The success of most attempts to evaluate gold orebodies depends largely on the reliability and availability of representative sampling data and the accuracy of geological interpretation. An accurate prediction of the continuity of geology is paramount to a reliable prediction of gold reserves. Many of the problems encountered in gold mine evaluation and planning revolve around the difficulties in interpreting complex geology from sparse drilling data and the eagerness of mine financiers and promoters to start mining in order to derive an early cash flow. Following a program of sampling, geophysics, mapping and geological interpretation, a conceptual orebody model evolves in the minds of those working on the project. It is this model which is used typically in ore reserve computations and mine planning. Computer modelling techniques to represent and evaluate the conceptual model are now available. The main advantages of using computer modelling methods lie in being able to rapidly evaluate, modify and quantify the conceptual orebody model. Ore zones or domains can be recognised and defined both from geology and sampling results. Once these domains are defined as a series of boundaries, they may be modelled as two dimensional grid surfaces or as wire-framed three dimensional geometries, depending on the complexity of the orebody. It is the definition of these domains which provides the sound geological basis for reserves computation. To estimate reserves it is necessary to determine both volume of ore and grade of ore. Recently Lurgi has succesfully commissioned Peru's first direct reduction rotary kiln at SIDERPERU?s Chimbote works. The order included comprehensive engineering services and supply of special equipment to modify three existing cement kilns according to the SL/RN process. The kilns were cut to 62m length and installed with a slope of 2.5%. A new heating system, including shell burners, was supplied and inlet and outlet ends of the kilns completely renewed. Figure 1 shows the kilns after modification.

Considerable potential for metallic mineral resources in the lower Proterozoic rock of the Lake Superior region exists (Mudrey and Kalliokoski, in press). Most of the identified resources occur within a 2.0- to 1.9-b.y.-old lithotectonic assemblage characterized by extensive sedimentary strata in the north and thick volcanic se- quences in the south, all deposited on a two-terrane, composite basement of Archean age (DeMattis, 1989). Since the late 1960s, measured resources of nearly 90 Mt (100 million st) of typical volcanogenic massive sulfide at eight localities in Wisconsin have been discovered. The largest of these, near Crandon, contains about 61 Mt (67 million st) of ore averaging 5.6% zinc, 1.1 % copper, and 0.5% lead. Although none of these properties are in production, estimates by Mudrey (1978) suggest that Wisconsin could become a major contributor of newly mined zinc and copper in the United States. These discoveries and uranium and gold discoveries in the Canadian Precambrian are what have led to in- creased metallic mineral exploration throughout the northern half of Wisconsin (Fig. 1). In this chapter, we discuss the geology and legal framework in which the Proterozoic volcanogenic massive sulfide deposits were found. Exploration activities for other metals have generally been negative, and have been background noise for the legislative activities related to the massive sulfide discoveries. Uranium exploration has been consistently negative, although several different environments have been assessed. Other metal discoveries. such as titanium/vanadium, have been subeconomic.

