The properties and deterioration in strength of cemented tailings backfill (CTB )in the underground acidic environment under oxidizing conditions were studied. X-ray diffraction analysis and scanning electron microscopy of the surface of the CTB was carried out, and the sulphuric acid corrosion mechanism elucidated. The properties tested included compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion, internal friction angle, variation in the hydrogen ion concentration, and stress-strain relationship in different corrosion periods. The damage model of the CTB was established considering the effects of parameters such as corrosion time and strain on the damage evolution. It was found that the compressive strength, elastic modulus, cohesion (binder effect), and internal friction angle increased at first and then decreased with exposure time. In the long term, the peak stress decreased with corrosion time while the peak strain increased; elastic modulus, and deformation modulus also decreased. The damage caused by corrosion and by load were related by means of a mathematical model, which revealed the relationships between sulphuric attack, load, and damage to backfill in complex underground environments. During corrosion, the expansion of gypsum and ettringite caused microfractures in the CTB. With increasing corrosion time, micro-cracks developed and proliferated. The mechanism of corrosion damage was found to be the dissolution of hydrogen ions and a sulphate ion reaction that produces an expansive substance, resulting in deterioration of the strength of CTB.

Lonmin Platinum installed a concentrated mode dual-alkali scrubber at the smelter in Marikana in 2002. The dual-alkali scrubber was the technology of choice at that time as a sulphur fixation plant, due to the perceived benefits of handling both the high SO2 concentrations of converter off-gas and the swings in SO2 concentration that are linked to Peirce-Smith operation. Owing to current and impending legislative requirements for air quality and waste, Lonmin is currently considering additions to the dual-alkali plant, but is also evaluating alternative technologies for sulphur fixation. This paper reviews the decision of Lonmin to install a concentrated mode dual-alkali scrubber and presents plant performance achieved. It also describes the important control variables and sensitivities of the plant, and the final product that is produced by the operation of the plant. The legislative requirement that drives the Lonmin technology evaluation is also discussed.

ERPM was formed in 1893 and as a result of its age, a large volume of data exists in a paper-based format and it was decided to electronically capture data in one of two critical mining areas?namely at Far East Vertical (FEV) Shaft Area (Lower Areas) and Hercules Shaft Area (Upper Areas). The life of mine is dependent on tonnage and grade from these areas. Geostatistical evaluation of the gold reserves has been applied on an ad hoc basis in the Hercules Shaft Area and on a continuous basis in the FEV area. This is the first evaluation using geostatistics that was performed on the Upper Areas. This paper is based on the premise that regardless of cut-off grades, geostatistical estimation (kriging) estimates and locates reserves better than ?traditional? methods e.g. polygonal method, inverse squared distance method and it endeavours to estimate and locate the high grade reserves in the Main Reef Leader of Upper Areas.

Large volumes of quantitative geochemical data, presenting a formidable interpretation task to geologists, are generated in the course of exploration drilling for new ore deposits. The incorporation of geological expertise into computer programs developed for the interpretation of this data would improve the speed and accuracy with which it is interpreted. A detailed analysis of the geochemical log interpretation problem, together with a survey of relevant research in Artificial Intelligence and petroleum well- logging techniques, confirms, that artificial intelligence, particularly as developed in the fields of expert systems and pattern recognition, provides techniques for implementing such data interpretation programs. In addition, it provides data analysis techniques significantly more powerful than those currently applied to geochemical data, and very appropriate to the hypothesise and test' character of mineral exploration problem-solving. The conversion of raw borehole log data to meaningful higher level geochemical entities, in terms of which geological reasoning may take place, is a critical step in applying these techniques to log data analysis. A method of achieving this conversion as an exercise in signal-to-symbol transformation is presented.1

