Systematic planning of underground work is increasingly important in this era of advancement of rapid underground excavation techniques. The day when planning consisted of deciding which men would shovel and which would push wheelbarrows - and the answer to any problem was more men - has faded into the past. The modern underground constructor faces economic and competitive conditions which demand exacting planning, logistics and scheduling; the most efficient operating methods and equipment known; and realistic, comprehensive, analytical risk evaluation with adequate contingencies or other protection. Proper planning to cover all these elements - plus one other element: old fashioned "good luck" - will insure a successful underground project. Underground work, because of its inherent characteristics, is among the most risky types of construction. The forecasting of underground conditions is at this time only educated predictions based on sometimes faulty data, insufficient data, or no data at all. The predicted conditions of numerous operations have deviated far from the actual conditions encountered. Opportunities for error exist in profusion seldom present for surface operations. Other than this unusual risk factor, the planning for underground work does not differ greatly from planning for surface work. In planning and starting an operation there is seldom available the information or time to thoroughly analyze all unknowns. It then becomes necessary to develop a plan predicated on assumptions and trade-offs that appear to be safe and economical and to add time and cost contingencies that will provide some degree of protection. The characteristics of the igneous and metamorphic bedrock, extra-hard and abrasive, of the Guadarrama Tunnels, a bi-tube project of length 28.4 km without any intermediate attack, are first commented upon. Next, a detailed discussion is given of the most relevant aspects of the performance of the four double shield type TBMs. The experience of this leads to various recommendations to be borne in mind in future designs of TBM having to work in rock of similar characteristics.

The process of selectively reducing limonite ore involves adding 10 wt% sodium sulfide and using anthracite as a reducing agent in varying amounts (5, 10, 15, and 20 wt%). The research aims to optimize the extraction process by studying how factors like reduction temperature, holding time, and reducing agent dosage affect on iron and nickel content and recovery. The ideal conditions identified are a temperature of 1150 °C, a 10 wt% additive, and a corresponding 10 wt% reducing agent amount, with a crucial 60-min reduction process. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show dominant phases like ironnickel (FeNi), iron sulfide (FeS), fayalite (Fe2SiO4), and wustite (FeO) under these conditions, indicating complex chemical interactions. Impressive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) test results precisely measure a nickel component with a 3.03 wt% and a recovery rate of 89.32%, highlighting the process’s effectiveness in extracting potential from limonitic nickel ore. The resulting ferronickel alloy has a controlled particle size of 29.23 µm. The study emphasizes the influence of sodium sulfide and anthracite dosage on the selective reduction of limonite ore.

Shovel excavation constitutes a significant component of production costs in any surface mining operation. This makes shovel loading an important cost center that needs to be improved to lower production costs. Optimization of tool design will improve energy efficiency in earthmoving operations. However, modeling the soil-tool interaction is a complex process due to the fact that forces for excavating particulate material are functions of many variables. The magnitude of this resisting force depends not only on the type of soil but on the size, shape and orientation of the cutting element. Moreover, part of this complexity is attributed to the fact that the behavior of the material during excavation is not yet well understood. For the past five decades, researchers have mostly used the passive earth pressure theory to study the soil failure patterns around a cutting tool and to develop force prediction models for design optimization with some success. Although the force models developed from the passive pressure theory have been successful to some extent, they can hardly be extended to a general case because of the underlying assumptions and simplification of tool shapes. This paper aims at reviewing some of the existing empirical and analytical methods of cutting and excavation tool modeling with a focus on their merits and limitations. The paper also explores the use of numerical methods, specifically the discrete element method, for dealing with the unresolved aspects of soil dynamics in excavation.

Additional field evaluations of a modified continuous miner using a new spray system and modified scrubbers have been conducted by the authors. In this demonstration, a comprehensive package for dust control on a continuous miner which included previously developed modifications to the scrubber, scrubber intakes and the innovative chassis spray system was demonstrated. Side-by-side comparisons of the modified miner and regular miner indicated that the miner operator with the modified miner was exposed to 62% less respirable dust. Ram car operators with the modified miner had 38% less respirable dust exposure and the return air on the modified miner had 19% less respirable dust. The mining conditions during side-by-side testing were very comparable. These results support the findings of the modified spray system studies conducted earlier at different mines in Illinois on four occasions and the modified scrubber system field evaluation studies.

