INTRODUCTION The Uranium Epidemiology Study at the University of New Mexico was initiated in 1977 with the objective of assessing health effects of uranium mining in the Grants, New Mexico, area. The planned approach was a cohort study of mortality that would capitalize on the availability of health records at the Grants Clinic. During the first year, emphasis was placed on determining the feasibility of the proposed study: Were adequate records available? What was the quality of available information? Could a cohort be established? The first year's work confirmed the study's feasibility (Buechley, 1979). Subsequent efforts have focused on the health and exposure data base and comprehensive follow-up. A retrospective cohort study of early miners is in progress; a prospective cohort study of miners who began working under the current Federal standard is planned. This report will summarize the current status of the Uranium Epidemiology Study. A chronology of the study's activities follows (Table 1). TABLE 1. BACKGROUND Uranium Mining in New Mexico The Grants, New Mexico, uranium belt measures some 110 by 25 miles in Cibola, McKinley, and Sandoval counties (Kelley, 1963). The three chief mining districts are, from east to west, Laguna, Grants, and Gallup. Average annual production was about 5,500 tons, or 45% of United States uranium, from 1966 through 1978. Despite a drop in this figure in 1979, to 40%, New Mexico still leads the nation in uranium reserves and production (Hatchell, 1981). In 1918 carnotite, a yellow uranium vanadate, was identified in the Shiprock area (Chenoweth and Learned, 1980; N.M. Energy and Minerals Department, 1981). It received little attention at the time because of its apparently limited volume. In 1950 an important uranium outcropping was discovered by chance in limestone at Haystack Butte, northwest of Grants. In 1951 deposits were discovered in sandstone at Poison Canyon, north of Grants, and at Jackpile, northeast of Laguna. In 1955 finding of radioactive cuttings at an abandoned oil test site near Ambrosia Lake led to drilling and discovery of the first underground deposits (Melancon, 1963). Ore bodies were also found near Church Rock in the 1950's (Rautman, 1977). A uranium rush followed. At various times during 1952-1962, 60 mines and 5 mills were in operation (Gay, 1963). In the early 1960's the price of uranium fell, and many miners left the area. Subsequent market fluctuations have produced shutdowns and consolidations, development and expansion. Emery is a rock that at one time held a large share of the abrasives market. The introduction of synthetic abrasives, however has forced it to settle for only certain niches in the marketplace. This loss of market share is due mainly to the higher amounts of impurities and weaker internal structure that naturally occurring minerals have compared to manmade materials. The use of rocks and minerals as abrasives dates back to early man, who used flint, quartz, and other natural materials to fabricate various tools. During the 19th century, with the Industrial Revolution imminent, the character of the abrasives industry was changed forever as synthetics were introduced. Frank B. Norton is credited with producing the first manmade abrasive when, in 1855, he manufactured a vitrified grinding wheel using emery grit and clay. Before Norton's accomplishment emery had been the only commercially available abrasive. The latter part of the 20th century has seen synthetics capture an increasing share of the abrasives market from natural materials. The term emery is believed to have been derived from the words emeri (French), smeriglio (Italian), and smiris (Greek). The term corundum, for the principal mineral of emery, seems to have originated from kauruntaka, the Indian name for the mineral. GEOLOGY Emery is a gray to black, granular rock comprised of various minerals including corundum (A1,0,), an iron-bearing mineral (usually magnetite-Fe,O,, hematite-Fe,O,, or hercynite- FeAI,O,), and several trace impurities such as mullite, titania, silica, and magnesia. The hardness of emery normally ranges between 7 and 9 on the Mohs scale, depending on its mineral com- position and level of impurities. Corundum, the hardest mineral in emery, typically has a hardness of 9. The specific gravity of emery ranges from 3.2 to 4.5, also depending on mineral composition and purity. The crystallography of each mineral contained in emery differs somewhat. Corundum exhibits an hexagonal crystal structure, whereas magnetite forms within the isometric system, frequently as octahedral crystals. Hercynite, an iron spinel, is also isometric. Hematite has an hexagonal structure but often is found as botryoidal and reniform masses. Principal deposits of commerical emery are found in the United States, Turkey, and Greece. In the United States two emery producers in the Westchester County-Peekskill area and one in the Cortlandt County area of New York closed their mines in the late 1980s. Commercial production in the United States now comes only from the western Cascade Range in Oregon. The emery in New York has a typical A1,0, content of 41.5%. Most of the rock is not true emery because it contains a mixture of spinel and magnetite but very little corundum. The deposits are of Late Ordovician-Early Silurian age and consist of veins in which emery is mixed with olivine, pyroxene, and hornblende. The veins evidently were formed by contact metamorphism and are surrounded by Precambrian schists that contain mica, sillimanite, cordierite, garnet, and quartz. The deposits in Oregon were formed during Miocene time by the contact metamorphism of ferrunginous bauxite by intrusive lamprophyric dikes and plugs. Emery is found in thin layers bordering these tabular dikes, which are usually oriented perpendicular to bedding, and in "surficial placer deposits. The emery deposits in Turkey occur as small, massive, lens- shaped bodies and as surficial placers. They are believed to have formed during Permian and Triassic times. In Greece the principal site of emery production is at Cape Emeri on the Island of Naxos. These deposits consist of lenticular masses of emery surrounded by marble. They originated during Mesozoic time, evidently by metasomatic replacement. Smaller deposits on several other Aegean islands were formed by the metamorphism of bauxite or other alumina-rich materials.

