Notes on the composition of pre- European copper and copper-alloy artefacts from the Transvaal by H. M. Friede. Ph.D. (Visitor) Seven copper artefacts (five ingots and two ornaments) found at prehistoric sites in the Transvaal were submitted to analysis. All the artefacts showed a high copper content and a relatively Iow level of impurities. A little-known ingot type from the Limpopo Valley ('nail' ingot) is described, and its analysis is given. The analysis of two copper ornaments that come from sites dated to the 5th Century AD. and the 11th Century AD. showed the constancy of the composition of copper articles over long periods. The well-known 'Blaauwberg Ingot' was re-analysed, and the results showed that this ingot cannot be regarded as a true bronze. Analytical values for the composition of three brass artefacts from Bambandyanalo (Mapungubwe), Northern Transvaal, are given. Some aspects of pre-European bronze manufacture and brass smelting, and of early metal trade from the East Coast into the interior of South Africa, are discussed.

Photometric sorting of ore on a South African gold mine by N. J. KEYS. B.E. Met. (Queensland) (Visitor). R. J. GORDON. (Visitor). And N. F. PEVERETT. B.Sc. (Eng.) (Wits) (Fellow) This paper concerns the development and application of a high-throughput, multi-stream photometric sorting machine developed for the South African gold mines. It is now believed that this sorter and its progeny may be found suitable for a large proportion of all possible sorting applications. A laser-light source and sensitive photomultiplier are employed in a scanning system to detect light reflected from the surfaces of rocks passing through the sorting zone. Electronic circuitry then analyses the photomultiplier signal, which represents the varying intensity of the reflected light, and produces control signals to actuate the appropriate valves of an array of air-blast rejection devices to remove from the feed certain particles selected by the analysing process. Typical throughput per machine ranges from 50 t/h for a minus 60mm plus 30mm feed to 200 t/h for minus 150mm plus 70mm material.

Owing to their excellent oxidation and corrosion resistance, Pt and its alloys are being used preferentially at elevated temperatures and in aggressive environments. For example, an important application field is the glass industry. Alongside the discovery of new potential application fields, the knowledge of material properties is essential for computer simulations, design configuration, process optimization, research and development or quality assurance purposes. Due to the importance for technical applications high-temperature properties have been investigated for currently available Pt-base alloys with ongoing improvements. For the determination of tensile creep test data up to 3000°C, including precise strain measurement, special experimental equipment has been developed at the University of Applied Sciences Jena, Germany. An overview of the existing and newly obtained mechanical property data on pure Pt, solid-solution strengthened Pt-Rh alloy, oxide dispersion-hardened materials Pt DPH and Pt 10%RhDPH as well as cutting-edge results on Pt-base superalloys hardened by intermetallic precipitates will be presented and discussed. Furthermore, some important application examples for the abovementioned Pt-materials will be given.

At ISCOR the quantitative determination of the structural properties of coke is done with a Leitz-TAS Image Analysis System. A reflected light microscopic image of a coke sample is converted into a binary image and stored in computer memory or on hard disc. By means of mathematical and stereological techniques the system can transform the images electronically. A lightpen can be used to determine the sequence of these operations. TASIC, which is based on BASIC language, is used as the program language on the computer. The majority of the programs are written by the user to ensure satisfactory results for specific studies. The computer controls the whole system, including the movement of the microscope stage, focusing, transformation and measurement of the image and data processing. The computer is also applied for establishing statistical correlations between the structural and other coke and coal parameters as well as for graphics and predictions of the coke structure. Factors affecting the structural properties of coke are discussed and conclusions are drawn.

Hydrometallurgical processing of complex ores and concentrates is becoming increasingly important as the mining and metallurgical industry seeks to exploit mineral deposits that are difficult to treat using conventional mineral processing and pyrometallurgical technologies. Mineral processing is often challenged by the difficulty or inability to separate valuable minerals into marketable concentrates. Hydrometallurgical processing, using selective leaching technology, can often ?chemically beneficiate? such difficult deposits. Pyrometallurgical treatment of base metal concentrates is capital intensive and subject to ever more stringent environmental control. Hydrometallurgical processing is generally lower in capital cost for an equivalent metal production rate and avoids the gas and dust issues associated with pyrometallurgical processing. The possibility of by-product recovery may also increase with hydrometallurgical treatment. Two examples of new technology or flowsheet development for treatment of complex ores and concentrates are used as illustration. These include the El Boleo process of Baja Mining for recovery of copper, cobalt, zinc and manganese from a complex clayey ore and the PLATSOL? process for recovery of copper, nickel, cobalt, platinum, palladium and gold from a bulk sulphide concentrate.

