Most copper/cobalt ores from the Central African Copperbelt contain sulphidic compounds, which are not extractable in direct leaching. Roasting provides the possibility to transfer the valuable components into leachable compounds. In an operation window defined by temperature and off-gas composition it is possible to selectively oxidize iron sulphides to haematite and copper/cobalt sulphides to sulphates. Selective sulphating of the valuable minerals is an important condition for the subsequent leaching stage. The dissolved copper and cobalt are recovered by solvent extraction and electrowinning. This technology has been part of an established process for many decades. The concentrates from recent projects on the Copperbelt have lower sulphur contents, and frequently higher copper contents, than those from older projects. The paper shows the consequences of this trend for plant operation and explains useful counter actions by means of case studies. Autothermal combustion is ensured even at very low sulphur contents. Off-gas treatment has so far been based on SO2 removal through sulphuric acid production. The generated acid is used to make up acid losses in the hydrometallurgical plant section. This well-proven process combination is still the preferred route if the feed sulphur content is high enough; however, some cases may require different off-gas cleaning concepts without compromising on clean air quality. Roasting in a fluid-bed furnace remains the core of the technology. Fluid-bed roasters are easy to operate and provide an excellent control of the calcine quality. Different feeding and heat-recovery systems are used to provide a tailor-made solution for each project. Outotec built it first sulphatizing roaster in Zambia about 30 years ago. At that time, the roasting of metal sulphides was already one of the main technologies in the company. Outotec has developed roasting solutions for copper, gold, zinc, lead, molybdenum, and pyrite ores. The continuously expanded and upgraded research facilities provide an excellent basis for developing sustainable, energy-efficient, and economic solutions for copper and cobalt production in Africa.

The Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL) of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) recently conducted full-scale explosion experiments; these experiments evaluated the strength characteristics of various seal designs used for safely isolating worked-out areas in underground coal mines. Large-scale explosion tests were conducted within the multiple entry section of PRL's Lake Lynn Experimental Mine (LLEM) employing the only currently accepted test method endorsed by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) for seal design in American mines. These explosion tests are labor-intensive, expensive to conduct, and can interfere with other critical underground safety and health research programs conducted by NIOSH. Therefore, the PRL has developed an alternative seal evaluation method, based on a hydrostatic pressure loading concept, that can facilitate the in-situ testing of seals in an operating mine. Two chambers within LLEM and one within the Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) were used for hydrostatic pressure loading various seal designs. The results from tests in these chambers compare favorably with those from the large-scale explosion tests in the multiple entries. Preliminary size-scaling relationships for predicting the strength of standard seal designs as a function of entry size is also presented. In addition to testing seal designs at the required 20 psi static pressure level, the new facilities also allow for the determination of the seal's ultimate failure pressure. This new approach shows promise as an alternative evaluation method for improving mine sealing technologies which, in turn, will enhance the safety of the underground personnel.

The objective of this work is to quantify the effect of the rock mass surrounding a stope or a tunnel on the seismic signal so that the rockburst damage on the excavation can be derived. It has been shown that the transfer function of rock mass surrounding an excavation can be modelled using a damped oscillator. The method of estimating the transfer function is extended in this paper. The parameters of a damped oscillator are estimated using inversion techniques and the transfer function is modelled as a time-varying system. The technique is tested on data acquired at three different sites in two deep gold mines. Employment of a modal model of the transfer function was suitable in two cases. Application of this technique is essential to track the time variation of the natural frequency during ground motion caused by a seismic event.

Since 1995, when "freeze lining" refractory systems were introduced to the ferroalloy industry, they have gained in popularity, due to the freeze lining?s reputation for reliability, safety, and the contribution it makes to profitability. As with many popular and effective technologies, however, the freeze lining has spawned low-cost pretenders that claim the "freeze lining" name. On the surface they appear to contain some of the components of the technology, such as thermally conductive materials, but they fail to incorporate all of the principles that define a true Freeze Lining. The term "freeze lining" refers to the refractory system?s ability to maintain a temperature profile that is low enough to freeze a layer of process material on its hot face, which insulates the refractory and prevents direct contact with molten metal and slag. In doing so, the common wear mechanisms found in the submerged arc furnace - chemical attack, erosion, and thermal stress - can be prevented. These wear mechanisms are all related to high temperature; thus, they are prevented by maintaining low temperatures. Certain refractory properties and design concepts are absolutely necessary for the lining system to function as a true Freeze Lining. The paper explains these requirements and why they are important - the Truth of freeze linings - and further explains why systems that ignore one or more of these requirements cannot claim to be freeze linings, thereby exposing the Myths.

