In the current research, isothermal experiments of kinetic analysis were performed at different temperatures (800–1050 °C) and particle sizes (885 to 10,763 μm) to investigate the calcination kinetics of high-purity limestone. Thermal analyses were carried out in a zirconia crucible, 1 cm in height, for different temperatures and particle sizes. The reaction rate coefficients were varied in the 2.2 × 10−5-1.62 × 10−3-m0.6.s−1 range. Moreover, various isothermal kinetic analysis methods were applied to assess the decomposition mechanism and the calcination function governing the process. The modified shrinking core model was found as the best representation of the high-purity limestone kinetic data. The activation energy was evaluated using the Arrhenius curve, and an average value of 86 kJ.mol−1 was obtained.

"The Greater Paris projects involves the creation of a 200km extension of the actual public transport network on the close outskirt of Paris. In 2011, SYSTRA has been awarded the Engineering studies of a 20km underground section in the densely urbanized southeast quarter of the Parisian suburb. In order to both guide the TBM technology choice and identify and mitigate the risk due to soil settlement during tunnel boring, several analysis have been carried out and integrated into a Geographical Information System to share and manage this risk during the successive design phases of the project. The geological context‘s complexity and the Owner‘ requirements have led to the necessity of using an innovative analysis approach, leveraging both the numerical modelling analysis’s accuracy and the analytical method‘s ease of programming and implementation in a GIS, by the mean of the calibration of the analytical approach’ parameters on the FEM results.INTRODUCTIONThe Greater Paris Transport Project foresees the extension of the actual public transport network to the close outskirt of Paris through the extension lines 11 and 14, the creation of a circular new line around Paris - line 15 completed by lines 16 and 18 linking developing territories - and line 17 to Roissy-Charlesde- Gaulle airport.The SOCIETE DU GRAND PARIS (SGP) is the public institution that promotes this project and awards SYSTRA as Engineering for the 15th Line southeast section.Line 15th – South-East sectionIn 2011, the Owner SGP (SOCIÉTÉ DU GRAND PARIS) awarded to SYSTRA the preliminary and detailed design of a 20km-long underground section of Line 15, between the stations of Villejuif-Louis-Aragon and Noisy-Champs. "The Safety Pays in Mining web application, developed by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) Mining Program, helps mines determine the potential costs associated with mining injuries. This web app groups injuries by type, either by the cause of the injury or by the nature of the injury. When the user selects one of over 30 common types of mining injuries, the app provides information on the distribution of costs of workers’ compensation claims for that type of injury. Based on other user inputs, Safety Pays in Mining will estimate the total costs of the selected injuries, including an estimate of additional indirect costs, the estimated impact of total injury costs on mining company profits, and provide some examples of other items (services, equipment) on which companies could spend the savings that result from the prevention of injuries. This paper reviews the Safety Pays in Mining web application by discussing the development of the app, how it is used to show the true costs of mining injuries, and how mines can benefit from using this app. INTRODUCTION Injuries on the job cause pain and suffering. They can also profoundly affect profits and daily operations. In addition to paying direct costs or increased premiums for workers’ compensation insurance, a company might need to pay overtime for other workers to fill an injured worker’s job role, cover training costs for a replacement worker, or divert administrative resources in the wake of an injury. Safety Pays in Mining is a web app that estimates the distribution of these injury costs and assesses the impact that occupational injuries have on a company’s profits. The costs of specific types of occupational injuries in mining are not readily available as mining and insurance companies don’t usually share this information. As a consequence, companies only have cost information based on previous experience with their own employees. Therefore, if a mine never experienced a finger amputation for one of its miners, it would not be aware of the possible costs associated with this type of injury. In addition, injury costs are unique in that the cost distribution is so wide — with half of the injuries in our dataset having mean costs higher than 90th percentile costs — just using the average cost of a specific injury type does not provide adequate information. Some injuries involve immensely high costs, and even though the risk of these high-cost injuries occurring is low, mines need to be aware of their potential impact on their company’s financial health."

