The presence of colloidal silica negatively impacts various hydrometallurgy processes. This paper details the nature of colloidal silica, operational issues caused by colloidal silica, as well as various mitigation measures. MMG Kinsevere observed severe phase-continuity instability, increased crud formation, and reagent consumption, and reduced current efficiency in electrowinning with a deterioration in copper quality. Historical mitigation measures were initially implemented but failed to solve the problem. MMG Kinsevere successfully achieved efficient silica removal without adverse effect on the solvent extraction with the use of DEHSCOFIX® SC12 coagulant. A week into the coagulant trial, silica concentration had dropped from > 1500 mg/L to within 500 mg/L. The solventextraction plant recovered its stability and again operated at maximum capacity. Additionally, improvement was observed on current efficiency and copper cathodes quality with use of the coagulant.

The value realised by an open pit mine depends on the quality and integrity of the mine planning process as well as the level of execution against these mine plans. When managing the execution against the mine plan, how well the mine plan is executed spatially, is of critical importance. The short-term mine plan is the plan that is physically executed on most open pit mines. At the same time, the spatial mine-to-plan compliance is typically reconciled against the annual business plan. Short-term mine planning, therefore, plays an important role in the effectiveness of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process by providing operational teams with detailed designs and schedules, while ensuring that mining execution is spatially aligned with the business plan. The Sishen open pit iron ore mine (Sishen) strives to continuously improve spatial compliance to the business plan. Sishen enhanced the role that short-term mine planning plays in enabling the forward-looking component of the spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation process. The enhanced short-term mine planning process focuses on detailed tactical sequence designs per mining pushback, the health of value chain buffers, spatial plan-to-plan reconciliation, and the associated management routines. This led to improved spatial mine-to-plan compliance to the business plan from 71% to 94% over the four-year period from 2020 to 2023 inclusive. These results indicate that the application of short-term mine planning as part of an integrated spatial mine-to-plan compliance process at open pit mines can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution against the business plan. This paper presents the enhancements made to the short-term mine planning process, which other open pit mining operations can consider to improve spatial mine-to-plan compliance.

This paper demonstrates the use of Clean TeQ Water’s ATA® rapid dewatering technology as an alternative approach to the tailings paddock buttressing method which is currently being implemented. ATA® is a three-component system where the tailings stream is separated into fines and coarse fractions utilising a hydro-cyclone. The results from the pilot demonstrated that the use of ATA® offers significant advantages, including higher homogeneity in the buttress, higher permeability, and faster settling rates.

The use of stemming plugs in surface blasting is gaining popularity because of the environmental, technical, and economic advantages. Although previous studies have established the operational effectiveness of different types of stemming plugs, evaluations of the economic and ergonomic impacts are lacking, thereby hindering their application in many mining operations. Consequently, a significant proportion of mining operations end up performing less efficient blasts. We evaluated the effectiveness of three types of stemming plugs by conducting multiple full-scale production blasts. The results show that stemming plugs reduce the need for secondary blasting and increase blast performance. An economicanalysis showed that the incorporation of stemming plugs can reduce blasting costs significantly.

A sampling campaign carried out on the lead flotation circuit at Lakan lead-zinc processing plant demonstrated that the Pb recovery was only about 68-69%. Characterization of the Pb flotation tailing showed that 61.4% of the Pb is in the –37 μm size fraction, which is difficult to recover by flotation. Batch flotation experiments were carried out on a plant sample of the lead flotation feed and high-intensity conditioning (HIC) was used to improve flotation recovery. The results showed that increasing the collector conditioning time from 1 to 3 minutes significantly increases the Pb recovery from 42.5% to 57.3%. Further increases in conditioning time to 5 to 7 minutes decreased the Pb recovery. With a collector conditioning time of more than 3 minutes, due to the surface cleaning effect, increasing collector and frother dosage improved the flotation selectivity and recovery, even at higher collector dosages. The Pb recovery increased from 69.1% to 79.8% with increasing impeller speed from 600 to 1250 r/min. HIC increases the flotation kinetics and greatly improves the flotation recovery and concentrate grade.