Creatine was used as a lixiviant for gold dissolution from gold ore. The effects of creatine concentration, temperature, leach time, and pH were examined for their influence on extent of gold dissolution. The results show that at a temperature of 75°C and pH 11.5, gold dissolution increased from 51% to 88% on increasing creatine concentration from 25 to 50 g/t. Further increase in creatine concentration showed a negative effect on the gold dissolution. Gold dissolution increased from 47% to 87% by increasing the temperature from 25°C to 55°C, and from 61% to 89% by increasing pH from 10 to 11.5. Under the optimum conditions of solids’ content of 30%, pH 11.5, creatine concentration of 100 g/t, temperature of 75°C, and hydrogen peroxide addition of 2%, about 90% of the gold could be dissolved from the ore after 24 h. A comparison between creatine and cyanide leaching showed that 90% gold dissolution was achieved at a cyanide concentration of 300 g/t, which is three times higher than the creatine concentration under optimal conditions.

The gold mining industry has mainly relied upon the use of highly polluting chemicals, such as mercury and cyanide to recover gold from its ores. The Coal Gold Agglomeration (CGA) process was developed some years ago and has the advantage in that gold is recovered by a procedure which has little or no negative impact on the environment. A gold ore containing liberated gold particles is contacted with coal-oil agglomerates, where by the gold is recovered into the coal/oil phase. Laboratory scale batch tests were performed on an artificial mixture gold slurry and gold recoveries of up to 85% were found under optimized conditions. By recycling the coal/oil phase, it was found that the gold loading onto the agglomerates was increased. Tests performed on an industrial ore yielded slightly lower gold recoveries, and X-ray Diffraction (XRD) analysis on the coal/oil phase showed that minerals other than gold was recovered into this phase. A comparative study was conducted whereby the CGA process was compared to mercury amalgamation. Gold recoveries obtained through amalgamation were 15% lower than by the agglomeration process, which indicates that this process can be considered favourably as an alternative to amalgamation.

The separation performance of a raw coal sample from South Africa based on the dense gas-solid fluidized bed beneficiation technique was investigated. Analysis showed that the raw coal sample distributes mainly in the -50+6 mm size range with the -1.6 g/cm3 density fraction accounting for 78.20% of the cumulative mass distribution. A flow sheet of the sequential coal beneficiation technique was introduced. The experimental and simulation results of the hydromechanical and density distribution stability indicate that the dense gas-solid fluidized bed could provide a stable separation environment with uniform density fluctuations under suitable operating conditions. With the application of this technique on the raw coal sample, the separation results show that three products, consisting of 73.25% clean coal with an ash content of 9.59%, 11.31% middlings, and 15.44% gangue were effectively separated at two different densities of 1.82 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3. This study provides an effective flow sheet for achieving the high-efficiency separation performance on raw coal from arid areas. The paper reports on a vacation work project conducted at Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft, Anglo Platinum, where there was a need to optimize the transport of personnel to level 15 and below. Approximately 900 men per hour need to travel between the shaft and the start of the current chairlift system. Time studies were used as the major indicator of the extent of the current problem, and it is recommended that a new chairlift system be installed to cover the distance from the vertical shaft station at level 15 to the chairlift decline station on level 15. A capital cost of approximately R10 million is necessary to carry out the proposed recommendation. Khuseleka No. 1 Shaft has the capacity to wind 1070 people per hour, and the current labour complement going to the level 15 shaft station stands at 1570 employees; thus at optimum efficiency the proposed chairlift system could transport the entire shift to the start of the current chairlift system in only 1 hour and 45 minutes. Reducing the distance walked at the start of the shift may also have an impact on productivity.

The Skorpion Zinc Project demonstrated the viability of the production of zinc from non-sulphide (commonly called ?zinc-oxide?) ores, using the leach/solvent extraction/electrowinning process route. The success of Skorpion raised the profile of a number of other zinc oxide deposits, considered to be similar. However, a study of three such deposits demonstrates that the application of whole-ore-leaching may be limited and that the concentration of zinc, or at least the separation from acid-consuming gangue minerals, prior to leaching is essential to the successful recovery of zinc from these deposits. The recovery of zinc is dependent on an understanding of the geology of the deposit, the mineralogical association of zinc minerals with gangue minerals (Boni, 2005) and limitations of mining practice. Flow sheet development and the associated metallurgical test work to derive an economically viable treatment route from two of these deposits are discussed. Key parameters affecting zinc recovery by gravity separation and flotation are presented, demonstrating that even minor differences in mineralogy have a profound impact on zinc recovery and reagent consumption. The study also deals with the determination of appropriate design parameters through metallurgical mapping of the dense media separation process.

