This paper outlines the geotechnical exploration and design approach utilized for the Km 80 and Km 86 Tunnels on the British Columbia Railway Tumbler Ridge Branchline. Information from surface mapping, trenching and diamond drilling was used to prepare a rational support design using accepted rock mass classification systems. Four possible support types were developed and used as a basis for preparing a cost estimate and contract documents for the tunnels. A unit price contract was selected to provide flexibility and to enable rational selection of support based on actual ground conditions encountered during excavation. Although ground conditions along the tunnels are variable, the general geology and quantities of support installed were consistent with those estimated from the geotechnical investigation and design.

During the cyanide leaching process, gold and silver ores that come from the transition zones, which typically contains low levels of sulfide, may produce one or more of the following reduced sulfur species: sulfide ( HS−), polysulfides ( Sn 2−), thiocyanate ( SCN−), thiosulfate ( S2O3 2−), trithionate ( S3O6 2−), tetrathionate ( S4O6 2−), pentathionate ( S5O6 2−), hexathionate ( S6O6 2−). The actual speciation of the reduced sulfur species in the circuits will primarily depend on the redox potential, pH, cyanide levels, and existing sulfur species in recycled process water, as well as the presence of other reactive metal species. The development of an accurate analytical method for sulfur species in cyanide leaching units of gold ores where sulfur speciation occurs has an important role in explaining the metal recovery deviations. This study presents the speciation of sulfur species and the development of ion chromatography method to analyze reduced sulfur species thiocyanate ( SCN−), thiosulfate ( S2O3 2−), trithionate ( S3O6 2−), tetrathionate ( S4O6 2−) in cyanide leaching circuits for gold ores. The method developed has resulted in precise quantification of target sulfur species in leach solutions. Method development and validation results were illustrated on analytical graphs containing each species’ peak number, retention time (min), type, width (min), area (mAU*s), height (mAU), and area distribution (%) of the peak.

Rhenium (Re) is one of the rarest elements on earth and is a designated critical element in the United States and European Union for its uses in superalloys. Unusually among critical elements, Re is produced entirely as a byproduct of molybdenite (MoS2) mining, as pure Re minerals are extremely rare. However, Re concentration in natural molybdenites varies from a few parts per trillion to tens of percent. There are few known consistent patterns and no firmly established reason for this variation, making it difficult to use molybdenite Re content as a proxy for metal grades, a vector to high grades, a clue to the geological and geochemical nature of the ore deposit, a guide to overall Re resources or for any other of the applications that have been suggested for it over time.

"INTRODUCTION Newmont’s Twin Creeks operation, part of its Nevada operations, produces gold from two large open pit mines. Mined ore is processed at one of three on-site facilities: a refractory mill with two autoclaves, an oxide mill and heap leaching facilities. Twin Creeks also processes various off-site sourced concentrates and ore including high grade underground ore from the Turquoise Ridge joint venture with Barrick Gold Corporation. This paper discusses Twin Creeks’ strategic mine planning process which is part of an in-depth continuous improvement program called “Full Potential.” The process involves cost analysis, phase design validations, life-of-mine production scheduling optimization, mill blending strategy and stockpile management. Through this Full Potential strategic planning, Twin Creeks is creating significant value by increasing near term free cash flow and life of mine net present value (“NPV”) and achieving cost reductions. TWIN CREEKS OPERATION Twin Creeks is one of the major gold producers in Newmont’s Nevada operations (see Figure 1, 2 and 3). Located approximately 15 miles north of Golconda, Twin Creeks produced approximately 28 % of the Nevada operation’s 2013 gold production of 1.8 million ounces (Newmont 2014). The production included Turquoise Ridge sourced gold ore from the joint venture (75% Barrick Gold Corporation, 25% Newmont).At Twin Creeks, there are two large open pits, named Mega Pit and Vista Pit (see Figure 4, 5 and 6). There are 3 to 5 phases in Mega Pit and 2 to 5 phases in Vista Pit depending on the gold price assumption. There is also an underground exploration project at the bottom of the Vista Pit. Twin Creeks produces gold from a variety of ore types requiring different processing techniques depending on economic and metallurgical characteristics. To ensure the best use of processing assets, engineering and processing groups at Twin Creeks utilize a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (“MILP”) model to guide the flow of mine sequences and material routing to various process facilities (Kawahata, Schumacher and Hufford 2013)."

Mine fires, explosions, spontaneous heating and inundations are among the leading causes of catastrophes (unplanned, temporary sealing and recovery of major mines). Many reports are available that detail company efforts to re-establish mining operations and agency efforts to regulate away the causes, but the associated costs are rarely included. The increasing scale of coal operations concentrates earning potential and the financial risk of business interruption in fewer locations. Underground coal mine catastrophes are low probability, high loss events that happen nearly every year. This paper will present an evaluation of coal mine catastrophes from case studies.

