Several research groups have spent considerable time investigating coarse ore leaching. Coarse ore leaching includes both heap and dump leaching. The term "heap leaching" will be used in this paper to mean any type of coarse ore leaching. The results of their work are generally in agreement: the progress of leaching can be described by the shrinking core model and its associated mathematics. The shrinking core model is schematically represented in Figure 1. The particle is contacted by the leach solution on its outside surface and the solution migrates inward by filling the pores on the particle. As the solution filling the pores comes in contact with grains of ore mineral the reagent chemically reacts with the ore mineral to solubilize the contained metal. The solubilized metal diffuses outward to the particle surface and is washed away by the leach solution flowing past the particle. The leaching reagent in the particle interior is replenished by the diffusion of reagent from the surface of the particle to the interior of the particle. If the chemical reaction between the leaching reagent and the ore mineral is relatively fast compared to the diffusion rate of the reagent in the solution in the pores of the particle then leaching proceeds from the outside of the particle inward resulting in a "shrinking core" of unreacted ore surrounded by a "leached shell". The rate controlling step in the reaction can initially be a chemical reaction between the reagent and the ore mineral grain, however, once the reaction has proceeded a short period of time diffusion of the leaching reagent through the leached shell will be the slow step and hence the rate controlling step in the production of metal from an ore particle.

In-mine Continuous Wave (CH) Radio Imaging method (RIM) instrumentation has the capability of measuring EM wave propagation constants in layered formations. The RIM method is based upon the fact that seams of coal, trona, potash, quartzite, gilsonite and oil bearing sands form natural waveguides for low loss transmission of electromagnetic (EM) waves. The waveguide forms whenever the seam is bounded by more conducting claystone, mudstone, shale or in the case of oil/gas traps, by a floor of saline water. Disturbances caused by faults, shear zones, paleochannels, sills and dikes significantly alter the propagation constant. The analytical values of the EM wave propagation constants depend on the physical and electrical parameters of the seam. The values are presented in this paper in a graphical form to assist in the interpretation of RIM tomographic images. This paper compares in-mine geologic mapping obtained during mining to tomographic images of the geologic disturbance zones in a Central Utah coal mine.

The effect of Federal restrictions on Federal mineral estate in Alaska and the Western States is being addressed by systematic, State-by- State studies. The Bureau of Mines has inventoried and classified 3.5 million sq km (876 million acres) of land, section-by-section, according to 1) mineral ownership, 2) availability for mineral exploration and development as affected by Federal restrictions, and 31, areas containing mines and mineral resources. The availability of Federal land for exploration and development is spatially compared to areas containing mines and mineral resources. The methodology and overall results of the studies are presented.

This section describes two exploration models currently used in the search for porphyry exploration deposits: the hood and the vertical cylinder. Each has alternate names within industry and in the literature. The hood is also known as the Climax or Henderson and the vertical cylinder has also been called the Mt. Pleasant model. The paper by Hollister (1978, abstract herewith) refers to the vertical cylinder as the zoned model in reference to the horizontal sulfide and silicate zonation evident in and peripheral to the vertical cylinder of molybdenite mineralization. The distinct ore body geometry in each model type necessitates differing drilling and exploration strategies. Drilling for a hood shape is clearly different from drilling for a vertical cylinder type target. The paper by Wallace et al. (1968, abstract herewith) on multiple intrusion and mineralization at Climax, CO, well describes the hood model. That description is supplemented by the paper by Wallace et al. (1978, abstract with Chap. 37) on the geology of the Urad and Henderson deposits. The paper by Hollister (1978, abstract herewith) describes the vertical cylinder model.

Introduction Lyon, with 1.1 million inhabitants, is the third largest city in France after Paris and Marseille. It is a lively industrial centre. Lyon lies at the intersection of many transport routes and at the fluence of Rhone and Saone. Like all large cities, Lyon is attempting to alleviate inner city traffic problems by constructing a metro. Metro construction in Lyon began with tunnels built by cut and cover methods along the streets. Deep diaphram walls, which were back anchored and toed into imperveous strata, formed the excavation walls. It is a very economic and simple method. However during the construction period, it has the disavantage of strangling urban life for several years. It is therefore increasingly being replaced by subsurface tunnelling methods. As it was decided to build the metro tunnel between the Guillotiere and St. Jean stations, and thus cross under the Rhone and Saone, the client, Semaly, put the contract out for a competitive tender in which the general parameters were defined. Line, level and construction method were left to the contractor. There was an extensive examination of the tenders, during which reference projects from competitors in Japan were visited, as well as in Germany. Finally the consortium of Dragages, Campenon Bernard, Colas and Hochtief was awarded the contract to drive this tunnel section with an hydro-shield and an extruded steel fibre concrete lining, a Hochtief design.

