Hydro-Jex® is a new enhanced method for heap leach treatment with significantly higher mineral recovery. In this case study at the Los Filos Mine in Mexico, the Hydro-Jex operation is evaluated for heap leach stability. This is pursued by numerical modeling of the heap leach pad stability and well monitoring of the phreatic surface before and after the Hydro-Jex operation. Experimental and numerical results both indicate an improvement in mineral processing under the influence of Hydro-Jex. Numerical results show an insignificant decrease and a significant increase in stability during and after Hydro-Jex injection application, respectively. The integrity of the liner is maintained in both cases. The zonal injection pressure, operationally below the overburden pressure, is found to be negligible compared with the dimensionality of the heap, and stability of the structure is not exposed to any significant risk, even up to 25%above overburden pressure. Furthermore, heap leach factor of safety increases after Hydro-Jex application. This is attributed to breakdown of the water solution build-up and thus a decrease in the phreatic surface depth below the top of the pad. It is suggested that injection wells be drilled, based on thorough geophysical data, in locations where overcompaction of heap material results in water solution build-up and pore pressure enhancement. Compared with traditional heap leaching, the Hydro-Jex technique not only expedites mineral processing by increasing chemical kinetics extraction but also increases the stability of the heap by unclogging drains.

The Moon Creek Reclamation Project provides a case study in the development of creative cleanup solutions for an abandoned lead and zinc mine and mill site located in northern Idaho. Innovative design features include construction of a 88,000 cubic yard combined waste containment facility on soft in-situ tailings, water-balance cap, limestone gravel drains, a geocell mattress for stability, and a below-grade scour protection berm. The stream, including a wetlands buffer, will be relocated within an existing road alignment and rehabilitated to provide trout habitat. These elements allow for the integration of reclamation and stabilization measures into an effective site design.

In underground mining, hang-ups due to coarse fragmentation are frequently observed in drawpoints, drawbells, and ore passes during ore draw. Hang-ups can often require operational interference and hang-up removal activities. Drawpoint and drawbell design has been shown in some studies to influence hang-ups; however, the full extent of this influence remains open to question. In this study, the discrete element method was used to analyze the effect of hang-ups on three distinct drawbell geometries: the Drawer type, Circular type, and El Teniente type. The drawer type was used as the base case given that data was available from a physical model in which hang-ups were studied. The drawer type base case data was then used to calibrate our numerical model. Results show that the El Teniente drawbell geometry sustained 13% more hang-up events as compared with the base case, while the circular drawbell geometry had 16% fewer hang-up events than the base case. From this study, it can be concluded that fewer hang-up events will occur with a rounded drawbell geometry.

On Dec. 20, 2013, an 8-m (26.2-ft) diameter Robbins hybrid single shield/earth pressure balance tunnel boring machine (EPB TBM) was launched to bore the Grosvenor decline tunnel for Australia?s Anglo American coal mine. The machine was built using onsite first time assembly (OFTA) in order to fit within a tight project schedule. Assembly at the remote jobsite near Moranbah, Australia took about four-and-a-half months, and then the machine was walked down into a launch tunnel. Two decline tunnels, at grades of 1:6 and 1:8, will be used for mine access to new coal seams. The hybrid machine is tackling mixed ground conditions ranging from sand and clay to varying types of sedimentary hard rock up to 120 MPa UCS, as well as coal seams. Methane gas is expected to be present throughout the tunnel, so the machine has been designed as explosion-proof-compliant to ERZ-1. ?Grosvenor is the first underground coal mine in Queensland to use a TBM for drift construction,? said Glenn Tonkin, Grosvenor project director. ?We are proud to be pioneering this technology.? Only about 300 m (984 ft) of ground in each decline tunnel is expected to require EPB mode, while the rest of the tunnel will be bored in hard rock mode. Thus, the design was optimized toward hard rock excavation.

This paper discusses the overall challenges to construct a 15,125.7 m (49,625 LF),wastewater drainage tunnel in Cobb County, Georgia by a joint venture of Gilbert Southern Corp. and S.A. Healy Co. and a construction manager Parsons, with Jacobs Associates as a subcontractor. The goal of the project is to provide wastewater retention during peak usage and is connected to a treatment facility near the Chattahoochee River. The primary component of the project is the TBM-driven hard rock tunnel. Additional works include drill and blast areas; four intake interceptors, two construction shafts and a 33.5 m (110 ft), diameter pump station shaft.

