hoisting. Most Ruhr shafts, however, will not accomodate large cars, the secondary roadways are too narrow for large locomotives, and the coal is too soft to permit skip hoisting because degradation would be too great. Therefore, notable advances have been made only at newer plants, where allowances have been made for modern equipment.The shafts are deep (average 2,300 feet) and of comparatively small diameter. The small bore was designed to reduce costs of sinking and lining. Generally, the shafts are lined throughout with masonry; however, most of the buntons and guides are wooden.The hoisting engines arc installed in masonry structures, and where more than one hoist is used they are placed on opposite sides of the shaft to eliminate as much noise as possible (fig. 1). This arrangement also prevents an engineer from acting on any signals except those transmitted to him. A few hoisting engines are mounted in the headframes (fig. 2). The hoisting engines are equipped with overwind, overspeed, and auxiliary braking devices, which are tested frequently and kept operative at all times. The signal code is displayed in view of the engineer, and a light or dial indicator informs him of the cage's position in the shaft. Many hoists are equipped with re¬cording devices, which show on a continuous chart the speed of hoisting as well as any delays throughout the 24-hour period.A Koepe system of winding is in general use because of the depth of shafts (fig. 3). With this system, a single rope passes over a single-groove, large-diameter sheave attached to the motive power, and the ends of the rope, after passing over the head sheaves, are attached to the cages. A flat tail rope suspended in the shaft and connected to the bottom of the cages serves to balance the system. Both steam and electric engines are used to activate the hoisting system, end the engines are capable of moving at least a 50-percent overload.The ropes are necessarily of large diameter (2-1/2 inches and greater), and flexibility decreases as rope diameter increases. To overcome the unwieldiness .of large-diameter ropes as shafts become deeper, a four-rope system is being tried at one mine (fig.4). In this system the load is equalized between four ropes which permits much smaller ropes to be used. All hoist ropes are inspected daily and discarded after 2 years service unless special permission for longer service is granted by the Mine Inspectorate, and then only after thorough visual and electromagnetic inspection."

By 1980, the U.S. mining community had reached a broad consensus regarding coal pillar design. The pillar load could be estimated from tributary area theory, and the pillar strength from empirical formulas and laboratory coal strength testing. Then the growth of longwall mining required new thinking. Recently, powerful design methods have emerged from analysis of large data bases of real-world pillar successes and failures. These include the Analysis of Retreat Mining Pillar Stability (ARMPS), the Analysis of Longwall Pillar Stability (ALPS), the Mark- Bieniawski rectangular pillar strength formula, and guidelines for preventing massive pillar collapses. Sophisticated numerical models have also helped transform the pillar design landscape. In the process, our understanding of pillar mechanics has been greatly enriched. One mineral deposit in the Golden Trout Wilderness has potential. The currently producing Pine Tree Mine on the Little Kern River has an estimated 120,000 tons (109,000 t) each of indicated and inferred reserves averaging 0.77 percent tungsten trioxide. No apparent potential exists for base or precious metal or other mineral deposits. INTRODUCTION The Golden Trout Wilderness, established by Congress in 1978 under Public Law 95-237, encompasses 240,000 acres (97,000 ha) of conifer-forested, rolling, upland plateau at the headwaters of the Kern River in Inyo and Sequoia National Forests (fig. 1). Abundant streams locally contain Golden Trout, namesake of the area. Major roads serve the area to the west and east of the Wilderness; access is poor to the north and south.

Hardness, tensile strength, and impact toughness of dry and brine-saturated sandstone specimens were measured at ambient, cryogenic, and elevated temperatures as a measure of the relative stability of reservoir rocks for subsurface disposal of liquid wastes. Hardness measurements were inconclusive. Tensile strength and impact toughness were significantly higher at -320° F than at ambient temperature, but were relatively unaffected at 700° F. Impact toughness was reduced by subjecting the specimens to three cycles of rapid temperature changes (thermal shock) over a 1,000° F range. Tensile strength of brine-saturated sandstone was less than that of dry sandstone. Based on results of the tests, reservoir sandstone likely would be stable if exposed to extreme temperatures of liquid wastes, although rapid changes in waste temperatures should be avoided.

