INTRODUCTION Radioactive deposits were observed in 1972 in some of the Upper Silesian coal mines. They were located mainly in the drains in galeries and on the inside surfaces of water pipes. They also caused some problems by accumulating in water pumps. It has been postulated that the deposits are produced by natural radioactive waters seeping from the rocks. Investigations were initiated to answer the following questions: - What is the composition and the amount of radioactivity in the deposits? - What radioisotopes are present in the water? - How are the radioactive deposits formed? - Do the radioactive waters also occur in other mines? - How does the radioactivity of the water depend on chemical composition? - What is the origin of the radioactive water? - Does the water and the deposits cause radiation hazards for miners? -How can the radiation hazard be reduced? METHODS OF MEASUREMENT Determination of Radium Isotopes in Water The commonly used methods of radium determination in water are either based on measurements of the radioactivity of 222Rn which is in equilibrium with 226Ra, or on the detection of alpha particles of the radium radioisotopes after chemical separation of radium from the water sample. The method based on radon activity measurements is very sensitive and does not require any chemical Separation, but it can be used for determination of 226Ra from the uranium series only, because the thorium daughter 220Rn has too short a half-life (55s to yield the required accuracy. The method developed by Goldin, 1961 [2] involved alpha-particle measurements in thin layers of RaS04 and BaS04 separated from the water. This method is not convenient for saline water and water with high barium concentration because the amount of barium carrier in this case is too large to obtain a thin layer of precipitate with sufficient activity. The Upper Silesian carboniferous waters are often saline with high barium content, so the method described by Goldin was not convenient for this case and it was necessary to change the detection system and modify the chemical preparation. The procedure developed by the authors for the determination of radium isotopes in water was as follows: - Depending on the Ba2+ content and the required sensitivity of measurement, a water sample of 200 cm3 to 3 dm3 was taken. - 10 cm3 of 0.25 M citric acid and 5 cm3 15M ammonia was added to form complex Ba2+ ions and avoid the immediate precipitation of BaSO4. (This was repeated as long as the addition of BaC12 did not form a precipitate.) - 1 cm3 of 1N solution of Pb(N03)2 as a carrier for radioactive isotopes of lead and 10 cm3 of 0.1 N BaC12 as a carrier for radium were added. - The sample was heated to the boiling point and the precipitation of RaS04, BaSO4 and PbS04 with 50% H2SO4 was carried out. - After several hours the sample was centrifuged and the precipitate was purified by washing with nitric acid and distilled water. - The precipitate was then redisolved in 20 cm3 0.125 M Na2EDTA and 3 cm3 6M ammonia and reprecipitated from the solution by dropwise addition of acetic acid to d pH of 4.5. At this value of pH, precipitation occurs only for the barium and radium sulfates, while lead and all other radioactive elements remain in the solution. The date and time of deposit precipitation was recorded. - The final barium-radium sulfate mixture was washed with distilled water and transferred to standard measurement vials. - Each vial containing a deposit had 6 cm3 of distilled water added and was then shaken vigorously. 12 cm3 of liquid gelling scintillator (INSTA-GEL UNISOLV-1 type) was then added and the vi 1 was shaken again. After a while the scintillator turns into a milky gel in which the deposit is uniformly distributed. - The standard sample of 226Ra was prepared in the same way. - The activity of the samples was measured using a liquid scintillation spectrometer. (In this case the TRICARB 3320 produced by Packard Instruments, was used). Tests run on standard radium solutions provided by Amersham Radiochemical Centre indicated that this method of measurement enables one to achieve an efficiency of almost 100% (within measurement error). For alpha particles no quenching effect was observed for the BaS04 concentration in the range up to 80 mg of BaS04 per 1 cm3 of liquid scintillator coctail (Fig. 1). In December 1988 Phelps dodge corporation brought an underground gold mine into production in the republic of Botswana. The mineralization is associated with steeply dipping shear zones in Archean greenstones of the Tati Schist Belt. The gold is intimately associated with sulfides and is refractory in nature. The deposit is being exploited by underhand open stoping methods. Vertical and inclined shafts are used to hoist the ore to surface where it is treated by conventional crushing, milling and flotation, followed by fluid bed roasting with CIP elution and carbon regeneration. Adjacent deposits are being explored with a view to increasing production. Legal and taxation aspects of operating in Botswana are discussed.

