Newmont Gold Company is the largest producer of gold in North America. Accurate resource estimates are critical to planning the mining in a year of over 90,000,000 t (100,000,000 tons) of mill, leach and waste grade material, from which over 47 t (1,500,000 oz) of gold are recovered. Resource estimates are updated frequently to take advantage of new drilling, improved geologic understanding and additional production reconciliations. At Newmont Gold, indicator kriging is the primary method being used to create resource estimates. Indicator kriging (IK) is a well accepted method of resource estimation; however, many details of the IK process which are critical to producing a useful resource estimate have not been well documented. An IK model must have several characteristics in order to be a useful resource estimate: the model must take into account geologic features of the mineralization; model creation cannot require too .much time; the model must accurately reflect the effects of selective mining; the model must be stored in an easily accessible format; and the model must be useable with a variety of cutoff grades. This paper will show how Newmont Gold implements the IK process in order to achieve these goals.

Wet magnetic separation methods for the recovery of hematite and chromite fines and ultrafines were investigated. These methods included wet high-intensity and high-gradient magnetic separation, carrier or "piggy-hack" magnetic separation, magnetic field-induced aggregation and magnetic seeding. This investigation indicated that wet magnetic separation is more efficient for fines and ultrafines. This investigation also indicated that other methods can be used to enhance the particle aggregation and/or the magnetic response. The magnetic behavior of these minerals with respect to the magnetizing field, temperature and particle size is also presented.

There are many risks associated with the storage of nuclear or other toxic wastes. One of the major risks is the escape of material from the repository. No matter how well a storage facility is engineered, the potential escape of dangerous material must be studied. This kind of study will include some estimation of the "travel path" of the particles. The travel path of a radio-nuclide particle will depend on the geological and hydrological parameters of the surrounding rocks. These parameters must be estimated from a limited number of samples available within the study area. Any estimation will -of necessity -contain a certain amount of uncertainty or "estimation error". This uncertainty will be carried through to the analysis of potential movement of particles, so that the estimated travel path itself will be subject to some error. This paper discusses an approach which may lead to a quantification of the uncertainty on the predicted travel path.

The importance of factoring mining dilution into feasibility stage ore reserve estimates is discussed. An example that relates the issue of mining dilution to the size of smallest volumes that can be mined selectively is given. Relationship between the size of the selective mining units (SMU's) and the variance of their average grade is presented. The concept of variance reduction and its use in factoring mining dilution into geostatistical ore reserve estimation is described. An approach to estimate variance reduction factor by way of conditional simulation is introduced.

Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

The long-term mine scheduling is the optimal decision on how to extract and process the mining reserves. The resulting plan is mainly driven by economic, metallurgical, and geological factors. Accounting for their uncertainties leads to a robust solution and the feasibility for economic-risk quantification. In this work, we model the spatial uncertainty of grade distributions of multiple correlated elements, by using a multivariate morphing transformation. The result is a set of multivariate geostatistical realizations of the grades, which honor the conditioning data, the direct and cross variograms, and the multivariate statistical distribution, inferred from a set of samples. These models are the input in a reinforcement learning framework, adopted to train a deep neural network that considers the grade uncertainty and leads to an optimum mine plan after training using deep Q-Learning. Mining and processing capacities, as well as economic parameters and metallurgical constraints, are incorporated as the reinforcement learning environment rules. The method is validated on a real deposit, providing insights for future applications.

Thiosulfate is a green gold leaching agent that shows great potential to replace the highly toxic cyanide. Ammonia is traditionally used as the copper ligand in thiosulfate solutions to reduce the reactivity of copper ions towards thiosulfate, but it is a toxic reagent. As a result, efforts to replace ammonia with another complexing agent have received increasing attention. In this study, a novel alternative to ammonia is proposed to explore the potential use of the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system. Experimental parameters include temperature, initial pH, copper, malic acid, and thiosulfate concentration. The feasibility of the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system was discussed using Eh–pH and species distribution diagrams. Themodynamics analysis indicates that the mechanism of gold leaching in copper-malic acid-thiosulfate solution is mainly catalyzed by the Cu2( Mal)2H-2 2−/Cu(S2O3)3 5− redox couple. The capability of gold leaching in this system for processing the refractory gold concentrate is comparable to that of cyanidation and the traditional copper-ammonia-thiosulfate leaching processes. Thiosulfate consumption is greatly reduced in the presence of malate due to its strong chelating effect on the copper ions. Moreover, the copper-malic acid-thiosulfate system demonstrates a significant enhancement in leaching kinetics, making it a viable option for processing refractory gold concentrates.

The PC computer program PCVENT, version 3.3, for the ventilation network analysis now incorporates a real-time fire simulator. Position of the fire or a source of contamination and the character of the event are input from the keyboard. There are several options of type of fire: heat only, contaminant only, or both with a constant burning rate or with oxygen as the only limiting factor. Airway resistances or fan characteristics can be modified during a fire simulation. This allows testing of various fire suppression strategies. Program application in the analysis of a real mine fire is presented.