The Bureau of Mines developed a mathematical model to calculate the aerodynamically induced lifting of coal and rock dust from a composite deposition on a mine entry floor and the subsequent transport of the dust ahead of the propagating combustion zone of a coal dust explosion. For a series of experimental explosibility tests approximated by combustion zones that expand at a constant flame velocity, the mass fraction of airborne rock dust ahead of the flame front, as well as the mass fraction overtaken by the combustion zone, was calculated. A statistical analysis of the theoretical results demonstrated with a high level of confidence that the propagating and nonpropagating test samples belonged to sepa-rate populations. This analysis was further supported by an independent model of the average temperature over the combustion zone.

To reduce front-end loader (FEL) collision accidents by detecting obstacles in the rear blind area. The Problem Federal regulations require an audible backup alarm to activate when an FEL is backing. Since the device is constantly being activated, the warning soon becomes a normal part of the mine environment and is less effective as a warning device. Also, when several machines are working together, it is difficult to detect by ear alone just which machine is backing. Approach The Bureau defined the location for hazard detection to include an area extending 15 to 20 ft behind the rear bumper of an FEL. Then, existing surveillance and detection technology was assembled, ruggedness, and applied to the FEL's rear blind area to form a new discriminating backup alarm system employing either infrared light, ultrasonics or radar

"INTRODUCTION This paper is one of a series being published by the Bureau of Mines pertaining to an investigation on the use of stemming in metal mines now being conducted at the Mount Weather Testing Adit. Silver ores from the Candelaria District, Nevada, and Round Mountain District, Colorado, were investigated mineralogically and metallurgically. Silver minerals of four distinct groups were identified: (1) silver sulfide; (2) argentojarosite; (3) silver contained in the iron oxide; and (4) manganese carbonate-oxide minerals, Electrooxidation and acid-chloride leaching techniques were investigated as means of altering silver minerals, and their effects on subsequent silver extraction were determined. Application of the knowledge obtained from mineral leaching studies resulted in development of a sulfur dioxide-sodium chloride leaching sequence for extracting silver from these types of ores. Silver extractions of 80 to 85 percent were obtained by leaching the ores with a sulfurous acid-sodium chloride system. This was an increase of 9 to 61 percent silver extraction over that obtained by conventional cyanidation techniques.

The Bureau of Mines conducted pioneering batch and laboratory cyclic tests that simulated plant operation in developing a procedure for acidulating phosphate rock with fluosilicic acid. Both high-grade deslimed phosphate rock and low-grade phosphate rock samples were treated. The most promising results were obtained by acidulating des limed high-grade material. In a series of seven cyclic tests, 85.4 percent of the P20S was recovered in solutions. The average P2O5 content of the phosphoric acid-monocalcium phosphate solutions of the first step was 156 grams per liter, and the average fluorine content was 4.7 grams per liter. Residues had an average fluorine content of 30.7 percent and contained 83.9 percent of the total fluorine in the charge materials. Some fluorine was lost by volatilization.

Significantly reduce respirable dust exposures of longwall shearer operators when cutting out at the headgate. Approach As a result of Bureau research, a ventilation curtain is recommended to be mounted between the stage loader and the coal rib to more effectively prevent the ventilation air from blowing across the shearer drum as it cuts out at the headgate. Some mine operators already employ this method of reducing dust, but a vast majority do not. How It Works One source of extreme concentrations of respirable dust for longwall shearer operators is the shearer headgate drum as it cuts through into the headgate entry. As the drum cuts into the entry, it is exposed to the primary ventilation airstream. The high velocity air passes through and over the rotating drum, picking up large quantities of dust.

A ferrous chloride-oxygen leaching system was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Mines to determine its effectiveness for recovering copper and silver from a tetrahedrite concentrate that had been pretreated to remove a majority of the antimony. The pretreated concentrate contained coppers, silver, lead, zinc, antimony, and arsenic. Parameters affecting metal extraction (such as temperature, pressure, amount of ferrous chloride, and initial hydro-gen ion concentration) were studied. Copper extraction of 98 pct was achieved by leaching 4 hours at 40 pounds per square inch gage (psig) and 100° C. Copper was recovered from leach solutions by cementation with iron, and the resulting ferrous chloride was recycled. Leaching the residue with cyanide followed by electrowinning recovered 99.7 pct of the silver. Iron, antimony, arsenic, and sulfur reported to the tailings.
