"Yielding support systems for application in underground construction have a long history, primarily in mining. Typical examples are tunnels subject to loading conditions that lead to overstressing of the newly installed support or existing tunnel structures in active fault zones. Recent applications for tunnel rehabilitation projects unveiled the capabilities and flexibility of combined yielding support systems presented in this paper. Frequently, the main requirements for tunnel rehabilitation applications are a fast, safe, and simple installation along with the need for flexibility with regards to existing tunnel geometries. A combined support system consisting of steel sets with yielding connections and special groutable hoses has proven to be an efficient support measure providing a multitude of advantages compared to conventional rehabilitation approaches. The presented yielding support system provides an immediate and active support, while it allows for controlled yielding upon experiencing loads beyond its support capacity. INTRODUCTION The excavation of underground spaces leads to redistribution in the existing stress regime. This load redistribution goes along with deformations in the surrounding rock mass. Magnitude and duration of these deformations depend on the tunnel’s depth and geological conditions, but also on the installed support system. Modern civil tunneling infrastructure has generally an envisioned service life of about 120 years. Conventional tunneling provides typically a dual support system, split into the initial (or primary) and final (or secondary) lining. A typical design principle in civil tunneling is to let the vast majority of deformations acting on the initial lining cease, before the final lining is installed. Based on this approach, the loading on the final lining is significantly reduced and signs of overstressing, such as cracking of the lining, are typically limited to the initial lining. However, special cases in swelling and squeezing ground require different approaches, including yielding support systems."

Storing natural gas in solution mined salt cavities appears to be one of the more promising methods being considered by some major gas transmission companies for meeting peak demands. Historically, these companies have been faced with the problem of meeting peak demands when the source of natural gas is located hundreds of miles from the marketing area. Transcontinental Gas Pipe Line Corporation's position was further complicated because some of its offshore Gulf Coast gas supply wells may have to be shut in during hurricane alerts. Transco's solution was to construct. solution mined salt storage caverns adjacent to its pipeline near Eminence, Mississippi. (See Figure 1.) In 1965, Fenix & Scisson, Inc., was engaged by Transco to evaluate the feasibility of storing natural gas in caverns dissolved from salt at selected locations along Transco's pipeline to the East Coast. In June of that year a report was submitted to Transco concluding that this proposal was feasible and recommending several potential sites for storage development. Additional engineering and geological studies followed and in March 1968 the Eminence Salt Dome site was selected and storage construction began that year.

The second underground coal gasification experiment conducted by ERDA's Laramie Energy Research Center at a site near Hanna, Wyoming, was completed on July 30, 1976. During the experiment production reached 0.32 Mm 3/d (12 Mft3/d) of 6.9 MJ/m3 gas (175 Btu/ft 3 ). Approximately 6100 tonne (6700 ton) of coal were gasified during the experiment. Energy return ratios of 4.5 to 5.3, cold gas - thermal efficiencies of 76 to 89 percent, and overall process efficiencies of 65 to 74 percent were achieved during the second Hanna experiment. This paper describes the experiment and the results obtained with emphasis given to the determination of the energy recovered relative to energy consumed in conducting the test. Data from this determination are compared with previously published data from the first test conducted at Hanna during 1973-1974.

One often sees in the papers, in these days of ecological consciousness, estimates of the quantity of land that has been "devasted," "ruined," or "destroyed," by surface or strip mining, especially for coal. One feels sure that coal miners must have been the first to discover the art of excavation and that the public didn't know of its existance until five or 10 years ago! Estimates of the acreage vary widely with most of them sounding somewhat unreal. One estimate of 175,000 acres in Alabama appeared in one newspaper article and the implication was that all of this was mining for coal. The question was raised anew last summer when the author began working on a land use estimate utilizing aerial photographs, a preliminary project to the Alabama Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) contract presently being fulfilled. One land use category was barren or waste land and aside from some sand beaches in the two coastal counties in Alabama, recently strip mined land constituted most of that category. It quickly became apparent that old stripping was very hard to detect so that estimates from aerial photographs are not accurate. With regard to relatively new stripping, a thin veneer of reflective dirt washed over the countryside may result in a considerable overestimate of the excavated area. Actually, there is a way to estimate the area excavated by strip mining using published Bureau of Mines figures. At least three sets of data are needed: (1) Coal production figures, (2) average thickness of coalbeds mined, and (3) an accurate recovery figure.