The Tennohji-Benten Giant Trunk Sewer Project has been under construction since 1974 in the eastern part of Osaka, the second largest city in Japan. The entire project is divided into 7 blocks, some of which have already been completed. This 8.8-km sewer tunnel, being driven through a densely populated area, was planned to be constructed by the shield tunneling method. This paper described shield tunneling performances and ground behaviors during the construction of Blocks 2 and 3. An earth pressure shield (dia., 6,750 mm) was employed in Block 3 tunneling. The ground was generally soft and the cover over the tunnel varied from 13 m to only 4.5 m, so that a considerable amount of chemicals was injected to stabilize the ground. A hand-digging type shield (dia., 7,250 mm) was used in Block 2 tunneling under compressed air. For 85 m of the total length of 1.6 km, the soil at the face was extremely soft, and therefore, the ground freezing method was additionally employed.

Three types of apatite were identified by means of cathodoluminescence (CL) images in flotation concentrate and tailing samples from the Catalão Mine in Brazil. They are predominantly blue apatite, followed by green apatite and, less frequently, yellow apatite. The chemical compositions of these types of apatite were determined by electron microprobe analysis and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). Blue and green apatite responded well to the process, thus remaining in the concentrate, while yellow apatite remained in the tailings. Yellow apatite has the lowest phosphorus pentoxide (P2O5 ) content and largest anionic and cationic sites substitution, followed by green apatite, whereas blue apatite is the most homogeneous, with highest phosphorus (P) and calcium (Ca) grades and lowest substitution level.

Newcrest Mining is one of the leading independent gold producers in Australia thanks in large part to its Cadia Valley operations. It is the largest gold and copper producer in New South Wales and one of the largest in Australia. This year Newcrest will expand its operations with a A$545-million expansion in the area. The Cadia Valley is approximately 250 km (155 miles) west of Sydney. The province presently includes the Cadia Hill opencut mine and the Ridgeway underground mine. With a significant mineralized system to the east of Cadia Hill and a mineral resource below Ridgeway, Cadia Valley has the potential to underpin Newcrest?s production for up to 30 years. In 2007, total gold production for the company in-creased to more than 50 t (1.6 million oz) and cash flow increased by 47 percent, according to the company?s annual report. The history of mining in the area dates back to 1851, but Newcrest?s history is young. In 1990, Newcrest commenced activities in the Cadia Valley. In 1992, Cadia Hill was discovered, with the discovery of Cadia East (1995) and Ridgeway (1996) following close behind. In 1998, the Cadia Hill openpit mine was commissioned. In 2002, the Ridgeway underground mine was commissioned and in 2007 the company?s board of directors approved an A$545 million development of the Ridgeway Deeps. The Ridgeway underground mine is located adjacent to Cadia Hill. The Ridgeway orebody has no surface expression but lies approximately 500 m (1,640 ft) below the surface and resembles an inverted teardrop. It measures approximately 450 m (1,476 ft) by 250 m (820 ft) and extends in excess of 850 m (2,788 ft) in depth. Ridgeway is a sublevel caving operation. Crushed ore from underground is delivered by conveyor to a surface stockpile, adjacent to the Ridgeway concentrator. Using similar processes to the adjacent Cadia Hill concentrator, gold and copper are recovered in a conventional flotation circuit to produce a copper concentrate containing elevated gold levels. Recent research conducted by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Re¬search Laboratory showed that electrical current levels permitted under present regulations may not limit cable temperatures to less than 90°C in reeled trailing cables. Reeled cables, which are tightly wrapped with many turns and which carry current in an enclosed space, can become overheated due to poor heat transfer. This overheating can cause the cable insulation to soften, making them prone to damage. The damaged insulation reduces the life of the cable and can lead to shock, electrocution and mine fires. This paper describes a method of measuring the conductor tem¬perature of mine trailing cables during normal operation. The temperature is measured using a 50/125-, µm graded index multimode optical fiber located in the center of the metallic conductors. Distributed temperature measurements are made using an optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR). This system is capable of measuring temperatures with an accuracy of ± I °C over a length of 4 km at I -mintervals. With this unique way of measuring temperature, tests can be conducted that simulate actual mine conditions. Non-operational mine facilities are subject to placement on the EPA's National Priority List (Superfund). Once a mine site is undergoing investigation and/or remediation, MSHA regulations for health and safety may no longer be applicable. This paper addresses the changes in the applicable and relevant standards that apply to health and safety and public health related to site contaminants. The implementation of health and safety plans, and the development of public health risk assessments are described. Examples are presented from Superfund activities at the Eagle Mine, near Minturn, Colorado; the Anaconda Smelter near Mill Creek, Montana; California Gulch near Leadville, Colorado; and Bunker Hill, Idaho.