In a dispersion of particles in liquid a net charge will develop at the particle-liquid interface. This surface charge is usually due to the adsorption of charged material from solution. The existence of this surface charge gives rise to the formation of the electric double layer of counter-ions which surrond the charged particle. The particle surface charge and the electrostatic repulsion which exists between similarly charged particles is the primary stabilization mechanism for lyophobic colloids (1). The separation of charge which occurs at the particle-liquid interface gives rise to several dynamic phenomena associated with colloidal systems or with solid-liquid interfaces in general. These phenomena are known as electrokinetic phenomena and the four classic electrokinetic phenomena are; electrophoresis, electroosmosis, streaming potential, and sedimentation or Dorn potential. The actual driving force for electrokinetic phenomena is not the surface charge per se, but the charge at the interface between the liquid which is hydrodynamically bound to the particle surface and the bulk fluid. This interface is known as the slipping plane or the plane of shear and the potential at this interface is the zeta potential (2). The factors linking the electrokinetic phenomena is that they involve a relative motion between the liquid and the charged particle or solid surface and the driving force is the zeta potential of the solid. In addition to the four classic electrokinetic phenomena there are two additional electrokinetic effects in disperse systems; the electro-acoustic effects. When an alternating electric field is applied to a cooloidal dispersion the particles will move in the field due to their net zeta potential. If there is a density difference between the particles and the fluid this motion will result in the development of an acoustic wave. The effect was discovered at Matec and has been termed the Electrokinetic Sonic Amplitude or ESA (3). ESA is the pressure amplitude generated by the colloid per unit applied electric field strength and has SI units of pascals per volt per meter. When an alternating pressure field (acoustic wave) is applied to a colloidal dispersion the inverse of the ESA effects occurs. A density difference between the disperse phase and the continuous phase leads to a relative motion between the particles and the surrounding liquid. This means that there will be a periodic displacement between the charged particle and the oppositely charged counter-ions in the electric double year. This displacement results in the development of an alternating dipole moment at the frequency of the applied field. This effect is termed the Ultrasonic Vibration Potential or UVP and was first predicted for electrolyte solutions by Debye in 1933 (4). UVP is measured in units of volts per unit velocity amplitude of the applied acoustic field or volts per meter per second. In 1938, Rutgers (5) and Hermans (6) pointed out that the effect would also be present in colloidal dispersions. A detailed theory for UVP effects in colloids, also called CVP, was first presented by Enderby in 1951 (7). Extensive studies of the UVP in electrolytes have been carried out by Yeager et al (8). Recently, O'Brien (9) has developed a general theoretical treatment of electro- acoustic effects in colloids and has derived a reciprocal relation linking ESA and CVP effects. The most commonly studied electrokinetic phenomena is electrophoresis. Electrophoresis is the movement of charges particles in an applied electric field. The velocity of the particle divided by the applied electric field strength is the electrophoretic mobility of the particle. The zeta potential can be calculated from this mobility (2). The magnitude of both the ESA and CVP effects are directly proportional to the electrophoretic mobility of the particles. The mobility determined by the two electro-acoustic effects is the dynamic or AC mobility of the particles.