With copper at its host depressed price in several years, producers are looking at every opportunity to cut costs in order to continue operating. Some of the measures that have been applied by different companies include reduction in manpower, high grading, and in some cases partial shutdowns. The most beneficial cost cutting measure implemented by Southern Peru Copper Corporation was to steepen the slope of the final pit limit from a conservative 37 degrees to an average of 48 degrees. By doing so, substantial cash outlays were saved. Southern Peru Copper Corporation (SPCC) operates two open pit copper mines and concentrators in the southern part of Peru, about 150 kilometers from the Chilean bordar. The Toquepala Mine went into production in 1960 and the Cuajone Mine in 1976. Both mines use shovel, truck and train operations. The trains, which haul ore to the crusher or waste to the dumps, are loaded either directly by shovels or by a transfer system. The Toquepala Concentrator treats an average of 43,000 tons per day and the Cuajone Concentrator an average of 55,000 tons per day. Concentrates are shipped via a 200 kilometer railroad to the port city of Ilo where the SPCC smelter is located. The annual production in the smelter from both mines is 290,000 tons of blister copper.

With increased stripping ratios and with dwindling ore content, the mining fraternity is increasingly turning to larger and larger equipment for profitable open pit operations. The availability of higher horsepower prime movers and increased capacity electric transmissions using either wheel mounted or axle mounted traction motors makes a reality of single axle, rear dump trucks having 150 to 250 ton capacity. The size of electric loading shovels is inherently geared to the size of haulage equipment. To work effectively with this new generation of trucks, the Harnischfeger Corporation has introduced its P&H Model 2800 with a capacity of 20 to 25 cubic yards and a working weight of nearly 1,500,000 pounds. The Model 2800, depicted in Figure 1 loading a 200 ton truck, has many new electric and mechanical features designed to give excellent production and low cost operation. Chief among the new features is the ELECTRO TORQUE* control system. ELECTROTORQUE is a completely static, solid state electronic system supplying controlled power both to the armature and to the fields of the d.c. shovel drive motors. It eliminates many major electrical rotating machines and their attendant maintenance. The system was developed jointly by ASEA of Sweden and Harnischfeger Corporation.