New Mexico produced 83% of domestic potash and 27% of domestic consumption in 1992. The potash industry of New Mexico produces sylvite (KCI), langbeinite (K2SO4-2Mg(SO4)2), and artificial K2SO4. Average sylvite grade in New Mexico today is about 14%. The average grade of langbeinite is 8-10% Kp. Commercial potash occurs in the middle or McNutt Member of the Salado Formation (Upper Permian Ochoan Series). The 120-m-thick McNutt Member dips about 1° east and contains 11 of 12 potential ore zones in the Salado. The mineralogy and proportion of clay minerals, up to 7% of the ore, influence optimum milling procedures and ore grade cutoff.

In ore mining technology, the loading and hauling operations are undoubtedly the area where the most spectacular progress has been made during the last twenty years. I shall draw some examples from the Eastern France iron ore mines which I how well and whose production of 62 million tons for 1962 and 1963 constitute a worthwhile experience worldwide. The iron ore deposits of Lorraine are of sedimentary origin. They contain many mineralized horizons with workable seams situated from 330 to 830 ft. in depth. The dip of these seams is generally less than six percent. Their thickness varies from 6 to 23 ft. All seams are not workable throughout the whole area of occurrence, but in some mines there are five mineable seams in the same vertical section, with from 5 to 20 ft. of barren ground intervening between them. The iron content of the mineral varies from 28 to 36 percent. Specific gravity of the ore is 156 lb. per cu. ft. m place and 100 lb. per cu. ft. blasted. Reserves of iron ore in the Lorraine region are estimated at six billion tons with an iron content of more than 28 percent. These mines operate by means of rooms and pillars process, with pillar robbing; the final recovery is very good and averages 90 percent. Some years back, competition from richer, imported ores incited these mines to make constant efforts to increase their productivity and reduce mining costs, thus placing them in a leading position in mining technology, as evidenced by the dramatic evolution of their output per manshift (Figure No. 1).

In this study, the vibration exposure of excavator operators working regularly in 25 different natural-stone quarries was measured. In addition, the relationship between vibration exposure and rock properties was investigated. Gloved and ungloved vibration measurements were performed and revealed that antivibration gloves reduce excavator operators’ vibration exposure by 7.10 to 25.95 percent. Samples from each quarry were characterized with rock mechanics tests. The correlations between the hand-arm vibration measurements and the natural stone’s physical-mechanical properties, such as uniaxial compressive strength, Shore hardness, Knoop hardness, apparent density and total porosity were determined to be more than 70 percent. One finding of the study was that the health risk in excavators cannot be reduced sufficiently by the sole use of antivibration gloves. Furthermore, the excavation of any rock with a Knoop hardness above 121 is associated with an 81 percent risk of hand-arm vibration. To increase awareness of the danger of vibration exposure for natural-stone miners, training programs should be provided, and technical and operational changes should be implemented.

Experimentation was per formed on the flotation of apatite and dolomite separately using anionic collectors in the presence of Mycobacterium phlei. Also, the flotation of mixtures of dolomite and apatite in the presence of anionic collectors and in the absence and presence of the bacterium were studied. It was found that M.phlei functions as a depressant for both minerals. However, it functions as a better depressant for dolomite than for apatite. Experimentation was extended to two different Florida dolomitic phosphate rocks. In this investigation a concentrate grade of less than 1.0% MgO was achieved with a 75% P2O5 recovery.

There are about 1.8 Mt (2 million st) of discarded dolomitic-limestone tailings from the Gays River lead/zinc mining operation in Nova Scotia currently stockpiled in a tailings pond at the mill site. Neutralization effectiveness similar to an agricultural grade limestone and low contents of residual metals make the tailings a potential source of soil conditioner material for the local market. However, the fine particle size, 98% passing 147 pm (about 100 mesh), and a moisture content of 20% make their handling, shipping, and application to soils difficult. The tailings were agglomerated into small hard pellets with various amounts of soil nutrients, moisture content less than 13%, and pH values ranging from 6.5 to 8.7.

Having passed through the worst of times for industrial minerals demand, there are signs that the best of times lie ahead. If the downturn was the result of unsustainable economic policy, the path forward has everything to do with sustain-ably meeting the demands of more people enjoying higher standards of living than ever before. Minerals producers must be poised to understand and meet their requirements well into the next decade. Successfully marketing industrial minerals - the building blocks of a growing and increasingly urban world population - will depend on producers? ability to respond nimbly to a rapidly changing and regionally evolving macroeconomic environment. A renewed focus on energy conservation, sustainable agriculture and building practices and consumer demand for products with a smaller environmental footprint will drive product and market segmentation strategies. These trends will not only shape the way industrial minerals producers do business, but also the type of skills and people they will require to run those businesses.
