The Southern Powder River Basin (SPRB) now commands 30% of the US utility, coal market due to the region's low mine production costs, competitive rail rates and low sulfur content. In 1997, production exceeded 240 Mt (265 million st). This was an in¬crease of 104 Mt (115 million st) since 1989 and 4.5 Mt (5 million st) above 1996. Continued growth is expected as the second phase of the Clean Air Act Amendments (CAAA) approaches. This growth will be the greatest in the southern part of the Basin where coal quality is higher. Coal characteristics SPRB coal is classified as subbituminous due to its low heating value and high moisture content. The coal is characterized by low sulfur and ash contents, low ash fusion temperatures and high reactivities. In 1997, the average heating content was 8,593 Btu/lb, with an average sulfur and ash content of 0.79 lbs S02/million [ ] Btu and 5.13%, respectively. The distinguishing characteristic of SPRB coal is its low sulfur content. Most SPRB coal contains less than 1.2 lbs S02/million Btu. This is the approximate definition of "compliance" coal for Phase II of the CA AA. Much of the coal, particularly in the southern part of the Basin, is referred to as "super-compliance" coal due to SO2 contents of between 0.4 and 0.7 lbs SO2/million Btu. "Re-occurring face ignitions in U.S. coal mines are concerning and require a closer look at air quality monitoring systems and practices employed in these mines. The explosion disaster at the Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia in 2010 caused 29 fatal injuries and was largely caused by inadequate water sprays and inadequate ventilation monitoring. In this comparison, the author compares ventilation system monitoring in Australian, German and U.S. underground coal mines and makes recommendations for improvements and best practices. Mines in Germany and Australia are adhering to more stringent requirements for monitoring air quality and quantity and for monitoring water spray systems on cutters to prevent frictional ignitions. Air quality should to be monitored for sufficient oxygen, toxic gases, explosibility and for fire gases indicating a potential fire. Ventilation monitors must also confirm that sufficient quantities of air are available. Fully automated, continuously recording atmospheric monitoring and alarm systems are established practices in Germany and Australia and should be mandated for U.S. mines as well, in addition to the current, regular spot inspections of the ventilation system by certified mine examiners. BACKGROUND: METHANE EXPLOSIONS, FACE IGNITIONS AND NEED FOR AIR QUALITY MONITORING Accumulations of methane in face areas of underground coal mines frequently lead to ignitions that can cause burns, traumatic injuries and, in the case of the 2010 Upper Big Branch disaster, cause major explosions with multiple fatalities. Table 1 shows the number of reported face ignitions in U.S. coal mines between 2010 and 2014, based on statistical data published by MSHA (MSHA 2010 – 2014). Although there appears to be a downward trend in such ignition incidents over time, ignitions continue to occur with some regularity; and each ignition may cause a potentially catastrophic mine explosion.Per regulation, all U.S. coal mining machinery, continuous miners and longwall equipment, is outfitted with continuously monitoring methane sensors wired to cut power to the equipment as the methane level exceeds 1%. Face ignitions keep occurring because these sensors are usually not positioned in sufficiently close proximity to the coal cutting drums or to the freshly exposed coal face where the methane is most likely released. Therefore, methane may accumulate in explosive concentrations near the coal face and the cutting drums long before the gas concentration reaches the 1% level near the monitor and creates an alarm."

I know this is, at best, a frustrating period for the coal mining industry. About 20,000 miners have been laid off, mostly in the Appalachian and mid-western areas, and several mines are working less than 5 days a week; however, the industry is experiencing modern growth and, at least, there is the potential for future growth. The coal industry is probably only operating at about 80 percent of its present capacity, and it is certainly capable of helping this country solve its energy problems. Growth, as a rule, does not come easy, and growth in the coal industry is no exception to this rule. Many formidable challenges have to be overcome. As we all know, mining relies very heavily on the earth sciences, which have advanced significantly in the past few years, but we are always working in a changing environment which in most cases is a hostile environment. Large quantities of material are quickly extracted and rapidly moved in, generally speaking, a very confined area. The very nature of the mining business directly and constantly impacts our environment during this period in which the Nation and the world has become increasingly smaller and more concerned about protecting our environment. In addition, growth brings about an expanding work force which is increasingly younger and less experienced.