The new Lyon-Turin railway project involves the construction of a 57 km twin-tube tunnel between France and Italy. Pini France (project leader) and Systra-SWS are the designers of Construction Site 8 (CO8). This part of the project includes the construction of the tunnel portal on the Villard-Clément platform, two 2.8 km long tubes of the base tunnel in the direction of Saint Martin la Porte, the cross-passages between tubes and the niches. This paper presents the general approach followed to design the temporary support for the base tunnel, cross-passages, and technical rooms. The design of the temporary support accounts for the variability of the ground and water conditions, the excavation attended behavior, the construction planning and the identified geological hazards that could be encountered along the alignment. Particular attention is paid to the intersections between the tunnels both in terms of numerical modelling and construction methods and phases. Two types of intersections are present in the project: the intersections between the cross-passages and the base tunnel and the intersections between the base tunnel and the niches. 3D models have been developed for the tunnel intersections.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated the fundamentals of fatty acid/fuel oil conditioning for improved flotation selectivity. Both conditioning time and intensity can provide optimum flotation selectivity as well as good recovery. Traditional conditioning seeks to optimize conditioning parameters with subsequent recovery of the hydrophobic mineral. In the fatty acid/fuel oil system many silica gangue particles are also rendered hydrophobic by the flotation collector. Fundamental studies have shown that particle-particle collisions transfer the collector reagents selectively to the mineral surfaces with the highest affinity for the reagent. This mechanism deactivates the gangue particles while increasing the collector reagent loading on the selected mineral. The degree of this transformation is directly related to the number of particle-particle collisions which can be controlled through conditioning time or conditioning mixing intensity.

A., as part of its program of quality and productivity optimization and reduction of operating costs, has undertaken tests to utilize alternate energy sources for fuel oil used in its pelletizing plant at Point Ubu, Espirito Santo, Brazil. The energy program undertaken by Samarco consists of two basic steps. The first step was to reduce energy consumption, that is, to improve the thermal efficiency of the process. Secondly, a program was started to substitute the fuel oil with coal.

Since coal has been designated as the short-term answer to the threatening world energy crisis, improved surface mining techniques, along with improved extraction and handling equipment, are needed to increase the amounts that can economically be mined by open pit methods. A dwindling supply of low cost oil and gas have dictated a major rethinking of our energy sources and their use. New methods for open pit coal mining have to be found to increase coal production and to meet more stringent reclamation laws. Modern twin-engine elevating scrapers can play a vital role in meeting these needs. They are readily available, with short delivery times, from several experienced manufacturers of earthmoving equipment. Recent developments of the elevator system have extended its working range to include many of the materials commonly encountered in open pit mining. The paper deals with the advantages of using twin-engine elevating scrapers in the performance of various mining tasks. These tasks range from utility work to the major task of using the scrapers as a primary stripping toot and, of even more importance, a stripping- reclamation tool for, with scrapers, the overburden can be moved and redeposited in the same strata sequence or soil horizon as in its natural state. A recap of current applications of the elevating scraper will be presented, along with proposed uses.

The present study has been conducted in surface limestone mine to select the controllable blasting design parameters affecting the peak particle velocity (PPV) for assessment of ground vibration. The study aims at using two prominent statistical tools, namely, principal component analysis (PCA) and stepwise selection and elimination (SSE) techniques for identifying the key controllable parameters affecting the PPV. For determining the correlation coefficient between blasting design parameters and PPV from 44 field scale trial blasts, multi-variate linear regression (MLR) technique was done. It was found that the PCA and SSE eliminated a huge number of controllable parameters to identify the most important parameters, affecting the PPV. The PCA eliminated 6 number of parameters while SSE eliminated 5 number of parameters, and the coefficients of determination (R2) obtained were 0.616 and 0.584 for PCA and SSE respectively. The predictor equations were evolved, and these equations were used to validate the PPV results for another set of 21 field scale trial blasts. The predictor equations have been found to be fairly accurate in predicting the PPV values. Further, the PCA technique provides very near prediction of PPV with high degree of correlation in comparison to SSE technique. The paper highlights the role of state-of-art statistical tools in selecting the blasting design parameters affecting the PPV in field-scale blasting.