Introduction In 1969, the US devalued the dollar. This action, over the ensuing four years, resulted in the deregulation of the price of gold. It also resulted in the rebirth of the US gold mining industry. The extreme inflation of the 1970s led to a dramatic increase in the price of precious metals. Consequently an increased interest in the exploration for and mining of gold has occurred. The enthusiasm began among the few existing producers who had survived on marginal profits during a prolonged period of fixed prices and constantly rising costs. Then came the newcomers. They saw the opportunity to enter an industry that historically had been characterized by small operations with low capital costs. It was not until the late 1970s that large mining companies recognized that investment in gold projects could generate cash flows that previously were associated only with world class deposits. Today, gold mining has tremendous appeal for the entire mining community, despite the dramatic price drop from 1980-81 levels. There are even major firms with no mining experience attempting to gain a foothold. But how easy is it to enter the US gold mining industry? What are the basic factors that influence the economics, and what are they likely to be for the remainder of the decade? How has the industry changed, and what is the composition of the active companies? An examination of the industry will help to answer these questions. US Gold Mining History The current gold rush is actually the fifth in the 208-year history of the US. The first recorded commercial mining of gold occurred in the Southeast in 1799. It produced from small, yet relatively rich placer deposits. The famous California gold rush of 1848 placed the US as a major producer with 62.2 t (2 million oz) of output by 1850. More than 93.3 t (3 million oz) was mined by 1853, equivalent to 63% of world production. But the richest placers were soon depleted. By the end of the Civil War, annual production had declined to well below 62.2 t (2 million oz). The government then relaxed prices and the industry again began to recover. The 1870-80s saw the great mines of the California Mother Lode and Grass Valley brought into production. This was followed by development of Nevada's Comstock, which later became one of the world's largest producers. Discovery of gold at Cripple Creek in 1892, coupled with technological advances in the use of large dredges in the California placers, resulted in significant production increases. And, with the expansion of the Homestake mine at Lead, SD, in 1898, US output again surpassed the 93.3-t (3 million-oz) level. By 1905, produc¬tion climbed to 124.4 t (4 million oz) with the addition of the Alaskan deposits, new output at Goldfields, NV, and the introduction of the cyanidation process. During World War I, the government forced the shutdown of gold mines. By 1920, total production had dropped to little more than 62.2 t (2 million oz). Many mines remained closed until the Great Depression. This, combined with the devaluation of the US dollar in 1934, resulted in a gold price increase to about $1.13/g ($35 per oz). Then began the fourth gold rush. By 1937, output had again surpassed 124.4 t (4 million oz). This was due to an increase in primary production and new byproduct production from base metal operations. Unlike the previous period of growth, however, this period was short-lived. The imposition of Executive Order L-208 in 1942 once again forced the shutdown of most mines. There are a great number of asbestos deposits in the USSR, and some are quite large. The main deposits of chrysotile asbestos are shown in Fig. 1. The Bazhenovo deposit, which is located in the Sverdlovsk region, is the largest and has been mined since 1889. Systematic studies of asbestos deposits were begun from the very be- ginning of Soviet government and are most often connected with the names K.E. Tarasov, P.M. Tatarinov, B.J. Merenkov, N.D. Sobolev, F.V. Syromjatnikov, V.N. Lodochnikov, V.P. Petrov, V.P. Eremeev, L.A. Sokolova, V.R. Artemov, and V.F. Dybkov. Investigations by these people and others helped the USSR be one of the most important producers of asbestos in the world. In this chapter, the main asbestos deposits of the USSR are explained in a general outline from the point of view of their genesis, common features, and differences that must be taken into account for forecasting, exploration, and the mining of asbestos. All chrysotile asbestos deposits of the USSR were formed from magnesium rock as a result of comparatively low grade temperature, hydrothermal alteration, and free crystallization of fibrous chrysotile in open cavities that served as catalysts. Chrysotile, a widely distributed rock-forming mineral, is not in general an important mineral for industry as it is a long fibrous and main vein variety. However, it must serve for geologists as an important prospecting criteria. And, the geologist should search for the mineral not only in places of possible chrysotile generation, but in places where asbestos may be crystallized in its long fibers. The Soviet geologists distinguish chrysotile asbestos deposits in two groups: (1) ultrabasic rocks and (2) sedimentary dolomite terranes, taking into account how the maternal rock was affected by hydrothermal solutions. The largest deposits are related to ultrabasite. In dolomite, the largest deposits are small and their asbestos contains almost no iron, which makes it a better filler for insulating plastics. There are a few types of asbestos deposits within the limits of the ultrabasic