The Taharoa plant of New Zealand Steel Mining Limited extracts a 57% Fe titano-magnetite concentrate from a large mineral sand deposit 90 miles south of Auckland on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. The plant consists of an 18-inch suction cutter dredge which feeds a 750 TPH floating separation plant. An initial gravity/ size separation is obtained using cone concentrators. Finished concentrate is produced by a combination of conventional drum magnetic separators and top fed wet Mortsell magnetic separators. Concentrate is stockpiled by cyclone, and reclaimed by a bull- dozer and tunnel system. Repulped concentrate is pumped by sub- marine pipeline to slurry tankers anchored at a single buoy one mile offshore. Current concentrate production rate is in excess of one million metric tons per year.

The January 1988 issue of Engineering and Mining Journal includes two short articles on blasting practices in surface gold mines (Anon., 1988 ; Carr , 1988). A reader of these articles learns, among other things, that a "12 x 13 ft" blasting pattern is used at the Carson Hill Mine, and a "17-ft burden and 18-ft spacing" is used at Echo Bay Mineral's Borealis operation, while at Mascot's Nickel Plate Gold Mine "ore shots are on a 10 x 10 ft" pattern. Like a new edition of the World Book Almanac, these articles are overflowing with useful tidbits of technical data; but, they never mention why the particular blasting patterns were selected. A survey carried out during the Winter of 1988 at six surface gold mines in the western United States also failed to produce a satisfactory answer. The responses from mine planning engineers to the question "why is your blasting pattern X by Y", reduced to "we use X by Y here because we used X by Y at our last operation, and it worked ok." Certainly, with the available decades of experience and professional practice in blast holes design, rock fragmentation in surface mines has been thoroughly investigated. However, and this is the central issue, fragmentation of the rock is not the primary purpose of most rotary drill holes in surface gold mines. The Bureau of Mines is examining mineral deposits bearing strategic elements such as cobalt, for which the United States heavily relies on imports. The Turner-Albright volcanogenic sulfide deposit in southwestern Oregon is marginally economic based on its gold content and associated silver, copper, zinc, and cobalt values. Bureau research on the Turner-Albright deposit was performed (1) to evaluate domestic cobalt recovery as a byproduct of gold production from massive sulfide ores; (2) to develop an analogue of modern sea-floor polymetallic deposits to determine the economic potential of the deep-sea resources; and (3) to compile information on the geochemistry and genesis of the deposit that can aid in future onshore exploration. Cold was introduced as near micrometer-sized disseminations by exhalative hydrothermal fluids near sea-floor vent sites and by late influxes of mineralizing fluids into lower zones of brecciated sulfides and basaltic fragments. Cobalt is a substitutional element in pyrite that occurs in outlying halos around original vent sites. Mineralogic studies conducted with a scanning-electron microscope and an electron microprobe determined that none of the ore minerals are amenable to traditional beneficiation methods such as gravity and flotation. An experimental oxygen pressure-leaching procedure developed by the Bureau has proven successful in treating such complex ores.

By using physical and chemical means to increase the bulk density of newly broken coal freed from the mine face, the potential to improve coal mine productivity is significantly enhanced. It is estimated that by increasing bulk density, greater tonnages can be placed in fixed volume scoops and shuttles cars to improve production by as much as 10% to 20%. Such improved packaging to achieve new levels of volumetric efficiency might require only small and easy to implement changes to present downstream mining operations. Opportunities exist for improving broken coal bulk density from the moment of breakage, during transport across the continuous miner or loading machine, during discharge into the haulage unit, and after placement in the haulage unit. Physical/chemical methods for broken coal compaction in mobile, fixed volume units in underground operations are discussed.

