The direct recovery of precious metals from a1kaline cyanide solution is frequently accomplished by the well-established Merrill-Crowe process involving zinc-dust cementation. This is particularly true for silver. Plant data from two operations are presented and analyzed in terms of intrinsic reaction features. In such Merrill-Crowe plants a plate-and-frame filter press acts as a semicontinuous fixed-bed reactor with a distribution of particle retention times. For the plants studied, 99Yo of the silver is recovered with a solution retention time of less than 2 min. Differences in plant operating conditions and product characteristics can be related to the nature of the surface deposit of silver which forms on the zinc particles. From laboratory experiments and plant samples it has been found that the presence of lead in the system activates a change in the silver deposit morphology to the dendritic state which affects the rate of silver deposition as well as the filter cake porosity. Finally the plate-and-frame press is considered from an engineering perspective as a semi- continuous fixed - bed reactor to describe the behavior of the system.

The problems of geological exploration are discussed on the basis of computerized modeling of, complex orebodies, as well as the task of data authenticity evaluation. The theoretical baseof modeling is solving the problem of determining the parametres of orebodies sizes distribution along random intersections by exploratory workings. The relationship is established between univariate distribution moments in the intersections and the moments of the orebodies sizes distribution in three dimentions. It is suggested to use the obtained results for compyter modeling of the orebodies accumulations and for imitation modeling of their exploration. The computer experiments with the models make it possible to establish the optimum parametres of exploration networls.

The C. E. Weed concentrator treats 51,000 tons per day of 0.5% to 0.7% copper ore received from the Berkeley Pit, the Continental East Pit and the Butte underground mines. Improved operating techniques and conversion from semi-autogenous secondary grinding to ball milling have increased tonnage from an original design of 42,000 tpd. Separate treatment of sands and slimes, with recovery of soluble cop- per from the slimes, has increased total copper recovery. Concentrator tailings are pumped 600 vertical feet and 20,000 horizontal feet for disposal.

INTRODUCTION The report of the workshop on Alternate Energy Strategies estimated that the world's reserve of uranium oxide is about 700,000 tonnes. In order to extract these reserves, it is estimated that between 100 and 200 million tonnes of solid waste and of the order of 1 billion cubic meters of liquid waste will be generated. In addition, radium within tailing will continue to generate radon gas as it decays for many years after closure. Hence, the handling, storage and possible use of uranium mine waste is a matter which deserves serious consideration and planning. Since the properties of the waste will largely dictate the method of handling and storage or use of the waste, the properties of the waste should be determined, to the degree possible, prior to the design and subsequent operation of the mine. Uranium mine waste has both solid and fluid constituents. The solids include soil and rock removed during site preparation, similar material removed during development of the mine and uranium tailing generated by the mill. Soils can be stockpiled for reuse during reclamation or used as earth materials for construction of fills, roads, dams and soil linings. Rock can be stockpiled, used as mine backfill or can be used for earth construction in fills, roads and dams. The tailing is usually placed in a tailing storage area. The fluid constituents are both liquid and gaseous. The liquid waste is generally composed of the mill water; however, additional waste water can be generated by dewatering processes and diversion of surface runoff. The gaseous constituent of the uranium mine waste is radon generated by the radioactive decay of radium in the ore tailing. DEFINITION OF PROPERTIES The following presents a brief definition of some of the more important properties discussed later. The definitions are not intended to be comprehensive, but are useful as a basis for understanding.

The solution mining review did not arrive in time for publication in the May issue. The term solution mining is commonly used to refer to heap leaching, dump leaching, in situ mining and bore hole slurry mining technologies. The US Bureau of Mines is continuing with research in these areas. Commercial application of these technologies is progressing. There is an ongoing cooperative research project between the Bureau of Mines and the Santa Cruz Joint Venture to evaluate in situ copper mining at a field site near Casa Grande, AZ. The project is currently in the environmental permitting stage. The Bureau is preparing an environmental assessment for the project as part of the National Environmental Policy Act. The Bureau is also continuing with laboratory experiments to study the leaching characteristics of atacamite ore from the field test site, as