A dynamic programming algorithm is presented that takes a series of nested phases, a fixed mining rate schedule, a fixed plant production capacity schedule, and finds the mining and cutoff grade sequence that maximizes the Net Present Value. This tool allows the Mining Engineer to quickly look at project sensitivity to various production capacities, commodity prices, and costs. A description of the algorithm is given along with examples of how it has been used at Newmont.

The study analyzes the impact of the Continuous Personal Dust Monitor (CPDM) on reducing overexposures to coal mine dust. It compares compliance sampling data before and after the implementation of the CPDM and the 2014 MSHA dust rule. The results indicate a significant reduction in the percentage of samples exceeding the dust standard for various mining occupations, highlighting the effectiveness of the CPDM in improving miners’ health and safety.

"Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting appropriate systems at the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation.Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights into the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement throughout the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is often not available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available, it requires a major time commitment and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support.Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long, flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This article focuses on the optimization of the cable-bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine in Quebec, Canada by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

Historically, boulders are a frequent source of problem in soft ground tunneling. It is important to attempt to make an assessment of the nature and quantity of the boulders, although in many cases, it will be impossible to do so with great accuracy. Boulders, can pose major problems for TBMs in terms of slowing down or halting the tunnel advance, cutter damage, and abrasive wear. Although proper selection of the TBM and the cutterhead can reduce the risks, ground uncertainties still cannot be eliminated. The paper reviews a case study of a 3480 mm diameter EPB-TBM in Toronto utilized for completion of 2.5 km tunnel in Glacial Till, crossing the CP railway, HWY 401, a creek, and a confined aquifer. Alignment consists of multiple horizontal curves including small radius curves (r=210 m) at shafts breakthrough. An unexpected boulder cluster lead the contractor to experience extreme damages to the screw conveyor, RFJ system and causing a crack in main motor plate which resulted in losing one of the six main motors. This paper reviews contractor’s solutions and includes discussion on specific claim resolution method used in this project that can be of great value in preparation of specification and GBR for similar projects.

Accurate ore blending necessitates an in-depth understanding of movement trajectories of fragments and the spatial evolution of the displacement field in the bench during blasting, Accurate ore blending is currently one of the most complex challenges faced by mining engineers. In light of this problem, a systematic study was conducted in this paper using neural network and numerical simulation based on field monitoring data. A nonlinear mapping relationship was established between the mechanical parameters of rock mass and the displacements of the monitoring points. The measured displacements of monitoring points under blasting were input into the neural network, which used back-calculation to derive the mechanical properties of the rock mass. These parameters were then applied in a forward calculation to analyze the movement trajectory of the monitoring points. The results showed that the calculated displacements were in good agreement with the monitoring results during the. The average relative errors in the horizontal and vertical displacements were 4.12% and 15.2%, respectively. Furthermore, the muckpile profile was in an inverted recumbent “S” shape after bench blasting, which was consistent with the actual shape of the muckpile. This verified the rationality and accuracy of the method proposed in this study. Finally, the movement trajectories of particles in the bench and the spatial evolution law of the displacement field during bench blasting were determined based on the calculation results, offering theoretical support and fundamental information for accurate ore blending.

The mineral price assigned in mining project design is critical to determining the economic feasibility of a project. Nevertheless, although it is not difficult to find literature about market metal prices, it is much more complicated to achieve a specific methodology for calculating the value or which justifications are appropriate to include. This study presents an analysis of various methods for selecting metal prices and investigates the mechanisms and motives underlying price selections. The results describe various attitudes adopted by the designers of mining investment projects, and how the price can be determined not just by means of forecasting but also by consideration of other relevant parameters.