An improved mine environment is the single most critical factor affecting the health and safety of workers engaged in underground coal winning. A very important subclassification of this wide field is mine ventilation, which essentially deals with 'mine atmospheric environmental control.' To ensure proper mine atmospheric environmental control, adequate quantities of air must flow through working sections in the mine. In recent years much attention has been paid to the fan and its prime movers, but the efficient use of the fan output in the workings has not received an equal amount of investigation. In mechanically ventilated mines friction losses in main airways often account for 70 to 90 percent of the total pressure loss sustained in the system. Also the leakage losses are a serious detriment to the efficiency of mine ventilation systems. It is not uncommon to loose 60 to 70 percent of the air between the fan and the last open cross-cuts due to leakage directly into the return Proper assessment of these losses in simulating and projecting complex ventilation systems is vital. Network analysis of ventilation systems is not new. Scott and Hinsly (1951) presented the detailed mathematical framework. Since then work has been done in adopting this technique to analog, and within the past few years, to digital computers. Development of computer programs to solve ventilation network problems has been reported in United Kingdom, Japan, U.S.S.R., South Africa, Germany, and the United States. The purpose of these programs is to serve as an experimental mine wherein analysis of proposed alternatives or ventilation planning can be tested. The great power of the computer as a planning tool lies in the ability to input empirical or Projected data into programs with predicting ability. But, however good a computer program is, unless fairly accurate input information is available accurately assessing the engineering factors of the ventilation system, the output will be suspect. Thus, to simulate and project mine ventilation systems, good estimates of leakage and friction factors are important. Yet, relatively little work has been done in the past three decades to determine these more realistically.

A coal mine study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed-air, foam spray system installed under a continuous miner boom and directed to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The study's objectives were to evaluate the foam, underboom sprays' effect on: • the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, and • the quartz concentration in the airborne, respirable dust. The foam generation and delivery system's engineering design is described in the paper, followed by descriptions of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the foam's effects on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the continuous miner cab, the face return and the intake. The data indicate reductions in the dust's quartz content, ranging from 19.7% to 64.6%, in eight of 11 comparisons of the foam vs. no foam cuts. In addition, airborne intake dust reductions were observed in eight of 11 comparisons.

Conventional triboelectrification based dry coal beneficiation methods require ground coal as a prerequisite feed material, energy intensive static-in-line mixer or cyclonic tribocharger configuration, and transport and/or improvement in the design of free-fall separators to improve the separation efficiency of [me pyrite/mineral matter from coal. The proposed paper illustrates the two concepts. First, the use of ceramic media in a polyurethane lined attitor in achieving simultaneous grinding and differential charging. Second, the use of an electrocentrifuge to selectively separate coal from mineral matter present in the triboelectrified mixture. It is of interest to note that some ceramic media can satisfy the requirements of both desired density and work function to achieve grinding and differential charging.

