The prestressed concrete industry in particular, and the precast concrete industry to some extent, are rank newcomers to the concrete construction field compared to the cement, ready-mixed or concrete masonry industries. This young industry reflects its youth and vigor in its enthusiasm, optimism and the belief that it can reach any goal it chooses to set -- and it is setting its sights high. The prestressed and precast concrete industry fully expects to become the major structural and architectural material by the 1980's. Before exploring how the industry expects to reach this goal, a brief look at the origins and the growth of the industry may be useful in an evaluation of the feasibility of this goal. It was always recognized that concrete, strong and efficient for supporting loads which cause compression, was weak and inefficient when used to carry loads which induce tension. Thus the reason for reinforced concrete in which the concrete efficiently carries the compression in a flexural member while low grade steel bars reinforce the concrete in the areas 'of tensile stress. (Fig. 1). The steel being relatively inexpensive, can passively, but quite effectively carry tensile force while the concrete carries compression. The concrete in contact with the reinforcing also protects the steel from corrosion and acts as insulation to provide a superior "built-in" fire resistance. The major disadvantage of reinforced concrete relative to its main competitor, steel, is its weight in relation to its load-carrying capacity. The clays in Eastern Washington occur in a variety of forms and are extracted for uses in Face Brick, paper coatings, and aggregates. Not in large volumes in comparison to other areas, not even from impressive large mines. However, mans utilization of these clays has progressed from historical clay tablets to the present technically oriented manufactured products of today. White Face Brick, perhaps the whitest produced anywhere is the unique product produced by INTERPACE CORPORATION's Mica Plant from these unusual clays. It is this basic characteristic feature of the clay's in the Mica area that differentiate them from the other clay's in this belt. ORIGIN The significant properties of clay's used in Face Brick are plasticity, fired color, fired strength, dry and fired shrinkage, the PCE or Pyrometeric Cone Equivalent, and extrudability. Testing clay's for these properties is standard laboratory procedure. No two clays are alike, and seldom can one clay be substituted for another. Mica White Clays respond favorable to all these properties, but more especially, the Mica Clays fire to a brilliant white color, from almost the natural state. The geologic history of Eastern Washington is largely conjectural because of the absence of rocks representing segments of geologic time. The oldest rocks in this area are the argillaceous and arenaceous sedimentary rocks which have been slightly metamorphosed. These rocks have been correlated with the Belt Series of the Pre-Cambrian age, although some may be older. Calcium carbonate is one of the highest volume industrial mineral products in North America. It is used in filler and extender applications, roofing products, floor tile, glass manufacture, etc. Calcium carbonate has over a dozen major filler and extender applications plus a host of minor uses. North American consumption of calcium carbonate fillers and extenders in 1991 is estimated at over 5,000,000 tons valued in excess of $400,000,000. There were five major suppliers of calcium carbonate fillers in the Middle Atlantic region in 1988 :?Bestone, Genstar, National Gypsum, Thomasville Stone and Lime, and White Pigment. With the exception of Genstar's Maryland operation, all of these operations are within a few miles of York, Pennsylvania. The Millington Group (TMG) purchased the assets of Bestone Corporation in February of 1989. TMG then seized the opportunity to strengthen its business position by acquiring National Gypsum's and White Pigment's Pennsylvania filler businesses in December, 1989 and July, 1990, respectively. By July of 1990 TMG's filler business acquisitions included six quarries and one underground mine, totaling over 1,200 acres and three processing facilities. The assets were restructured into two new companies - Delta Carbonate, Inc. and Penroc, Inc. (hereafter collectively referred to as Delta). Delta identified the assets of the three predecessor companies as undervalued from the outset. The initial phase of Delta's turnaround strategy was to reassess the combined mineral. mining, processing, transportation and marketing assets. The second phase was to effectively integrate these resources in order to exploit their inherent synergy.