Asking the question, “What do the world’s leading corporations and cutting-edge practitioners of sustainability put forth to guide a given mine site for planning and action toward ‘sustainability’?”, this paper explores the spectrum of methodologies and mindsets in available literature, then constructs an example for the large near-closure facility at Kennecott Utah Copper. Values, opportunities and constraints spring from physical, unutilized byproducts, from critical ecosystems and wildlife populations, from location relative to those ecosystems and proximate communities, and from the political will to perform adequate feasibility investigations. Patience, determination and thoroughness are imperative. Identifying most productive and, simultaneously, most protective and restorative, practical methods to approach ‘sustainability’ has become a central mission of industry and business, worldwide. A survey of recent international initiatives finds no single approach that establishes either a readily adaptable methodology or an appropriate set of ‘attention’ points, or agenda, to guide individual mining operations at specific locations toward the elusive but essential goal of ‘sustainable’ mining. Untying this convoluted knot of contending factors requires willingness to recognize and work within ecological constraints for community long-term needs. Occasionally, the task requires the sword of Alexander the Great. Through integration that is unflinchingly honest ethically, culturally, economically, ecologically and scientifically, fully cognizant of place and community at whatever scales are of greatest significance, and integrative of both problem-response and opportunity, we may envision a mineral extraction and beneficiation future that achieves the best, most nearly sustainable, results possible. Industrial ecology (IE), with its clear emphasis on community, ecosystems, and sustainable economic stimulation, presents a sufficiently broad and adaptable discipline to facilitate planning and management toward sustainable mining. The creation of sustainable jobs encapsulates IE’s analogy to the niche survival strategies of organisms in nature. Open to common-sense recognition of faults and opportunities at appropriate scales, IE is less a discipline or prescribed methodology than a mindset, willing to be rigorously scientific when science is imperative, but also willing to exercise “art” when creativity or community engagement are needed. IE is also capable of future-looking compassion for peoples and nature. Looking beyond what has occurred to date, the case of Kennecott Utah Copper provides ample illustration of possibilities for community economic development, environmental management, and significant initiatives beneficial at regional and planetary scales, to become recognizable as deserving of the label, ‘sustainable.’ Through what this researcher terms “whole mine, whole region, whole planet” thinking, strategies become visible and subject to serious consideration, presenting a path to best possible accomplishment in mining. Constituting a maximal broadening of mining’s “traditional” scope, the integrative approach proposed here is the ‘paradigm shift’ being made by many other industries around the world. In aggregate, these steps are the only hope for avoidance of environmental, social and economic risks that threaten to curtail resource development and impair mining companies’ ‘social license to operate.’

It is widely accepted that particles stabilize flotation froths and that stable froths result in improved flotation performance. Predicting the effect of particle addition on froth stability is, however, challenging. Furthermore, there is currently no technique that allows the prediction of the effect of different flotation reagents on froth stability, without carrying out froth stability experiments.

The recent study by R. M. Hays(l) prompted the study summarized in this paper. In his Interesting paper, Mr. Hays shows fine results to be attainable by a relatively complex flowsheet on a semi-taconite, a manifestly difficult ore to treat. We obtained a semi -taconite from Minnesota, and treated this sample by wet magnetic separation alone. The device in which the separation was accomplished is the standard pilot-plant, laboratory separator in use at Magnetic Engineering Associates' laboratory (MEA) in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It consists of a cylindrical space which can be magnetized by turning on the magnet of the separator. In this cylindrical space, there is a canister which provides the special configuration of the magnetic field and magnetic field gradients that MEA considers to be required. The ore pulp is made to flow through the canister while the current is on. A portion of the pulp is retained in the canister, and the rest is evolved as a non-magnetic fraction. The laboratory device is cyclic, but it accurately predicts the results obtainable by an Industrial unit of either cyclic or continuous type (moving matrix). The ore tested was 99.5°%o -325 mesh, and approximately 75% -500 mesh. The concentrate from this ore was, therefore, eminently suitable for pelletizing. In passing the ore through the magnet, we had the choice of repeatedly passing the concentrate from the first step through the operation, or of repeatedly passing the non-magnetics. "Ferromanganese crusts contain hydrous Mn and Fe oxides as main metal compounds together with some economically interesting minor elements such as Co, Ni, Ti and Cu and trace metals such as Mo, W, Nb, Te, Ga, Pt, and REEs. Some of these metals or semimetals have a great future potential as innovative high-technology constituents. All of them are highly enriched in the crusts compared to seawater composition.The Mn in the crusts mainly originates from the O2 - minimum zone in the oceanic water column. The agent for Mn2+ oxidation is dissolved oxygen, transported upwards from colder deep water layers by turbulent eddy diffusion. The Mn itself descends from surface waters and is carried down to the O2-minimum zone by fecal pellet transport. In contrast, Fe is mainly supplied from carbonate dissolution of planktonic skeletons in the water column. These relationships result in the fact that the oceanic water depth strongly controls the metal composition of ferromanganese crusts: the Mn - group metals are more enriched in shallower water, whereas the concentration of the Fe - group metals increase with water depth. The REEs play a very important role with regard to the trace metal composition of the crusts: their concentrations increase with water depth mainly controlled by a decreasing Mn/Fe ratio.In seawater, REEs occur as carbonate complexes; preferably, the light rare earth elements (LREEs) form REECO3 +(aq) and the heavy Rare Earth Elements (HREEs) REE(CO3)2 (aq) complexes. The REEs are transition metals, their 6s orbital of the outermost shell is filled before the filling of lower 4f electron shells is completed, thus the configuration of the valence electrons is similar in all the REEs, and all REEs exhibit similar chemical behavior and exist, dominantly, as 3+ cations. The ionic radius decreases progressively from La3+ (1.18 Å) to Lu3+ (0.97 Å), this phenomenon is called "lanthanide contraction". Due to the fact that REEs in seawater form cationic and anionic carbonate complexes, the two main hydrogenetic constituents, hydrous !-MnO2 and Fe-oxyhydroxide, fractionate the group of REEs by surface absorption processes. According to the pHZPC-concept the ?- MnO2 phase has an electronegative surface, and Fe-oxyhydroxide a slightly positive surface charge at seawater pH. These relationships are the main reason for the observed REEs fractionation."