Small scale mining (SSM) has been going on for a long time in Ghana. SSM was legalized by the PNDC Law 218, 1989. Since then there have been numerous gains from the SSM industry. The SSM is organized locally by the concession owner who engages people to work for the gold which he buys. Small scale miners (SSMs) use crudely made sluices in Ghana and, therefore, their production falls below what is expected. The SSMs work in groups and not as cooperatives, as they do in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Legalization of SSM has curbed gold smuggling considerably because a gold marketing entity is available. SSM poses certain environmental problems like pollution of water bodies and soils by mercury and indiscriminate digging of pits.

The rate of dissolution of sulphide minerals is frequently interpreted in terms of the passivating behaviour of a layer of material on the surface. This interpretation has driven research to identify and possibly remove this layer from the surface, and thus yield higher rates of dissolution. The identification of such layers has proved difficult, with different researchers claiming different compositions for possible layers. An alternative framework has been pursued by the author and co-workers, who have argued that the rate of dissolution is governed by the electronic structure of the minerals which give rise to their semiconducting properties. Researchers sceptical of this approach have argued that semiconducting properties are only important in highly pure substances. In this paper, we review the electronic and semiconducting properties and discuss how they impact dissolution behaviour. The flotation response of a Pb-Zn sulphide ore from the Rosh Pinah Mine (Namibia) was studied in the presence of inorganic depressants such as sodium cyanide and zinc sulphate. Poor flotation selective was observed in the rougher concentrate of the galena circuit despite the use of excessive amount of sodium cyanide. Batch flotation tests have shown that the use of cyanide alone is not efficient for the depression of sphalerite from the Rosh Pinah ore when milling is carried out according to the current plant particle size distribution. The use of both cyanide and zinc sulphate improved the selectivity between galena and sphalerite much better than cyanide alone. Flotation selectivity is limited by the mineralogical texture of the Rosh Pinah ore sample. Microscopic analysis has shown that the presence of sphalerite in the galena concentrate is also due to poor liberation between galena and sphalerite, especially in the middlings. Hence selectivity could be improved by regrinding the rougher concentrate prior to the cleaning stage. Keywords- Sulphide ores, Flotation, Flotation depressant, Mineralogy.

The widely employed IPCC models for the release of methane from underground coalmining operations are reviewed, and put in the context of the South African National Communication on greenhouse gas emissions. Then attempts to calibrate the model via measurements on South African coalmines are described. These attempts failed because it rapidly became clear that the IPCC model, involving methane adsorbed by the coal and released (a) by the depressurization of the strata caused by mining, (b) from the broken coal and (c) from coal remaining in roof, floor, pillars or goaf after mining, was not valid. Instead, measurements showed that the methane release was very variable, sporadically falling to zero. Carbon dioxide concentrations were monitored at the same time as methane, and followed methane concentrations. An alternative model was developed, in which methane was largely displaced from the coal and held in fissures, cleats and pores, which, when intersected by mining, released methane into the ventilation stream. In a key test of this hypothesis, methane concentrations around a continuous miner were monitored both during operation and after shutdown. Even during operation, methane became undetectable. It is hypothesized that heating of the South African coal-seams during the emplacement of the igneous dykes that cut so many of the seams caused displacement of the methane from the coal into the pores. This fissure-held methane, or free methane, is released rapidly once a pathway through the coal into the mine atmosphere is established. In contrast, methane adsorbed in the coal, and measured as the seam gas, desorbs relatively slowly. Measurements suggest that on average about 50%of the adsorbed methane is lost one day after mining. By that time, the coal will have left the mine, so that the remaining seam gas will be released to the atmosphere outside the mine. Attempts to measure methane emissions from surface coal-mining operations showed very little detectable methane. Coal from surface operations, which was milled and exposed to atmosphere, adsorbed gas from the air. It is concluded that methane release from surface operations is probably less than 3Gg/a. It is estimated that the total methane release from the coalmining industry amounts to about 72 Gg/a, as opposed to the National Communication estimates of 323 Gg/a in 1990 and 317 Gg/a in 1994. However, there are large errors associated with these estimates, and it is recommended that the methodology outlined in this report be extended to as many mines as possible to reduce the errors that are inherent in the physical processes underlying the release of methane from South African coalmines.