Tin plating operations are of a complex nature due to the many operational variables that need to be controlled in order to create a product of required quality. The work in this report lays the basics for the control of a halogen plating operation based on the DuPont tinplating set-up with regard to the chemical make-up of the plating solution, as well as operational variables such as temperature and current density. To evaluate these aspects of the process, a rotating cathode Hull-cell set-up was used. This allowed for a laboratory scale plating arrangement that simulates industry closely with regard to chemical and hydro-dynamic considerations. Typical industry accepted standards were obtained for the values of operational variables and a ?baseline? test was conducted employing these standards. All subsequent tests conducted were benchmarked against this baseline result. A large suite of results was obtained in which it was found that changes could be made to the industry accepted norm which would improve on the stability of the operation and therefore the quality of the final tin-plated product. Examples of these results are: an increase in stannous tin concentration, an increase in sodium chloride concentration and a slightly elevated plating temperature. In addition, conditions were found that must be avoided to prevent instability and poor product quality.

In the extraction of base metals from printed circuit boards (PCBs) using bioleaching, the accumulation of metal ion stress in solution has been shown to inhibit the microbial regeneration of ferric iron. This poses a challenge for the development of this technology for e-waste treatment. The paper explores the application of a microbial immobilisation system in a two-stage bioleaching system consisting of a chemical leaching reactor in series with a microbial ferric iron regenerating reactor to mitigate microbial inhibition and to enhance base metal extraction. A mixed microbial culture dominated by L. ferriphilum, L. ferrooxidans and At. Caldus was maintained over a period of two months in the presence of polyurethane foam which acted as the biomass support particle. Microbial metabolic activity of immobilised cells and their tolerance to inhibitory Cu ions was investigated. Results showed that immobilised microbial cells maintained higher ferrous iron oxidation activity compared to planktonic cells in the presence of increasing Cu2+ concentrations up to 6 g/L. This presents an opportunity for microbial immobilised systems to be adopted in two-stage bioleaching system. This paper summarises a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialled at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