This paper introduces a computer simulation which extends the utilization of microcomputer systems for mine ventilation planning. The program was developed as part of an ongoing study to produce a simulation model that would determine the optimum duties of a main fan and a booster fan without requiring the trial and error runs that are necessary with currently available programs. To use the new program, the user specifies the location of one main fan and one booster fan, and the minimum required airflows in any number of working places. The computer deter-mines the fan duties that will maintain the required airflows at the lowest operating costs without causing undesired recirculation. The methodology of the program and an example showing how it can be applied are presented.

ENERGY POI.ICY-PRINCIPLES AND THEIR PRACTICE Persistently, at least since the end of World War 11, governments have intervened broadly, deeply, and incoherently in major energy markets. If we take a broad definition of energy that encompasses gas distribution and electric power, we can observe regulations of even older vintage. This trend, of course, is not unique to energy. Expansion of government controls has occurred in many areas. The relevant basic question about energy regulation, therefore, is not why is energy special, but whether any general principles exist to explain the wisdom of existing regulations. This review takes place at a time, the middle 1980s, in which a massive onslaught is being undertaken against government regulation. However, the present chapter is influenced primarily by my observations of the failures of energy regulations and not by any inspiration from those ideologically opposed to government intervention. Several subquestions arise in policy appraisal. A primary need is to establish clear objectives and determine the consistency between these goals and the policies imposed. Thus, the first step is to set objectives. The next is to outline ways to attain these goals. However, it should be recognized that many apparently distinct options are economically equivalent. When the goal is to charge producers or consumers for something, it is possible to attain the same result through either government ownership or taxing private transactions. The tax can raise the price to the level the government would have charged if it were the owner. Creation of a Department of Energy is not necessarily any different from having separate energy agencies well coordinated by some small supervisory body. Thus, a distinction should be made between substance and form in policymaking. The critical substance concerns such matters as whether the government imposes financial penalties, incentives, or rules to attain a goal. Then, there can be many equivalent ways to implement the basic policy form. The second prior illustration suggests that one favorite question is how to attain proper integration of policy. At various times, voices on either (or even both) sides of the Atlantic have called for a coordinated energy policy. The U.S. Paley Commission made this a primary goal for future policy. The western European governments that were the founding members of the Coal and Steel, Economic, and Atomic Energy Communities spent much time in the middle fifties and much of the sixties trying futilely to agree on an energy policy. (See Gordon, 1970 for an annotated review). The energy price rises of the 1970s rekindled United States interest in coordination. However, astute observers of the problem such as O. C. Herfindahl of the United States and Maurice Allais (1 962) in France warned the discussions confused form with substance. The crucial issues were what were the goals and what were the best types of policies to attain such goals. Policy suffered, not from poor organization, but from discord about the goals and how to attain them. All this suggests that we need principles to guide policy appraisal. The problem of fine coal slimes has been addressed in a unique way at A. T. Massey Coal?Company. Several plants have employed two-stage classifying cyclones to separate the minus 1 mm raw coal into 3 sizes. Larger cyclones make the initial cut at approximately 150 µ (100?mesh) sending the underflow to a cleaning circuit (usually spirals) while the overflow is pumped to a secondary cyclone circuit using smaller cyclones. The small cyclones make a cut at near 70 µ (200 mesh) and produce an underflow that is a des limed flotation feed. The overflow is discarded to refuse due to its high ash and superfine size which would produce a high moisture product even if suitably recovered.

"The Wilshire Grand redevelopment project in downtown Los Angeles includes construction of a new 73-story tower. Construction required excavation up to 93 feet deep (28 m). The south side of the excavation, up to 57 feet deep (17 m), required placement of shoring within about 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3.0 m) horizontally away from a 400-foot-long (122 m) section of one of the existing Los Angeles Metro Red Line twin subway tunnels. These tunnels were constructed using a 22-foot-diameter (6.7 m) digger shield, and were initially supported with expanded, precast concrete segments, with final cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. The temporary shoring system for the deep excavation consisted of soldier piles generally spaced at 8 feet (2.4 m) on center with multiple levels of tieback anchors extending above the subway tunnels. The lowest level of bracing consisted of rakers supporting walers attached to the soldier beams because installation of tieback anchors at that level would conflict with the tunnels. Numerical analyses were performed to predict tunnel movement caused by the excavation and its effects on the train operations. This paper describes the numerical modeling, tunnel and geotechnical instrumentation and monitoring program, and comparison of the computed and observed tunnel responses to the deep excavation and tower construction. With increasing urban redevelopment in major cities, the project is a valuable case history for excavation adjacent to existing tunnels. INTRODUCTION The Wilshire Grand redevelopment project includes the demolition of a 16-story hotel built in the early 1950s and the construction of a new 73-story tower in downtown Los Angeles (LA) that will be the tallest building in the western United States. The project site is situated on approximately 2.7 acres (1.1 Ha) of land bounded by Figueroa Street to the east, Wilshire Boulevard to the north, Francisco Street to the west, and 7th Street to the south (see Figure 1a). The new tower is being constructed by Turner Construction for Hanjin International Corporation. Construction of the basement and foundation of the new tower required excavation up to 93 feet (28 m) deep. Shoring was designed by Cefali & Associates and installed by Malcolm Drilling Company. Along 7th Street, an excavation up to 57 feet (17 m) deep required shoring to be installed within about 6 to 10 feet (1.8 to 3.0 m) horizontally from an existing 400-foot long (122 m) section of one of the LA Metro Red Line subway tunnels (see Figure 1b). The tunnels, extending from the 7th/Metro Station to the Westlake-MacArthur Station, were constructed in the late 1980s and early 1990s with an excavated diameter of approximately 22 feet (6.7 m). They were initially supported with expanded, precast concrete segments with a final cast-in-place reinforced concrete lining. The existing hotel was demolished in 2012 and 2013, with shoring installation and excavation for the new basement occurring as the demolition occurred. At the time of writing, January 2016, the structure of the building adjacent to the tunnels is largely complete."

