Discussion by Dan Plazak The authors are to be congratulated for presenting a simple and practical tool for quick estimates of ground water flow rates. At the risk of detracting from the simplicity of the method, I would like to suggest a slight refinement to the equation as presented. As the authors noted, the Jacob-Lohman equation (1952) assumes confined-aquifer conditions. To use confined-aquifer equations in water-table aquifers, Jacob (1963) presented a correction to convert water-table aquifer drawdowns [Ahw] to equivalent confined aquifer drawdowns [Ah,: 2] [Ah Ah = Ah - w(1) Cw 2H where: Ah, = Drawdown in confined aquifer: Ahw = Drawdown in water-table aquifer and H = Original saturated thickness of aquifer] Substituting the above in equation ( I) of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson [4nT Ah - 2H ) Qj2.25 T t(2) 1 nr2 S W] Since the above expression predicts lower pump rates, it causes the Jacob-Lohman equation to agree more closely with appropriate analytical and numerical models. Figure 1, adapted from Fig. 5 of Hanna. Azrag and Atkinson, illustrates the closer agreement of the modified equation to their numerical model, as reflected in Qm/QJL ratios closer to unity. The agreement improves particularly as drawdown [Ah] becomes large in relation to aquifer thickness H. An additional advantage of the modified equation is that Hanna, Azrag and Atkinson's correction factor C is much more stable as pit depth increases. The modern flotation machine is the result of decades of adaptation to a changing environment. In response to falling ore grades, and rising demands, tonnages, and costs, attempts are now underway to expand machine capacity by about an order of magnitude, while at the same time maintaining metallurgical performance and if possible reducing power requirements per unit throughput. Empiricism and rule-of-thumb have guided flotation machine design and scale-up, and a current need is for the development of a fundamental understanding of the subject. Design features of current and some obsolete machines are discussed in an attempt to outline those principles of flotation machine design which are known, and to delineate topics needing investigation. Attempts are made to distinguish between essential machine features required by the physics of the process, those features resulting from speculative theories on the flotation mechanisms, and features which are essentially styling variations. Topics discussed include: flotation mechanisms; tank and impeller/ stator design and dimensions; impeller speed; aeration; power consumption; particle suspension and dispersion; capacity; correlation of design parameters and operating variables; scale-up and scale- down; materials flow; problems in machine design. Design details and operating data for several current machine families are provided in Appendices.

Bureau of Mines research has addressed improved operator protection for thin-seam shuttle cars. Because of working height restrictions in thin-seam mines (1.22 m or 48 in), MSHA regulations require that-canopy protection on shuttle cars be provided only in mines 1.07 m (42 in) and greater; however, variances are given to mines 1.22 m (48 in) and below. This paper reviews past Bureau efforts to develop protective structures for thin-seam shuttle car operators. The paper also discusses recent research leading to a novel method of protecting shuttle car operators, in mines as low as 1.02 m (40 in), through the use of a cross-car, end-mounted operator compartment.

Talks ranged from more efficient and safer ways to extract minerals to some of the most advanced end uses of minerals and metals, including the use of 3D printing to create precision parts for machines and humans from advanced metal alloys.“We need to adapt new technologies to our industry and develop additional technologies as we provide materials and metals for infrastructure and energy development in the United States, around the globe, and to the Moon and beyond,” Arnold told Mining Engineering. “Our inaugural THRIVE conference sets the stage for these innovations to be applied and to continue to be developed. European coal mines are facing a very difficult situation. Despite a steadily increasing world energy consumption, the sales of European coal mines have been going down and production has to be adapted. The reason is the collapse of energy prices aided by the decreasing rate of U.S. $ to Deutschmark in the last few years. The problems are not due to the development of European mines themselves. Assured energy supplies are an important condition for the health of a nation's economy. Contribution of domestic energy production ensures some degree of independence from world market fluctuations as to supply volumes and price, and maintaining jobs and should be achieved within the framework of economic constellations. Governmental energy programs are planned towards meeting this end.

The disposal of plant tailings in a safe and environmentally acceptable manner has taken on increased importance throughout the world, across all types of mineral beneficiation plants. In the U.S. plant life span, expansions and new plants in the current robust mineral markets are faced with environmental pressures to minimize the use of land for disposal by maximizing existing tailings pond capacity. The combination of many drivers from economic to environmental have brought paste thickeners into the coal industry (PasteThick 2007) Thickening tailings to a more concentrated slurry is a common step in the disposal flow sheet. Thickening to a non-settling ?paste?, also called ?thickened tails? or ?tailings stacking?, is a relatively recent development. This paper describes the paste thickener as an alternative for dewatering a fine coal refuse (tailings) stream for deposit as a paste. Initial operating results of the paste thickener are discussed.

