"A complementary ion exchange/solvent extraction process for the recovery of copper from low-grade ores developed by Iontech Engineering Ltd. is described. It has successfully been implemented on a full-scale plant level at the Buchim Copper Mine in Macedonia, yielding a maximum copper cathode production of 2400 tonnes per year. Technical and economic aspects of three years of operational experience are comprehensively compared with the Asarel Medet copper plant in Bulgaria, which is utilizing conventional solvent extraction in the enrichment/purification step. INTRODUCTION The concentration and separation of copper from primary leachates is one of the key operations in the hydrometallurgical processing of oxide ores (Langner, 2011). Conventionally, this basic operation is conducted by submitting the pregnant leach solution (PLS), with a 1–5 g/L Cu content, from the initial sulfuric acid leach to a solvent-extraction (SX) process in which copper reports to the organic phase (see Figure 1). After phase separation, the metal is stripped from the extractant/diluent mixture employing sulfuric acid to furnish a concentrated metal solution, usually containing 40–50 g Cu/L. The final products of the overall process are copper cathodes, which are obtained from a terminal electrowinning step.Although considered as “technology of choice”, SX to date is still suffering from several drawbacks, such as the risk of poor phase disengagement and the high capital costs of solvent-extraction plants. Especially, the processing of leachates with lower copper tenors (< 1 g/L) is often economically less attractive. As a result, tremendous efforts have been dedicated to the evaluation of alternative technologies to address these challenges."

The paper discusses the claim that the remains of mines in Southern Africa date from ancient times, rather than from a more modern period. The evidence indicates that these mines were excavated by Iron Age Black people, who moved into South Africa from about A.D. 100 onwards. Details are given of the finds made in 1981 in an investigation of the remains of copper mines in the Dwarsberg, which probably date from the nineteenth century.

In many mineral processing operations, the reported production figures for an accounting period may not make the best use of available data. While most of the mathematical approaches, such as check-in/check-out, mass balancing, used in effective metallurgical accounting strategies are well understood, the sources and magnitude of measurement errors generally are not. As part of the &apos;AMIRA P754-Metal Accounting and Reconciliation&apos; project, a study was undertaken at the Northparkes copper/gold concentrator near Parkes, New South Wales to examine the data used in their concentrator metallurgical accounting system. This paper summarises the results of a detailed examination of the mass measurement systems around the concentrator as well as the primary sampling system used for grade estimation. The goal of this work was to develop practical techniques to quantify the error (ie both accuracy and precision) of the measured metal accounting information. With this information, statistical confidence levels for this data can then be calculated. If the errors are small, the effect of error in each piece of measured data can then be propagated to other calculated production figures such as recovery and feed grade using a statistical technique called `the propagation of error&apos;.

Computer analysis, modelling and optimization of gold recovery plants of the Anglo American Group by M. I. BRITTAN M.Sc. (Eng.), M.S., Ph. D., (Member). and E. J. J. van VUUREN M.Sc., (Visitor). Multiple correlation and regression techniques are used to analyse gold plant operating records. Key variables m the process which Influence the gold recovery are Identified and assembled into a mathematical model. This constitutes a valuable tool for the optimisation of variables such as the rates of reagent addition and for assessing the economics of extending the plant. Substantial short term economic benefits have been realized. The techniques provide a rapid diagnostic service without interfering with normal plant operation. Quantitative results are presented and their implications examined. The value of the method is discussed.

The production of ferrochrome alloy from chromium bearing chromite ores is conducted at high temperature under highly reducing conditions. However, albeit completely unintended, it is impossible to completely exclude oxygen from all high temperature process steps, with the corresponding possibility arising for the generation of small amounts of Cr(VI) species. Certain Cr(VI) species are regarded as a carcinogenic, with specifically airborne exposure to these Cr(VI) species being associated with cancer of the respiratory system. With approximately three-quarters of the world?s viable chromite ore reserves located in South Africa, and annual ferrochrome production approaching almost half of total annual global output, aspects of Cr(VI) generation and control are of particular relevance and importance to the local industry, and naturally to the global industry at large. This paper seeks to examine theoretical and practical aspects associated with Cr(VI)generation (based largely on experience within the local South African industry, but considered to be generally encountered in the broader global industry context), together with mitigating measures that can be applied within the context of the production processes. From the discussions it is clear that significant improvements in various Cr(VI)-related aspects have been made by the South African ferrochrome industry. However, it is also evident that several areas of uncertainty still exist, which require further research in order to better quantify risks and enhance the efficacy of mitigating steps. In a former Spotlight articlet, Dr P. J. D. Lloyd focused attention on the shortage of locally trained mining and metallurgical graduates, and indicated that the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM) has been exerting pressure to boost the intake of undergraduates in mineral disciplines. This article reviews the recruiting activities of the South African minerals industry over the past decade, and discusses some of the programmes that are in operation at the moment, particularly those aimed at potential graduates.