Information on the estimation of the size of mills to deliver specified amounts of comminution energy, and amount of expected ball, rod, and liner wear to allow cost estimates for new projects, is also included.

Excessive build-up of methane and water pressures was identified as the leading cause of some Q/the roof falls in a coal mine in the eastern Transvaal. In order to characterize the migration of the methane and water into and around the mined coal seam, a laboratory investigation of the permeability of the roof strata was undertaken. The aim of the investigation was to correlate changes in the fades with changes in permeability to enable the prediction of possible zones of pressure buildup. The tests were carried out on samples from borehole core that had been obtained from the roof strata as part of the mine exploration programme. Permeability measurements were then conducted under atmospheric and triaxial-stress conditions. For the tests under atmospheric conditions, a modified Ohle cell was used and, for the tests under triaxial-stress conditions, a modified Hoek cell was used. The liquid equivalent permeability?s of the different samples were obtained by use of ASTM D4525- 85, and these were then used as a basis for comparison. Facies type, i.e. grain size, was found to have an influence on the permeability but, owing to the variable nature of the sediments, a range of permeability rather than a specific permeability value was associated with each type of Jades. The measured permeability was bound to decrease with an increase in gas pressure. The liquid equivalent permeability was bound to increase with an increase in grain size for the coarser-grained Jades, and to decrease with an increase in grain size for the finer-grained types. The application of an external stress regime to the sample was bound to reduce the permeability, but the amount of the reduction depended on the type of stress. The permeability was also found to depend on the recent stress history of the sample. The authors conclude that the methods described are useful for the correlation of facies type with permeability, but that the results are sensitive to changes in locality.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree This work was done to characterize the leaching of a uranium containing pulp processed by a South African producer to identify parameters that could be adjusted to increase the extraction of uranium in the existing circuit. Batch leach tests were used to characterize the leach properties and especially the influence of the oxidant concentration on the leaching achieved. It was found that relatively high extraction could be obtained even at room temperature by using a high liquid-to-solids ratio and that increasing the oxidant concentration significantly improved the leaching of the uranium minerals.

"Owing to the corrosiveness of the untreated brackish cooling water typically used for steel mills (and other environments), it is important to treat the water and monitor corrosion in such systems. Generally, corrosion rates are monitored with corrosion probes inserted into a pipeline or vessel. This has been standard practice for many years, and is widely accepted in industry. Typically, two kinds of probes are used - electrical resistance and linear polarization resistance (LPR) probes.In this study, the effectiveness and accuracy of the LPR technique was evaluated by comparing the electrochemical measurements with the results of mass loss tests using corrosion coupons. The corrosivity of the environment, a synthetic brackish water, was varied by varying the calcium hardness and alkalinity, and to simulate actual plant conditions temperatures of 35°C and 45°C were used. In addition to the corrosion rate measurements, the iron concentration was measured, as well as the imbalance from the probe.The corrosion rates obtained by LPR were from 57% lower to 385%higher than those from the immersion tests. Most probe measurements were higher than the immersion results, and 50% of the probe results were50% or more higher than the immersion results. The best correspondence between the two methods was obtained at low calcium levels, except for one measurement that was 93% higher than the coupon results. There was no clear correlation between parameters such as temperature and total alkalinity and the difference between the results. It would therefore appear that LPR measurements can differ significantly from immersion results, and LPR results should therefore be used with caution in industrial applications."

