This chapter focuses on smoke as it relates to escape from underground mine fires. Among the topics discussed are the measurement of visibility in smoke; smoke-related hazards such as the production of CO, hydrochloric acid (HCI), or other byproducts of combustion; and miners' personal experiences while escaping through smoke. Smoke Measurement and Visibility In general, smoke consists of hundreds of thousands of very small particles. These particles have some "size," usually expressed in terms of their diameters, and they have some concentrations, usually expressed either in the number of these particles per unit volume or the total mass of the particles per unit volume. Humans cannot see individual smoke particles because they are too small. Similarly, "umber concentrations" and "mass concentrations" of smoke particles do not have much meaning to people unless they are trained technically. Still, individuals know that they can see smoke, independent of all the technical jargon used to describe it. Also, they know that when the smoke level gets too high, it is no longer visible. In fact, nothing is visible because the smoke absorbs all of the light in its surroundings. The eye is only sensitive to light in the wavelength region from about 400 nm to about 700 nm. The maximum sensitivity of the human eye is to light that has a wavelength of about 555 nm. It is important to know how the eye responds to light because if its response is known, it is possible to use a light detector that has almost the same response as the eye. Such a detector can then be used to quantify the visible characteristics of smoke because it responds in the same manner as the human eye. Smoke is visible because it either scatters or attenuates (diminishes) light. In some instances, smoke is visible because the smoke particles reflect light which is then detected by the eye. The eye actually "sees" an intensity of light that has been reflected from a cloud of smoke particles. Imagine shining a flashlight into a cloud of smoke. Someone off to the side can actually "see" the beam of light as it traverses the smoke cloud. This is called scattering. Smoke is also visible be¬cause it attenuates light. Imagine having someone shine a flashlight into your eyes. As smoke begins to build up along the beam of the flashlight, the light begins to dim. The smoke is visible because it is now reducing the intensity of light that falls upon the eye. As the smoke level increases, it is said to obscure our visibility. When the beam is no longer visible, the smoke obscuration is said to be 100%. In other words, none of the light energy from the flashlight makes its way through the cloud of smoke. Another way of saying that the obscuration is 100% is to say that the transmission of light through the cloud is zero.

"IntroductionIn a typical incremental loading test, the AE activity increases rapidly in the initial stage of the loading. It is associated with initial closure under compression of favorably oriented cracks already present, together with sliding of crack faces against each other /1/. After the initial stage, crack closure and movement largely cease and the AE activity drops to a barely detectable level /2/. In the final stage of loading test, cracking associated with the onset of inelastic deformation' occurs, and the rate of AE rapidly increases /3/ indicating an increase in the •number of events associated with higher number of microcracks. To understand better primary fragmentation process, Anderson and Ruzzi conducted tests to identify a practical method of monitoring fracture development in rock, as caused by an excavation tool /4/. They proved that a relationship existed between the AE activity, generated during fracturing and the amount of fracture surface area created.A process of fragmentation, demonstrated by conical bits acting orthogonal to the flat surface of block of coal specimen with and without lateral confining pressure is presented here. The monitoring of AE during the fracturing process of rock/coal has been a very useful indirect method in studying fracture mechanism.Specimen PreparationLarge blocks of Waynesburg coal were obtained from a surface mine. These blocks were then out and molded to approximate dimensions of 25.4 x 25.4 x 15.2 'an (10 x 10 x 6 in.). These specimens were instrumented with three strain gages in a 45 degree rosette. One was mounted parallel to the bedding plane direction, another was tinted at an angle of 45 degree from the bedding plane direction and the third was mounted perpendicular to the bedding .plane direction. Each of the three strain gages were set 5.1 an (2 in.) away from the impact point.Typical Test ProcedureIn a typical experiment, the specimen was placed in the confining chamber.Predetermined equivalent in-situ stresses were applied to the specimen by using two sets of hydraulic cylinders. Two 1 in. thick steel plates ware positioned between the sample and the hydraulic cylinders in order to distribute the pressure uniformly over the whole surface of the specimen. The LVDT null position was adjusted with respect to the coal face. After setting the LVDT, the bit and associated weight was lifted to a predetermined height (equivalent to a predetermined kinetic energy) by a win. The three strain gages were balanced using the signal conditioner and the output was recorded by a 6 channel strip chart recorder. The experimental set-up is shown in Figure 1."