A technique is presented for the economic selection of a slurry pipeline with the aid of a computer. Mathematical models for the flows of homogeneous slurries are utilized. Only the pipeline and its prime movers are considered. Slurry flow properties are first obtained from rheology and/or pipeline data measurements. A rheological model is then selected for the slurry. It must be emphasized that the accuracy of the method is greatly affected by the accuracy of the slurry flow-property data. Approximate cost parameters may be selected from data for plain and lined pipes, centrifugal and positive displacement pumps, motors and engines. Cost data for the purchase, operation and maintenance of slurry pipelines are also described. A total cost equation for the ownership and operation of a slurry pipeline system is then established. The complexity of the equation is a function of the rheological model selected to describe the slurry. The equation is solved with the aid of a computer for several combinations of pipeline diameters and throughputs to yield minimum total annual cost for the system. A mean velocity is then computed to give the required throughput. The velocity is constrained by an upper and lower bound. A high velocity is undesirable from an energy consumption viewpoint and if pipeline wear is possible. On the other hand, the velocity must exceed the deposition velocity for a heterogeneous suspension or the critical velocity for a homogeneous suspension. There is no guarantee that the velocity developed by this method will lie within the constraints applied, nor that the constraints are even known. This is particularly true for heterogeneous slurries. An important feature of the method is the ease with which the variables can be adjusted to measure the sensitivity of the total cost to the variables. The purpose of the sensitivity analysis is to identify those critical variables that. if changed, can considerably affect the total cost. Mathematically, individual variables are changed and the effect of such a change on the annual total cost is computed. But from a designer's point of view, individual components in the system are changed to study their effect on the annual total cost. A change in one component of the system may involve a change in one or more variables. For example, the replacement of a steel pipe by a smooth-lined pipe will change the pipewall roughness and wall thickness as well as purchase, operating, and maintenance costs.

The flow behavior of bubble-particle aggregates in separation tanks is important for many flotation systems, particularly for wastewater treatment. These aggregates can be considered as the dispersed phase in a continuous liquid phase of water and the flow characteristics determine the efficiency of the bubble separation process. In this work, a general methodology for the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of a bubble separation tank is described. This system is analyzed by Eulerian-Lagrangian approach. The momentum transfer from the dispersed phase to the continuous phase is quantified using the Particle-Source-In Cell (PSI-Cell) method. With CFD simulations, the effectiveness of different tank design parameters are evaluated in terms of the extent of bubble separation.

Oil sand tailings are disposed of in large ponds in which MFT (Mature Fine Tailings, a stable suspension of fine particles in water) forms after many years of settling. Long-term storage of large volumes of MFT is costly to maintain and also poses an environmental liability. The Advanced Separation Technologies laboratory at CANMET Western Research Centre has worked closely with oil sand companies to eliminate MFT generation by applying paste technology to oil sand tailings. In this process the fine tailings are flocculated to produce a thickened material that has the potential to consolidate to a dry landscape, while warm water is recovered and recycled for reuse in the extraction process. This paper presents some results of an extensive technical program involving bench-scale tests for flocculant selection and continuous thickener pilot tests.