There is a set of settled ideas in the field of the mechanics of rock mass joints, that need a deep revision, after the last experimental works of several authors. In this paper, this theme is approached under several viewpoints, like the following ones: the essential influence of the mating or mismatching of rock joints on their strength (different strength models are applicable to these two situations, one leading preferably to normal scale effects, and the other to inverse scale effects); Patton&apos;s model is a bad formulation of the joint strength, whenever there is a dilation effect in the slidings (actually, the essential consideration of the amplitude of the roughess isn&apos;t made by any limit equilibrium model, like Patton&apos;s model); the joint strength increases as the width perpendicular to the sliding direction is reduced (previous works of other authors suggested the independence of the strength on that width); the reduction of the anisotropy of the roughness, as the sample symmetry and sample dimensions increase; there is no scale effect in the discontinuity mechanics, if there is no roughness heterogeneity; when only the same roughness and undulation orders are involved in the tests, shorter samples have larger peak displacements and lower shear stiffnesses than larger samples (usually, the contrary is admitted). For all these reasons, there isn&apos;t an easy correlation between the small scale tests and the natural large joint scale. Only "in situ" large scale tests have some representativeness. All the above mentioned questions are correlated to each other. Es gibt eine Menge eingewurzelter Ideen im Gebiet der Mechanik von Felsklüften, die, nach den letzten experimentellen Arbeiten von mehreren Verfassern, eine tiefe Überprüfung benötigen. The drive to reduce water usage globally has led to the mining industry reassessing its water usage - owing to past environmental degradation due to effluent discharge, tailings disposal and process water seepage into the water-table (Haggard et al., 2015). Factors such as water scarcity and environmental restrictions have created the necessity for recycling of process water in mining and other industries. Water recycling, however, causes an accumulation of ions in the process water, which may affect the strength of reagent action on the target mineral and in turn critical aspects of flotation may be impacted. Prior studies have shown that certain ions have specific effects on flotation: for example, calcium and copper have been found to enhance the adsorption of depressant onto gangue (Feng et al., 2013, Wang et al., 2016). Calcium and sulfate ions have been seen to give a higher concentrate grade than other ions present in process water (Manono et al., 2012). An increase in ion concentration will increase the mineral grade due to a decrease in entrainment (Corin et al., 2011). An experimental study of iron-smelting techniques used in the South African Iron Age by H. M. FRIEDE, Ph.D. and R. H. STEEL (Visitors) The main factors involved in the primitive smelting of iron (ore, charcoal, temperature, air supply, process control) were evaluated in an experimental furnace that was constructed to the pattern of an Iron Age furnace found at Melville Koppies Nature Reserve, Johannesburg. In particular, the characteristics, action, and efficiency of skin bellows were investigated to gaina better understanding of the air-supply system used. Sixteen specimens of iron ore, slag, and metallic iron (excavated material and material produced in the experimental furnace) were submitted to analysis. The results of the analyses are reported and discussed.

The results of a series of measurements of accelerations and guide-roller loads made on mineshaft conveyances are given, together with the predictions of these accelerations and loads based on a computer programme. The analysis of the measurements is described, and the results of the measurements and computer predictions when compared show reasonable agreement. Some parameters that increase the guide-roller loads are identified, and their effects are studied, together with some comments on the total loads. Finally, a possible format for a design specification is discussed, and some tentative design values are given.

The South African based platinum mines produce the world?s majority of platinum metal that is used in autocatalysts and jewellery. As the platinum market is forecast to grow at healthy rates into the future, the South African producers, Anglo Platinum, Impala, Lonmin and Northam are planning to expand in the next decade. Furthermore a number of smaller producers who are accessing other mineral rights are entering the buoyant market. The South African platinum mines have traditionally exploited the Merensky reef of the Bushveld Igneous Complex (BIC); however, the mining of this reef is reaching depths that require significant vertical shaft systems and costly refrigeration for access to the ore bodies at deeper levels. In the past decade all of the producers have begun to mine the less attractive UG2 reef because of its cheaper mining costs. This UG2 reef contains significant quantities of chromite with typically a chrome-to-iron (Cr/Fe) ratio of 1.35. UG2 ores can contain between 10 and 25% Cr2O3 depending upon the reef width and the selected mining method. It is relatively cheap and easy to extract a portion of the chromite from a platinum concentrator tailings stream at a grade of between 40-42% Cr2O3. However it is only in recent years that some ferrochrome producers have begun to source some of their chromite from the tailings of platinum producers. South Africa is also the world?s largest single producer of ferrochrome and supplies much of the world?s stainless steel producers and thus the growing market for their product. As the traditional sources of high Cr/Fe ratio ores have been depleted at the shallow economic depths and thus have become more expensive sources of chromite, technical developments have improved the ability to use fine chromite economically to make acceptable grades of ferrochrome. Thus UG2 fines are now becoming possible cheap sources of acceptable feed to the ferrochrome industry. The abundance of feedstock for ferrochrome production and the lessening dependence on mined material will impact upon the structure of the ferrochrome business in South Africa. With continued platinum mining from UG2 reefs, South Africa is set to remain highly competitive in the world?s ferrochrome/stainless steel industry.