The typical tunnel boring machine in use on today's tunnel project uses 15'2-inch diameter cutters at a nominal load of 45 kips per cutter. The cutterhead rotates at a speed of 120 over D revolutions per minute where D is the cutterhead diameter in feet. The typical machine operates about 50 percent of the time. Delivery of a new machine takes 12 to 15 months. The TBM is a specialized tool and not applicable to all jobs. There is a range of job conditions that limit the economic use of a TBM. The machine should provide a thrust per cutter at least twice the compressive strength of rock in psi and up to three times the rock strength is required if in "granitic rocks." The rock strength in psi must be at least three times the cover above the tunnel in feet or the machine may stick. For example, 2,500 feet of cover requires at least 7,500 psi rock to avoid problems. When the RQD's over a significant distance of the project are less than 50, the TBM becomes support-bound. When a large percentage of the time is spent waiting while the ground is supported, the TBM cannot perform well (See Figure 1). This problem increased inversely with tunnel diameter. We are finding that increasing the RPM's does not significantly increase progress. The increased RPM results in a substantial decrease in cutter penetration. The explanation for this decrease appears to be vibration, cutterhead drag, or lack of stiffness in the cutterhead (See Figure 2).

One of the analytical problems in exploration geochemistry is the choice of a method of sample attack which would be rapid, simple and reliable in terms of precision and discrimination between different concentration levels of elements sought. The wet sample attacks currently used in analysis of silicate rocks vary from total decomposition to leaching by weak extractants. The total decomposition of such materials is usually achieved either by alkaline fusion or hydrofluoric acid attack. The first method requires the use of platinum vessels which is both expensive and slow for batch operation. The second type of attack is more widely applied in rock geochemistry1, but it is still relatively slow for exploration purposes and requires extra care (especially when hydrofluoric acid is used in mixture with perchloric acid). Considerable improvement in speed can be achieved by using the sample attacks which release only part of the metal present in a rock.2,4 One of such attacks is the leaching of pulverized rocks by hot aqua regia.3 Another technique widely used in geochemical prospecting involves fusion of the samples with potassium pyrosulfate (or bisulfate) followed by an acid leach of the malt .5 One of the advantages of these techniques is the use of glassware in decomposition stage which considerably increases the analytical productivity. It should be noted that partial chemical attacks tend to extract from a rock mainly the non-silicate metal which may give results more significant for exploration purposes than the analysis for total metal.

DR iron') is a generic term for metallized product that results from the direct or solid state reduction of iron ore. In direct reduction, iron oxides are reduced to metallic iron in the solid state without an intermediate melting step. MIDREX ® Iron is the DR iron material produced in the MIDREX ® Direct Reduction Process. Except for some thermal and mechanical degradation, the external physical form of as-reduced DR iron is the same as the feed material. Chemically, oxygen associated with iron is removed leaving a very porous structure. Figure 1 is the scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the internal surface of a MIDREX Iron pellet obtained from a Swedish oxide pellet during reduction at 760 °C. Figure 2 is the SEM of a polished and etched cross-section through the same pellet showing the amount of intraparticle porosity. As a result of this high porosity, apparent density of DR iron is relatively low, typically a¬round 2 g/cm3, and specific surface is extremely high, typically around 1.0 m2/g or more. Both density and specific surface depend on the raw materi¬al and the operating conditions of the direct reduction plant. Normally, more than 97% of the available iron is reduced into metallic iron with the rest mainly in the form of wustite (FeO). During direct reduction, the gangue in the iron remains essentially unchanged. Removal of oxygen and the corre¬sponding reduction in weight result in a slightly higher percentage gangue in the product than in the raw material.

In a minerals-recovery context, the object of exercising control over milling operations must be threefold, 1) To achieve maximum recovery at 2) minimum operating costs and 3) making maximum use of installed equipment, Milling is one of a sequence of operations which have as their objective the economic recovery of minerals from mined ores, All operations in the sequence are interdependent and each is both influenced by and itself affects all other unit processes. The part which grinding plays in achieving each of the above objectives is indicated in the following analysis: In South Africa, the most important mining operations are still the gold mines, A vast reservoir of knowledge and experience in treating the Witwatersrand and associated ores has been accumulated. and recoveries are consistently high, However residue values do vary and frequently this is due to fluctuations in the degree of grind, The significance of changes in residue values is indicated by the following example: On a modern mine, the residue values varied from 0,25 to 0,33 dwi; per 2000 lb, during a period of 6 months, The cash value of the gold thus lost varied therefore between $0.44 and $0.58 per 2000 lb, ton. A residue which assays 0.30 dwt per ton would contain approximately 0.26 dwt as undissolved gold and 0,040 dwt per ton as dissolved gold present in residual solution after filtration. This dissolved gold loss is a function of efficiency of filtration and varies from 0.030 to 0,.070 dwt per ton of residue.