group, the largest being a Bazhenovo type to which the deposits of the Urals are attributed. This Bazhenovo asbestos is characterized by the most complete zonality of disposition for various kinds of asbestization. These types of deposits are, for the most part, the only ones presently working in the USSR. The Bazhenovo deposit is connected to the gabbro-peridotite intrusive belt that is about 180 km long and is broken into a number of fault blocks as shown in Fig. 2. Granitoid veins of intruded rocks are found along the deepest faults, and were sources of hydrothermal solutions that affected the maternal rock. The nearest granitoid vein, ultrabasite, is substituted by listwanite that consists of quartz, talc, carbonate, and some other essentially talcous rock. The next zone of hydrothermal alteration is composed of serpentine. The boundry between serpentinite and unaltered ultrabasite is as irregular, diffuse, and rough as the boundaries between all other zones. Nearer the vein of granitic rock, ultrabasite is entirely serpentinized into massif serpentinization that penetrates through cracks and fissures. There is an unaltered ultrabasite space between fissures, and the biggest block is preserved unaltered in the central part of the massif. The Soviet geologists call this ultrabasic sopka. Preservation of the unchanged blocks is of great importance for deposit formation as volume changes are impossible during the process of asbestization and serpentinization. It may be confidently said that asbestization in Bazhenovo type deposits is possible only when alteration of ultrabasite has not completely occurred. Under conditions of massif volume, a very big mass of substance must be carried out of the ultrabasite for the progressive stage of serpentinization. However, in the regressive stage,

In regard to the paper by J.B. Gwiazda, it makes a highly technical approach to show that the .u factor used by designers of lemniscate-guided roof supports has never really been confirmed as a maximum and assumes that convergence is vertical. Also, the paper does not appear to take into account deflection of structures, which occurs when the lemniscate and base members are fully loaded to their maximum stress level, nor the front to back line of the support in relation to differential roof to floor movements caused by strata movements under pressure. It is not unusual for differential movements to be slightly diagonal to the line of the support, particularly in faulted areas and on gradient faces. The paper also does not take into account consolidation of fines immediately above and below the support. Generally speaking, any differential movement is from face to waste and under these conditions the .u of 0.3, which appears to be an international standard, has worked in practice. However, if the face end of the support is lower than the waste end, then the µ of 0.3 can be considerably increased, giving rise to the damage mentioned in the paper. The ideal design should aim for a slightly forward bias in the lemniscate guide so that the last increment of setting is toward the face, tending to close any fissures that may have developed during the support advance cycle. The support should also be fitted with positive set valves to ensure that a high setting load density is attained to minimize bed separation. As far as powered supports are concerned, convergence is irresistible and all powered supports converge at their rated yield load. A similar principle can be applied to the differential roof to floor movements to drastically reduce the very high forces that would otherwise be applied to the lemniscate structures and pins and that, in turn, are transferred to the base arrangement and floor loading. Any differential movements are usually catered for by the 0.3 µ factor or deflection of structures in the lemniscate guide arrangement and consolidation of the floor. The floor loading, due to differential movement, is in addition to the support convergence load and requires additional bearing area to avoid possible floor penetration. Some seven years ago, Fletcher Sutcliffe Wild Ltd. (FSW) introduced a lemniscate-guided shield support where the lemniscate linkage is connected to the roof bar through two horizontally converging rams to allow differential movement to take place above a given rated figure. This is a known force and can be guarded against, whereas with rigid connections the forces, as yet, are unconfirmed. By careful design, a horizontal force in excess of 6 MN (60 tons) opposes differential movements for a total ram loading of only 2.5 MN (25 tons), or 1.25 MN (12% tons) each. This principle can considerably reduce the length and weight of the support in comparison with a rigid pin-type structure; also, the yield load rating can be increased without affecting the lemniscate forces. The graph shows the tensile and compressive forces in a lemniscate linkage of a support with and without hydrostore. These forces react into both the roof beam and base members and, as can be seen from the support height to linkage load graph, a considerable reduction in these reactions is gained by the use of the FSW patented hydrostore system. Floor loading is considerably reduced under maximum µ conditions, and by allowing the roof bar to move with the strata, some degree of improvement to strata control is achieved in line with the assumptions in the paper. In practice, these movements have only been in the region of a few millimeters, which, in turn, reflects on the improvements to strata control by the addition of positive set valves.