ABSTRACT Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models. INTRODUCTION There are many definitions of virtual reality (VR) that include various levels of immersion and features [1]. Some definitions refer to specific technologies [2], while others are limited to visualization [3]. For this paper, a more general definition of VR will be adopted. VR is defined as the collection of hardware and software that interactively engages users and stimulates their senses within a synthetic or virtual environment. From a hardware standpoint, this can include anything from a phone to a head-mounted display (HMD) to a large-scale theater as well as speakers, microphones, haptic sensors, and interaction devices. The software used to create virtual environments (VEs) generally includes a game engine, custom software components and libraries, and two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphical assets. Recent hardware and software advances have increased the fidelity and availability of VR. New and improved technologies including HMDs and high-resolution monitors and projectors can display sharper, more detailed visualizations. For example, in the past five years between the release of the Oculus Rift DK1 (2013) and the HTC Vive Pro (2018), there was a three-fold increase in resolution along with a 50% increase in the refresh rate. Furthermore, despite early claims that low-cost VR technology was readily available [4], computational power has not been sufficient to handle the large amount of data generated by these systems [5]. In the past five years, however, rendering speeds have more than doubled and memory has more than tripled [6], allowing these visualizations to be incorporated into higher-complexity and -fidelity VEs that more closely mirror the real world. Similarly, software capabilities have also significantly improved through game engine advancements and feature development. In the past several years, game engines have added and improved features such as physics, lighting, platform support (e.g. Android), and asset development integration. Some of the current leading commercial game engines are Amazon Lumberyard, CryEngine, Unreal, and Unity, but this can quickly change as is evident in the literature [7, 8].

The Coeur d'Alene Mining District of northern Idaho is remarkable for its number of large ore bodies and for the amount of its historical production of lead, zinc and silver (Fig. 1). Since veins were first discovered in 1884, more than 127 Mt (140 million st) of ore have been produced from narrow, high-grade veins. Mining continues at the Lucky Friday, Galena and Sunshine mines (Fig. 2). All have been in production for decades. At these mines, more efficient mining and exploration techniques have reduced costs while adding significant new reserves. Even the old Bunker Hill Mine, where ore was first found in 1875, continues operation on a limited basis, partly involving production of world-class pyromorphite specimens. Until recently, the Coeur Mine was also a profitable silver producer. Other large producers have included the Star-Morning, Hecla, Page, Standard-Mammoth, Hercules and Gold Hunter mines (Fig. 2). The first deposits were discovered by prospectors who spilled over from the Murray gold mining district, 24 km (15 miles) to the north. The Bunker Hill Mine was founded the year after the first veins were discovered. Bunker Hill has now operated for more than 100 years. Production includes 2.3 Mt (2.6 million st) of lead, 1.1 Mt (1.2 million st) of zinc and 4.1 kt (132 million oz) of silver. Total district production through 1996 (Springer, 1997) amounted to 7.3 Mt (8.1 million st) of lead, 3 Mt (3.3 million st) of zinc, and 34.5 kt (1.109 billion oz) of silver. This record establishes the district as the largest recorded producer of silver in the world, while also yielding major quantities of lead and zinc. Only Potosi, Bolivia, may have produced more silver, although records are unclear. Despite the district's longevity, historic production and current activity, the published literature on the district lags behind with regard to recent concepts of district geology. The most recent comprehensive US Geological Sur- vey (USGS) bulletins (Hobbs et al., 1965; Fryklund, 1964) are dated. Much research in the last half century has been short-lived or geographically restricted because the district is large and its geology is complex - and even this research tends to remain unpublished. It focuses on diagnosing ventilation system failures caused by roadway faults that alter airflow resistance. The paper proposes using an improved Support Vector Machine (SVM) method to identify the fault location based on changes in air volume detected by wind speed sensors. The approach involves building a sensitivity 0-1 matrix and establishing a roadway fault scope library. The improved SVM method is tested on the Daming coal mine, demonstrating its effectiveness in diagnosing fault locations, reducing training time, and improving accuracy compared to traditional SVM.