Anisotropy is a characteristic of intact foliated metamorphic rocks (slates, gneisses, phyllites, schists). ?esting was used to establish the anisotropic behaviour of selected gneissic rocks. The effect of anisotropy on various mechanical properties (strength, deformation) and dynamic properties (wave velocity) was examined. The rock samples were also tested at successively higher confining pressures in order to evaluate the effect of anisotropic behaviour at high overburden pressures. L’ anisotropie characterise les roches foliées (schistes, gneiss, phyllades). Dans ce travail des essais en laboratoire ont été exécutés afin de déterminer le comportement anisotropique des roches gneissiques. L’ effet de l’anisotropie a été examiné par rapport aux propriétés méchaniques (résistance, deformation) et propriétés dynamiques (vélocité ultrasonique). En outre des essais des roches ont été exécutés a des compressions latérales successivement plus grandes afin de déterminer le comportement des roches sous grands charges. Anisotropie ist eine Eigenschaft der geschieferten Gesteine (TonSchiefer, Gneis, Phyllit, Marmor). Versuche wurden durchgeführt, um anisotrope Verhalten von gneis Gesteinen zu ermitteln. Der Einfluss von Anisotropie auf mechanische (Festigkeit, Dehnung) und dynamische Eigenschaften (Wellegeschwindigkeit) wurde bestimmt. Die Dreiaxialversuche wurden unter grossem allseitigen Drücken entnommen, um das anisotrope Verhalten auf grösse herrschende Spannung zu bestimmen.

An engineering house?s perspective of required inputs in designing a copper electrowinning tank house and ancillary equipment calls for both understanding of the key fundamental controlling mechanisms and the practical requirements to optimize cost, schedule and product quality. For direct or post solvent extraction copper electrowinning design, key theoretical considerations include current density and efficiency, electrolyte ion concentrations, cell voltages and electrode over potentials, physical cell dimensions, cell flow rates and electrode face velocities, and electrolyte temperature. Practical considerations for optimal project goals are location of plant, layout of tank house and ancillary equipment, elevations, type of cell furniture, required cathode quality, number and type of cells, material of construction of cells, structure and interconnecting equipment, production cycles, anode and cathode material of construction and dimensions, cathode stripping philosophy, plating aids, acid mist management, piping layouts, standard electrical equipment sizes, electrolyte filtration, impurity concentrations, bus bar and rectifier/transformer design, electrical isolation protection, crane management, sampling and quality control management, staffing skills and client expectations. All of the above are required to produce an engineered product that can be designed easily, constructed quickly and operated with flexibility.

Koffiefontein Mine commissioned a distributed antenna system as an underground communication backbone for the DISPATCH® production management system during September1999. STAS Ltd, the supplier of the Distributed Antenna System developed the System for an Integrated and Automated Mine (SIAM). This communication system, in conjunction with DISPATCH®, fulfils Koffiefontein Mine’s present and future requirements for accurate draw control, increasing productivity and improving working conditions. The DAS as SIAMnet communication network was selected by the mine, because of its superior data transmission rate of up to 1.5Mbps at 860MHz, video and Ethernet transmission facilities, and future enhancement abilities. The results of the commissioning tests confirmed the quality and integrity of the data and voice communication. The initial installation enabled 9000 metres of underground production tunnels with voice communication inclusive of 3700 metres having data communication. This article discusses the requirements and selection of the telecommunication system for an underground mine. A description of the installed distributed antenna system follows with a summary of the commissioning tests. A discussion of the reliability of the components is followed by conclusions with suitable recommendations. Keywords: distributed antenna system, underground mining, telecommunication system.

Nuclear energy - its interactions with mining and metallurgy - PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS given by J. P. Hugo Pr. Eng., B.Sc (Eng.) (Rand), Ph.D. (Sheffield) Energy is the life blood of the modern technological era in which we live and it was, I think, Benjamin Franklin who said that the manipulation of energy was the basis of all science and technology. This is perhaps an oversimplification, but there can be little doubt that our life today, and the improved standard of living we aspire to, are governed almost entirely by our ability to generate and manipulate energy. This ability has made it possible for Man - each specimen a feeble twentieth of a horsepower - to travel to the moon, to recover valuable minerals from the depths of the earth, to do arithmetic at unbelievable speed, to lessen the drudgery of manual labour. For these and virtually every aspect of our life we are dependent on energy from external sources. It is, therefore, not surprising that the per capita consumption of energy, and more particularly electricity, has become one of the most reliable criteria by which to measure the standard of living and technological advancement of a country.