INTRODUCTION This contract is the most northerly portion of the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago's Tunnel and Reservoir Plan. (TARP) The project begins at Addison Street in Chicago and proceeds northerly approximately ten miles to end at Wilmette Harbor and Lake Michigan. The project which consists of 2 work shafts, 32 drop shafts, 7.322 km (24,020 ft.) of 6.7 m (22 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel, 8.458 km (27,750 ft.) of 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter circular rock tunnel and miscellaneous rock bolting and grouting, was bid for a total cost of $63,140,480. The tunnel invert elevation varies from 65.5 m (215 ft.) to 77.4 m (254 ft.) below the ground surface, which places the tunnel in a rock formation of dolomite limestone. At the tunnel invert, the unconfined compressive strength of the limestone varies from 96 MPa (14,000 psi) to 152 MPa (22,000 psi). The 6.7 (22 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 10.9 cu m. (14.2 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel while the 9.2 m (30 ft.) diameter tunnel required the mining of 20.1 cu m (26.3 cu yd.) of rock per lineal foot of tunnel. The total cubic meters of rock required to be excavated from both tunnels was 818,821 cu m (1,070,978 cu yd.). All of this will be mined by tunnel boring machines (TBM). These tunnels were not to be lined with concrete. The thirty two drop shafts have upper portions that are cylindrical in the overburden and rock sections. Historically, there have been many events of mine fires and explosions recorded in the United States and other countries that have demonstrated the existence of explosive methane-air mixtures, herein referred to as explosive gas zones (EGZs) [1]. The risk of mine explosions can increase if these EGZs migrate out from the gob into the surrounding mine entries — a phenomenon known as gob breathing. A number of 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations using various magnitudes and periods of barometric pressure variation have indicated that the EGZ outgassing potentially occurs due to lags in pressure, which are strongly influenced by mine conditions and ventilation systems. Early-warning systems with real-time pressure monitoring and the application of gob ventilation boreholes are recommended to detect and mitigate explosion hazards from gob outgassing.

Martin County Coal Corporation is located in Martin County, Kentucky in the Appalachian coal fields, near the West Virginia border. The total leasehold covers more than 33 000 acres. Total annual production at Martin County Coal Corporation is currently 2,500,000 tons, but in certain years exceeded 3,000,000 tons. Approximately 45 percent of the annual production comes from two surface mines. The balance is produced from five underground mines. Martin County Coal Corporation's work schedule consists of 240 days/year, two nine-hours shifts/day.

The semiautogenous grinding (SAG) mill is one of the most important pieces of equipment in the comminution of materials. Its objective is to reduce the size of the ore until the ore can be released and continue on its transformation process. Although it is a simple process that involves impact, abrasion and attrition, its energy consumption is extremely high and inefficient, with no more of 17 percent of the energy supplied going toward size reduction. This gives rise to an important challenge because any improvement generates great economic benefits.

Leaching studies of magnesite obtained from Tamilnadu Magnesite Limited, Salem, have been carried out using hydrochloric acid leaching and percentage of magnesium chloride recovered was estimated. The variables considered in this study were the following: duration of leaching, volume percentage of hydrochloric acid, temperature, and pulp density. Percentage recovery of magnesium chloride increased with duration of the leaching, volume % of concentrated hydrochloric acid, and temperature. Percentage recovery of magnesium chloride decreased with increase of pulp density. The optimum conditions found to be pulp density (10%), hydrochloric acid concentration (30%), duration of leaching (2 h), and temperature (348.15 K). Iron was removed by treating the leach liquor with hydrogen peroxide and by raising the pH to 3.5–4. The purified leach liquor was subjected to spray drying for producing high pure magnesium chloride.

Ferrochromium produced by smelting chromite ores is an important alloying component in the steel industry. Ore, coke and fluxes are mixed and reacted in an arc furnace for a smelting process of ferrochromium. In ad-dition to this process, pre-reduction of chromite ore with carbon is an important industrial process. In all these processes, the mechanism and kinetics of reduction of chromite with carbon play an important role. In this study, the reduction of Turkish chromite ore with carbon was investigated. Chromite and carbon were ground to three different particle size groups. Chromite was mixed with carbon in stoichiometric and excess ratios. The samples were reduced under argon atmosphere at temperatures between 1,200° and 1,350°C. The formed phases and alloy compositions of reduced chromite samples were analyzed by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscope (SEM) with EDAX and X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). Experimental results showed that the degree of reduction and the reduction rate increased with increasing temperature and decreasing particle size. The highest degree of reduction, 61.4%, was obtained at 1,350°C. The reduction took place in three stages: Stage 1: transformation of Fe3+ to Fe2+ and formation of metallic nuclei, Stage 2: formation of metallic crust around the particles and Stage 3: growth of the metallic crust and coalescence of the metallic phase.