Historically bauxite-based refractories have been used in applications where andalusite-based refractories could work. Bauxite-based refractories were chosen over andalusite-based refractories mainly because of the availability of low-cost Chinese bauxite and also because many furnaces were designed by international companies that cannot easily access high-quality products. Currently, the availability of low-cost bauxite is under threat as a result of high export duties and tariffs as well as restrictions on the amount of material that China allows to be exported. South Africa is a major producer of andalusite, and this guarantees stability with respect to both availability and price. Refractories based on andalusite have an added economic advantage over bauxite-based refractories in that unlike bauxite, which requires high-temperature calcination before use, andalusite is used in its raw state. This paper constitutes a literature study of the merits, both technical and economic, of using refractories based on andalusite compared to bauxite-based refractories. SRC rockmass classification have been applied to 25 tunnels in Spain and Italy, for which it was found that much heavier supports than those estimated by the RMR index were required. SRC and RMR indices and other relevant geomechanical data were obtained during the site investigation and construction stages. Data corresponding to in situ stress measurements, analysis of tectonic structures, and instability problems arising during construction were used to asses the state of stress. The relationship between tunnel section convergence and the SRC and RMR indices was also analysed. Support measurements based on SRC and RMR classification were compared with those actually used during construction. These analyses indicate that for most of the tunnels examined, supports estimated using the SRC were much closer to those actually installed than those predicted by the RMR index. Bei der Verwendung des SRC-Systems zur Klassifizierung des Gesteins als Baugrund für 25 Tunnel in Spanien und Italien wurde festgestellt, dass viel schwerere Abstützungen benötigt wurden, als wenn die Beurteilung anhand des RMR-Systems angefertigt würde. Die Klassifizierung anhand des SRC- und des RMR-Systems, sowohl als auch andere wichtige geomechanische Daten wurden während des Ablaufs der Erkundungen und der Bauausführung gewonnen. Die Resultate der Messungen der Spannungen vor Ort, die Analyse der tektonischen Struktur und die Stabilitätsprobleme während der Bauausführung wurden dazu verwendet, um den im Felsgrund vorherrschenden Spannungszustand zu definieren. Das Verhältnis der Messungen der Tunnelkonvergenz zu dem SRC- und RMR-Index wurde auch analysiert. Die durch das SRC- und RMR-System vorhergesagte Grösse der Abstützung wurde mit der Grösse der Abstützungen verglichen, die am Bau letztlich verwandt wurden. Diese Vergleiche zeigen, dass für die meisten der studierten Tunnel die Vorhersage der Abstützungen, die anhand des SRC-Systems angefertigt wurden, viel näher der wirklich verwendeten waren als die Vorhersage anhand des RMR-Systems. SRC rockmass la classification ont été appliqué à 25 tunnels en Espagne et l'Italie, pour laquelle il a été trouvé que des appuis beaucoup plus lourds que ceux évalués par l'index RMR ont été exigés. SRC et des index RMR et d'autres données geomechanical appropriées ont été obtenu pendant l'enquête de site et les étapes(scènes) de construction. Les données correspondant aux mesures de stress(d'accent) in situ, l'analyse de structures tectoniques et des problèmes d'instabilité surgissant pendant la construction ont été utilisées aux ânes(culs) l'état de stress(d'accent). Le rapport entre la convergence de section de tunnel et le SRC et les index RMR a été aussi analysé. Les mesures d'appui basées sur SRC et la classification RMR ont été comparées avec ceux en réalité utilisés pendant la construction. Ces analyses indiquent que pour la plupart des tunnels examinés, les appuis évalués utilisant le SRC étaient beaucoup plus proches de ceux en réalité installés que ceux prévus par l'index RMR.

A simple method for the application of excess shear stress (ESS) analysis to the mining of planar reefs is examined. The potential for seismicity associated with mining is expressed as the calculated increase in ESS on a regular grid of points 50 m above the reef, and is compared with observed seismicity around a deep-level, relatively geologicaly-undisturbed gold mine. Thirty regions were studied, involving over 2000 seismic events with magnitudes greater than 1,5 on the Richter scale and associated with almost 2 million square metres of stoping. The total seismicity, measured either as the number of seismic events or as the total radiated energy, corelated more closely with changes in ESS than with ERR. The incidence of rockbursts also favoured the ESS model. Corelation coeficients of around 0,8 for seismicity and ESS indicated that the assumptions inherent in the method used are collectively reasonable. The total seismicity in each region was found not to be strongly controlled by the presence of dykes and faults, although numerous individual seismic events were located close to such features.