"The present study was carried out to develop an economically feasible and environmentally friendly technique to extract metals such as Al, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni from electronic scrap by employing Penicillium chrysogenum strain KBS3. Studies were carried out in various leaching modes, including one-step leaching with combined growth and leaching phases (Mode 1), two-step leaching with alternative growth and leaching phases (Mode 2), spent medium leaching with separated growth and leaching phases (Mode 3), leaching with fresh growth medium without fungal culture (Mode 4), leaching with deionized water (Mode 5) and leaching with commercial organic acids (Mode 6). The main lixiviants produced in leaching Mode 1 were citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids in concentrations of 12, 2.5, 1.8 and 152 mM, whereas in leaching Mode 2, the concentrations were 15, 0.5, 1.0 and 1,162 mM, respectively. In leaching Mode 3, 63 mM citric acid, 23 mM tartaric acid and 29 mM oxalic acid was observed. At 5% pulp density, both leaching Modes 1 and 2 showed similar metal extraction yields from the electronic scrap at 35º C. Approximately 96% Al, 98% Zn, 48% Cu, 25% Fe, 66% Pb and 73% Ni were extracted in leaching Mode 1 in 14 days. In leaching Mode 3, 85% Al, 81% Zn, 97% Cu, 22% Fe, 50% Pb and 63% Ni were extracted in 14 days. The extraction yield of Cu was much lower in leaching Modes 1 and 2 (48- 50%) than in leaching Mode 3 (97%), as well as in leaching Mode 6 (98%) with organic acids, including citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids.IntroductionTechnical innovations in electrical and electronic equipment with new functionalities and designs stimulate consumer purchasing and lead a rapid increase in the production of waste materials. Terazono et al. (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al. (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category, which emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. The recycling of electronic waste is an important subject, not only from the perspective of waste treatment, but also from the perspective of the recovery of valuable materials. However, the recycling of electronic scrap is still limited, due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al., 2005).Bioleaching-based processes offer a number of advantages over conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). These advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and ecofriendly approaches and the generation of less active leach residue relative to other metallurgical processes. Although biohydrometallurgical processes have been successfully applied to the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al., 2003; Rawlings, 2002), data pertaining to the application of these processes for the extraction of electronic scrap are still scarce. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for the extraction of metals from electronic scrap/ printed circuit boards (Brandl et al., 2001; Faramarzi et al., 2004; Ilyas et al., 2007; Ilyas et al., 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans), cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has several advantages, including (i) the ability to grow at a higher pH, thus making it more suitable for the bioleaching of alkaline solid waste; (ii) a generally faster leaching process with a shorter lag phase and (iii) the chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g., organic acids) with metal ions, thus reducing toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller and Schinner, 1993; Aung and Ting, 2005)."

Large diesel engines provide the mining industry the substantial power and torque needed to move large amounts of material efficiently. But the stresses generated by such power and torque necessitate complex maintenance programs to ensure the utmost operating capabilities are not compromised. Of all its available sensors, the Exhaust Temperature differential between the right and left banks can provide the most valuable indicator of the overall operating condition and potential degradation of a large diesel engine. BHP Billiton Escondida Mining has implemented real-time remote monitoring, diagnostics, reporting, and tracking of Exhaust Temperature differential using Modular® technology. As a result of the processes and procedures put into place surrounding their MineCare maintenance management system, Escondida has proactively replaced over 300 injectors, resulting in an increase of 4% in Engine availability.