High metal prices and new world trade standards and accounting for environmental liability in financial disclosures are creating markets for metals commodities that are produced using ?green technologies?. A promising "green" gold leaching system uses a polysulfide based lixiviant which is non-toxic and non-polluting. Laboratory testing has demonstrated selective gold extraction rates comparable to those of cyanide. The polysulfide lixiviant is a dilute aqueous solution which can be inexpensively produced from readily available chemical reagents and even mining wastes. The reagent system is self-buffering and maintains the optimal chemical environment for leaching. Treatment of residual leach solutions is not necessary because the lixiviant itself is not toxic, and breaks down as the system equilibrates. Simple closed system boiling is used to recover gold from process solutions. The polysulfide lixiviant can then be readily renewed and recycled back into the system, forming a closed loop system that conserves reagents and energy which minimizes operating costs. Economic projections have shown that the system can be used profitably for standard ore types and grades.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) investigated the use of seismic refraction tomography (SRT) for identifying changes in pillar loading at the Foidel Creek coal mine near Steamboat Springs, CO. The inherent three-dimensional problem of directly imaging coal pillar conditions is reduced to a single plane by considering only the load transmitted from the pillar to the adjacent floor rock. Floor strata velocity tomograms (at two pillar locations) illustrate that loading conditions are non-uniform and non-unique. Also, time sequence monitoring, as the longwall face advanced, demonstrated that SRT can be used to image spatial changes in loading conditions. SRT offers the mining engineer a simple and flexible technique for evaluating pillar conditions, and thus, both present and alternative mine designs.

Economic and at the same time environmentally acceptable mining of small vertical ore bodies and veins to great depths has always been a challenge for miners. The Bauer cutter system, widely used in civil engineering, has been further developed for applications in exploration and mining, to a sustainable system for selective mining with a focus on small vertical ore bodies and veins, as well as residual ore in open pit operations. Current situation of conventional mining of small ore bodies and vertical veins Small ore bodies and vertical or near-vertical ore veins often pose a challenge to the mining industry. The relatively small size of the ore deposit over great depths or lengths, with only limited exposure to the surface makes economical mining difficult. Open pit mining of such ore bodies must either be terminated early because of the high stripping ratio and the enormous environmental impact or is unprofitable from the very beginning. The required massive stripping of waste rock leads to high material hauling times and costs, intensive roadway and bench construction and maintenance, possible safety hazards due to heavy vehicle movement, pit wall stability risks, intensive surface water management and massive waste dump requirements. In addition, it can be assumed that increasingly extensive rehabilitation measures will be required in the future after mine closure. Particularly in vertically oriented magmatic and hydrothermal deposits the technical, economic and environmental limits for further pushbacks, to extend the open pit depth, can lead to an early end of mine life even if a significant quantity of residual ore is left behind. Going underground is only a viable option in a limited number of mines with very high ore values and volumes. The high development cost of an underground mine, as well as the higher underground mining costs, often prevent further mining to greater depths.

Tailings (flotation waste) that is formed during copper production may be considered in the class of valuable wastes due to the amount of copper it contains. Owing to the decreasing grade values in copper ores, utilization of wastes such as tailings that carry certain amounts of copper as secondary sources has become a necessity in both the economic and environmental sense. This study investigated the usage conditions of five different ammonia salts as leaching reactants for the purpose of selective extraction of copper from tailings. For this purpose, the effects of parameters such as leaching temperature and leaching time were examined at different concentrations of ammonium hydroxide, ammonium carbonate, ammonium nitrate, ammonium chloride, and ammonium persulfate. The copper extraction efficiency in the case of using the aforementioned salts by themselves were listed as (NH4)2CO3 (73%) > (NH4)2S2O8 (69%) > NH4OH (64%) > NH4Cl (42%) > NH4NO3 (40%). The highest copper extraction efficiency was obtained in the leaching process that was conducted with the solutions obtained by mixing ammonia salts in the best conditions. Most of the world’s production of natural soda ash comes from the mining and processing of trona found near Green River, WY. The processing of trona ores to ultimately yield a high-quality dense soda ash product and reject the insoluble gangue species, primarily in the form of oil shale, is water and energy intensive. It is speculated, however, that the glass-manufacturing industry, which is the largest consumer of soda ash, may be able to use product of a lower grade and consistent level of the insoluble constituents. Thus, the viability of using sensor-based sorting to produce a beneficiated trona stream that would be fed to calcination was investigated. The study encompassed the preparation of a run-of-mine (ROM) Green River ore sample; selection of specimens sized 25 to 75 mm; imaging of the specimens by sensors based on X-ray transmission (XRT), color and laser-induced fluorescence (LIF); insolubles analysis of the specimens; and a bench-scale sorting test. Results of the study established that a correlation between the color of the individual ore particles and their insoluble content exists, and that a surface-detection-based sensor, particularly LIF, is apparently more suitable than XRT to produce a beneficiated trona stream. The bench-scale sorting test demonstrated that a 65 percent separation efficiency and a 70 percent recovery of trona could be achieved.