Timber support of mine openings continues to be an effective system for ground support, due to its avail¬ability, flexibility, and ease of installation. Timber support of mine openings as a primary method to support loose rock has been replaced to a large extent by rockbolting and by filling systems. How¬ever, the many designs of square-set timber and varia¬tions of crib and stull support that have been developed to suit many stope configurations have proven reliable over many years of application. Integrated in modern excavation and stoping methods, timber remains an im¬portant ground support material for today's mines. ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF TIMBER SYSTEMS Timber, when used as a part of the total support system, is recognized for its unique support properties. More than a cover to prevent minor falls of ground, timber systems have been carefully designed to provide adequate support with sufficient compressive qualities to achieve a safe working environment in extremely diffi¬cult ground conditions. In some cases, a timber support method is designed to yield while retaining its protec¬tive support qualities. Little or no initial investment in equipment or plant is required for incorporating timber into the mining support system. Low cost cutoff saws and portable chain saws are sufficient equipment for effective use of dimen¬sioned (sawed) or round (stull) timber support. Until recently, small sawmills of various complexity were com¬mon at mine surface plants. Sawmills at the mine sites have generally been replaced by timber vendors' mills. Suppliers have been able to use efficient cutting and lumber handling methods to reduce the cost of mine timbers. Most suppliers will package dimensioned mine timber into bundles that are suitable for handling down mine shafts and on level conveyances. The principal disadvantage of timber as a support method is higher material cost and labor cost associated with its labor-intensive installation. Furthermore, stand¬ing timber reserves of mine quality wood are in short supply in some areas, and heavy competition exists for alternative uses of the timber supplies. Vendors are reluctant to supply large cross section dimension tim¬bers relatively free of defects. Some mine operations require 4.8-m (16-ft) lengths of firm timber over 0.09 m2 (144 sq in.) in section and these are difficult to obtain in large quantities. APPLICATION OF TIMBER FOR MINE SUPPORTS Timber used in mine support has been cut from many species of trees. A firm hardwood with physical properties similar to western Douglas fir has been pre¬ferred in the US. Other harder and softer woods, how¬ever, have been used when readily available or where the specific strength or crushing quality of the wood is a desired specification of the support system design. Hard¬ wood, commonly oak, has been used where maximum crushing resistance is required. Mahogany and fir are widely used for shaft guide timber. Normally, timber is used with its core axis parallel to the long axis of the timber dimension. However, in some cases, it is placed normal to its core in a "butt" log position, so as to provide maximum resistance to abrasion of the ore passage adjacent to the cut end of the block. By selective placement of timber block¬ing, controlled resistance to ground closure can be achieved which will prevent early failure of primary sup¬port members of the timber structure. Timber is widely used in modern mining operations as a construction member for chute-lip support. These designs are tailored to each operation to conform to the dimensions of the haulage equipment being used. As a construction material, wood requires none of the spe¬cial equipment necessary for placement of concrete or steel support. Placement of these alternate support ma¬terials requires carefully dimensioned and engineered excavation for their installation. Wood can be easily sawed to fit on location. The successful use of timber in heavy ground de¬pends on the careful and accurate placement of block¬ing and bracing to achieve the controlled yielding re¬sistance needed to support the mine opening. Similarly, frequency, size, and placement of top and bottom block¬ing stulls in flat-bedded deposits are carefully determined to provide adequate support at the mining face. Con¬trolled caving through failure of the stulls may be required as the scope retreats from the earlier mined-out sections. The support program must achieve both of these dimensionless qualities by specification of stull frequency and size. The utility of the square set-system of ground sup¬port and timber support is described in Chap. 2, re¬printed from US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6691. Four examples of effective use of timber for support of stoping and other mine openings are pre¬sented in other chapters in this section. The Gilman mine's use of Mitchell slice stoping described in Chap. 3 is an early modification of the square-set mining system. This application proved reli¬able for heavy ground and overcame some of the dis¬advantages of conventional square-set timber. Chap. 4 describes the Burgin mine's use of timber with other reinforcement material. This combination of materials achieved high strength and control with yielding com¬ponent members necessary for heavy, squeezing ground. Chap. 5 describes the Bunker Hill mine's use of square¬set timber in a new configuration that provides an effi¬cient and safe support for stoping using small load¬haul-dump (LHD) mobile equipment. To increase zinc recovery in the concentrate, this investigation performed mineralogical characterization, dispersion studies, bench and pilot-scale flotation experiments and an industrial flotation trial. The objective was to verify the flotation behavior of the silicate zinc ore (calamine type) in the presence of slimes, with the aid of dispersing agents. Characterization studies identified the major minerals in the flotation feed as hemimorphite (calamine), quartz and dolomite. Dispersion tests showed that enhanced dispersion of the particles in the pulp in the absence of reagents occured at a pH range between 8.5 and 12.0. Bench-scale flotation experiments were planned using the statistical tool of complete factorial design at two levels, replicated once. These experiments showed, and were confirmed at the pilot-plant scale, that higher doses of sodium sulfide and polymeric dispersant combined with sodium silicate favored a higher metallurgical recovery. At 6,800 g/t (218 oz/st) sodium sulfide and 6,992 g/t (224 oz/st) polymeric dispersing agent combined with sodium silicate, a zinc grade of 38.4% in the final concentrate was achieved, at an average metallurgical recovery of 72.4%. The industrial trial confirmed the pilot scale results, leading to zinc recovery of 76.1% and a 37.3% zinc grade in the concentrate. To evaluate the effects on groundwater of a proposed in-pit disposal operation at an east Texas lignite mine, the local geologic, hydrogeologic, and geochemical features were thoroughly characterized. Resultant data were used in a flow and transport model (SWIFT) to simulate migration of the ash leachate. Computer simulations indicate that the leachate plume will travel 61-152 meters from the disposal area in 100 years after resaturation of the spoils. A 61-meter buffer zone of mine spoils without ash will surround the disposal area. The proposed landfill operation received regulatory approval and is currently operating as a Class 2 non-hazardous landfill.