The story of the Aitik mine begins in the early thirties. At that time blocks of low grade chalcopyrite impregnations were found in Swedish Lapland not far from the present mine, some 40 miles north of the arctic circle in the vicinity of the iron ore field at Gällivare. The ore prospect was viewed upon several times. By means of geophysical studies and an extensive diamond drilling programme during the end of the fifties and the beginning of the sixties a huge low grade ore body was discovered under the muskeg overburden. In 1965 55 million tons of ore with 0.5 % Cu was known to a depth of 160 ft. In 1970 the ore reserves had increased to 165 million tons with 0.40 g, Cu at a depth of 400 ft. Decision to develop the mine and to start production at an annual production of 2,2 million tons was made in 1965. A mine and concentrating plant, the A section, went on stream in 1968. In 1970 decision was made to expand the production with 3,3 million tons pr year. A second section of the plant, the B section, went on stream during the end of 1972 and the beginning of 1973 The production in the initial plant has been increased to 3,1 million tons pr year and during 1974 the combined A and B sections are expected to treat' about 7,2 million tons of ore. The two sections will treat 10,000 and 13,000 tons per day.

To mitigate and control the combined sewer over-flows from 17 outfalls in Detroit, MI, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights, MI and eight outfalls in Redford Township MI, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department (DWSD) completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km (7-mile) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. A small portion of combined sanitary and storm sewers serve the majority of the Rouge Valley water-shed. This includes Detroit, MI and most of the western suburbs. The Northwest Interceptor (NWI), that extends between Eight Mile Road and Ford Road and roughly parallel to the Rouge River, intercepts sanitary sewage and some wet weather flows from trunk sewers in the tributary areas for transport to the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for treatment. During extreme storm events, when the capacity of the NWI is exceeded, the excess combined sewer and overflow (CSO) over-flows into the Rouge River through 17 outfalls to local rivers. The purpose of the Upper Rouge Tunnel system (URT) is to capture and significantly reduce the uncontrolled CSO from these 17 outfalls in Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township. Few members of the general public have a clear understanding of mineral resources. Most people do not know how minerals are mined or why they must be extracted from many diverse locations. Many people acquire knowledge of mineral development from mass media sources with incomplete details or obvious anti-mining bias. The California Mineral Education Foundation was formed in 1991 to provide educational opportunities for the public and industry. There have been major changes in earth science teaching requirements for kindergarten through 12th grade (K-12) curricula since the passage of California Senate Bill 813 in 1983. Model graduation standards, curriculum standards and the state science framework mandate substantial coverage of geoscience topics. The California State Commission on Teacher Credentialing has completed changes in multiple subject and single subject science credentials which will require more geoscience preparation for all teachers. The need for pre-service and in-service education in geoscience is at an all time high. Teachers must have continuing education to maintain their credentials and many are now seeking information in geoscience. The California Mineral Education Foundation designed and conducted the California Mineral Education Conferences held in August 1991 and 1992. The conferences involved lectures and field trips on mining geology, environmental problems and political concerns. Master teachers were employed to share how they get across mineral resource concepts in the classroom. Ninety-six percent of the participants stated that they had changed to a more positive perception of mining after taking the three day course.

