The 1972 discovery of the Howards Pass lead-zinc deposit was the product of systematic regional geochemical surveys used to evaluate conceptual geological models for the metal-rich black shales of the Selwyn Basin. Motivation of personnel involved in all aspects of work was as critical a factor to the success as the existing corporate attitudes and infrastructure. Exploration programs were flexible but maintained a focus only on targets of sufficient economic potential to support operations in remote locations. Direct costs for the programs that lead to the discovery were in the order of $500,000 (Canadian 1972). Geological reserves today stand at over 500 Mt (511 million st) of 7% combined lead-zinc, containing a higher grade zone of nearly 10 Mt (11 million st) of 16% combined lead-zinc.

A procedure has been developed for the removal of zinc from acid solutions containing aluminum, silicon, calcium, magnesium, sodium, potassium and manganese ions and high concentrations of chloride ions. The first step of the procedure involves the precipitation of aluminum and silicon at pH 4.2. The second step, the removal of the zinc as zinc oxide, was studied in detail to get in- sight into the formation of oxychlorides. A diagram was developed giving the conditions at 75O C under which the formation of oxychlorides is avoided. Under optimal conditions a zinc oxide with less than 0.5 weight percent of chloride can be produced from 11 - 16 g/l chloride solutions.

The purpose of this paper is to attest the effectiveness of conditional simulation technique's for determining the principal pre-mining control parameters during mine planning. These parameters include: determining the selective mining unit size, the optimum pre-mining grid spacing and the number of mining faces to be used. The research work was developed in an iron ore deposit located in the Minas Gerais State, Brazil. Phosphorus was considered the master control variable for the research work. This paper provides the structural analysis (variography) , a description of the steps the were taken for setting up the numerical model, the kriging studies which were applied to the numerical model and the final optimum grid spacing, block size and number of mining faces.

NIOSH has developed an automated PC-based seismic event (induced earthquake) monitoring, system for use in mine ground control studies. The distribution and coordination of data acquisition and processing functions across a local area network is a central feature of the system. Mine-wide installations utilize multiple, autonomous seismic networks located both underground and on the surface. Seismic event locations, magnitude estimates, and other processed data are distributed for display and analysis on network nodes both underground and in the offices of mine engineers and managers. This paper describes the system's design philosophy, hardware and software components, examples of installations, and a few observational results.

The lithium review did not arrive in time for publication in the June issue The estimated consumption of lithium minerals as raw materials to the glass, ceramic and metallurgical industries in 1992 was 85.5 kt (94,200 st). That equates to about 12 kt (13,200 st) of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE). An additional 150 kt to 200 kt (165,000 to 220,000 st), or 7.5 kt to 10 kt (8200 to 1100 st LCE), were used in the production of lithium chemicals. The 1992 consumption represents an overall decrease of 3.5 kt (3800 st), or 500 t (550 st) LCE, from 1991. This was a direct result of a worldwide reduction in glass demand due to the economic recession. There are three major producers of lithium minerals. Gwalia Consolidated Ltd. (formerly Lithium Australia Ltd.) in Western Australia and Tantalum Mining Corp. (Tanco) in Manitoba, Canada, both produce spodumene ore. Bikita Minerals, in Zimbabwe, is the largest producer of petalite. Bikita also has the capacity to produce small volumes of spodumene concentrate. The Cyprus Foote spodumene operation at Kings Mountain, NC, ceased production in 1992. It once produced about 2 kt/a (2200 stpy) of "high iron spodumene" for uses other than in the manufacture of lithium chemicals. The lithium products of the major producers are shown in Table 1. The current resources of 13 Mt (14.3 million st) of LCE in the western world will supply demand for more than 50 years.