The Fence Lake Project is located in the Salt Lake coal field, an extension of the San Juan Basin. Geologic formations exposed in the Project area range in age from late Cretaceous to Quaternary. Coal is encountered in the Moreno Hill Formation (upper Cretaceous). Salt River Project (SRP) followed the basic textbook approach for the exploration, regional appraisal, detailed reconnaissance, detailed surface appraisal and three dimensional sampling (physical exploration). SRP is exploring this property as a potential fuel source for the Coronado Generating Station. Therefore, for the physical exploration stage, the quality sampling program was designed from a utility company viewpoint to determine possible impacts to the Station. Exploration drilling was completed in spring, 1982; September, 1982, and summer, 1984. Engineering, environmental, and land acquisition studies were added in the Summer, 1984 Program to more closely evaluate the potential Fence Lake Project coal supply option for the Coronado Generating Station. Studies, including drilling, are ongoing-at this time.

Chlorination and carbochlorination processes have industrial applications in metallurgical activity for extraction and purification of uncommon metals such as rare earth elements (REE). This study reviews the chlorination and carbochlorination reactions of light REE (LREE) oxides with chlorine considering the thermodynamic, stoichiometric, and kinetic aspects of the reactions. Lanthanides between lanthanum to gadolinium were considered as LREE, in agreement with previous literature, and the results were detailed in this review. LREE were analyzed taking into account their oxidation states and were divided into three groups accordingly. The results presented show that, although the LREE are chemically similar, their behaviors during the reactions with Cl2 and Cl2–C, and the different LREE-O–Cl compounds formed, have particularities. It was observed that gadolinium, in both thermodynamic calculations and experimental results, presents some differences, and it can be considered intermediate between light and heavy REE; i.e., reactions between LREE2O3 and Cl2(g) begin at approximately 250 °C, except for Gd2O3 that begins at 327 °C. The present work will contribute to a better understanding of the chemistry of LREE oxides and Cl2 under different conditions and the products obtained in the LREE–O––Cl2(g) and LREE–O–C–Cl2(g) systems.

"Early on Jan. 9, 2014, approximately 37,800 L (10,000 gal) of crude 4-methylcyclohexanemethanol (MCHM) leaked from a storage tank sitting on the bank of the Elk River near Charleston, WV (WVDEP, 2014; CSB, 2014). MCHM is a chemical commonly used in preparation of fine coal and is considered nonhazardous in terms of transportation, storage regulations and also toxicity (CDC, 2014a). Freedom Industries Inc., a producer and vendor of specialty chemical products, had acquired the storage facility from Etowah River Terminal, LLC just a few weeks prior in December 2013 (WVDEP, 2014; Freedom, 2005). The direct cause of the spill was ultimately determined to be two small holes in the base of the 76-year-old tank, which were created due to corrosion damage (Bauerlein and McWhirter, 2014).The spill site was located a little more than 1.6 km (1 mile) upstream from the intake of a municipal water treatment facility operated by West Virginia American Water (WVAW), which serves a population of 300,000 across nine counties in central West Virginia (CDC, 2014a). In a matter of hours, the leaked MCHM made its way through the treatment facility and into the water of nearby homes and businesses, where its strong smell was noticed almost immediately. On the evening of the spill, WVAW concluded that its conventional treatment processes, which include carbon filters to remove a variety of contaminants from water, were not capable of fully removing the MCHM and a "Do Not Use" order was issued for all customers (WVAW, 2014a).With little information readily available regarding the potential human health effects of MCHM, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) quickly issued an advisory ruling that set a maximum screening level of 1 ppm for safe drinking water (CDC, 2014a). Based on this recommendation, the "Do Not Use" order remained in effect for a total of eight days, until Jan. 17, when the WVAW distribution water was confirmed to have MCHM concentrations below the approved level (WVAW, 2014a). However, due to the pungent odor of the chemical, its presence was still recognizable in the WVAW facility and in consumers’ tap water after the order was lifted (Manuel, 2014). Recent studies have shown that the chemical can be detected in water at sub-ppb concentrations, a fact that undoubtedly added to growing public concern (Rosen et al., 2014; Gallagher et al., 2014). In response to numerous complaints and demands, WVAW continued flushing the treatment facility and pipes until Feb. 25 when MCHM levels were measured below 2 ppb (WVAW, 2014b), and eventually replaced the affected filter media (WVAW, 2014c)."