Hydro-Jex® is a new enhanced method for heap leach treatment with significantly higher mineral recovery. In this case study at the Los Filos Mine in Mexico, the Hydro-Jex operation is evaluated for heap leach stability. This is pursued by numerical modeling of the heap leach pad stability and well monitoring of the phreatic surface before and after the Hydro-Jex operation. Experimental and numerical results both indicate an improvement in mineral processing under the influence of Hydro-Jex. Numerical results show an insignificant decrease and a significant increase in stability during and after Hydro-Jex injection application, respectively. The integrity of the liner is maintained in both cases. The zonal injection pressure, operationally below the overburden pressure, is found to be negligible compared with the dimensionality of the heap, and stability of the structure is not exposed to any significant risk, even up to 25%above overburden pressure. Furthermore, heap leach factor of safety increases after Hydro-Jex application. This is attributed to breakdown of the water solution build-up and thus a decrease in the phreatic surface depth below the top of the pad. It is suggested that injection wells be drilled, based on thorough geophysical data, in locations where overcompaction of heap material results in water solution build-up and pore pressure enhancement. Compared with traditional heap leaching, the Hydro-Jex technique not only expedites mineral processing by increasing chemical kinetics extraction but also increases the stability of the heap by unclogging drains.

This study summarizes the ventilation requirements for a highly mechanized P.T.Freeport Indonesia's underground mine operation in Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a copper-gold deposit being developed underneath the current Intermediate Ore Zone (IOZ) mine. One of company's current plans is to prepare this mine for a steady oreflow of 25,000 tpd by year 2003. This study includes the estimation of airflow requirements for various mining activities, the design of major intakes and returns, the determination of airway resistances and specifications of fan duties. It also includes the results of air pressure/quantity measurements in existing airways and the standards stated by the current Indonesian mining law.

"The South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel (SHCST) project is a significant component of the Hartford Metropolitan District’s (MDC) long-term control plan (LTCP), which is overseen by the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CTDEEP). This project will address a portion of the MDC’s Clean Water Project (CWP), which will reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs), eliminate sanitary sewer overflows (SSOs), and reduce nitrogen released into the Connecticut River. The purpose of the SHCST project is to eliminate West Hartford and Newington SSOs, eliminate Franklin area CSOs discharging to Wethersfield Cove and minimize CSO discharges to the South Branch Park River. The locations of each overflow are shown in Fig. 1. In 2010, the district prepared a preliminary design report (PDR) for the SHCST project, which included relief of the Folly Brook trunk sewer and proposed to keep the tunnel boring machine (TBM) retrieval shaft within the city limits of Hartford. Figure 1 shows the 2010 PDR recommended tunnel route. Subsequent to the PDR, the objectives of the SHCST have slightly shifted. In accordance with ongoing revisions to the LTCP, relief of the Folly Brook Trunk Sewer is no longer necessary. Additionally, the MDC has decided to perform less sewer separation in the Franklin Avenue drainage area. To replace the sewer separation, new relief points are proposed within the Franklin area and will be diverted to the SHCST. Figure 1 also shows the current recommended tunnel route (Alignment F). During 2012, the MDC conducted an evaluation of the potential of connecting the proposed North Tunnel (originally proposed as an independent tunnel with its own pump station) into the South Hartford Conveyance and Storage Tunnel. This evaluation concluded that the two proposed tunnels could reasonably be connected together and operated as a single tunnel system utilizing the tunnel pump station at the eastern terminus of the South Hartford Tunnel (Fig. 2). It also was concluded that this alternative was less costly than two independent tunnel systems."