Shotcrete is widely accepted as an indispensable form of ground control around the world. Other Surface Support Liners such as mesh have been around as long as shotcrete while other Thin Support Liners (TSLs) have been introduced in recent decades. TSLs, however, have yet to replace shotcrete in many applications believed to be “perfect” for them. On the other hand, some recently introduced technologies may be on the brink of meeting most surface rock support requirements economically and safely. This paper will discuss rockfall statistics, small rockfall prevention and compare different surface support liners such as mesh, shotcrete and TSLs. Additionally, a shaft sinking TSL application example will be presented.

Curved pulp lifters can provide improved discharge performance from SAG mills, especially for the coarser fraction of rocks in the discharge. They also can provide improved wear life of the pulp lifter, especially the base of the pulp lifter and diversion cone, over comparable straight radial pulp lifters. Current experience with curved pulp lifters and associated grates is covered including design issues and discharge performance for both the slurry and rock components of the discharge.

The West Side CSO Tunnel, Pump Station & Pipeline Project is currently beginning construction along the downtown waterfront of Portland, Oregon. This4.3 meter diameter, 5,500 meter-long soft ground tunnel will be driven along the westbank of the Willamette River adjacent to buildings and utilities and several major pile-supported bridges. High groundwater pressure, extended lengths of gravel to cobble-size alluvium, and the need to control ground loss and surface settlements were key considerations in the selection of slurry tunnel boring machines for the project This paper presents an overview of the numerical modeling that was performed during design to estimate the strains and additional loads in the pile-supported structures and to assess the efficiency of proposed mitigation measures.

The University of Kentucky Mine Ventilation Manager (UKMVM) is a system that contains Level Five knowledge bases and comprises an expert mine ventilation management system. The package uses production rule language (PRL) to interpret data monitored from sensors, e.g., for airflow, temperature, and concentration of gases, in an underground mining environment. Activated from the PRL knowledge bases are Pascal subprograms which (1) organize the monitored data to set up emergency consultations, (2) display graphic representations of a mine's ventilation network with the latest sensor readings, (3) provide interactive updating of mine ventilation parameters, e.g., resistance changes, revised flow requirements, and new regulator and fan settings. Also activated from these knowledge bases are programs which (1) monitor airflow, temperature and gas concentrations from a physical mine ventilation model and (2) adjust regulator openings and fan rpm's. Thus, as an expert system the UKMVM not only presents advisory consultations for underground environmental emergencies, but also serves as an interface between the monitoring and responsive control aspects in the continuous maintenance of normal mine ventilation.

Cement raw materials used in southern California and Arizona cement plants occur in a wide variety of geologic environments. Limestone, the primary material making up 75-80% of the raw materials mix used in cement manufacture, is mined solely from Paleozoic Era deposits. During this time, 570-245 million years ago, vastly more limestone was formed in California and Arizona than at any other time (continent was in southern latitudes). The general geology of each limestone deposit associated with the eight southern California and two Arizona cement plants will be reviewed. Many of these deposits are geologically complex, having been subjected to Mesozoic deformation, metamorphism and instrusive events, along with Cenozoic uplift and deformation. All of the cement plants in this region require the use of secondary additives in order to meet the chemical requirements for cement. The kinds of additives vary greatly, depending upon the chemistry of the limestone deposit, cement specifications, and the cement manufacturing process. In some cases, clay deposits with suitable chemistry on or near the limestone sources are utilized. Where alkali limitations or need for alumina-rich materials exist, then specialty clay deposits are used. Iron-rich sources in the region include iron ore deposits and slag or mill scale from local steel mills. The geologic setting and location of these additives, along with gypsum and silica-rich deposits presently in use, will be mentioned.

The Olympic Dam deposit was discovered in July 1975 with the intersection of 38 m (125 ft) of 1.05% copper in diamond drill hole RD 1. A further eight holes were drilled with only marginal encouragement to November 1976 when RD 10 cored 170 m (558 ft) at 2.12% copper and an economic discovery was confirmed. The discovery of Olympic Dam is an excellent example of the application of broad-scale scientifically based conceptual studies to area selection combined with the backing of an exploration management willing to support its exploration scientists in testing their ideas with stratigraphic drilling. It also illustrates the persistence required in mineral exploration. The project began in 1969-1972 with the development of a conceptual model for the formation of sediment-hosted copper deposits. This model suggested that the alteration of continental-type basaltic rocks could release copper into solution from which it could be concentrated in favorable stratigraphic positions. In mid-1972, this concept was applied to a review of the Proterozoic and Lower Paleozoic rocks in South Australia aimed at defining targets for stratigraphic copper deposits.

