The Jewett mine is a surface mine in central Texas, producing about 8,000,000 tons/year of lignite. The mine covers 46,000 acres of land. Approximately 430 people are employed by Northwestern Resources Company and through their efforts, the Jewett Mine is one of the most productive mining operations in the country. The Jewett Mine utilizes a unique structure of staff to convert Operations Research into plans which can be implemented at the "front line" level of the Operations Team. This planning not only makes the mine cost effective and efficient, but promotes creativity in mining, which promotes ongoing research to lower the cost of mining.

The main objective of this study was to remove printing ink from waste newspaper and improve the de-inked paper brightness as close as the unprinted paper by bleaching agents. This paper summarizes results of laboratory investigation into the de-inkability of newsprint printed with offset printing. Different chemicals and process parameters were varied to assess the effect on the brightness and cleanliness. The operations involved in de-inking process are briefly described and some of the problems being encountered are discussed.

The question is posed as to why columns typically have a collection zone 10 m high (H) by 1 m in diameter (D). Three geometry dependent factors are considered: degree of mixing, Np; volumetric bias rate, B; and volumetric gas rate, G. Increasing H:D decreased Np and B, which improves performance but decreases G, which causes the column to approach overloading. Taking typical column operating conditions, it is concluded that a collection zone H:D of 10:l is a reasonable compromise.

Discrete event simulation modeling provides a tool to quantify the throughput capacity of stockyards. Interactions between the main equipment types (trains, dumpers, conveyors, stackers, reclaimers, shiploaders) can be captured, including route blockages, breakdowns, and planned maintenance. Simulation has been successfully used at world-class stockyard facilities to determine current capacity and to identify gains resulting from improvement projects. Recent projects have focused on iron-ore, coal, and soya facilities, but the technology is suitable to be used on any bulk material type.

Investigations have been conducted at Chino Mines Co. into the effect that SAG mill recycle material (critical size) exerts on SAG mill throughput and specific energy requirements. Tests were conducted on laboratory, pilot, and plant scales to evaluate the merits of alternative treatment options. Removing critical size material from the SAG mill circuit has been shown to improve new feed rates by 84% with a reduction in specific energy (kWh./t) of 88%. Test results obtained to date are presented.

Investors and other stakeholders are increasingly concerned about the quality and quantity of sustainability disclosures as well as the extent to which such disclosures correlate with sustainability practices of mining firms. This is because disclosure policies vary widely across firms in terms of extensiveness, materiality, and disclosed topic. In this paper, we conduct a preliminary examination of the relationship between sustainability performance and disclosure. We use sustainability performance indicators such as water and energy use and the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board’s (SASB’s) standards to evaluate disclosures. Our preliminary results show that some measures of sustainability performance (energy use) are negatively correlated to the amount and quality of disclosures while others (water use) are not. Thus, investors should not judge sustainability performance based solely on the amount and quality of sustainability disclosures. In addition, our results suggest that firm size and ownership as well as institutional membership could impact the strength of correlations between disclosure policy and sustainability performance

Belt network simulators developed in the last two decades are reviewed. Critical parameters in belt network design are identified, and the capabilities of belt simulators in providing values of these parameters are investigated. An alternative design model that optimizes values of the critical parameters is introduced. To illustrate the capabilities of the alternative model, a real life case is treated and the outcomes are discussed.

Numerous Colorado mountain tunnels that date to the late 1800s convey water to the farming and urban communities of the eastern Front Range. Repairs to these remote facilities, often located in public lands at altitudes of 11,000 feet or more, require detailed planning, close coordination with multiple agencies, and creative execution. Issues and solutions discussed include designing repairs in undocumented ground and support conditions, logistical challenges, work in a short summer construction window, stabilization of historically signicant structures, and proect delivery strategies. xamples that illustrate early contractor involvement, exibility in design, and construction solutions are presented.

