Iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs), despite their small size, are stable and have a large surface area that allows for absorption and removal of ions as well as turbidity in a short period of time. Thus, the present study addressed the synthesis and characterization of Fe3O4 NPs synthesized using the co-precipitation method and evaluated their effect on the coagulation process in water treatment. The Fe3O4 NPs characteristics were evaluated as follows: magnetic properties were measured using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), surface area using Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), crystal phase using X-ray diffraction (XRD), and morphology using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM). In addition, the effects of the synthetic Fe3O4 NPs on the turbidity reduction of water in various pH levels were evaluated. The synthesized Fe3O4 NPs were without any impurity in the sizes of 22–32 nm, surface area of 99.6 m2/g, pores’ mean diameter size of approximately 10.6 nm, and maximum magnetic saturation of 66.21 emu/gram (emu/g). Using 0.2 g of synthetic Fe3O4 NPs with an initial turbidity of 17 NTU and pH of 6 could reduce all water turbidity (100%). Considering the cheap and facile production and separation, as well as the possibility to reuse them and reduce the sludge water content, iron oxide Fe3O4 NPs can be effectively used for turbidity reduction in the water treatment process.

The conceptual designs of three new applications for the biogenic &S treatment of metal- containing waters are presented. These include: 1. the treatment of a circumneutral-pH ground water containing Zn and Cd using limestone as an alkalinity source, 2. a two-step treatment process where toxic heavy metals in contaminated ground water are recovered separately from nontoxic metals to lessen disposal costs, and 3. a copper recovery process that may be a low-cost alternative to solvent extraction/electrowinning or cementation for dilute copper leach liquors. INTRODUCTION Cross, et al. (1974), produced a retrospective study of standard setting for underground miners. This report had two distinct components; i) criteria of importance for the protection of the miners, and ii) economic considerations for standard setting. The methods for setting radiation safety standards reviewed were: dose calculations and consensus methods; epidemiology; pathology; bioassay; animal experiments; sputum cytology; chromosome aberrations; and, the Mantel-Bryan Model. By looking back, the authors intended to enable officials to look ahead in making future decisions based on reasonable conclusions. Now it may be time to consider underground miners' protection from another perspective: are there miners who may be especially susceptible to toxic environments?; and if so, are there any biomedical assays that might be indicative of exceptional sensitivities to toxic substances? The human population is genetically very heterogeneous. The data of Saccomanno, et al. (1973), reveal great variability in individual response to radon daughter exposure and only a small portion of the miner population subject to toxic inhalants develop squamous cell metaplasia (Saccomanno, et al., 1970). The majority of the miner population is either not susceptible or is resistant to the toxic agents. This information suggests the existence of a small subpopulation with increased sensitivity or reduced resistance and underscores the need for indicators from biomedical assays that might prove of value for the detection of such individuals. The heightened awareness of the contribution of pollutants in the environment for the potential induction of mutations and carcinogenesis lead to a profusion of short-term bioassays to circumvent the high cost and time-consuming large toxicity animal studies. Over 100 bioassays across taxa from microbes to man are at various stages of use or development (Hollstein, et al., 1979). Less than a dozen tests currently offer early promise for application to[ in vivo] effect studies of man. Many are still in early development, lack the sensitivity needed for a retrospective or prospective study at current permissible exposures, are impractical to conduct in the field, or are not cost effective. The purpose of this paper is to review some of the bioassays that may now, or in the near term, prove applicable for the detection of individual underground miners with increased susceptibility to toxic agents. Throughout this statement, it is assumed that any single test may give false negatives or false positives and, therefore, a tier of tests should be investigated. The possible tests are in various stages of development; some tests better proven than others with a firmer data base and, therefore, with greater probability of usefulness. Some of the less proven assays are not ruled out if they have practical or theoretical promise as indicators. Table I summarizes the assays critiqued for their potential to monitor the effects of [in vivo] exposure to genotoxic substances. POTENTIAL INDICATORS OF HIGHLY SENSITIVE MINERS Assays of Body Fluids It is desirable to have data on the agent(s) to which subjects are exposed when humans are monitored by biomedical effects. Obviously, to varying intensity, the underground mining environments are monitored for radon daughters and it is recognized that the miners are also exposed to other pollutants, most notably, uranium ore dust and diesel fumes. Further testing for the metabolites of the pollutants can be done on body fluid, urine. [High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)]: This is a very sensitive method for the detection of mutagenic metabolites in urine. The urine is treated with the enzyme sulfatase and beta-glucuronidase to permit identification of substances that are made nonmutagenic by conjugation as glucuronides. The sample is then passed through an XAD-2 resin column and the absorbed organic molecules eluted with acetone. The sample is then split and evaporated to 1 ml and used for direct chemical analysis using HPLC. One drawback to the test is the inability to measure cumulative exposure, but multiple samples can be obtained and comparison to baseline (control) and exposure samples can reveal qualitative differences as a consequence of exposure to mutagens. [The Ames/Salmonella Microbiological Assay]: The Ames/Salmonella microbiological mutagen test is the most extensively used short-term bioassay, with over 2,600 chemicals having undergone testing by this method (Hollstein, et al., 1979). The method, thoroughly worked out and tested for 10 years, consists of taking the second split urine sample from the HPLC preparation, evaporating to dryness and dissolving in dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO). Copper dump and heap leaching operations are conducted worldwide for production of substantial amounts of copper Such dumps and heaps contain appreciable amounts of other potentially valuable elements such as gold, Iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, silver, titanium, and uranium. Except for uranium, recovery of these elements has not been attempted to any significant extent However, such recovery merits attention based upon availability of existing chemical techniques. Formation of commodity agreements depends mainly on the economic instability and associated mitigation measures inherent in the economic conflict between more developed and less developed nations. Five types of possible agreements exist: futures market, buffer stock, restrictive agreement, multilateral contract, and compensatory finance. Lack of market separation between sulfur consumers and producers coupled with large world production and highly concentrated export production in theory suggest a restrictive agreement as most likely. In practice, stockpiling of sulfur, an informal buffer stock, as done in Canada and perhaps the Middle East, has been the main sulfur price-supporting mechanism in the past two decades. No commodity agreements involving sulfur now exist except for multilateral contracts. Sulfur agreements apparently have existed rarely, if at all, in the past. Law (1975) refers to sulfur as one of a group of commodities where "there have been additional control efforts of various types." Clearly, sulfur was a candidate, at least conceptually in the past, for some form of commodity agreement. The following discussion centers on the world sulfur market from 1976 to 1985 in this context.