"INTRODUCTION Two holes were drilled on the G. S. Stiner zinc prospect, in the Lead Mine Bend area of Union County, Tenn. The holes were drilled in the vicinity of an area of gossan float and were bottomed in the Maynardville formation of the Nolichucky shale. Drilling was started January 24 and completed February 16, 1947. The total footage drilled was 421.2 feet.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIn its program of investigation of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. This information circular is one of a series, published by the Federal Bureau of Mines, on methods and costs of mining uranium ore on the Colorado Plateau. This report describes the relatively small-scale operations of the Salt Wash miner: The mining method followed, the equipment used, and the production costs. It describes 10 lease-operated mines of Union Carbide: Nuclear Co. that are typical of Salt Wash operations on the plateau. These mines lie within the Uravan mineral belt3/ and arc in the Gateway, Bull Canyon, and Uravan mining districts. (See fig. 1.) Generally the ore bodies occur as irregular, discontinuous layers of ore minerals within sandstone beds in the Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation. The ore bodies sometimes occur as rolls, pod associat with carbonaceous trash, or tabular masses. Their size and erratic distribution preclude the use of a prearranged and uniform stoping system. The mining method is simply to follow the ore and leave open scopes behind.

The motor gasoline that is being marketed in the United States this winter (1928-29) is slightly more volatile than that gold a year ago. This characteristic is shown by a slight lowering of the distillation temperatures, particularly at the average initial and 20 per cent boiling points. Daring the past mine and a half years the Bureau of Mines has made semi annual surreys of the gasoline marketed in the United States; the Survey just completed is the nineteenth in the series. The 12 cities in which samples have been collected were chosen as representative of the more important marketing territories, as it was obviously impracticable to obtain a sample of every gasoline sold in the entire country.

This Bureau of Mines publication describes the plan used to instrument two longwall gateroads at the Powhatan No. 4 Mine of the Quarto Mining Co. Vibrating wire stressmeters, flat jack U-cells, multipoint extensometer stations, and convergence stations were installed in or on the coal pillars, roof bolts, and roof strata of the gateroad entries. The instruments measure pillar stresses, bolt loadings, and strata movements as the gateroad entries are developed and the longwall panel(s) is mined. The report details only the instrumentation plan of the longwall gateroads and not the evaluation of any subsequent data. This is because a complete analy-sis of the data cannot be made until extraction of the longwall panel(s) is complete.

The Bureau of Mines monitored a rock-burst-prone pillar in a metallic ore vein, up to and through failure, to measure its reactions to increasing loads, as it was mined. Three parameters were monitored: the stress changes at chosen points within the pillar, the displacement characteristics of the drift above the pillar, and the micro-seismic activity in and around the pillar. In descending order of effectiveness, the microseismic technique, vibrating wire stress measurements, and displacement measurements reflected the pillar reactions, and all showed good correlation to one another. A major rock burst in the pillar, which destroyed about 100 feet of drift above the pillar, occurred at the end of this study. This burst was preceded by a large anomaly in the microseismic activity in the failure area.

6.1 Summary This report deals with the investigation carried out to select, test, and implement a method of evaluating coal deposits and reserves. Cognizance is taken of the inherent characteristics of coal and the legislation covering aspects of health, safety, environment, and ecology applicable to the coal mining industry. Further, the method is computerized and provides information that is meaningful and readily available to other programs and sub¬systems within the concept of the Master Design Simulator. The Geology and Reserves Sub-system interface with the total system is provided by a geological data library which is structured to hold and make accessible all the data required by the system. The output from the program is accurate and useful to users with a wide variety of computer experience, knowledge, hardware and storage capacity. The sub-system is designed to function as a separate unit or an integral part of the total system and, there¬fore, an interface to or with the system has been established. Improve the effectiveness of person-wearable self-contained self rescuer (PWSCSR) training by enhancing the memory retention of trainees in proper donning procedures. Background In the fall of 1989, a total of 185 miners and inspectors were trained by Bureau of Mines personnel to don the SR-100 PWSCSR using the Bureau's 3+3 method. With the exception of a few individuals, miners were trained underground in an area set up within their working sections. The instructional protocol was as follows: (1) after placing an SR-100 simulator (equipped with a cleaned and disinfected mouthpiece assembly) on the mine floor in front of the worker, a researcher guided him or her step-by-step through the complete donning procedure, (2) the miner was required to perform each step slowly, methodically, and correctly while being talked through the sequence, (3) following this pre-practice instruction, the apparatus was repacked and the subject donned the device without coaching, while being evaluated, (4) if an error was made, the worker received corrective feedback, the unit was repacked, and the entire donning trial was redone. This procedure was repeated until the miner achieved a perfect 3+3 sequence.