The tailings from beneficiation of Florida phosphate ore contain considerable phosphate values. These tailings are currently discharged into large disposal areas. More than three million tons of P2O5 are discarded with the phosphatic slimes (clays) in Florida each year. These phosphatic clays not only create one of the most difficult disposal problems in the mining industry, but also represent a tremendous loss of P2O5. As the quality and quantity of Florida’s phosphate reserves diminish, recovery of phosphate values from these wastes becomes more vital. This will also significantly lengthen the life of these important phosphate resources. Thus, it is the goal of this study is to recover more than 80% of the phosphate values in phosphatic clays. A systematic study to characterize samples taken from inactive disposal area has been conducted. The data suggest that natural segregation takes place in the settling pond. In other words, coarser particles settle closer to the feeding point of the pond. Flotation tests were conducted using the +325 mesh fraction of samples obtained from sites close to the feeding point (sample# A) and further from that point (sample# B) and (sample# C) which is even further away from the feeding point. The results show the following: Sample# A gives the highest grade and recovery, followed by that of # B and then of # C. There is a great potential to upgrade sample# A where concentrates of high grade (68.9-70.1 % BPL or 31.5- 32.1% P2O5) and recovery (~86.6-95.4 %) can be obtained under the investigated operating conditions (1.0 – 2.0 kg/ton sodium silicate and 1.5—3.0 kg/ton collector mixture of fatty acid and fuel oil). The mineralogical and chemical analysis of all samples is presented in this paper for comparison. Only in this paper, the flotation data of (site # A) are discussed below.

Newmont?s Twin Creeks Mine, located in northern Nevada, is producing gold ore from surface mining operations. The ore is currently processed at three different on site facilities depending on the ore type and the grade. The processing facilities operate under stringent geochemical blending constraints that must be met from mine ore deliveries and off site sourced ore. To analyze various strategic options, the technical team utilizes the mathematical optimization approach. However, due to the size and the complexity of the operation, there are unique challenges in optimizing life of mine production scheduling. This paper describes those challenges and the methodology developed to take advantage of different scheduling software systems that effectively compensate each other and result in reasonable guidance. The paper also describes how those scheduling results are reflected in detailed mine plan and cost estimate work.

A prevalent technique for the recovery of silver from wastes generated in silver-tungsten electrical contact fabrication is electrowinning. Such scrap is placed in a permeable plastic basket which constitutes the anode compartment and this basket is suspended in a larger cell in which the cathode is mounted. A silver nitrate solution is used as the electrolyte and, upon application of an electric field, the silver migrates to the cathode where it deposits out. At times, there is tungsten migration to the cathode compartment and consequent co-deposition with the silver. This W contamination, which may amount to several thousand ppm, necessitates additional purification of the deposited Ag and its removal would therefore be advantageous. The elimination of the W impurity would also extend the operating period of the cell with corresponding increase in the Ag output and savings in labor costs.

CRU estimates that the global supply of metallurgical grade alumina (MGA) grew by 5 percent during 2005 to a little more than 61 Mt (67 million st). About 30.7 Mt (33.8 million st), or 50.3 percent, of that originated from Oceania (principally due to the commissioning of the CAR refinery in Australia) and Latin America. In this context, Chinese production surged by 20.5 percent year-on-year to 7.7 Mt (8.5 million st) on the crest of a 17-percent rise in that country’s primary aluminium production. Meanwhile, on the demand side, there was a 6.7 percent climb year-on-year in global consumption to 62.3 Mt (68.6 million st). This reflected a healthy demand for primary metal from aerospace, construction, packaging and passenger transportation (to a lesser degree) in the United States, China, Brazil, South Korea and India. So there was an overall supply deficit of more than 1.2 Mt (1.3 million st). This, combined with an 18.3-percent diminution in closing stocks (down to 35 days of requirement), lifted the average spot price of MGA by 17.6 percent year-on-year to US$448/t (US$406/st).

Mining managers trying to rapidly reduce production costs tend to implement a traditional set of top-down managerial practices: layoffs of employees, renegotiation of supplier contracts, cancellation of employee training, restrictions on travel, reductions in office supplies, and so forth. While these practices do reduce costs, the benefit is often limited in both magnitude and duration, and the workforce is usually left demoralized. Successful cost-cutters take a different approach. They make the continuous reduction of costs a priority for all members of the organization, whether managers or workers. The culture of these firms emphasizes the commitment, voluntarily given, of individuals and work groups to this goal. Cost cutting practices often reject all of the traditional methods mentioned above, but are far more numerous, innovative, and successful. This culture of cost reduction is the result of a set of leadership competencies that establish direction for the organization, align the organization’s various constituencies with this direction, and motivate and inspire the organization. Dramatic cost reduction then becomes a routine task rather than a heroic achievement.