"At a distance of 10 years from the first application of the Nazzano Method, the widening under traffic of a tube of an existing motorway tunnel was realized near Ancona, along the A14 Motorway in Italy. This paper describes the works for the enlargement with conventional method of the second tube, very close to that already widened under traffic.This enlargement was realized very fast, taking into account the advantages of some interesting technological improvements of the Final Design proved in the first tube.INTRODUCTION TO THE WIDENING OF EXISTING MOTORWAY TUNNELSThe widening of a twin-bore motorway tunnel usually considers the double option of creating a third bore as an alternative or closure to traffic of one of the two bores with the resulting reduction in the level of service for users.On the contrary, the extension in situ of a road, motorway, railway or underground tunnel in the presence of traffic, made possible by an inspired idea of Prof. Pietro Lunardi, enables the level of service of the infrastructure to be maintained without the need to resort to alternative routes to create new permanent or temporary bores, not always feasible because of the lack of the necessary space.This construction technique, known as the ‘Nazzano Method’, is part of the technologies refined and offered by the ADECO-RS approach to tunnel design and construction (Lunardi P., 2008) which is increasingly used in the world, leading to the industrialisation of tunnelling (meaning respect for the times and costs set out during detailed design) both in conventional and mechanised (through TBM) excavations.The first true experimentation of the ‘Nazzano Method’ was carried out between 2004 and 2007 to enlarge the two-bore ‘Nazzano’ tunnel (Italy, Milan-Rome A1 motorway) in the presence of traffic, widening it to house from two to four lanes in each direction (Lunardi P. et al., 2007). Following the success achieved in this first application, the Nazzano Method was strengthened considering all the possible suggestions arising from the previous experience and then taken up to enlarge the north bore of the ‘Montedomini’ two-bore tunnel (Italy, Bologna-Taranto A14 motorway), in situ and the presence of traffic."

"Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been regulated by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration since 2002 in underground metal and nonmetal mines. To demonstrate regulatory compliance, DPM samples must be collected and later analyzed by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) 5040 standard method, but the FLIR Airtec DPM monitor can serve as a complementary engineering tool. The monitor is a handheld instrument that offers near-real-time measurements of elemental carbon (EC), which is a primary constituent of DPM. As part of an ongoing field study, the monitor was used to survey EC in an underground stone mine. This effort was aimed at determining spatial and temporal DPM variations in several key locations. The results of prolonged area monitoring—that is, lasting several hours — revealed that DPM concentrations were diluted substantially as air moved away from the primary production zone, but that concentrations could vary quite a bit in a single location from day to day and between seasons. DPM concentrations were generally lower in winter than in summer, which is consistent with increased natural ventilation airflows during winter. Using a modified sampling cassette, an attempt was also made to sensitize the Airtec monitor to allow for “spot-checking” of EC concentrations — that is, measurements made in several minutes. Preliminary field data showed that the sensitive cassette performed well in terms of providing accurate data that could be useful for rapid assessment of DPM. IntroductionDiesel particulate matter (DPM) is the solid fraction of the exhaust emissions from a diesel engine. It largely consists of elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) (Birch, 2003). The World Health Organization International Agency for Research on Cancer classified diesel exhaust, including DPM, as a carcinogen (World Health Organization, 2012). It is believed to cause and/or exacerbate respiratory illness upon inhalation, deposition and retention in lung tissue. Because DPM exists in both the micro- and nanoparticulate ranges, it can bypass typical autoimmune defense mechanisms that keep larger particles out of the respiratory system (Ristovski et al., 2012)."

Heat transfer in partially wet mine airways has been the subject of study for quite some time. Of the available models some are quite empirical while some involve highly complicated computation. Models developed by Amano, Mizuta and Hiramatsu and Banerjee and Chernyak as well as that modified by Misra were evaluated for prediction of the rise in temperature and humidity (mixing ratio ) of partially wet mine airways at four different levels in the Mosaboni Mine of Hindustan Copper Ltd. Measurements of barometric pressure, virgin-rock temperature and changes in dry- and wet-bulb temperatures along a certain length of airway were made. The rise in dry-bulb temperature and mixing ratio of air over the sections were calculated using the three models. The study reveals that calculated values of temperature and moisture content agree within possible rage of experimental error with all the three models in case of three levels with low wetness factor, but the agreement was poor for the relatively more wet airway on the 30th level. Errors in the estimation of fw to the tune of 0.025 can lead to fair error up to 0.94 K in the estimated temperature while alternative ways of estimating the heat transfer coefficient [] can introduce errors up to 1.45 K.