The role of viscometers for rheological characterization in the hydraulic transport of solids is discussed, and rheological models and phenomena pertinent to the hydraulic transport of backfill material are reviewed. The two main branches of viscometry (rotational and tube) for the measurement of mining slimes rheology are compared. The effects of solids concentration, particle size and chemical additives and the practical application of rheology in backfill system design are presented.

This paper presents the results of a project for developing a methodology for empirically determining some of the mechanical properties of the rock mass at the Äspö Hard Rock Laboratory, Southern Sweden. Using the equations available in the literature, the deformation modulus, friction angle, cohesion and unconfined compressive strength of the rock mass were estimated. A comparison of the results using different classification methods (Q, RMR, GSI, RMi, Ramamurthy’s) was made to estimate the range of variations in the mechanical properties with the considerations of: i) the quality/quantity of the geological data; ii) the technique for partitioning of the rock mass into homogeneous domains; iii) the sensitivity and subjectivity of the empirical methods; and iv) the need for validating the empirical methods against a test case. Cet article présente les résultats d’un projet visant à établir une méthodologie, pour déterminer, de façon empirique, les propriétés mécaniques de la masse rocheuse. En utilisant les corrélations disponibles dans la littérature, quelques-unes des propriétés de la masse rocheuse ont pu être déterminées (module de déformation, angle de friction, cohésion, force de compression illimitée). Une comparaison des résultats obtenus par différentes méthodes (Q, RMR, GSI, RMi, de Ramamurthy) a permis d’établir une échelle de variations des propriétés mécaniques et de formuler une série de recommandations concernant : i) la qualité/quantité des données géologiques ; ii) la technique de partition de la masse rocheuse dans des domaines homogènes ; iii) la sensibilité et la subjectivité des méthodes empiriques ; iv) la nécessité de valider les méthodes empiriques à l’aide de nouvelles études de cas. Dieses Paper präsentiert die Ergebnisse eines Projekts mit dem Ziel, eine Methodik für die empirische Festhellung von mechanischen Eigenschaften im Gesteinmassiv zu etablieren. Durch Verwendung der in der Literatur zugänglichen Korrelationen, wurden einige Eigenschaften des Gesteinmassivs festgestellt (Entstellungsmodul, Reibungswinkel, Kohäsion, unbeschränkte Kompressionsstärke). Ein Vergleich der Ergebnisse unterschiedlicher Methoden (Q, RMR, GSI, RMi, Ramamurthy’s) wurde durchgeführt und dies erlaubte die Feststellung der Variationsskala von den mechanischen Eigenschaften, sowie eine Reihe Empfehlungen für: i) Qualität/Quantität der geologischen Dateien; ii) die Technik für Teilung des Gesteinmassivs in homogene Domäne; iii)die Empfindlichkeit und Subjektivität der empirischen Methoden; iv) das Bedarf die empirische Methoden gegen neue Fallgeschichten zu validieren.

