In the late 1980s and into the 1990s, the Mountain Pass Mine in California produced about 40 percent of the world?s rare earth elements. At the height of this production, the facility produced up to 54 L/s (850 gpm) of saltwater that was piped to offshore holding ponds where the water was evaporated. In 1998, following a series of waste water pipeline breaches, separations activities were suspended, reducing the Mountain Pass site to just the openpit mine and mill. The environmental concerns were addressed and the affected areas have since been remediated. However, in the years following the breaches, 97 percent of the world?s production of rare earth elements moved to China. By 2011, Molycorp, and the Mountain Pass Mine, had rebounded from the difficult times and were once again in a position to become a significant player in the rare earth industry.

This chapter discusses the necessary construction techniques for installing coal mine ventilation devices. Included in the discussion are the major air controlling devices called over- casts, regulators, stoppings, and doors. Under-casts, although a valid device, are used infrequently in coal mining and are not discussed here. Typically, coal mines require a great many ventilation devices to control the air movement. Post-I969 mines have had to design their air systems to comply with the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act (CMHSA) as discussed in Chap. 1. Pre- 1969 mines have had to redesign major portions of their systems to comply with the basic components of the law such as separation of air courses, single unit split ventilation, and minimum air quantities. It is not uncommon, therefore, to find a large mine (2.0 Mt/a) requiring several hundred overcast installations (permanent, as well as repeat construction), plus doors and regulators placed among a thousand or more stoppings. When each of these devices is subject to leakage from installation and weathering defects, the importance of effective construction becomes evident. An historic rule of thumb for average mine ventilation says that about 70% of all the air pressure generated by the mine fan is lost between the portal and the working faces. Of course, this rule is subject to many factors, but the message is clear: there is a tremendous inefficiency in controlling leakage through common air devices. This chapter strives to present a standard approach and design alternatives which can go a long way in reducing this leakage, and hence, ventilation costs. Historically, mine ventilation has progressed from natural, or draft ventilation, to fire-induced ventilation (Fig. l), furnace-fired centrifugal fans and finally, to today's modem mine fans. Underground controlling devices have been in use in the coal mines since the late 1600s, but the CMHSA of 1969 was the real turning point for mine ventilation. Minimum quantities and velocities of fresh air were required for mining, forcing coal operators and engineers to reevaluate and improve their systems. As a consequence, the cost for ventilating air increased. Today, companies face a variety of choices among design alternatives, materials, labor, and costs of ventilating devices for their mines. The best approach for any individual company or mine is determined by (1) the needs of the mine, and (2) the local design parameters. In my discussions of ventilation construction I shall be fairly general in terms of device installation steps, where specifics are warranted for clarification, I will include this information.

Weir Minerals ? Linatex has developed a new approach to the dewatering of fine solids, particularly mine and process plant tailings and wastes. The Weir process, patented in 2009, uses standard process equipment in a standard flow sheet, but applies this approach to materials previously thought to be too fine to be dewatered with this type of equipment. The process can be applied to a wide range of materials, making lower moisture products that can be re-used elsewhere or sent to disposal. It has already been tested successfully on a small scale in Australia on coal fines, zinc mine tailings, red mud, iron ore tails, and copper/gold tailings. The principal factors affecting the solids recovery have been established as: 1. The % solids in the slurry feed to the process ? a higher % solids provides a higher recovery. 2. The particle size of the feed solids ? coarser feeds provide higher recoveries. The key factors affecting the % solids in the dewatered product have been determined to be: 1. The particle size of the dewatered product - coarser materials produce a higher % solids in the dewatered product. 2. The height of the discharge weir on the dewatering screen - a higher discharge weir on the dewatering screen also yields a higher % solids. 3. The angle of the dewatering screen. Setting the screen horizontal increases the travel rate, reduces the bed depth and reduces the % solids in the dewatered product. Back-sloping the screen up to 5° reduces the travel rate and increases the % solids in product. Eight plants ranging in size from 3 t/h to 40 t/h have been sold to a range of customers in China, for coal and iron ore tailings treatment. Australia has one plant, a small unit rated at 30 t/h of sand fines, and has recently completed test work on iron ore tailings for a dewatering plant rated at 135 t/h. Additional tests are under way with clients around Australia, to demonstrate the capabilities of this process on specific applications and to provide confirmation that materials can be processed successfully, before moving on to larger scale tests or full size plants. The advantages of the Weir process include - lower moisture in products, uses proven equipment, lower capital and operating costs, lower maintenance costs, reduced power consumption, compact footprint, can be used in parallel or in series with existing equipment, modular design to facilitate redundancy or expansion, efficient water recovery and simpler water management, reduced cement in backfill mixes, smaller tailings disposal footprint, reduced earthworks requirements, much lower seepage losses, more stable tailings mass, progressive site rehabilitation, reduced impact on local wildlife, reduced risk of dam wall failure, and reduced environmental monitoring and compliance costs.