The Arab community is formed by around twenty countries in Africa and Asia, linked basically by a common language-Arabic - and the same religion, the muslim. They jointly occupy around 12 million square kilometers with a total population of around 140 million people. Nevertheless, these nations differ widely in their geographic area and population. Thus, while Egypt has a territory of over a million square kilometers and a population of nearly 40 million people, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain have, among the three of them, less than 30, 000 square kilometers and a million inhabitants. The per capita income also vary greatly, depending on whether they are oil producing countries or not. Generally speaking, it can be said that these countries economies have been based on oil or agriculture and that in these last years, they have been making serious efforts to increase their degree of industrialization and have greatly improved their infrastructure. This trend has resulted in the development of the iron and steel industry, which is still in a stage of primary development.

After a brief consideration of the properties of zinc sulfide minerals, their flotation characteristics, and their reactions with thiol collectors, the literature on the activation of the minerals by cupric ion, their deactivation by cyanide, and their depression is reviewed in detail. The distinction between deactivation and depression is stressed. The contradictions in the published results and theories are discussed and attempts are made to resolve them. It is concluded that, whereas all aspects of the subject require further investigation, the study of depression is most likely to yield benefits in practice.

Zimbabwe The Republic of Zimbabwe is situated in south central Africa and north of the Tropic of Capricorn. The country is land-locked, bounded on the north by Zambia, on the south by the Republic of South Africa, on the east by Mozambique and on the southwest by Botswana. Nearly 400,000 sq km in area, Zimbabwe is bigger than both France and Spain and nearly three times the size of England. The outstanding physical feature is the central plateau, known as the highveld, which is about 650 km long and 80 km wide at an elevation of +1,200 m, and on which the Jena Mines is located. Because of its elevation and inland position, Zimbabwe's climate is temperate, generally drier and cooler than is normally expected in the tropics. Zimbabwe's population is in excess of 10 million. English is the official language, with Ndebele and Shona being the main ethnic languages. About one million people live in Greater Harare, the capital city. The basic unit of currency is the Zimbabwe dollar, which has depreciated substantially over the past few years. Currently (November, 1995), the exchange rate is $US 1.00 = $Zim 9.00, compared with $US 1 .OO = $Zim 2.50 in 1991. Project Area The Jena Mines Complex is situated in central Zimbabwe (Figure 1), in the Silobela area of the lower Gweru River valley. The mine site is 270 km from Harare by paved and gravel road. The Jena Mines property consists of a single rectangular (8 km by 5 km) shaped mining lease with an area of approximately 40 sq km (Figure 2). Annual average precipitation is 720 mm falling in the summer months between October and April. Mean daily maximum temperature is 24°C in October and mean minimum is 14°C in July. The southern parts of Zimbabwe have experienced drought conditions over the past four years which has affected water and power supplies. The countryside in the Jena area is generally low relief with a gentle slope to the northwest. The mine site topography is flat with an average elevation of 1,210 m. Zimbabwe Mining Industry Zimbabwe has a long mining tradition, particularly for gold. In the 1,200 years preceding European colonization, it is estimated that about 4,000 ancient mines produced between 600 and 800 tonnes of gold. Since the turn of the century more than 1,700 tonnes of gold have been produced. An excellent infrastructure has developed to support the mining industry. This includes a well- maintained system of paved roads, railway links to major mining areas, an electricity grid covering most of the country, and numerous industries manufacturing a wide range of mining supplies. Jena History The claims in the Jena Mines area are among the earliest registered in Zimbabwe. The gold potential was easily recognized because of extensive ancient (pre-European) workings. European trading beads from the 14th Century have been recovered from anthills in the mine area. Development of the Jena Mines commenced in 1898 and several mines have operated intermittently over the past 90 years. In terms of the technical problems of rib spalling in large mining height coal face, a long-distance advanced pre-grouting layer flexible reinforcement technology is proposed in this paper. Based on the mechanism and failure mode of rib spalling in the coal face, the mechanical properties of the aluminum plastic composite pipe were analyzed by using the tensile and compression experiment. The deformation and strength characteristics of “flexible pipe + grouting” specimens were studied by uniaxial compression test, splitting test, and shear test. The UDEC numerical simulation software was used to simulate the reinforcement effect of “flexible pipe + grouting” at different positions. Combined with the field application, the feasibility of long-distance advanced pre-grouting layer flexible reinforcement technology was verified. The test results show the following: The coal face has the characteristics of brittle and large deformation. The aluminum plastic composite pipe has the characteristics of good elongation and tensile strength, which can endure the large deformation of the coal face. The “flexible pipe + grouting” can improve the tensile and shear strength of coal. The UDEC numerical simulation analysis indicated that the grouting hole layout of “flexible pipe + grouting” has a significant difference in the reinforcement effect of the coal face. Compared with single row grouting reinforcement, the reinforcement effect of double row grouting holes 1.5 m and 3.0 m away from the roof is better. According to the field application, it is feasible to use aluminum plastic composite pipe as a flexible grouting pipe to reinforce coal seam with 80–100 m long-distance pre-grouting. Long-distance advanced pre-grouting layer flexible reinforcement technology can improve the daily production of coal and reduce the support cost of the coal face. As a new method of reinforcement, long-distance layered flexible reinforcement has a significant effect on the prevention and treatment of rib spalling in large mining height coal face.