Lateritic gold has been the object of study only for a very few years, though nuggets have been mentioned in earlier works even as early as 1984 by Hartt in Brazil. In Mato Grosso State, lateritisation is intense, as is common in all tropical forest areas of the world. Exploration has revealed the presence of recoverable "nugget gold" of variable sizes (30 - 200 gms) but frequently of good size (0 - 40 gms), especially near Cuiaba and Alta Floresta regions. In both of them the host system is a lateritised breccia indicative of a fault or shear zone breccia, though in different lithological domains. The Cuiaba occurrences are phyllitic and show a profile as follows, from top to bottom: 1) Compact ferralite crust. 2) Oolitic to pisolitic compact crust (+ some gold). 3) Mottled concretionary laterite crust. 4) Lateritised "eluvial material" (gold nuggets). 5) Mottled patchy to banded laterite. 6) Banded lateritised phyllite with lenticular to banded goethite. 7) Altered red goethitic phyllite, with quartz veins (+ fine gold). 8) Unaltered grey phyllite with quartz veins (Protore). The Alta Floresta-Juruena River occurrences are volcano-sedimentary and show a profile as follows: 1) Deep brown siltitic, argillaceous and arenaceous material with organic matter (+ gold). 2) Modular and concretionary laterite, compact and indurated, with arsenophyrite in quartz fragments (gold nuggets). 3) Band with silty-clayey matrix and arenaceous in nature. 4) Bedrock meta-arcosian arenite. 5) Volcano-sedimentary with rhyodacites and andesitic basalts, with intercalations of arkosic and greywacke nature. Breccias and quartz veins, and granites associated in different portions (Protore).

The Klondike symbolized one of mankind's driving forces - the desire to lay one's hands on a scarce resource, gold, in that case - and in doing so to make some money along the way. It can be argued that construction aggregates - a once lowly and ignored sector of the natural resource industries - have become the desired targets of their own "Klondike." This began in the 1970s and accelerated to a frantic pace in the 1980s. The scope of industrial minerals is very wide. It ranges from high value minerals such as talc, bentonite and kaolinite to the truly humble minerals of sands and gravels, limestones and granites. Their major end uses are in construction aggregates. A rich variety of different mineral types all make good construction aggregates. However, those successfully used have two fundamentals in common: • Their technical characteristics are appropriate for the requirements of their end use. • They are located within an economic distance from the market. The North American market This is the largest construction ag¬gregate market in the world. Consumption in 1990 reached 2.2 Gt/a(2.5 billion stpy). This rate of consumption has grown steadily over the past decades. In the United States, from 1963 to 1989, it averaged a 1.6% compound growth rate. Within this long-term trend, there are business cycles, because aggregate demand is closely linked to economic strength or weakness. The North American market also displays the greatest per capita demand for aggregates when compared to the major industrial economies (Table 1).

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, WMATA, has constructed over 92 revenue miles of rapid transit facilities including some 14 miles of rock tunnel and 12 miles of earth tunnel. The system map is shown in Figure 1. During construction it is not unusual for contractor to encounter ground conditions resulting in major problems and extra cost. Problems such as major rockfalls and a "stuck" boring machine in squeezing rock are not unusual. In recent years, faced with additional tunnel construction projects, the Authority has sought newer tunneling methods which might be less costly. One new method which has been tried is NATM, the New Austrian Tunnel¬ing Method. NATM, which is applicable to both soft ground, mixed face and rock tunneling, relies on miners and comparatively small machines to excavate in conventional ways, but it is unique in its methods of obtaining "stand-up" time at the excavated face and its method of using shotcrete as an initial lining, frequently with a drainage system to reduce hydro-static pressure on the final lining. Lower costs result from use of a cast-in-place concrete liner, and from a reduction in the number of work operations at the mine heading which provides better daily production. WMATA has recently completed three twin bore tunnels constructed by NATM technology. The first was the Wheaton Tunnel and Section, followed by the tail track tunnel to total some 4200 linear feet cut through jointed rock up to 270 feet below ground surface, and the last was in soft ground at Fort Totten. Placer mining in Alaska had a desultory inception at Sumdum in 1869 and, during the years 1880 to 1896, received thin nourishment from the readily exhausted gold placers at Juneau and the longer- lived deposits in the Circle, Fortymile, and Rampart Districts. Finally, in 1897, the great Klondike discovery in Canada's Yukon Territory brought thousands of gold seekers to the Far North. These men, in successive, far-reaching gold rushes, found the large, rich gold deposits at Nome, Fairbanks, and Iditarod, as well as many smaller placers. The hectic rushes during the years from 1898 to 19 10 were comprised of hundreds, sometimes thousands, of "stampeders," as they were called. Since very many Alaskan creeks, from the crest of the Brooks Range in the north to the Pacific Ocean in the south, carry at least a few flakes of gold, there was ample seed to start a new stampede. Of the 100s of reported "strikes," nearly 50 became more or less important placer mining districts; by 1910 they had produced about 184.2 fine Mg (6.5 million fine oz) of gold; the all- time peak production year was 1906. A few of the miners and prospectors prospered, but the total value of all gold produced failed, by a wide margin, to cover the aggregate costs incurred by them in the undeveloped Territory of Alaska. On the other hand, the traders with their readily salable supplies of food, tools, and hardware and the freighters with their teams of dogs or horses and boats of all kinds profited throughout the era of stampede.