Uranium in the tetravalent state has very low solubility in acid and alkaline solutions and needs to be oxidized to the hexavalent state to become soluble. In acid leaching of uranium the uranium is oxidized by ferric iron, which in turn is reduced to ferrous iron. The reduced iron needs to be oxidized to the ferric form to allow the uranium dissolution reaction to proceed. This paper considers the known and proven oxidants used in acid leaching of uranium. These include manganese dioxide, sodium chlorate, hydrogen peroxide, ferric iron, oxygen and sulphur dioxide/air (oxygen). The reaction chemistry of each oxidant as well as the practical applications are considered and discussed. All the oxidants discussed work adequately in acid leaching of uranium and it is possible to engineer solutions for the use of the oxidants in acid leaching on plant scale. The availability and supply of the oxidant as well as the cost and environmental impact of the oxidant plays a major role in the selection of a suitable oxidant. The location of the plant will also have an impact on these issues.

The occurrence of heavy minerals in the oil sands of Alberta has long been known and has been well documented in the literature. Unfortunately most of the researchers working on this resource have been unable to produce products that meet acceptable market specifications. This has resulted in many misconceptions about this resource. Recent efforts have shown that with some innovative approaches, marketable material can be produced and as a result it might finally be possible to realize the potential of this immense resource that, some have estimated, could contain in excess of 20% of the world demand by 2010. This paper highlights the uniqueness of this mineral assemblage and the mineral processing challenges it presents. It shows the most recent work that has resulted in the production of marketable titanium and zircon products. This paper also focuses on some of the special problems resulting from the variability in the heavy mineral suite. Of special interest is the occurrence and removal of bitumen and pyrite without adding to the sulphur dioxide loading in the regional airshed. The trend by the mining industry to develop various positions on ‘sustainable mining’ has some significance for the heavy mineral industry. Although the industry generally has an excellent track record of eventually rehabilitating disturbed ground in an acceptable manner, heavy mineral mining operations tend to have a relatively large footprint of disturbance and the industry is under considerable pressure to develop options that are more environmentally acceptable. In addition, as operators move to exploit deposits that are lower grade and/or are further from a port site, the emissions per unit of sold product will also rise and the industry will be under pressure to address this issue as well. Because heavy minerals from oil sands are by-products of existing operations, there are virtually no incremental disturbances or emissions that would be associated with heavy mineral production. All mining and tailings remediation issues are accounted for by the oil sand operation. The only incremental emissions would be those associated with the mineral processing operations and transport of finished products to a port site. This paper discusses the environmental and cost implications of this situation.

Mineral resource evaluation requires defining geological domains that differentiate the types of mineralogy, alteration and lithology. Usual practice is to consider the domain boundaries as hard, i.e. data from across the boundaries are disregarded when estimating the grades within a given domain. This practice may hinder the quality of the estimates when a significant spatial correlation of the grades exists across the domain boundaries. In this paper, several geostatistical methodologies to handle soft geological boundaries are compared through a case study on a copper mine in Chile. The estimation methods considered are: ordinary kriging using hard boundaries between geological domains; ordinary kriging omitting the geological boundaries; traditional and standardized ordinary cokriging of the grades assayed in different domains; ordinary kriging within dilated geological domains, that is, incorporating samples from adjacent domains up to a given radius from the boundary of the domain being considered. The estimations are performed using a set of exploration data (drill hole samples) and are validated using a set of production data (blast hole samples collected for grade control). Results indicate that kriging with dilated domains performs better than ordinary kriging using hard boundaries or no boundaries and better than the ordinary cokriging approaches. It therefore appears as a simple alternative to global kriging (without considering the geological domains) and allows accounting for changes in the grade average, dispersion and spatial continuity with the geological characteristics of the deposit, via the use of grade variograms proper to each geological domain. The maximal distance for searching samples from adjacent domains should be chosen according to the spatial correlation of the grades across the domain boundaries, or via a cross-validation at an early stage of the mine or a jack-knife if production data are available. Testwork at Goedehoop Colliery showed that fine coal, essentially?150 microns can be successfully beneficiated using froth flotation. Both conventional and column flotation were tested. It was found that the traditional stirred tank type of flotation machines used in conventional flotation produced the best recovery of fine coal. After extensive testwork it was decided to develop a flotation machine on Goedehoop Colliery that would combine stirred tank and quiescent column technology. It was thought that this design would give the best combination of recovery and selectivity. The Multicell was developed and is producing results acceptable for Witbank coal flotation. This paper traces the rise of South Africa's mining industry in the context of the different state forms that oversaw its development. It commences with the mining-led industrial revolution through four periods of conflict, each of which contributed to a deepening of the industrial base, with constant battles between domestic and foreign capital and labour, and the rise of both Afrikaner and African nationalism. The role of state-owned enterprises has been crucial in shaping this dynamic so that at its peak the public sector and leading mining houses constituted two massive centres of power. This was followed by a thirty-year period of neo-liberal experimentation. The current debate on the 'developmental state' is an attempt to reconstruct the state as a counterweight to capital. It is argued that while the country has moved toward inclusive political and economic institutions, these are both limited by deep 'extractive' characteristics. This transformation failure provides a fertile ground for populism that presents one of the biggest threats to inclusive growth. Cited examples point to the many ways that states have sought to deal with the bonanza that conversion of mineral non-resources into resources brings. Such greenfield resources on state land, or in areas where the state holds monopoly rights, do not present ownership issues. It is suggested that this is the route that South Africa should follow, as the alternative will be conflictual.