The Middle Mississippi River extends from the mouth of the Ohio River to the mouth of the Missouri River, a distance of about 310 kilometers (km) measured along the river. From its founding in 1764 to the first steamboat arrival in 1817, the City of St. Louis was little more than a trading post. However, with the advent of the shallow-draft steamboat, the Middle Mississippi River rapidly became a major thoroughfare of commerce. In this regard, its importance has been reflected by the development of port facilities at St. Louis and by Federal activity relating to channel maintenance and improvement. First Federal work on the Middle Mississippi River was autho¬rized by Congress in 1824. This work was for snag removal and bank clearing and was directed at reducing the hazards to steamboat traffic, particularly during low-flow periods. During the 1820's and early 1830's, the main channel threatened to move toward the Illinois shore and abandon the St. Louis port facilities. In 1836 and 1837, Congress authorized construction of permanent improvements to keep-the river next to St. Louis (Missouri shore). The current state of the mass transit industry in America will be examined. How and why this important urban activity shifted entirely, or almost entirely, from the private sector to the public sector. Who pays for transit? For day to day operating costs? For capital investment? The prospects for transit's future will be the next major issue addressed. In a word, they are rather good. Over the past decade there have been major new transit investments made in Atlanta, Baltimore, Washington, D.C. and Miami, as well as constant re-investment in such cities as New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. While the current administration has put a temporary halt on the initiation of any major new rail transit projects using Federal funds, there are several mechanisms localities have for using other resources for such projects. These will be explored.

This paper discusses the role of the mineral-adapted acidiphilic microorganism Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans in the beneficiation of arsenopyrite-containing multisulfides (pyrite and chalcopyrite) and the bioremediation of the resulting arsenical waste water. It was found that adaptation to minerals alters the surface properties of the microorganism. Bacterial adaptation to arsenopyrite and controlled bacterial adhesion to mineral surfaces lead to selectivity in arsenopyrite separation. Bioremoval of arsenic ions (both arsenite and arsenate ions) by Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is also discussed. Impurity minerals in fluorspar ores and concentrates from a deposit in Southern Africa have been studied by reflected light, transmitted light, and cathodoluminescence microscopy. The principal impurities are quartz, calcite, aegirine, apatite, ankerite, magnetite, goethite, and synchysite [Ca(La,Ce,Nd)(CO3)2F]. Cathodoluminescence microscopy was found to be very useful in studying the character of the fluorite and especially for recognizing the presence of apatite and calcite impurities. Fluorite exhibits blue, calcite shows yellow, and apatite has white, light purple, and pink cathodoluminescence. The cathodoluminescent character of apatite varies with its geological environment and position in the orebody. The results of this microscopic study show that phosphorus present in fluorite concentrates occurs principally in binary locked apatite-fluorite particles. Successive fluorite cleaner concentrates contain progressively smaller amounts of locked apatite-fluorite particles. Free apatite has been effectively partitioned to the final tailings.

The Eagle Mountain Mine of the Kaiser Steel Corporation is located in the California portion of the Colorado Desert at a distance of about 60 miles east of Indio, California. At the present time, this mine is producing at the rate of 5,000,000 tons of concentrate per year. A total of 1,000,000 tons of ore per year is presently being sold on the Japanese market while the remainder is consumed by the Kaiser Steel Company blast furnaces at Fontana, California. A new Pellet Plant and Concentrator is presently under, construction with completion scheduled for May or June 1965. This plant will have a rated capacity of 2,200,000 tons of pellets per year and essentially all of this production will be sold to Japanese steel companies.

