Utah produces a wide variety of industrial rock and mineral commodities, valued in 1998 at $534 million (28 percent of the total non-fuel mineral production of Utah). Major commodities produced in 1998 include: halite; potash and magnesium chloride; Portland cement; sand and gravel; car- bonates including lime, limestone, and dolomite; phosphate; crushed stone; clays; perlite; gypsum; and sulfur and sulfuric acid. Commodities produced in lesser amounts include: diatomite; pumice; silica; lightweight aggregate; gemstones, ornamental stone, and mineral and fossil specimens; byproduct sulfur and sulfuric acid; silica; and building stone. The years 1993 through 1998 were a period of steady growth in industrial rock and mineral production. However, some commodities have grown much more rapidly than others. The robust western U.S. economy has stimulated production of construction-related commodities like sand and gravel, raw materials for Portland cement, lime, and building stone, resulting in exploration for raw materials, development of new quarries, and expansion of existing plants. Noteworthy specific developments include: (1) opening of new aggregate operations and buyouts of small aggregate operations by large national and international firms, (2) expansion of a lime operation and two cement plants, and (3) development of several new gypsum mines. The future of the industrial minerals industry in Utah looks promising despite a more restrictive regulatory environment and a growing anti-development attitude among its citizens. While Utah has become less pro-development than it was prior to the 1990s, it is still moderate compared to strongly anti-development states, so companies have some motivation to choose Utah in their strategic mineral development plans. As long as the western states' economies continue to grow, Utah's industrial minerals industry should thrive.

"The field demonstration portion of the Underground Grouting and Ground Improvement (UG&GI) short course offered by the Colorado School of Mines was held on May 18, 2016 at Baski Inc.’s Yard in Denver, CO.Numerous full field scale demonstrations of grouting methods and equipment were conducted under various field conditions. As part of these field tests, permeation grouting testing and demonstrations were also conducted. Various cement grout mixes were injected into 1.5-m (60-in.) tall transparent sand columns under controlled conditions (Fig. 1). The objective of the sand column permeation grouting demonstrations in the study was to show students the effects of ordinary Portland cement versus ultrafine cement on the engineering properties of the grout, and the permeation height through various types of soil stratigraphic layers in the sand columns. Similar previous demonstrations have had a specific focus on various brands of Type I-II Portland cements and ultrafine cements with a range of water cement ratios and injection pressures. More detailed information about these previous studies can be found in published proceedings (e.g. Henn et al., 2009 -2011).Equipment and material usedThe five clear plastic sand columns were 191 mm (7.5 in.) inside diameter and 1,524 mm (60 in.) tall. Each sand column had a 19 mm (0.75 in.) diameter hole drilled at the base (bottom) of the blind flange for injection of the grout. A perforated plate and/or screen at the base of the sand columns helped to prevent sand from plugging injection port. A ChemGrout grout plant was used for the demonstration consisting of 0.36 m3 (97 gal) high shear (colloidal) tank mixer, a 0.36 m3 (97 gal) agitator tank and a progressive helical cavity pump with maximum output capacity of 77 L/min (20 gpm) at a maximum discharge pressure of 265 psi (18 bar) (Fig. 2). A simple grout header arrangement consisting of control valves, pressure gauges, flow meter, grout delivery and return line, and a short injection line was also custom built. Also used were infra-red thermometers to measure the temperatures of the grout mix batches, CRD and marsh funnels to measure viscosity, baroid mud balance to measure specific gravity, and a digital scale to measure weights. The grout materials used were Holkim Portand cement (Type I-II), Nippon Steel Sumikin superfine cement and U.S. grout ultrafine cement."

Oxidation potentials have been measured in the presence of various concentrations of cyanide, ferrocyanide, and ferricyanide and ethyl xanthate at various values of pH and related to flotation response. Eh-pH diagrams are constructed and show that the formation of surface ferric ferrocyanide is probably responsible for depression when cyanide is added. The influence of cyanide in the depression of pyrite with xanthates as collector has been the subject of many investigations (1,2,3,4,5,6), and from these studies several theories on the mechanism of depression have evolved. Wark and Cox (7) and Gaudin(8) have suggested that the depressing effect is due to a competition of cyanide ion with xanthate ion for the surface. Cook and his colleagues (9,10,11) have explained this phenomenon in terms of competition between hydrocyanic acid and xanthic acid. Sutherland (12) has shown that both of these theories describe accurately the relation between pH value and cyanide addition at constant collector addition but fail to describe the relationship, between pH value and the amount of collector required to cause flotation. Taggart(12) suggested that depression in these systems is due to the formation of a reaction product between ferric ion at the pyrite surface and ferrocyanide ion derived from solution. Majumdar(4,6) has attempted to prove this hypothesis by measuring the contact angles of pyrite in the presence of 25 mg/liter ethyl xanthate and different concentrations of potassium ferrocyanide and ferricyanide. In all cases the contact angles were quite high up to pH 10; these results indicate that pyrite should not be depressed by either potassium ferrocyanide or ferricyanide. In view of these facts, Majumdar has assumed that the compound Fe(CN)2 forms at the surface.