Shale gas wells can sometimes drill through coal reserves. Hypothetically, the caving of the gob from longwall coal mines may deform the shale gas well casing and potentially result in a breach. NIOSH researchers studied the permeability of the surrounding ground strata that may affect the potential for an inflow of gas into an underground mine environment. An overview and comparison of measured permeability values under differing cover depths (147 m and 353 m to the Pittsburgh coal seam) and mining cycle phase will be presented and discussed in this report. The findings highlight data-driven experimental evidence that affect the interaction between gas wells extraction and mining operations that may lead to potentially hazardous environments.

Titanium is a metal of increasing worldwide strategic importance. The Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech of the University of Montana is currently directing two titanium research initiatives. The first program, Titanium Extraction Mining and Process Engineering Initiative (TEMPER), is focused on producing low cost titanium through the identification and development of new mining, beneficiation and extraction technologies which will significantly reduce the cost of titanium production. This will directly benefit worldwide commercial applications. Secondly, CAMP is evaluating new technologies for fabrication of titanium utilizing the Free Form Titanium Fabrication (FFTF) initiative. These technologies may drastically reduce the cost and time to manufacture titanium components. Because of the high strength to weight ratio of titanium coupled with its superior corrosion characteristics, these programs will be of vital importance to expanding the commercial and strategic applications of titanium. An overview of these two new titanium initiatives will be presented in this paper.

The Lower Olentangy Tunnel project includes 47,000 cubic yards of planned ground improvement for earth pressure balance machine (EPBM) tunneling (5.2 km) and microtunneling (335 m) in glacial soils. Jet grouting started in late 2021 and will continue through 2023 to complete operations at 5 shafts, 14 safe havens, 5 watermain ground improvement zones, and a river crossing. Typical jet grout columns are installed at depths between 15–24 meters. Discrete soil-cement blocks range from 267–8,900 cubic yards in volume. This paper discusses the methodology, testing, and technical considerations associated with jet grouting operations in glacial overburden across an urban environment.

Several years ago it became apparent to some of our people that; there was developing a very definite need for largee coal reserves in the West to satisfy- the need for fuel for the furnaces of electric generating plants with the rapid development of, the West, of both population and industry, it was impossible for hydro-electrics plants to keep up with the ever increasing demand for electricity. In 1960, Mr. E. R. Phelps, then associated with the engineering department of Peabody Coal Company, began a search for and development of coal deposits in the very remote northeast section of Arizona near the village of Kayenta. Travel to this section of the country was not easy even at this late date, and it was an eight hour drive from Farmington, New Mexico to Kayenta, Arizona, a distance of some 130 miles. The trip was over roads that even' a-horse and wagon had trouble negotiating and a four wheel drive vehicle was about the only type of transportation that could satisfactorily traverse these roads, as testify many badly beaten sedans and coupes that tried it. Since that time a very excellent road has been constructed from Shiprock; New Mexico to Cameron, Arizona where it junctions with another excellent road that runs north to Page, Arizona and the Lake. Powell area and south to Flagstaff, Arizona on highway 66. Kayenta is a small village nestled at the foot of the Black Mesa near its northeast extremities. The coal deposits of interest were on the surface of the mesa. This location presented another problem, as the only trail to the top of the mesa was intended for walking, horseback, or a brave soul In a horse and wagon. Once again the four wheel drive vehicle was about the only answer. To reach the coal deposits you must climb the mesa, which is vertical ascent of some 1,500 feet, and then proceed southward into the bowl of the mesa with an ensuing descent of some 1,000 feet, finally coming to an elevation of 6,500 feet, at which elevation the coal outcrops become apparent.