Many concerns have been expressed worldwide regarding the use of diesel equipment in underground mines due to the potential health risks associated with diesel particulate matter (DPM). In assessing the risk to the health of miners and designing control strategies for DPM, it is important to know the concentration of DPM in the working areas of a mine. In some mines, significant stratification occurs due to the characteristics of the diesel exhaust, affecting exposure and the ability to measure DPM concentrations accurately. This study outlines some of the concentration profile data obtained during sampling at three mines where diesels were employed. Mine #1 (a gold mine) employed large openings in which a diesel-powered roof bolter was used. Mines #2 and #3 are both room-and-pillar operations with varying conditions. Mine #2 is an experimental mine where two stationary diesels were utilized for sampling purposes, while Mine #3 is a traditional evaporite operation using two mobile diesel vehicles for section haulage. These field studies indicated that some level of stratification occurred in all the mines, but the stratification was not as pronounced in the case of Mine #2 due to the complex pattern of exhaust emissions generated by the vehicles. The stratification seemed to depend on the distance from the vehicle, the mine air velocity, whether the vehicles were moving or stationary, and whether the exhaust was diluted by equipment design features. The concentration of DPM was generally higher at samplers located near the roof and lower at samplers located near the floor. However, this was not found in all cases. This paper provides conclusions on how knowledge of stratification patterns can be utilized in sampling and control of DPM in mine atmospheres.

The distributions of gold and associated elements in mineral grains from a pyritic gold ore were studied by optical microscopy, and by SEM and SIMS imagery. Products studied were a sulfide flotation concentrate, a calcined sulfide concentrate, a cyanide leached calcine, and a cyanide leached pressure oxidation residue. Individual pyrite grains are compositionally zoned and solid solution gold occurs in some, but not all zones. Most of the gold in calcined products is present as metallic coalesced grains that are smaller than 100 angstroms. Gold lost into cyanide leached residues from the calcines tends to be in “semi-dense” grains that cannot be distinguished from gold-free grains except by SIMS analysis. The gold in cyanide leached pressure oxidation residues occurs as solid solution gold in unoxidized pyrite remnants.

An atomic force microscopy (AFM) has been applied to study the adsorption of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) and potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) on arsenopyrite surface in solutions. AFM images show that the collectors adsorb on arsenopyrite surface in patches at pH 6. Increasing the chemical dosage will increase the adsorption density of the patches on mineral surface. The increased probe-arsenopyrite adhesion measured in PAX solutions at pH 6 is attributed to the adsorption of the patches, suggesting the hydrophobic nature of the patches, which is likely the oily dixanthogen. It is also found that arsenopyrite is reactive in water in the presence of air. At a high pH with the addition of Ca(OH)2 the adsorption of collectors on arsenopyrite is greatly retarded or depressed because the mineral surface is coated by a lot of precipitates, which is hydrophilic in nature as shown by the measured strong repulsive probe-arsenopyrite detachment force. The findings confirm that the flotation behavior of arsenopyrite in xanthate solutions is very similar to that of pyrite.

The Blue Mountain Tunnel is a part of the Sultan River Hydroelectric Project. The Sultan Project is in the Cascade Mountain Range, approximately 56 km (35 mi) northeast of Seattle, Washington. The geology is structurally complex, consisting of graywacke and argillite, with lesser amounts of metaigneous rocks. The tunnel, excavated with a tunnel boring machine (TBM), is 4.32 m (14 it) in diameter and 6.3 km (3.9 mi) long. The average 24 hour advance was 41 m (134 it) with a maximum of 71 m (234 it). The tunnel is essentially unlined except for 383 m (1,257 it) in a low cover area and in the rocktrap. Inspection of the tunnel after one year of operation showed it to be in good condition with only a minor amount of rock debris in the rocktrap.