INTRODUCTION Production of chrysotile asbestos from the northern Appalachians has been going on for 100 years and, on the basis of known reserves and the present rates of mining, appears assured of continued production for at least another 25 to 30 years. In spite of this, mining companies and government agencies are showing an increasing interest in exploring for chrysotile asbestos throughout this region and elsewhere in the world, implying that increases in the rate of consumption are envisioned. This chapter describes the geologic and tectonic settings surrounding these important chrysotile deposits, with emphasis on those in southern Quebec that yield about 90% of the total production from the northern Appala- chians. Detailed descriptions of a few individual deposits are also given, along with exploration guidelines aimed at facilitating the discovery of additional chrysotile deposits. One section of this chapter deals with the origin and mode of formation of the chrysotile deposits in the light of modern day concepts of plate tectonics. The objectives of this chapter are to give a brief description of the geologic and tectonic settings of the ultramafic rocks in which the numerous chrysotile deposits of the northern Appalachians are found; to describe a few of the individual deposits; to give a few exploration guidelines for those interested in exploring for new asbestos deposits in similar geologic environments; and to propose a new model for asbestos genesis in light of the recently developed theories of global tectonics. As this chapter is based almost entirely on field and laboratory observations, rather than on the study of experimental laboratory models, most of our deductions and suggestions are empirical in nature and may be interpreted in more than one way. The interpretations we have selected seem to offer, we feel, the best explanation of observed geological phenomena (Lamarche and Wicks, 1975). This region had a production capability in 1979 of close to p.5 Mt of chrysotile asbestos with 92% of this tonnage being derived from the deposits of the Eastern Townships of Quebec. With known resources, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fibers, this production capability seems assured for the next few decades. In spite of all known reserves of chrysotile asbestos, which now stand at between 36 and 40 Mt of fiber in this region alone, mining companies and government agencies are still showing a good deal of interest in exploring for new sources throughout the world. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The asbestos deposits at Baie Verte in eastern Newfoundland, Thetford Mines, Black Lake, Asbestos in southern Quebec, and Belvidere Mountain in Vermont, all occur in partly serpentinized ultramafic rocks that are part of the Lower Paleozoic ophiolite complexes of the northern Appalachians [Cady, Albee, Chidester, 1963, Chidester, Albee, Cady, 1978, Lamarche, 1972,1973, Laurent, 1973,1975, Williams, Hibbard, Bursnall, 1977, Norman and Strong, 1975). The deposits to the northeast of Thetford Mines, on the other hand, are found in a more highly serpentinized ultramafic body known as the Pennington dike, whose spatial, genetic, and chronological links with the ophiolite masses proper have not as yet been adequately resolved. Arafertil's oxidized ore presents barite grades that oscillate between 5 and 12%. The barite separation plays a major role in the production of apatite concentrates for the manufacturing of phosphate fertilizers. The selectivity, via flotation, in the system barite-apatite is inherently difficult due to the similarity of the physical/chemical characteristics of these minerals. The evaluation of the relevant aspects of this separation was performed based on the determinations of the electrical surface charge of barite and apatite, the abstraction isotherms of cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate and fatty acids soaps for barite and apatite, microflotation in a modified Hallimond tube, and flotation tests in a batch column. The results showed that the adsorption of cetyl- stearyl sodium sulfate occurs preferentially onto barite, in comparison with apatite. On the other hand, the rice bran oil soap presents similar adsorption levels onto both barite and apatite. The cetyl-stearyl sodium sulfate was selective as a barite collector in the presence of apatite, a fact that was not observed in the case of rice bran oil soap.