In this paper, the results of mathematical modeling of casing pipes decontamination from radio-active new mineral forms directly in boreholes using hydrochloric and hydro-silicic-fluoric acids are presented. Modeling for highly and low radioactive coatings on the walls of casing pipes of Anastasievka oil-and-gas deposit was performed using GEMS software, based on the method of Gibbs energy minimization. Calculations have shown that thorianite and goethite, that are present in low-active crusts, detected in casing pipes uplifted from comparatively low depths, are well dissolved in hydrochloric acid, but radiobarite is almost insoluble. For the same acid concentrations, almost all radiobarite of high-active coatings detected in pipes uplifted from considerable depth is dissolved. To evaluate the possibility of decontamination of pipes from radiobarite of low-active coatings, modeling of crust dissolution under the action of H2SiF6 has been performed. The results have shown that for acid concentrations of more than 13 % almost all Ra and Ba are dissolved while all iron and thorium remains in goethite-thorianite solid solution. For the same acid concentration, almost all radiobarite from high-active coatings is dissolved. Therefore, no reagent allows decontamination of pipes from coatings of both types. It seems that successive or simultaneous use of both reagents (HCl and H2SiF6) in certain ratio is required. To clarify this issue, further experimental and model investigations are necessary. The issue of decontamination of casing pipes from galena that is present in high-active crusts also needs to be clarified.

A fire in a coal mine conveyor belt entry represent a major safety and health risk to miners. Fighting belt entry fires can be a commanding effort. If there is a failure of one aspect in the fire fighting needs such as a dissimilar hose-valve connection, then it can result in the inability to extinguish a fire. Fire incident data compiled over nearly 30 years for underground coal mines shows that fires in belt entries account for 15-20 percent of the total number of fires. Fires in the belt entries of coal mines have resulted in injuries and fatalities. New regulations have been promulgated that require an unplanned fire not extinguished within 10 minutes of discovery to be reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). A fire that is not extinguished within several minutes may take hours or days to extinguish or may require sealing a section or the mine in some cases. The current fire protection regulations in the U.S. Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Title 30, Part 75 are designed to prevent or control the fire hazards present in a belt entry. These requirements and other factors affecting belt entry fires are discussed, including fire detection and warning, fire suppression devices, type and location of fire fighting equipment, waterlines, and cleanup and removal of combustible materials. The fire suppression systems used to extinguish/control a belt fire and the effect of ventilation on the propagation of conveyor belt fires are also discussed.

INTRODUCTION AND SUMMARY This short paper deals with the history of the Nickel Plate Mine from 1898 to 1987, with the major focus on the time period 1984 to 1987. Operations from 1898 to 1955 are reviewed in a cursory manner with the emphasis on some interesting points in the early 20th century. A review of the major exploration work carried out in 1984 to 1987 is presented and the process of moving the project through feasibility, government permitting and construction is described. The Hedley gold camp is situated approximately 40 kilometres east-southeast of Princeton, in southern British Columbia. The area has had a long history of gold mining and between 1902 and 1955 approximately 1.5 million ounces of gold were won from several mineralized skarn orebodies. Most production came from the Nickel Plate and Hedley Mascot mines. AN EARLY TO MID 20TH CENTURY SUMMARY The Nickel Plate is one of the oldest mines in the province. The mine had operated from 1904 to 1930 and, after a period of shutdown, from 1934 to 1955. The mine was revived in 1967 for exploration and. will resume production during the first half of 1987. In the first period the Yale Mining Company and Daly Reduction Company operated for six years and Hedley Gold Mining Company for twenty-one. In the second period the mine was operated by the Kelowna Exploration Company Limited and Kelowna Mines Hedley Limited for twenty-one years. In the present period the mine has been revived by Mascot Gold Mines Limited.