"The objective of this research is to study the quality of blast-furnace iron ore pellets with binary basicity 1 fired on a pilot scale using the two main firing processes that are presently in use in the world and comparing them. Currently, the great majority of pellet producers use the traveling grate process because of its higher production capacity. In this study, the physical and chemical qualities of the pellet feed, limestone, anthracite and bentonite were determined and the amount of additives for a blast furnace pellet with the defined basicity was calculated. The physical properties of the green and dried pellets were determined accordingly. Produced pellets, after being fired on a pilot scale using traveling grate and grate kiln, were subjected to chemical analysis and physical testing. No significant difference was observed in the metallurgical quality — that is, reducibility index (RI), reducing disintegration index (RDI) and swelling index (SWI) — of the pellets produced by both processes. However, a comparison of cold physical tests — tumble and cold compression strength — shows improved quality of the pellets fired using the grate kiln process.IntroductionThe development of human civilization owes much to iron and steel (Sun et al., 2015). Iron is the most used metal in the world, and it is the main component of steel, which is present in materials for structural engineering, automotive and general industrial applications (Liu et al., 2014). Increased global demand has led to a decrease in the resources of ore with high iron content (Zhang et al., 2015), and currently 95 percent of the iron ore in China needs processing before smelting as its iron (Fe) content is only about 30 percent on average (Liu et al., 2014).Pelletizing is a process to economically agglomerate iron ore pellet feed into pellet form. After balling, green pellets are conveyed to the final step of the manufacturing process (Pena, 1982). The process is a multifaceted one, involving high temperatures, air flow gas turbulence and complex equipment geometry (Larsson et al., 2009). The pellets are fed into blast furnaces, which are now predominantly used in the extraction of iron. Ore processing also requires physical separation, including crushing, grinding and water removal (Sun et al., 2015).The increase in steel consumption favors the exploitation of low-concentration ores and the production of pellets (Halt and Kawatra, 2014). Pellet quality is affected by various factors, such as their physical and chemical characteristics and their temperatures and residence times in the furnace (Halt, Silva and Kawatra, 2015). Different geological settings lead to a wide range of different minerals (Graça et al., 2015).This work aims to generate important information for the pellet industry in the area of physical and metallurgical qualities of the agglomerates obtained by two processes: traveling grate and grate kiln."

Three pits at the Getchell Mine contained water during a hiatus in mining activity (1968-1983). For this period, expected concentrations of As, C1, SO4 and TDS resulting solely 16om evaporative concentration were computed. Computed values are 1.6 to 2.3 times greater than those measured in local groundwaters. However, computed values fix As, SO4 and TDS are lower than measured values in the pit lakes. In some cases, the computed values are only 8% of the measured pit lake values, indicating a major control on water quality via water-rock interactions. In contrast, computed C1 values exceed measured pit lake concentrations.

INTRODUCTUCTICN The coal seams at Bobov dol basin are highly prone to spontaneous combustion in Bulgaria. The risks of endogenous fires (SPONCOM) exist mainly in gob area. During the last 15 years three different technologies for preventing and fighting SPONCOM have been applied in underground mines of this basin: pulp from hard material and water, foam and inerting with nitrogen. On the basis of experimental application of these technologies as well as theoretical and experimental research a new technology - Foam Pulp Technology (FPT) was worked out. It is very effective in difficult to reach places in a gob. BACKGROUND AND THE NEED OF FPT Application of the three methods mentioned above showed advantages as well as some disadvantages, allowing determination of their effective application scope depending on geological and working conditions. Their advantages can be summarized as follows: - Foaming: high viscosity at low density, which allows forming a thick layer; good surfactant wetting properties; excellent effective cooling during evaporation in high temperature zones. - Pulping with mixture of solid particles (e.g., fly ash) and water from surface installation: easy to apply in a mine; low operational and energy costs due to gravity transport from the surface to the gob: good ecological results because the waste material is returned back underground. - Inerting with nitrogen: volumetric action which doesn't restrict the thickness of treated coal pile; easy to apply in a mine; controllable nitrogen delivery depending on fire hazard conditions. Main disadvantages of the same three methods are: - Foaming: rapid disintegration due to intrusion into heterogeneous and porous media and high costs due to the need of frequent large volume foam flows (short foam's life); - Pulping: inapplicable for coal piles with high thickness which is of great importance in the cases of seams with ununiform hypsometry (rapid and frequent changes in a seam configuration) and/or great volumes of coal or ore piles particularly heated to a high temperature; strong dependence on gob floor declination; water draining of the working face area which impedes the movement of supports and chain conveyor's. - Inerting: relatively high costs hardly depending on the rate of face advance (fig.1) in comparison with the other methods; it is difficult to ensure sufficient oxygen at the exit end of the face. This problem is crucial in faces with a high level of methane emissions; accelerating of the oxidation and spontaneous heating of the pile after turning off the nitrogen supply. The control of quartz levels in the respirable dust requires an approach different from that used to control respirable coal dust. The unique physical properties of quartz have to be utilized when developing quartz dust control systems. Also, techniques that modify the surface properties of quartz dust so that conventional dust control measures are effective should be explored. For instance, the wetting characteristics of quartz can be modified so that the capture efficiency of the quartz dust can be improved. Foam sprays assist in modifying surface wetting characteristics. This paper summarizes the results of a study that was conducted in an operating mine to evaluate the effectiveness of a compressed air foam spray system installed under the boom of a continuous miner and directed so as to cover the pan and the gathering arm. The objectives of the study were to evaluate the effect of the foam underboom sprays on (1) the respirable dust concentration in the ambient air, (2) the quartz concentration in the respirable dust. The engineering design of the foam generation and delivery system is described in the paper, followed by a description of the mine and the dust sampling strategy. The data were analyzed to study the effect of foam on respirable dust and quartz concentrations at the miner cab, face return and the intake. The results of the data analyses and costs are presented in the paper.