Porphyry type copper ± molybdenum deposits typically occur in the Phanerozoic rocks and have been well documented. During the past two decades a number of porphyry type Cu ± Mo deposits which range in age from 1055 ± 35 Ma to 2970 Ma have been identified in the Precambrian rocks of Australia, Canada, China, Finland, India, Namibia and Zambia. Kalanjkhand porphyry copper deposit M. P., India which is estimated to contain 789 million tonnes averaging 0. 83 percent Cu (millhead-grade); 0.004 percent Mo; 0.2 gm/t Au; 6 gm/t Ag and a cap of 7.532 million tonnes of oxide are averaging 0.8 percent Cu. The economic potential of the expanded copper mining milling, smelting and refining complex to be built in the future at Kalanjkhand, which is the largest porphyry copper deposit discovered to date in the Precambrian rocks of the world is presented.

The telephone rings at 3:20 a.m. and an exasperated voice on the other end says, “There’s been a mine explosion at Mine No. 5 and we have not heard from three units of men!” Twenty-three minutes later, the phone rings again and another panicked voice says, “There’s something wrong at the slurry impoundment, the pool level has just dropped five feet and we’re trying to figure out what’s wrong!” Thirty minutes later, the mobile phone rings and an excited security guard says, “We have reports of thick black water running down both the right fork and left fork of Straight Creek and both seem to be rising in the banks!” As if this isn’t enough excitement, the mobile phone rings again and a stressed company official says, “I just heard a report that black slurry is running out of the portals of XYZ Company No. 2 Mine, which is adjacent to our No. 5 Mine!” Is this all some kind of dream or nightmare? More importantly, however, if this could happen, what on earth do you do? Although we all like to think that “It can’t happen to me,” we all must admit that mine explosions do happen, slurry impoundments can rupture and creeks can flood with black water causing damage to others, including competitors. Your response must be quick, cool-headed, calculated and effective. This paper will examine the issues, concerns and ramifications of this hypothetical “disaster” and then present a systematic crisis management response. While each situation is different, there are general guidelines for forming an effective plan of action.

The Ortiz Mountains lie 25 mi (40 km) northeast of Albuquerque, New Mexico in Santa Fe County (Figure 1). Approximately 350,000 ounces (11,000 kgs) of gold have been produced from the Ortiz Mountains since the 1820s. The 100 square mile (260 square km) Ortiz Mine Grant was secured from the Mexican government in 1833 by Jose Francisco Ortiz for the purpose of mining gold. The Grant has remained more or less intact to the present. The mineral rights are currently owned by Ortiz Mines, Inc. of Joplin, Missouri and are leased to LAC Minerals, USA, Inc. (west half) and to Gold Fields Mining Corporation (east half).