In the past 30 years, there have been tremendous advancements in the uses and applications of column flotation. From their first use as final cleaners that could produce excellent grades at the cost of recoveries, columns are now being used in every stage of the flotation circuit as well as is SX-EW. Columns as roughers, final scavengers and even at the end of CIL circuits, are finding their way into the marketplace. Operational results of these new uses are presented. INTRODUCTION Flotation columns have been in use since the early 1950's in the U.S. (Hollingsworth, 1952) and the early 1960's in Canada (Trembley, Boutin, Wheeler, 1963). Application of column flotation has been somewhat diverse. In the early years, columns were used predominately for molybdenum cleaning in Canada and for phosphate flotation in the United States. Unfortunately, results met with skepticism and disdain as the columns were hard to operate, temperamental and although producing high grades, could not achieve acceptable recoveries. Since the inception of column flotation technology, the degree of knowledge for design and operation of columns has vastly improved. Despite improvements in the technology, there is still some reluctance by mineral producers to investigate the use of column flotation cells for processing stages other than cleaner flotation. This characterization is in part due to the proven advantage of flotation columns in reducing gangue entrainment in the froth product which results in higher grade products and/or fewer processing stages. Also, during the development of column technology, different types of spargers have been used with varying degrees of success. Furthermore, the general knowledge base of parameters affecting column flotation design and operation have advanced tremendously. Inefficient, or primitive, sparger design, coupled with the lack of column design and operating knowledge and experience, resulted in poor metallurgical and mechanical performance in many cases. Unfortunately, this lack of knowledge caused many column installations to be characterized as failures. The industry felt that columns could not achieve high recoveries, especially when dealing with coarse particles. Therefore, columns were characterized as cleaners, where low recoveries could be tolerated as recirculating loads rather than direct losses and froth cleaning advantages of the quiescent column flotation regime could be realized. Fortunately for the minerals industry, some producers have stood at the forefront of technology and allowed the column to be utilized for new applications. In the last decade, column flotation applications have expanded to virtually every mineral system and plant location throughout the world. The expanded application of columns has generated a new wave of interest for processing various streams. One of the most notable is in the use of columns as rougher cells. This is of particular interest to "green-field" plants and plants where expansions are taking place. Here, metallurgical superiority can be combined with maximum capital and operating cost advantages for a rapid return on investment. The superior results experienced to date, have generated a cohesive vision of the future in mineral processing where flotation columns function as single stage primary separation devices (roughers) with a single stage cleaner, if necessary. The advantages of column flotation go far beyond their original uses. We now have seen columns used as final tail scavengers, in SX-EW plants and even at the end of CIL circuits. Some of these cases will be reviewed. CASE STUDIES In an attempt to show the diversification of column flotation to many facets of the mineral processing plant, a variety of case studies will be discussed. Some of these were designed by the authors while others have been provided by plant sources. It is important to note that in each successful case, the columns were designed using the author's design and scale-up approach. A Mark IV surface force apparatus (SF A) was used to conduct direct force measurements in dodecylamine hydrogenchloride collector solution between mica surfaces at varying pHs. It has been found that the long-range hydrophobic forces reach a maximum at pH 9.5, which also corresponds to the maxima attained by the contact angle and flotation recovery of quartz. The charge densities are comparable on both mica and quartz surfaces (0.40-0.48 run2), making it possible to draw conclusions on the flotation of quartz from the direct force measurements conducted on mica. Therefore, it may be suggested that the maximum flotation recovery of quartz m the range of pH 8.0-10.3 may be attributed to the appearance of long-range hydrophobic force, which in turn can be related to the formation of a close-packed monolayer (or hemimicelle) in the presence of neutral amines formed as a result of hydrolysis.

Recent fatal injuries occurring during pillar retreat coal mining call for better identification of the hazards and recognition of risks. Ground control hazards associated with room-and-pillar retreat mining tend to intensify with depth, requiring extra precautions in the form of additional controls. In many locations these activities are further complicated by local complexities often associated with unique or novel circumstances, such as over-mining or under-mining. One technique recently studied by NIOSH, Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), may help mine operators to mitigate the risks associated with pillar recovery operations. The approach was trialed at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia that are currently practicing pillar recovery. The first step in the MHRA process involved reviewing the segments or parts of the pillar extraction mining system and identifying associated hazards and threats to the operation. Some of the high risk hazards at these two sites included: ? Rock fall during pillar extraction covers equipment and injury occurs during recovery operations, ? Rock fall above the roof bolt horizon, potentially injuring ? workers and/or requiring recovery action, ? Rib fall under deep cover, potentially injuring workers, and; ? Strata instabilities associated with subsidence of the interburden due to simultaneously mining two seams in close vertical proximity to one another. The mines? risk assessment teams then considered each threat individually in order to systematically identify potential unwanted events. The top unwanted events were examined individually using structured risk analysis tools. The output from the process includes a list of priority existing controls for monitoring and auditing, and a second list of potential new controls. These controls consisted of: Examples of best practices, ? Enhanced communication, ? Implementing standard operating procedures (SOP), ? Protocols for emergency response actions, ? Effective layouts, ? Efficient monitoring, and; ? Successful audits. This paper documents the process as it unfolded at the two mines, and analyzes the strengths and weaknesses of the MHRA technique as it applies to pillar recovery operations. This work was part of a larger NIOSH research project. NIOSH was responsible for: 1) facilitating the risk assessment process known as Major Hazard Risk Assessment (MHRA), 2) documenting the risk assessment process, and 3) providing mine management with a written draft summary of the risk assessment process. The results of the risk assessment represent the thoughts and opinions of the individual risk assessment teams and should in no way be construed as an endorsement of the risk assessment output by NIOSH or the University of Pittsburgh.