Geochemical characteristics, shapes and surface textures of manganese nodules from two blocks located in the southern (9°N~11°N) (KR5) and northern parts (16°N~17°N) (KR2) of the Clarion-Clipperton fracture zone between 130°W and 133°W were investigated in terms of sediment distribution and metal contents for better understanding of controlling factors of seabed manganese nodule genesis. Two blocks, ~700 km away, are dominated by the nodules with different origins, each of which has distinctive chemical compositions and shapes. KR2 block is dominated by irregular and poly-type nodules of hydrogenetic origin with low Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and high Fe and Co contents, while KR5 block is dominated by discoidal and ellipsoidal nodules of diagenetic origin with high Mn/Fe, Cu, and Ni contents and low Fe and Co contents. In addition, nodules from two blocks show different surface textures: smooth and transitional in KR2 and dimorphic and rough in KR5. Sediment distribution is also distinctly different in two blocks. The study area consists of three sediment types: Unit 1 ? dark brown mud with an intermediate metal content, Unit 2 - yellowish brown mud with poor metal content, and Unit 3 ? black metalliferous mud. KR2 is characterized by the thick occurrences (<250 cm) of Unit 1 at the surface while Unit 1 distributes thin (<12 cm) in KR5. Higher primary production rate in the southern block proximal to equator and resulting high supply rate of metals to the sediment might be the cause for the dominance of diagenetic nodules in the southern block, but potential controls of different sediment distribution on the nodule genesis can not be excluded. If it is the case, Unit 1 with an intermediate metal content likely has been acting as a sink for metals by precipitating micro-nodules within the sediment column. Within the KR5, the hydrogenetic nodules occur preferentially on the seabed where Unit 3 distributes at shallower depth (<50 cm). Unit 3 has 2 or 3 times higher metal contents than other types of sediments. It might play the same role as Unit 1 in the northern block that prevents the supply of metals to the sediment surface. The feasibility of developing the Underground Science City below the Kent Ridge Park has been investigated. The primary aim of the study has been to explore the possibility of creating underground space to house a new community of research laboratories and offices. The investigation represents the first such study undertaken in Singapore for a non-military underground facility. The paper describes the geology of the Underground Science City site and illustrates the layout and plan of the Underground Science City. The geology and rock mass below the Kent Ridge Park is generally favorable for the development of an underground cavern complex. Underground Science City can be potentially developed housed in a cavern complex. Several potential development schemes are studied; with various combination of deep/shallow mined caverns of different span sizes and access options. The preferred scheme is shallow, mined room-and-pillar caverns with large spans and shaft accesses at both existing surface Science Park 1 and Science Park 2. The scheme can be potentially expanded laterally to create more underground space for new Underground Science Cities at Kent Ridge area.