Introduction Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and its joint venture partner, Breakwater Resources Ltd., discovered ore grade gold mineralization on their 20 km2 (5000 acre) Wenatchee, WA land position in February 1983. Due to the high grade nature of the discovery ore and the known reserves of ore in the "B Reef' and "B West" zones previously outlined by other companies, a decision was made to construct a mine/mill operation near the known ore occurrences. Further drilling in the discovery area quickly expanded known gold occurrences to more than 3.6 Mt (4 million st) with tentative in-place ore grade of 7 g/t (0.25 oz per st) and minor silver values. Based on existing knowledge of the ore body and the rapidly increasing ore reserve, a decision to build a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) mine and mill complex was made in the second quarter of 1983. A schedule was devised to begin immediate mine development, shaft sinking, environmental and land use permitting, and mill and tailings dam construction (Fig. 1). Meeting the scheduled startup date, April 1, 1985, required a fast track schedule in all areas. To this end, Asamera purchased the Oracle Ridge Partners concentrator. This was an assemblage of new equipment designed for use as a copper concentrator in southern Arizona. The purchase contained all of the major mineral dressing equipment - crushers, screens, rod and ball mills, etc. and an engineering package. It did not include most of the other required items, such as buildings, conveyors, pipelines, tanks, and pumps. At the same time, core samples were sent to two independent process development laboratories for initial flowsheet development. Due to the refractory nature of the carbonaceous ore, cyanide leaching was not feasible. Flotation was selected as the concentration process. Further testing showed that autoclaving of the flotation concentrate followed by cyanidation would result in overall recovery of about 85% gold. A mine manager was hired to begin assembling an operations staff, hire an environmental consulting firm, and begin mine development. Environmental and land use concerns were major obstacles due to the mine's close proximity to a city of 20,000 people. These concerns had to be rapidly defined so as to mitigate any adverse impacts from and mining processing operations. Baseline data dealing with weather, air and water quality, and sound were measured before start of mine construction. Concentrator and flowsheet development remained static until October 1983 while definition drilling and mine development proceeded. In late October, a process engineer was hired to coordinate development of a process flowsheet, purchase the remainder of the concentrator equipment, prepare a concentrator construction contract, finalize concentrator detail engineering, and combine environmental and process requirements with a tailings dam design. Process development There were only 17 months remaining to mill start up from the hiring date of the process engineer. Therefore, the process flowsheet had to be finalized rapidly. To accomplish this, samples of drill core from the highest grade (and therefore potentially the most commercial) ore zones were sent to an outside metallurgical laboratory to confirm beneficiation tests on the flotation process. Test results again showed that flotation would provide about an 86% gold recovery. Therefore, all further testing was concentrated on flotation and autoclave/cyanidation of flotation concentrates. Focusing on a well known process such as flotation was important in accomplishing the rapid design and construction of the concentrator. If, during these next phases, we were continually changing design concepts, layout, and process flow, the mill startup would have been delayed many months. Once a process flowsheet is selected the process engineer must obtain the process criteria needed to design the beneficiation system. For example, it was known in early December that the Oracle Ridge rod and ball mills were too small to grind 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd) of Wenatchee ore. A decision had to be made to purchase a large, used ball mill and convert the Oracle Ridge ball mill to a rod mill. The process engineer must be cognizant of the process criteria needed to size and select equipment. If not, the process engineer must use the professional services of the equipment manufacturing companies to review the requirements that the equipment is asked to perform. For the Wenatchee system, this resulted in the adaptation of a ball mill to a rod mill with a weight limit of grinding rods to protect the mill bearings and drive trains. When a decision is required, the process engineer has to present the facts and options in a manner that allows a rapid decision. This information must include costs, equipment availability, and effect on the construction schedule. At the Cannon mine, there were process development details that resulted in decisions similar to the ball mill purchase. These included an increased flotation residence time from eight to 25 minutes, an increased thickener area requirement, a high pressure tailings pumping system, and area constraints in plant layout. All of these decisions had to be timely and required assistance from manufacturers' service engineers, and knowledge of the alternate costs and effects on construction completion. Ground water, one of Florida's most valuable resources, is also one of its most abundant. The State is fortunate to have several prolific ground- water reservoirs that yield tremendous quantities of water to wells and to some of the world's largest springs. These ground-water reservoirs, or aquifers are of two types artesian and nonarteaian. Ad artesian aquifer is one that contains water under sufficient pressure to rise above the top of the oontaining formation. A nonartesian aquifer is one that contains water which is not confined, and the upper water surface (water table) is free to rise and fall. The principal source of ground water in Florida is the artesian Floridan aquifer which supplies most of the water users in the State. Nonartesian sources include the Biscayne aquifer of southeastern Florida, the sand-and-gravel aquifer of extreme western Florida, and a shallow aquifer which lies at depths of less than 100 feet over much of the State. The accompanying map shows the approximate areas where these aquifers are the main source of supply; however, the boundaries do not represent the areal extents of the aquifers. For example, the Floridan aquifer extends beyond the southern boundary shown on the map, but it is not of great economic significance there because the water is highly mineralized. Aquifers other than the four described occur in the State, but they are, for the most part, of minor significance. One of these is an artesian aquifer which is formed by permeable zones that occur locally within the confining beds above the Floridan aquifer.