Detailed stratigraphic studies of the overburden at North Carolina Phosphate Corporation new South Creek Mine have delineated several aquifers and acquicludes within the 30-meter-thick overburden section of late Pleistocene sands and clayey sands. A major aquifer occurs in the 10-meter-thick sequence of shelly sands of the early Pleistocene Croatan Formation. The water-charged Croatan sands thicken into a paleodrainage surface on top of the Pliocene Yorktown Formation, a major aquiclude. A three-phase dewatering program is projected: 1) improve surface drainage around mine perimeter to reduce both flowage into the pit and rainfall recharge; 2) use a wellpoint system to dewater the upper 8 meters; and 3) use recharge wells along the axis of the paleo- drainage to dewater the overburden below 8 meters.

Over a period of seven years (1989-1996) the Mineral Industry Research Laboratory (MIRL) University of Alaska Fairbanks, has investigated the effects of temperature, residence time, and particle size on the degree of low-rank coal (LRC) upgrading for a non-evaporative, hydrothermal drying process, also known as hot water drying (HWD). Three Alaskan LRCs were used in this study: Usibelli coal (Seam No.4) from the Nenana Coal Field, Little Tonzona coal from near McGrath, and Beluga coal from the Beluga-Yentna field on the west side of Cook Inlet. Replicated, factorial tests were conducted. Experimental results indicate that most of the low-rank coal upgrading via HWD occurs rapidly within the first 10-20 minutes of residence time. Thereafter, the upgrading process slows down and over 100 minutes of additional residence time are required to produce similar percentage increases in coal properties to those achieved in the first 10-20 minutes. The properties of the hot water dried products were very sensitive to process temperature. Calorific value, carbon and oxygen contents, equilibrium moisture levels and Hardgrove grindabilities all appear to change linearly with temperature within the 275" C to 325" C range.

Turquoise Ridge is an underground gold mine located in the Potosi Mining District, approximately 64 km northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada. Turquoise Ridge Underground is accessed via two shafts and a system of internal ramps and utilizes underhand drift and fill mining methods with cemented rockfill. The mine also employs mechanical mining as well as sill benching as mining methods. Ground conditions at Turquoise Ridge Underground are poor, and the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) may be less than 20, or very poor, in ore headings. Current production rate is 2,700 tonnes of ore per day. Key challenges in increasing production levels and reducing costs are the development of sufficient stoping areas and the transition from top-cut development to undercut stoping. Completion of the infrastructure development in the North Zone is necessary to achieve and optimize higher production levels. The #3 Shaft project is well underway and is expected to be commissioned in mid. 2022. The shaft will drastically decrease the haulage requirements in the North Zone

Success of The Carter Mining Company's safety program can be primarily attributed to "total immersion" of all operating and staff personnel in program design and implementation. Currently, the Company operates two surface coal mines in Campbell County, Wyoming. Total employment is about 440 and current annual production is about 15 million tons. The safety program has evolved from one which was administered primarily by staff personnel (the Safety Department) to one which requires active participation by line management and operating personnel. Lost time accident frequencies have declined from a high of 1.86 per 200K hours worked in 1978 to zero in 1982. Reportable accident frequencies have declined from slightly over 5 to slightly over 2 during the same period. Analysis of program results indicates that the most important achievement by the company has been to gain strong commitment to safe operation by all employees. It is important that program format and content be frequently changed and modified so that: 1) The requirement for safe job performance is communicated well and often, 2) The safe job performance message is trans- mitted in new and interesting ways, and 3) Operating personnel participate in design and implementation of the program.

The dissolution of mercury during gold cyanidation is the cause of many environmental, health and processing problems. A study was undertaken to find a suitable reagent for the removal of mercury bearing complexes from the leach liquor. Removal of mercury from synthetic solutions and process water from a gold mine was investigated using sodium sulfide, sodium and potassium dimethyl dithiocarbamates as precipitating reagents. The results have shown that efficient mercury removal could be achieved by addition of potassium dimethyl dithiocarbamate (KDTC), by formation of stable mercury compounds. The resultant mercury-potassium dimethyl dithiocarbamate precipitates are stable under present plant operating conditions and do not have any deleterious effect on gold adsorption by activated carbon. Furthermore, it is also possible to stabilize the mercury in the heap during cyanidation by adding dimethyl dithiocarbomate.