Cyclic voltammetry and surface potential (photovoltage) measurements have been carried out on galena electrodes in sodium tetraborate solutions with added HC1 and NaOH to adjust the pH over the range 2 to 13. The first technique shows that the surface species formed on moderate anodic polarization and reduced on subsequent cathodic polarization are the same over the entire pH range. At anodic potentials, a soluble metal species and excess sulfur are formed; at cathodic potentials, sulfur is reduced to a soluble species. More importantly, excess surface sulfur is formed spontaneously under zero current conditions in alkaline solutions. This has been shown to occur on both polished surfaces and on virgin surfaces produced by in situ cleavage under the electrolyte. The photovoltage gives some insight into the charge and potential distribution at the galena surface. This is found to depend on past electrochemical history and the n- or p-type semiconducting character of the electrode and is interpreted in terms of changes in the surface stoichiometry that occur during reduction or oxidation. The effect of surface stoichiometry on subsequent xanthate interactions is discussed.

Soil next to a smelter abandoned about 100 years ago near Socorro, NM was found, by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), to contain high Pb concentrations. Detailed characterization of the soil by the New Mexico Bureau of Mines and Mineral Resources (Bureau) shows that the highest Pb concentration is in the clay-size fraction, although this fraction accounts for only 1 to 3 wt % of the soil. The depth of contamination, determined in areas relatively undisturbed since the smelter was abandoned, is no more than 76 mm (3 in.). Because of the soil's alkalinity, the Pb mobility is dominated by the movement of Pb-bearing particles, as opposed to chemical transport in solution.

A detailed strata-mechanics investigation and examination was carried out in the E2 Panel (ML-II/7) of the XVI Bottom coal seam, which is located in the Moonidih Colliery of B.C.C.L., Jharia coalfield, India. Above this panel, the XVI Top coal seam was previously worked out by a longwall panel. Based on intensive field study and on experiments in a number of longwall panels located within various Indian coal mines, the actual behavior of the coal roof strata was evaluated and new strata-mechanics concepts around the longwall panels were developed. These concepts resulted in new methodologies concerning the behavior of roof rocks, caving characteristics, etc. within longwall panels and in the area of strata mechanics. Based on these new strata-mechanics concepts, a very simple, but realistic, model was developed to determine the optimum capacity of the powered supports. This model considered the combined loads resulting from the detachment of strata and composite layer blocks from the face and, also, loads due to the deflection of strata and composite layers situated above the detached roof rockmass. This formula, along with the other related formulas by the author, prompted the determination of the optimum capacity requirement for the powered supports to be used in the XVI Bottom coal seam, located under the worked out area. This new concept in strata mechanics and capacity requirements of the powered supports in a longwall face may be an aid to Mining Engineers.