In 2009, the estimated real GDP of the United States decreased by 2.4 percent compared with, and the estimated nominal GDP was about $14.2 trillion (Table 1). Trends in various sectors of the domestic economy are often reflected in mineral production and consumption rates. In 2009, the continued decline of the housing market was reflected in reductions in the production and consumption of cement, clays, construction sand and gravel, and crushed stone (those mineral commodities that are used almost exclusively in construction). Production of mineral commodities associated with the manufacture of goods for the housing market, such as ceramic tile, heating and air conditioning equipment, paint, plumbing and sanitaryware, roofing, wiring and wallboard also decreased. ArcelorMittal, headquartered in Luxembourg, is one of the world’s largest steel and mining companies. It supplies steel to industries such as automotive, construction, and energy, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and innovation. The company employs about 125,000 people and, in 2024, produced 42.4 million tons of iron ore and 57.9 million tons of crude steel across 15 countries. Its mining operations span Canada, the United States, Mexico, Brazil, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kazakhstan, and Liberia, focusing on iron ore and coal extraction to support steel production. This study examines Peña Colorada, one of Mexico’s largest iron ore mines (a joint venture by ArcelorMittal and Ternium). Facing declining ore grades, Peña Colorada adopted Hexagon solutions to uncover and capture project value. A comparison of two Life of Mine (LOM) plans from 2012 and 2016 (before and after implementing Hexagon solutions) shows that between 2019 and 2023, Peña Colorada reduced actual waste by 26% (compared to 2012 LOM) and 19% (compared to 2016 LOM). LOM Plans are generated yearly, and each time, opportunities for reducing mining waste were identified, evaluated and implemented. The key driver was schedule optimization using Hexagon MinePlan Schedule Optimizer (MPSO). This reduction means less waste transported to disposal sites, resulting in fewer hauling equipment operating hours, lower fuel consumption, and reduced carbon emissions.

Mining has historically been one of the most male-dominated industries in the world. From underground operations to executive boardrooms, the presence of women has often been slim. Women had often been excluded from operational, leadership and decision-making roles, both by cultural norms and systemic barriers. According to PwC’s Global Mine Report (2023), women represent around 14 percent of the global mining workforce. Leadership representation, however, remains sparse, with S&P Global’s 2023 report showing women holding approximately 12 percent of C-suite positions and only 3 percent of senior leadership roles globally. These figures reflect persistent gaps, but they also highlight the progress driven by a new generation of women transforming the industry. Despite the gender imbalance among mining workers, women have continuously made grand strides within the industry, resulting in pivotal changes. At the forefront of this transformation is Kimberly Morrison, one of several women who have played pivotal roles in shaping the mining sector.