For many years underground mining in the Sydney Coalfield has suffered from the effects of high horizontal stresses. It is only in the last 15 years that they have come to be recognized, understood, predicted and even avoided. This paper relates experiences in three coal mines in three different seams in the Sydney Coalfield. The effect of the direction of the principal horizontal stress on the direction of drivage of gate roads, access roadways and longwalls is described. Results of a monitoring program to measure the change of magnitude and direction of the principal horizontal stress in the gate roads as a result of longwall mining are also presented as well as the effect of the direction of principal horizontal stress on the shape of sandstone/gas outburst cavities.

"The mining industry is a tough business. The obstacles faced in attempting to run a mine - much less build a new one - go beyond an orebody’s geology. There was a time when commodity prices dictated whether or not to build or expand a mine. Today, though, the challenges faced by miners include social responsibility, environmental regulations and a myriad of needed permits on several governmental levels that every miner knows will be challenged by opponents every step of the way. With all of those challenges, and others not mentioned here, it’s a wonder anyone would stay in the industry. But they do. In fact, more than 2,100 mining professionals from around the world gathered in Reno, NV last December for the American Exploration and Mining Association’s (AEMA) annual conference. That is an impressive number, considering that commodity prices remain in the doldrums, preventing companies from building many new mines and limiting expansions at existing ones. Even so, attending such a conference allows these mining industry pros to learn new and more efficient ways to operate their mines and plants through the dozens of technical presentations the conference offered. And mingling with their peers provided another avenue for learning. The AEMA conference also attracted many of the industry’s leading equipment and service providers (228 exhibitors in 246 booths). Technical presentationsThe AMEA meeting is known for its variety of high quality technical presentations and the 2014 conference was no exception. Some of the topics include new technologies in surface and underground mining, explorers and emerging producers, mine closure and remediation, regulations and reserves reporting, hydrology and new innovations in mining. "Nucleation and growth of copper on 316L stainless steel from synthetic acidified copper sulfate was studied in the absence and presence of chloride ions and/or organic additives (HydroStar® 4208, DXG®-F7, Cyquest® N-900) using a potentiostatic technique. The current-time data obtained at 0.16V vs. SHE was analyzed using nucleation and growth models. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images of deposits produced at 300 A m-2 show that the addition of 20 mg/L chloride ions increased the size and reduced the number of copper nuclei. Potentiostatic current-time data from the electrolyte without organic additives indicate progressive nucleation with two-dimensional (2-D) growth under diffusion control. SEM images obtained confirmed progressive nucleation with 2-D growth. 20 mg/L Cl- and 2.5 mg/L organic additives did not change the nucleation and growth mechanism, however the additives increased the number and reduced the size of copper nuclei leading to more uniform coverage of the stainless steel substrate.INTRODUCTION Electrowinning of copper is an important process in the manufacture of high purity copper metal. It is approximated that 20% of the world’s refined copper is produced from acidified copper sulfate solutions by electrowinning (Schlesinger, Sole, and Davenport, 2011). In many plants, copper is electrodeposited on AISI 316L stainless steel substrates for a period of 6-7 days, after which the copper is stripped from the blanks. Even though the deposition time for a commercial copper electrowinning circuit is around one week, it is critically important to control the nucleation, growth, and nature of the initial deposit (Sun and O'Keefe, 1992). Deposit morphology and structure are influenced by the real current density at the electrode surface. The real current density across the cathode surface is made uniform by proper design of the electrowinning cell and electrodes and careful operational practice. Even with good design and control, some current maldistribution occurs. The outcome of severe current maldistribution is poor deposits that affect product quality and/or increase energy consumption. To combat current maldistribution and create a larger operating window in terms of current density, temperature, and copper concentration, small amounts of organic smoothing agents (traditionally guar products) are added to copper electrowinning electrolytes. Moreover, these additives inhibit the growth of copper dendrites, which leads to improved deposit quality by producing bright, smooth, and dense cathodes."