A study consist in 20 column leach tests was performed for the "EI Arco" Copper ore deposit, located on Baja California, Mexico. The main purpose was to define the basic criteria like recovery and sulfuric acid consumption, for a commercial heap leach system design, to process the oxide Copper (Chrysocola) of the deposit. Leach parameters such as, amount of sulfuric acid in the cure solution, cure technique, particle size of the material, leach solution's flowrate application, leach solution's acid strength and height of the lifts, were evaluated to choose those parameters in which the results were the best ones for that particular design.

SEVERAL categories of storage are used depending on capacity. Operational storage, which is small in comparison with the market, facilitates handling surges of a few hours' or a few days' duration. Seasonal storage, usually larger, permits accumulation of product during sea- sons when demand is low, for delivery when demand is high. In producing areas, large storage may permit production at a uniform rate, without waste or distress sale. Near large markets such storage increases the efficiency of transportation, allows a more extensive or higher grade market to be served, and affords protection against interruption in delivery.

TBM utilization rate is a component of machine performance prediction and critical for developing a reliable estimate of the construction completion time and cost of the tunnel. Estimation of the utilization rate involves identifying and quantifying the time dedicated to each activity in a tunneling jobsite. Ring building is a common activity in TBM tunneling and takes a large amount of tunnel excavation time when using shielded TBMs. This paper concentrates on the effect of tunnel diameter on the duration of downtimes related to ring building and examines the impact of machine diameter on downtimes. For this purpose, the dependency of segment installation time to segment configuration, and also the diameter of the tunnel was investigated. Furthermore, the ring building time for four tunnels with different sizes of diameters and a variety of ring arrangement were analyzed and the relationship between TBM diameter and segment installation time and consequently TBM utilization was evaluated.

"Excavation and initial support of the New Irvington Tunnel presented significant challenges, including rapidly changing ground conditions, heavy ground loads, and squeezing. Such behaviors were anticipated from historic tunneling records of the adjacent Existing Irvington Tunnel, and extensive site investigation, but clearer understanding of their actual extent and causes has resulted from convergence measurements, observations of ground behavior, initial support monitoring and detailed geologic mapping. Time-dependent movements, documented hours to months after excavation in clay-rich rock and in moderately to intensely fractured rock, identified squeezing areas, allowed classification by currently-used predictive methods and added to the list of lessons learned in tunneling such ground. INTRODUCTION In March 2003 the San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) authorized funding for the $4.6 billion Water System Improvement Program (WSIP) to repair, replace, and seismically upgrade its water system. The program consists of 35 local projects located within San Francisco and 48 regional projects located in several counties from the Sierra foothills to the San Francisco Bay Area. The New Irvington Tunnel (NIT), a key component of the WSIP, is located east of Fremont in Alameda County, on the east side of San Francisco Bay. The NIT is a new 18,660 foot (5,689 m), redundant tunnel, 190 to 670 feet (58–204 m) offset from, and subparallel to the Existing Irvington Tunnel (EIT). Built between 1928 and 1932, the EIT was constructed with an unreinforced cast-in-place concrete lining and is vulnerable to damage in the event of a major earthquake along the two closest active faults. The Hayward Fault is located less than a mile west of the tunnel, and the Calaveras Fault is located half a mile east of the tunnel. Although the alignment does not intersect these faults, the shaking and sympathetic displacement along secondary faults that cross the tunnel alignment are potential hazards. The NIT provides a seismically reliable water transmission facility capable of withstanding earthquake damage and maintaining continuous water service after a major earthquake. The NIT also adds system redundancy and provides for operation flexibility of running water through both tunnels, or through one tunnel while the other is out of service for inspections and maintenance."