INTRODUCTION For overland conveyors of several kilometres length and as well as wide for conveyors designed for high mass flows, the cost for the conveyor belting share is 40% to 50% of the invested cost 173. The German Standard DIN 22101 is used for calculation and dimensioning of - conveyor belts and belt conveyor components. Developments in rubber technology and conveyor belt design required a revision of the standard released in 1982 121, which was published in August 2001 131. New research results and publications 16-9, 13-15] led to a better understanding of the material behaviour and their influences on conveyor belts. Test and calculation methods have been established to determine the most important parameters which are related to the performance of a conveyor belt line. These parameters are • The running resistance of the idlers • The indentation resistance of the belt • The dynamic splice efficiency • The distribution of belt load in the splices, transition zones and on pulleys. As a result, new rubber compounds with low indentation losses allow the use of reduced friction coefficients and thus lead to reduced power consumption, smaller drives and lower belt tensions. The deeper understanding of the flux of forces within belt splices led to both optimised splice design and optimised rubber compounds which significantly improve the dynamic splice efficiency. Therefore, in accordance with the standard, the benefits of these technologies and the better understanding of material behaviour allow a reduction of belt strength still maintaining sufficient safety factors. Thus engineers are enabled to calculate belt tensions more exactly and users are encouraged to pay more attention to starting and braking techniques. DETERMINATION OF DRIVE FORCE According to the DIN standards the resistance to motion generally has to be determined for each different section of the belt conveyor including upper and lower run separately. The necessary drive power P is calculated as [ ] with v as the conveying speed. The total of all resistances to motion of carry and return run can be determined as [ ] FHo and FHu are the primary resistances consisting of the running resistances of the idlers, the indentation resistance of the belt, the fulling of the conveyed material and the flexure of the belt. While indentation resistance and idler resistance are measurable, they have been deter- mined to be responsible for up to 70% of the primary resistances covered by FH. Further FN is the secondary resistance that covers, for example, the resistance of feeding points and scrapers. Fa are the total slope resistances and Fs is the total of all special resistances, resulting, for example, from belt steering devices. These three resistances should be neglected in the following discussion. For conveyors where a determination of the substantial parts of the resistances to motion is not possible, according to the new DIN standard [31 a determination of the drive power is acceptable by using the fictitious friction factor) [ ] In this formula the index i identifies the individual section of the conveyor, 1 is the length of the section and MR, MG and ML are the related masses of the idlers, the belt and the load in kg/m. INTRODUCTION Thermal dryers have been utilized for reducing moisture of bituminous coal since the late 1930's. Since that time, numerous changes in the coal industry have motivated advances in thermal drying technology. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the changes that occurred to dryer design and focus on current practices of fine coal drying. The major topics discussed in this paper are: - Early Thermal Dryer Design and Evolution - Current Drying System Design and Associated Components - Current Economics of Fine Coal Thermal Drying - Future Markets and Design Considerations EARLY THERMAL DRYER DESIGN AND EVOLUTION Background The practice of drying fine coal with heated air has been performed for more than one half century. Throughout that period, both Metallurgical and Steam coal producers have used this method for reducing the surf ace moisture content of their fine plant products. During the late 1930's and early 19401s, vibrating bed and flash dryers were used to per- form the drying duties. Closed water circuits and vacuum filtration had not yet been integrated into process circuitry and centrifugal dryers were in their early stages of development. During that same period, changes in mining practices were reshaping the distribution of coal to our processing facilities. Plants originally designed for the purpose of processing coarser fractions of coal were being burdened with additional quantities of fine coal. Those plants, unable to recover fine coal, would reject these solids to plant bleed. The higher incidences of stream pollution that resulted from these events prompted clean stream legislation and the need for new, more efficient fine coal recovery circuits. The coal processing industry responded to these needs by integrating closed water circuits and filtration into circuits. The fine coal filter cakes recovered exhibited poor handling characteristics by themselves and often required further dewatering to improve their characteristics. Flash dryers at that time were being used to dry the coarser products. For those facilities operating flash dryers, the solution to this new problem appeared to be simple. The filter cake was combined with the coarser (-1/4") coal and then introduced to the flash drying column for drying. The filter cakes, however, presented significant problems for the flash drying systems. Heavy lumps of filter cake could not be dispersed and conveyed by the rising hot air and as a result would settle out in the bottom of the column. This material, known as "drop-out", would then accumulate and require further handling. The solution to this problem was not an easy one. Sophisticated mixing equipment was employed to condition the feed to the dryers. As attempts to minimize drop-out with this approach failed, the only recourse was to collect the material with conveying systems and recycle it back to the plant or dispose of it. The additional costs of handling this material reduced the attractiveness of the flash systems and opened the door for the development of a new, more cost effective coal drying system. Due to the nature of the problems experienced by the flash systems, fluid bed systems were considered. Fluid bed dryers were being used in other industries at that time but had no operating history in the coal industry. Dorr-Oliver transferred technology from other industries and built the first fluid bed drying system for fine coal.