Work on the design of Kelex 100 was initiated several years ago at the Research Laboratories of Ashland Chemical Company. The effort was specifically directed toward the synthesis of an organic molecule which would strongly and selectively chelate copper ions in acidic solutions and form an oil soluble complex which would be stable in contact with an aqueous phase having a pH of approximately one. This publication describes efforts to establish data which could be used to estimate the economic utility of the new reagent. For helping to accomplish these ends, the author wishes to acknowledge the assistance of Mr. A. V. Henrickson of Hazen Research, Inc. for gathering a portion of the data presented here and to thank the copper companies who supplied leach solutions for studies described in this paper.

During several years of operation in Europe, South Africa and other locations, the Tri-Flo process has demonstrated substantial improvements in dense-medium dynamic-separation systems. The reasons for this improvement are: • a high-sharpness separation due to the multistage system and the application of new concepts in the design of the regeneration circuit and in the control of the medium Theology, and • the possibility of performing two cuts at different densities using a single separation device and a single regeneration circuit. This paper discusses the above points in detail with particular reference to the multistage technology (based on the circuit analysis theory) and to the control of the medium rheology (based on recent work in the modeling and simulation of the rheological behavior of dense suspensions). Concerning the multidensity separation, information is given on the new three-stage separator where the high-density separation is performed by the first stage and the low-density separation is performed by the second and third stages. This configuration (already realized in two operating plants) was selected because no particular sharpness was required at the high-density separation, while high sharpness was required at the low-density separation. However, the configuration can be inverted or a fourth stage can be added (at very low additional cost) to provide two stages for each separating density. The importance of achieving a high sharpness separation is related to minerals (industrial minerals in particular) where the density difference of the phases to be separated is very low (as in processing of lithium ores, feldspar- and others). Information is provided on plants operating in South Africa and Canada, for the beneficiation of lithium minerals and on a plant under construction in Italy for the beneficiation of feldspar. Finally, the importance of making the separation at two densities is emphasized with particular reference to coal; i.e., producing a low-ash premium coal and recovering, in the middling, a by-product without losing heating value. Also, very important for some minerals is the production of a high-grade concentrate (at the first stage) suitable for sending directly to metallurgy (e.g., chromite ores) and the production of a low-grade concentrate that can be further treated. In this way, a higher overall recovery of the valuable mineral can be achieved, and, at the same time, a reduction of the treatment costs can be obtained. All of the above applications were once considered impossible.