Four counties in Indiana--LaPorte, Vigo, Vanderburgh, and Switzerland--have potential for deep underground limestone mining because they are in or are near high population areas and have no surface-minable limestone de- posits. The principal markets are Gary-South Bend, Terre Haute, Evansville, and Cincinnati. Minable seams suitable for aggregate are 120 to 150 meters (400 to 500 feet) below the surface in LaPorte and Vigo Counties, about 90 meters (300 feet) below the surface in Switzerland County, and about 600 meters (2,000 feet) below the surface in Vanderburgh County. Some deposits are also suitable for high-purity uses or for cement raw materials, which enhances their potential for exploitation.

Valley-fill heap leaches built in steep terrain over low-friction angle liner system may be unstable even though analyses indicate stable ore slopes. This paper demonstrates the potential for massive heap failure using stability analyses which consider both heap slope and heap mass failure considerations. The computations presented also reveal the sensitivity of mass heap stability to liner friction angles.

Many high-grade manganese deposits of the world occur in marine transgressive sedimentary sequences deposited on stable platforms. These include the Nikopol and related deposits in the Soviet Union and Groote Eylandt, Australia, among others. We suggest that the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains and the vast area of Cretaceous rocks in the middle of North America are favorable provinces for sedimentary manganese deposits because regionally transgressive units are widespread. North America has 16% of the world&apos;s land area but only about 0.2% of known high-grade manganese reserves. This disparity is difficult to reconcile in view of the fact that large areas of North America are underlain by rocks that we consider at least broadly favorable to contain manganese ores, and we suggest, therefore, that important high-grade deposits remain to be found in North America.

Injecting water under pressure to wet the coalbed in advance of mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Owing to economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is currently limited to the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob gas boreholes. Computer coalbed reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed.

Promising placer gold exploration sites offshore Lunenburg County are drowned pre- and post-glacial river channels and auriferous glacial tills. Gold values up to 5.67 9/m3 have been encountered in the vicinity of the Ovens Peninsula offshore Lunenburg County. Moderate gold values associated with notable amounts of heavy minerals were reported from various other exploration sites in this area. This paper highlights the major geological and gemorphological features for placer gold depositions in southern Nova Scotia. The past to present gold exploration activities nearshore and offshore Lunenburg County are summarized and potential areas for placer gold identified.

Best known for its extensive bauxite and alumina exports, Jamaica also has a small but active industrial minerals sector. The island has for many years been a net exporter of small tonnages of gypsum, metallurgical-grade limestone and marble products. As bauxite and alumina earnings have declined the government of Jamaica has made extra efforts to promote growth of overseas sales of these nonmetallics. The nearby U.S. market is a natural first choice for new exports. Overview In 1984, Jamaica quarried an estimated 3.2 million cu m of marble and fill and an additional 3.5 million cu m of sand and gravel, for use in domestic construction. These amounts are in line with the production in earlier years of the 1980s but are not a factor in the export pattern and need not be considered further. Similarly, annual production of 15 million ton of silica sand for the manufacture of glass bottles is principally consumed by the domestic market.