Many disputes related to environmental issues in mining are resolved through often-antagonistic negotiations in a regulatory context or through litigation. These approaches are certainly the best choices for resolving certain disputes. However, just as no single remediation technology is the right fit for every site, so no single dispute resolution process is the best choice for every situation. This paper introduces a range of dispute resolution alternatives (from collaborative decision making through mediation, arbitration, and litigation). Especially when money is tightest, cost-effective dispute resolution(and the outcomes that can accompany it) can have an impact on the bottom line.

When the Henderson Project is completed in 1975, it will become one of the Free World's largest primary molybdenum producers. The Henderson Mine will be located approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado, on the eastern slope of the Continental Divide. Ore reserves are currently estimated to be 303,000,000 tons with a grade of 0.49% MoS2. The mill and tailing area will be located approximately 14.5 miles from the mine in the Williams Fork Valley, which is on the western slope of the Continental Divide. Ore haulage from the mine to the mill will be by ten miles of underground railroad and 4.5 miles of surface railroad. The concentrator has been designed to mill 30,000 tons per day and will yield approximately 50,000,000 pounds of contained molybdenum per year. This paper is concerned with the tailing and water supply system for the Henderson Project and in particular the environmental considerations affecting their design.

The Stillwater pt-pd mine and flotation mill are located about 130 km (80 miles) southwest of Billings in Stillwater county, M6ntana~ The pt-pd ore zone stretches about 43 km (27 miles), but varies in thickness from 0 to 6 meters (0 to 20 feet, but generally 3-6 feet) and dips 55-90,degrees from horizontal. The ore is hosted in basic, layered igneous rocks containing about 1% sulfide minerals which include chalcopyrite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and minor pyrite. The pt-Pd minerals are intimately associated with these sulfide minerals and are found as precious metal sulfides, tellurides, bismuthnides, and arsenides as well as native Pt metal. Approximately 90 different precious metal minerals have been found, but about 80% of the pd is in solid solution in the pentlandite. The ore assays about 0.1% Cu, 0.1% Ni, 6.2 g Pt/tonne (0.18 Troy ounce Pt/short ton (opt)), 21.3 g Pd/tonne (0.62 opt Pd), 0.21 g Au/tonne (0.006 opt Au), and 0.21 g Rh/tonne (0.006 opt Rh). The ratio of pd to Pt in the Stillwater ore and concentrates is about 3.5.

This paper presents the results of an investigation of the application of thermal fragmentation in Australian hard-rock, underground, narrow-vein mining. Two geologically similar samples from an underground, narrow-vein, hard-rock gold mine were collected to obtain a measure of the technology’s ability to recover ore by the creation of large thermal openings to assess the applicability of the thermal method.

This paper describes the evolution of the Waste Management Program at the Lupin Mine through the years 1982 - 1986. Echo Bay Mines' Lupin Mine is located on the western shore of Contwoyto Lake in Canada's Northwest Territories about 80 km. south of the Arctic Circle. The gold mine commenced production in 1982 and the Waste Management Program was based originally on the total containment concept. Due to an expansion of the mill circuitry and increased throughput, it was apparent that total containment was no longer applicable and therefore studies were undertaken to characterize the tailings, to evaluate the effectiveness of natural degradation of contaminants in the tailings pond and to determine what additional treatment steps would be necessary to meet the requirements of the mine's Water Licence. These studies indicated that arsenic and cyanide concentrations in the tailings pond decant water would not meet Water Licence discharge limits unless certain measures were under taken. As a result of this work, in late 1984 a decision was made to create a two-ponds-in-series system and the necessary civil work was started in 1985. In addition, a series of dykes were constructed to contain the solids portion of the mill tailings in a confined area of the first pond. To remove cyanide, the ponds are operated in a sequential fill and decant mode to take maximum advantage of natural degradation. For arsenic removal, a chemical feed system was constructed for iron salt addition to the decant stream from the first to the second pond. Decanting of the ponds is accomplished by means of a series of 500 mm (20 inch) Sclairpipe syphons.