Carbon addition in the oxide pelletizing process is a big concern at the Sidbec-Normines pelletizing plant since 1976. Laboratory pot-grate testing carried out before the initial start-up of the Port-Cartier plant indicated that the nominal pelletizing grate capacity could be increased by fifteen percent with a suitable carbon addition. Also an improved induration cycle offered the possibility of a significant energy reduction within the process with no adverse effect on pellet quality. A one month plant scale program duplicated the lab test results and confirmed the anticipated cost saving by using these techniques. Since March '80, Sidbec-Normines use coke addition as a current operation. This paper reviews briefly earlier laboratory and in-plant test work carried out to investigate the effects of adding carbon materials to the Fire Lake hematite concentrate, and presents operation techniques and plant results of carbon addition in the Port-Cartier pellet plant.

The measurement principle of the Coulter Counter for particle size analyses is described. The application of the Coulter Counter to cement particle content and size analysis and to the size distribution of clinker from standard grindability tests are described. Methods of calibration, sample preparation and data reduction are presented. The results of the analyses obtained are compared with characteristics associated with performance showing both concordance and non-concordance of test data., Future uses of the Coulter Counter for particle size analysis in research and plant control adaptations are indicated.

"In 2016, the estimated value of total nonfuel mineral production in the United States was $74.6 billion, a slight increase from the revised total of $73.4 billion in 2015 (Table 1). Increased construction activity spurred increased production of industrial minerals, especially those used in infrastructure and residential construction. Although starting the year relatively low, prices for several metals, especially for some of the precious metals, began to trend upward. Decreased production of most metals produced in the United States, however, contributed to an overall decline in the value of metal production.Several U.S. metal mines and processing facilities were idled or closed permanently in 2016, including iron ore mines in Michigan and Minnesota; three primary aluminum smelters in Indiana, Missouri and Washington; one secondary zinc smelter in North Carolina; a titanium sponge facility in Utah and titanium mineral operations in Virginia. In addition, in May, the weekly average rig count for oil and gas drilling reached its lowest level since the 1940s when that measurement was first recorded. The reduced drilling activity resulted in decreased production of some industrial mineral products used in the drilling sector. Trends in mineral-related sectors of the domestic economy declined or held steady, except in the manufacturing of nonmetallic mineral products and nonferrous metals excluding aluminum, which increased. Overall, mining trended downward as the result of significant declines in coal mining, oil and gas extraction and metal mining (Table 2). Discussion of mine production is frequently segmented according to the type of materials produced within the broad categories of metals and industrial minerals (also known as nonmetallic minerals). Industrial minerals can be further subdivided as construction aggregates and other industrial minerals. Metals tend to have higher unit values but very low production quantities compared with those of industrial minerals, which have higher production quantities but are lower-valued materials, such as crushed stone or construction sand and gravel. Therefore, for discussion and analysis of the performance of the nonfuel minerals industry, the value of production is used rather than the tonnage produced. "Located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, the Peñasquito operation is comprised of the Peñasco and Chile Colorado (Brecha Azul) deposits. Openpit mining (prestripping) began in 2010 and full production commenced during 2011. The openpit mines feed both a sulfide concentrator (mill) and a heap leach pad. The project is owned by Goldcorp Inc. Peñasquito is a poly metallic deposit with Au, Ag, Zn and Pb being recovered as payable metals.As a consequence of lower grade ores expected with advancing mine life, Peñasquito is facing a declining metal production profile. To maximize returns and asset value, plant modifications, including the addition of a carbon prefloat circuit and a pyrite leach circuit to improve recovery, are currently being undertaken. This carbon prefloat circuit will enable the recovery of precious and base metals from carbonaceous sediments. This material is currently being stockpiled. With the associated increase in complexity in the process circuit, the requirement of the ore control system to accurately predict ore feed characteristics is critical to maximizing metal recovery at the Peñasquito operation. The addition of the carbon prefloat circuit was also a key driver in allowing the Chile Colorado openpit to be developed.These conditions alongside Goldcorp’s drive to increase profitability and maximize net asset value has created challenges. These challenges are numerous and multifaceted. However, the ability to accurately route materials from the ore control system is critical to site success, and some of these challenges have been overcome by the adoption and implementation of a new ore control (OC) technology. Examples of these technological innovations in the ore control program are discussed in this article and include improvements in geomodeling, material routing and reconciliation. Successful implementation of these elements has led to significant improvements in selectivity, performance and data management, while reducing the variance between planning and execution, thus helping to drive overall improvement across the operation."