The 70th Annual Meeting of the Minnesota Section of SME and the 58th Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium were held April 22-24, 1997, in Duluth, MN. About 450 attended both. The Fifth Annual Trade Expo, held during the meeting, was attended by a record 80 exhibitors. An SME short course on materials handling preceded the meeting. Iron-mining and the steel industries highlighted the meetings. Specific topics in the keynote addresses and technical sessions primarily concerned iron mining, iron- ore processing, product (taconite pellet) transportation and the steel market. Although the iron mining industry held center stage, several papers outside of iron mining were also presented. Iron mining in Minnesota contributes $1 billion to Minnesota's economy. According to the Iron Mining Association of Minnesota, more than 20,000 state jobs rely on the industry. Minnesota's iron mining industry came through tough times in the early 1980s, mostly because of worldwide competition. However, the industry has shown significant improvement in the last 15 years. A large share of the steel industry's competitiveness in the late 1990s is due to cost and quality improvements in the taconite mines. The taconite industry has become more productive, largely through the application of new technology. Since the early 1980s, Minnesota's taconite mines have nearly doubled the number of tons per worker-hour. Most of the taconite reserves in the United States are located in Minnesota's Mesabi, Vermilion and Cuyuna iron ranges. The Mesabi range alone contains an estimated 24. Rockburst is defined as a sudden and violent explosion of rock on the surface of a rock excavation. Rockburst has been regarded as the least understood and most feared hazard problem for underground rock excavations. Traditionally, rockbursts were classified into the strain, pillar, and fault-slip categories. However, rockbursts are also known to occur at stress levels well below the rock yield strength, in mines where the rock is far from brittle, or without the presence of geological discontinuities. A plausible explanation of rockbursts is buckling, which has been identified as one of the main mechanisms for rockbursts. It is observed that rockbursts are often induced by dynamic loadings (pulses) from adjacent blasting. Therefore, the present paper studies the effect of pulse shape and amplitude on pillar rockbursts induced by dynamic loadings from blasting using the method of numerical analysis. The governing equation of a pillar’s motion is set up and the mechanism of pillar rockbursts is investigated through a practical example. The results show that it is not the shape of a pulse but the impact energy to decide the occurrence of pillar rockbursts. If all other parameters remain the same, pillar rockbursts are more likely to occur when the pulse duration is longer. The parametric resonance and the perturbation of dynamic loadings are also found to play an important role in the occurrence of rockbursts. These insights would provide invaluable clues about the mechanism and for better control of pillar rockbursts.

A Simulation/Animation Model (SAM) with several unique features has been developed for continuous mining in room-and-pillar production systems. Initial cut data are generated by the program based on a short list of general section parameters, and is graphically displayed on the screen for checking and editing. This portion of the program includes several intelligent features. For example, a different cut sequence will be generated for uni-directional section ventilation than for bi-directional flow. Once the data are accepted, the entire simulation may be viewed in animation. Effectively, much of the data are checked visually by watching the actions of the mining equipment. Following the simulation, results are summarized as bar and pie charts, as well as printed output. In addition to the extensive use of graphics, the program contains several advances in simulation techniques as well.

Since the production prototype continuous vat leaching pilot plant was installed at Ariel Resources in Costa Rica in 1995, the test results and lessons learned have been invaluable in plotting the future of this method. Vigorous test programs in base and precious metals as well as design developments for studies have shown the advantages, economically, technically, and environmentally that favor this method over current practices in heap leaching and stirred tank leaching. Much larger individual vats have been developed with throughputs as high as 5000 t/d with larger vats envisaged, and there has been a trend towards using vats with ground ore. Five projects are slated to begin detailed engineering this year, three in precious metals and two in copper. Of particular interest to future producers is the ability to deposit d,y, detoxified tailings at a fraction of the cost of conventional methods. Proprieta,y work is ongoing which promises to eliminate the need for tailings dams when using other methods of processing such as flotation. This is of particular importance in light of dam failures around the world in recent years.