Maintenance of a constant load setting throughout longwall support units and selection of the proper initial bearing capacity depending on the type of roof strata are the basic factors that ensure good performance of roof support in a longwall. These requirements can only be met by hydraulic support. The greatest advantage of hydraulic support is achieved when uniform pressure is imposed on the roof throughout the length of the longwall. Such support, however, is provided only if each of the support units acts with the same force against the roof, i.e., has the same setting load. In such cases, the roof behaves like a uniform plate without bending and shearing stresses, thereby ensuring an undisturbed structure. Without a positive set value system, achieving an equal setting load for all units of the longwall support is impossible. Due to alterations of the feed line pressure of support units as well as some reasons related to man's psychology, operators extend the height at different setting loads. This produces nonuniform roof stress, and disturbs the structure. Consequently, the roof usually cracks. The author has developed a positive set value system, which is described in this Technical Note. Selection of the setting load Two pressure values in the feed lines are usually applied in longwall hydraulic systems. Lightweight support is fed by 25 MPa (250 bar) liquid, while heavy duty units receive a nominal pressure of 31.5 MPa (315 bar). Such pressure is required not only for the props but also to power the adjust¬ment jacks and the advancing ram. If the feed pressure is too low, there will be difficulty in shifting the unit despite the inversion system of the advancing rams. On the other hand, for many roof types, the feed pressure often appears to be too high when applied as the setting load pressure. An excessive setting load acts too strongly against the roof, crushing weak strata close to the roof. The author has recognized a case where an excessive setting load destroyed not only the nearby roof strata but also the strata above a 2-m (6.6-ft) sandstone layer. In addition, an excessive setting load relieves the side¬walls, increasing the resistance when using cutting machines. As a result, the yield of coarse coal is diminished, and increased fines dominate in the final product, lowering its economic value. As indicated, selection of the proper setting load, depend¬ing on the mining and geological conditions of the extracted seam, is extremely important. In some mines, measures applied to prevent disturbances include reduction of the feed line pressure by adjusting the feed pump valve. The disadvantage accompanying reduced feed line pressure is more difficult operation in advancing the ram. Due to the reduced feed line pressure, the force of the advancing ram is much lower than the designed value. Other designs suggest using a third feed line. However, installation of supplementary valves on the support units is required, a time-consuming and expensive procedure. The disadvantages of the powered supports are eliminated by a system designed by the author. So far, such a method of setting load control has not been used in any type of support. Setting load control unit The designed positive valve set for prop loading and the setting load control correspond to existing control systems for hydraulic powered support. The layout of the unit connected to the hydraulic prop control is presented in Fig. 1. The unit is marked LIDS. It incorporates three valves that may operate separately or connected. Valve A automatically opens and closes with liquid flow in the prop feed circuit. The valve is opened when the canopy touches the roof and closed when the support unit is withdrawn. Valve B serves as the setting load control. Valve C automatically opens and closes the flow in the line connecting the under-piston space of E to the prop F with the separator G. The valve block of each support prop is marked BZ. The UDS unit is connected by the hydraulic lines to the F prop control circuit. A valve is connected by H to pressure line J and by K to the G separator. In the UDS-3 version, line L is connected to M, linking the over-piston space of F prop with the G separator. Valve B is linked with valve A by a connector; it is also connected to the under-piston space E of prop F by line P. Valve C is fixed between lines K and P, connecting space E of prop F with the separator G. When setting the support, the liquid flows from line J through separator G, the BZ valve, and valve C to the space E of prop F. When reaching the roof with the canopy, valve A is opened and C closes. In this way it is impossible for the operator to cause the liquid pressure in space E of prop F to reach the level of line J. The prop pressure is set by valve B of the UDS unit. When withdrawing the support, valve C is automatically opened and A closed. Three UDS units have been fabricated and are designated