INTRODUCTION Shrinkage stope mining can be employed in steeply dipping veins where both the wall and the vein material are sufficiently strong to stand with only minimal ground support. Shrinkage stope mining takes advantage of the swell in volume produced in breaking in-place ore. This expanded volume of ore is allowed to occupy part of the mined-out vein, and in so doing provides ground sup¬port and a working surface for the miners. Only enough of the ore is drawn after each stoping cut to allow work¬ing room. Not until the entire mining block has been broken is the full amount of broken ore drawn from the stope. DEVELOPMENT PRACTICES FOR SHRINKAGE STOPING The vein is developed into stoping blocks, each of which is 76 to 91 m (250 to 300 ft) in length and 61 m (200 ft) between levels. Level development, described later, is either on the vein or parallel to it with crosscuts periodically driven over to the vein. There are usually two exits from each stope. The first entry is a raise at one end driven either conventionally by raise climber, or by a raised borehole. Present practice is that this raise, put in from level to level, is either a 2.1- x 2.1-m (7- x 7-ft) Alimak raise or a 1.2- to 1.8-m (4- to 6-ft) diam borehole. Either raise system will require pro¬visions for an ore chute carried with the stope to the haulage level or the scram drift. At 9- to 12-m (30- to 40-ft) vertical intervals, dogholes are developed from the raise so that when stoping breaks back into these dogholes, timber or steel sets and necessary service facilities can be installed. The second entry to the stope may be either a similar raise at the stope endline, or more economically, a cribbed raise carried with the stope. As previously stated, development of the ore block is achieved by either drifting on the vein or by paralleling the vein with a footwall lateral and then crosscutting over to the vein at specified intervals. In the following discussion, three basic cases are illustrated in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. In Fig. 1, development is in the footwall by a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless lateral. A heading is also driven on the ore and taken either full width or driven a standard size and slabbed to the vein width. Approxi¬mately 9-m (30-ft) long crosscuts on 7.6-m (25-ft) cen¬ters are driven from the lateral to the vein. For ease in muck handling they are usually put in on a slant rather than at right angles. A single orepass, located off the lateral and in the center of one stope block, can serve not only that stope, but also one on either side, up to a tramming distance of not more than 137 m (450 ft). Raises are put at the stope endlines on 91-m (300-ft) centers. The back of the vein is shot down and just enough broken material is drawn off to permit access for men to work off the broken ore. Development in Fig. 2 progresses by driving a 3- x 3-m (10- x 10-ft) trackless heading on the footwall side of the vein. The ore block is delineated by raises on 91-m (300-ft) centers. Crosscuts are again driven on 7.6-m (25-ft) centers over to the vein. Approximately four rounds are then taken up to the vein and each round is successively belled out so that all the crosscuts (pockets, in this case) connect. The use of tritium in manufacturing and its subsequent loss to the local environment in Tucson, Arizona resulted in a great debate relative to the physiological effects of low level radiation. This paper reviews some of the facts of the release and attempts to quantify the degree of hazard encountered by the local community. Some of the difficulties in assessing the true degree of absorbed dose and the assumptions necessary for calculation purposes are presented.

L. Alan Weakly, member SME, is a senior staff engineer, Exxon Co. Weakly chaired a Mining Engineering committee formed to solicit materials for six planned "personal skills" articles, to be used in ME this year. What follows are Weakly's introductory comments to the series. Upon graduation from college several years ago, I thought that I was sufficiently prepared to embark in my chosen profession. A short time later I realized that several years of on-the-job training was going to be required before I could use my technical training effectively. It never occurred to me that, professionally, I was seriously lacking in any other skills. My spelling could use a little upgrading, but this was not a serious deficiency. I have been very fortunate to have had two employers that recognized that their engineering professionals did lack other skills and made every effort to give them training to correct these deficiencies. The skills I am referring to are those in administration and interpersonal relationships. Most mining engineers and geologists receive very little, if any, college training in these areas. In addition, many companies do not provide this training and many mining engineers and geologists are unaware of their deficiencies. It is for this reason the subject of personal skills development is being introduced in Mining Engineering. The mining engineer or geologist can pursue one of two basic career directions, managerial or technical. In today's technically sophisticated society and highly competitive business climate, both orientations require administrative and interpersonal skills. Most of us are technically qualified and we continue to upgrade our technical skills. But many studies indicate that we, as a group, are significantly weaker in administrative and interpersonal skills than other professional groups. In addition, these studies indicate that engineers, in general, take longer to reach managerial levels and fewer do so. This series in Mining Engineering, then, should help readers strengthen and broaden their professional capabilities. In all industries, including mining and petroleum, economic analysis of potential investment projects is done to select the projects that will give maximum future value from the investment of available capital. Rather than looking directly at the future values to be generated by investing capital in alternate ways for economic decisions, evaluators usually use either rate of return, present value, annual value, a profit to investment ratio, or various break even analysis results to reach economic analysis decisions in evaluating alternative investments. Alternative economic evaluation techniques are used in industry to properly analyze the economic potential of various investment projects. "Discounted Cash Flow" analysis is the phrase commonly used to describe these techniques. Whether you want to analyze projects in mineral, petroleum, real estate, refining, pipe-line transportation, or any other industry, proper application of discounted cash flow analysis techniques enables you to fairly compare the economic potential of alternative projects as well or better than you can using any other project evaluation approaches. It should be pointed out that investment analysis generally involves more than economic analysis. Financial and intangible considerations sometimes are as important or more important to investment decision-making than economic considerations. Economic analysis refers to evaluation of the profit generating potential of projects, that is selecting which alternative projects will generate maximum future value possible from available investment capital. Financial analysis, on the other hand, relates to analysis of where money is going to come from to finance various projects. Regardless of the economic potential of a project, if financial analysis indicates that we cannot finance the project, it likely will be shelved for financial reasons even though it may be economically satisfactory. Many evaluators use the terms "economic analysis" and "financial analysis" interchangeably, but this author considers that to be undesirable. Fire detection capability in conveyor belt entries of coal mines has advanced considerably since the passage of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act. The advances in instrument technology and computer based monitoring have provided better fire detection than ever introduced in the industry. This paper discusses recent belt conveyor fires and detections in mines utilizing CO Monitoring Systems. Data from investigative reports is presented on belt entry fires from 1991 to the present.