The Cyprus Thompson Creek Mine is located at 2,286m (7500 feet) elevation in the Central Idaho mountains, 61.16 kilometers (38 miles) southwest of Challis, Idaho off State Highway 75. The Thompson Creek molybdenum deposit lies near the eastern border of the late Cretaceous Idaho Batholith within a complexly deformed sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks. Molybdenum mineralization is contained in a composite biotite granodiorite-quartz monzonite stock considered to be genetically related to the Idaho Batholith intrusive event. The ore is being mined by open pit methods and delivered to the concentrator stockpile with an overland conveyor belt system. The concentrator is designed as a 22,680 metric tons (25,000 ton) per day plant at an average head grade of 0.1% Molybdenum.

The Apex Tunnel is part of the Southern Nevada Water Authority?s proposed Clark, Lincoln, and White Pine Counties Groundwater Development Project. The project is intended to develop unused Nevada groundwater for meeting the water needs of Southern Nevada and would involve over 322 km (200 mi) of water transmission facilities. The Apex Tunnel, as currently conceived by ongoing planning and environmental analyses, would extend 2804 m (9,200 ft) through a structurally complex terrain of Paleozoic carbonate rocks and younger basin fill deposits and will traverse both public and private lands. Several faults cross the tunnel study area, juxtaposing rocks of varying lithology and degree of folding, and creating intervals of differing rock conditions along the tunnel alignment. This paper discusses how the geotechnical program was developed to be flexible and allow for rapid implementation of revisions based on new knowledge that became available during program execution, resulting in more effective decision making and enhanced value from the geologic investigation during the planning phase of the project.