Over the past 20 years, diesel-powered equipment has been introduced into the underground mining environment in increasing numbers. While the introduction began years earlier in the metal-nonmetal sector, the exponential growth in coal mining use during this time has been more pronounced. Reasons for the continued use and rapid growth of diesel equipment in underground mines are easily understood. The safety and operational advantages afforded by this equipment in production and support systems are demonstrable. As other mine operators witness the advantages enjoyed by their competitors, they too move to introduce an increasingly diverse array of such equipment into their underground mines. As with any industrial technology, the use of diesel-powered equipment entails potential safety and health concerns. Existing Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA)approval regulations (30 CFR Parts 31, 32 and 36) apply only to diesel locomotives and mobile diesel-powered equipment for noncoal mines. In the absence of specific regulations, MSHA has required the use of equipment approved under Part 36 (gassy noncoal mines) for areas of underground coal mines where permissible electrical equipment is required. However, a considerable amount of diesel-powered equipment without explosion-proof or fire prevention features is in use in areas of coal mines where permissible electrical equipment is not required. It is on the use of this latter class of equipment that MSHA is focusing much of its regulatory attention relative to coal. The agency also is focused on revising existing occupational exposure limits for gaseous emissions and instituting limits on diesel particulate emissions for both coal and metal-nonmetal mines.

The dissolution behavior of gold and silver from Au/Ag alloys in aerated cyanide solutions has been investigated using rotating disc electrodes. The variables studied included concentration of cyanide, oxygen partial pressure and rotating speed of the disc. The dissolution potential and the rate of dissolution were obtained in view of the anodic and cathodic current-potential relationships. The results were discussed in terms of a mixed potential theory. The results showed that the dissolution rate of gold and silver from the alloys was partially controlled by chemical reaction, but largely by transport of either oxygen or cyanide, depending on their relative concentration under the experimental conditions employed in this study.

The changes in the elemental contents and the structural properties of chalcopyrite concentrate when roasted were studied, and the main reactions contributing to the leaching process revisited. Firstly, TG/DTA measurements were performed to identify the roasting temperatures that influenced the type of species reacting with sulphuric acid leaching liquor. The temperatures of main reactions, whose output may affect the subsequent leaching process, were analysed for the concentrate at hand, and concluded to be generally lower than those reported in literature. Secondly, the obtained results were confirmed by images and XRD measurements on the roasted concentrate at temperatures in between 350 and 600 °C with increments of 50 °C. Finally, the leaching behaviour of the roasted specimens in a stirred sulphuric acid solution examined and the Cu/ Fe selectivity investigated that the maximum Cu/Fe ratio in the pregnant solution would nearly be achieved for the roasting temperatures lower than 500 °C, since the oxidation temperature of iron sulphate is found lower than that of copper sulphate.