After Abe Lee discovered gold (in April 1860) near the site of present-day Leadville, Colorado, he and is group staked nearly all of California Gulch with "speculative claims." They did so in an effort to grab any property that might be potentially profitable. But the plan did not work. New prospectors demanded a miners' meeting, from which arose the official "Bylaws of California Mining District, California Gulch, Arkansas River." These bylaws, adopted on May 12, 1860, established provisions as to the number, size and type of claims that could be filed. Fair laws invited more newcomers. By mid-summer, 5,000 people with tents and wagons were scattered from one end of the gulch to the other.Among the earliest arrivals to the region that spring were Horace Austin Warner Tabor and his wife, Augusta. H.A.W. Tabor, who was to become a pillar in the development of Leadville, arrived at California Gulch during a food shortage. He sacrificed his oxen so that hungry miners could eat. By doing so, he immediately became the friend of many. Augusta established a little store where she sold her baked goods and provided meals. Like most of the men, Horace prospected the surrounding hills. He only did so, however, for a short time. California Gulch yielded more than $5 million in gold during the next five years. By 1866, however, the placer gold was gone and most of the miners had packed up and left. Charles J. Mullen and Cooper Smith, who were grubstaked by a Philadelphian named J. Marshall Paul, found a new, rich lode at the Printer Boy Mine in 1868. It was the first underground gold mine in the Leadville area and marked the transition from surface mining to underground hard rock mining. Its discovery created a new but modest flurry of activity. Heavy black sand covered the region and made gold mining difficult. In 1875 William Stevens and Alvinus Wood decided to have the sand assayed. They discovered that it contained 15 ounces per ton of silver and was rich in carbonate. Stevens and Wood kept their find a secret for nearly two years. When the word spread in late 1877, the silver boom was on. In 1878 prospectors, merchants and others trickled into town from all directions. Dr. David H. Dougan closed his office. in Alma, crossed Mosquito Pass and set up shop in Leadville. Nobody seemed to need a doctor, however, and Dougan sat in his office for 28 days without a customer. On the 29th day he received word that there had been a mining accident and he was needed immediately. -That was the begin¬ning of his illustrious career in Leadville. Dougan was a successful physician, became mayor in 1881 and was later president of the Carbonate National Bank. Leadville was a simple community of log structures in 1878. By June of the following year, however, it had blossomed considerably. According to Cass Carpenter, as of May 1,1879, Leadville had "...19 hotels, 41 lodging houses, 82 drinking saloons, 38 restaurants, 13 wholesale liquor houses, 10 lumber yards, 7 smelting and reduction works, 2 sampling works for testing ores, 12 blacksmith shops, 6 livery stables, 6 jewelry stores, 3 undertakers and 21 gambling houses where all sorts of games are played as openly as the Sunday School sermon is conducted." Additionally, there were 36 brothels. When George E. King and other architects arrived, Leadville took on an air of elegance and sophistication. In sharp contrast to some of the Victorian-style, gingerbread-laced homes in Leadville, its suburbs were comprised of many tenement shacks and plain cabins mixed with a few commercial buildings, many mines and smelters. Mines sprinkled the area east of Leadville like pepper from a pepper shaker. Wherever there was a cluster of mines, a camp usually sprang up. Most were very close together. South of Leadville the giant Arkansas Valley lead smelter sprawled out between Stringtown and Bucktown in an area known as Smelter Valley. Founded in 1879 as the Billing and Eilers Smelter, the Arkansas Valley plant was operated by the American Smelting and Refining Company. Several other smelters operated in the vicin¬ity. In April 1878, Horace Tabor grubstaked prospectors August Rische and George Hook. For $64 worth of supplies and tools, he was guaranteed a one-third interest in their findings. Rische and Hook discovered the Little Pittsburg (often spelled Pittsburgh) Mine and made Tabor an instant millionaire. Tabor once purchased a "salted" mine, the Chrysolite; but instead of considering it a bad deal, he further developed the property and struck rich silver ore. Later, Tabor purchased the Matchless Mine for $117,000, possibly the only investment he made without partners. During its peak years, the Matchless yielded $1 million worth