Solution of most engineering problems requires, in addition to vast numerical calculations, substantial use of practical judgement and expertise. With advances in applied mathematics and computer technology, the numerical aspects of problem solution have reached a considerable level of maturity. However, it is only recently that approaches like the expert systems methodology have been developed to incorporate the judgemental aspects as well. For rapid development and prototying of expert systems, expert system building tools or "shells" have become widely available. For the expert system developer, identification of the key characteristics of the problem domain and selection of the right expert system tool are of crucial importance. In this paper, the important attributes required in an expert system shell for use in the development of a mine ventilation planning expert system are discussed. These attributes are general in that most engineering problems in mining would have these requirements. Also, the results of an exercise undertaken to evaluate commercially available shells for application to mining engineering problems are presented.

As coal mines age and become more developed, ventilation modeling becomes more important for the planning and continued operation of the system. Numerous studies have been performed and presented that address the collection of data and measurement of airway friction factor and resistance per unit length values. However, a quantitative analysis of the resistance for stoppings in coal mines for different construction materials and methodologies has not been adequately addressed. In order to develop an accurate/realistic ventilation model both airway resistances and stopping resistance values need to be determined. Over the course of the past two decades Mine Ventilation Services, Inc (MVS) has measured the resistance of stoppings of various construction types in mines throughout the world. An analysis of this data is presented in this paper along with a discussion of measurement methodology.

Annually, the US coal industry generates and must dispose of over 200 million st (180 million t) of coal refuse, expanding a major environmental problem. The purpose of this research was to investigate the feasibility of utilizing coal refuse as an aggregate in concrete. This paper reports on findings of the initial phases of a project to determine the viability of replacing traditional concrete blocks with refuse blocks for use in ventilation stoppings in underground mines. Refuse, collected from three active preparation plants in eastern Kentucky, was used as the primary as aggregate in the preparation of concrete cylinder. Stress-strain analyses on the refuse cylinders yielded compressive strengths of from 59% to 77 % of the control-group strengths. Low variability within the groups was found while significant differences between the groups existed. On-going determinations of the effects of weathering on the refuse cylinders is being conducted and will be completed in early 1995. The research results are favorable for the future direction of the overall project objectives.

In its 110-year history as a mining camp, the Boleo copper district of Baja California has weathered significant changes in its operation, ownership, and profitability, despite an inhospitable environment and unique ore body. For some 65 years, under the operation of Compagnie Boleo, the area ranked as the second largest copper producing district in Mexico, with over 560 km of underground workings. As its ore grade-and profitability-declined, operations continued sporadically and with varying degrees of success. Today, operations at Boleo are maintained -despite the economics -while work is underway to devise a viable metallurgical process. Lab tests on a hydrometallurgical method look encouraging and, though this may end the district's days as a mining camp, the feasibility of the process may result in an 18-kt/d full-scale operation.

It is difficult to simulate properly the vibratory transport. One does not know how to describe the influence of a bulk material layer on the transporting trough. There are few approaches, but none is satisfactory enough. Author proposes to apply a model of a dynamic dumper which simulates periodical collisions between material and the trough, when they are coming to the contact after the free flight of material above the trough. Computer calculates average speed of transported material and handling output as well. When the quantity of material on the trough is known, then the force of the dynamic dumper could be calculated. This force together with the exciting force of the vibrator are introduced into equations describing the model of a mutti- mass conveyor. The basic goal of simulation is to find the required exciting force and the power of an electromagnetic vibrator. it is possible to find optimal data of designed elements of vibratory conveyors as well.

Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained.

Rather than reiterate what is well known about the flotation of the non-sulfide minerals, emphasis has been placed on those separations which are not so effective. These difficult separations are largely connected with problems of selectivity in the flotation of the base metal oxides, the other slightly soluble minerals, the insoluble oxides and the naturally floatable minerals. The paper discusses possible methods of improving selectivity between similar species and of improving selectivity against the gangue minerals.