"Horsehead Metal Products is a zinc refinery in Mooresboro NC treating crude Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade Zinc by a hydrometallurgical process, comprising leaching, zinc solvent extraction/electrowinning (SX/EW), melting and casting and bleed treatment. Cadmium removal by zinc dust cementation plays an essential role in the bleed treatment circuit to prevent a build-up of cadmium in the circuit. Silica, although not present at significant levels in the WOX feed material (approximately 0.3%), had a significant impact on the efficiency of cadmium cementation with zinc dust, most likely due to the passivation of zinc dust particles with silica gel. Solid/liquid separation efficiency by filter press was also impacted. The silica levels were mapped throughout the circuit in an attempt to identify the source of the silica issues. Adjustments including using PLS as feed to cementation, pH control in WOX leaching and neutralization have been introduced to mitigate the issues created by silica gel in the circuit. INTRODUCTION Located in North Carolina, Horsehead Metal Products Inc. is a hydrometallurgical zinc refinery processing Waelz Oxide (WOX) to produce Special High Grade (SHG) zinc. The flowsheet, known as the Modified Zincex® process, consists of leaching, solvent extraction, electrowinning, melting and casting and bleed treatment as illustrated in Figure 1. Cadmium cementation, part of the bleed treatment process, provides an essential bleed of cadmium from the circuit, as metallic cement. The Cadmium cementation circuit consists of agitated cementation reactors, a zinc dust addition system, filter presses, agitated purification (releach) reactors and a cadmium concentrate filter press Silica can be found in several forms in acid leaching. The first form is fine silicate particles. The size of the particles can vary from one to twenty microns (1). Fine silicate particles can lead to the formation of crud in solvent extraction circuits (2, 3). At Mooresboro, crud has been observed in Depletion, which is part of the solvent extraction circuit. Silica content in the solution in this section is high. The second form of silica is monosilicic acid Si(OH)4, which begins to polymerize almost immediately upon being leached into solution. Monosilicic acid polymerizes to silica gel or a silica precipitate dependent primarily on supersaturation (5). Factors that influence the rate of polymerization include temperature, sulfuric acid concentration / pH, hydrofluoric acid concentration, seeding, and dissolved salts concentration such as zinc and aluminum in the solution (4, 5, 6). In sulfate systems, silica solubility is reported in the range of 150 to 450 ppm of SiO2 (3, 5, 7)."

Grouting is mainly used to improve mechanical properties or decrease the permeability of rock mass around civil and mining projects. The purpose of this paper is to present the most effective factors on grout penetration depth in rock mass. Such factors are essential for reliable estimation of the grout penetration depth and the expense for cement take of any grouting project. In this paper, about 50 different types of the relations presented so far by various researchers to estimate the depth of penetration in fractured rock were studied. The effective factors are classified to rock mass properties, grout properties, and operational factors. Results show that firstly, the discontinuities aperture and Lugeon value are respectively the most investigated factors of rock mass properties influencing on penetration depth. Secondly, the yielding stress, viscosity, and density of grout are the most effective factors of grout properties. Finally, grouting pressure has an intense effect among other operational factors. Mine haul roads degrade rapidly due to extreme loads on sub-optimal construction materials. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) are suited to quantify large-area road-network conditions, such as surface roughness, defects, and grade to optimize remediation of poor conditions and reduce overall costs. Mine haul roads present unique challenges, such as material type and edge characteristics, to automatic road detection that often fail, requiring manual road input. This research proposes a new method for analysis using the road center determined by principal curve analysis of a haul truck’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) traces; analysis grids were created from this center line. A dense point cloud from UAV photogrammetry was generated, and multiple linear regression analysis was conducted on each individual grid. The root mean square error in each grid indicates the surface roughness, and the change of slope between grids indicates the road grade inconsistencies. This method was applied to 26 road sections, and the results were validated by images taken from the truck operator’s vantage point. Critical defects were identified including excessive pothole formation, corrugation, depressions retaining water, and narrowing of travel lane. The results demonstrate this is a valid method of road identification and quantification of road defects at a mine site.