"Understanding mill charge motion is important. In the charge, the center of gravity is shifted from the rotational center of the mill system, and its motion is induced by rotation of the mill. At the same time, the charge creates a torque in the mill system. Breakage of ore particles and wear of liners/ball media are closely linked to this motion. To study these phenomena in a physically correct manner, numerical models for different parts of the mill system are needed. Validations of such models are scarce, because of the difficulty of measuring inside a tumbling mill. Experimental measurements in a lab mill were done for a number of load cases: varying feed material, mill filling, mill speed and pulp liquid. The mill is set up to measure the charge-induced torque. The accuracy is good, with relative uncertainty less than ± 2% for relevant load cases. A full three-dimensional numerical model of the whole mill is used to predict induced torque. Agreement between predicted and measured torque at steady-state is good. In addition, the model can accurately predict the mill startup behavior for torque and mill power. This proves that the model is physically correct, and can be used for modeling large-scale mills.IntroductionUnderstanding of the charge motion within the mill is of importance in mill optimization. The breakage of ore particles and the wear of liners/ball media are closely linked to the charge motion. To study these phenomena in a physically correct manner, appropriate numerical models for different parts of the mill system must be used. Validation of these models is of major importance. This has led to an increased interest in obtaining an accurate and direct measurement of mill load and the behavior of the mill charge.For structural analysis, the finite element method (FEM) is the most developed and most frequently used numerical method. FEM is a numerical solution method based on continuum mechanics modeling. A constitutive relation for the actual material is described, and the governing equations are solved in Zienkiewicz and Taylor (2000). Varieties of different constitutive models for a large number of materials are implemented in modern FEM code. The computability of nonlinear problems in solid mechanics is investigated in Belytschko and Mish (2001), among others."

"In recent years, there has been an increasing focus on the hydrometallurgical processing of molybdenite, with the decline of high-grade and easily handled molybdenum minerals. In this work, a novel method of selective extraction of complex molybdenite concentrate, which is characteristic of high-grade copper ore, has been investigated. The results show that the leaching of chalcopyrite was impacted by the pH of the electrolyte when sodium carbonate and ammonium acid carbonate were added to the electrolyte. The leaching rate of molybdenum reached 99.39%, but chalcopyrite could not be leached at all in 240 min under experimental conditions of liquid-to-solid ratio 25:1, concentration of NaCl 4 mol/L, pH=9, room temperature and agitation speed 400 rpm. The grade of copper in the residue was 21.84%, with a recovery 99.93%. The technology of selective electro-oxidation leaching of molybdenum and recovery of copper from complex molybdenite concentrate is an effective separation method. The diffusion control model can be used to describe the process of leaching of molybdenum. The activation energy of the leaching reaction was found to be approximately 9.21 kJ/mol.IntroductionWorldwide, high-grade and easy-to-handle ore is decreasing, while the proportion of low-grade and complex ore is increasing. Porphyry copper ores with associated low-grade molybdenite are very abundant in China. Molybdenum is a valuable byproduct in the processing of porphyry copper deposits where the molybdenum is present in low quantities in the form of molybdenite (MoS2). In the conventional processing of copper sulfide ores by froth flotation, most of the molybdenite in the ore floats along with the copper sulfides. In this way, a bulk copper-molybdenum concentrate is produced. Afterward, the bulk coppermolybdenum concentrate is treated by differential flotation to obtain a rougher molybdenum concentrate, which requires several successive cleaning steps to produce a final molybdenum concentrate. However, it is widely recognized that flotation alone cannot economically produce a high-grade molybdenite concentrate, i.e., with less than 0.5% Cu. Therefore, in most cases, it is necessary to use a final step of chemical purification of the molybdenite concentrate to reduce the copper content to a level suitable for the market (Antonijevic and Pacovic,1992; Gerhardt et al., 2001; Fu and Zhong, 2003; Reza et al., 2006, Rafael et al., 2013)."