Once an ore body has been probed and outlined, and sufficient information has been collected to warrant further analysis, the important process of selecting the most appropriate method or methods for mining can begin. At this stage, the selection is preliminary only, serving as the basis for a project layout and feasibility study. Later, it may be found necessary to revise the details, but the basic principles for the ore extraction should remain a part of the final layout. With respect to the basic principles employed, relatively few mining methods are used today. For the purposes of this presentation, the principles are classified as follows: 1) For naturally supported stopes, the available methods are room-and-pillar mining and sublevel stoping. 2) For artificially supported stopes, the available methods are shrinkage stoping, cut-and-fill mining, square-set mining, and longwall mining. 3) For caving methods, the available techniques are sublevel caving and block caving. Due to the uniqueness of each ore deposit, the variations on each of these methods are nearly limitless. It is impossible to include even the major variations in this chapter; the goal of this chapter is to present the principles as a guide to the mining engineer in adapting the general methods to specific needs. The selection process described herein is intended to supply the techniques by which the candidate methods available for a given ore body can be reduced to one or two feasible approaches. The feasible approaches then can be evaluated in detail, and the particular modifications can be investigated. In describing costs and economic factors, all values herein are expressed in terms of 1978 US dollars.

Soil amendments or soil conditioners generally carry the con- notation of being useful for problem soils or soils needing special treatments to produce maximum yields. Many different materials have been utilized, both inorganic and organic. Only the most commonly used and those that appear to have potential to become commonly used will be discussed. Soil productivity depends on many factors. Soil amendments mainly modify physical characteristics and microbial action, and/or change the pH of a soil, rather than directly supplying plant nutrients. They give soil the needed physical properties to allow plant growth, fight erosion, or save water. Some soil amendments provide nutrients in addition to altering the physical, biological, or chemical characteristics of soil. The term "soil amendment," as it is used by Soil Science Society of America, allows soil amendments to be materials other than those used primarily as fertilizers (Anon.,1987). Soil amendments as fertilizers of any type will not be considered here because this aspect is more relevant to the previous chapter entitled "Agricultural Materials: Fertilizers" in this volume. Several inorganic soil amendments have been used since the early 20th century to alter the character of soil: limestone, lime, and similar calcium-rich carbonates and oxides for acid soils, and calcium sulfate (gypsum) and native or uncombined sulfur for alkaline soils. The use of these amendments (limestone, lime, gypsum, and sulfur) or their equivalents has been studied and documented in many basic soils tests (McCaslin and Boyle, 1980). Perlite and vermiculite are considered in separate chapters and only a brief statement of their use as soil conditioners will be made in this chapter. Peat is the principal natural organic soil amendment, but manure, both as a fertilizer and soil conditioner, is used in every part of the world. In less-developed countries, manure is the primary soil fertilizerlconditioner. An organic-rich material designated as "humate" has been marketed as a soil amendment for many years and will be addressed in this paper. Other materials are discussed by the Soil Science Society of America in its Special Publication 7, "Soil Conditioners" (Stewart, 1975). They include bitumen emulsion, polyacrylamide, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, bentonite, nonionic surfactants, and natural mulches. Zeolites can be added to the list of miscellaneous soil amendments (McCaslin and Boyle, 1980), as can calcium chloride (Pressler and Pelham, 1985), sulfuric acid, ferric and ferrous sulfate, aluminum sulfate, ammonium polysulfide, calcium polysulfide, and ammonium bisulfite (Stromberg and Tisdale, 1979). Sludge will not be considered as a soil amendment because it has properties more consistent with fertilizers. All these "other materials" account for a very small amount of the volume and value of soil amendments used and will be only briefly discussed.

Rehabilitation work at the Cameron Run Tunnels entailed the restoration of seven heavily deformed, approximately 69 m long, steel liner plate supported culverts through a CSX Railroad embankment near Alexandria, Virginia. A custom fabricated expander, equipped with four 200-ton hydraulic jacks on two expansion arms was used to push back the liner plates encroaching into the proposed tunnel profile and install the steel set support. In a second phase the tunnels were then lined with 16 cm of fiber reinforced shotcrete. Geotechnical instruments both in the tunnels and on the railroad embankment were used to monitor the effects of the rehabilitation work on the two CSX Railroad tracks above the tunnels. Freight and passenger trains were required to run uninterrupted and at maximum speeds throughout construction.