High Voltage Pulse (HVP) technology has the potential to transform traditional mineral processing practice in the mining industry. HVP pre-treatment has been shown to enable ore preconcentration, achieve ore pre-weakening and improve mineral liberation. In order to improve the efficiencies of these novel HVP applications, it is essential to understand how HVP operational factors affect ore breakage in HVP pre-treatment. A two-level fractional factorial experiment using two rock samples, a gold-copper ore and a basalt sample, was performed to determine which factors have statistically significant influences on breakage probability, size reduction, and energy efficiency, and which factors have insignificant influences. Operational factors investigated include applied voltage, electrode gap, number of pulse discharges, the number of rocks being processed per batch, and rock size. In total, 1920 batch tests were conducted. For ore breakage characterised in terms of breakage probability and the degree of size reduction during HVP pre-treatment, the dominant factors were identified to be the number of pulse discharges, voltage, and the number of particles present in the processing zone. As all these three factors are related to the specific energy, it is concluded that the specific energy is the most important factor controlling ore breakage in HVP treatment. In terms of the efficiency by which spark energy is transferred from the generator energy, the factors found to have the most dominating influence were the particle size, the number of rock particles present in the processing zone and the voltage. Increasing the values of these factors reduced the loss of HVP energy during the energy transfer process. The factorial experiment using the two ore samples with vastly different mineralisation produced similar results. This paper describes some important aspects associated with historical underground measurements in South African gold and coal mines. Deformation measurements were used to confirm the use of elastic theory to simulate the rock mass behaviour in the Witwatersrand gold mines in the 1960s. Although a prominent time-dependent component of stope closure was measured as early as the 1930s, it was ignored owing to the benefit of adopting elastic theory. Neglecting the time-dependent response of the rock for many decades resulted in important aspects such as the effect of mining rate, the effect of advance per blast, and the need for enhanced design criteria not being explored. Recent work is only now starting to address this gap in knowledge. In-situ measurements of large coal specimens in the 1960s and 1970s indicated that a linear formula may possibly be a better approximation of coal pillar strengths. This alternative formulation was never adopted, however, as the power law strength formula was already deeply entrenched in the industry at that stage. In spite of these apparent failures to continuously generate and adopt new knowledge, a key lesson learnt is that major advances in rock mechanics will not be possible without careful monitoring of the rock mass behaviour in experimental sites. Areas requiring further research, such as pillar strength formulae for the Bushveld Complex and enhanced design criteria for the gold mines, can only be developed using extensive undergroundmonitoring programmes.

This study investigates the enrichment of a low-grade colemanite concentrate (-3 mm) using a Knelson centrifugal gravity concentrator. Due to its low boron content, the concentrate is unsaleable and has to be stored under appropriate conditions to avoid potential environmental problems. The low-grade colemanite concentrate was comminuted to size fractions of-1 mm, -0.5 mm, and -0.15 mm before treatment in the Knelson Concentrator. The effects of particle size, fluidizing water velocity, and bowl speed on the enrichment process were examined. The B2O3content of the concentrate was increased from 33.96% to a maximum of 45.52%. B2O3recovery increased with increasing bowl speed and particle size, and decreased with increasing fluidizing water velocity. The enrichment process also rejected arsenic and iron to some extent, with a maximum reduction of arsenic from 1360 g/t to 765 g/t and iron from 0.88% to0.33%.

Small scale mining (SSM) has been going on for a long time in Ghana. SSM was legalized by the PNDC Law 218, 1989. Since then there have been numerous gains from the SSM industry. The SSM is organized locally by the concession owner who engages people to work for the gold which he buys. Small scale miners (SSMs) use crudely made sluices in Ghana and, therefore, their production falls below what is expected. The SSMs work in groups and not as cooperatives, as they do in Brazil and other Latin American countries. Legalization of SSM has curbed gold smuggling considerably because a gold marketing entity is available. SSM poses certain environmental problems like pollution of water bodies and soils by mercury and indiscriminate digging of pits.

The increased attention towards reducing emissions of fossil CO2 due to its potential global warming effect has resulted in a focus on renewable resources, as charcoal. Since charcoal is produced from growing wood it does not contribute to global warming. This paper gives a brief review of consequences of and reasons for using charcoal in the silicomanganese (SiMn) production. Results are presented from practical SiMn smelting experiments, on a pilot scale, using charcoal as reduction material and comparing with coke. As slag- and CO2-reactivity are important for furnace performance these features have also been measured.

Although blasting is one of the most widely used methods for rock fragmentation, it has a major disadvantage in that it causes adjacent ground vibrations. Excessive ground vibrations can cause a wide range of problems, from nearby residents complaining to ecological damage. Prediction of blast-induced ground vibration is essential for evaluating and controlling the many adverse consequences of surface blasting. Since there are several effective variables with highly nonlinear interactions, no comprehensive model of blast-induced vibrations is available. In this study, the support vector machine (SMV) algorithm was employed for prediction of the peak particle velocity (PPV) induced by blasting at a surface mine. Twelve input variables in three categories of rock mass, blast pattern, and explosives were used for prediction of the PPV at different distances from the blast face. The results of 100 experiments were used for model-building, and 20 for testing. A high coefficient of determination with low mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) was achieved, which demonstrates the suitability of the algorithm in this case. The very high accuracy of prediction and fast computation are the two major advantages of the method. Although the case study was for a large surface mining operation, the methodology is applicable to all other surface blasting projects that involve a similar procedure.