Jamaica has extensive deposits of marble, gypsum, and limestone, offering prospects for commercial sales to nearby US markets, notably the Gulf Coast and Southeast. Stare-owned and private Jamaican industrial minerals producers have made limited sales to date but expect to increase exports during the balance of the 1980s. Restraints include Jamaican government controls on access to essential foreign exchange for new capital investments and distribution of profits. Jamaican efforts to identify market opportunities in the US are reviewed, and the outlook for further exports of carbonates is discussed.

INTRODUCTION Uranium mining operations release radioactive materials into both air and water and generate large quantities of solid wastes containing low levels of radioactive materials. Solid wastes produced by mining operations remain on the surface at many inactive mining sites in the Western United States. These mining effluents may present a potential health and environmental hazard. Therefore, Congress, in Section 114(c) of the Uranium Mill Tailings Radiation Control Act of 1978, instructed the Administrator of EPA to prepare a report identifying the location and potential health, safety, and environmental hazards of uranium mine wastes and to recommend a program to eliminate these hazards. Several facts and limitations helped shape the method and approach of the EPA study. Little information on uranium mines was available; measurement information that was available on uranium mine wastes was frequently influenced (biased) by nearby uranium mills; time and resources did not permit comprehensive field studies to provide additional data; and there are inherent variations between uranium mines and sites that complicate generic assessments of mine wastes. To accommodate these facts, the EPA developed conceptual models of uranium mines and made health and environmental projections from them. The models were based upon available data from the literature, supplemented with information from discussions with persons inside and outside the EPA, and by doing several short-term field studies in Texas, New Mexico, and Wyoming. When necessary, conservative (maximizing) assumptions were employed. This paper presents a brief account of a part of the EPA study dealing with the potential health and environmental effects caused by active surface and underground uranium mines. Airborne contaminants are emphasized, although solid and liquid effluents are also included. Due to the limited space, only the methods and parameters used and the results of the assessments will be presented here. Anyone interested in the source of the data used and the development of the parameters should refer to the EPA report (Blanchard et al., 1981). The occurrence and emissions of stable elements were included in the EPA report, however, due to space limitations and their apparent small impact, except for possibly at some specific mines, only radioactive sources will be included in this presentation. MODEL URANIUM MINES The model surface mine was located in the South Powder River Basin of Wyoming and the model underground mine was located in the Ambrosia Lake area of New Mexico. These are the prevalent type mines in those areas. The model mines were based on the average production parameters of the 63 open pit mines and the 256 underground mines that were operating in the United States in 1978 (Department of Energy, 1979) and on a report of an extensive study of open pit mines in Wyoming (Nielson et al., 1979). Information contained in environmental impact statements and in reports from federal and state agencies was also used. Parameters for the model mines are listed in Table 1. The surface mining scenario is that 7 pits are opened in the 17-year mine life with overburden from each successively mined pit used to backfill a previously completed pit, resulting in an equivalent of one pit of overburden (2.4 year production) stored on the surface. No backfilling is assumed at the underground mine. Overburden or waste rock, ore, and sub-ore are separated into separate piles that are either rectangular in shape with length twice the width or in the shape of a frustum of a regular cone. Both shapes have 45 degree sloping sides. To account for bulking, the volume of the material comprising the piles was considered to be 25% greater than the volume of material removed from the ground. It was assumed that dewatering was required at both mine sites. Wastewater discharge rates at the surface and underground mines were assumed to be 3.0 and 2.0 cu m per min, respectively. SOURCE TERMS The following radioactive contaminants at active uranium mines were assessed in the EPA report: 1. Radioactive particulates in a) wind suspended dust from waste rock (overburden) pile, sub-ore pile, ore stockpile, b) suspended dust from mining activities (rock breakage, loading and unloading ore and wastes), and c) vehicular dust, 2. Rn-222 emanation from waste rock (overburden) pile, sub-ore pile, ore stockpile, and mining activities, 3. Rn-222 emanation from mine surface areas, and 4. Radionuclides in wastewater discharged to land surface. Estimated average annual dust emissions (item 1 above) from the model mines are listed in Table 2. Emission factors and the assumptions used to estimate these dust emissions are described in detail in the EPA report. Radioactive source terms were computed for each of the sources; dust emissions were multiplied by the concentrations listed in Table 1

The degree of injury and days lost from work due to an injury are examined for selected electrical sources, occurring in conjunction with falls of the injured miner or with selected machinery, that could have been eliminated by use of diesel equipment. Although the number of electrical source injuries that could have been prevented is small relative to the total number of injuries during the period examined, many lost-time injuries could have been precluded and thousands of days lost from work could have been avoided.