The velocity of detonation (VOD) is a significant property considered when rating an explosive, and it is quantified as a confined or unconfined velocity. The confined velocity is more significant as explosives are usually used under a definite degree of confinement. This study evaluates the stepwise increment of the air-deck volume from 10 to 30 percent, and its effect on the VOD. The VOD estimation in the 172-mm-diameter explosive column was conducted using the Dáutriche technique. The air-deck volume increment has an attenuation effect on the steady-state VOD, and detonation failure is high at 30 percent air-deck volume. This attenuation effect is directly linked to the explosive’s rating and efficacy. The air-decking approach in this study is different from conventional air-decking techniques in that it does not employ the fixed blasthole parameters, air-deck volume and specific VOD. 

Recent expansion programs have made the Yunkang underground coal mine the number one producer in Shenxi Province. The mine is the newest in the Datong Coal Administration, currently rated at around 3 Mt/a of coal. Located in the Wa Chushi mountain range about 23 km north of the city of Datong, the mine has undergone a series of expansion phases since startup in 1973. Initial design capacity was 1.5 Mt/a and ultimately, production will be brought to an estimated 7.0 Mt/a by 1985, according to mine superintendent Li Jia-zhi. How Coal Occurs The coal, Jurassic in age, occurs in three economically identifiable seams designated No. 2, 3, and 7. Seams are 100-250 m below the surface. Reserves from this economic zone were not quantified, but Superintendent Li indicated that there was enough mapped out to sustain the expanded production rate for over 20 years. Below the Jurassic coal is another possible economic zone, a Permocarboniferous coal lying 400-600 m below the surface. Little development drilling has been conducted to ascertain its potential. The Jurassic beds are relatively flat and coal quality is reportedly one of the best in China. Heat content of the coal runs around 33.5 MJ/kg and the ash content is less than 10%. In some areas, it is less than 7%. Coal preparation is simple and involves a washing and screening separation into four principal size fractions. Washed coal is stored in one of six storage silos, each with 4000-t capacity. Mining the No. 2 Seam Since startup, primary production has been derived from the No. 2 seam. The coal is relatively hard and is topped by a hard cement-like conglomerate. These factors, coupled with an average thickness between 4 to 6 m, precluded the use of conventional longwall techniques, according to mine engineers. This study simulates the impact of a shale gas well casing breach near a longwall mine. Field studies are conducted to measure mining-induced permeability changes over the abutment pillar of a longwall mine, and a geomechanical model is developed in 3DEC, a three-dimensional numerical modeling code, to predict the aperture of fractures in the overburden at the study site. The predicted aperture values are used to determine mining-induced permeabilities, and the results are compared with the field measurements. These aperture values are provided as inputs into fracture flow code (FFC), which generates a stochastic discrete fracture network (DFN) model for the study site and predicts the potential shale gas flow to the mine. Results from 100 DFN realizations are statistically analyzed using the bootstrapping method to compensate for notable variation in fracture geometry. The results show a significant difference between the gas inflow for nearby panels due to increase in the induced permeability during mining of the second panel. The average gas flow to the mine was calculated as 4.72 × 10 m3/s (49 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the first panel mining, 8.97 × 10 m3/s (19 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the first panel mining, 2.16 × 10 m3/s (458 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Sewickley horizon during the second panel mining, and 8.07 × 10 m3/s (171 cfm) for a hypothetical breach at the Uniontown horizon during the second panel mining. Depending on the mine ventilation system, this could result in methane concentrations exceeding regulatory limits. Hence, these findings provide insights into the potential risk of an unconventional gas well casing breach near a longwall mine under shallow cover.