Old tailings from Zn, Au, Cu, and Ni mining operations were characterized. Their mineralogical variation in depth is compared with matching pore water and solids chemistry. A geochemical model was used to predict minerals precipitating from pore water solutions. These are compared with actual secondary minerals occurring. The degree to which the precipitation of secondary minerals controls the sulfate and iron concentration of the pore water was also investigated. The results obtained are related to the selection of the most appropriate modes of tailings deposition.

At the beginning of the previous chapter, variation in the types of room-and-pillar stopes were briefly identified so that the reader could begin to understand the extensive application of this mining system. These same variations will be reviewed and elaborated upon in this chapter while discussing the methods by which the material is extracted. FULL-FACE SLICING BY DRILLING AND BLASTING When the entire mineralized thickness is taken in one pass of mining, it is known as full-face slicing. There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the back. Theoretically, there is no limit as to how high the face could be in a single pass. But there are practical limitations to equipment size, pillar stability, and control of local loose slabs on the face, roof, and pillars that dictate current practices. The range of face height of the 15 typical room- and-pillar mines covered in Table 8 (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) from the Dravo report, 1974 was 1.7 m (5.5 ft) to 9.8 m (32.1 ft), the average being 5.2 m (17.1 ft). In the Gaspe copper mine, Murduchville, Que., the drill jumbos were constructed with an extendable tower for full-face mining up to 15.2 m (49.9 ft) if necessary. However, a more common practice at that mine is to take the ore in multiple slices (Hall, 1959). In many metal mines the normal practice when starting stoping is to drive a single development drift into the ore zone a distance that will allow at least four or five rooms to be opened on each side of the initial drift. Since this opening will probably serve as the main haulage drift, it should be kept as straight and as level as possible. As to the other criteria for the stope developments, it might be well at this point for the mine planner to review the remarks presented earlier (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) on drifts, entries, and crosscuts for production. After the initial drift is driven, it should be slabbed to the full room width if it is not that wide already. Next, the future pillars should be marked on the ribs and the rooms driven between them. If the ore extends beyond the length of the initial drift and is to be mined in the normal sequence of mining, care should be taken in a random room-and-pillar system to see that the extension of the initial roadway remains straight. If pillar "spotting" is left to the shift foreman or to the miners, they probably will not realize the importance of maintaining a uniform pillar line next to the roadway, and of keeping the line straight. Invariably, a pillar will end up in the middle of the future drift extension resulting in a "dogleg" in a possible main haul- age road. While this error is not catastrophic, too much weaving in and out of pillars will certainly slow down future production haulage and needlessly increase costs. Face or Breast Drilling and Blasting Practices To drill and blast the initial advances into the rock, usually some form of cut pattern must be used. In room-and-pillar mining, when a pattern is drilled in a face and that face is the only exposed surface to which all of the rock must be broken, the pattern is known as a "face round" or "swing." The face to which the rock must be broken is referred to as a "free face." Thus the most common way to advance a room into virgin rock with only one free face is by drilling swings. If, after breaking around a pillar, taking down back, or taking up bottom, there is a second (or third) face exposed, a group of holes drilled nearly parallel to a free face and breaking to it is known as a "slab round" or "slabbing." In some mining districts it is also known as "slashing." Obviously, because two faces exposed offer less resistance to fragmentation than a single face, slabbing requires less drilling and fewer explosives than required to break the same tonnage with the same degree of fragmentation with swings. The role of copper sulphate in the flotation of pyrite has been studied. A survey of a number of pyrite flotation plants using copper sulphate showed that in correct dosages, it was able to increase both grades and recoveries. This was confirmed in batch tests. Copper sulphate had no significant effect on the rate of adsorption of PNBX onto pyrite. Copper adsorbed irreversibly onto the pyrite when the latter was slurried in a copper sulphate solution. Copper sulphate had a significant effect on the maximum froth height obtained in static three-phase froth tests. Proposals to explain these observations are made.