The Surface Water Supply Project Segment B3 is a 4 miles section of tunnel that will run East- West in Houston TX, from Hopper St to I-45. The tunnel will be mined by using a 128" Dia refurbished 1987 Lovat Tunnel Boring Machine capable of operating in Open or EPB mode. The tunnel will be temporarily supported with ribs and lagging and a 96" Dia pipe will be grouted into place. All four miles of this project are within Petroleum Pipeline Easements. The project includes seven shafts, 2000' of tunnel in potentially petroleum contaminated ground, crossing the Hardy Toll d, I-45, the nion Pacic ailroad ight of Way and multiple oil and gas pipeline crossings. This paper summarizes the planning and drive performed to date.

The Black Hawk district in New Mexico hosts an unusual type of deposit: arsenide five-element veins. These deposits are Ag-Co-Ni-Bi-As-bearing carbonate veins with local concentrations of U, Pb, Zn, Sb, and other elements. They are high-grade silver deposits (1000s g/t Ag), but low tonnage (<1 Mt) and difficult to find. By 1881, claims were staked and a town developed. It is estimated that >$1,500,000 was produced in 1883–1893, when Ag prices dropped due to the 1893 Ag panic. Solid Silver Mining Co. produced $600,000 from the Black Hawk mine; one car load contained $28,000 worth of silver! The town of Black Hawk grew to 125 population by November 1883. By the end of 1893, the town was vacant; nothing remains. The district was idle until 1916, and the mines operated sporadically since because of lack of available capital, water issues, and difficulty in finding ore shoots. The area is a favorite for mineral collectors. Tungsten was found in the district in 1935 in quartz veins associated with pegmatites. Metal production from 1881–1960 is estimated as 3,000 lbs Cu, 1,000 oz Au, 1,286,000 oz Ag, and 4,000 lbs Pb. In addition, 10,542 short tons of 2.7–71% WO ore and 615 short tons of fluorspar ore have been produced from the district.

In determining the layout or combination of unit operations to be utilized in a modem preparation plant, several factors must be taken into account. Among these are the washability data, size consist data, the particular market or markets for the coal, the mining method used, the degree to which the coal must be prepared, expected fluctuations in raw coal and markets, and the overall economics of the process. In addition, there are the health and safety aspects of coal utilization and preparation. Chapter 1 of this book discusses the characteristics of coal and coal markets, while Chapter 2 deals with the design of preparation plants. Once the unit operations for a particular plant have been decided upon, these arrangement may be depicted by using a flowsheet. A coal preparation plant flowsheet is a two-dimensional graphical representation of the sequence of operations, the arrangement of machinery, and the flow of materials for a particular coal cleaning operation. The flowsheet is usually qualitative in nature, becoming more quantitative as material balances, water balances, numbers and sizes of various pieces of equipment, etc. are added. The usual convention in preparing a flowsheet is to show the feed flowing from left to right, starting at the top left and working down as in an all-gravity process. Various symbols are used for each unit operation as depicted on a flowsheet, and Fig. 14-37 is a compilation of the commonly accepted international standard symbols for each unit operation. Fig. 14-38 through Fig. 14-40 are flowsheets of various coal cleaning processes as published in the January 1976 issue of Coal Age. Each process has its own unique features which, among others, depend upon the coal being cleaned, the coal market, and the mining operation. Fig. 14-38, for example, is a flow diagram for a jig plant preparing steam coal from two strip mines located a few miles apart. In addition to the jig washer, cyclones are used to treat the finer size coal. Fig. 14-39 is a flowsheet of a heavy media plant using a heavy media washer for + %-in. (+6.3-mm) coal, froth flotation for -28 Tyler mesh (-0.6 mm) material, and dewatering phase units (dwp) for Y, in. x 28 Tyler mesh (6.3 x 0.6-mm) cleaning of steam coal. In addition, thermal drying, centrifuge drying, and the use of vacuum disk filters and thickeners for dewatering are depicted. Fig. 14-40 is a flowsheet of a plant producing metallurgical coal. In addition to the heavy media and froth flotation circuits, a tabling circuit is also employed. These flowsheets are intended to give the reader an example of how the various unit operations for coal cleaning may be linked together. Figs. 14-41 and 14-42 illustrate the conversion of block diagrams into an IS0 prescribed set of symbols.