FOREWORD This paper is based on the authors' experience gained in the environmental assessment of major uranium projects in the former Department of Science and the Environment and Department of Home Affairs and Environment of the Australian Government. The views expressed in the paper are those of the authors alone and not the Australian Government or Dames & Moore. INTRODUCTION Uranium has been mined in Australia since 1954. A number of small scale mining and milling operations were active in the Northern Territory, in South Australia and in Queensland in the late fifties and early sixties. However, in the late sixties there was an increase in exploration activities in the expectation of an upsurge in world demand for uranium Substantial new resources were delineated in the Northern Territory, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. The most significant deposits were located in the Northern Territory, in what is called the Alligator Rivers Region located approximately 200 km east of Darwin. The Region is in the latitude of 13° South and thus lies within the Australian tropics (Figure 1). It consists of approximately 2.3 million hectares of natural wilderness containing much spectacular and attractive scenery. The area is noted for its abundant wildlife, particularly the waterbirds that gather on the flood-plains. Much of the vegetation is diverse and interesting. The Aboriginal population still maintains elements of the traditional way of life, and the spectacular Arnhem Land escarpment contains many of the best surviving examples of Aboriginal rock art. Numerous rich archaeological sites provide evidence of continuous human habitation for tens of thousands of years. Climatically, the Region is of the tropical monsoon type with a dry season from may to September and a "wet" from November to March. High intensity short period rainfall is characteristic, and the average annual precipitation is in the order of 1 350 mm. The monthly mean temperature ranges from 25° to 30°C throughout the year. The development of regulatory controls on uranium mining in the Alligator Rivers Region has been affected by the political status of the Northern Territory. While Australia is a federation, established as an independent self-governing country in 1901, it was not until 1978 that the Northern Territory became to any real extent self-governing. Prior to 1978, the Territory was administered through a special department of the Commonwealth (ie. the Federal Government). Under the Northern Territory (Self Government) Act 1978, administrative powers similar to those possessed by the Governments of the six founding Australian states were provided to the Territory Government. However, the Commonwealth government did not transfer to the Territory all such powers and functions, and in particular there has been, since 1978, a dual role for the Commonwealth and Territory Governments in the regulation of uranium development. Details of this role are provided later in this paper. RANGER URANIUM INQUIRY By 1973, major deposits had been discovered in the Alligator Rivers Region at Nabarlek, Ranger, Koongarra and Jabiluka. The estimated reserves and mine life expectancy of these deposits are given in Table I. Other radioactive anomalies have also been identified in the area but, as yet, they have not been delineated or evaluated. [ ] In 1974, an agreement was signed between the Commonwealth Government and Peko Mines Limited and the Electrolytic Zinc Company of Australia Limited for the joint development of the Ranger deposit. In July 1975, the Government announced a Commission of Inquiry under the provisions of the Commonwealth Environment Protection (Impact of Proposals) Act 1974, into the proposed Ranger development. The inquiry was known as the Ranger Uranium Environmental Inquiry or more commonly, the Fox Inquiry after the presiding Commissioner, Mr Justice Fox.

Exploration by Anaconda Minerals Co. in the Rico area from 1978 through 1983 resulted in dis¬covery of the Silver Creek molybdenum deposit. The drill-indicated resource is 40 Mt (44 million st) of 0.31% Mo, and projections suggest that the deposit may exceed 182 Mt (200 million st). No source intrusion has been intersected by drilling, but its presence is sugested by intramineral silicic alkali-alaskite porphyry dikes observed at the surface and in drill holes. Age dates and fluid inclusion studies indicate that the deposit was formed 5.2 ± 0.2 m.y. ago and that more than 1200 (3937 ft) of cover has since been removed by erosion. The deposit is hosted by Precambrian quartzite and greenstone, and Paleozoic sediments. Three prominent faults intersect in the vicinity of the molybdenum deposit, and one of these, the Last Chance fault, strongly influenced the shape and location of the deposit. The juxtaposition of host rocks across the Last Chance fault reflects significant offset spanning at least three different periods. Wallrock alteration associated with the deposit includes potassic, phyllic, and propylitic zones in noncalcareous rocks and garnet and anhydrite-diopside zones in the carbonates. All +0.2% Mo mineralization is within the potassic and garnet zones. Premineral faults that intersect the deposit contain the only surface molybdenum, tungsten, and fluorine anomalies. Dispersion halos of the indicator elements were defined by drilling in the discovery phase of exploration, and are particularly well-developed in the hanging wall of the Last Chance fault.

Estimations have been made of the tonnage of raw ores and coal treated by various beneficiation processes. The amount treated by gravity concentration is substantially greater than that treated by flotation, with coal representing the bulk of the material treated by gravity means. A discussion is given of the trends and anticipated improvements in gravity methods. Except for the concentration of iron ores, magnetic and elec- trostatic separation processes find their greatest use in the beneficiation of non-sulfide ores. Exciting new developments in magnetic materials and separation process (and, to a lesser extent, in the electrostatic process) indicate a substantial increase in the application of such processes to ores and a broad variety of non-ore uses.