Historically, much of Western Australia's gold production has come from the refractory sulphide-telluride ores located in Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile. Most of the recent gold boom has been associated with low grade, open pit free-milling oxide deposits. Primary sulphides are commonly encountered at depth and in many cases are highly refractory. Different approaches to the problem of recovering go1d from these ores have been adopted subject to local conditions both technical and environmental. The least preferred option is the preparation of a gold- rich flotation concentrate which is shipped to a smelter. Roasting of flotation concentrates can be practised in certain remote locations where sulphur emissions are tolerated. Fine grinding of flotation concentrates followed by direct cyanidation is another popular approach although this often leads to fouling of carbon by flotation reagents in the adsorption section and high soluble gold losses.

INTRODUCTION Since several years the author is engaged in research activities in the field of mining method modelling (Oberndorfer, 1993 and 1994). The initial goal was to improve and assist the selection of the most appropriate mining method. However during investigations it became obvious that the most beneficial application of computer support is the fast calculation of numerical assessment rather than the consideration of all, i.e. also qualitative, criterions necessary for final decision. Numerical results serve - together with qualitative considerations based on the experience of the mining engineer - as a basis for decision. The emphasis is on "fast" calculation, as only this property makes it possible to calculate and compare many distinct variations. As long as no procedure exists, which optimizes all involved parameters, calculating many variations is of great important, because it is the only way to increase the chance to pick a alternative "close to optimum", but also to learn about the sensitivity the result will react on changes of input parameters, which are rarely known exactly. Generally speaking many trials give a better basis for final decision. It is no secrete that the most important obstacle towards quick calculations of a series of alternatives is not the processing time of the computer, but the time required for setting the input data in way that the computer can start processing, which is usually inter- active man work on the screen. Furthermore usually several distinct programs are required to cover the whole range of involved problems, with corresponding problems in automatic data transfer. The research work's goal was to overcome these problems. The approach developed was to describe a mining method more in a theoretical way (i.e. to give the computer some degree of "consciousness" on mining methods), which then can be applied under any specific conditions. E.g. a cut-and-fill operation will be "generally" the same in narrow or thick deposit areas, but the resulting keyfigures, e.g. total tonnage, productivity, dilution and loss, or finally costs per ton, will differ significantly. The approach (MMM = mining method modelling) presented reflects a deduction from the general case to a specific one (rather than the other way round). The developed model is general enough to be applicable to any mining method, and also to any degree of precision the mining method should be described, contrary to programs designed for specific mining method layouts which can be adjusted in a more or less wide range. PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT The principle correctness and feasibility of the approach was proved by a prototype program. However this program was more on a research level and far away from application for "real world" problems. The reason for this was, that it was regarded wasted time to re-invent certain tools, e.g. geometry intersection, deposit modelling or visualization. Hence it was tried to attract several software producers to invest in finalizing the model. Unfortunately this endeavor was not successful. Despite this defeat - and after some months of resignation - a final start on the project was decided. he reason for this decision was not at last the research activity in respect of low-cost underground mining methods for bulk- material as a substitute of typical quarry operations due to environmental restriction. This research work - which is in particular important for Austrian mining activities in beautiful and touristically used landscape - requires a lot of calculations in the way described. Both are still in state of progress, but - regarding mining method modelling - preliminary results can be presented. A complete re-programming of the program was required. Most obvious are the changes of programming language and operating system environment. Instead of Pascal under DOS C++ under MS-WindowsNT is now used. Several problems could be solved by this, in particular memory management, device drivers for input/output, and user friendlyness by up-to-date windows technology. However also more basic structures were changed. The idea was to utilize as many existing commercially available programs as possible to minimize programming efforts. WindowsNT helps already a lot by MFC technology, but also due to its multi-task facilities. This feature allows to run simultaneously several pro-