The paper presents an analysis and discussion of the underground ventilation system at the waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP), with particular emphasis on specific repository-related requirements and the gradual evolution of engineering designs relative to the WIPP Project scope. The underground facility has been constructed with three shafts. Additional studies, coupled with actual site-specific experience, have established? the need for construction of a fourth ventilation shaft to double the under-ground airflow. As a research pilot project, and the first of its type in combining mining and nuclear technologies, the WIPP Project is accumulating data and experience that may be fruitfully applied in the future designs of ventilation systems for planned commercial nuclear waste repositories.

The residues produced during the incineration of leather scraps contain significant amount of chromium which can be recovered and reused in the tanning industry. The objective of this study is to develop a cost effective method for chromium recovery from leather ashes produced during the incineration of leather scraps using a fluidized bed incinerator. The entire process investigated involves fusion of leather ash with sodium carbonate in air to oxidise chromium to sodium chromate, leaching with distilled water to dissolve chromates, and chromium reduction from the hexavalent to trivalent state by sodium thiosulphate solution. The main factors affecting chromium extraction, such as temperature, reaction time, and sodium carbonate to leather ash ratio, were investigated. Based on the results obtained, almost 100% Cr extraction can be obtained at 700°C fusion temperature, sodium carbonate to ash weight ratio equal to 3 and retention time longer than 50 min.

This paper reviews the growth pattern in bauxite and alumina production, and primary aluminum smelting through 1980. Because the alumina and primary metal are intermediate products of the major integrated aluminum companies, it is not possible to determine their production costs. The costs indicated in this paper are order of magnitude costs based on published figures and the market price of these products. The conclusions in this paper indicate the general pattern of growth in the aluminum industry and are not meant to be a substitute for the feasibility and economic studies that are needed for individual bauxite mining, alumina refining and aluminum smelting projects.

Transportation tunnels are highly sensitive to ground movements and are required to be stable and secure for safe operation. In urban areas, the interaction between tunnels and adjacent piles, which are widely used to support buildings and other structures, requires careful consideration. The seismic response of tunnels may vary depending on the lateral stiffness and strength of the tunnel walls, while the axial loading and seismic impact of adjacent piles may cause soil displacement and stress changes that can damage the tunnel lining. As a result, tunnel owners often impose strict limits on the design of new piles lying close to existing tunnels including maximum allowable tunnel deformation, stress change limits, and minimum tunnel to pile separation distances. This paper describes a numerical analysis of the inuence of the axial loading and seismic impact of bored pile foundations on subway tunnels, undertaen using the nite element software laxis D. ased on the results of the numerical analysis, the paper suggests a more realistic and less conservative approach for designing piles in close proximity to transportation tunnels. Coal produced from surface mines in the Western United States is becoming a more important part of this nation's economy as other types of fuels become scarce. This paper reports the investigation of alternative methods of handling the parting between two coal seams. The results of this investigation are presented as the engineering-economic aspects of alternative parting handling methods involving stowing or back filling techniques. The coal and parting characteristics were selected as being representative of those under consideration or actively mined in the West. The basic philosophy of evaluation is to establish a mine-within-a-mine where equipment selected for minimal capital investment can remove the parting and second seam nearly independent of the ongoing, present production. With proper consideration of design, this parting-coal removal is evaluated as a second operation within the first and has its own profitability measure. The Fort Union Area of Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas contains large reserves of low sulfur sub-bituminous coal. In many locations, several coal seams are close to the surface and are separated by relatively thin layers of parting. The removal of overburden and the mining of the upper seam is accomplished effectively with conventional mining methods and equipment. Mining a second seam of coal and handling the parting in accord with economic and environmental controls presents a number of problems. Typically, mining companies have adapted the conventional strip mining techniques used in the East. However, the extreme thickness of the western coal seams offers alternative mining method possibilities for parting and second seam removal.

Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.