INTRODUCTION Practical experience in mines with known presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in Canada and elsewhere shows that a very high concentration builds up in an unventilated dead end heading. As Holaday et al1 observed, even a minimal air movement results in a drastic reduction in radon daughter concentration. It is therefore obvious that the main objective of radon daughter control in the working environment is to design the ventilation system providing an optimized flow of fresh air into the workplace, resulting in acceptable climatic conditions and achieving radon daughter concentrations resulting in exposures as low as reasonably achievable. BASIC OBJECTIVES Large mining companies, having extensive material resources and professional expertise, have utilized elaborate electrical modelling in the design of mine ventilation systems as early as 1950 (coal mining industry in Europe) and with the advance of computer modelling techniques, their utilization in ventilation systems design is on the increase. Unfortunately, these methods are usually not available to small mining companies and even the large companies might not achieve the fullest benefit from utilizing them, if proper limiting factors are not considered in the modelling. When an evaluation of a ventilation system of a mine is undertaken in literature, a measure of the amount of air supplied underground per one ton of ore mined is used as an indicator of the efficiency of the ventilation system. Yet, even the greatest amount of air forced into the mine might not result in an acceptable working environment if a proper distribution of this air into individual working places is not achieved. The volume and the age of the air are probably the two most important factors in achieving acceptable radon daughter concentrations in the workplace, but other factors also have to be considered. DIRECTOR MINE - ALCAN, NEWFOUNDLAND FLUORSPAR WORKS ST. LAWRENCE, NEWFOUNDLAND, CANADA Ventilation To illustrate the effects of the design of the ventilation system on the control of radon daughter concentration, let us review the gradual development of the ventilation system of this mine from the earlier years of its development up until its final years of operation. This mine, located near the community of St. Lawrence on the south coast of Burin Peninsula was developed in the late thirties and reached full production by 1942. Unfortunately as was customary at that time, the only source of ventilation was a natural draft. The mine was extremely wet, and no significant attention was initially given to possible health effects of dust. It was not until the mid-fifties, when a number of cases of silicosis had surfaced, that de Villiers and Windish2 observed a significant increase of lung cancer incidence among the miners in comparison to its incidence among the general population of Newfoundland. Suspicions regarding radiation as a cause of the lung cancer were expressed, but it was only in surveys taken in late 1959 and early 1960 that Windish3 and Little4 established the presence of radon daughters in the mine atmosphere in very high concentrations. Windish, de Villiers and Hurley suggested that the most likely source of the radon in the mine was the mine water which dissolved radon during its passage through the granitic country rock in the surrounding geological area. This conclusion was confirmed by analyses of water from various areas of the mine by the Atomic Energy Canada Limited laboratories. The radon values in the samples varied from 4,240 to 12,850 pCi/L5. Following the discovery of the presence of radon daughters in the mine, the company took speedy action to install mechanical ventilation for the mine. The system was not designed as a total unit, but fans were installed rather on a trial and error basis. The basic system installation began in March 1960 and was completed by 1962. It remained basically unchanged with only minor modifications until August 1973 when a wholly new, redesigned ventilation system was implemented. A schematic section of the mine and its ventilation system for the period prior to March 1960 is given in Figure "A", for the period 1960-1973 in Figure "B", and for the period after August 1973 in Figure "C". The ventilation system prior to 1960 is not known. All workings of the mine were ventilated only by natural ventilation. If any measurements of airflows at different or any times of the year ever existed, no records have been preserved. The very minimal natural ventilation was augmented by "blowing" air from compressed air supply lines and exhaust air from drills. It is known that the compressor capacities of the mine were limited and therefore no significant air movement was probably created by the "blowing".

The Manapouri Power Project is located in New Zealand's South Island Fiordland. The project is being constructed for the New Zealand Ministry of Works. Construction began in 1963 and is scheduled' for completion in 1969. The project will divert water from the natural, glacially carved Lake Manapouri, at Elevation 580, through vertical- penstocks into an underground powerhouse 364 feet long, 127 feet high, and 59 feet wide excavated about 700 feet below ground surface and about 560 feet below the present lake level. The possible ultimate power installation will produce 700 megawatts from turbines located in the underground machine hall. The turbine flow will discharge through the 6-mile, 30-foot diameter tailrace tunnel into a fiord arm of the Tasman Sea. The rocks in the project area are primarily Paleozoic Fiordland Complex gneiss, schist, amphibolite, and marble intruded by granitic rocks and pegmatite. Shear zones have been encountered in the tunnels and machine hall. These produce water and occasionally require steel support. The machine hall arch was stabilized entirely by rock bolt reinforcement. Rock mechanics instrumentation has been used throughout the project both for pre-construction design calculations and to monitor tunnel rock loads and movements of the machine hall roof and walls. About 28 miles of the 100-mile transmission line will be constructed across glacially oversteepened slopes and debris or swamp filled valleys between the power plant and the eastern edge of the mountainous area. Steep glacially carved rock slopes and locally unstable glacial till complicated construction of the transmission line access roads.

The present U.S. production of bromine is from inland brines located in Arkansas and Michigan. The most concentrated domestic brines (up to 5,000 ppm bromide)are situated in Arkansas. Less concentrated brines(about 2,500 ppm bromide) are located in Michigan. The amount of bromine sold or used in the United States came from three companies operating in those two states. Its value was $191 million. In 2004, the estimated U.S. bromine production was 222 kt (244,000 st). That compared with 216 kt (238,000st) produced in 2003.