Groups of up to twelve new recruits to the industry were subjected to climatic room acclimatization for either five, seven, eight or nine days prior to being tested for the degree to which they had been acclimatized. These tests were done at 32,2 0C (wet bulb) at a wind velocity of about 0,4 m/sec and the men worked for four hours at a rate of 215,6 kg m/min on one day and at a rate of 431,2 kg m/min on the second day. The results indicated that there is no significant difference between the degrees of acclimatization obtained by the eight- and nineday procedures which confirms the conculsions drawn in a previous report1. The eight-day procedure can thus be claimed to be perfectly adequate and safe. Decreasing the period of exposure to five or seven days would however, not be justified because of the significant differences in physiological responses that were observed on both test days between men acclimatized for these periods and those acclimatized for nine days. It is concluded that it would be unsafe to employ these shorter periods of acclimatization when underground environmental temperatures at which the men are to work, exceed 31 0C (wet bulb).

The problem of direct-current plasma arc behaviour, interaction, and dynamics is considered in the context of metallurgical DC arc furnace applications. Particular attention is paid to the transient flow behaviour of arc systems. A mathematical formulation of the physics used to describe the arc system is presented, and includes the spatial and temporal evolution of fluid flow, heat transfer, and electromagnetism. Based on this formulation, a numerical model is developed using a finite difference approach on a regular cartesian grid in both two and three dimensions, with a special focus on robust stability, high resolution modelling, and high performance. A collection of results produced using the numerical model to study pilot plant-scale furnaces is then presented. These address a range of process and design variables and their effect on the numerical model?s results. Where possible, the qualitative behaviour of the model is compared to available experimental data. A number of novel effects and phenomena are seen in the dynamic behaviour of the DC plasma arc model for both single and multiple arc systems, which may lead to improved understanding, control, and manipulation of such systems where they occur in industrial applications. The South African base metals industry has been one mainly focused on the production of metals or metal compounds from primary ores. This is true for metals such as titanium, vanadium, chrome, manganese, cobalt, nickel, copper, zinc and aluminium. The steel making industry has traditionally used a substantial portion of scrap steel, and could thus be considered to be somewhat of an exception. Secondary sources have played much less of a role, possibly due to at least some of the following factors. Scrap material is often of unknown composition, and thus it requires additional chemical analysis, and possibly special treatment. Tonnages are relatively small, and the incorporation of secondary materials is possibly seen to carry undue risk and inadequate benefit. South African consumers are still not very conservation and recycling conscious, which limits the amount of scrap made available. This attitude might also be expected to influence decision makers in these industries. Finally, pressure from environmentally motivated activists locally has not been unduly large. This landscape has been changing, and is continuing to do so. Various municipal authorities such as those of Pretoria, Johannesburg and Cape Town are reporting increasingly limited landspace for waste (Bondolfi, 2007). There are increasing concerns regarding the leaching of hazardous metals such as chromium, mercury and cadmium from landfill waste, especially electronic and electric wastes ? the so-called eWastes. In more developed countries such as the United States of America and Western Europe the problem of eWaste has grown to the extent where legislation has been enacted, such as the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) legislation of the EU (European Union Directive 2002/96/EC). The 19th and 20th centuries have seen major technological advances. Relevant to this paper is the availability of centrally generated electrical power, telecommunication, entertainment through recorded and transmitted music and images, the growth and pervasive influence of electronics, and the handling of digital data by computers and microprocessors. These developments have placed ever increasing demands on resources for the manufacture of electrical and electronic equipment, as well as on the generation of electrical power. Most of the resources required are non-renewable: copper, steel, aluminium and other metals, various thermoplastic polymers such as PVC (polyvinyl chloride), polyethylene and ABS ( acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene), thermosetting polymers such as epoxies, elastomers such as butyl rubber, glasses and ceramics, and composites such as fibre reinforced plastic (fibreglass). The conservation of non-renewable resources inevitably includes recycling. To a certain extent, recycling of materials locally is well established. The production 01material liner than 75 µm in a number of open-circuit mills was investigated. The mils ranged from laboratory rod and ball mils treating a variety 01 ores to large industrial rod mils treating gold and copper ores. It was shown that the dependence on feed rate 01 the production 01 material liner than 751J.1T1 can be accurately described by a simple formula that was derived in previous work. In some 01 the systems reviewed, it proved possible to assess the feed rate 01 ore to the mil at which the rate 01 production 01 material finer than 75 µm can be maximized.

SYNOPSIS A prototype collimated radiometric face scanner was tested in the Harmony Gold Mine. The results obtained during the pilot study indicate that in situ radiometric uranium assays are statistically indistinguishable from those obtained conventionally from channel chip samples. In addition, the study demonstrated that reasonably reliable gold estimates can be deduced from the radiometric measurements, by use of the ratio of gold to uranium within a mine. The instrumentation, calibration procedures, and background determination are described briefly.

Gy&apos;s sampling theory under the heading &apos;Sampling the mill feed&apos; (p. 153). The other aspect relates to his reference to one of our papers1 that was published in the Journal (p. 152).