Quartz dust is one of the most significant ongoing health concerns in coal mining today. Since initial verification of this health risk in coal mines by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) during the early 1980’s, the Bureau of Mines has conducted numerous studies in underground mines to identify the sources of quartz dust and its fundamental characteristics. The most significant underground quartz dust source was found to be the continuous miner excavating rock. The percentage of quartz was also found to be higher in the smaller size fractions of the dust when significant amounts of rock was mined by the continuous miner. Furthermore, the quartz content in the continuous miner return remained fairly consistent at greater distances from the face. Another important factor speculated to affect quartz dust generation and its size characteristics is the morphology of the quartz bearing rock. The quartz content of dust between mines had notable differences with respect to the differences between kaolinite content in the dust. Low kaolinite content was associated with higher quartz content and increased size segregation of quartz into smaller dust particles, indicating that the free silica bonding matrix in the rock is most likely another factor responsible for quartz dust produced through mechanical comminution.

After 15 years of production, 91 Mt (100 million st) of ore mined and nearly 227 kt (500 million lb) of molybdenum produced, Climax Molybdenum Co.&apos;s Henderson Mine and Mill are being modernized as a new mining level is brought on line. The $40 million investment in mine development and plant modernization positions the Henderson complex as one of the largest, low-cost primary molybdenum producers for the next 15 years. Henderson history The Henderson Mine and Mill facilities are located on the east and west flanks of the Continental Divide about 80 km (50 miles) west of Denver, CO. The underground mine and surface mill sites are linked by 16 km (10 mile) of railroad tunnel and 8 km (5 mile) of surface trackage. The mine, railroad and mill were built between 1968 and 1976 at a cost of $500 million. Each has operated at various levels of production over the past 15 years. The Henderson Mine was originally developed using a highly mechanized, panel caving mining system. Over the past 10 years, mining methods, equipment and railroad operations have been improved to position Henderson as one of the most productive and lowest cost underground mining operations. At the same time, the mill and concentrator facilities were upgraded to reduce costs and improve product quality. During this time, manpower was reduced from 2000 to 560 employees. These 560 people increased productivity to 54 t (60 st) per total manshift. They reduced operating costs by 50%. And they dramatically improved safety performance. However, as the 1990s approached, the modernization of the Henderson mining and milling complex and the development of the new 7700 mining level became the primary goals to guide Henderson into the 21st century.

The Calmet Process for extraction and recovery of gold and silver from concentrates and high:grade ores has been a commercial reality for over two years. During that time period, almost seventy-five different concentrate (or ore) types have been processed in approximately 200 separate lots (a total of almost 2000 short tons). During commercial operation of the process at the plant in Fountain, Colorado, recovery of gold and silver into <lore' has averaged almost 93% for gold (range 81-98%) and over 90% for silver (range 76-97%) based on a fire assay target and calculated head values.

In 1989, worldwide total mineral industry activity registered advances from 1988. The advances may not have been as noteworthy as in 1988, but they can be regarded as a worthy theme for this article. The momentous political events throughout the centrally planned economy world had only a modest impact on actual 1989 industry performance. But these events have such potential for worldwide changes in economic activity in future years that they dwarf the actual happenings of 1989 in the minerals industry. Perhaps most significant factor here is the rapidity with which these changes have occurred. The end of World War II saw the almost immediate division of the world into major economic blocs. Since then, mineral industry activities and other industrial operations have been governed, to a considerable extent, by this partitioning. The developed market economy nations have operated as a group, the centrally planned economy states as another group. And these two groups essentially have vied for recognition in mineral industry operations in the developing economy states of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. The boundaries of these country blocs were fixed in the late 1940s and early 1950s. They were not markedly altered in the ensuing 40 years. We have seen the establishment of the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, the continued Arab-Israeli confrontations in the Near East, the upheavals surrounding the rise of Moslem Fundamentalism in Iran, and the establishment of Soviet-oriented governments in Cuba and Nicaragua. These events have had notable effects on the world economy. But they have done little to change the pattern of market economy states functioning as a competitive bloc with the centrally-planned economy countries.

ACRS will eliminate most if not all controversies with the IRS over depreciation. 2. Real property now depreciated over 15 years. Component depreciation is not available. 3. Accelerated depreciation is available - a 175% declining balance method with an automatic shift to straight line method at the optimum point in the asset&apos;s life. Alternatively, a taxpayer can elect to use the straight line method.