Amandelbult Mine is currently undertaking a trial to mechanise the mining of the UG2 reef through the introduction of room and pillar mining. As part of the trial, a system of managing the control of the hanging wall has been introduced, based on systems and technology that are proving successful in the nearby coal mining industry. The principal features are the use of a high bond strength, stiff bolting system which can be easily installed to a high standard, and a range of in situ tests and measurements to optimise the level of support installed to control the movement of the hanging wall. The rock bolt system and the measurements and tests described are new to the platinum mining industry. The paper describes these systems and their adaptation and application to hard rock mining. La Mine d’Amandelbult est actuellement dans des essais en vue de mécaniser l’extraction dans la veine UG2 grâce à l’introduction d’une exploitation par chambres et piliers. Dans le cadre de ces essais, un système de gestion de la paroi suspendue a été introduit, base sur des systèmes et une technologie qui prouvent donner de bons résultats dans l’industrie voisine d’extraction de la houille. Les caractéristiques principales sont l’utilisation d’un système de verrouillage raide et à forte adhérence qui peut être installé à un haut niveau de qualité et une gamme d’essais et de mesures in situ pour optimiser le niveau de soutien installé pour contrôler le mouvement de la paroi suspendue. Le système de verrouillage de la roche ainsi que les mesures et les essais décrits sont une nouveauté dans l’industrie minière du platine. La communication décrit ces systèmes ainsi que leur adaptation et leur application à l’exploitation minière en roche dure. Amandelbult Mine unternimmt gegenwärtig einen Test um den Abbau des UG2 Riffs durchEinführung des Kammerpfeilbau zu mechanisieren. Als Teil dieses Tests wurde ein System zur Kontrolle der Stollenfirstes eingeführt, welches auf jenen Systemen und Technologien basiert, diesich im nahe gelegenen Kohlebergbau als erfolgreich erwiesen. Die prinzipiellen Charakteristikasind der Gebrauch von einem steifen Bolzensytem mit hohem Verbundwiderstand die leicht zueinem hohen Standard gebracht werden können, und eine Reihe von in-situ Tests und Messungenum das Niveau der installierten Unterstützung zu optimieren, und um die Bewegung desStollenfirstes zu kontrollieren. Das Gesteinsbolzensystem, die Messungen und die Tests, diebeschrieben werden, sind neu in der Platinbergbauindustrie. Diese Arbeit beschreibt diese Systeme, deren Anpassung und Anwendung im Hartgesteinsbergbau.

Consideration is given to the problem of the estimation, from limited data, of the likely grade and tonnage for a new mining property that is to be exploited by the selective mining of two metals that have substantial contributions to make to the total revenue. In particular, the case of a new gold and uranium mine in South Africa is analysed as follows. (I) The applicability of the underlying lognormal bivariate model for different support (i.e. ore unit) sizes is examined. (2) The necessary parameters for the bivariate lognormal models for different block sizes are estimated from abundant chipsampling data from a section of the Hartebeestfontein Gold Mine using alternative approaches, and the results are compared. (3) A method is given for obtaining the necessary parameters for a tonnage-grade relationship relative to a joint pay limit from the very limited information likely to be available at the end of the exploration stage of a gold mine, and the results are compared with those obtained from the large volume of data available from a minedout area.

Meintjies in the Chair, 15 Fellows, 7 Members, 2 Associate Members and 10 Visitors. Mr Meintjies extended a welcome to all the members and their wives, and the many visitors and their wives. A special welcome to Mr Robinson the outgoing President of the Institute and Prof. Howat the President Elect and Mrs Howat. The minutes were read and adopted. The Chairman read his Report for the past year and also the Financial Statement. Mr E. Jackson proposed the acceptance of the Financial Statement and Mr Winship seconded it. Mr Meintjies thanked Mr Vic Robinson for all the help he had given throughout the past year. He also thanked the outgoing Committee for their support, and the Secretary for arranging the function. Mr Meintjies congratulated Mr Alex Bain on his election as Chairman and asked him to continue with the meeting.