"In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. Alternatively, the organic efficiency parameter does consider process economics; however, it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach is introduced which reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure which reflects a better use of performance data. INTRODUCTION Partition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation, and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, and density separators. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of a physical property on which the separation is based (e.g. particle density, size, magnetic susceptibility, etc.). Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic “S” shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution. Other geometric features of the curve are also depicted in Fig. 1, including the high and low closeout (or bypass) values, the midpoint slope, and the separation cut point (property value with 50% recovery). Partition curve analysis was originally proposed to evaluate coal washability (Tromp, 1937). Given the limited computational resources at the time, the analytical methods relied heavily on graphical construction and interpretation of the curve. Owing to the simplicity of the calculation and interpretation, many of these graphical approaches are still widely used for performance analysis today. The most common calculations are based on the slope of the partition curve at the midpoint. Increased slopes correspond to enhanced separation performance, since a perfect separation exhibits a stepwise transition from 0 to 1 at the desired cut point (i.e. an infinitely large slope). One common formulation of this slope, the Ecart Probable (Ep), is derived by evaluating the slope between the 25% and 75% recovery points:"

The North Auckland Line (NAL) in Northland, New Zealand, is being upgraded to pass Hi-Cube containers. The line includes many tunnels and bridges which need to be refurbished to improve structural clearances and line capacity. Tunnel 2 along the line, the Makarau Tunnel, has posed special challenges. Opened in 1898, the tunnel suffered multiple collapses during construction and has shown significant distortion during operation. The tunnel has been repaired many times since opening. Successfully enlarging this delicate and distressed structure has involved historical research, advanced analysis and design, and careful construction. The results provide lessons for dealing with brick lined tunnels and poor ground conditions

Phosphate rock is a naturally occurring mineral which, in upgraded form, is important to both agriculture and industry. Phosphate rock normally must be upgraded before it can be assimilated and used. Most of this upgrading is now carried out by chemical means, largely through the reaction of a strong inorganic acid (primarily sulfuric acid) with the phosphate rock to remove major impurities and to produce soluble phosphate. A less important but yet still commercially significant conversion method involves the thermal reduction of phosphate rock at high temperature in an electric furnace to produce elemental phosphorus. The elemental phosphorus is then converted to usable end products. This conversion route is a more costly method than the chemical route, but it has the advantage of being able to produce chemically pure phosphorus derivatives. On the other hand, the use of phosphate rock for agricultural application-primarily for use as a plant nutrient ingredient for fertilizer -does not require the same level of purity. As a consequence, the chemical method of phosphate rock upgrading is the predominant technique for producing phosphatic fertilizers.