The weathering of coal mine waste rock releases iron, calcium, sulfate and associated trace elements like selenium [Se], which are introduced to seepage waters. Nitrogen species, such as nitrate and ammonia, are also found in association with coal-mining drainages mainly due to leaching of residual blasting compounds. Elevated concentrations of Se are a ubiquitous occurrence in coal mining environments in British Columbia, with values ranging from below 50 to over 500 µg/L in site waters. Selenate is the most common form of selenium found in waste rock seepages, and is exceedingly mobile in aerobic freshwaters. A major concern with waterborne Se in British Columbia is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains. Treatment to remove Se from coal-mining wastewaters has proven to be challenging for conventional water treatment technologies. Compounding this challenge, many streams are characterized by high flows and low selenium concentrations. Conventional membrane and ion exchange treatments produce concentrated brine streams that are difficult to treat or require disposal. Conventional biotreatment systems use excess nutrients to provide the required electrons to compensate for inefficient and variable electron availability, as well as to adjust reactor chemistry. The Electro-Biochemical Reactor (EBR) technology provides electrons to the microbes directly at a low voltage potential (1-3 V), supplying a controllable and consistent supply of useable electrons to the system and microbes at low current. In this manner, the EBR technology overcomes the shortcomings found in conventional systems, as it reduces the required nutrient addition and provides a more controllable, efficient, economical, and robust biotreatment system than found in past generations of biological treatment systems. Additionally, the EBR process does not produce excess solids or biomass; therefore, solids management post-treatment is not required. Laboratory EBR bench-scale and on-site pilot-scale systems were used to treat five British Columbia coal mine wastewaters; influent Se concentrations ranged from 35 µg/L to 531 µg/L. Se treatment targets for the tested waters ranged from 5 to 10 µg/L. Mean Se concentrations in EBR effluents ranged from 0.5 µg/L to 1.4 µg/L, while reducing sulfate concentrations. The test data demonstrate that the EBR technology is an effective Se removal option for British Columbia?s coal-mining wastewaters.

Sometimes in assessing where we are and where we are going it is informative to take a look at where we have been. Whether or not it adds to our understanding of the present, I think it may be interesting to review some of the past history of our industry. As a starting point I chose to use the famous Paley Commission Report, formally known as "The U. S. President's materials Policy Commission -Resources for Freedom."(l) The Paley Commission report said "Fluorspar is an essential raw material for the steel, aluminum, and chemical industries." Of course this statement is still true. It also said, "United States known reserves of fluorspar would be sufficient for some 15 years at present rates of consumption--about 426 000 short tons in 1960. Projected consumption for 1975, however, is several times as great, and reserves in other free countries do not appear adequate to supply United States deficiencies during the next 25 years." This simply demonstrates how even the most learned and competent people can observe all the facts avail-able to them at a given time and yet be unable to predict the future very accurately. We all know that reserves in other countries are more than adequate to supply the United States today, 25 years since the report was published. In fact, the report estimated free-world reserves at something over 36 million tonnes (40 million short tons). Contrast this with 246 million tonnes (271 million short tons) estimated as total world reserves from the section on fluorspar from Commodity Data Summaries of 1974, published by the Department of the Interior. (2) The Paley Report discusses other matters pertaining to fluorspar that are still of interest, such as improving mining methods. Furthermore, it certainly did a good forecasting job in noting that greater recycling should become possible in the aluminum industry in regard to fluorine lost in wastes and also concerning the substitution of fluorspar in the steel industry by other fluxing materials. It also suggested that non-fluorine containing propellants should be investigated as a replacement of those containing fluorine as a conservation matter. Some discussion was devoted to recovering the fluorine content of phosphate rock, which is being practiced today, but was in its infancy in 1950.

As the 2009 president of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Inc., I am pleased to present the 2009 issue of Transactions of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy, and Exploration, Vol. 326. A significant portion of the contribution that we as a society make is the publication of professional and technical papers that contribute to the advancement of scientific knowledge and information transfer. Communication within the mining community is the key to a successful society. Through the information-transfer mechanisms of books, magazines, meetings and electronic media, the technology exchange that is fundamental to the existence of the Society is accomplished. This technology exchange continues a tradition that dates back to the 1871 meeting of 22 mining engineers in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, that resulted in the founding of AIME; those individuals envisioned that these transaction volumes “would form a most valuable and greatly needed addition to our professional literature.” This volume certainly satisfies that intent. In keeping with SME’s tradition of promoting technological developments while honoring the past, the 2009 Transactions represents an important milestone. It is the last Transactions to appear as a bound volume. Future volumes will appear as e-books only, with some of the Transactions-only papers appearing online prior to the ebook (exactly what form the new Transactions will take is still in development). The decision to go to an all-digital format for this longstanding publication was a difficult one, but one which we hope will better serve the mining community, especially our international members. This 2009 Transactions of SME, Vol. 326, contains a total of 73 technical papers (510 pages), including all 23 papers (136 pages) that were published in 2009 in the Technical Papers Section of Mining Engineering magazine (Vol. 61) and all 32 papers (232 pages) that were published in 2009 in Minerals & Metallurgical Processing (Vol. 26). In addition, this volume contains 18 papers (142 pages) that are being published for the first time in this issue. The papers presented in this volume were written by some of the most distinguished professionals in the industry worldwide. All 73 technical papers were peer-reviewed and approved. The process of review and publication requires much hard work by authors, reviewers and publications staff. As the 2009 president of SME and on behalf of our members, I would like to extend our gratitude to all whose efforts contributed to the publication of this volume.