INTRODUCTION Under a Federal grant by the Urban Mass Transit Administration (UMTA) (80%), and sponsored by the State of New York (200), Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority is constructing a 10.3 km (6.4 mile) light rail rapid transit system in Buffalo, New York. The $450 million project, which began construction in the Spring of 1979, is unique in rail transit alignment designs in the U.S.A. and the first predominantly underground light rail system in North America. The Buffalo project is unique in that the first phase of the expandable system follows the alignment of Main Street and is on the surface in a proposed 1.6 km (1.0 mile) pedestrian mall in the downtown business district. The alignment then progresses northward into a cut-and-cover portal and standard double-box configuration for 2.74 km (1.7 miles) at a depth of 9.1-10.7 m (30-35 ft) and subsequently drops into bedrock at depths of 18.3-27.4 m (60 to 90 ft). The 5.63 km (3.5 mile) rock tunnel section consists of two single tunnels 4.88 m (16.0 ft) nominal finished diam. and includes five stations. The rock tunnel line section was divided into a north and south contract of 2 316 m (7,600 ft) and 3 243 m (10,640 ft), respectively. When exploration shows a mineral deposit to be of importance, the subsequent work of defining the limits or boundaries of the ore body and preparing it for the extraction of the mineral is termed development (Young, 1946). In underground mining, development also connotes the work that is involved in opening up a deposit preparatory to stoping or productive operations. In this section, mine development is defined to include all studies and operations that will enable a sound evaluation of an explored ore body from the technical and financial standpoints. Though the ultimate objective of all mine development activities is the same, the scope and detail of these activities vary depending on the type of ore body (e.g., flat bodies, lenses and sheets, massive deposits, narrow veins, and bedded deposits), and the method of working the deposit (e.g., under- ground or surface methods or a combination of both of the methods). Therefore, the various contributions in section 3 address such topics as long-range planning, feasibility studies, and valuation for many types of ore bodies and different mining methods. This introductory review is divided into three major parts. In the first part, long-range planning aspects are briefly discussed with .an emphasis on current trends that affect mine planning. In the second part, an overview is provided of the contents in the mine development and valuation section. In the last part, remarks are made on the status, scope, and future of quantitative and computer methods in mine planning and development.

The purpose of this research was to investigate airborne coal mine dust characteristics in order to assess the possibility of contribution of these characteristics to the incidence of coal workers' pneumoconiosis (CWP). The characteristics studied included physical (mass concentration and size distribution), chemical (elemental composition), and mineralogical (quartz and kaolinite content) variables of the dust. The results are based primarily upon analysis of the characteristics of 99 impactor samples from 18 mines in seven states. Because the eight stages of the impactor span the range of dust sizes up to 20 microns, the characteristics analyzed should represent respirable dust characteristics well and also provide size-dependent representations of the characteristics. In general, the patterns of mass concentration and size distribution in the various mines studied were similar with mass concentrations being high downwind of the continuous miner. The concentrations and size distributions were more variable upwind of the continuous miner, apparently as a result of the variations in the dust conditions in the working section. Significant size effects on the elemental and mineralogical content are shown in the data. Concentrations of most of the elements decrease as size decreases. However, minerals content increases as the dust size decreases. Regional variations of elemental and mineralogical content are also significant. Quartz and kaolinite contents are small in regions with low incidences of CWP. However, the elements of Cu and Zn are high by comparison to their content in high-incidence coal fields and may have the effect of protecting against the disease.