Discussion by R.J. Pindred In his paper, Davis presents an overview of risk. He also introduces the Capital Asset Processing Model (CAPM) as a foundation for selecting the appropriate discount rate for a mining project. While applying portfolio theory is more defensible than the ad hoc adjustment of discount rates, the CAPM is not a panacea. CAPM shortcomings [The CAPM, as Davis stated, is expressed in the equation: ri=rf+pi4) where ri is the project discount rate rf is the risk free interest rate (3i is the project beta, and 0 is the market risk premium (rm - rf)] Application of the CAPM is more difficult than Davis indicates. Valuation is prospective, while the CAPM parameters are historical. Beta is determined from a regression analysis of historical data, while the beta needed for valuation is the expected beta. Betas are known to be unstable and the regressions that generate them often have low explanatory power. The difficulty of estimating a "project" beta must also be considered. Thus, the beta that is used in the CAPM will be based on the analyst's judgment. Like Cavender's discount rate, this judgment can lead to different project NPVs. Subjectivity in valuation cannot be avoided by a mechanical application of the CAPM. The risk-free rate, which Davis identifies as a short-term real rate of 4%, is also subject to scrutiny. A mining project is not a short-term investment and no single risk-free rate is appropriate for all of the cash flows. The hypothetical mine discussed in Cavender's paper is a six-year project. One might argue for the application of a risk-free rate from the Treasury yield curve at the duration of the project (in a bond-duration sense). This, too, is inappropriate. The risk-free rate should be matched to the timing of the cash flow. These rates can be determined by calculating the implied forward rates from the yield curve using a procedure known as "bootstrapping." It is likely that each of the project's cash flows would be discounted at a different rate. Commodity prices Davis criticizes the "ad hoc adjustment to the discount rate." Yet, in his discussion of the value of stochastic simulation, he suggests that the gold price be modeled as a "random walk, with or without a trend." This is essentially an arbitrary modeling of price risk. Consider that a liquid market in gold futures exists. The futures' price curve, which is closely related to the market's estimate of future spot gold prices, should be used to provide inputs to the model. This is especially true of a relatively short six-year project. Alternatively, as Davis correctly points out, a risk-averse investor can sell the commodity short to hedge price risk. Is it any more correct, in the portfolio sense, to account for price risk at all ?? Davis Pindred discusses two issues related to my paper, the shortcomings of the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM) and which commodity price values to use in the valuation exercise. Even though these topics are not directly related to the use or misuse of Monte Carlo simulation, they are important points to take into consideration in valuation exercises. Since I do not appear to have addressed these issues satisfactorily in my original paper, I will comment on each here. Pindred agrees with me that applying portfolio theory, and specifically the CAPM, to the selection of project discount rates is more defensible than ad hoc methods. But he then points out that the application of the CAPM to project valuation is more difficult that I indicate. It is true that the CAPM is a difficult tool for project valuation in general,. But the application of the CAPM to mining projects is one of the easiest I can think of. The biggest problem with using the CAPM for project valuation is coming up with an expected project beta. I suggest a project beta for gold projects of 0.45. The "true" value might be 0.35, 0.55 or whatever. Pindred correctly notes that the selection of the appropriate project beta is based

Spherical or oil agglomeration has been recognised for many years as a possible process for the recovery of mineraVmetal values. BP has investigated the potential of spherical agglomeration for a number of minerals as have other workers. Testwork has also been carried out by both BP and others on the selective agglomeration of fine coal. The spherical agglomeration of both minerals and coal depends on the use of an immiscible liquid e.g. a hydrocarbon which is added to a suspension of the solids in water. On agitation the oil is distributed over oleophilic/hydrophobic surfaces and particle impact allows inter-particle liquid bridges to form causing agglomeration. It is also possible to enhance the oleophilicity of the material to be recovered by the use of collectors similar to those used in froth flotation.

During the last decade grassroots minerals education programs have blossomed throughout the United States and in other countries. At the same time an environmental education movement has been gaining momentum. While this offers a unique opportunity to share the mining industry’s story, it also has some potential pitfalls. In this paper the authors will discuss some of the benefits of participating in environmental education and provide some practical tips for success, based on New Mexico experiences. It will conclude with a presentation on a successful environmental education program at Heights Middle School in Farmington New Mexico.