Early Models In 1906, Daniel Jackling demonstrated that relatively low-grade disseminated copper deposits could be mined profitably using mass mining technology. The ensuing years saw a gradual increase in activity aimed at defining ore targets for large reserves of disseminated supergene enriched copper ores. Prominent organizations, such as Calumet and Hecla, Phelps Dodge, and Asarco, established teams of geologists. They focused on interpreting oxidized and leached outcrops over supergene chalcocite ore bodies. Techniques to evaluate oxidized cappings and predict the presence of underlying supergene chalcocite enrichment ores were developed and put to practical use by the late 1920s and early 1930s (Locke, 1926; Blanchard 1939, 1968). Oxidized capping evaluation centered on recognizing oxidation products derived from the various sulfide minerals found in disseminated deposits. Chalcopyrite, for example, oxidizes to a characteristic reddish pitch limonite that exhibits characteristic boxworks. Chalcocite is recognized by earthy, powdery, indigenous, hematite-rich limonite. Pyrite weathers to characteristic cavities and yellowish jarositic limonites. Evaluation of cappings is a systematic effort of noting and estimating the preoxidation sulfide mineral content and copper grade in an oxidized outcrop using mineral composition and morphology of oxidation products. Several complications were noted early in this technology's development. For example, the associated pyrite content of protore greatly influences mobility of copper and iron during oxidation. High-pyrite disseminated sulfide assemblages, upon oxidation, mobilize iron as well as copper. This results in oxidized rock with many leached cavities, poorly developed boxworks, and poorly developed indigenous limonites. This effect was noted and used in a general way to identify possible development of supergene chalcocite. Indeed, strongly leached outcrops could be present over enriched ore. A second complication is the manner in which associated gangue minerals influence the products of sulfide oxidation. Reactive gangue minerals, such as carbonates, neutralize acids formed by sulfide oxidation. Thus, copper cannot be moved from oxidized outcrops. Relatively nonreactive gangue, such as quartz-sericite-altered schist or porphyry, neutralizes supergene acid very slowly. This allows copper to move out of the oxidized outcrop. Recognizing these features was closely allied to an early understanding of the processes involved in oxidation supergene enrichment of disseminated ores. Field observations and mineralogic mapping of oxidized cappings were important in discovering many important porphyry copper ore bodies during the 1920s. These include Silver Bell, Miami-Inspiration, and Morenci in Arizona; Tyrone, NM; and Ely, NV. Capping interpretation like-wise led to discoveries at Mineral Park and Esperanza in Arizona during the exploration surge that accompanied high copper prices in the 1950s. In the 1960s, Kennecott research geologists refined and quantified some aspects of oxide capping appraisal (Anderson, 1982). The ratio of jarosite plus hematite to the total limonite assemblage was shown to be proportional to amount of copper leached from the oxidized outcrop. Thus, if the limonite assemblege in an oxidized capping consists of 40% goethite, 20% jarosite, and 40% hematite, 60% of the original copper is leached. The amount of copper remaining in the capping, together with the limonite mineralogy, can then be used to estimate original copper grade in the outcrop, amount of leaching, and chalcocite enrichment grade (in feet/% copper) in the underlying supergene chalcocite zone (Anderson, 1982). Evaluation of oxidized cappings and prediction of chalcocite blanket ore targets were successfully used in the western US and South America through the 1950s. Discovery of new porphyry copper provinces in other regions during the 1950s and 1960s, however, underscored some limitations of capping evaluation technology. Porphyry copper systems in Australia generally oxidize and weather to hematitic cappings. Presumably, the semiarid monsoon environment and the long time that the sulfide systems have been exposed to oxidation on that continent lead to development of relatively stable hematite. It is now recognized that jarosite and goethite persist metastably in the limonite assemblage in all areas once sulfide oxidation is complete and acid generation ceases (Brown, 1971). The assemblage eventually converts to hematite. But, climatic conditions in arid southwest US allows metastable limonites to persist for a long time, thus providing information on former sulfide assemblages.