The definition of mineral rents has historically been somewhat unclear, but a growing understanding of the source and composition of the revenues that comprise these rents mean that they can be more easily identified and quantified. Furthermore the way in which the flow of the rents from mineral developments are captured and then distributed has been a point of contention amongst the various stakeholders. Investors, the host government, the resource owners, environmental interests, indigenous groups and land owners are identified in this paper as the principal participants in mineral development and while each is entitled to a portion of the rent, the size of their portions will differ. A competitive rent-sharing model for southern African countries has been established and indicates how the range of stakeholders could be rewarded for their contribution. Acceptance of the sharing ratios amongst the recipients is a function of their understanding of the size of the rent and their position in the hierarchy of stakeholders. At first glance investors appear to receive the largest share of the rent, but they disburse some of the rent to hidden costs, which when all is said and done, means that investors and host governments retain approximately equal shares of the mineral rent. Both the investor and government are faced with the dilemma of how to equitably distribute the rents they have captured to minority stakeholders. Government captures corporate tax, mineral royalties and a wide range of subordinate taxes, but is required to construct policies that will ensure distributional equity among the various levels of government as well as among the provinces that comprise the country. Investors will have to ensure that a portion of the rents they capture are diverted to other stakeholders namely resource owners, environmental interests, indigenous peoples groups and the landowners. This paper identifies the major recipients of rent and provides some indication of equitable distribution ratios for mineral wealth among them?a first step in ensuring that mineral development is compatible with long-term sustainable development and in the best national interests.

Abosso Goldfields Limited (AGL) is in the process of developing an expansion of their Damang Open Pit gold mine in Ghana. AGL acquired the Damang mine in January 2002, with SRK participating in the geotechnical investigation and design for the project since 2001. A deep resource drilling program, completed during 2004, intersected an extension of the orebody below the then planned final pit floor. A feasibility study has been completed to determine the economic extraction of this deep ore with an expanded pit shell. The Damang mine is in a stockwork sulphide deposit at the culmination of the Damang anticline. The deposit occurs as hydrothermal mineralisation associated with dominantly east dipping thrusts and sub-horizontal quartz veins. Primary gold mineralisation also occurs in the conglomerates of the Tarkwaian Formation. The geological units consist of steep easterly dipping dolerite, sandstone, siltstone and phyllite beds, with the weathering profile comprising saprolites overlying a relatively thin joint oxidized horizon. It is planned to deepen the current open pit to a final depth of up to 270 m, primarily by the development of a push-back of the eastern and western walls. The edge of the Eastern Tailings Storage Facility (ETSF) is currently located within 80 to 100 m of the crest of the existing pit. The geotechnical design focused on the optimization of the bench face angle and finally recommended a ?Steep Slope Strategy?, involving 24m high near vertical benches. Limiting bench stack heights of 96m at a maximum of 66° were derived from the influence of major structures and the variation in rock mass conditions. The overall slope angles in each pit sector were developed around the requirement for haulage ramps. One of the main design challenges was to optimise the standoff distance between the final pit crest and the ETSF. This process had to consider maximum access to the resource without undue influence on or from the nearby tailings dam. A planned increase to the height of the dam wall was an additional factor in the design. Dewatering of the pit walls was also a major consideration in this tropical environment.