Mining haul trucks comprise the majority of the equipment used in underground limestone mining operations and are known to emit high levels of noise. A previous study conducted by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicates that 70-90 percent of all miners have a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) great enough to be classified as a hearing disability by retirement age. These results demonstrate the public health need to protect the hearing of workers in the mining industry, including haul truck drivers. ng of workers in the mining industry, including haul truck drivers. Cab enclosures present an opportunity to isolate the haul truck operator from both truck and other noise in the mining environment. A total of twenty-five haul truck cabs were studied which were divided into three style (treatment) categories determined by soundproofing features and technology for noise reduction: old-, new-, and retrofitted-style. This study examines the contribution of cab acoustics, operator performance, and maintenance to noise reduction for each cab style. Dosimeters were used to measure 8-hr time weighted average sound pressure levels (TWA8 SPLs) inside and outside the cabs to determine if different acoustical treatments affect cab attenuation. Adherence to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) Permissible Exposure Limit (PEL) of 90 dB TWA8 (with a 90 dB threshold) was used as the main indicator of overall noise reduction achieved. Dosimetery results indicate only 2% of the samples exceeded the PEL, but samples could still be reduced much further. Descriptive and comparative statistics indicate that noise levels inside the new-style cabs are significantly lower than the other two cab styles. Also, data suggest that there is no difference in noise exposures when comparing the old-style to retrofitted cab styles. Operator influence (opening doors and windows) was a significant factor for increasing noise exposure. This paper demonstrates that properly designed cabs can achieve major noise reductions, but noise levels could still be reduced much further below the MSHA PEL. New-style cabs, equipped with modern noise-reduction treatments, exhibit much lower noise exposures than the other two cabs styles, and the effectiveness of the current noise-reduction treatments for retrofitted cabs is questionable. Haul truck driver observations indicate that improved noise exposure reduction training is needed. Finally, specific targets for future noise reduction research are suggested that will further contribute to the prevention of hearing loss for haul truck operators.

The objective of this study was to assess the health and environmental impacts of fluidized-bed combustion (FBC) of coal, specifically as applied to baseload generation of electrical energy by utilities. The study* was a short-term effort that based its analyses on information derived from the experience of the group or quickly obtained from the literature. The approach was to compare Atmospheric Fluidized-Bed Combustion (AFBC) and Pressurized Fluidized-Bed Combustion (PFBC) with two current technologies: low-sulfur coal combustion (LSC) and flue gas desulfurization (FGD) used with high-sulfur coals. A wet-limestone process was selected as the FGD technology. The impacts compared involved not only health and environment but also sociology, resource use, and dollar cost. Conditions for comparison were centered around a nominal date of 1988, when initial operation of commercial AFBC plants may occur. The PFBC has a later introductory date, a nominal 1995 (its impacts relative to other competitive technologies now in the R&D stages were not compared.)

Since man began beneficiating ores, a limited number of factors influenced the type of treatment. The ore itself has always been a factor. The first form of concentration was probably hand sorting, and the grade of concentrate and recovery had to be considered from the start. The cost of labor as a factor in mill design did not attain importance until the period following World War I. Power was one of the cheapest commodities available, and consequently power consumption was ignored. That no longer holds true. The present work does nothing to simplify the work of the metallurgist, or designer. On the contrary it adds another element to the design considerations. And while this report concentrates on power consumption, the mill designer must take the other factors into account as well. This study is based on a compilation of data supplied by a number of Western United States copper operations, as well as information from equipment manufacturers. Although its conclusiones apply to other minerals and geographic areas, the information is more precise, when applied to similar ores. The discussion has been divided into sections covering crushing, grinding, and flotation as these are the principal power consuming functions.