The Eldorado Epidemiology Project formally began in late 1978. It consists of a retrospective cohort study, to be followed by and to leave in place the mechanism for a prospective cohort monitoring program. These present and future activities are intended to merge into one another. The current study includes all Eldorado employees past and present for whom records are available. The objectives of the undertaking are - 1) to obtain cause-and-effect, dose-response data with which to evaluate the risks to workers in radon and radon daughter containing atmospheres, and to provide additional quantitative information on which to base possible improvements in working conditions; 2) to identify any dead employees of E.N.L. whose cause of death suggests that a potential compensation claim right exists for their survivors, and to similarly identify living ex-employees of E.N.L. whose work histories and states of health suggest potential compensation claim rights. The nature of the study has been determined by the history of Eldorado, which will be described briefly. Eldorado began (as Eldorado Gold Mines) in the late 1920's, operating relatively unsuccessfully in Manitoba. In 1930-31 the emphasis shifted from gold to uranium, and what became the Port Radium mine was first staked. From the very early 1930's until 1942 the company's purpose was almost entirely devoted to the mining of pitchblende - uranium ore - from the Port Radium site, and the extraction of radium from this ore at the Port Hope refinery in Ontario, a process from which the uranium was a largely stockpiled byproduct. In 1942 the company was requested by the Canadian government to accelerate the production of ore, and of uranium. At the same time, all its stockpile of uranium (then being stored in silos as a "waste" product which might later "come in") was acquired for the Manhattan Project. In 1944 the company shares were bought by the Canadian government and the company itself became Eldorado Mining and Refining (1944) Limited; it has operated as a Crown corporation ever since. The name was changed to Eldorado Nuclear Limited in 1968. The Port Radium mine was closed in 1960, and since 1953 the Beaverlodge uranium mine complex has operated on the northern shores of Lake Athabasca. Radium production was discontinued in 1954 when the radium circuit was taken out of the refinery, and since that time the refinery's products have been various types of refined uranium (uranium dioxide, uranium trioxide and uranium hexafluoride) plus metallic uranium. The refinery, of course, processes the company's own yellowcake but as it is one of only five refineries in the western world, most of its work consists of custom refining for a large variety of customers. In addition to the mining and the refining operations, there have been three other divisions involved, and these are, respectively, Aviation, R. & D., and Exploration, in addition to the financial, corporate, administrative and support activities. MATERIAL AND METHODS The human study population (Abbatt, J.D. et al., 1980) consists of all Eldorado employees who have ever worked for E.N.L. and for whom records are available. The total nominal roll to December 31, 1980 is approximately 21,000 and consists of employees of the Mining, Refining, R. & D., Aviation and Exploration Divisions, as well as a relatively small number of other employees (Head Office, etc.). The basic epidemiologic design, as has been mentioned, is for a retrospective cohort study merging into a prospective cohort study, and depending very heavily upon automated record linkage and file matching. The original design called for an initial assembly of the bulk of the nominal roll, prior to the first of two matches with the National Mortality File. The first of these two matches is now complete and the second is to be separated from it in time by 18 months to two years. The second match will be the definitive match prior to the analysis, the interpretation of the data, and the publication of the results. The period between the two matches was designed to permit completion of the nominal roll, including: - addition of previously missing individuals and groups, elimination of duplicates, and amplification of identifying information, - assembly of work histories and exposure information for each individual, - digestion and application of lessons and modifications resulting from the first match with the National Mortality File at Statistics Canada, - preparation of files for the definitive second match. The analysis of data will be carried out by the National Cancer Institute of Canada Epidemiology Unit based at the University of Toronto. This group, with whom Eldorado Nuclear has a memorandum of understanding, have for a variety of reasons, including their familiarity with record linkage and their expertise, been members of the Project Team since