The use of fill in deep-level gold mining presents the possibility of achieving considerable economic and operational benefits if conventional support can be eliminated. Unfortunately, the combination of the properties of tailings from gold reduction plants and the narrow, flat, tabular reefs being exploited make conventional hydraulic filling very unpractical. Laboratory tests indicate that, with careful control of water content, these tailings can provide an adequate fill material. A variety of bonding agents have been investigated, and the most practical seems to be ordinary Portland cement. Even at very low cement contents some cohesion is achieved. The design and layout for a complete fill support system using hydraulic transport, dewatering, and pneumatic placement are discussed, and a surface field trial indicated that the principles involved are correct and that acceptable results can be achieved. This system and material would completely eliminate conventional timber and brick support, and a preliminary economic analysis indicates that filling is cost competitive on a direct replacement basis. All the operations for a full-scale operation are available or have been developed to a stage sufficient to indicate that the system is practical, although certain operations require further refinement.

FINANCE The annual accounts, which follow this report, reflect a healthy position and show that measures taken by Council over the last few years to boost income have been successful. A higher income was needed not only to meet rising costs but also so that the services provided by the Institute for its members could be expanded. This year's income of R55 025 showed a further increase compared with last year's figure of R48 307. Income from subscriptions was higher mainly owing to an increased number of Company Affiliates, and this is indicative of the support given by mining and metallurgical companies to the good work being done by the Institute. Further sales of publications of the symposia held over the last few years again made a useful contribution to income of R4560. The first Winter School held in 1973 yielded a surplus of R7495 after the expenses had been deducted from the income received from registration fees. The cost of administering the Institute increased by R2212 compared with the previous year. Included in this was a donation of R1000 to the A.S. & T.S. Trust Fund. The cost of publishing and printing the Journal increased by R2034, but advertising and extraneous sales of the Journal were higher, with the result that the net cost of the

Early removal of the shaft reef is usually considered necessary on deep level South African gold mines to avoid damaging stress build-up associated with traditional shaft-protection pillars. In the case of the relatively shallow Beatrix Gold Mine it was largely motivated by early access to ore and the consequent earlier return on invested capital. A number of options were considered to protect the shaft from possible damaging stress changes and to minimise deformations in the shaft-reef area. Numerical modelling was used to evaluate the options and to quantify as accurately as possible the likely deformations to be accommodated by the shaft steelwork designs. The option chosen was a combination of strategically placed satellite pillars and yield pillars, and backfill. Following the mining of a small inner cut during the shaft sinking process, full-scale mining is progressing away from the shaft. Suitable instrumentation has been installed to monitor deformations associated with the shaft reef removal. L’option choisie fut une combinaison de piliers satellites placés à des points stratégiques avec des piliers de protection, et terre de remblayage. Pendant le fonçage de puits une petite coupure intérieure fut exploitée, et maintenant l’exploitation à grande échelle, au-delà du puits, est en cours. Les instruments nécessaires ont été installés pour surveiller les déformations associées à l’enlèvement du filon du puits. Die frühe Entfernung des Riffschachtes wird normalerweise bei südafrikanischen Tiefbaugoldmienen als notwendig erachtet um den zerstörende Druckaufbau zu vermeiden, welcher mit traditionellen Schachtschutzpfeilern verbunden ist. Im Fall der verhältnismäßig flachen Beatrix Goldmine war es hauptsächlich vom frühen Zugang zum Erz und dem konsequenten frühen Rückfluß des investierten Kapitals motiviert. Eine Anzahl an Optionen wurde erachtet um den Schacht vor möglichen zerstörenden Druckänderungen zu schützen und Deformationen im Riffschachtbereich zu minimieren. Um die Optionen zu bewerten und mögliche Deformationen so genau wie nur möglich quantitativ darzustellen die von den Schachtstahlkonstruktionen aufgenommen werden müssen, wurden numerische Modelle verwendet. Die gewählte Option war eine Kombination aus strategisch plazierten exzentrischen Pfeilern und Schutzpfeilern sowie Hinterfüllungen. Nach dem Vortrieb eines kleinen inneren Einbruches während des Abteufens wird der Vollvortrieb vom Schacht weg vorgenommen. Um die Deformationen, die mit der Riffschachtentfernung verbunden sind zu überwachen, müssen geeignete Instrumentenausrüstungen installiert werden.