The transportation of men, material and rock in mechanization programmes is often neglected, or at least plays only a secondary function, as the primary focus is on proving the technology. This is despite recognition of the fact that mechanization is essential if gold mines are to remain competitive. However, the use of totally mechanized systems will require further research in the short to medium term before they become generally available. Thus, there is a real need to improve mechanized men, material and rock transportation systems as they are currently used. This applies to both reef horizons as well as to horizontal transport systems. Premier Mine is a large underground diamond mine, situated at Cullinan in the Gauteng Province of South Africa. The mine hoists over 3 millions tons of diamond bearing kimberlite per year, from a modern, mechanized panel retreat block cave mining operation. Troughs sited at the base of the cave are developed into the overlying caved ore, allowing loading access to the ore through draw points. Trough opening is therefore a vital aspect of the mining operation. Most of the production is dependent on fast, reliable and safe trough opening. Successful trough openings are achieved under difficult mining conditions due to restricted void, long up-holes and the inherent properties of kimberlite?soft, elastic rock with a high swell factor. Early in 1998, Premier Mine undertook a joint development project (with an electronic initiation system supplier) to determine whether the use of a fully programmable electronic detonator system would enhance the mining cycle in the trough opening process. Blasting commenced in February 1998, initially with blasts of a similar size and duration to those that had been previously blasted with shock-tube systems, to confirm the operational capabilities of the blasting system. The accuracy, reliability and flexibility of the electronic delay detonators (EDDs) minimized associated risks for re-engineering of the trough opening process. Further, as blast timing was optimized, larger blasts were successfully initiated. To date over 20 troughs have been opened successfully with the use of EDDs. Not only did it take less time to open troughs, but also drilling and blasting operations have been optimized, as well as an overall improvement in safety. This paper details the benefits that EDDs have delivered to Premier Mine in this area. The South African mining industry plays a significant role in the economy of the country. Nonetheless, the negative impacts on the environment continue to prevail. In regions where mining exists in proximity to communities, mining activities have led to the disruption of modality. Rural communities are mostly affected as they depend on land use for agriculture to sustain their livelihoods. The conversion of land for mining activities often leaves the communities vulnerable when mines close because of the limited life span of mines. An ongoing discourse focuses on how the mining industry can contribute to sustainable development of the communities in which they operate. Post-mining transformation offers an approach for the mining companies to contribute to sustainable livelihoods post-mine closure by strengthening rural-urban linkages, which ensures inclusive development of both rural and urban areas. The paper employs a case study approach to Richards Bay Minerals and the adjacent rural communities of Sokhulu and Mbonambi. It sets out to understand the post-mining transformation employed by RBM and explore the rural-urban linkages that manifest as a result. Findings show that sand dune rehabilitation employed by RBM is successful in restoring soil fertility and establishing the natural ecosystem. The casuarina planted to rehabilitate the dunes is used to spur an alternative charcoal industry post-closure. The main rural-urban linkages that manifest are flows of people due to job opportunities and flows of goods from the sale of charcoal produced. However, there is a lack of communication and lack of authority to ensure responsible management of the casuarina plantation and equitable sharing of benefits. The paper recommends that other post-mining transformation strategies such as eco-tourism should be explored and that the government, at both national and local level, the community and the mine should be involved to ensure overall success and sustainability of the strategy. "Recent geological exploration at Rosh Pinah mine revealed that the mine’s major production is shifting towards the western orefield, which will increase the demand for air flow to be supplied to this area. A snapshot of the ventilation survey carried out in December 2014 at the western orefield drill drive B (WOF-DDRB) showed that the air flow was well below the required standards. In order to improve the existing conditions, possible options were considered and simulated using Ventsim™ software.The best option found was to replace the existing western orefield fans with the larger fans from the inactive southern orefield workings, to increase the air flow in the DDRB district. Simulation showed that as much as 20 m3/s of air can be received at the working faces of WOF 30, compared to the previously received amount of 1.37 m3/s. The economic analysis indicated that the above option can reduce the ventilation cost by N$1.9 million annually. It was also noticed that after implementing this option together with other projects, the ventilation conditions in the mine were greatly improved and currently give no cause for concern. IntroductionA good mine ventilation system should be capable of providing adequate quantity and quality of air to all working faces, and is critical to the occupational health, safety, and comfort of underground employees (Luxbacher and Ramani, 1977; Exikis and Kapageridis, 2006). No ventilation system can remain adequate indefinitely; as the mine workings are extended, the ventilation characteristics such as system pressures, air volumes, leakages, and airway resistances change considerably. Continuous improvement of the ventilation system is needed to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations (Lovejoy, 2010). It also ensures that the right quality and quantity of air is delivered to all the necessary areas at the lowest possible cost. This can be achieved by identifying inefficient airways and poorly ventilated areas in the mine and planning how best to upgrade them.The latest geological exploration shows that the focus of production at Rosh Pinah mine is shifting towards the western orefield (WOF). As mining progressed, the working areas have advanced away from the main fans, which increased the resistance to air flow drastically and resulted in increasing demands being imposed on the main fan in order to supply an adequate air flow. This process also created more leakage paths between the fan and the working areas, which has caused the air to short-circuit before it can reach the faces. Consequently, a much larger quantity of air has to be circulated by the fan so that the stipulated quantity reaches the face, which increases operating costs (Singh et al., 2004)."

The purpose of the given research was to investigate the possibility of high-carbon ferrochromium refining to remove harmful impurities as a result of metal treatment by slag mixtures on the basis of the CaO-MgO-SiO2system. The final conclusions were drawn from experimental results. It was shown that the treatment of high-carbon ferrochromium by SiO2-MgO-CaO slag mixtures with additions of chromium sinter or iron-ore concentrate removes carbon, sulphur and phosphorus from the metal. A mechanism of phosphorus removal from a melt to a gas phase is proposed.