Uranium tailings at Cotter Corporation's Canon City, Colorado Mill were moved to a double-lined impoundment, but uranium and molybdenum salts remaining in the fractured bedrock underlying the old tailings ponds seeped into groundwater. Fluor Daniel GTI recommended an in situ geochemical fixation remedy, flushing Best Sulfur Products' calcium polysulfide reductant into the subsurface with clean water. Residual metals became immobile, trapped in the bedrock. Fluor Daniel GTI designed and implemented the process on ten acres with high metal concentrations. Cotter is operating and monitoring the system, which can be expanded to "hot spots." The original remediation time was estimated at less than five years.

Mine operators, conveyor system designers, consultants, and manufacturers have had opportunities over the past decade to utilize various actively controlled technologies to drive complex underground conveyor systems. These technologies included several electrical drive solutions, mechanical drive solutions, and hydromechanical (fluid coupling) drive solutions. All of these technologies have their inherent advantages and disadvantages, and only after several years of operation can mine operators fairly evaluate the overall benefits (short term performance and cost vs. longer term operational and maintenance costs) of any particular drive. Far too often in today's world, decisions for new equipment are made with inadequate regard to issues concerning serviceability and maintainability. Many of the newer electrical technologies (primarily AC variable speed drives) which have been used in recent years were selected based on the perceived desirable benefit from variable speed operation. This technology, however, which differs sign8cantly between various manufacturers, is in a constant state of evolution which puts into question the manufacturers' ability for long-term product support. In addition, various forms of this technology have also generated some undesirable operational issues, including reduced motor life, harmonics for the power system, and mine communications problems. This technology is also extremely current-limited, which results in problems handling overload conditions, a frequent occurrence often resulting from a decline in the coal recovery rate (conveying more rock than coal). The fluid coupling, however, is based on a technology which has been used successfully in underground conveyor applications for decades. Although the base hydrodynamic technology is well proven and has inherently beneficial characteristics on conveyor applications, Voith has continuously improved on this technology to meet the increasing demands of today's challenging conveyor haulage systems. Recognizing a need in the market for a reliable, actively controlled drive system, Voith Turbo began development in 1996 of a new, actively controlled coupling which was targeted specifically for the higher powered, complex underground conveyors. Voith introduced the new TPKL Fill Controlled coupling product to the market in 1997, and the first two applications for this new technology were on multiple drive mpper booster applications on longwall panel conveyors. The Tower Mill has proven to be a grinding machine with a demonstrated application flexibility. Variations in applications have proven to be numerous. This mill was originally intended for fine grinding applications. Subsequent testwork and installations have demonstrated the mill can be utilized in place of ball mills as secondary mills. The following lists a few of the circuits tested: 1. Tower Mill secondary receiving feed from a primary SAG mill grinding stage. 2. Tower Mill as tertiary grind unit following a rod mill/ball mill. 3. Tower Mill as secondary grind unit following a primary ball mill. 4. Tower Mill as a limeslaker. 5. Tower Mill grinding as a primary unit taking limestone crusher discharge. Applications demonstrate the mill is energy efficient and is sensitive to the following consideration: 1. Circuit chosen. 2. Top size of feed. 3. Product size required. 4. Classification equipment performance. 5. Media size required. 6. Media type required.

The effects of the operating parameters of media filling ratio, solid mass fraction, grinding media size and grinding time on the stirred media milling of talc were studied. The findings were assessed based on the product particle size (d50, d10), surface area (Sw) and energy consumption (Em). Furthermore, after determining the optimum grinding conditions, Box-Behnken statistical design was used to determine the effect of parameter interactions on the d50 size. The media filling ratio significantly affects d50 size decrease compared with solid mass fraction and grinding time. The minimum d50 size was also achieved under optimum grinding conditions.