"INTRODUCTION The so called Porto Maravilha Project consists of the re-urbanization of a 500 ha area in the Rio de Janeiro port region. Several changes in local infrastructure are being implemented, including a significant change in the road system, with the demolition of the former “Via Perimetral” viaduct and construction of 4 new tunnels: • Saúde tunnel - 35 m long (Waimberg et al, 2014); • “Binária tunnel” - 1012 m long; • “Via Expressa” twin tunnels - 1850 m long each way. The tunnels were excavated almost completely in rock using conventional drill and blast methodology and only some short stretches in weathered rock, associated to faults zones, residual soils and marine sediments close to the tunnel portals. During excavation of access shaft and “Via Expressa” and “Binária” tunnels significant ground settlements as well as settlements of buildings founded both on shallow and deep foundations were measured. These values could not be associated to conventional tunneling induced settlement troughs. This paper focuses on the “Via Expressa” tunnels, presenting a brief description of the project as a whole, its geological and geotechnical background, monitoring results, and a discussion of possible causes of the measured settlements. PROJECT DESCRIPTION The Porto Maravilha Project is an integrated multidisciplinary action on behalf of the Rio de Janeiro city council with support from the State and Federal Governments. In addition to creating new conditions for working, housing, transport, culture and leisure for the resident population, it also promotes expressive economic development in the region (Portonovo, 2015). Porto Maravilha Project is carrying out actions for the recovery of the region’s historical heritage, as well as promoting the population´s social and economic development. One of the main benefits of the Porto Maravilha Project is the construction of the new traffic system in the port area, consisting of the Express and Binário roadways. The new project, which will replace the current Perimetral Rodrigues Alves viaduct system, will increase traffic flow capacity by 27%."

Computerized, real -time monitoring had its beginning in the U.S. coal industry in the early 1970&apos;s. Over the last 10 years, developments in technology have made systems available that are capable of monitoring and controlling many mine parameters that can increase safety and production. However, situations currently exist where computerized monitoring systems are not being utilized to their fullest capability. They produce reams of printed output that are not sorted in a useful format, and human operators are not able to react fast enough in emergency situations tn tile large amount of information that the systems generate. A solution is the application of an expert system as the interface with real-time monitoring. An expert system would use an extensive knowledge base and human-type reasoning ability to make decisions on optimum strategies. Expert systems have been applied successfully to problems in other industries, and could provide significant benefits to mine information management systems. The use of an expert system with real-time mine monitoring is discussed in this paper.

"""Operational excellence"" provides a sound foundation for RWE Power AG&apos;s three strategic pillars (innovation, expansion and organic growth). The maintenance and development of operational excellence in lignite mining operations at RWE Power is supported by the Continuous Improvement Process (CIP) ""immer:besser"" (getting better). Obtaining cost reductions with the aid of the CIP as a kind of value-adding self-renewal process to ensure competitive lignite mining operations and lignite-based electricity generation forms the basis for further increases in profitability and growth. Since the beginning of the 1990s, RWE Power has carried out a multitude of re-engineering projects focusing on the efficient shaping of processes with the assistance of external consultants to enable the Company to cope with the considerable need for change by swiftly implementing major efficiency levers. These also include the required adaptation and development of the organization. Since 2004, the Continuous Opencast Mine Improvement Process (""KVT"") has enabled the mines to tap significant cost reduction potential by virtue of their own strength. But there is another issue that has come into focus: the development of performance enhancement options. In 2006, the ""KVT"" process, piloted in the opencast mines, was included in the RWE Power-wide immer:besser (i:b) programme (Figure 1)."

INTRODUCTION Pyrite responds to the flotation reagents normally used in sulfide flotation systems. For example, it is well known that xanthates are good collectors for pyrite, and cyanide, sulfide and hydroxides are depressants. The particular response of pyrite to these and other reagents is used to advantage in several areas. By careful control of depressant and collector additions, pyrite can be separated from other sulfides by flotation. This is of obvious importance in base metal sulfide flotation where pyrite depression is often required to produce a marketable grade concentrate. Flotation of pyrite has long been employed in gold ore processing, and it appears that pyrite flotation from coal may become important in the future (1). It is probably a direct consequence of this relative ease of separation, plus the low economic value of pyrite, that detailed investigations on the chemistry of its flotation and depression are relatively limited. Gaudin (2,3,4) and others, in the mid-1950&apos;s published data on the flotation of pyrite, but detailed or consistent mechanisms were lacking. In 1955, Sutherland and Wark&apos;s book (5) was published, in which a large amount of empirical information, especially earlier work of Wark and Cox, was presented. More recently, in 1968, significant contributions have been made by Fuerstenau et al. (6,7) and Majima and Takeda (El. These papers introduced electrochemical explanations of the effects observed with xanthate and cyanide ions.