A modified in situ leaching method for extracting gold from oxidized gold ores using a non cyanide lixiviant is proposed. A non cyanide lixiviant is suggested because of the obvious concerns posed by injecting cyanide bearing solutions into the subsurface. Oxidized gold ores are the initial focus because earlier research on the use of sodium thiosulphate as a lixiviant under anaerobic conditions indicated that the presence of pyrite led to rapid thiosulphate breakdown. A reconnaissance research programme, involving ore characterization and hydrometallurgical testwork on samples from four Australian ore deposits and preliminary reactive transport modelling studies was carried out. This work showed that lixiviant-oxidant combinations of sodium thiosulphate and ferric EDTA, and iodide and iodine are both capable of extracting high percentages of accessible gold from the selected samples under anaerobic conditions. The ore characterization and reactive transport studies, suggested that both physical and chemical methods of permeability enhancement may be required to lift bulk permeability and the availability of gold for dissolution to sufficiently high levels to obtain adequate gold recoveries. Physical permeability enhancement could be achieved by blasting and/or hydraulic fracturing of the ore. Assuming that such methods prove to be both necessary and economically viable, the mining method would no longer be regarded as simple in situ leaching. Therefore, the term ?in place leaching? has been adopted for the proposed gold extraction system

Much has been said and written about the need to reduce South Africa's dependence on gold. To compensate for the decline in the country's foreign-exchange earnings resulting from the phasing out of gold, which must inevitably occur at some future date, a far higher priority will have to be placed on the mining, beneficiation, and export of the 59 other mineral commodities produced in South Africa. The basic strategy of the mining and metallurgical industries should be to move from the traditional approach of establishing a resource base to the establishment of a market base; to turn from production orientation to market orientation; and to rely less on exploration and economies of scale and more on process innovation and product development. The enthusiasm, entrepreneurial spirit, and commitment of the leaders in the mining and metallurgical industry will clearly be of decisive importance in the establishment of new industries for the beneficiation and export of added-value mineral-based products. The State can make a significant contribution by the provision of a welldeveloped and efficient infrastructure, including rail and harbour facilities, communications and health services, roads, and of electricity and water supplies. In our search for a new development strategy for the beneficiation and export of South Africa's minerals, we need to recognize that no one nation has all the mineralresources that it needs. Commercial and strategic manipulation of mineral supplies should no longer be tolerated. The future of the human species lies in international cooperation and in a greater understanding of the limitations of the world we live in.

This article explores the Fray Farthing Chen (FFC) Cambridge process, a novel method for the electrochemical deoxidation of metal oxides in molten salt, discovered at the University of Cambridge in 1997. The process was hailed as a highly promising, potentially low cost, novel method for the production of titanium metal direct from its oxides. The article should inform researchers in the field of some of the challenges in the commercialization of a novel, high profile process involving multiple stakeholders. The author, former senior process engineer at British Titanium Plc, the company originally tasked with commercializing titanium production via the FFC Cambridge process, reviews the latest literature and discusses past and present progress in the pursuit of low cost titanium metal via this process. This paper identifies the need for the development of specialized inverse solution techniques for the analysis of pressure transient data for the characterization of the transport and sorption properties of coal seams. Central to the proposed inverse solution technique is a specially structured artificial neural network (ANN). The most important transport and sorption characteristics of coal seams are butt and face cleat permeabilities, macropore porosity, Langmuir volume constant, Langmuir pressure constant, and sorption time constant. Conventional methods, such as type curve matching techniques and laboratory-derived measurements are handicapped in terms of being representative over the entire domain of interest. In this paper, we utilize analytical forward solution techniques for various combinations of characteristics of coal seams to generate training and testing patterns. These training patterns are shown to an ANN structured to learn the ubiquitous non-linear relationships that exist between coal seam properties, input conditions and the pressure transients measured. The trained networks are then extensively tested to ensure that they have effectively learned the training patterns. In the final stage of the development, the networks are run in the prediction mode. The responses of the networks are found to be in agreement with the input data. The developed networks are able to generate results generally within 5% error margin for permeability and porosity and 20% error margin for the sorption characteristics of coal seams. A number of examples highlighting the capabilities and degree of effectiveness of the network in characterizing the coal seams areincluded. (Visitor) The significance of ;n situ tests on large coal specimens is briefly reviewed. Tests aimed at obtaining complete stress-strain characteristics of large coal specimens with high width-to-height ratios are described. A formula for the relationship between strength and width-to-height ratios of coal pillars is proposed, and the influence of width to- height ratios on the deformation characteristics of pillars is discussed.