The Andover-Sulphur Hill mines are 12 miles northeast of Andover and 5 miles southeast of Newton, in Sussex County, N.J. The property is situated on the Lehigh Valley and Hudson River Railroad and half a mile east of U.S. Highway 206. It is connected with the main highway by a hard-surfaced county road. (See fig. 1.) Howard J. Hewitt of Lafayette, N.J., has under lease the Sulphur Hill tract, consisting of 28 acres, and has an option on the Tar Hill tract of 106 acres. The Tar Hill property adjoins the Sulphur Hill on the northeast. (See fig. 2.) The Andover-Sulphur Hill property is owned by the Lenape Corp. of Andover, N.J., while the Tar Hill tract is owned by the Crane Iron Co. of Phillipsburg, N.J. These mines produced iron ore during a period of about 100 years but have not been operated since 1880. Zinc and lead sulfides occur mixed with iron ores in the lower workings of the old mines. A diamond-drilling program was recommended to determine the extent of the sulfide mineralization in depth and also to explore further the iron-ore deposits on the property. Australia was one of the world's principal producers of minerals and metals, and its minerals industry was a leading catalyst in promoting growth of the country. Australia was the world's largest producer of alumina, bauxite, diamond, ilmenite, monazite, opal, rutile, sapphire, and zircon. It was the premier exporter of alumina, coal, ilmenite, refined lead, monazite, rutile, and zircon, and was the second leading exporter of iron ore, after Brazil. Ranking behind China, the United States, the U.S.S.R., the German Democratic Republic, Poland, and the Federal Re-public of Germany, Australia was the seventh largest producer of coal (all grades) in the world. Australia was the fourth largest gold producer in 1988, after the Republic of South Africa, the Soviet Union, and the United States. It was the second largest producer of zinc, the third largest producer of nickel, the fourth largest producer of uranium, and the seventh largest producer of copper. 2 The country's mineral wealth was so extraordinary that it was virtually self-sufficient in most mineral commodities. Endowed with abundant resources of coal, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and uranium, Australia was one of the few market economy countries that was a net exporter of mineral fuels. About 90% of Australia's consumption of crude oil was supplied by domestic production; this was expected to decline significantly about 1990, unless significant new oilfields were discovered.

The chemical, mineralogical, and physical properties of berylliferous tuff from Spor Mountain, Utah, were determined in laboratory research conducted by the Bureau of Mines. Two beryllium-bearing minerals--a hydrated form of bertrandite and a berylliferous saponite--were found to be present in the tuff. Each of the beryllium mineral forms predominated in samples from certain areas of the district. The possibility of practicably separating the beryllium minerals from the tuff by physical methods appears remote because of the complexity and nature of the mineral associations. Beryllium mineralization in the region occurs in a rhyolitic tuff usually overlaid by unaltered rhyolite. The beryllium is distributed erratically throughout the tuff in individual mineralized bodies. Many samples of mineralized tuff were examined and found to contain from 0.2 to 1.8 percent BeO. All samples contained a hydrated form of bertrandite that was nearly cryptocrystalline, whereas samples from one area also contained a berylliferous saponite of variable beryllium content. Neither mineral has been previously reported, although related bertrandite-like minerals have been found in the U.S.S.R. and berylliferous minerals of the montmorillonite group have been synthesized. Most of the minerals of the tuff are finely crystalline, intergrown, and have similar densities. The complexity and intimacy of the mineral associations, the difficulty of achieving effective mineral liberation, and the highly friable nature are characteristics that lead to the conviction that tuff of the type examined cannot be effectively concentrated by gravity, magnetic, electrostatic, attrition, washing, sizing, or flotation methods.

A methane emission rate study was conducted in 1969 on a longwall section of a Lower Kittanning coalbed mine in central Pennsylvania. The longwall face was mined with a drum shearer between developed headings on the head end and headings on the tail end that were driven with a ripper-type continuous miner as needed. The study was conducted over 22 consecutive shifts (7-1/3 days). The average methane emission rate from the Lower Kittanning coalbed during mining at the face and developing the headings at the tail end of the face was 34 Am. Caving of the gassy overlying strata as the result of mining at the face increased the methane emission to rates ranging from 702 to 1,049 cfm.

The Alice mine is one of several zinc deposits in Ozark and Howell Counties, Missouri. It was selected as the first to be investigated by the Bureau of Mines in an effort to demonstrate reserves of sulfide ore under the shallow carbonate ores from which all production of the district had come up to World War II. The property was worked first about 1890 and was most productive prior to 1900. Its output was the bulk of the district’s total up to 1940, which is believed to have been about 85,000 tons of washed and sorted ore carrying 17 to 36 percent zinc. The firm of Doane & Ives owned and operated the Alice on a scale of a few to 25 tons a day from 1940 to 1946. An open pit about 300 feet long, 250 feet wide, and 30 to 50 feet deep comprises the mine working. Numerous old drifts and shafts in the walls and bottom of the pit are now inaccessible. The ore consists of zinc and iron minerals replacing and filling openings in dolomite. Sulfides are absent or scarce to a depth of 40 to 50 feet; smithsonite was the chief ore mineral in the oxidized zone. The individual ore bodies are irregular in size, shape, and zinc content, and “horses” of waste occur within the pit. The Bureau of Mines recommended churn drilling to test the depth, extent, and richness of the zinc sulfide ore. Four holes were drilled by a private company and seven by the Bureau in and around the pit; several penetrated considerable thicknesses of material containing a few to 10 percent (metallic) zinc in the form of sphalerite.