One of the challenges in the development of mineral processing simulators is the modelling of liberation characteristics of particles produced by comminution circuits. Understanding the mineral characteristics of these particles is one of the keys to predicting their behaviour in separation circuits. While more fundamental research seeks to model the non-random breakage of ores this work examines whether we can move forward now by using observed characteristics of ores to model the composition of particles generated in comminution processes. The current work examines a range of ores and identifies which of these exhibit the pattern of similarity of composition for particles in a given size class that has been produced as the result of a variety of breakage conditions. The impact of mineralogy and texture on the evolution of liberation characteristics for both valuable and gangue minerals is discussed.

Because the Environmental Protection Agency has identified methane as a greenhouse gas, the importance of de gasification through gob wells has become more critical. It has been observed that the degree of methane emission is closely related to the geomechanical characteristics of coal bearing strata, roof, floor, and surrounding coal seams. Monthly production data from 250 gob wells were collected from the Warrior Basin in Alabama, and many interesting correlations were observed between methane production with longwall face width, face advancement rate, number of gob wells in a panel, and geologic columns. Extensive finite element analyses were performed to estimate the characteristics of the emission zone in an attempt to corroborate these findings. This paper describes an investigation for developing correlations between the geomechanical behavior of the methane emission zone with methane production.

"Foreword by Lisa SchlinkSuperintendent, operations, Freeport-McMoRan Inc.,Green Valley, AZ, USAThe sixth annual Student Poster Contest hosted by the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration was held during the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, CO. The contest had another record-breaking attendance of 31 entries: 27 graduate and four undergraduate. The universities represented were: Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Wyoming and West Virginia University.The competition began with an extended abstract review by a panel of judges selected from MPD members. At the SME Annual Conference, all students displayed their posters, highlighting their research. The students with the top abstracts from the graduate and undergraduate divisions presented their research at the MPD Student Poster Session Wednesday morning. The panel of judges then provided tallied scores for the abstract, poster and presentation to determine the winners of the 2015 Student Poster Contest. The first- and second-place winners of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions received $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. The third through seventh places received $200 each, and all other entrants received $100 each and were invited to join the MPD Luncheon.In the undergraduate division, Annette Hein of the University of Wyoming received first place for her research on “Solvent Extraction of Europium from a Nitric Acid Solution.” Second place went to Jennifer Galvin of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for her research titled “Solvent Extraction of Neodymium Using PC88A.”In the graduate division, Caelen Anderson of the Colorado School of Mines received first place for his research titled “Fundamentals of Rare-earth Flotation Surface Chemistry: Hydroxamate Adsorption on Bastnasite”. This is Caelen’s fourth year placing in the top finisher. Second place in the graduate division went to Seyed Hassan Amini of West Virginia University for his research on “Ultra Clean Coal Production for the Solar-cell Industry.”The 2015 Student Poster Contest was chaired by Lisa Schlink (Freeport- McMoRan Inc.) and Emily Sarver (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). "At a distance of 10 years from the first application of the Nazzano Method, the widening under traffic of a tube of an existing motorway tunnel was realized near Ancona, along the A14 Motorway in Italy. This paper describes the works for the enlargement with conventional method of the second tube, very close to that already widened under traffic.This enlargement was realized very fast, taking into account the advantages of some interesting technological improvements of the Final Design proved in the first tube.INTRODUCTION TO THE WIDENING OF EXISTING MOTORWAY TUNNELSThe widening of a twin-bore motorway tunnel usually considers the double option of creating a third bore as an alternative or closure to traffic of one of the two bores with the resulting reduction in the level of service for users.On the contrary, the extension in situ of a road, motorway, railway or underground tunnel in the presence of traffic, made possible by an inspired idea of Prof. Pietro Lunardi, enables the level of service of the infrastructure to be maintained without the need to resort to alternative routes to create new permanent or temporary bores, not always feasible because of the lack of the necessary space.This construction technique, known as the ‘Nazzano Method’, is part of the technologies refined and offered by the ADECO-RS approach to tunnel design and construction (Lunardi P., 2008) which is increasingly used in the world, leading to the industrialisation of tunnelling (meaning respect for the times and costs set out during detailed design) both in conventional and mechanised (through TBM) excavations.The first true experimentation of the ‘Nazzano Method’ was carried out between 2004 and 2007 to enlarge the two-bore ‘Nazzano’ tunnel (Italy, Milan-Rome A1 motorway) in the presence of traffic, widening it to house from two to four lanes in each direction (Lunardi P. et al., 2007). Following the success achieved in this first application, the Nazzano Method was strengthened considering all the possible suggestions arising from the previous experience and then taken up to enlarge the north bore of the ‘Montedomini’ two-bore tunnel (Italy, Bologna-Taranto A14 motorway), in situ and the presence of traffic."