The Ipueira III chrome mine is located in the northeastern part of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Extraction is actually at depths less than 300 m, but below level 200 serious environmental problems have been encountered with respect to control of air quality, toxic gas, dust and thermal comfort. At the request of the mining company the University of São Paulo started a research program to investigate the origin and occurrence of the critical problems and to propose solutions. A ventilation survey was carried out first which revealed the existence of several air leakages and short circuits that contributed to substantial reductions in the air supply to some of the main producing levels. Computer simulation of the ventilation network showed that extending the intake air shaft to deeper levels was the most convenient and economic solution to improve the air quality. The ventilation survey was followed by a mapping of the toxic gas emissions and thermal comfort levels in several parts of the mine. The air quality conditions were evaluated as a function of gas emission and heat generation associated with production and development activities. The results show that environmental conditions are already critical in most of the working levels and neither an increase in production nor deepening of the mine can be taken up without substantial changes in the ventilation system. INTRODUCTION Environmental concern is growing in Brazil and several underground mines are starting environmental engineering programs. The LACASEMIN - Laboratory of Environmental Control and Mine Safety of the Mining Engineering Department of the University of São Paulo - was contacted by Mineração Vale do Jacurici to start a research program for investigating the origin and occurrence of environmental problems that existed in the Ipueira III chrome mine. This research program involved field measurements of air quantities with gas levels monitoring, evaluation of heat stress parameters, determination of adequate flow patterns through computer simulations and training of mine technical staff. This paper presents the results of the first 4 months of this research program. The Ipueira III mine is located in the northeastern part of the state of Bahia, near the city of Senhor do Bonfim at about 400 km inland from the state capital city of Salvador. Chromite mineralization is quite widespread in this area and often associated with mafic and ultramafic rocks which cut across regional gneisses and migmatites. ROM production in 1992 varied between 25,000 to 40,000 tons per month, 25% being of lump type (38% of Cr2O3) and 75% being of fines. Lump is manually separated and fines are concentrated in a nearby plant. All the production goes directly to the group processing steel plants near Salvador. The Ipueira III mine is currently under some adverse economic situation because of imports from South Africa and Russia, which have better grades and sometimes a lower content of phosphorous. Consequently there has been little progress in the development of new mines and even in those currently under operation the extraction is becoming more difficult due to the lack of investment in improving mining methods and ventilation systems. In spite of such difficulties the company has backed up studies for initiating an environmental engineering investigation of the Ipueira III mine. MINING METHODS AND VENTILATION SCHEMES The mining methods adopted have changed as a function of extraction depth, rock mass strength and ore body geometry. The primary reason pigments are used in plastics is to impart a desired color to the plastic. Color is one of the more important assign considerations associated with today's market oriented society. Secondary reasons for adding pigments to plastics include: 1. Improved UV stability 2. Enhancement to selected physical properties 3. Changes in optical properties Pigments may be used at loadings as high as 20% or as low as .001%. Generally the loading levels are between 0.2% and 2.0%. Pigments may be added to the plastic either by the manufacturer of the plastic, or by the user of the plastic. If the customer buys material that is already colored, it is referred to as "pre-colored". If the customer buys uncolored plastic and adds colorants, the process is referred to as "in-house" coloring.

The concrete lining for a long 8.05 km (5 mi) section of New York City Water Tunnel No. 3 was cast in place. The contractor, Grow-Perini-Skanska, placed over76,841 m3 (100,505 cy) of concrete, pouring 24 hours per day, 5 days per week. The concrete was dropped 204 m (670 ft) to the tunnel level, transported by rail to a concrete remixer and pump, and placed in 146.3m (480 ft) of full circle forms. Some of the many challenges include the sheer magnitude of the job, navigating through drifts, a raise and curves, dealing with ground water inflows, and placing the concrete within time limits.

The objective of the project is to construct and operate a pan-European underground drainage and minewater management research centre, which would be the hub for data gathering and dissemination in real time of new data to users for analysis and interpretation, as well as serving as a model for consistency, for other centres at key water management sites throughout Europe which would feed data in real time through the hub. The data from the centre will be essential for informing River Basin Management Plans arising from the EU Water Framework Directive, which is an important driver for the project. The implementation of this Directive sets out a requirement for all Member States to develop River Basin Management Plans for all water resource systems. The facility would be a major contribution to sustainable water management in Europe.

Political risk is an integral part of the mining business in Northern Andean countries. Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, and Venezuela all have a higher than average political risk compared with other South American countries. Successful operations in such contexts require: 1. Good political risk information; 2. A thoroughgoing political risk management plan; and 3. A strategy to deal with political risk perception on the part of the investing public. Obtaining quality political risk information, developing a political risk management plan, and addressing political risk perception are the foci of this work.

The ability of companies and countries to mine copper and other mineral commodities competitively and in the process to generate new wealth depends on their mineral endowment. Chile, for example, produces and exports copper because it is well endowed with high-quality, low-cost deposits. This production creates wealth that benefits mining companies and their stockholders, the government, local communities, as well as copper consumers around the world. The widespread perception that mineral endowment must largely determine competitiveness, or what economists call comparative advantage, must be true at any particularly moment. Countries with abundant reserves must be competitive. This follows from the definition of reserves — the quantity of a mineral commodity found in discovered deposits that are profitable to exploit under current conditions. As a result, it is a tautology and not particularly interesting. The important question is what causes reserves to change over time, producing in the process new wealth and shifts in competitiveness?