The Maybell Mill of, Trace Elements Corporation, Unit of Union Carbide Corporation is located approximately five miles northeast of Maybell, Colorado, and twenty-five miles northwest of Craig. It is located in the midst of the uranium ore deposits whose presence, made it possible. In November 1953 Russel Cutter, Chief Geologist for the original Trace Elements Corporation, picked up high readings on a scintillometer while flying over this area. Later, with George Morehouse, Chief Engineer for the original. Trace Elements Corporation, he started a search for surface indications. In this search, they found an out crop which can be regarded as the discovery lode on this property. The actual locating of claims and acquiring free lands and state lands was begun in March 1954. During 1955 enough drilling was done to indicate that a sufficient tonnage of ore existed to make possible a mill. These ore deposits are located in the Browns Park formation which is an unconsolidated sandstone with a few hard lime ribs running through it. The geologists tell us that this region was once a vast basin which became filled with wind blown sand and volcanic tuff, Later on, ground waters brought uranium into the basin which precipitated out in the sand. During the late summer and fall of 1955, a small pilot plant was operated under the supervision of John L. Chapman testing these Browns Park ores. During the operation of the pilot plant, three small open pits were developed and the ore from these pits shipped to Union Carbide Nuclear Company, Division of Union Carbide Corporation, at Rifle. To date all ore is being mined from open ptis. In the fall of 1956 the original Trace Elements group signed a contract with: the AEC for a mill at Maybell and on November 5, 1956, Union Carbide acquired the Trace Elements Corporation properties and contract. During the next two months, intensive research was carried out on the Browns Park ores by our research lab at Rifle. They also checked some of the metallurgical results which had been obtained through the operation of the pilot plant by the original Trace Elements group. During this period, a report on Trace Elements Corporation ores was also prepared by the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation. This report contained data on representative samples of the ore tested for the original Trace Elements group. From this research and study a flow sheet was decided upon.

"The weathering of coal mine waste rock releases iron, calcium, sulfate and associated trace elements like selenium (Se). Nitrogen species are also found in association with coal-mining drainages mainly due to the leaching of residual blasting compounds. Elevated concentrations of Se are a ubiquitous occurrence in coal-mining environments in British Columbia. A major concern with waterborne Se in British Columbia is the potential for its bioaccumulation in aquatic food chains.Treatment to remove Se from coal-mining waste waters has proven to be challenging for conventional water-treatment technologies. Compounding this challenge, many streams are characterized by high flows and low selenium concentrations. Conventional membrane and ion exchange treatments produce concentrated brine streams that are difficult to treat or require disposal. Conventional biotreatment systems use excess nutrients to provide the required electrons to compensate for inefficient and variable electron availability, as well as to adjust reactor chemistry.This paper's electro-biochemical reactor (EBR) technology provides a controllable and consistent supply of useable electrons to the microbes directly at a low voltage potential (1-3 V) and low current. In this manner, the EBR technology overcomes the shortcomings found in conventional systems, as it reduces the required nutrient addition and provides a more controllable, efficient, economical and robust biotreatment system. Additionally, the EBR process does not produce excess solids or biomass; therefore, solids management post-treatment is not required.Laboratory EBR bench-scale and on-site pilot-scale systems were used to treat five British Columbia coal-mine waste waters; influent Se concentrations ranged from 35 µg/L to 531 µg/L. Se treatment targets for the tested waters ranged from 5 to 10 µg/L. Mean Se concentrations in EBR effluents ranged from 0.5 µg/L to 1.4 µg/L, while reducing sulfate concentrations. The test data demonstrate that the EBR technology is an effective Se removal option for British Columbia’s coal-mining waste waters.IntroductionSelenium in Mining. Selenium (Se) is a naturally occurring trace element, which is an essential nutrient in small amounts (Thompson and Robinson, 1980; Brown and Arthur, 2001). However, it is also toxic to aquatic life, birds, and humans at very low concentrations. King County?s (KC) Brightwater Conveyance Project in Seattle, Washington involves the construction of approximately 21 kilometers (13 miles) of bored tunnel, in three contracts, with four TBM?s which produce large amounts of real-time digital mining data. To facilitate the management of TBM data with a single interface and assist in project Quality Assurance, KC?s Construction Manager (Jacobs Engineering) recommended the use of the software TPC (Tunneling Process Control), developed by Babendererde Engineers GmbH. The paper demonstrates how TPC was used for oversight, analysis and QA on a complex tunneling project and how contemporaneous review and management of data results in a better understanding of TBM performance than can be obtained by retrospective analysis of data.