Deep-sea hydrothermal vents (hereafter chimneys) are commonly found on the new crust forming along divergent plate boundaries. Related to the chimney cycle from birth to death, it is hard to define the growth stage of the chimney due to a brief life span of the venting hydrothermal plume. Here we try to categorize the mineral magnetic properties of the chimneys according to their venting fluid-temperatures. Hydrothermal sulfide deposits in the Southwest Pacific were explored in 2012 and chimneys were collected using remotely operated vehicle (ROV) and Grab with AV camera (GTV). In the present study, mineral magnetic properties of three Cu-rich chimneys were measured: a high-temperature chimney showing a venting fluid-temperature of about 200°C (ROV01); a lowtemperature chimney of about 80°C (GTV01); and an inactive chimney (ROV02). The chimneys were sliced to ~1 cm intervals from core to outer margin. Magnetic properties of ROV01 are dominated by pyrrhotite, except for the most outer part that experienced severe oxidation. Concentration and grain-size of pyrrhotite are relatively low and fine respectively. In the GTV01, pyrrhotite, dominant in the core, is gradually mixed with hematite toward the outer margin of the chimney due to secondary oxidation. Both the concentration and grain-size of the magnetic minerals are greater compared to the GTV01. High concentration and large grain-size of magnetic minerals characterize ROV02. Dominant magnetic phases are pyrrhotite, hematite, and goethite. In particular, the most outer margin shows the presence of magnetite produced possibly by magnetotactic bacterial activity. Such distinctive contrast in magnetic concentration, grain-size, and mineralogy among three different types of chimneys enables the life stage of the Cu-rich chimneys to be determined through a mineral magnetic study.

The determination of the surface area that may be impacted by underground mining is an important consideration in subsidence engineering. A number of parameters have been utilized to identify this influence area, most notably the angles of draw and break. This paper discusses the implications of selecting an appropriate "damage angle" for defining a potential damage area due to mining, within which surface structures may be impacted. Furthermore, the influence of both mining and geological factors (i.e., mining width, depth and overburden lithology) on this angle is examined using the Surface Deformation Prediction System (SDPS) software. Finally, recommendations are given for applying these concepts in subsidence control.

Radioisotope tracers have so far been used for extraction of residence time distributions of flotation devices. They have also been proven applicable to evaluation of rate coefficients k of industrial flotation. It is now shown how values of k are scaled up on the basis of laboratory data on flotation and chemical conditioning, and of laboratory testing of samples from output of industrial conditioning vessel. Subsequently a model of conditioning and flotation is obtained which may be used for simulation and control of the steady state of the combined process. Discussion extends to modelling, simulation, CAD and opti- mization of flotation plants with re- circulation, and of ore dressing systems which consist of grinding and flotation plants.

This paper presents the results of a hypothetical case study that evaluates the potential transition of a large copper mining and extraction operation to 90% renewable energy. The case study considers three phases to accomplish such a transition; phase I considers installation of renewable power generation at the site to meet a portion of the current electric power needs, phase II considers conversion of diesel combustion mining equipment to electric equipment, and phase III considers implementation of renewable energy generation coupled with energy storage systems to provide approximately 90% of the total mine site energy requirements. The paper evaluates the results in the context of a range of purchased electric power unit costs ($0.065, $0.100, and $0.135/kWh) as well as various carbon tax scenarios ($0, $5.00, and $37.30/t CO2). While the case study is hypothetical and considers a range of assumptions, it clearly identifies a pathway to potentially economically viable transitions to a renewable energy platform for mining companies. This represents an approach that mining companies can use to help to meet emissions targets, as well as social responsibility and reporting requirements.