"Truck-shovel systems are the dominant material loading and haulage machinery in open pit mining operations. Optimal selection, sizing, and allocation of this capital intensive equipment is highly desirable for both achieving production targets and improving the mine’s economics. In this study, discrete event simulation technique was applied for modeling material transportation in Golegohar open pit iron ore mine in Iran. Direct observation of the material loading and haulage for duration of three months resulted in statistical modeling of the operation in the form of probability distribution functions. These probability models were used as the inputs of a stochastic simulation model constructed in GPSS/H simulation language. The model was validated through comparison with the actual operation and was used to test different what-if scenarios and sensitivity analysis of the current system. Some modifications in the number of trucks, shovels, and dispatching strategies were proposed. Simulation resulted in considerable improvements in the mine’s production and economics.INTRODUCTION There are three different mechanisms of discrete, continues, and hybrid material transportation in open mines, including but not limited to: i) in-pit crusher and conveyor belts (hybrid), ii) slurry piping (continues) and iii) truck-shovel system (discrete). Although, each mechanism has its advantages, the truck-shovel system is the dominant method of material loading and handling in open pit mines owing to its high production rate, excellent flexibility, relatively low operating and capital costs, and good maintainability. General objectives of optimal equipment selection include: i) meeting the long and short term requirements of production rates, ii) human & equipment safety, iii) environmental protection, and iv) economic operations (Figure 1).The two most important decision factors on a truck-shovel system selection and sizing are the equipment geometry and size. Geometry (equipment width, weight, turning radius, swing angle, etc.) is mostly controlled by mine’s designs and layouts, as well, as operational constraints. After selection of a favorable geometry based on the constraints; the next step is to select the equipment manufacturer. Once the geometry and manufacturers are selected; the next step is to decide on models (e.g. Bucket size) and required number of each unit"

CoaLiquid, Inc. (CLI) has been in the coal- oil-mixture (COM) business for over five (5) years. The initial pilot processing facility was replaced by a 2000 barrel per day commercial production facility in August of 1979. For over two (2) years CLI has been expanding its efforts and conducting large scale production and combustion demonstrations successfully in many locations across the United States. To facilitate the marketing effort, CLI has recently constructed a special trailer containing all equipment needed for a temporary COM retrofit. CoaLiquid has conducted commercial scale combustion demonstrations in the following types of combustion units: kilns, calciners, industrial boilers, blast furnaces and driers.

In this paper, the size-density distribution of coarse middling coking coal (CMCC) with different grinding fineness and flotation concentrates was investigated. Then, the flotation behaviors and liberation characteristics of different size-density fractions in ground CMCC were analyzed, and the different size-density fractions were divided into five categories: mostbeneficial, secondary-beneficial, poorly liberated, insignificant-pollution, and serious-pollution. Based on the content of particles with different liberation characteristics, an evaluation index of the liberation characteristic of ground CMCC, namely, the liberation perfection index (LPI), was proposed. The results indicated that grinding changed the size-density composition of CMCC, which affected the flotation performance. Insufficient grinding and overgrinding were not beneficial to flotation. Insufficient grinding caused a higher content of poorly liberated particles and a lower content of most-beneficial particles. Overgrinding increased the content of serious-pollution particles and reduced the content of most-beneficial particles. The size order of the LPI values of different ground CMCC was consistent with the flotation efficiency, and the LPI values of the other two similar samples were overall positively correlated with their flotation performance, suggesting that the method is universal.

The Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has developed a field test unit (FTU) which dewaters mine and/or mineral processing by-product slurries. The feed material (by-product slurry) is mixed with a known quantity and specific type of synthetic polymer (usually a polyacrylamide) to induce flocculation in a continuous operation. The flocculated material passes over a specific number and size of slotted stationary screens which separates the flocculated solid material from the "clean" water. The "static screens" are positioned at a fixed angle to maximize flow capacity and capture of the solids content. An investigation was conducted at an industrial crushed stone operation located near Birmingham, AL, to determine if the Bureau's FTU could successfully dewater the waste slurry generated during grinding and sizing operations at this facility. The investigation showed that waste slurries could be dewatered to 50 pct solids, at a polymer cost of approximately $0.85/ton of dry solids treated, and resulted in approximately 85 to 95 pct solids recovery. The dewatered material continued to consolidate and reached 69 pct solids in 24 h. Presently, the waste slurry generated at this facility is discarded into impoundments. However, this research has identified the recovered waste as an economically marketable product.