This report presents information on 77 waterflood projects in 31 Montana oilfields. The study shows the locations of the projects, the sources and amounts of injection water, and the results in oil produced. Waterflooding, a secondary recovery technique, began in Montana about 40 years after the initial oil discovery in 1920. Often, the difference between water disposal by injection and pressure maintenance operations is not clear. Water injected at the projects in 1973 was 157.7 million barrels. In 1973, the 31 fields having waterflood projects produced 28.3 million barrels of oil valued at $88.4 million. Both in volume and value, this represents over 80 percent of the State's 1973 oil output. The projects are making possible the recovery of additional oil, thus contributing to the conservation of oil and lessening the impact of the current oil shortage.

The Blue Metal corundum-andalusite deposit, in the Buckskin Mining district, Douglas County, Nev., was explored by the Bureau of Mines in 1945. The results of that work were presented in Report of Investigations 3895, exploration of the Blue Metal Corundum Property, Douglas County, Nev. published in August 1946. That report also describes the property in detail, giving location, ownership, history, geology, and data on beneficiation tests. Further exploration was carried on in April and Way 1947, the results of which are presented in this report. The work consisted of 175 feet of drift and crosscut, bringing the total to 398 feet of underground working, as shown in figures 1 and 2. The 23-foot drift, which was the last work of the initial project, was extended 99 feet northward along the shear zone, and three crosscuts, spaced at approximately equal intervals along the drift, were driven to country rock on the hanging and foot walls of the zone.

"The belief is now fairly general among the coal-mining people of the United States that one of the most effective methods of preventing wide-spread coalmine .explosions is that of introducing rock-dust into coal mines to reduce the inflammability or explosibility of dusts found on mine surfaces. Notwithstanding this belief it is improbable that even a small fraction of 1 per cent of the coal mines of the United States are at all adequately protected by rock-dust; in a survey made in the summer, and fall of 1927 it was found that but 463 out of more than 7,000 operating bituminous and lignitic coal mines were using rock-dust at all, and that few if any of the 463 were fully or adequately protected by rock-dusting.Inspections of a large number of mines through the United States by Bureau of Mines safety division field men have failed to reveal a single adequately rock-dusted mine, Yet there is no doubt that many of the owners and operators believed their properties to be fully protected by rock-dust against the much-feared hazard of widespread explosion. Two of the most disastrous explosions of recent years occurred at properties where the owners were definitely of the belief that the rock-dusting done had made the mines immune to widespread explosion involving coal-dust. In both instances it was found that although some rock-dusting had been done, the mines were more nearly 1 per cent than 100 per cent rock-dusted.This condition as to inefficiency or insufficiency of rock-dusting in the coal mines of the United States is almost universal, and unless our mining men awaken to its, dangers, the disaster record of the coal-mining industry is much more likely to become worse than better. During the fiscal year ended June 30, 1928, the attention of the safety division of the United States Bureau of Mines was called to. 22 explosions With 320 fatalities in bituminous coal mines of the United States; and of the 22 explosions there were 10 with 258 fatalities in mines that were listed as having used rock-dust; upon investigation it was found that as usual the rock-dusting had been anything but comprehensive or adequate. It is probable that in a very few instances last year the relatively small amount of rock-dusting stopped the .extension of the explosion and thus prevented further expansion of the death list. In general, however, the explosions occurred in a part of the mine that had not been rock-dusted - and right here is the crux of the failure or probable failure of present-day rock-dusting in the United States, There should be no part of any bituminous or coal mine in which all of the exposed surfaces (roof, ribs, and floor) have not been thoroughly rock-dusted and kept thoroughly rock-dusted. In other words, all exposed surfaces of all accessible places in bituminous and lignitic coal mines should be kept covered with rock-dust so that the combined rock-dust coal-dust mixture at all times and in all places has less than 35 or 40 per cent combustible matter, The only exception to this rule is that surfaces which are wet (and this does not mean merely damp) need not be rock-dusted. However, a mine opening may have several inches of water on the floor and yet have much explosive dust on the ribs and roof above the water; in such places the ribs and roof should be kept rock-dusted, irrespective of the wetness of the floor."
